IT’S TIME FOR

THE

REAL SPORT

was going to write about Bret Farve, or the Olympics and Bolt. I could even write about the Dream, I mean the re-deem team. Maybe I cold write about how The Mavericks made their biggest signing in the off season to Devan George, What? Devan George, didn't he miss up the Kidd trade? Maybe he was right about the trade, because Kidd only scored maybe 10 points throughout the Olympics. Or should I go off the beaten path and talk about the Texas Rangers whose season ended with the 19-17 loss in mid-August against Boston. Wait, why would I ever want to talk about the Rangers until they get some pitching? Although, I do like Ron Washington and the way he uses his players. Maybe I should write about the US Open and how Rafael Nadel barely won his first match. Not sure of witch way to go on this. Wait, there is a sport coming up that will be on everybody's mind season. I just want to ask one question. Are YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Yes, ladies and gentlemen it's football time. From the little league to the pros this is the real season. This is the true Americas' favorite past time. Yeah, I know we have those that will argue that baseball would have something to say about that. But, the fact is that during May to August everybody goes on vacation including me. Where are the blacks in baseball? Don't answer, it's a rhetorical question. Let's talk about football and the top on the list is the Giants and their loss of talent. New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after injuring his left knee in a 10-7 preseason loss to the New York Jets. Umenyiora had to be carted off the field in the second quarter of the Jets setback, and an MRI the next day revealed a torn lateral meniscus. Opting against short-term rehab, New York decided to plan for the long-term and the pass- rusher will undergo surgery. Injuries have already struck in the preseason and have claimed not Umenyiora, but San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman reportedly has ligament damage in his left knee. Merriman visited noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews this week to have his knee examined and told the North County Times, via an email, about the results. "[It's] a loose ligament," Merriman told the paper. "[I'm] waiting get more info on what I need to do." And, the biggest is Houston Texans wide receiver Harry Williams was carted off the field on a stretcher following a blow to the head early in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys last Friday. The injury WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

occurred on the ensuing kickoff after Houston capped the opening drive with a 44-yard field goal by Kris Brown. Williams was attempting to tackle Dallas' Isaiah Stanback when he slid off the runner and collided with teammate Nick Ferguson. The special teams' standout laid face-down on the field and medical personnel immediately called for a stretcher. The game was delayed nearly 10 minutes while they tended to Williams. Later, he was diagnosed with a fracture of the C3 vertebra. This is just the preseason; we haven't gotten into the season. But wait, I have to talk a little about Bret Farve, just a little. I can relate to Bret Farve, I just don't want to. As I peer into the Bret situation I find some similarities to what he is doing and a period in my life that I did the same. I was quarterbacking a company called the Dallas Weekly. I was courted by another company and I gave the Dallas Weekly a chance to retain my services. They felt it was not necessary and I chose to move to the highest bidder. We worked out an exit strategy and it was set. I gave my two week notice and hired my replacement. Trained him and I was set to go. The day I was to start quarterbacking the next team, contract negotiations' stalled and I decided not to continue the relationship. Here is was driving down the street and decided to go back to the team that I "retired" from. I was accepted back and given the starting position back, because I knew the offense and defense. The difference is that I didn't go back with demands. I was willing to except the role that was given. I didn't sit in the office with the owner for 5 hours deciding what's next. This was a clear and cut decision and we both were on the same page. Now that you have the story, I think I have the right to get on my soap box and rant. How dare Bret try to hold the Packers hostage? He's been doing this for the past 4 years now. He waits till the last minute to tell the club if he is staying or leaving. This year he gave a very convincing speech that it was over. He went as far to say that he's given all he had to the game and he has no more to give. I wonder what Jets front office will do next year when Farve puts them over a barrell. There is no question that he can still play, we just have to see if the line he plays with forces him to quit again and demand a trade. But that might be next article.

RANGERS

PICK UP WHERE

THEY LEFT OFF LAST SEASON BASEBALL WIRE REPORTS

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Year after year Ranger fans have to endure a season of ups and downs. This season has the looks for the same old song, just a different calendar year. What’s really crazy is they ended last season with 3 losses to Seattle and begin this season with a loss to Seattle. The Mariners bullpen allowed one run in four innings in relief, while Jose Lopez drove in two and scored a run as Seattle opened the season with a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field. Let’s not forget the stinker they laid against Detroit in April were Carlos Guillen finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, including three during an 11-run sixth inning, as the Detroit Tigers crushed the Texas Rangers, 196. Miguel Cabrera slugged a three-run homer for the Tigers, who have won three in a row. Only one Detroit starter, Edgar Renteria, failed to record an RBI. The month of April was brutal, watching the Rangers win only 10 games. May got a lot better, with 18 games won toped of by the never say die Rangers game against Seatle May 12. Ramon Vazquez's solo home run in the 10th inning lifted the Texas Rangers to a 13-12 win over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game set. The Rangers blew a four-run lead in the ninth, but came back to post their sixth win in seven contests. With one out in the 10th, Vazquez jumped on Brandon Morrow's 1-0 fastball for his second home run of the season, a shot to right field. "What a game," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We didn't die. We kept fighting." June showed us what kind of defense we would have and brought us back to reality. That month Texas won 13 games and gave up so many hits, it felt like a boxing match and their hands were tied. July was more of the same winning only 13 games. Being hammered by the NY Yankees, Baltimore, LA Angels, and Chicago White Sox. No two games showed lack of SEPTEMBER 1-15, 2008

