About our Awards

The CEDIA Awards represent the best of the best, an annual showcase of excellence demonstrated by home technology professionals and manufacturers across the globe. The scheme recognises the top projects, products, and individuals in the residential electronic systems industry. From whole home audio to lighting systems, from dedicated home cinemas and media rooms to networking and automation solutions, you’re sure to find inspiration and ideas when it comes to technology for the home.

The Awards is held regionally in the Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA regions, a panel of global judges assessed all winning entries from the three regions and identified “the best of the best.”

The industry came together in force. CEDIA Asia Pacific celebrated the work of its members during a ceremony at the Tech Summit and Conference in Tweed Heads, Australia. There was a full house for the evening event celebrating winners from Australia, New Zealand, and China.

The event was supported by headline sponsor, Snap One; silver sponsors Amber Technology, Krix Loudspeakers, and Sound United; category sponsors, Crestron, MarkApp, Origin Acoustics, LA Lounge, and Design Show Australia; and media partner Sound & Image.

CEDIA Awards | Judges

The CEDIA Awards are judged by an impartial panel of experts, without whose support as volunteers, the Awards program would not be possible. Technical judges from the EMEA membership have assessed the project installation winners, paying close attention to every aspect of the project; from design and product specification, to calibration and documentation. The architectural judges consider how technology has complemented the architecture and interior design.

PROJECT A Vivid Apartment

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Sentiment HiFi

For this project, the Sentiment HiFi team was approached by a successful businessman who already owned a villa in the suburbs of Shanghai but wanted something a bit closer to his office. He chose a 300m² apartment in the ancient French Concession of Shanghai surrounded by restaurants, shops, and phoenix trees.

To create a comfortable space outfitted to his liking, the team chose a six-part system comprised of audio distribution, network, lighting control (DALI), shade control, HVAC, and security. Controlling it all is Chinese integration system, Zhengjue, which features a Chinese interface and allows the client to control his home remotely.

At the access gate, the client can use a single touch of a specific finger to launch the ‘welcome’ scene. At night, the shades close and the lights turn on in the living and dining rooms. If the customer uses another finger, it means he has a guest with him, and the lighting system will spread step by step to light the whole living room from the entrance to the sitting room. In emergency situations, the homeowner can push the button with his thumb to discretely send out an SOS signal to a certain phone number.

With the KNX and DALI systems, the integrators programmed various lighting scenes for the homeowner. When night falls, the home gradually lights up to accommodate for the setting sun. They’ve also programmed the shades to close and fireplace to turn on in the winter months. On cloudy and rainy days, the solar sensor triggers the lighting system to illuminate the space.

Through carefully curating lighting, the apartment becomes as vivid and delicate as the outdoor space surrounding the building.

Boutique AV identified the client’s key entertainment areas as the living room, dining room, and kitchen, and designed a powerful audio system to complement his lifestyle.

PROJECT Elevated Technology

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Boutique AV Solutions

Boutique AV Solutions not only won the award for Best Integrated Home Level II, they also won over their client who interviewed several integration companies before deciding their firm was the best fit.

The client had a tall order and wanted everything an integrated home could offer, including multi-room AV, lighting control, motorised blinds and shades, WiFi/ networking, HVAC integration, security, and more. In fact, his exact words were, “I want to feel like Iron Man.”

Like the Marvel superhero, the client also enjoys a good party. After identifying his key entertainment areas, the design team went to work putting together a discrete yet powerful audio system. The living room features a 7.1 surround sound system that can also link to the 4.1 dining room system for party mode. The powerful SVS subwoofers have been perfectly balanced and tuned for the client’s preferred choice of music. For a seamless experience, the video and audio sources can be viewed and listened to on any display or speaker installed across the sub-penthouse.

By working closely with the team of designers, engineers, technicians, and software developers Boutique AV was able to exceed the client’s expectations and create an extraordinary way of living. They built and nurtured trust, delivered attentive professionalism and creative solutions, and provided a high standard of quality every step of the way.

The client was so pleased that he has become somewhat of a mascot for the company, and has already recommended Boutique AV to several of his friends.

PROJECT The Riad

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Bridger Automation Pty Ltd

The idea for this home, which began back in 2010, was to encompass all the fine, exotic and spectacular features seen in famous hotels around the world. A ‘Riad’ is a type of traditional Moroccan and Andalusi interior garden or courtyard associated with house and palace architecture. The owners love this style of architecture so much, they wanted to base the design of their home off the famous hotel ’La Mamounia’, in Marrakech, Morocco.

All the systems are tied together by the RTI Automation Control Architecture, with an RTI XP-8s as the primary control method. A Zektor 16x16 Card Frame HDMI HDBaseT Switcher handles the video of six inputs and 16 outputs. HDMI Signals are sent over Cat5e to each location using Zigen HDBaseT Receivers. All audio switching and volume control is primarily managed by the Zektor 16x16 audio matrix. The Zektor accepts all inputs from input sources and controls the switching and volume control for the outputs. Output audio is then passed to the powered amplifiers and speakers.

