Graytek Graytek took a one-size-fits-all building-wide automation system and customized the integration to meet the client’s needs. (The system that had been pre-installed in this condominium just wasn’t quite up to snuff.) The objective was to deliver a solution that the client could use to entertain guests or allow a variety of business visitors to stay short-term while easily and intuitively navigating the system, even users who may be unfamiliar with this type of home automation. Graytek also provided remote access through a secure VPN (virtual private network) so the client could assist guests staying in the home easily and efficiently, regardless of his location. One of the most important aspects of this entry — in the eyes of both the customer and CEDIA’s judges — is the Crestron controls’ ability to toggle between English and Simplified Chinese. AV, network, HVAC control, security, and many more elements are all a part of this brilliant integration. Some examples: There are eight audio zones. Each bedroom features Totem Tribe on-wall speakers and a dual-eight-inch subwoofer. The kitchen features invisible Sonance speakers hidden in the bulkhead with a dual-eight-inch Totem subwoofer vented out of the kick in the kitchen cabinets. Crestron DM (4K compatible) distributes video to all bedrooms and the media system. TV source selection is available on all remotes, iOS and Android devices, and touch panels. Graytek integrated the building’s intercom and lobby camera into the home’s system and made it functional on the 10-inch touch panel in the main living area. Audio and video is distributed throughout this home.
There’s much more, of course, including automated shading that helps keep the west-facing condo — 60 stories up — comfortable regardless of the time or weather. 7

Integrated Home Level I
PROJECT
Condomaximum TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Land & Sea Entertainment What Land & Sea accomplished here was a 2020 tech makeover for a unique property overlooking a river, golf course, and mountain gorge. For the clients — retiring baby boomers — the bells and whistles of the past are replaced with simplicity and useful functionality. The space here is extremely limited, so Land & Sea got creative: What is the one room in a small home that would be tolerant of some background equipment noise? Maybe a bathroom? Having a licensed general contractor in-house, Land & Sea was able to determine how to reclaim a space that was occupied by a decades-old pantry, wet bar, and funky 1/4 bath. In order to claim that space, the team agreed to demo the wet bar, existing powder room, and increase structural integrity — well beyond the original production build quality. Automated lighting scenes (with effects that change around sunrise and sunset) are critically important to this homeowner, as is his love of nature. Land & Sea used high-tech surveillance cameras to capture wildlife behavior and that has been entertaining all by itself. The client’s “greatest wildlife hits” are popular on the condo’s TV screens. Launching “Scenes” is what makes the clients happiest. Being able to walk in and setup the house with one press is key. The Crestron control system makes it all simple and intuitive.
The Crestron system makes operation a snap.
This project was near and dear because this client was Land & Sea’s first customer back in 1989 and the team set out to honor them by taking the entire project under their wings. Since the team includes an on-staff General Contractor and seasoned builders, Land & Sea took care of all the framing, electrical, low voltage, plumbing, drywall, stonework, and so on. 11

Weekend Escape TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Smartlab A weekend dream on the outskirts of Mexico City, this cozy, modern and luxurious house was built for pure family enjoyment. The owner expected the full comfort of a technologically advanced weekend escape, and that’s exactly what he got. He and his family can rely on smart automation in a simple-to-enjoy environment from their motorcycle room to their wine cellar. Imagine spending your Saturday evening with your loved ones, sitting by the fireplace listening to your favorite music in perfectly controlled lighting ambiances. They can create that with just one click. This integration includes: • • • • • • •
The Control4 system offers terrific ease-of-use.
Eight independent audio zones, using Revel indoor and outdoor speakers; A 7.1 Home Theater system using a Sony AVR, Revel speakers and a Polk in-wall sub; A four-zone video distribution system by Control4, each zone with on-screen navigators and smart remotes; Pakedge networking with indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access points that cover the house and outdoor spaces; A massive automated lighting and shading system that reacts to time-of-day; Automatic fireplace shutoff, and; Eight Nest thermostats handling automated climate control.
The homeowners have a menu of scenes that they can trigger using the Control4 system. For example, “Fireplace night” executes a scene that involves turning on the fireplace, dimming the lights and setting the music. The “I’ll be there soon” scene prepares the house for its guests, opening the blinds, adjusting the HVAC to a comfortable level, and setting the mood with lighting adjustments and by playing their favorite tunes. 15