defense more than the two with the Twins. In the first game Glen Perkins was brilliant on the mound to win his fifth straight decision, and Delmon Young went 4-for-4, as the Minnesota Twins crushed the Texas Rangers, 6-0, in the opener of a three-game set from the Metrodome. In the second game Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and finished with five runs driven in, as the Minnesota Twins crushed the Texas Rangers, 14-2, again in the middle contest of a three-game set from the Metrodome. That whole seirs saw the Rangers only score 3 runs. This month is more of the same. The Rangers are out the box with 5 wins but then there is Boston. Question: How do you score 17 runs and still lose. Answer: Be the Texas Rangers. On August 12th history was made when 36 runs were scored. Kevin Youkilis' second home run of the game -- a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth inning -broke a tie and lifted Boston to a wild 19-17 win over the Texas Rangers in the opener of a three- game series at Fenway Park. The Red Sox scored 10 runs in the first inning and at one point trailed 16-14 in the 37-hit slugfest. The combined 36 runs tied the singlegame American League record set on June 29, 1950 in Boston's 22-14 win over the Athletics. "I can say I've never been in a game like that," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "After that first inning when they had us down, 10-0, I think everybody in this ball park and everybody in all of Massachusetts thought the game was over." David Ortiz belted a pair of three-run homers -- both in the first inning -- and Dustin Pedroia finished 5-for-6 with five runs scored and two RBI for the Red Sox, who improved to 8-3 in the month of August. The Sox trail the Rays by three games in the AL East. Ian Kinsler belted a three-run homer and finished with four RBI, Marlon Byrd went 5for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored while Chris Davis drove in four runs and scored twice for the Rangers, who have lost five of their last six games. Frank Catalanotto added three RBI in the loss. Who knows what’s in store next but the Rangers better hurry up and get this season over with. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

he Dallas Cowboys enter the 2008 season hoping that their expected rise back to the top of the National Football Conference heap was only one year too late. Dallas appeared primed to seize its first NFC crown since 1995 after a brilliant 13-win regular season that earned "America's Team" the prized honor of home field advantage through the conference playoffs. The coronation was put on hold, however, when the Cowboys were knocked off their pedestal in the Divisional round by a New York Giants squad they had beaten handily on two previous occasions during the fall. It marked the second straight year the Cowboys were blindsided by an excruciating early postseason exit, this one possibly even more painful than the one-point defeat at Seattle in 2006 that was best remembered for quarterback Tony Romo's botched hold on a potential game-winning field goal attempt in the final minutes. Romo rebounded with a banner 2007 season that saw the athletic signal-caller team with mercurial wide receiver Terrell Owens and punishing running back Marion Barber for a modern-day version of the Troy Aikman-Michael Irvin-Emmitt Smith triumvirate that fueled Dallas' championship runs of

BY LLOYD VANCE, 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTANIMENT

the mid-1990's. The new trio, along with All-Pro tight end Jason Witten and a top-notch offensive line, enabled the Cowboys to pile up the secondmost points and third-highest yardage total in the NFL last year. The defense, headlined by big-play outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware and cornerback Terence Newman, wasn't exactly chopped liver either. Dallas finished third in the league with 46 sacks and ranked an impressive sixth overall against the run. Last year's Cowboys wound up sending a record 13 players to the Pro Bowl, each of whom remain under contract for the upcoming season. That enviable collection of talent, coupled with the club's pre-January performance, has made Dallas the consensus choice to represent the NFC in this year's Super Bowl. But first, the team is going to have to win a playoff game, something the Cowboys haven't done in more than a decade. The franchise has lost six consecutive postseason matchups since a Wild Card triumph over Minnesota in 1996. With the roster already pretty well set, the Dallas brass primarily focused on keeping its nucleus intact during the offseason, locking up Barber, offensive tackle Flozell Adams and valuable free safety Ken Hamlin with long-term deals. That philosophy still didn't keep team owner Jerry Jones from creating headlines with his most notable player move of the spring, the acquisition of problematic cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones in a trade with Tennessee. The decision to deal for the talented ex-Titan, who sat out the entire 2007 season under suspension for repeated violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy, was controversial but certainly not without precedent for the organization. The Cowboys have gambled and won on players with character concerns in the past, having signed Owens after the superstar wideout wore out his welcome in both Philadelphia and San Francisco, and bringing in troubled nose tackle Tank Johnson after he was cut loose by the Bears because of legal issues. Below we take a capsule look at the 2008 edition of the Dallas Cowboys, with a personnel evaluation and prognosis included therein: QB: Romo has taken his share of heat for his celebrity girlfriends and a shaky showing in the playoff loss to the Giants, but the undrafted free agent also ended any lingering doubts as to whether he can play at an elite level with his prolific 2007 season. The 28-year-old shattered longstanding franchise records by amassing 4,211 passing yards and 36 touchdown tosses, while his 97.4 quarterback rating was the best in the NFC. Brad Johnson is back for a second straight season as the backup, although speculation has existed during the preseason that the Cowboys were on the lookout for a younger veteran to supplant the aging old pro, who will be 40 in September. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

