MEMORIAL DAY 2020: REMEMBERING THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM Kelli Morgan-Langley WRITER “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” This quote, in two sentences, sums up what Memorial Day is really all about. For most people, Memorial Day is simply a paid day off: a day to go to the park, or the beach, or the mountains; to bar-b-que and drink a few cold ones with their buddies; to kick back and enjoy a three-day weekend. Most people never give a thought to what this “holiday” is really about. They don’t think about the men and women who have shed blood, and given their lives, so that we have the freedom to do the things we do; to go the places we go; to live the lives we live. In other words, the freedoms we take for granted each and every day, until they are restricted. This Memorial Day is shaping up to be quite different. In the face of a virus that no one seems to quite understand, under a government that no one seems to quite understand, our freedoms have been restricted like few of us today have ever seen. Whether you lean right or left, there are more questions than answers coming in regarding our republic now than ever before. We are not allowed to congregate in groups of more than eight or ten, we cannot go to the movies, to the zoo, or even out to enjoy a nice dinner. Basic supplies such as toilet paper, baby wipes, meat, dried beans and rice, and bottled water are either non-existent or rationed. We are being forced to wear gloves and masks if we want to shop at some establishments. Our citizens are being urged to “snitch” on those who don’t follow these unconstitutional mandates that have been put in place. For the first time, small businesses that Americans have put blood, sweat and tears into are declared “non-essential”, leaving the proprietors and employees wondering where their next pay-check is coming from, while the politicians who have implemented these policies are still collecting their checks. Folks above the age of 65 and

Our elders, many of those from the “Greatest Generation”, are in retirement homes, unable to receive visitors. This is an unprecedented time in American history, and one our founders would more than likely be ashamed of. Places of worship are closed, and people who chose to ignore this order are being cited or arrested for merely worshipping with a congregation (even if they’re sitting in their own private vehicles). Since 1607, this country has been based on freedom of religion, and now we cannot sit in our cars and listen to a sermon on a radio station without being censured? Have we, as a nation, forgotten what we were founded on? And how can we “celebrate” Memorial Day, a day to remember those who gave their lives to protect these very freedoms which are being taken away from us today?

Beginning in 1765, American Colonists have fought for their freedoms. In that year King George III established the The Stamp Act, an Act of the Parliament of Great Britain which imposed a direct tax on the British colonies in America and required that many printed materials in the colonies be produced on stamped paper produced in London, carrying an embossed revenue stamp. Printed materials included legal documents, magazines, playing cards, newspapers, and many other types of paper used throughout the colonies, and it had to be paid in British currency, not in colonial paper money. The Colonists rebelled against this act, calling it “Taxation without representation”. Resistance to these

taxes, especially the Boston Tea Party in 1773, cause even more a rift between the American Colonies and Great Britain. The Americans began an armed rebellion in 1775, and in 1776 Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence, effectively emancipating the Colonies from British Rule. Over the next seven years a bloody war raged, killing over 25,000 Americans. These were only the first to die for the freedoms and rights which were strictly American. In 1787 the Constitution was written, and in 1791 the Bill of Rights was added, giving we Americans out “inalienable” rights, many of which we are losing now. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,-That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.” This, from the Declaration of Independence, has described the way Americans have viewed themselves and their freedom for almost 244 years, and these rights and freedoms have been paid for with the blood of men and women unafraid to sacrifice their lives for these freedoms.

Between 1783 and 1861 Americans died in several other skirmishes and wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American war, but 1861 saw the ultimate war for freedom, and we were fighting each other. The American Civil War killed over 655,000 men: the North fighting for slavery to end; the South fighting over State’s rights and freedoms as outlined in the Constitution. In the end almost four million people who had been enslaved prior to the war were freed. That freedom came from the blood of those who fought so hard to protect what they felt was the American way of life…in the end the slaves were freed, but the states were also given the power to govern themselves. So while each side lost a little, freedom was gained by many more. And those lives which were lost, on both sides of this conflict, are the price that we paid. The twentieth century brought new challenges to our great nation. As we expanded into the west, millions of people migrated here from all corners of the globe. Most of these people came to escape treason, famine, and unrelentless dictators who had taken over other countries of the world. These immigrants each brought different skill sets which led to a boom in the nation. Manufacturing, farming, industrialization, mining, financial institutions, and many other areas of business began to prosper in this young nation. In 1914, civil unrest in Eastern Europe led to the beginning of World War I. Communism was becoming wide-spread, and dictators were anxious to obtain more and more power. At the outbreak of the war, the United States avoided the conflict while trying to broker a peace. When the German U-boat U-20 sank the British liner RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915 with 128 Americans among the dead, President Woodrow Wilson insisted that America was “too proud to fight” but demanded an end to attacks on passenger ships. Who is CC Biker & Motorsports? Richard Tilley OWNER/EDITOR Well we are an information guide to Biker Friendly Businesses and Events in the Central Valley and the Central Coast of California. We are currently in Newspaper Format to keep costs to advertisers at a bare minimum. We want our Mom n Pop Businesses to be able to afford to get an advertisement for their businesses not just the big box. Locals Need to Take Care of Locals… All businesses in our paper are Biker Friendly, and that is good for groups of Bikers to know they can stop and enjoy shopping, dining out or whatever and be welcomed be the local business. Some get scared when they see a group of Bikers, because the only know the stereotype they have heard. Which I have learnt personally that is not true. Bikers are the same as me and you. They come from all walks of life. They eat, drink, shop and have families just like everyone else. What I have learnt is that most Bikers have huge hearts and lots of American Pride. complied. Wilson also repeatedly warned that the United States would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare, which was a violation of international law. In 1917, with the Russian Revolution going strong and Britain and France low on credit, Germany appeared to have the upper hand in Europe, and seemed to be gaining strength. That January, Germany decided to resume unrestricted submarine warfare, in the hopes of starving Britain into surrender. The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, after negotiations to halt Germany’s march into Europe failed. Over the next year and a half, when a ceasefire and Armistice was declared on November 11, 1918, over 116,000 Americans lost their lives while attempting to protect the world from Communism and keep freedoms intact. World War I was followed by the period known as “Boom or Bust”. The Roaring Twenties (the Boom) ushered an era financial wellness into the country: advertising became a driving force for the economy, and almost every house had a Model-T in the drive and a radio in the living room. Unfortunately what goes up must come down, and in November of 1929 came the stock market crash which led to the Great Depression. People were out of work and food lines were long. It seemed as if our country possibly could turn

