Supporting Our Officers in the Line of Duty
ach morning they start their day by pinning their badge to their chest. They protect us, our families and our community. Because of this dedication, local businesses have organized the Line of Duty Law Enforcement Run, happening on Saturday, August 31st, in order to honor the work and the families of Officers Scanlan and Davila. This is your chance to join us in giving back to the people who have been watching over our community, all in the line of duty.
In 2016, Fresno Sheriff Correctional Officers Toamalama Scanlan and Juanita Davila got shot inside the Fresno County Jail. Shooter Thong Vang was arrested and sentenced to life in prison with attempted murder charges. Prior to this incident, Vang had served 16 years in prison, after raping three children ages 12 to 14, and had been released in 2014. According to witnesses, Vang showed up asking to see someone in jail, but was very agitated and would not stop yelling at the officers. Davila, who confronted him unarmed, was shot in the jaw, while Scanlan, who went to her aid, got shot in his arm and head. The shooting happened in the lobby of Fresno County Jail, where many people and children were waiting to visit inmates and where the correctional officers do not carry a firearm. Thankfully, both officers are alive and no one else got hurt; however, both officers are still dealing with the repercussions of that traumatic experience. Davila and Scanlan both were in critical but stable condition as they were rushed into surgery. Because of this tragic event, Clawson Motorsports, Fresno County Public Safety Association, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, The Blaze, Clawson Cares, Clovis Kiwanis Club, Sierra Shadow Casters, and Jackson’s Roadhouse decided to find a way to honor the courage of Officers Scanlan and Davila, and help their family in this time of need. On August 31st, 2019, the Line of Duty Law Enforcement Run will be held benefiting the officers, where all the proceeds will be
donated to their families. Officer Scanlan’s son, Robert, who referred to his father as his “best friend” said “The day Thong Vang shot my father, it changed the world for my family,” referring to the fact that his father needed so many surgeries and is still doing rehab. Both officers are still trying to recover both physically and mentally from the incident. Davila had some words to share, “I am doing well, Praise God. I continue to stay positive and am taking things one day at a time. I am continuing my treatment and it’s going very well. I am blessed to know that my community still continues to pray for Scanlan and me. I am so thankful to be here with my family and enjoy each and every day. I am truly thankful for all of my friends, especially all of my co-workers at the Fresno County Sheriff’s Jail Division.”
Both officers were part of the Fresno Sheriff Correctional Office for more than 20 years. Eulalio Gomez who is Fresno County Public Safety Association’s President and Founder says on behalf of his association “We never forget. We will never forget our brothers and sisters when they are injured or ill. We never forget to help each when life brings them trials and tribulations. We never forget to always stand with our brothers and sisters when we are at work performing our duties. We never forget to help our community because we serve them and appreciate their support.’’ Davila decided to retire from the force, while Scanlan is still receiving rehab treatment in Los Angeles and is hoping to get back to work. Previously, Fresno and Bay Area doctors had believed that Scanlan would never recover from the shooting, but his family knew he was stronger than that. Officer Scanlan’s daughter Paulene, shared “Every time we discussed his next steps in recovery it was always ‘long term care’, it was all we kept hearing. But my mom said ‘no, my husband deserves the best and that is exactly what he is going to get”. Scanlan surprised the doctors with his resilience and how badly he wanted to get better. Now, a couple years later, both of-
ficers continue to receive therapy for their injuries. Scanlan is in Los Angeles receiving stem cell therapy and fighting to come back from his traumatic head injury. His wife Tepa spends many days with him. His beautiful children continue to excel in school and athletics. Davila has two children and two grandchildren, and Scanlan has five children, three of his kids are in college and one of them is graduating from high school this year. Their families are fighting the fear that the incident caused, dealing with mixed emotions in going through physical rehab and trying to keep their finances straight. With all that in mind, the local business that came up with the motorcycle run decided not to benefit from it, but instead encouraged that all the proceeds of the Line of Duty Law Enforcement Motorcycle Run will be given to the officer’s families. Davila is at home spending time with her beautiful family and continues to recover from her physical and mental wounds. She attributes her healing to her strong Christian views. She is loved by many for her kind and considerate personality. Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims shared during a press conference, “We will deal with this. We have the resources available for everyone including our chaplaincy program, peer counselors, and the support we all show each other. It is a very emotional issue, because this is a family. We leave our first families and join another family when we work. So we care deeply about each other. We understand what we do has risks, I am very proud of the way our personnel responded: running towards danger even when they knew shots were fired. I am very proud they were able to take him into custody”. The motorcycle run will start at Clawson Motorsports, 6334