RB: After sharing the rushing load with Julius Jones during his first three NFL seasons, Barber (975 rushing yards, 12 total TD) figures to see his work increase after a terrific 2007 campaign. The rugged running back also plays a key role in Dallas' potent aerial attack, as evidenced by the 44 passes he hauled in during split duty last year. With backfield mate Jones having left for Seattle in the offseason, the Cowboys used one of their two first-round picks in April's draft on Arkansas' Felix Jones, a dangerous open-field threat who should make a nice complement to Barber's prowess as an inside runner. Dallas also nabbed Georgia Tech's Tashard Choice in the fourth round after the 23-year-old put together a noticeably productive career with the Yellow Jackets. Second-year pro Deon Anderson (6 receptions) emerged as the team's starting fullback before having his rookie season cut short by a shoulder injury after eight games. He entered training camp healthy and ready to serve as Barber's lead blocker. WR/TE: Owens (81 receptions) may be turning 35 in December, but the attention- starved receiver hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. The perennial All-Pro's team-record 15 touchdown grabs last season were the second-highest amount of his 12-year career, while the 1,355 receiving yards Owens racked up were his most since 1996. Witten was equally as important a weapon in 2007, as the four-time Pro Bowler topped all NFC tight ends with personal bests of 96 catches and 1,145 yards, while wideout Patrick Crayton (50 receptions, 7 TD) did a solid job in his first goround as a starter. The third receiver's job became an open camp competition after the Cowboys released injury-plagued veteran Terry Glenn in July. Return specialist Miles Austin (5 receptions) looked to have been the front-runner after a big game in the preseason opener, but he sprained his knee the following week to give the advantage back to special-teams stalwart Sam Hurd (19 receptions, 1 TD). Dallas also has high hopes for Isaiah Stanback, a converted college quarterback who played sparingly as a rookie last year, and young tight end Martellus Bennett, the club's secondround draft choice in 2008 who's competing with Tony Curtis (3 receptions, 3 TD) to be Witten's chief understudy. OL: The awesome numbers put up by Romo and the receiver group last year couldn't have been attained without the superb job done by an offensive line that sent three members -- Adams (left tackle), center Andre Gurode and right guard Leonard Davis -- to Honolulu at season's end. The Cowboys took some flak for handing Davis, a former No. 2 overall draft pick by Arizona who was viewed as a major underachiever with the Cardinals, a lavish seven-year free- agent contract prior to the season, but the massive lineman earned his take with a dominating first year in Big D. The front office showed how much it valued Adams by rewarding the four-time Pro Bowl choice with a similarly big deal before he was about to enter free agency. Right tackle Marc Colombo, who's entering the final year of his contract, could be next in line for a big payday if he plays to his SEPTEMBER 1-15, 2008

COVER STORY 2007 level. Left guard Kyle Kosier hasn't made anybody forget former Dallas great Larry Allen , but has been steady in his two years as a starter. To bolster depth, the Cowboys plucked guard James Marten (3rd round) and tackle Doug Free (4th) in last year's draft, although neither saw much time as rookies. Cory Procter and Pat McQuistan also return to reprise their roles as the backup center and swing tackle, respectively. DL: Although this was the lone area of the team not to have a Pro Bowl participant last season, it's by no means a weakness. Dallas' sturdy three-man front is headed by 6-foot-7 Chris Canty (43 sacks, 3.5 sacks), who's developed into one of the better run-stopping ends in the NFL. Head coach and defensive architect Wade Phillips plans to use a three-man rotation of Jay Ratliff (30 tackles, 3 sacks), Marcus Spears (30 tackles, 2 sacks) and Tank Johnson (11 tackles, 2 sacks) at the other two spots, with the versatile and valuable Ratliff (30 tackles) alternating between nose tackle and left-side end. Johnson, a starter on the Bears' 2006 NFC championship squad, played well in limited snaps at the nose upon returning from a league-issued suspension, but the former firstrounder Spears is coming off a mildly disappointing campaign. Jason Hatcher (27 tackles, 2 sacks) and Stephen Bowen (14 tackles) are big and able reserves at the ends, while ex-Kansas City washout Junior Siavii has a shot to stick as a backup nose tackle. LB: Last year's strong defensive showing was keyed by the devastating pass- rush combo of the disruptive Ware (84 tackles, 14 sacks) and fellow outside linebacker Greg Ellis (31 tackles, 12.5 sacks), who bounced back from a torn Achilles tendon suffered the previous season to put together arguably his best season. The Cowboys also have talented 2007 first-round selection Anthony Spencer (36 tackles, 3 sacks) in tow at the position, and he'll be used to help keep the 33-year-old Ellis fresh. The inside corps added a wealth of leadership and experience with the offseason signing of exDolphins standout and native Texan Zach Thomas (52 tackles, 1 sack). Although the seven-time Pro Bowl honoree will be 35 this FEBRUARY 1-15, 2007

season and was limited to five games due to injuries a year ago, the team is confident he's still got the speed and savvy to be an impact playmaker. Thomas will line up next to leading tackler Bradie James (101 tackles, 3 sacks) on the inside, with nickel specialist Kevin Burnett (53 tackles) often subbing for James on passing downs. Former firstround choice Bobby Carpenter (18 tackles) and second-year outside reserve Justin Rogers (18 tackles) are back to supply depth and help out on special teams, and Dallas drafted Erik Walden, an undersized pass rusher, in the sixth round of April's draft. DB: One of the few shortcomings on last season's Cowboys team was a lack of quality cornerbacks behind the injury-prone Newman (50 tackles, 4 INT, 13 PD), who earned a Pro Bowl nod despite battling a foot injury, and rightside starter Anthony Henry (36 tackles, 6 INT, 13 PD). That problem should be alleviated with the trade for Pacman Jones, provided he's reinstated by the NFL and can return to the form he displayed during his first two years in Tennessee. The dynamic defender has been on his best behavior since the spring trade, however, which makes it likely the league offense will give him the green light come September. Dallas also nabbed corner Mike Jenkins with its second No. 1 pick in this year's draft and plans to use the South Florida star and Jones in nickel packages, with the bigger but slower Henry supplanting the coveragechallenged Roy Williams (92 tackles, 2 INT) at safety. Williams was one of the few Cowboys who didn't meet expectations last year, but the much- maligned seventh-year pro still attacks the run like an extra linebacker when in the box. Free safety Hamlin (62 tackles, 5 INT, 15 PD) had an outstanding first season in Dallas, which garnered the exSeahawk his first career Pro Bowl trip and a new six-year contract. Experienced returnee Pat Watkins (36 tackles, 1 INT) will back up both safety spots, while fleet-footed rookie Orlando Scandrick (5th round, Boise State) hopes to figure into the mix at corner. Second-year safety Courtney Brown (6 tackles) and sophomore cornerback Alan Ball (3 tackles) are also vying for increased duties after playing sparingly as rookies.

