page 3 event within 100 mile of yours try to move the date. Double booking in the same neck of the woods divides the profits for the charity/ cause and hurts both events. If it is unavoidable at least have enough respect to contact the other MC and talk about it. Maybe you can work together, or the other MC may be willing to move their date. Bottom line is don’t be an ass wagon and book on top of other events. It hurts your and the other MC’s cause.
RESPECT Even though most of us ride all year, May kicks off “riding season” and with the many rallies, runs and day rides over the next several months I thought it’s maybe not a bad idea to refresh our memory about how Bikers roll, in a word – Respect. As old school bikers will tell you, you can act like a fool and do things you shouldn’t but never disrespect a brother in the process. Here are a few of the more common ways bikers show respect for fellow bikers. Never park too close to another bike making it hard for him to mount up. • Never touch another bike without permission. • Don’t ask to ride someone’s scooter. • Don’t pull next to a bike stopped at the intersection, no closer than your front tire in line with his rear tire. • Never ride into the middle of a pack you are not with – and even if it is your group keep your position. • Always pull over to help a fellow biker on the side of the road to of-
fer help even if he or she doesn’t look like they are in distress. • Wave at the oncoming bikers (even non-Harleys). (Large rallies are exceptions as you would never have the ability to pull your clutch). • Take your time, it does not matter if you had the right of way if you are dead. Your misjudgment(s) can cause others in your group to be injured. This is obviously not an exhaustive list but should be common knowledge. If not, you’re welcome. Here now are a few Respect rules geared more toward MCs that may not be often considered: »» We all know there are only so many weekends in the summer months and more causes than there are weekends and worse, only so many bikers to go around. So please, For MC’s (or businesses) doing runs, take a moment to check the local biker calendars. Try not to book an event on top of another club’s event. Use the 100 mile rule, if you find an MC
»» When in the same venue where multiple patches are present be courteous and respectful. Typically, the respective Presidents or other officers will make contact with each other on the spot and let each other know they are cool. Club members should also do the same with other club members. Extend a hand and show respect for their club or at least as fellow bikers. »» Be respectful around the ladies. Be gentlemen. Never approach another man’s wife or girl without his consent or at least knowledge that you are doing so. This is a good rule to follow even outside the biker community but if you want to disrespect a biker and end up with serious problems in a hurry mess with his woman. »» Don’t talk shit. If you don’t have good things to say keep it to yourself. We all have disagreements with people but gossiping (even about real issues) is a great way to find yourself on the receiving
end of trouble. Talking crap about others ALWAYS comes back to haunt you. Got a problem go to the guy with whom you have the beef. No one wants to hear you trash a brother. This is especially true in the inner-club setting. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen MCs get destroyed from with in for this sort of behavior. »» When wearing your colors you are representing your club, if you want respect you have to dish it out. Your actions reflect on the entire club when you are wearing your cut. If you screw up, fix it. Don’t let the entire club suffer because you are a dufus. »» Lastly, no one expects you to attend every MC event nor to support MCs you don’t identify with as a club. Having said that, it would go a long way in creating good will to show your support for another club’s events by attending or at least posting their events on your calendars. There are other things we could discuss but this is what was on my mind as I spend this particular day cooped up in the house instead of out riding due to the crazy May rains. After the Accident….
BIKER FRIENDLY DIRECTORY FOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
Kelli Langley WRITER
We all hope it never happens, but we all know that, sooner or later, someone is going to cut you off, run a stop sign in front of you, or run you off the road, usually with the excuse, “I didn’t see you….” Most of these encounters are near-misses that leave us shaken but basically okay physically, luckily. But it seems like lately accidents involving motorists and motorcycles are becoming more and more common, and it’s usually the biker who gets blamed. So what do you do if you’re in an accident? • First of all, make sure you’re all right…even a little spill can lead to big injuries. Take a minute to breathe and see if anything hurts or if you need medical attention. Remember, you’re probably going to be a lot sorer the next day, so make sure you note any and all injuries, no matter how minor, so you can pass this information along to the doctor when you go. • Secondly, start gathering information from the other driver and any witnesses. Get the driver’s license number, insurance information, and photos of both the vehicle that hit you or caused the accident as well as your bike. Especially important is to get the names and phone numbers of any witnesses who actually saw the accident. Their statements could make the difference between you being blamed and unable to obtain a settlement and you getting the other person to pay for your inju-

