OMNIPOD ® 5 FIRST TUBELESS SYSTEM WITH SMARTPHONE CONTROL Insulet Announces FDA Clearance of its Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Deliver y System, First Tubeless System with Smartphone Control ACTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 2022-- Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ: PODD) (Insulet or the Company), the global leader in tubeless insulin pump technology with its Omnipod® brand of products, today announced it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System (Omnipod 5) for individuals aged six years and older with type 1 diabetes. Omnipod 5 is the first tubeless automated insulin delivery (AID) system that integrates with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System and a compatible smartphone to automatically adjust insulin and help protect against highs and lows.
Omnipod 5 is designed to make it easier than ever to manage glucose with no multiple daily injections, no tubes, and zero fingersticks1 to help simplify life with diabetes.
“Omnipod 5 is a life-changing technology that we believe will revolutionize the market and the lives of people with diabetes,” said Shacey Petrovic, President and Chief Executive Officer of Insulet. “We are incredibly proud of this simple-to-use, elegant system, designed to deliver unmatched freedom and to greatly simplify insulin management and improve glucose control for our users.” The Omnipod 5 System2 consists of the tubeless Pod enhanced with SmartAdjust™ technology, the Dexcom G6 CGM, and the Omnipod 5 mobile app with its integrated SmartBolus Calculator. The user has the option to download this app onto a compatible personal smartphone or to use the Omnipod 5 Controller, which is provided free with the first prescription. Every five minutes, SmartAdjust receives a Dexcom CGM value and trend, and predicts where glucose will be 60 minutes into the future. The system then increases, decreases, or pauses insulin delivery using the user’s desired and customized glucose target, helping to protect against highs and lows. “As the pioneer of integrated CGM, we are excited to see our years of collaborative work with Insulet culminate into the first and only FDA-cleared tubeless automated insulin delivery system,” said Kevin Sayer, Chairman, President and CEO of Dexcom. “Omnipod 5 combines the accuracy and unmatched user experience of the Dexcom G6 CGM with the simplicity of tubeless insulin delivery to offer people with diabetes a revolutionary new way to optimize time in range.” Omnipod 5 will launch through the pharmacy channel, providing customer benefits of no contract, no commitment, and no obligation. In the coming days, Insulet will offer Omnipod 5 in a limited market release so that the Company can incorporate learnings to deliver a best-in-class product experience. Omnipod 5 is expected to be broadly available shortly after the limited market release. Omnipod 5 was recently selected as a CES® 2022 Innovation Award honoree in two categories: Health and Wellness and Wearable Technologies. The CES Innovation Awards is an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products. Continued on next page

Theme: A Vision of the Future
This story was first published by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus November 30, 2021.
Halis K. Akturk, MD, led a recently published proof-ofconcept study to measure the accuracy of widely available commercial devices to monitor ketones in adults with type 1 diabetes. For people with type I diabetes, a build-up of blood acids called ketones can lead to a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition occurs when the body doesn’t have enough insulin to break down glucose, its usual energy source, and can lead to diabetic coma or even death. That’s why regularly screening for ketones is important for people with type I diabetes – from the gold-standard blood ketone tests to urine ketone tests. Recently published proof-of-concept research led by Halis K. Akturk, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics in the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, indicates that widely available breath ketone analyzers may also be a useful tool for adults with type I diabetes to monitor ketones. “The current available forms of screening for ketones are blood ketone monitors and urine ketone tests,” Akturk explains. “Blood ketone monitors are the gold standards of clinical practice, but they are very expensive and insurance coverage is poor – one test strip can cost more than $2 and they’re only good for a limited amount of time. Urine ketone tests are widely available, but the problem is they are not instantaneous, there’s always a lag time for results.” Akturk and his colleagues measured how accurate data from FDA-cleared, non-invasive breath ketone analyzers is compared with data from blood ketone monitors. “We were thinking that if these devices are easy, there is no finger stick, no blood, no urine, it’s a one-time purchase so you can use it often, could they be a useful tool for monitoring ketones?” Akturk says.
In analyzing the data, Akturk and his colleagues found significant association between measurements collected from breath ketone analyzers and elevated blood ketone monitor results in non-fasting adults. No similar associations in children were found. Measurements taken before breakfast were considered fasting, Akturk says. A possible reason that no associations were found in children is that the breathing technique required to effectively use the breath analyzer is difficult for children, or because their smaller lung capacity doesn’t let them exhale enough air, Akturk says.
DIABETES NEWS
RESEARCH FINDS BREATH KETONE ANALYZERS MAY DETECT KETOSIS IN PEOPLE WITH TYPE I DIABETES BY RACHEL SAUER
Akturk’s research also found that commercially available breath ketone analyzers are very sensitive to alcohol, “so any trace of alcohol falsely increases the results,” he says. “So we were suspicious that some extremely high results may have been influences by trace alcohol in toothpaste or mouthwash.” As proof-of-concept research, these results have the potential to lead to several further avenues of study, Akturk says, including researching why no associations were found between the two measurement types in children and in fasting adults. Also, breath ketone analyzers are FDA cleared, meaning they have been designated as not harmful, but not FDA approved for monitoring ketones in people with type I diabetes. Whether they receive FDA approval for this purpose will also require further research, Akturk says. However, as widely available devices that may be purchased once and used often, breath ketone analyzers have the potential to be useful tools for people with type I diabetes, Akturk says, which further research will consider.
In the study, adapted to accommodate at-home monitoring necessitated by the COVID pandemic, 10 adults and nine children with type I diabetes were given a commercial breath ketone analyzer and a blood ketone meter. They were asked to measure their ketones for 90 days, resulting in 500 paired blood ketone and breath ketone analyzer results, 372 from adults and 128 from children.