North Blackstone Avenue, Fresno 93710. The check-in starts at 8 a.m. and a pancake breakfast will be provided by the Clovis Kiwanis Club (for all registered riders) so make sure to come early to chat with the people that are making this all possible. Following breakfast, kickstands are up at 10:50 a.m and the destination is Jackson’s Roadhouse, 20023 North Auberry, Clovis 93619, where lunch will be provided, and live bands will entertain you all afternoon. The entry fee is $35 per rider and additional $15 per passenger. Again, all the proceeds will benefit the Davila and Scanlan families, which will help them immensely. We spoke with Clawson Motorsports sales manager, Chris Horsford, about Clawson’s participation on the Law Enforcement Run and he is happy to be able to help Scanlan and Davila’s families. “The Clawson family is proud to be a part of the first annual Line of Duty Law Enforcement Run. We are honored to live in a community where we have so much support of our men and women who put their lives on the line each day, and who allow us all to work and sleep peacefully because they are here to protect us. Be a part of the Line of Duty Law Enforcement Run, and join us in supporting the families of officers Scanlan and Davila.” If you would like to support this motorcycle run, you can visit the Clawson Motorsports website at www.clawsonmotorsports. com or the Facebook page for more information and early check in. Even though it is a motorcycle run, any type of vehicle is welcome. The main goal here is to help the families of the people who have helped keep our community safe and, of course, to have fun! So come ride with some awesome people that are trying to spread love around our community, on August 31st!

Race 8 Lemoore Raceway Bree Keyes WRITER
July 6, 2019 was a day for the sprint cars at the Lemoore Speed Way put on by T-Zone Promotions. It was warm in Lemoore, Ca near highway 41, but the racers were pumped up and getting ready for their heat to begin. Checking the gas and tires, some pit crews worked around the little car getting it ready to race. Other pit crews were carefully cleaning the dirt off the cars after the race was done. This was race #8 and fighting for a position on the track was a must. Cars arrived around 4:45 pm and the race started at
6pm. Since this was my first time at a Sprint Car race, I was mesmerized by all the tiny cars and their racers as I walked around the pit area with Matt Keyes as
my photographer. The cars were colorful and all of them were unique in their own way. They all had a sponsor sticker applied to the cars to let people know who was helping them and supported them. Racers came from all over the valley to compete. One really cool set up was a beautiful long white trailer that housed the race car and everything they needed to repair and care for the car. While the diesel pusher was called home away from Bakersfield every weekend for the 64 races a year they attended. Another racer was from Kettleman City and was Sponsored by Okies Towing. Boys and girls alike from all ages were geared up and pumped up for their turn on the track. The stands were packed with friends,
family and spectators cheering them on as they rounded the track. A snack bar stands on the other side of the track from where we were for the hungry and the local SPCA was there with cute dogs to pet. Please help and donate to your local SPCA or animal shelter. The younger racers went around the track 18 times as the adults went 30 laps! They all had their own heats to compete in due to their size motor or restrictions. We then walked over to the track to take a look at the racers fighting for victory. As I was pressed up against the fence in awe of the boys and girls racing, I asked a dad standing next to me how old they were. He pointed out his son in a black and orange car and told me he was 8 years old, the number 13 black car was 5 and his other son that was racing was 11. I was shocked at the ages as they zipped around the track. A little girl around 7 years old in car #35 crashed twice and was ok, not sure I was being a parent watching, but she was such a champ! I wanted to see more as I was intrigued. We walked over to a trailer with a #16 black and orange race car. As I talked to the father Jeff Lusk from Visalia, I was surprised with the history this father and son had. Hayden Lusk, 23 years old, was racing motor cross since he was 6 years old. The father and son duo won 6 times together over the years and was the only pair in history. Now Hayden does Sprint cars, and this is his first year. His car has a 600 CC Yamaha engine and he competed in Heat 2 with restricted. Going fast was nothing new to Hayden, but transferred from 2 wheels to 4. I interviewed Hayden and asked him since this was his first year
CC Biker & motorsports how many races has, he done so far, how he felt about them and if he saw himself doing this long term. He replied “I have only raced 3 times, every time I’ve been in the car, I have been faster and more comfortable. I feel pretty good about the forward steps I’ve taken, and I look forward to what’s in store for me in the race car. As far as doing this long term, I really don’t know. It would be awesome to win and get enough support to continue doing this, but unfortunately the money isn’t there. It’s everything my dad and I have right now to just get the car to the races. So, without support I don’t know that I’ll be able to do this more than a couple of seasons.” On his off time, he is a mechanic for Enzo Temmerman. They race for factory KTM (Orange Brigade).
