CC Biker & Motorsports Over 400 Veterans, Local Business Leaders, and Influencers from Reno to Bakersfield Attend the 2021 Veterans Motorcycle Run at Clawson Motorsports It was the perfect Saturday morning for a ride. As the sun was rising on November 6th, you could hear the rumble of wide-open throttles, as riders made their way down Blackstone Avenue to join the Veterans Motorcycle Run at Clawson Motorsports. This was the third year that Clawson Motorsports, Clawson Cares, local businesses, and local business leaders honored and supported our Central Valley Veterans, local Veterans organizations, and Veteran’s Day Weekend, with the Annual Veterans Motorcycle Run. Registration for the Veterans Motorcycle Run began at 8 am, but the parking lot started filling up at 7:15 am. The Clovis Kiwanis Club members fired up their grill and it was hard to resist the down-home goodness of pancakes, maple syrup, sweet butter, and sizzling sausage, all washed down with a strong cup of hot coffee to start off the morning for our riders. It was an event-packed day that also marked the highest attendance for the run. After breakfast, riders had time to visit with representatives at their booths that included the Army, Navy, Marines, Air National Guard, Sheriff Recruitment, Central Valley Honor Flight, Fresno Veterans Center, Wounded Warriors, the Suicide Prevention Van, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Chapter 33-5 and the Naval Sea Cadets. Beginning at 10 am, the Masters of Ceremonies team of Paul Haros with the Combat Veter-

ans Motorcycle Club Chapter 33-5 and KSEE24 Morning News Anchor, Brody Logan began the program with the best known military tradition: The 21-Gun Salute and Presentation of Colors. They kept the program running smoothly and introduced guests that included; Alondra Martinez, who sing the National Anthem; Terry Rommerim, Lead Chaplain of The VA Medical Center, leading the Invocation; Paul Loeffler, our local Honor Flight founder; Linda Branham, Wreaths Across America Coordinator for the Clovis Cemetary; Guest Speaker, Fresno Assistant Sheriff, John Zanoni, and J.R. Jackson, V.P. and General Manager of Nexstar Fresno, sponsoring Nexstar Fresno stations KSEE24
The cost to participate in the run was $35 and $15 for each additional rider. This included the pancake breakfast, lunch, and $10.00 in poker chips provided by Mono Wind Casino, (a sponsoring stop along the run) and when the ride concluded at Jackson’s Roadhouse riders participated in a raffle and enjoyed live entertainment from the local band, What Comes Next. All funds raised provide financial support for the Combat Veterans and CBS47. Everyone spoke of Motorcycle Club Chapter 33-5, a common goal; to recognize, assisted in securing over 4,000 honor, and give back to all who wreaths for the Wreaths Across have served our country. Here in the Central Valley, Wreaths Across America will be at Clovis Cemetery on December 18th at 8:30 am to remember and honor our Veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our fallen heroes and saying the name of each Veteran aloud.
Central Valley Honor Flight is committed to honoring local WWII Veterans, Korean War Veterans, and Vietnam Veterans by sending them to see their memorials in Washington D.C. Each trip costs roughly $1,500 per Veteran for the charter aircraft, tour buses, lodging, and meals – an expense covered by Central Valley Honor Flight entirely. Since 2013, the Central Valley Honor Flight has raised over $2 million to fund 16 flights and has transported 706 World War II Veterans, 330 Korean War Veterans, and 27 Vietnam War Veterans to Washington D.C.

factories and other businesses shut down. Food and fuel were rationed. Bread lines and soup kitchens became common. Many of the people who grew up during that time remember getting an orange, along with perhaps an apple, nuts, and hard candy, of course, in their Christmas stockings. Store bought toys were luxuries very few families could afford. In those days, most everything was homemade or homegrown, so it was common to get fruits, pastries, and perhaps some hand-knitted socks, a scarf, or a cap, or a homemade shirt or dress for Christmas. Maybe dad or grandpa would carve a toy truck or mom or grandma would make a rag doll, but store bought presents, especially toys, were a rarity. If children did receive a store bought present, it was usually something very practical, like long underwear or a pair of shoes for the year. Toys were a special treat reserved for only the very youngest children or those whose families were a little better off. But despite these difficulties, most people raised during that time don’t consider themselves deprived of anything. If anything, they considered themselves lucky. They had food to eat, a roof over their head, and a
family to support them…and they appreciated all of it. A common Christmas Day routine during the Depression consisted of waking up, opening what presents there were, then going to church. Afterward came Christmas dinner, either at home or at a relative’s house, where the men played cards or dominoes, the kids just played, and the women cooked. The older girls usually were in the kitchen also, learning from their elders. Chicken was usually the protein on the menu, as it was the most inexpensive meat available at the time. Relatives brought different side dishes and desserts, and grandpa always sat at the head of the table and led the family in prayer. And, despite their financial worries, everyone seemed to have a good time. It’s hard to imagine anything like that now. We live in an entitled world, where kids no longer have to wait for Christmas to get the latest video games or electronics, all they have to do is whine and parents will buy them whatever they want. Church is often something of an afterthought. Hard Candy Christmas Continued on page 7

Families are often separated by miles, and even if they do get together, they sit around on their phones largely ignoring each other. People have taken to ordering dinner, instead of preparing it themselves. Siblings and cousins bicker and argue over politics or some other subject and eventually someone will get angry and stomp out. Can you imagine giving a kid these days a stocking with fruit and nuts in it, and under the tree nothing but socks and underwear? The screams would be heard around the world. But with the economy and the problems with the supply chain, this could be our reality before long. Maybe we should take a page out of our ancestor’s book and go back to the simpler time. Start a homemade gift exchange. Get together and actually cook the holiday meal together. Put the phones and video games away, and sit down for a board game, or a game of cards. Play touch football in the back yard. Go to church. Talk to your family;
catch up with your cousins, let Grandpa tell you a story from “his day”, see who can tell the stupidest joke. Instead of making it all about the material things and family obligations, make it about getting in touch with your roots. Quit stressing over how much you spent on each person’s gifts, wondering if it was enough. Sit down, relax, and say a quick thank you prayer for the good things you do have in your life. Money and material things are nice, but things like your health, your family, and peace of mind are even better. Let’s all just slow down, and remember the reason for the season, even if it is a hard candy Christmas. Hopefully everyone reading this has a fantastic holiday season, filled with love and light… Merry Christmas, everyone! Ride safe!
