Gannon had another great week as the Tigers Quarterback helping lead his team to a huge win after last weeks tight game with Elkton.

Gannon had 22 Carries on the night for a total of 132 Yards and 3 TDs in the Friday Night 27-21 win over Havre de Grace.

NORTH EAST INDIANS FIELD HOCKEY SENIOR

Brin had an outstanding performance in the North East vs Perryville Field Hockey game on Thursday Night as her team defeated the Perryville Panthers 5-0.

Brin scored 3 goals on the evening adding to her two goals she scored earlier in the week against Elkton.

Scrappy defense not enough for Elks as Bo Manor wins home opener 3-0

CHESAPEAKE CITY, MD - It was a slow start for the Bo Manor Eagles, but they produced a convincing win over county rival Elkton on Wednesday evening for the Eagles’ home opener. In their lone match against the Elks this year, Bo Manor won in straight sets 2517, 25-13, 25-9, bouncing back

from a tough loss to the Fallston Cougars just a few days prior.

Securing the first win of the season didn’t come easy for the Eagles and Elkton was certainly not going down without a fight.

Up early in the first set, Elkton capitalized on opponent errors by utilizing their strong servers, including junior Jessica Keithley who stunned the defense and rattled

off two aces in a row, putting the Elks up 8-5. “We weren’t really expecting to get many points so the fact that we were up on Bo for a bit was exciting” Elkton captain Sophie Camphausen remarked. At one point, the Elks’ defense fought off three attacks in a row from Bo Manor’s outside hitter Rylee Lenz before succumbing to a passing

error. After five lead changes, Lenz served a pair of aces to put game one away and take a 1-0 lead. “We started pretty slow… we still have a lot of work to do” said Lenz who finished with seven aces on the night.

After missing last season due to injury, senior Raegan Lenz was ready to make up for lost time and set the tone with a powerful kill to begin set two. Elkton would again tweak their defense, at one point leading 7-4 but, both Rylee and Raegan Lenz read the adjustments and laid off the swings, placing roll shots over Elkton blockers. The Elk’s offense attempted some ball placement of their

own, creating a few passing errors for their opponent, yet a kill from Eagles’ Carcie Brown put the team up 19-10, giving momentum back to Bo Manor to close out game two. “I think we worked our way through playing better as the match went on” said Eagles’ libero Julia Holmes, “We didn’t start off very fast but got the feel for things after the first game and played a lot better. We started working on our communication.”

There was nothing slow about the start of game three for the Eagles, leading 9-3 at one point before an Elkton timeout. It became evident the Bo Manor offense was gelling a bit more,

communicating better, and even running some calculated plays while the Elks’ defense started to crumble under pressure. With the score reading 17-9, Raegan Lenz rotated to the backline to serve for her team. Lenz then rattled off eight service points, including four aces, to lead the Eagles to a game three win and a 3-0 victory over the Elks. “We started off a little sluggish” said Lenz, “we still have a lot to learn but I think we’re heading in the right direction.”

Rylee Lenz led the Eagles at the service line with a team high seven aces and five kills while sister Raegan Lenz led the offense with a team high

eight kills and five aces. Senior Julia Holmes recorded four aces while sophomore setter Hannah Beck dished out 14 assist to go with her three aces. Leading the defense for Elkton, junior Danielle Davis recorded seven digs and an ace while junior Danielle Rogers recorded two kills for the Elks’ offense. Camphausen finished with five digs and two assists in the game, “None of us have really ever played together,” the Elks’ captain said, “I think we did pretty good considering this is our first game together as a team.”

JV EAGLES GET FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AT HOME

The Bo Manor JV program earned an impressive home victory, sweeping the Elkton Golden Elks 2-0 with games scores of 25-6, 25-14 to earn their first win of the season.

The Eagles started strong in the first game, leading 7-0 after a great set from sophomore Skylar Bailey to hitter Adriana Scuderi for the kill. Bailey later recorded another kill to put her team up 10-1 before Scuderi rattled off three aces in a row, forcing a timeout for Elkton. The

game slowed down a bit with both teams struggling with serves but, the Eagles were able to secure a game one win despite two digs from Elkton’s Sophie Miller.