This project was a system upgrade, and now all of its components work together seamlessly.
PROJECT
On the Rocks TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Graytek This home was a partial renovation — both in construction and technology. The clients had high expectations to integrate existing systems in parts of the home, introduce new and upgraded components in other parts of the home, and have it all work together seamlessly. Many of the system upgrades had to be retrofitted as the entire home was not renovated. There were control and lighting systems already in place, but some components were as much as 15 years old, and a refresh was clearly needed. Graytek was asked to update audio and video throughout the home, and fully integrate all of the home’s subsystems — including HVAC and surveillance — while maintaining a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Crestron filled the bill here, and Graytek included updates to all the keypads and the lighting in the wine room. The firm upgraded speakers in key areas with Totem acoustics, and added a Sonos surround system to the family room nook with a Creston remote. Theater upgrades included a new 4K JVC projector and new, hidden Totem speakers. There’s a new media rig in the master bedroom as well, including an upgraded projector and screen. The clients have two additional homes and wanted to have the ability to view all three homes’ security cameras from their touch panels. It required a bit of maneuvering to ensure all of the networks were set up correctly in all three homes so the family can log into all of the cameras and provide the access the homeowners required. The media room and wine cellar received an upgrade here, too.
CEDIA’s judges love the user controls here — especially the pads that feature the home’s floor plans. 19

PROJECT
Casa A TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Smartlab The Smartlab team addressed a specific need with this project — automation helps this family properly observe Shabbat and all the Jewish holidays. Using Control4 systems, those functions involve turning lights on and off at precise times during the day and night. The SubZero refrigerator was integrated as well so that its internal light won’t turn on during those times. Lighting scenes execute automatically and shades open and close automatically based on schedules and times. The more secular features include: Four Independent audio zones with streaming services using Control4´s audio distribution products and a 5.1 in-ceiling home theater system with a Sony 4K projector and an electric screen that completely hides in the ceiling. Lighting is controlled by Control4’s wireless lighting system, controlling 65 lighting “loads” (devices on a circuit) and multiple controlled outlets via 29 wireless keypads and six 10-inch in-wall touch screens.
There’s a screen in the media room that hides in the ceiling when not in use.
Security is addressed here, too, with a CCTV system designed with six Lilin cameras and a recording device. Additionally, a digital door lock by YALE provides keyless access for the family. Door sensors were installed at every terrace and balcony doors trigger alarms whenever they are opened without adult supervision. The Pakedge network was created using access points, routers, and switches and remote monitoring by BakPak. The six touch screens installed throughout the house create an audio and video intercom system that the family can use for internal use and remote communication. Voice control was integrated through Alexa Echo Dots. 23

PROJECT
Allergic to Technology TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Smartlab The owner of this house in Mexico City claimed to be “allergic to technology,” so simplicity and reliability were the keys to this integration, which relies on a Control4 solution. For security Smartlab used Control4 door station keypads to unlock doors at the main entrance and garage. A Spyclops CCTV system was integrated into the Control4 security system. Audio is distributed through eight zones, indoor and outdoor, using Control4’s audio distribution systems, which allow the users to listen to different sources in different rooms simultaneously. Two 5.1 home theaters were installed, and those systems include Denon receivers and Revel speakers with Polk Audio subwoofers. Pakedge was the choice for networking, and four wireless access points were installed to give great coverage. Pakedge’s BakPak system helps monitor and troubleshoot the system remotely. Some of the home’s tech is completely automated. For example, when the intercom door station is activated, its video feed appears in the touchscreens and a custom ring sounds in the kitchen. Lighting scenes execute and shades open and close automatically based on schedules and times.
Audio is distributed throughout eight zones of this house.
Elsewhere, one-touch controls do the work: In the master bedroom’s entrance a button turns off all the lights in the common areas, closes all the blinds and turns on the audio and TV. In the family room, a single button sets the scene for movie night, turning the home theater on, dimming the lights, and closing the shades. 27

