Our Freedom Isn’t Free...One Soldier’s Tale
T he weather
is turning cooler,
little hobgoblins are roaming the street, pumpkin spice everything is on the shelves of every grocery store....This time of year people start thinking of the holidays: Tu r k e y a n d d r e s s i n g o n Thanksgiving, Christmas lights and music, epic New Year’s parties, and the joy of spending time with friends and family. But before we stuff the turkey or hang the bright lights, we celebrate Veteran’s Day. This is the day that we, as Americans, should all stop and remember those who chose to sacrifice their lives and freedoms so that we may continue to live in a nation where we are free speak our minds, to worship as we please, and to celebrate the holidays that make us uniquely American. Since this country was born in 1776, hundreds of thousands of brave young men and women have served in the armed forces that protect us. The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard have shaped this country into what it is today: the freest nation in the world. So many gave their lives so that we may enjoy the lifestyle which others on this Earth are denied; others gave up years of their own lives to serve and protect us. One such person who dedicated his life to protecting our freedom is Capt. Leonard Tilley. As a young man I’m sure he never imagined the impact the Army would have on his life; nor the impact he would have on the Army. Tilley enlisted in the Army on February 20, 1953, and served in the Korean War, or police action, as it was known at the time. At the end of the war, he returned home and married his wife, Betty, on July 14, 1953. He remained in the military, and he and his family, which would eventually include two daughters and four
sons, moved all over the world, wherever the Army took him. As a young enlisted man, he went wherever his services were needed, and over the years made his way up through the ranks.
When the Viet Nam conflict broke out, Sergeant First Class Tilley went over as a member of the exclusive Special Forces Green Beret. He put his life in danger virtually every day as a platoon member on combat patrols. He helped lead his men through some of the roughest terrain on Earth, in a country where you couldn’t be sure if the person approaching you was an ally or an enemy. His calm demeanor and extreme courage made it possible for him to lead young men into dangerous situations, knowing they could depend on him to get them out. On February 7, 1967, Tilley’s braver y was at its most apparent. During a routine patrol, he and his platoon were attacked by a much larger group of Viet Cong soldiers. While the platoon leader ordered a retreat, Tilley covered them so they could reach an area where they could set up a defensive perimeter. During the battle the platoon leader was killed, and Tilley took over. He directed his men in battle and called in for air support, all the time firing his weapon and tending to those men who were wounded. As the men prepared to be picked up by helicopter, Sergeant Tilley single-handedly attacked the enemy with a vengeance, firing his weapon and throwing grenades, while his men safely reached the evacuation site. He then returned to the site of battle to ensure the wounded men were carried out and the bodies of those killed recovered before he climbed aboard the helicopter himself.
Tilley’s actions that day saved the lives of numerous young soldiers, and he was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Cross for his efforts. These were just two of the numerous medals this hero received during his long and distinguished career, and he certainly deserved many more. He put his life on the line many times, to protect the freedom that many of us take for granted. To listen to him speak of it, however, it was more of a routine day than anything else. He was in similar situations at other times, but when he speaks of those times he does so with a calm demeanor of a story-teller, as if they were no more uncommon than a day at the beach or at the park.
During the war he continued to rise in the ranks, and eventually was commissioned as an officer. Captain Tilley retired on May 31, 1973.
He now lives a quiet life on his own little ranch; if you saw him on the street you would probably not be aware of the heroic acts he has committed. But to sit down and listen to him....man, that’s priceless. I cannot begin to imagine what it was actually like to have gone where he has gone, to see what he has seen, and to experience all that he has. Listening to him tell about his experiences is like having a living history book, only not so sugar-coated.
If you know a veteran, don’t forget to take the time to say thank you. And if they want to tell you about their time in the service, be sure to take the time to sit down and listen. Veteran’s Day is more than just a day off of work, a time to BBQ and drink beer....it’s a time to honor all of those who have put on the uniform, picked up a weapon, and provided us, by shedding their own blood, the freedom that we have today. Please don’t forget that on this Veteran’s Day!

say, " What’s the Buzz"? Town gossip? Exactly! Traveling North on Highway 99, exiting Betty Drive, you'll come upon the small rural town of Goshen, CA. Smack in the middle of a huge black top parking lot sits a bright yellow burger joint called, "BUZZ'S BURGER'S". And folks, that's is "the buzz" everyone is gossiping about. Once you sink your pearly whites into BUZZ'S fat & juicy burgers, you too will not be able to keep yourself from talking about it and going back for more. Today, fast-food franchises are popping up on every corner, but unfortunatelythey don’t deliver that hearty home-made meal anymore. Buzz's Burger is a throwback of that good old family owned burger joint that many of us grew up with serving us quality service and food.
Buzz's is biker friendly (actually they love serving bikers) and has become my favorite fast food restaurant with a homemade taste, easy access right off the freeway, and a large new blacktop parking lot that is perfect for bikers. If you haven't been there yet, do yourself a favor and drop in and tell them CC Biker sent you.