FOCUSED ON ONE TEAM - ONE GOAL - DALLAS COWBOYS SEASON PREVIEW

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Cowboys also coveted Pacman Jones for his game-changing ability on returns, and there's little doubt that the troublesome cornerback can provide a huge boost to the team in that aspect. He has four touchdowns in 63 career punt returns and took back three for scores with the Titans in 2006. Crayton handled those duties last season and averaged a respectable 9.1 yards per runback, but the club wants him to concentrate solely on offense. Receivers Austin (25.5 avg.) and Stanback (26.0 avg.) each did a good job taking back kicks. Dallas is also young and accomplished at the kicking positions, with placekicker Nick Folk drilling 26-of-31 field goal attempts as a rookie en route to being named to the Pro Bowl, where punter Mat McBriar (47.1 avg.) went in 2006 after showing off one of the strongest legs in the league. Long snapper L.P. Ladouceur has been close to automatic since joining the Cowboys in 2005. PROGNOSIS: Simply put, the Cowboys are loaded. Dallas already boasted the most talent in the NFC a year ago, and Jerry Jones and his staff did a very good job during the offseason in keeping the team's core members intact and under contract for years to come, while also filling its few remaining holes with pickups such as Thomas, Pacman Jones and Felix Jones. Last season's short playoff stay could be attributed as the product of overconfidence and off- field distractions, and the back-to-back January failures should make the Cowboys a focused and highly-motivated bunch in 2008. Dallas' biggest question mark heading into the season may be how a team that has shown to be fragile at crucial times over the last two years is able to handle the pressure that comes with the favorite's role. The one who may be feeling the most heat is Phillips, whose easygoing coaching style drew criticism following the Cowboys' postseason demise. With a presumed successor waiting in the wings in highly- regarded offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, anything short of a Super Bowl trip could give Jerry Jones one very itchy triggerfinger at season's end.

OUT OF THE ASHES EMERGES A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS BY CEDRIC E. LYONS 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

In a world of unknowns and undiscovered territory emerges a man who was faced with both. Homeless before homeless was cool, Glenn Toby was faced with those realities. However, with a s t r o n g GLEN TOBY foundation, a great work ethic, and a great role model in his mother, he rose above the ashes. Similar to Will Smith aka the Fresh Prince, Sweety G was the given street name Glenn went by. Performing with Grand Master Flash, Biz Markie, Dougie Fresh, and Run DMC, Toby's career seemed promising in the rap game. However, with no royalties, for Sweety G this was a dead end road. So he concentrated his efforts on going to school and getting an education. He started his career by getting involved with promotions and marketing with other companies. This landed him on the marketing team of LL Cool J. After finding success in

music, Toby began to turn his attention to professional sports. He merged with Sports Agent, Alonzo Shavers to create Infinite Sports Technology (IST). He says that through the representation of athletes, he is able to positively affect change not only in sports, but also in the Black community. "My platform has always been to my players: you are the star on the field and I'm just going to brand you off the field, give you a voice, and I want to make sure you have plenty to say, "Toby explained. The real game, Toby added, is not played on the courts, turf or grass, but in the board room. "I think as people get the licenses for video games to clothing, to the ability to be able to write your own ticket and underwrite their entrepreneurial dreams and passions, these young men realize the most game is not played on the field, not played on the court, but it is played in the boardroom." Toby uses his influence to take an important message to the Black community, speaking at prisons as well as schools. Glenn Toby is the founder and CEO of Glenn Toby Enterprises (GTE). GTE is a leading International holding corporation that controls companies in the world of real estate, asset management, and technology as well as a multi-tiered entertainment and athlete management company.

WILLIAMS SISTERS, FEDERER OUSTED BEIJING - Roger Federer directed an angry scream toward his feet. He swatted a stray ball in frustration. He slapped his thigh, hung his head and stomped behind the baseline. And as a last resort, he questioned calls, something he hates to do. That merely made him madder: He went 0-4 on replay challenges. For Federer, it was that kind of night. It has been that kind of year. Federer's long slump continued and the bid for his first Olympic singles medal ended Thursday night when he lost to American James Blake. That was the start of an upset parade in the quarterfinals. Serena Williams lost to Elena Dementievaof Russia. And as the clock approached midnight, Venus Williams was beaten by Li Na of China. The startling sequence came in a tournament that had gone mostly according to form through three rounds. But upsets have long been the norm in Olympic tennis -- since 1988, no top-five player has won the gold medal in men's singles. Federer won't do it this year. With the sort of lackluster performance once unthinkable for

(2).

