by Johnny Killmore | Jul 9, 2021 For Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys It may surprise you that people in the military– whether active, reserve, or veteran– get interested in motorcycles at a higher rate than the general population. For me though, personal experience has shown this every time I’ve gone to the VA hospital for an appointment; the motorcycle parking area is chock full of everything from commuter bikes to big touring Harley’s. This also means that motorcycling is a hobby frequently lost by our nation’s veterans when they are wounded in combat. After losing a limb or having serious internal injuries, the long road to recovery becomes a central focus. “Will I ever be able to ride again,” starts out as, “I have to learn to walk again.” This long recovery can easily leave former passions and hobbies collecting dust in the corners of the mind. But it doesn’t have to be that way. John “Hard Charger” Barker knew this instinctively. A Marine Corps veteran himself, he was inspired to give the joys of riding back to combat wounded veterans when he founded Combat Hero Bike Build. Doing just what the name implies, John partners with builders, sponsors, and wounded veterans to take donated motorcycles and adapt them to overcome physical limitations that might be keeping someone from riding. Combat Hero Bike Build goes even further though, creating turn-key customs that could be entered in a bike show the moment they are given away. Some bikes just need kickstand modifications or hand controls, while others are complete trike conversions or sidecar builds. No matter the need, John and the builders he works with create one-off masterpieces, even going so far as to provide veterans with riding gear and roadside assistance packages.

in the United States continue to grow. They proposed that a day in September be set aside to honor the worker, and came up with the idea to call this day “Labor Day”. They organized a parade through the streets of New York to promote their idea and to try to convince the government to make this day a holiday. A public parade of various labor organizations was held on September 5, 1882, as a means of protest when the government refused to listen to their idea. Vice-president of the American Federation of Labor, Peter McGuire, was the one who recommended that the event should begin with a street parade as a public demonstration of organized labor’s solidarity and strength, followed by a picnic. They raised money for the even by allowing local labor unions to sell tickets to the picnic, and only allowed those who had a ticket to attend. Prominent labor leaders made speeches In 1887, Oregon became the first

state of the United States to make Labor Day an official public holiday. By 1894, thirty U.S. states were already officially celebrating Labor Day. In that year, Congress passed a bill recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day and making it an official Federal holiday, and President Grover Cleveland signed that bill into law on June 28, 1894. However, it was only a Federal holiday for those workers who worked for the Federal government. Beginning then, and continuing into the 1930’s, union leaders urged their workers to strike on that “holiday”. Because the Federal government allowed the states to decide whether or not to celebrate the holiday, it took until the late 1950’s for all of the states to ratify that Labor Day would be a public Federal holiday. For most people, Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer. Many Happy Labor Day! Continued on page 7

water parks and small amusement parks switch to their “winter” schedules or shut down after that weekend. Families become busy getting the kids back to school, getting ready for the fall and winter holidays, and preparing their houses and property for the upcoming winter. College and high school football teams often start their official season either Labor Day weekend or the weekend after. Back east, people are getting ready for sweater weather. And of course, pumpkin spice is appearing literally everywhere, from Walmart to Starbucks to farmers’ markets. Many stores have massive sales, advertising everything from back to school supplies to winter clothing to Halloween decorations. Labor Day weekend is the second biggest sales event in the United States. Only Black Friday eclipses Labor Day sales figures.

ed, people don’t call in sick as much, and the lazy summer days are a thing of the past, even with the temperature is still over 100. This Labor Day there are several events happening in and around the Fresno/Visalia area. You can kick the weekend off with a baseball game, then maybe head for the 10th Annual CVC Truck Show at the Fresno Fairgrounds from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, take a long, leisurely ride up to Shaver Lake or Lake Kaweah on Sunday, and hang out and party with your friends on Monday; or whatever sounds like fun to you! The main thing is to have fun! After the lock-downs and restrictions of the last year and a half, it will feel good to be able to return to some sense of “normal”.