Elkton kept the match close in game two, beginning with an ace from freshman Angel Rosa to put her team on the board. Down 3-5, Bo Manor freshman Ava Guerrieri recorded six services points, including four aces, to put the Eagles ahead 9-5. A few rotations later, freshman Reagan Brown picked up an additional five services points,

including two aces, before Elkton took a timeout with the score reading 18-8. The pause in play seemed to work as Elks’ Dani Brackett remained calm at the service line to help her team get back in the game. Brackett knocked in four service points, including an ace, to bring Elkton within seven but the Eagles capitalized on errors and put game two away 25-14. With the win, Bo Manor improves to 1-1 while Elkton falls to 0-1 for their first match of the year.

TOME’S LADY TITANS START SEASON WITH 3-0 WIN OVER THE WEST NOTTINGHAM RAMS

COLORA, MD - The West Nottingham Rams (0-1) hosted the Tome Titans (10) for the first Mid-Atlantic Independent League matchup between Cecil County teams this season. The Titans won in straight sets with game scores 25-5, 2513, and 25-3.

It was a strong start for Titans’ captain, Katy Bullerman, who dominated the service line, recording at least 12 service points in a row before the Rams were able to return the ball for a point. A block from sophomore Natalie Siezak put Tome up 22-5 before putting game one away, taking a 1-0 match lead. The Rams kept the score close early in the second set. A block by senior captain Jenniah Odige put her team within two points of a tie, giving new life to West Nottingham, “I think the encouragement from the team is something we all definitely needed” said Odige, who is one of just

two returning players from the year before. However, the two-point deficit was the closest the Rams would get.

Tome once again heated up at the line with multiple players going on service runs, including freshman Ainsley Carrillo and senior captain Alivia Carrillo. “In the beginning, I didn’t feel like my serves were that great. I started working on my jump serve and towards the end I was getting some points.

Overall, I think we did pretty good serving” noted the captain. While a few passing errors near the end of game two gave West Nottingham opportunities on offense, the Titans ultimately put the second set away 25-13.

Once again, Tome’s serving was the talk of game three. Jumping out to a 11-0 lead, Alivia Carrillo went on yet another service run, recording four aces during her time at the line. She was also busy feeding the ball to outside hitter Katy Bullerman and sister Ainsley who had a team high seven kills

in the match. Ainsley Carrillo went on a nine-point service run to close out game three and the match. Ainsley finished her first varsity game with a team high seven kills and seven aces while Bullerman tallied four kills and seven aces as well. Alivia recorded a team high 22 assists and 11 aces to start her senior year with the Titans, “I’m really proud of how everyone came together, we had a lot of new players show up today and there was some great hitting as well.” For the Rams, Odige recorded two aces and two digs while fellow captain Avian Josephs registered a team high three digs for the defense. With this being the first match of the year for the Rams’ squad, Odige remained optimistic, “I feel like we did good as a team, we had a little rough patch with communicating but, we did the best that we could.”

Tri-State’s Lady Crusaders face off against Conference Rival West Nottingham Academy in Mid-Atlantic League Competition

ELKTON, MD - In Tri-State Christian Academy's 2nd game of the season, they faced a familiar adversary, in West Nottingham Academy. Despite playing most of his subs, encouraging his players to jump serve, positionally serve, and run plays, head coach Andy Mussaw couldn’t get his team to make enough mistakes to keep the sets close. Tri-State swept West Nottingham in 3 sets, 25-8, 25-12, and 25-2..

“We knew that most of their team was very new to volleyball, so I tried to put my players into positions to challenge them, and to possibly make mistakes, but they kept succeeding”, Mussaw said. “I was trying to keep the score closer because I definitely don’t want to be that coach that purposely beats a team 25-0. That’s just an awful thing to do to a new team - and a new coach.”