A proud Stag is the crowning symbol mounted on the threshold of The Stag Saloon in downtown Exeter, CA. Several bars have come and gone but this Stag’s strong hoofs has carried it decades into a new millennium through the 20th century. Its antlers branch out to new customers while retaining generations of locals who frequent it. This is not just a regular bar: The Stag possesses a chameleon like quality that magically meshes the diverse social levels of customers & personalities. It is a level playing field for the average blue color worker & the executive; the rancher & the field worker; the local merchant & the college student. And it is the # 1 stop for a weary biker riding through with the promise of the coldest beer in Tulare County: it stocks a full bar, their prize winning (my favorite) bloody Mary and the pretty & friendly barmates that have a brain and offer good conversation as well as outstanding customer service.

A smoker’s paradise in the more Tranquil patio where Charlotte Correa the current owner and I sat and swapped stories over a cool drink and a smoke. E a r l y G a l l o w a y, s a i d Charlotte, was The Stag’s original owner. He first opened its doors for business in the late 30’s. There was a demand for a watering hole for the local boys; for the ranchers and business men to share their big fish hunting stories of elk, caribou and dear. That was a popular way of life in those days and women were not allowed in bars, remembers Charlotte, thus branding it The Stag Saloon. Galloway passed away some time later and his son Sonny Galloway and nephew Don, friends of Charlotte’s, operated it for a s p e l l . Fa s t f o r w a r d i n g , Charlotte observed that this local business did well each month and she made a smart business move. In 1998 the lucrative business changed hands, and Charlotte became the 1st female Saloon owner in these parts. Quite a big move for a little Lady, I’ll say... By Ghost Writer October 14th was a fun filled night. CC Biker and Motorsports and a few friends went to Keller Auto Speedway at Kings Fairgrounds in Hanford, California to watch the races at the track. We had a young man with us from Texas who had never been to any kind of racing events. It was cool to watch his face light up as the cars went around the track. He had no ideal that they would be running so many different kinds of cars. We seen 360 Winged Sprint Cars, Mods and Minis cars. There was a few accidents on the track, one hit the fence like 30 yards from us. Good thing the driver was ok and walked away clean. Tends to happen with so many cars on the track flying around as fast as they can go. It

is very exciting to watch is an under statement. We darn sure enjoy ourselves when at Keller Raceway. I am really surprised the stands were not full, they were only about half way filled up. We had a family sitting next to us, that the dad was driving one of the cars. It was fun watching the kids cheering on their dad as he passed by us. The crowd was very supportive and cheered as the cars made their way around the track as well. I am wondering if not enough people realize that Keller Raceway in Hanford has Races on Friday and Saturday night s and a great place to take the family for a fun filled night. I hope the next race we attend more folks come out and show them some support and have a good time doing so. We do want to Thank Keller Raceway for inviting us out to enjoy the show and plan to attend a lot more this next season.

By Sherry Chavarria I anxiously woke up this cool crisp end of summer morning Sunday, September 18th, 2016. Clinching my freezing hands around my steaming hot cup of coffee, Yes, I was up way too early because I was excited to finally make it to Visalia Harley Davidson's Customer Appreciation Ride to Cambria; this was their 20th annual ride. Surprisingly, I was the first one to roll into VHD, but soon after their parking lot was filled with a diverse selection of bikes as individual as the bikers riding in on them. I love watching each one roll in and I'm l always intrigued by the intricate attention to detail and individuality expressed by each rider. Lindsay announced that there would be three groups leaving. The first group was led by Justin in parts, Doug Marshall, the famous cage fighter and Patrick in parts riding sweep. These experienced riders were the right combo to lead a group of seasoned bikers. The second qualified group leader was Mike, in sales, and the group sweep was Johnny, our very own sales manager. And
last, but not least was Peter, in service, a perfect third group leader who escorted the cruisers to a smooth and calm ride to Cambria. Lindsay, our office manager and her daughter rode sweep "cage style" this time so that they could carry the goodie giveaways. I chose to ride with the first heat and I must say there was NOTHING BORING about the entire ride from start to finish. The 150-mile ride was invigorating while our group of 30 bikes rode high & tight, in sync, moving as one massive body on freeways intersecting with streams of weekend traffic. What a rush! I give kudos to the leaders who took every precaution to take us on an exciting and "safe" ride passing only when perfectly safe and making certain that we stayed all together. At midpoint, we made a pit stop, helmets off, as well as the layers of long sleeves & leather, some riders chose to douse themselves with water because Mother Nature reminded us that she wasn't quite ready to let go of the summer heat. We didn't need GPS to guide us to the VHD campsite at Cambria Park
because the nose knows and the tantalizing aroma led us directly to a hearty mouthwatering BBQ prepared by the rest of the VHD staff. As we parked our bikes, the sound of the high and low pipes echoing off of the swish sound from the ocean's waves was as g r a n d a s a B e e t h o v e n’ s s y m p h o n y. T h e v i e w w a s absolutely breathtaking as was the perfect cool breeze that cooled our spirits with all that Mother Nature & Visalia Harley Davidson offered on this beautiful day. For as we all know, everyone loves the coast and a good day is just a good day, but it's an awesome experience on a Harley. Diligently working to ensure customer satisfaction as always was Frances, in apparel, Jeff & Justin in service, and Johnny & his wife Pat.