the stylish Swiss, he was eliminated 6-4, 7-6

The No. 5-seeded Dementieva, who won a silver medal in Sydney in 2000, raced to a 5-0 lead in the final set and held on to beat Serena Williams 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The unseeded Li then delighted a partisan center-court crowd by eliminating Venus Williams 7-5, 7-5. Blake's victory was a stunner in that he had won only a single set in eight previous matches against Federer. "If you play him enough times, he's bound to have an off day," Blake said. But the top-seeded Federer has been battling a yearlong slump that has left him stalled at 12 major titles, two shy of Pete Sampras' record. His Wimbledon reign ended last month, and he came to Beijing knowing he would lose the No. 1 ranking to Rafael Nadal next week after 4 1/2 years on top. No. 4-seeded Serena Williams struggled with her serve early against Dementieva, then staged a rally in the final set. Williams overcame two match points

during an 18-point game to hold for 5-3. But Dementieva held at love in the next game, sealing the victory when Williams pushed a volley wide. The loss came after the U.S. team had won 12 consecutive matches over the past three days. "It was what it was," Williams said as she left the court. "It hasn't sunk yet." Williams remained in contention for a doubles medal and was to play a second-round match later with her sister. They won a gold in doubles in 2000 in Sydney. A wayward forehand plagued Venus Williams, and she sent one long to lose serve and fall behind 6-5 in the second set. The reigning Wimbledon champion had three more forehand errors in the final game, and when Li hit a service winner on match point, the crowd responded with the biggest roar of the tournament.

HIS-STORY WITH GREGORY MOORE SAN ANTONIO " I understand what Yao said, but I'm still ghetto. That's not going to change. I'm never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don't think GREGORY MOORE he's ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture." - Ron Artest What is ghetto? That's a good question. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, ghetto means the following: 1. a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships; 2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live; 3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews; 4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results

Ron Artest doesn't represent the Black culture; just the idiot culture BY GREGORY MOORE 411 GUEST COLUMNIST

from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly. Nowhere in that definition does it say that the actions of stupidity make you ghetto or that you are representing a culture. But let's take a good look at what Mr. Artest, I'm sorry the 2008 cultural candidate for blackness, is talking about. But first, let me bring you up to speed on this event in case you don't know what he or Yao Ming is talking about. On November 19, 2004, the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons were involved in what can only be considered the most embarrassing aspect of the NBA, prior to the embarrassment of Tim Donaghy's gambling scandal. Okay so now that we got the preliminaries of what happened out of the way, let's really delve in to Candidate Artest's claims of the fact that being ghetto is just a part of the black culture. I don't think Artest watched the CNN special titled "Black in America". If he did, he wouldn't make this idiotic claim of repping the black world. In no way does this definition of ghetto, as defined by a renowned dictionary, does it refer to being ghetto as being a bombastic jackass or monumental proportions. But this Artest we're talking about. Rationale does not fit in his domain because if it did, anyone who believes that losing $5

million in salary is a part of being black or is par for the course in representing the black culture isn't rational. What Ron Artest represents, by his own definition of being 'ghetto', is the land of ignorance. African Americans or anyone who encompasses the Black culture into their being are not ghetto by default. Artest's reasoning represents what the world thinks of black men in general and that is a disservice to the millions of black men trying to do it the right way. He represents the idiot culture of life and it's sad that a supposedly gifted individual on the basketball court has no idea who he is in the world and what he truly represents. What's worse is that he is now going to play in a city in which the world looks to it as a metropolis of positive change and enlightment. To bad Ming and his teammates now have this gifted and clueless individual wanting to represent them in the real world. His world is not the reality in which we all live in. Gregory Moore is the Managing Editor of the San Antonio Informer, a weekly online newspaper at www.sainformer.net. He is also a contributor to many local, regional and national radio and television sports programming including ESPN NEWS, Fox Sports News, and Sporting News Radio. He is currently writing his first book, "Blackline: The disconnect between black sports journalists and black athletes".

Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Report PLAYER/PERSONNEL NOTES --QB Brad Johnson remains the backup quarterback. But the Cowboys are still looking to add another quarterback to the roster. They have scouted Miami quarterbacks John Beck and Luke McCown in anticipation of one of them being cut from the Dolphins. Tampa Bay's Chris Simms remains a target. --RB Felix Jones and RB Tashard Choice are proving to be capable backups to Marion Barber after rushing for 32 and 40 yards respectively against the Chargers. Coach Wade Phillips called their play one of the few highlights of the game. He said they ran just as they did in college.

according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones really liked the way Austin went up and got the ball. He also liked the competitiveness of the rookie Jenkins. BATTLE OF THE WEEK Miles Austin vs. Sam Hurd for third receiver -- The Cowboys pretty much know what they have in Hurd. He's a reliable possession receiver with solid hands. But the speedy Austin is the x-factor. The Cowboys need someone to stretch the field in the absence of Terry Glenn and Austin has the speed to do that. The question with Austin has always been his hands. He has had a strong start to camp so far and capped that with five catches for 64 yards in the preseason opener against the Chargers.

--LB Bobby Carpenter led the Cowboys in tackles against the Chargers. But he played three quarters and the numbers don't tell the whole story. Carpenter had been getting rave reviews in camp for his play. However, against the Chargers he struggled mightily and looked like the same old Carpenter that has had trouble getting on the field since being drafted in the first round in 2006.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS Courtney Brown is pushing Patrick Watkins at nickel safety. Watkins is the incumbent but Brown has impressed in camp with his range and athleticism. ... The Cowboys have an abundance of talent vying for kickoff return duties, including Adam Jones, Felix Jones and Miles Austin. Austin is the solid incumbent but the Jones boys bring the wow factor to the position. Look for Felix to handle kickoff returns with Adam handling punts.