Hayden is young individual that loves racing and could use your help. If you would like to sponsor this eager racer or donate please get in contact with me so we can get you to the family. Don’t let his dreams die and let him continue
to race. If you want to see him race or the race in general get the schedule at T-Zone Promotions at the Lemoore Speed Way on Face Book. Race #9 starts at 6pm August 10th in Lemoore, CA. Hope to see you there!!!

Hanford Bike Night Bike Night has come to Hanford! It was a hot windy day the 19th of June in Hanford, Ca were bikes started to gather at the Buffalo Wild Wings. The band in the parking lot along with KFUN 92.5 and Kool 104.5 radio stations ran by Rick Singleton. He has merchandise for sale and could win a ticket for free buffalo wings. So, come out and spin that wheel. Brian from Kings County V Twin was there relaxing after work. If you need a bike mechanic, he is certainly the one to go to! I was passing out flyers for our Greet and Meet at Jacksons Roadhouse July 27. You can look at the CC Biker Facebook page for more info. The few people that arrived first mingled in Buffalo Wild Wings to grab a drink to cool off and by around 6:30pm the parking lot was full of bikes and
the band was hopping. Independents and Clubs conversed over each other’s bikes. Thanks to the Grave Diggers MC for coming out and showing support for the bike night. I foresee the bike nights here becoming bigger and more popular for the people that come from Visalia and Tulare areas. They will be in Hanford the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month so grab your bike, tell your friends and head out to the Buffalo Wild Wings in Hanford.

CC Biker and Motorsports Newspaper 42nd Edition Well it has not been an easy road, but we made it. Welcome to the 42nd issue of CC Biker and Motorsports Newspaper. Three years and counting thanks to all of you, it could not have been done without your support and advice. I am just amazed by all the new family and friends we have made in three short years.
I thought if this is the “rough group” then I was completely wrong about Bikers. I made it my mission to let people know how friendly, and family oriented most of these folks are.
THANK YOU! We have had so much fun attending various Biker Runs, Sprint Car Racing, Stock Car Racing, Dirt Track Racing, Sand Drags, Concerts, and lots of fundraisers. It’s cool to see folks from different types of motorsports come together to support one another and the local community as well. That’s the way it is supposed to
be, support your neighbors and have some good family fun while doing what you enjoy.

I was sent to scout biker locations and learn what they were about. I was warned to “be careful” at a few places I visited, but when I got there, I was amazed by how friendly folks were. They offered me food, drinks and lots of conversation. Since I am not a biker, I wasn’t expecting such a warm welcome.
Right before I launched CC Biker and Motorsports, I went on my very first Motorcycle event (February 6th, 2016). The Sierra Shadow Casters MC, invited me to ride along with them on their monthly Breakfast Ride. I drove my car since I don’t own a bike. Since that day we have become like family. I feel so blessed that they invited me, knowing I am not a Biker, but rather an Advocate for Bikers. That day set the tone for what was about to come. I soon learned biggest part of all bikers’ credo is Respect for one another, something I understood since that was how I was raised. Give Respect until they show they do not deserve it and then just cut them out of your life and be happy. Most Motorcycle Poker Runs are typically organized to raise monCC Biker Continued on page 7