In a mostly offensive effort from the Crusaders, Baylie Thomas led the team with 5 kills, followed by Ashlyn Crid-

dle and Hope Pfadt with 3 kills, each. Criddle also shined behind the service line, and led the team with 11 aces, followed by Etta Harris with nine, and Jules Harris with four aces.. “Ashlyn could have served the entire 3rd set”, Mussaw said. “Her jump serve is very dangerous and they were really struggling with it, so after she served 11 points in a row, I subbed her out. Even then, we went on to win the 3rd set 25-2, and that was not my intention at all.” With this win, the Crusaders moved to 2-0 on the season. “Our goal is to keep the trophy at Tri-State this year, and I know I have the team to do it”, said Mussaw. “I’m pushing them harder than they’re used to this season, and once they get this new level of play down, they will be unstoppable.” Tri-State’s next game will be against Providence Christian Academy on Tuesday, September 13th at 4:45pm, at Tri-State.

Bohemia Manor Eagles defeat Tome Titans 3-1

CHESAPEAKE CITY–Bo-

hemia Manor overcame a nervy first 20 minutes of its season opening boys’ soccer tilt with visiting Tome School to dominate possession and create several scoring chances for most of the first half but could not find the back of the net.

That changed in the second half as the Eagles scored three times in the final 40 minutes to earn a 3-1 victory over the Titans Wednesday afternoon.

“We controlled the ball. (Tome) got a little bit tired. They are not as deep as we were. We tried to get them to press. The shots didn’t go in,” Bo Manor head coach Andy Mitchell

said. “We had a ridiculous number of shots today. We have to improve that average, three goals on 20 plus shots. I think we got over those first game jitters and survived those first 20 minutes. Being able to put the ball together and control it is kind of the way we wanted to end that half anyway. I was pretty pleased with the way we played the whole game.”

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles struck quickly in the second half, scoring just 38 seconds in to take the lead when Gavin McKew headed in a shot from short range.

Bo Manor added to its lead 14 minutes later when Isaiah Carpenter deposited a McKew pass into

the net to make it 2-0, but Tome responded less than a minute later when Jacob Herrera scored to make it 2-1.

Alex Parke capped the scoring in the game’s 67th minute when he whipped a long range shot into the net to make it 3-1, and that would be the score for the remainder of the game. Mitchell felt like the Eagles were better able to apply the basics in the second half than they did in the first, and that led to their three-goal output in the final 40 minutes.

“We had been talking about some things for weeks leading up to this first game, and we did some of them in pockets in the

first half,” Mitchell said. “At halftime, we talked about the fundamental things like stepping to the ball, making sure you’re open and making space. I think that happened quicker in the second half than it did in the second half.”

While Bo Manor picked up the victory in its first game of the season, McKew knows that the Eagles have to be more assertive with possession if they want to continue the success.

“We have to be more aggressive,” McKew said. “We’ll definitely need to be more aggressive. I feel like we need to go to the ball more.”

Cecil College men’s soccer wins first game since 2018

ANNANDALE, Va. - Akeil

John’s second-half strike secured Cecil Men’s Soccer their first win in nearly four years, as the Seahawks took down the Northern Virginia Nighthawks, 2-1, on the road Thursday afternoon.

Cecil’s last win was back on September 18, 2018, when they defeated Allegany College of Maryland by the same 2-1 score, but in double overtime. The Seahawks’ 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Seahawks outshot NOVA 13-4 in the first half yet found themselves trailing 1-0 after 18 minutes, thanks to an early NOVA goal. Cecil finally tied the

game with its first goal of the season from Ben Prest in the 36 th minute of play.

The Nighthawks reversed course and outshot the Seahawks in the final 45 minutes (9-3). However, Cecil would find the game-winner on an Akeil John shot that found the back of the net in the 81st minute. A headed shot from NOVA three minutes later was saved by Aidan Hayes, his eighth and final stop of the match. The Nighthawks sailed their final contest attempt over the crossbar in the 88 th minute of play. Cecil moves to 1-1 on the year with the victory.

Perryville Panthers Shut Out The Golden Elks

ELKTON, MD - The Elkton

Golden Elks and Perryville Panthers boys’ soccer teams kicked off their 2022 season this past Thursday in Elkton. The Panthers came away with a 4-0 win on the road to start their season 1-0 while the Elks fall to 0-1. “I was super proud with the way that my boys held possession of the ball and controlled the pace of the game” Perryville coach Chris Tome said. “I love the fact that my team is understanding that they need to immediately work to win the ball back when they lose it.” With a total of 27