PROJECT
The Starship TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
La Scala Here’s a sample of what the CEDIA judges had to say about this project: “One of the best entries in this year’s competition. Such a nice project. Innovative. Lot of amazing lighting. Love that staircase.” From the electro-chromatic tintable glass to the custom lighting solutions that accentuate the incredible architecture, this job required hours and hours of research and planning to make the home perfect. That attention to detail is one of the reasons that La Scala also picked up a trophy for Best Lighting for this home. La Scala spent many hours of offsite planning with the electrician on this project to ensure that the look and feel of the lighting was completely consistent across this elegant integration. Everything here is brilliantly, strategically placed: From a design perspective the objective was to keep the interior color palette quiet, which meant minimalizing variations between materials, technologies, and finishes. Paint matching all blind box covers, spraying speaker grilles (twice) and selecting matte finish cover plates for wall controls created a visually seamless continuation between rooms. The objective was to give the space an appearance that there were no controls at all. Those “invisible” controls ensure maximum security, including activating the aforementioned auto-tinting glass and triggering cameras if an intruder is near. Climate control is completely automated here as well. CEDIA’s judges called this project, “One of the best entries in this year’s competition.”
Add AV, networking, shading, vehicle detection, name it — this is a complete home integration that punches well above its weight class, especially given the budget La Scala was handed. 31

Union Place This home, complete with sauna, yoga room, golf simulator, and an incredible array of entertainment and networking solutions, was this client’s third project with Union Place. The homeowner wanted all the tech to be hidden and controlled by an interface that can be personalized by the user. He also wanted the ability to utilize fiber and 10Gb bandwidth for max video performance. Voice control — specifically, Alexa — is integrated with Savant systems, meaning any programmed scene can be called up from anywhere in the home. Union Place used a combination of flat panel TVs, Samsung Frames, and projection systems to keep the design aesthetic a priority. Each zone is configured with Alexa for light control and voice cues for audio playback. Alexa will override the music stream or other audio to provide an answer to a question, deliver news, weather, and so on at request. All rooms can also communicate via the voice intercom feature. Most public zones use invisible speakers. The media room features a custom soundbar and subwoofer hidden behind a matching HVAC vent. The landscape audio system powers the yard and can be mirrored with the in-pool underwater speaker.
Voice control blends the best of Savant with the best of Alexa.
Beyond clever programming, Union Place also got creative with available space. Without a dedicated room, the team made space for equipment racks beneath a staircase. CEDIA’s judges put it simply: “This is a lovely project.” 35

The high-end solutions here — inside and out — — — turned this home into a true luxury resort.
PROJECT
Suncoast Waterfront Retreat TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Wicked Smart Homes As the name implies, this is a vacation home — and since guests are as likely to use the technology as the homeowners themselves, user controls had to be completely intuitive. Savant controls did the trick. A Lutron QS lighting control system handles all exterior sunset and sunrise lighting scenes and Lutron ultra-quiet motorized roller shades follow the sun throughout the day. Intelligent Visualint cameras maintain a secure perimeter around the home with smart analytics that can keep an eye on the property and alert the homeowner of any potential threats. Camera alerts turn on exterior lighting in their zones automatically (if lights aren’t already on). In the event of a nighttime security alarm, interior lighting comes on and exterior lighting will alert first responders as well as surrounding neighbors of the potential emergency. Interior temperature alerts go out when the HVAC system detects temperatures outside of the programmed range and shades are programmed to lower automatically to offset the ambient heat coming into the home.
Lighting and shading are completely automated.
There are scenes which can be activated at the touch of a button, as well — for example, triggering a TV lift raises a display and tunes the set immediately to a favorite channel. Speaking of televisions, this home boasts all-weather Seura TVs that are mounted on custom columns to give each display the illusion that it’s floating in space. Care was taken with the outdoor audio, too: Speakers are anchored in cement buried beneath the ground to stay in place in the event of hurricane-force winds or heavy flooding that could occur on the coast. CEDIA’s judges took special note of the excellent outdoor integration solutions here, saying that the home “feels like a resort.” 39