--WR Miles Austin, NT Tank Johnson, LB Anthony Spencer and CB Mike Jenkins were among the players who stood out in the preseason opener,

PLAYER OF THE WEEK NT Tank Johnson -- He had a strong offseason and has picked up where he left off in training camp.

DALLAS COWBOYS Johnson was suspended for the first eight games last year and didn't go to training camp. This was his first offseason program work in two years and he is admitted to being stronger and faster than he was last season. It is showing. He capped his strong week with a sack in the preseason opener. ROOKIE REPORT RB Felix Jones was simply awesome in the preseason opener, showing why the Cowboys salivated over him in the draft with six carries for 32 yards, including a run for 19 and a reception for 28 ... RB Tashard Choice was nearly as impressive, rushing seven times for 40 yards, including a 19yard touchdown run ... CB Mike Jenkins had a nice effort starting in place of the injured Terence Newman with a pass deflection ... TE Martellus Bennett continues to struggle. He had a dropped pass, allowed a hit on the quarterback with poor pass blocking and struggled on punt coverage. INJURY REPORT CB Terence Newman (groin tear) is out at least three weeks. The Cowboys are not going to rush him back so he will be healthy for the regular season. --CB Quincy Butler (strained hamstring) is day to day. He has not practiced in two weeks and is falling behind in the cornerback battle. --DL Marcus Dixon (sore back) did not play in the preseason opener against the Chargers.

DESPERADOS 2008 SEASON IN REVIEW The Dallas Desperados finished the 2008 season with a 12-4 record to become the only team in AFL history to record three consecutive seasons with 12-ormore wins. Dallas also advanced to the playoffs for the third consecutive season - fifth overall - as the third seed in the National Conference before falling to the New York Dragons in the Wild Card round. The Desperados offense was highlighted by three wide receivers with over 1,000 yards for only the third time in team history, while also becoming one of only six teams in the league to ccomplish that feat in 2008. Wide receiver Marcus Nash led the receiving corps with the third-best performance by a Dallas receiver in a single season with 109 receptions for 1,318 yards and 33 touchdowns. Nash also extended his streak of 1,000-yard seasons to five - fourthlongest in AFL history - and had over 100 receptions for the fourth time in his six-year career. All-purpose athlete Will Pettis wrapped up his sixth season with 95 receptions for 1,035 yards and 25 touchdowns as he was named Ironman of the Year for the second consecutive SEPTEMBER 1-15, 2008

season while also earning his fifth consecutive All-Ironman Team selection. He also notched his third consecutive 1,000-yard season - fourth overall - of his career. Pettis also posted career-highs in rushing yards (37) and rushing touchdowns (five) while finishing third on the team in rushing and notched four games with 200 allpurpose yards. In only his second season, wide receiver Anthony Armstrong recorded the first 1,000-yard receiving season of his career with 85 receptions for 1,148 yards and 18 touchdowns. Quarterback Clint Dolezel continued to leave his mark on the AFL’s record books in 2008, becoming the league’s all-time leader in passing yards (44,559) while also extending his hold on the AFL’s all-time passing touchdowns list (931). Despite missing four games due to a shoulder injury early in the season, Dolezel still managed to complete 257-of-387 passes for 3,031 yards with 66 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also extended his league record of consecutive 3,000-yard passing seasons to eight and became the first quarterback in franchise history to top 10,000 passing yards (12,129) in a career. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

Fullback Josh White, who in 2007 recorded the finest season by a Desperados rusher, followed up in 2008 with the secondbest performance in team history with 88 attempts for 258 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, defensive end Colston Weatherington posted a career-best 10.5 sacks to lead the league while also tying a franchise record (Tom Briggs) for most sacks in a single season. He was named AFL Lineman of the Year for the second time in his career along with his third consecutive All-Arena First Team selection. Linebacker Bobby Perry paced the defense with a career-high 72.0 tackles, 17 pass breakups and six interceptions while linebacker Duke Pettijohn earned AllArena Second Team honors after posting 41.0 tackles, six tackles for loss and four sacks. Special teams were highlighted by a pair of firstyear Desperados with kickoff returner Josh Bush who finished second in the league with four kickoffs returned for touchdowns along with 939 yards and a 21.3 average, and kicker Remy Hamilton who earned All-Arena Second Team honors after connecting on eight-of-16 field goals and 101 PATs while also leading the league with six onside kicks recovered in 2008. You and Love and Basketball. She also appeared in the television show Sister, Sister as Vanessa. In 2000, Union landed the role of Isis in the cheerleading movie Bring it On opposite Kirsten Dunst. Bring It On helped push Union out into the mainstream and she began gaining more exposure. This led to Union being cast in the CBS television drama City of Angels as Dr. Courtney Ellis. Union was cast in her first leading role in the 2003 film Deliver Us From Eva with rapper L.L. Cool J. The film received fair reviews from critics and it showed that Union was a leading lady. But first, Union landed the role of Oscar nominee Will Smith's girlfriend Syd in the film Bad Boys II, a box office success grossing over $273 million worldwide. Union then starred with Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx in the film Breakin' All the Rules in 2004. Union starred in the shortlived 2005 ABC series Night Stalker. She has also starred in the independent drama films Neo Ned and Constellation, the latter of which was released to theaters. HE SAY/ SHE SAY THE DOUBLE STANDARD SPOUSE Discussion Point: What do you do if your spouse says one thing but does another. Example; your spouse fusses at you about cleaning up but he/she won't clean up either. He Said: Maybe the spouse is tired of you, Big Sign... Get Counseling! They are probably dealing with unresolved issues. She Said: The question is "What do you do if your spouse says one thing but does another?" One of the biggest problems in relationships is lack of communication. If you feel that your spouse has double standards in any area of your relationship, you should lovingly talk to him/her about how YOU feel about the situation without being accusatory or putting the other person on the defensive. Try doing things together... With regard to counseling, it is a good thing because it allows people to share their opinions with a neutral and objective person to act as "referee" to bring about a fair resolution to issues that might not otherwise be resolved in light of feelings that may get involved. I know for me, I get really emotional when I'm upset and sometimes say or do things that I don't necessarily mean to say or do... He Said: Is counseling always the answer or just a quick PAGE