Make sure you ask for a police report and not an incident report, as there is much more information in an actual police report than can help you. The police should detail damages to either vehicle, any injuries from any of the involved parties, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of all those involved as well as witnesses. • Take photos! Of everything: your bike, the other vehicle, road conditions, anything that can be vital to explaining how the accident happened. Make notes on your immediate impression of how fast the other driver was going, the weather, the time of day, etc….This information can be invaluable if you have to get a lawyer. • Don’t give a statement to anyone or admit any guilt. Be polite and cordial, but don’t give any details of the accident to the other party, don’t discuss the accident with anyone except the police, and even then, just give them

the basic details. • The next day, if you have any residual pain or are still sore, go see your doctor just in case your injuries are a little more serious than you think. Often some chiropractic work is needed to get you back where you belong. Write down any symptoms of pain, no matter how small, so you can refer back to it later. Make sure you tell your doctor everything, and document his/her response. Ask if you need to be referred to a chiropractor or physical therapist. And finally….

• Get a lawyer. Many attorneys work accident cases on a contingency fee, which means if you don’t collect you owe him/her nothing. Many also do free consultations. You are almost 99% guaranteed to get more money from a case handled by an attorney than you world if you tried to deal with the insurance company on your own.

LIFE’S A BEACH Kelli Langley WRITER Not all “biking” is done on the pavement; when you want to get out kick up some sand, there’s only one place to consider in Central California: Oceano Dunes at Pismo Beach. Two wheels, four wheels, bike, quad, ATV, or truck, the Dunes offer something for everyone who likes to get out and get sandy. There are plenty of places to put your RV or pitch a tent, and the camping fees are not that bad ($10.00 per night in addition to the $5.00 fee to get on the beach). Surfing, swimming, surf fishing, horseback riding and bird watching are some other activities people enjoy when they’re not getting stuck out in the Dunes. In the summer you can escape the heat by heading for the beach: temperatures range in the 60’s and 70’s for the highs, and the lows are in the 50’s. Most mornings find the beach and dunes shrouded in fog, which
makes things even more fun! In the winter the highs are in the 50’s and 60’s and the lows are in the 40’s, and there is actually less fog than the valley usually has. The only really “bad” weather you face there is in the spring, when the winds kick up. Tie your equipment down and make sure your tent is staked, they have a tendency to blow away! Oceano Dunes is the only California State Park where vehicles can be driven on the beach. Although you can take your Camry or Accord down the beach (at times) four wheel drive is definitely recommended for driving on the beach and to the camping and off-highway vehicle use areas in the park, especially when Arroyo Creek is running high. This beachfront paradise is one of the most popular and unique of California State Parks. There are over five miles of beach open for cars and trucks and the sand dunes available for off highway motor vehicle recreation. The recreation area is located in Oceano, three miles south of Pismo Beach off Highway 1. One mile south of the Pier Avenue beach ramp is Post 2, a post on the beach which marks the beginning of the off-highway vehicle riding and camping area. All ATV’s must be transported to this point before unloading. Any
areas on the beach or in the dunes that are fenced or signed are closed to vehicular use because they either contain sensitive plant and animal life or are private property and the fine is hefty is you get caught there.
pressure or try to dig the vehicle out, but your best bet is to hope some Good Samaritan comes along with a tow rope. Towing is available, but it’s expensive, so it’s best to have some friends along to help just in case.
Before you get to the beach, make sure your ATV or off-road vehicle is properly registered. All vehicles must be registered through the Department of Motor Vehicles and display a current green or red sticker. The rangers do check, and penalties run from fines to impounding the vehicle.
Oceano Dunes is pretty much a wide-open playground for big kids, but there are rules that must be followed. Please make sure to get a copy of these when you check in, as the rangers and SLO County are usually out and about on a regular basis. A couple of the biggies are no-brainers: don’t drink and drive or ride any off-road vehicle, and always wear a helmet on a bike, quad, or OHV. Play nice with others and you’ll usually have no problems.
Once you get to the rec area you’ll find hard packed sand, huge dunes, small jumps, large jumps and the infamous “Sand Highway”. Once you get set up, let the fun begin! Of course, no trip is considered right until you either get stuck or help someone become un-stuck. Especially back on the Sand Highway, it’s easy for an inexperienced driver to get a little overconfident and find themselves in need of help. Remember, if your vehicle becomes stuck, you might try to drop your tire

Once the sun goes down, you can head into Pismo Beach and pick up some clam chowder and fish and chips at the many establishments there, and, of course, stop by Harry’s for a couple of cold ones. All in all, if you like to get off-road and have fun, Oceano Dunes is the place to go!