Lindsay humbly shares with me, "It may not be a big deal, but it is important that we show our customers we appreciate them". I say that it may just be a ride & a lunch, but the BIG MESSAGE here is that this reputable business has a HEART as BIG as its NAME. Thank you for "THE EXPERIENCE". Lindsay shared with me that her parents came to VHD in 1996. As a token of appreciation to their customers they organized a coastal ride & BBQ to get everyone out of the Valley heat for a day. Twenty years later their idea has evolved into a popular Harley Family Tradition powered with Harley Love. I was impressed to learn that the entire VHD staff is

Black leather garb & Studs was not the dress code for bikers this Saturday, October 5th, 2016 at the Lost Girls M/Cs TUTUS for TATAS"- 12th Annual Breast Cancer Ride. The air was filled with love and laughter, pink ribbons and pink fluffy tutus that decorated an amalgamation of bikes, babes, boys & booties who rode through the streets of Tulare County. PINK, PINK, PINK everywhere! PINK is the color of the season & PINK is the reason; pink hair, pink nails & pink boots are only a few pinks I recall off the top of my pink bandana. Numerous bikers and cagers tried their luck at the endless raffle prizes donated. Several vendors set up tents and displayed merchandize for those who wished to purchase memoirs and all biker bellies were filled with an all you could eat buffet menu and deserts. Crazed hollering and whistling was warranted by the sight of outrageously dressed up men in pink bras & tutus lined up on
a made-shift stage: the main attraction "bra contest" added a healthy dose of crazy-sportsmanship. Our very own CC Biker Editor, Richard Tilley got into the action, donning his pink feathered bra and matching TuTu!. Unfortunately, his tata didnt make the grade. The winner of the TuTu Contest was "Texas Mike". But everyone appreciates all the gutsy participants who wore TuTus. Van Guritz s straight hand won the $100 high poker. And Lorena Landry, the grand prize winner rode off into the sunset with a paint job donated by R&G Paint & Body. What a carnival one might think? But there is a dead serious reason for this madness... The lost Girls M/C are very passionate about the reason that fuels this annual mad mission. Breast Cancer is nothing to laugh about and LGMC funds has thus far paid for over 280 mammograms and provided all the local doctors with vouchers for free mammograms for women
under 40 who are in need. "Every Woman Counts." is a federally funded program for patients over 40. Accumitively, since 2005, LGMC have raised and donated a total of $100,000 for Kaweah Delta Hospital Breast Cancer Foundation. The ladies work hard all year at putting this fundraiser together regardless of their own commitments as mothers, wives, widows; as single parents, students, or career women and all the hurdles and surprises life brings. CAT (Catherine Flaherty), LGMC President and her husband Phil, Bikers for Christ M/M, struggle with their own personal battles with cancer, but that doesnt deter her in the slightest way to abandon her life mission; the show must go on... And that my dear is how respect is earned... The Lost Girls M/C have earned respect from the community, as well as from the many motorcycle clubs that attend and support their annual fundraiser. The LGMC were rightfully awarded the 2015 Philanthropist Award as a Non-Profit.
Over the years the numbers in popularity as well as funds raised for mammograms has grown. I believe every female in the surrounding areas that rides was there, inevitably, the invitation was extended to men the past three years to continue the steady incline, and what a great call it was with 250 riders this year. The spark that originally ignited this MC was the loss of Bees mother who passed away from breast cancer in 2005. In 2006, Catherine "Cat" Flaherty, Belinda "Bee" Coulson and Cindy "SideCar" Dupuis decided to organize a womens motorcycle club and called themselves, The Lost Girls M/C forming the 1st womens only (Breast Cancer) motorcycle ride. The Lost Girls M/C is a nonprofit, 501c3 Public Charity, and they would like to express a special thanks to all their individual supporters, donors, and to their major Sponsors such as; Michael Murphy of TFW; Ruiz Foods; Momentum Broadcasting; R&G Paint & Body; Trinkle Ag Flying; Eagle Mountain Casino; Master Paint & Body and the Visalia Breakfast Rotary. There are so many sponsors, way too many to mention, said Sidecar Cindy. The following day, the world proclaimed trio, Three Girls and Guitars concert at the Fox Theater, staring Brandy Clark, Clare Dunn & Brooke Eden donated their proceeds, (over $9500.00) to the Lost Girls Mammogram Fund. Thats girl power! So, Start PINKSTORMING on how your going to decorate your bra, and remember to save the first Sunday of October for the cause. Next year "Tutus for Tatas" will be held on Sunday, October 1st, 2017.