socialist. Then Roosevelt’s New Deal was introduced, which implemented such programs as Social Security; the Works Progress Administration, which built thousands of roads, schools, government buildings and works of art; and the Civilian Conservation Corps which gave young people jobs to help the environment. The New Deal is often called the period that “saved capitalism”, and stopped America from becoming a Communist or Fascist state. Although the New Deal improved the economy, it did not end the Great Depression. The Great Depression was ended by World War II. World War II was the bloodiest war ever fought by Americans on foreign soil. Over 405,000 American soldiers, sailors and Marines were killed in battle, and over 30,000 remain missing to this day. This was truly the “War to End All Wars” and produced the greatest generation our nation has ever seen. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, hundreds of thousands of young men swamped recruiting offices to join the service, including many who were too young to enlist. These

men went to war, knowing there was a very good chance they would not survive. When doing a term paper for college years ago, I asked a WWII vet, “Why did you guys do it?” He looked and me and said “If we hadn’t, you’d be speaking Japanese, German or Italian right now.” He and the thousands of others fought to protect the freedoms America offered, and almost half a million gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our republic and keep our rights and freedoms. Since then we have gone to war many times to try to keep our allies safe from Communist regimes. When North Korea infringed on South Korea in 1950, the United States rallied to protect our allies in the South. That 3-year “police action” led to the loss of 36,000 Americans, with another 5,000 missing in action. In Vietnam we lost almost 60,000 service members, with 1,600 still missing. Between the end of Vietnam in 1975 and 2001 approximately 4,500 American soldiers lost their lives in various encounters with hostile nations, including 294 in the Gulf War of 1990-91, and since 2001 (the beginning of the war in the Middle East) another 6,750 have died protecting the freedoms of the United States and her allies. Since the beginning of our nation well over a million men and women have given their lives to protect the rights and freedoms our Constitution guarantees us. People

in countries such as North Korea, Cuba, China and many others have risked their lives to immigrate here, thanks to those who fought and died for freedoms that these immigrants know nothing about, rights and freedoms that we Americans took for granted until recently. These Americans who shed blood for us are the ones we need to be thinking about as Memorial Day approaches, especially during this time. Our Founding Fathers foresaw a nation where people were free to travel, free to work, free to start their own business, go to college, and raise their children without government intervention. Those who died protecting the Founders’ vision are the true heroes. In today’s times, with the government attempting to restrict and even ban our freedoms of Free Speech, of Assembly, and to Bear Arms we the people need to remind them that our country was founded on those Rights. They were bought and paid for with the blood of those who died both here and in distant lands, and they should not be infringed upon. We cannot let the deaths of those who died for our freedom to be in vain by allowing the government to take that freedom away. So please, this Memorial Day, remember those who sacrificed and what they gave their lives for. Let freedom ring, and God bless America!

more of a routine day than anything else. He was in similar situations at other times, but when he speaks of those times he does so with a calm demeanor of a story-teller, as if they were no more uncommon than a day at the beach or at the park. During the war he continued to rise in the ranks, and eventually was commissioned as an officer. Captain Tilley retired on May 31, 1973. He now lives a quiet life on his own little ranch; if you saw him on the street you would probably not be aware of the heroic acts he has committed. But to sit down and listen to him….man, that’s priceless. I cannot begin to imagine what it was actually like to have gone where he has gone, to see what he has seen, and to experience all that he has. Listening to him tell about his experiences is like having a living history book, only not so sugar-coated. If you know a veteran, don’t forget to take the time to say thank you. And if they want to tell you about their time in the service, be sure to take the time to sit down and listen. Veteran’s Day is more than just a day off of work, a time to BBQ and drink beer….it’s a time to honor all of those who have put on the uniform, picked up a weapon, and provided us, by shedding their own blood, the freedom that we have today. Please don’t forget that on this Veteran’s Day!