AFTER 26 YEARS AT BDC Susie Owen, RN, CDCES Senior Instructor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Mrs. Owen was a certified diabetes educator who specialized in pumps and sensors. She had been invited nationally to lecture on many aspects of diabetes education and care in children, especially pump care in children and youth. She had worked in diabetes education at the BDC since 1995. She had contributed to one chapter in the Understanding Diabetes teaching manual and two chapters in Understanding Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors. She had co-authored a number of additional articles regarding pump use in children. Two of her four children have type 1 diabetes. While employed at the BDC, Susie experienced the evolution of type 1 diabetes care from urine glucose testing and pork insulin to hybrid-closed loop pumping. Susie’s plans for retirement are to enjoy her family, hike, ski and travel with her husband, Bob Owen, and to spoil her grandkids.

JEWELRY
INSPIRED BY T1D BY MATTISON LEVA My name is Mattison Leva (Matti) and I am 11 years old. I live in Colorado Springs, CO. Shortly after I turned 11 and just a couple of weeks into the fifth grade, I was diagnosed with T1D. After my family and I noticed some of the symptoms at home (thirst, fatigue, hunger, weight loss) my pediatrician took our concerns seriously, and shortly thereafter I was admitted to Children’s Hospital with DKA. Upon returning home, I have taken a hands-on approach to my new life with T1D. I actively participate in the day-to-day management of my diabetes and with the help of my family have been able to learn about T1D so I can explain to my classmates at school and friends at dance what T1D is, what my medical devices are, how they work, etc.
12
Prior to my diagnosis, I was a loving big sister, straight A student, competitive dancer and small business owner. Post diagnosis, I am still all of the above but now do those things proudly rocking an Omnipod and Dexcom. I have been a student at Revolution Dance Academy for 4 years and dance at my studio several days a week. My favorite classes are Acro and Hip Hop. This year will be my third season dancing competitively with RDA and I am looking forward to what this season has in store. One of my biggest fears upon being diagnosed with T1D was that I wouldn’t be able to dance anymore. The staff at Children’s Hospital of Colorado and at the Barbara Davis Center taught me that I would still be able to dance. They have also helped my family and I learn what works best for managing my levels on days when I am dancing a lot! Those days can look very different from days when I do not go to dance.
When I am not dancing, I enjoy playing with my little sister, Maci. I also like hanging out with my friends, playing with my dog (S’mores), collecting/ listening to vinyl records, watching movies, watching The Babysitter’s Club and volunteering with Julie Bee Honey Caramel’s (I have gotten to help inside a commercial kitchen and also learn about teamwork, responsibility, showing up on time and other tasks that will help me when I get a job someday). Last but not least, I enjoy almost anything related to arts and crafts. In January of 2021, I turned my hobby of making jewelry into my own small business, Made by Matti. I design and make hypoallergenic earrings and necklaces that I then started selling at local craft fairs and the Fountain Community Metcalf Park Market. I was even able to start selling my jewelry in local shops such as Matchbox Candle Co., FestiviTea and my dance studio! Since my diagnosis, my visions for Made by Matti have changed. Starting out, I wanted a way to be creative while learning how to run a small business like my mom. Now, I hope that Made by Matti will be a way for me to advocate for others with T1D and to help spread awareness for the disease. My new collection, It’s Cool To Be Kind, was inspired by my T1D journey. I hope that when people wear the jewelry in this collection that it will remind them to not only be kind to others but also to be kind to themselves. I also hope that Made by Matti will show other kids who have T1D that they can still do anything they set their minds to, including running a business. Someday, I hope to start making medical alert jewelry for people who have T1D and also hope to someday host a craft fair of my own to benefit diabetes research efforts. I hope my story inspires you to be brave, to be silly, to be kind and to not give up on your dreams. T1D is tough but we are tougher!