PROJECT
Modern Farm House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Futurian Systems Futurian had a clear directive from the client: all the technology had to be cutting-edge and seamlessly blended with each space. The owners wanted top-quality audio, video, networking, lighting control, climate control, and a variety of other automation features implemented in each space. Hundreds of hours were spent engineering a system in which all such features were provided. Networking was especially important, since the clients often work at home. Stereo and surround-sound audio was set up throughout the home. Outdoor audio consists of top-of-the-line Paradigm speakers designed for the demanding environment of the Texas heat and humidity. The latest Sony flat-panel displays were installed and integrated to achieve video distribution from a centrally located equipment rack containing all sources. Networking equipment manufactured by Araknis delivers a robust infrastructure for the fastest possible network speeds on both the wired and wireless side. Multiple wireless access points were strategically installed throughout the home to give the owners the best possible coverage. Security on the property needed to be tight. Not only does a fully integrated Elk security system monitor every opening window and door, but multiple Luma cameras keep a close eye on happenings around the premises.
The home network needed to be top-notch for times this home doubles as the clients’ office.
The owners wanted to maintain their privacy, but also allow natural light to enter various spaces within the home. Many of the windows were hard-wired to accommodate dual-roller shades from QMotion which delivered both variations. Control 4 lighting devices are installed throughout the home. Forty-eight different lighting scenes exist, all of which are automated for various times, days, seasons, special holidays, and more. A variety of other automated and one-button-initiated functions round out this terrific integration. 43

Lakeridge TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Land & Sea Entertainment There’s a critical component in this integration that the client rarely sees — but it’s a priority for Land & Sea: Power management and protection. It’s something the judges took careful note of when awarding this project top honors. This site is located in a volatile weather location and when storms roll in, power is put to the test. In the winter, even static electricity can create issues. Balanced power, UPS backup, surge protection, and remote power monitoring are the best lines of defense. All 4K video distribution feeds content to 22 displays paired with 32 zones of house-wide flexible audio distribution. In addition to nearly every area featuring foreground quality sound, there are three Dolby Atmos Theaters in the residence, each more immersive than the last. The relatively new Crestron Home system that runs everything was “life-tested” in the home of Land & Sea’s leader, Terry Morton. When the platform reached a level of maturity that could handle this scale of house, the clients agreed to become part of the revolution as early adopters. With constant Crestron Home improvements, this residence will continue to evolve. Any new function is instantly and accurately sent out to all control devices in the ecosystem, from iPhones to Touchscreens. There’s a broad array of solutions integrated into this beautiful home, from security to irrigation to rock-solid networking. Nearly everything that can be integrated … is. The attention to detail here is something — for example, the home is surrounded by storm grade acoustic cell shutters outside of inert gas-filled windows. They’re not only great for containing late-night sound volumes — the local fire department credited the shutters for saving this home after a recent wildfire. The Master features an 8K Display and 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos Sound.

Waterfront Residence TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
All Digital, LLC The watchword here: invisibility. The client and designers were very adamant about not wanting to see any in-ceiling speakers or devices that could interfere with their unique design. There are two elements that needed to command all the visual attention in this home: the clean lines of the interior, and, more importantly, the views from every window. For the audio subsystem, Amina invisible speakers were installed throughout the home to give a completely invisible experience with outstanding sound performance. There are 16 audio and surround-sound zones. In addition, Triad low-aperture subwoofers were used to match the size of the Lutron FinirĂŠ lights that were also installed in the house. A Control4 panelized lighting system was installed with configurable keypads to minimize wall clutter. Lighting keypads also incorporate shades and media scenes. For lighting fixtures, Lutron FinirĂŠ Prime recessed lights were used throughout the house. In order to blend in with the modern design of the house, all shades were installed inside pockets (custom flaps and hangers were used as well). A combination of Lutron drapery tracks and motorized shades are seamlessly integrated with Control4 using a Lutron HomeWorks processor.
A combination of Lutron drapery tracks and motorized shades are seamlessly integrated with Control4 using a Lutron HomeWorks processor.
As for the rest of the home, a project of this scale demands attention to every detail, from exterior lighting to streaming music into the master closet. Extensive collaboration and coordination with the electricians, interior designers, lighting designers, closet consultants, cabinetry installers, shade fabricators, landscape professionals, and HVAC was necessary to make this project a success. 51