To keep the traditional Morrocan style intact, the team made special accommodations to conceal the technology by creating as many wireless connections as possible.

Throughout the 12 years that it took to complete the project, an interior designer never stepped foot on site. The clients could not find anyone who could see their vision, so they ended up designing it all themselves. When things arrived in shipping containers, they designed sections of the home around those pieces. A normal build would select fixtures depending on the home’s features, not the other way around. This led to a project that was ever evolving and time consuming, but ultimately rewarding for everyone involved.

Without strong technical nous, the main request from the retired couple was that the system be reliable and simple to use.

PROJECT Penthouse in the Park

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Automation Associates

When a retired couple approached Automation Associates about their home, their main request was that the technology be kept simple. As the team peeled back the layers on what types of functionalities the couple was looking for, they also uncovered some disparate tastes between the pair.

To ensure the system fit both of their preferences, Automation Associates created ‘his’ and ’her’ lounges with functionalities suited for each of them. These lounges allow for unique audio-visual entertainment, plus a golf practice space for him and a health-conscious yoga studio for her. For times when they want to delve into each other’s interests, the control systems are identical for seamless operation.

Another important deliverable was to achieve a modern, clean-looking aesthetic with strong input from the interior designer. However, the team faced some challenges due to size constraints. Together with the designer, the team neatly concealed the main Vantage control hub in a hallway cupboard and stowed the AV equipment into custom-made AV racks and cabinetry that matched the design aesthetic. The integrators also chose silent fans both for proper ventilation and to ensure there were no noise interruptions.

The single interface RTI automation system allows for full control of lights including a ’warm’ scene and ’away’ scene. With highly accurate DALI lux control, the home can transform with feature light fittings, curtain and shade control, and multi-room audio throughout the apartment and deck.

RTI controls all of the lighting, security, audio, and video zones throughout this $5.7m home.

PROJECT Marine Drive

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Bridger Automation Pty Ltd

The integrator for this project has a long history with this particular client who has hired them on four separate occasions. The latest one, a dual level luxury home set along the Coomera River, has all the features fit for a Hollywood movie star or billionaire CEO.

Bridger Automation installed an RTI Automation System to control all the lighting, security, audio and video zones throughout this home including 12 independently controlled AV zones with six video zones and six audioonly zones. Control interfaces include tablet GUI, phone GUI, or handheld RTI remote controls. Regardless of when or what kind of function is taking place, the client has complete control, as requested.

Despite the home’s location in the elite gated community of Sanctuary Cove, the client emphasised the need for security, but wanted it to be executed subtly. Cameras are installed throughout the property inside and out. Security keypads are largely replaced by panic button switches, an app for phone control, remote access, and wireless keyring remotes. A video IP intercom controls access to the front gate and is available for notifications and control from any internet enabled app. All of these systems are tied into Sanctuary Cove’s 24/7 back-tobase alarm system with on-site patrolling guards

After reading through the brief and solutions, the panel of design judges remarked “It’s clear that this was a huge undertaking and collaboration between many skilled stakeholders, resulting in a superb outcome for both the homeowner and the provider.”

The integrator said, “the moods the house can evoke are all part of what made the project rewarding.”

The client did not want TVs to be visible in the home, so the team mounted a custom dropper with the ability to conceal the TV when not in use.

PROJECT The Estate

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Electronic Living

When specifying this architecturally styled home, Electronic Living knew they had to limit the visual impact of the technology — especially considering the amount of crisp white colour on the walls. With the aesthetic in mind, the team installed TV droppers inside the ceilings, white in-ceiling speaker grilles, white CCTV cameras, and white touch panels to camouflage into the home.

Across this expansive estate consisting of the main house, guest house, pool house, gate house, and tennis courts, the team added a total of 22 audio zones (16 internal and 6 external). To ensure the highest quality sound, Electronic Living installed several pairs of high performance Sonance in-ceiling speakers in open living areas to ensure the dispersion and coverage were equal across the zones.

Video distribution is catered for by the Control4 6x6 HDBT video matrix, which distributes 4K video from 4K source. Each video zone also has audio return connected to the audio distribution system, enabling the content to play through the speakers in each video zone.

Although lighting control was proposed to the clients, they chose not to include it in the integration of the home to allocate their budget into the high performance indoor and outdoor audio system, and a home cinema instead. Ultimately, the clients were “very happy” with their decision because entertainment was far higher up on their wish list than lighting control.

The judges called The Estate, “a strong entry with a nice mix of systems and some neat integration touches.”