shots on goal, Panthers senior Anthony Thompson and sophomore Dylan Sayer each recorded a goal while freshman James Abrams tallied two in his varsity debut. “I was super excited that a freshman kid that works as hard as James Abrams, got after it and scored two goals today” Tome said of his midfielder. The Elks’ head coach Andrew Fetterolf remained optimistic despite an early lineup change due to injury. “I think we started well, but we gave up a penalty early so that was kind of rough. While trying to bounce back from that, our

center back got hurt, so that changed how we moved personnel around. From there, it was just tough to come back from.” With several freshmen in the lineup, Elkton was heavily reliant on their upperclassmen to pace the game. “We had four freshmen starting… for them having to step into these roles last minute, they did a great job” Fetterolf remarked. Elkton goalkeeper Matthew Destefano had

seven saves on the night, including a penalty save while Panthers’ goalkeeper Finnegan Tome recorded 12 saves in the shutout win. “Perryville looked great today. Chris and Steve have improved that program a lot over the last year or two” Fetterolf remarked, “I’m looking forward to playing them again.”

Lady Panthers Soccer Team Defeats Elkton 4-0

Perryville–Perryville controlled possession for much of its UCBAC girls’ soccer battle with visiting Elkton, generating several scoring chances en route to 19 total shots on goal.

After scoring one goal on nine shots in the first half, the Panthers played unselfishly in the second half as they exploded for three more goals en route to earning a 4-0 victory over the Golden Elks.

“The main thing we wanted to talk about the girls is unselfishness. After getting that lead, we had girls who wouldn’t get much time stepping up. Two of our starters said, ‘I don’t want to be in, put these girls in,’” Perryville head coach JohnMyers said. “We wanted to possess the ball and find

those open passes. That’s what we did.”

The Lady Panthers quickly titled the field to their attacking side, consistently applying pressure on the Elkton defense, and that pressure eventually paid off when Sarah Murrell won possession near midfield, raced her way towards the net and deposited the ball into the goal to give Perryville a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

The Golden Elks put together their strongest stretch of game late in the first half when they had two of their four shots in the final two minutes of the first half, but the Panthers defense held strong and kept Elkton off the board.

Perryville limited the Golden Elks’ scoring chances the rest of the way as they spent the rest of the

game neutralizing Elkton’s speedy forwards.

“We knew they would play over the top. They have speed up top,” Myers said. “We just had to take that away and play more physically and not let them run through the middle of the field. When we lose the middle of the field, they are going to have chances. We just made some adjustments and took over the middle of the field.”

Macy Forest gave Perryville a two-goal lead just seven minutes into the second half when she gathered a rebound off a Peyton Geis shot and placed it into the net, and less than a minute later, the Panthers struck quickly when Geis made it 3-0 when deposited a Sage Cole pass in the net.

“I was going up the field and Sage (Cole)

crossed it. I went up and kicked it,” Geis described her goal. “I didn’t know it went in until everyone started screaming.”

Cole capped the scoring in the 55th minute when she settled a long through ball and chipped a shot just inside the far side goal post to make it 4-0, and Myers knew that the Panthers would eventually capitalize on their scoring chances.

“That’s something we work on practice all of the time,” Myers said. “We work that every training session, and we knew that they would come. We just had to keep generating those opportunities.”

Leanna Rogers tops all Cecil Runners with 4th place finish

CAMBRIDGE, MD - The fall season is here, and cross country is back! After a hot and humid summer of training, North East and Rising Sun’s cross country teams traveled over two hours for their first meet of the season, Cambridge South Dorchester’s seventh annual Rumble in the Jungle Invitational!

All athletes were excited to run the notoriously fast course, held in Cambridge South Dorchester’s “Jungle,” a large wooded park across from the high school. The Rumble in the Jungle course is heaven on earth for cross-country runners, as the three-mile course is completely flat and twists through well-main-

tained trails in the woods. Three miniature ponds dot the course for a scenic and enjoyable race for athletes and specataors alike.

The race was an absolute success for the Cecil County cross country teams. In the Girl’s varsity race, Rising Sun earned fourth out of 14 teams, with 99 points. Rising Sun’s first runner, senior Savannah Lacey, finished the race in 8th out of 134 runners with a time of 21:29.22. She was followed by senior Emily Wishart in 11th (21:31.89), senior Amanda Callaghan in 17th (22:27.89), senior Kaitlin Perry in 34th (23:50.86), and sophomore Maddi Cleary in 42nd (24:19.97).

of 20:30.01.