way out. She Said: I really try to choose my battles carefully in order to keep a healthy union. I will not engage in an argument over dirty dishes left on the kitchen countertop--once they are left there--even if the dishwasher is empty. However, if he gets up from the dining table before me and I have an empty dishwasher, I would casually remind him by saying: "hon, can you please rinse them before you put the dishes in the dishwasher?" it does the job all the time! I know that it is easier said than done but, I truly believe that the only person that can be changed is yourself. And, good habits are harder to acquire than bad ones. Moreover, repetition works as long as you are consistent. One last thing...men and women, we really are wired differently. He Said: The bottom line is don’t have a double standard in your relationship. I know it’s hard because where the two are placed in the relationship. The man is the head of the household once the household has been established. Before that can ever be established, that has to be a since of compromise. SPOKEN WORD

GIRLS VS. GROWN WOMEN Grown women revel in it-using it as a time for personal growth. Girls ignore the good guys. Grown women ignore the bad guys. BY MALAIKA ALANA

Girls leave their schedule wide-open and wait for a guy to call and make plans. Grown women make their own plans and nicely tell the guy to get in where he fits in. Girls want to control the man in their life. Grown women know that if he's truly hers, he doesn't need controlling. Girls check you for not calling them. Grown women are too busy to realize you hadn't. Girls hold grudges, stay mad for 40 years, and don't get mad but get even Grown women confront the situation and don't get mad but get ahead Girls envy those who move ahead and hate the players Grown women shares her knowledge and help other move ahead by not hating the players but teaching the rules to the game Girls try to put a man 'on lock' by using sex. Grown women know that it's the sex of the mental kind that makes a man want to 'Lock' you down. Girls fake-moan, lay there and take the stabbing. Grown women say, "Just stop", get up, get dressed and walk out. Girls are afraid to be alone. SEPTEMBER 1-15, 2008

Girls make you come. Grown women make you come home. Girls worry about not being pretty and/or good enough for their man. Grown women know that they are pretty and/or good enough for any man. Girls try to monopolize all their man's time (i.e. don't want him hanging with his friends). Grown women realize that a lil' bit of space makes the 'together time' even more special and goes to kick it with her own friends! Girls think a guy crying is weak. Grown women offer their shoulder and a tissue. Girls want to be spoiled and 'tell' their man so. Grown women show him and make him comfortable enough to reciprocate w/o fear of losing his manhood. Girls get hurt by one man and make all men pay for it. Grown women know that was just one man. Girls fall in love, chase aimlessly after the object of their affection, ignoring all signs. Grown women know that sometimes the one you love, doesn't always love you back and moves on without bitterness. Girls will read this and get an attitude. Grown women will read this and pass it on to other grown women!! PAGE

Networking Spot Light on Milli Millis Who Is Millhouse Entertainment?

M

ildred L. Batts, a.k.a "Milli Mills", launched M i l l h o u s e Entertainment in 1998 in Memphis, TN. The name "Millhouse" originated from a portion of Milli's name, along with the idea that millons could be generated in her house of entertainment to help salvage the needs and appetitie of desperately seeking artists, "Serving The Appetite Of The Hungry Artist". It all began for Milli at the tender age of three, dancing around her living room at home with family and friends. At age seven, Milli's sister noticed the passion and talent Milli had and enterted her in a high school talent show. After receiving enormous recognition from the experience, Milli knew that the entertainment industry was the place for her. From there stemmed several middle school and high school talent competitions. Being a small town girl with big dreams, Milli was influenced by Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Prince in her early years. Wanting to branch out into the business, Milli attended college and majored in a field closely related to entertainment to help solidify her career in the entertainment industry. That field was Speech and Theater with a concentration in Communications. Using her education as a vehicle and networking tool to place her in the environment, Milli received her first break in the industry at a nearby campus

Since her university days, Milli has worked in several markets for various radio stations including KIPR Power 92.3 Jams in Little Rock, AR and Delta Froce II 104.9 (formerly KCLT) in West Helena, AR, where she served as the Program Director for two years. For ten years, Milli was in the spotlight in the Memphis market while working for the following radio stations: WHRK K-97 FM, WLOK Gospel AM 1340, WMC-FM 100, KJMS, Smooth Jams 101.1 FM, KXHT Hot 107.1 FM, WSRR Star 98.1 FM and The River WRVR 104.5 FM. While burning up the airwaves, Milli continued to develop her managerial and operational skills with Millhou$e Productions by managing and promoting Mid-South artists such as Mr. Del, Miscellaneous, L.E.N. , Men-E-Faces, Don Frison and Are'le. The development of Milli's managerial skills blossomed when she joined a hip-hop dance troop in 1993 called Suave'ious. At the time, Mildred was an air talent for WHRK K-97 FM, with the stage name of "Milli Mills", and had inside access to upcoming concerts as well as concert promoters. This access, long with Mildred's charismatic personality, led Mildred to becoming the booking agent and publicist for the group Suave'ious. After seeing that she