PROJECT
Modern Beach Brilliance TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Atlantic Control Technologies This new construction home was designed by renowned architect Robert Gurney. His award-winning, modern designs are distinctive, progressive, and above all, aesthetically brilliant. For both architect and client, aesthetics were a primary motivating factor in virtually all decisions made for the home. The technology in the home needed to be fun and functional, rugged enough to stand up to extreme seaside climates and adhere to the strict aesthetic demands of the architect. One example: the precisely engineered TV mounts. Chosen for their dexterity, shocking ease of manipulation and brushed aluminum finishes, they are modern, almost industrial looking, and have industry-leading functionality. On the rooftop deck, there also sits a colossal 85-inch outdoor TV. These beautifully designed televisions are not only extremely high-performing devices in outdoor conditions, but have features like chrome finishes to make them striking to look at even when turned off. Lighting and automated window shades provide a simple and smart way to control the light exposure pouring in from the floorto-ceiling windows that offer panoramic beach views throughout the home.
Everything in this home, including the TV mounts, is precisely engineered.
There’s a lot of automation at work here, too. At the pool, there’s automated lighting and cover capability as well as audio speakers installed underwater. As far as the home’s network is concerned, as devices roam around the home, they are seamlessly passed to different access points depending on location and signal strength. 55

The Best of Everything TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
AudioVisions This luxurious home has a tech integration worthy of its pedigree. This beautiful house is two stories above ground plus a basement for the garage, lounge, and exercise areas. The entire 16,450-square-foot home with six bedrooms and ten baths will set you back a meager $39,950,000. It includes Ketra Lighting, Lutron Lighting Controls, and a Delos Darwin healthy living system. One of the main focuses was the healthy living aspect of the home and how technology could help make that happen. Clean water, clean air, and balanced human-centric lighting were used to create an oasis of healthy living. Delos provided monitoring devices that were ultimately controlled by the Crestron automation system. Darwin automatically detects air quality changes and turns on the Mitsubishi HVAC system as necessary and the Ketra lights adjust automatically throughout the day to reflect the color temperature outside. It’s just one of the many automated features in this showplace. Even “standard” systems like video were supersized with two wall installations in both the basement bar and living room. But perhaps the most compelling installation in the entire home is the custom projection video wall incorporating three 4K projectors. Pretty nice for a garage, right? Another stunning feature: The secret cinema with an entry hidden behind a bookcase. That theater, with its Barco projector and 206inch Seymour screen sounds as good as it looks: The cinema was custom calibrated by Paul Hales, the founder of ProAudio, who took the sound of the room to “the next level.” Even the garage is elegant and dramatic.
This home also won the “Technology Meets Design” and “Life Lived Best at Home” awards from CEDIA. 63

PROJECT
Fox Point TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Admit One Home Systems Top-priority client requests often involve hiding tech or making the controls completely intuitive. While Admit One did accomplish those asks in this home, the number one requirement here was solving the acoustical challenges the homeowners had grown used to in other properties. Their previous home echoed terribly, they could hear the theater from the other side of the residence, and Mom and Dad complained that they could constantly hear the kids playing in the lower level. After adding insulation between floors, Admit One installed Sienna Artnovion Acoustic panels in large, active spaces that reflect sound. Once acoustics had been addressed, Admit One integrated 13 video zones, 32 audio zones, 275 lighting loads, and four fan locations. There is a combination of 75 window treatments in the house that include motorized rollers, romans, and drapery tracks. There are 71 Horizon keypads with locations to control the lights and shades, in addition to iPads and iPhones as additional control points. Powerful, reliable networking is important here, since Dad’s communications need to be secure when he’s working from home. Additionally, water sensor locations keep an eye on mechanical devices and areas that might have water leakage around the property. Heat, smoke, and carbon monoxide sensors abound, and security cameras and alarms cover the grounds and structure. Automation is controlled by Crestron. This project includes 13 video zones and 32 audio zones.
Lastly, Dad and his sons bond over music — they’re audiophiles. They requested easy access to their extensive music collection as well as a turntable for a dedicated listening area. 67