PROJECT Luxury Lodge

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Liquid Automation

When this project first began in 2017, the client made it clear he wanted to embrace the intricacies of technology and be deeply involved throughout the development of his dream property. The client and Liquid Automation worked so closely that one of senior technicians remained on site almost full time to oversee the project.

The team provided a 4K Crestron NVX AV-over-IP video distribution system to distribute central video sources such as satellite TV, Apple TVs and a Blu-ray player to six video zones. They also added a Crestron Sonnex multi-room audio system to distribute audio to 20 speaker zones. To control it all, the client has the option of 10 Crestron TSW-1060 fixed in-wall touch-panels, six Crestron TSR-310 touchscreen handheld remotes, and an iPad with master control of the entire system.

Liquid Automation says they felt very fortunate that there was ample power to the applicable locations to supply the non-critical loads on the main and den AV racks. They also took extra measurements to ensure the in-rush of those circuits did not come close to the rating of the circuit breakers or the total BTU rating of all equipment. The racks for this project were linked with minimal cabling for overall connectivity to all equipment.

A fully documented, well-designed system was developed and set out on CAD drawings and cable schedules. These drawings go down to component level allowing for an easy upgrade path for any future additions or enhancements to be easily implemented.

A cinema recliner with a smaller footprint had to be sourced to provide more room to walk around the seats on the right side of the room.

PROJECT Master’s Enclave

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR The Digital Picture

Oftentimes, the biggest challenge an integrator faces with a client is in figuring out what exactly they want. That was far from the case with the Master’s Enclave project.

When this client entered The Digital Picture’s showroom and experienced the Dolby ATMOS system for the first time, they were immediately sold. From there, it was all about incorporating the right additions and making adjustments to meet the requirements of their space.

The client, an avid movie watcher and sports fan, wanted “as large a screen as possible” to accompany the highperformance audio. After a few attempts that didn’t quite meet their standards, The Digital Picture worked closely with Lumagen to create a custom aspect 2.10:1 ratio screen. For the projector, the team went with a Sony 870ES for its fast on/off times and its ability to withstand 3-4 hours of use per day without the need to regularly change lamps.

Finally, the system had to be easy to use. To meet the client’s wishes, The Digital Picture used a Control4 system for the AV and lighting across the entirety of the room. They even programmed the lights to turn on automatically upon entry and during intermissions.

The end result is a home cinema room that is both visually and audibly profound. Typically, a room with this performance level would require more sound isolation, explains The Digital Picture. But seeing as the client lives alone in a rural area, they have the luxury of turning the system up whenever they please, with no consequences.

The judges called The Master’s Enclave, “A wellengineered room, with well documented design and verification.”

Together, the Klipsch in-wall speakers and Denon receiver completely transport viewers into what is happening on the 130" Cinemascope screen.

PROJECT The Red Cinema

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Wired By MJD

The clients for this project requested a full-blown cinematic experience, but not just one that would be used on occasion. They wanted to take full advantage of this space daily for TV and other content. The cinema also had to be big enough to comfortably accommodate guests on their own recliners.

To achieve their vision, Wired By MJD worked closely with the architect and the cinema designer who allowed the integrators to take the lead. Together with the client, the teams designed a minimalistic space with clean lines and just the right amount of ‘movie theatre feel’.

One of the first things they mapped out was the seating design. They wanted to give their clients the traditional cinema recliners, without the isolation and restrictions of conventional cinema recliners. To create that perfect balance, a custom designed U-shaped lounge in the upper seating and two custom chase lounges in the front centre allow the clients flexible seating arrangements no matter who uses the cinema.

The complete immersive sound and picture quality the client desired was easily achieved, even considering the room’s small size. Together, the Klipsch in-wall speakers and Denon AV receiver completely transport viewers into what is happening on the 130" Cinemascope screen. For subwoofers, the team chose Sunfire HRS8s to allow the best quality sound that was also in line with the space and budget.

When it came time for calibration, the client did not want to show favouritism to any one seat, but instead wanted the video and acoustics optimised for the entire room. The team also had to ensure the speakers were not too close to the listening positions (for the whole family) and not too easily located, to create an immersive experience for everyone.

Wired by MJD says this versatile cinema room is able to go from “cosy romantic seating, to a relaxed lounging experience, to one filled with lots of guests and party vibes.”

The designer liked the Artnovion Avalon flow panels so much that she carried the theme throughout the room with complementary oak panelling.

PROJECT North Shore Retreat

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Len Wallis Audio

As avid music lovers, the clients’ brief was to create a room that sounded like a dedicated home theatre but didn’t look like a conventional theatre, which is typically dark and somewhat formal. Instead, they wanted the room to be bright and casual. To achieve their vision, Len Wallis Audio worked closely with the interior designer, HVAC team, and even a language translator since the clients did not speak English.