In the Boy’s varsity race, Rising Sun finished fifth out of 22 teams with 194 points. They were led by senior John Ferry running a 17:49.86 in 14th place. Next was junior Matt McKay in 38th (19:27.95), sophomore Nik Haraldsson in 43rd (19:34.68), sophomore J.B Lightner in 47th (19:43.61), and senior Eli Weston in 54th (19:56.67). North East boy’s team also had a strong race, earning 13th with 345 points. Junior Daniel Katz was the first finisher for the team, running a 17:49.03 in 13th place.

Senior Aiden McCullough finished in 22nd (18:20.05), with sophomore Celyn Evans in 104th (22:21.11), senior Richard Snyder in 114th (22:33.63), and senior Con-

nor Kwiatkowski in 134th (23:15.46) following behind.

The open junior varsity race also showcased fast times, as Rising Sun’s freshman Anthony McGonigle won the race with a 19:40!

Both North East and Rising Sun, along with Elkton, Bo Manor, and Perryville, will visit the Rumble in the Jungle course again at the end of the season for the 1A/2A Regional Championships. But first, North East and Rising Sun face off again against Bo Manor at Brantwood Park on Tuesday, September 13th at 3:30. It is sure to be another fast race as we kick off the Cecil County cross country season!

CECIL COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION EVENTS CALENDAR

Car Show - 1st Annual

Cecil County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring their first annual Car Show to be held on September 24th at the Cecil Arena. Co-sponsored by Passion 4 Pavement, Car, Truck and Bike Club, vehicles of all kinds can register for this show, running from 10am to 3pm. Day of Vehicle check in is from 9am - 1pm. Food, Music, 50/50’s, as well as up to 500 vehicles of all shapes, sizes and years. Parking will be at Rising Sun High School with all the festivities taking place at the Cecil Arena, 2706 North East Road in North East Maryland. We’ll have over 100 trophies and over 700 paved spots on location. Awards will be given to the top 100 vehicles. Register your vehicle online at cecilrec.recdesk.com with a $15 donation that will help support the Cecil County Parks and Recreation Scholarship fund.

Adult Soccer- Fall League

The Adult Indoor Soccer League will be a competitive league playing games on Sundays, beginning October 2nd at the Cecil Arena.Games will be played on Sunday nights beginning between 6:00 – 10:00pm depending on the number of teams registered by the deadline. Rosters, with a signed waiver for each player, and $400 registration are due before teams will be scheduled. The Team Captain/Representative must COMPLETE the Adult Soccer League Waiver/Roster

Form online before submitting payment. Teams will also pay ref fees of $20 per game given to staff onsite. If your team cannot make your scheduled game, and did not give a timely notice your team will have to pay for the refs time. Youth Kickball League

Cecil County Parks and Recreation will be hosting a Youth Kickball League this Fall! The season begins with practices starting in September and games starting September 13th. Players must register individually and teams will be randomly selected. Teams are co-ed and will practice once a week. Practice times and days will be determined by each individual coach. Registration fee is $40. Players will receive a team colored shirt. Games will be played on Tuesday nights at the Rising Sun Community Center Baseball Fields. There will be two age divisions: 8-9 years old and 1012 years old. There will be a cap of 45 players per age division. There will be a 6 week regular season schedule followed by playoffs. Elementary Movers- Soccer

Elementary Movers Soccer will be offered for 6 weeks this fall in various Elementary Schools across Cecil County. Movers will consist of six (6) weeks of practices, one (1) practice per week, with a Play Day at the end of the program. Practices will run from dismissal until 5:00pm at the school. Practice will be held weekly on Mondays. End of Season Play Day scheduled for November 19th at Calvert Regional Park. Rising Sun Fall Wrestling Open Clinic

The Rising Sun Junior Wrestling program will host fall clinics starting on Monday, September 12 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the Rising Sun High School Wrestling Room and will continue every Monday night. Clinics are open to wrestlers ages 5-18, with at least 1 year of wrestling experience. *Waivers will need to be signed by a parent on site.* Online registrations are now open at cecilrec.recdesk.com for the full preseason session at a cost of $20 or you are able to drop-in at the door for $5 per session.