Luxury Penthouse TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Cantara This is a home that is truly imbued with the personality of its owner — it fully delivers on the client’s expectations of technology that is designed and delivered at the same rarified level as the finishes in the home, and the teams of people that created them. To provide an insight into everyday lifestyle of the house, the client has settled on pressing not the “good morning” lighting scene each morning, but instead, she presses the “entertain” button. This penthouse was imagined from the beginning to be the ultimate expression of the client’s desire to have glamorous cocktail parties with live music and DJs, host the best-ever Oscars red carpet party, and to have a closet anyone in the world would envy. To accomplish all of that, Cantara had to craft each solution with care. The dining room is a terrific example: The floors are stone, one wall is glass, and music is pumped in constantly through eight speakers and four subwoofers. Despite all those sound-reflecting surfaces, the ceiling is designed so that people at either table can clearly hear only the guests at that table without a cacophony of other voices and notes.
What’s an Oscars viewing party without multiple screens and projectors?
The twin-projector-and-drop-down-screens solution at work here won two top CEDIA Awards on its own, one for Best Media Room, Level II, and another for Best Innovative Solution. It makes for easy viewing for guests during that aforementioned Oscars party, and includes a wireless microphone rig so that an emcee can address the partygoers. The tech here combines with the space to create luxury at its finest. 71

PROJECT
East Meets West TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Harrison Home Systems Inc. This Rocky Mountain residence is a second home inspired by Japanese architecture and design. The primary design objective for the integrated technology system was ease-of-use and convenient control from anywhere. The clients wanted a home with all the bells and whistles of a permanent home but wanted to be able to easily manage it remotely as their second home while still living and running an international business in their primary residence. In addition to remote control and monitoring from out of state, keeping the aesthetic was key, which meant camouflaging the speakers for all 18 zones of audio and coming up with clever solutions for the 13 separate video viewing areas. Accomplishing the latter includes: •
A drop-down 4K UHD 65-inch Sony display in the master bedroom. When the lift is closed, it blends in seamlessly with the highly-designed ceiling cloud so it is completely discreet when not in use.
•
Dual 4K Ultra HD 82-inch Samsung LED displays mounted side-by-side in the great room with custom-made James Loudspeaker soundbars.
•
A mirrored television in the master bathroom, specifically a 32-inch Sony LED television in a floating vanity behind a custom-made glass. The backbox was designed especially for the vanity — it’s a completely custom installation.
There’s a dedicated home cinema in this residence, and no less than 110 motorized Lutron Sivoia Roller Shades that manage the home’s sunlight and temperature without a user having to manually operate their window coverings.
The home features 18 zones of audio and 13 separate video viewing areas.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful elements of the home is its lighting design. Distinctive lighting elements include beautiful backlit crystal stone in multiple rooms, rope lighting lining the floor trim of the giant spiral staircase, beautiful chandeliers throughout, and a star-like ceiling that shines over the dining room. 75

La Scala This theater had already been roughed in when La Scala came aboard, but it wasn’t designed properly — and more importantly, it had no consideration for room treatments to address sound absorption or reflection. The client wanted something unique, and needed enough amplification to really fill the space with sound and images. CEDIA’s judges were knocked out by what the winning firm achieved here for the budget. The ceiling was a large surface that needed to be treated, and the client wanted fiber-optic effects. Custom-painted speakers blend perfectly into the nicely painted ceiling. The client wanted this room loud. The room is over 800 square feet, so La Scala decided on a 9.4.4 immersive sound system with a ton of power. In order to achieve the sound pressure level desired the team elected to use the larger Sonance R2 series for the nine primary and surround speakers. Reference subwoofers, processing by Marantz, and Sonance high-powered amps deliver the goods. This room delivers a true 4K experience with a 4K Laser projector creating its amazing image on a 16-foot 2:35 acoustically transparent screen. La Scala wanted to go a little further, so each family member’s own constellation of stars was embedded in the huge 350-squarefoot starlight ceiling — a surprise from the team.
At the entrance, you’re greeted by an on-wall candy machine which always includes your favorite movie snacks.