had a knack for promoting, managing and grooming, Mildred went to start her own entertainment company, Millhouse Entertainment. Milli Mills served as an extra in the 1993 Tom Cruise blockbuster movie, "The Firm", and was chosen in 1998 by Ebony Magazine as one of the "Top 25 Most Sucessful Black Female Singles" in America, voiced many local and regional radio and TV commerical spots, in addition to appearing in several local and regional TV commericials. Two years later, Milli was invited by Memphis' Virgin/Rap-A-Lot Records Hip-Hop Artist, Tela, to appear on his 2000 album "The World Ain't Enough" doing character dialogue bits and chorus hooks to add to her repertoire. While broadening her horizons in the entertainment industry, Milli relocated to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex in January 2002. Since then, Milli has formed an alliance with other producers and entertainment icons in the DFW Metroplex; thus expanding her busines and achieving a higher level of success. Her skillset was further enhanced by obtaining a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in 2004. For years, ABC Radio Networks has experienced Milli's talents first-hand as she currently serves as a clearance representative and weekend air personality for The Touch: Today's R&B and Old School. In addition to Milli Mills many talents, she is also a voice-over artist, choreographer and upcoming actress. As a new member of the American Federation for Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), we hope to see Ms. Mills on the BIG SCREEN soon!

PERSONALS

THE URBAN EXPERIMENT

MYSPACE BLOGGERS BY ERIC BROOKS.COM 411 GUEST COLUMNIST

LADIES, BEWARE OF THE “NICE GUY There's a difference between a genuinely nice guy (lower case) and a "Nice Guy" (capital letters). A nice guy is just a decent person looking to have fun and connect with people online. Nothing wrong with being a flirt either... it makes the online community that much more livelier.

A CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS COSBY PROGRAM The Guy Hanks & Marvin Miller Screenwriting Program Sponsored by Bill & Camille Cosby

The "Nice Guy," however, is a predator of the "Jekyll & Hyde" variety. Eager to appear as a "Knight in Shining Armour" in front of everyone... but behind the scenes, they keep their nasty side hidden until they have enough popularity and your personal information to hold you hostage emotionally for as long as it amuses them. There is *ALWAYS* an ulterior motive behind what they say and do. Signs of a Nice Guy: Agrees with *everything* you say and do. Expressing your opinions as their own. Appeals to an emotional argument rather than a logical one, and ready to "leap to the rescue and spring into action" to impress the object of his affections. Would prefer to continue the relationship out of the public eye (i.e.: emails, IM, phone, etc) Uses some kind of a traumatic event in his life (real, imagined, or greatly exaggerated) as a backdrop to gain sympathy and explain his uncharacteristic outbursts and wanting you to open up and share your pain and personal details with them. Moving the relationship too fast, or beyond your comfort levels... while reminding you of his past trauma, earning your trust through pity, and using it as an excuse to cross the line. Tries to get information out of your friends that you were already reluctant to give him when asked. Openly hostile toward/feeling threatened by Alpha Males. They're "suck ups" at first, but once they get popular by association... they set out to prove they're "different" from the other guys. You feel you're constantly being "watched" and "monitored" by the Nice Guy. Being stifled and unable to express yourself freely without getting a private message of disapproval from him. A feeling of "suffocation". PAGE

SCREENWRITING PROGRAM aka The Cosby Program, will be accepting applications from July 15th to September 15, 2008. This program was established by Drs. Bill and Camille Cosby at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. Unaffiliated with USC, the goal of the Hanks-Miller Program is to develop the pool of qualified African-American writers in the entertainment industry. This program meets twice a week for 15-weeks beginning February 2009. It is designed to assist writers in completing a television or feature script, while giving them the opportunity to examine African-American history, culture and iconography. Tuition is free to those selected. Our program is not designed for beginning-level writers. We are seeking writers who have taken the initiative to formally study television or feature writing through workshops or classes; though a degree in cinematic writing or filmmaking is not required. In an industry that is extremely competitive, we have found our greatest success in assisting those who have a strong foundation in television or screen writing and have a body of work to show for their efforts. Writers selected for this program usually have no produced credits, but are on the brink of great success. They are able to use the product and the relationships they create in this unique workshop environment to advance their careers. The Hanks-Miller Program is credited with introducing more successful AfricanAmerican writers into the entertainment industry than any other program of its type. Our alumni are highly respected and sought after. They are a primary recruiting source for the Disney Writing Fellowship, the Fox Diversity Program, CBS Television Program, the Nickelodeon Writers' Program and the Warner Brothers Comedy and Drama Writing Program. Our alumni are represented by top agencies including UTA, William Morris, ICM and CAA, to name a few. Although obtaining employment is not the primary goal of the program, alumni have used scripts developed in the program to secure positions as television and feature writers, producers, directors and executives. Our writers have created, written and produced for top ten shows on televisions, as well as news and reality television shows. They have also completed countless freelance assignments. This past season our writers were staffed on: "Private Practice," "Ghost Whisperer," "Lincoln Heights," "Saving Grace," "Cavemen," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Just Jordan," "Kyle XY," "About the Girl," and "House of Payne." Our Feature writers have received honors through "Tribeca All Access," "Hollywood Black Film Festival," "Screenplay Festival 2006," Austin Film Festival and "Fade In Magazine." They have also completed independent features and short films as well. Our writers have also been recognized by organizations including the NAACP, while the Program itself has been recognized by the California Governor's office, a State Senator and the Los Angeles Mayor's office. For more information or to obtain an application visit our website at http://www.CosbyProgram.com Please pass this press release on to African-American writers whom you feel would benefit from this program.