Parks and Rec Cornhole League

Get your cornhole on! Our Cornhole League will run for six weeks followed by a one week playoff and will play Thursday evenings from 6-7pm at the Field 13 behind the Cecil Arena starting September 22nd. Participants can sign-up in teams of 2-3 players and must be 16 years old to play. Cost is $30 per participant.

*Participants will need to park along the side of the Cecil Arena and use the pedestrian walkway to get to Field 13.

* On Sept. 30, 1868, the first volume of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved coming-of-age book “Little Women” is published. Alcott dedicated most of her life and writing to supporting her family after her father’s failure at running a school.

* On Sept. 28, 1901, Ed Sullivan, who will become the host of the long-running TV variety program “The Ed Sullivan Show,” is born in New York City. During the peak of its popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, Sullivan’s program showcased a wide range of entertainers.

* On Oct. 1, 1920, Scientific American magazine reports that the rapidly developing medium of radio would soon be used to broadcast music. Experimental concerts were being conducted from the Radio Laboratory of the Bureau of Standards with local radio operators being used to see if the transmissions could be heard hundreds of miles away.

* On Sept. 27, 1930, Atlanta golfer Bobby Jones wins his fourth major tournament of the year, making him the first person ever to win the Grand Slam of golf. Jones had the picture-perfect swing of every golfer’s dreams, despite never having taken a lesson.

* On Sept. 26, 1945, Lt. Col. Peter Dewey, a U.S. Army officer with the Office of Strategic Services in Vietnam, is shot and killed in Saigon. Dewey was the head of a seven-man team sent to Vietnam to search for missing American pilots.

* On Sept. 29, 1954, Willie Mays, center fielder for the New York Giants, makes an amazing overthe-shoulder catch of a fly ball hit by Cleveland Indians first baseman Vic Wertz to rob Wertz of extra bases in game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in the history of baseball.

* On Oct. 2, 1965, a team of scientists invent Gatorade, a sports drink to quench thirst, in a University of Florida lab. The name Gatorade was derived from the nickname of the university’s sports teams. A coach had asked for something to help his players who were negatively affected by the heat during play, and the salt and sugar drink was developed.

To close out the weekend, 14U and the Wolfpack Cheer Squad hit the road to visit Middle River Renegades in an exciting 21-0 win. Zayd Fareed, scored a touchdown and made numerous tackles.

Football is showing they do not back down. With many spectators in attendance, the Wolfpack brought home many wins during week 3, to make for an exciting day of football this past Saturday.

6U traveled to Havre de Grace, to seal their first win of the season with a score of 36-0.

7U squad brought home their first win against Edgewood with a shutout score of 12-0. Jovias Brown scored first for the pack, with Julian Taylor following up with a huge 70 yard run to give his team the win. He is a player to keep an eye on in the future, with his speed and number of completions, he is a dominant force on the field.

It was a tough day for 9U, as they came short in the end with a 25-6 loss

10U brought an exciting game to the crowd with an overtime thriller against visiting Cockeysville. With a single touchdown from Christopher Westmoreland, the Pack put the game into overtime with a 7-7 tie, but ran out of time in the end finishing with a 13-7 loss.

11U were on the road in Middle River, as they took on the Renegades with a 13-0 win. O'Mari Ray had an interception leading to a 60 yard run, as Armonee Minter-Caulk rallied her team once again, with the only two touchdown scored and a one-point conversion for the Pack. They remain undefeated with a 3-0 record.

12U had a disappointing 26-0 loss to visiting Edgewood. Dallas Thompson had a 20 yard catch, Isaiah Yates had a 15 yard catch and Jeremiah Mar-

Siaki Young and Chris Benson also had one touchdown each. Kalief Roberts had a touchdown attempt, a touchdown run and had half the opposing team on his back as they tried to tackle him. But that was before the ref, realizing they weren't bringing him to the ground blew the whistle ending the play. Zion Thompson had several completions with defensive players Ziahn Young and Tassir Wright both contributing great tackles for the team. Frederick Fitzpatrick made a few tackles and assists along with some good hits also.