Due to the heritage build of the room, the team was faced with a few technical challenges from the start. They could not move the exterior walls, fireplace, windows, or wall structure. The placement of the screen, projector, and speakers had to be carefully considered to ensure they could be installed in an aesthetically pleasing way while still performing as the high-end audio system the client demanded.

The team mechanically isolated the speakers from the wall with rubber and steel installation brackets and filled the front with acoustic wadding. The visual result for the client was a clean, flat wall with all of the mounting, insulation, and cabling concealed from view.

The room features an Ultralift drop-down which houses the Sony projector. When the system powers down, there is a two-minute delay on the projector lifter moving to its closed position to allow it to fully cool before being stowed into the roof cavity.

During the construction process, the eager clients (and their translator) frequented the jobsite to inquire about the progress. Len Wallis Audio remarked that, by the time the project wrapped up, the clients were so fluent in English that the translator was no longer needed. They team did however ensure all documentation was available in both English and Mandarin.

PROJECT Arbour Boutique Apartments

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Gold Class AV

In traditional hotel and apartment buildings, there is typically a front desk staff member at the ready to handle check in and stay accommodations. For this project though, the building owner wanted a completely automated system that could handle these tasks around the clock. Gold Class AV worked closely with the Arbour Boutique Apartments to build a complete ecosystem for the entire building.

Once a guest books a room, they are given a pin code to access the building and their assigned room. When they enter the room for the first time, they are greeted with an automated ’welcome’ function which turns on the lights and air conditioning/heat and displays a welcome screen on the TV. At the same time, an email notification is sent to the admin team to notify them that the guest has checked in.

When it’s time to check out, as the GPOs, lights, and air conditioning system are integrated into the automation, they become deactivated along with a notification being sent to the cleaning staff notifying them to prepare the room for the next guest. The door code automatically locks resets to a unique code for the next user to ensure their safety.

Each apartment has dedicated WiFi and the ability for clients to connect their personal devices to the Control4 software. It was also important to adhere to the accessibility requirements for people living with disabilities, which means that certain apartments have been designed with automation in mind for guests with specific needs.

Gold Class AV says, “Everywhere you turn in these apartments is a solution to a problem that has been overcome and has turned a guest’s stay into more than a simple visit. Each stay is an experience.”

PROJECT Askari

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Bridger Automation Pty Ltd

The client for this project wanted a big package, but being that it was a yacht, the team had to think creatively to find a solution that met both the space and build requirements. During the beginning phase, the team was faced with COVID restrictions that prevented them from attending the site during the build process. To keep the timeline on track, they devised the plans and schedules remotely and had the equipment drawn up and freighted overseas direct to the site.

Once the yacht arrived in Australia, they finished the install, which included a comprehensive RTI Automation System. With the objectives from the clients, who were no strangers to technology, the Bridger team designed an AV package with 14 zones in total, 10 containing both audio and video, and four with audio only spread over four decks.

The video zones all include a Samsung Frame Smart TV, Origin Acoustics Premium Marine Grade speakers, a local HEOS amplifier, RTI handheld remote and/or wall controllers, and phone/tablet app control. Exceptions to this standard are in the master cabin and main saloon, which have a HEOS soundbar and subwoofer. The crew quarters each have single stereo speakers and standard TVs due to space limitations and to keep it simple.

At handover, the clients were so pleased that they already began talking about doing the same thing for their new 31m/103ft long super yacht. The integrators remarked that, even amid challenges, the process was smooth sailing…pun intended.

PROJECT Shanghai Experience Center

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR Zene Private Theater

When Zene Private Theater set out to build an experience centre, their main goal was to create a unique home entertainment experience that would ultimately make sales easier. They worked closely with interior designers, HVAC experts, acoustical consultants, speaker manufacturers, and home automation specialists to bring the showroom to life in Shanghai, China. They also strictly followed CEDIA/CEA CEB 22/23/24 design standards, Dolby Home Theater installation guidelines, and Chinese low-voltage cabling standards.

Throughout the 800m² showroom are three dedicated rooms for AV experiences, including a media room, grand cinema room, and karaoke room. The media room is small but mighty with seven different modules to improve the work efficiency by 50% compared to traditional fabric track systems. The grand cinema is the largest of the three and accounted for 25% of the entire budget. The room is equipped with studio level sound isolation, double soundproof doors, 188 panels, Dolby Atmos 11.4.6, and an acoustic treatment designed by US architectural design firm, Arithmetic Design. In the karaoke room, Zene Private Theater installed Meyer Sound 4.2 karaoke systems and karaoke lighting to make the singalong experience and unforgettable one.

In total, the showroom took five months to complete with a total build cost of 5.18 million RMB ($US800,000). The showroom, which is approaching its one-year anniversary, targets residential customers with luxury houses, but also serves as an entertainment centre for the integrator’s allied trade partners, friends, and family to enjoy.