Everything for Everyone TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Thoughtful Integrations This is definitely the place to be for a family that’s stuck at home. Whether this room’s used for sports, movies, gaming, music, or any other entertainment use, everything was built to exceed expectations. Having an in-depth partnership with all manufacturers and following CEDIA standards were keys to building a home cinema that delivered a better experience than a commercial cinema. Performance of this room was based on “at above” standards set by manufacturers Rayva, Anthem, Triad, Sony, Kaleidescape, Control4, Screen Innovations, Dolby, and ISF. Teaming up with Rayva for the acoustic treatment of the room was a key to gaining proper acoustics in an acoustically challenged room. Closely following CEDIA white papers, best practices, and manufacturer guidelines and suggestions allowed this theater to be a strong example of the total shared knowledge of the CEDIA community with an insight to the excellence of knowledge cooperation. If a movie’s the choice, a 4K Sony projector lights up the Screen Innovations display, and the Jaymar DBox seats sync their movements to the action onscreen to create an immersive environment where the viewer feels like they are in the middle of the movie. For sports, while the sights and sounds are amazing, the ability to change the lights right from the Control4 touchscreen to the colors of the owners’ favorite team was key. Whether for sports, movies, gaming, music, or any other entertainment use, everything was built to exceed expectations.
Gaming in this room is next level through the intelligent use of the 4K Xbox One and when it comes to music, the room can easily become a “concert hall at home.” 83

PROJECT
KA Theater TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Audio Images Audio Images worked with Anthony Grimani’s PMI (Performance Media Industries) to create this masterful cinema, and CEDIA’s judges were impressed, noting the thorough work from everyone involved. The judges’ comments include these notes: “This is exceptional work — this is a great example of a reference-grade theater — documentation and racks are first rate — power management is superb — I’ll take it!” As the judges tallied their scores for this project, they noted that many of them had given this room perfect or near-perfect marks, hence the Global win in addition to a trophy for Best Home Cinema Level III (Americas). One challenge: There’s a hidden bankvault door here. The motors for that door got in the way of perfect speaker placement for a proper 11.4.4 immersive audio experience, since the left front of the room is unavailable for hiding speakers. The PMI team was up to the challenge — Grimani, after all, is a sound pioneer, having developed the Surround EX 6.1 format that first appeared in the Star Wars films. A Barco 4K projector and a 138-inch screen round out this beauty. The shape of the room was odd for a cinema — it’s a bit too long, so the team added a false wall at the front of the cinema. Another issue that came with this remodeling job was an HVAC system that needed an upgrade, as did the sound isolation solutions. The challenges were met, and this room can get downright loud. With that in mind, the client is very happy: The performance in this room is amazing in stereo and in multichannel, with startling bass — and high sound pressure capability. … that slides back to reveal a bank vault.
Audio Images also picked up the Best Dressed Racks (Americas) prize for their work here. 87

THE FILMMAKER’S CHOICE “Kaleidescape is an essential part of my life and has been since 2007. It’s allowed me to curate a great library of films over the years, to cross-reference titles and follow my own threads—in other words, to have a treasury of cinematic history at my fingertips. And these days, when movies are routinely devalued and streamed in forms that are often compromised, I’ve come to value Kaleidescape more than ever. From the presentation of uncompressed 4K to the meticulous attention to every aspect of the film as the director intended it, Kaleidescape is grounded in a true and deep love for the art of cinema. Frankly, I don’t know what I’d do without it.”

Audio Images In the annual CEDIA Awards, “Highly Commended” honors mean that a project was very close to achieving a top prize in its category. The judges were impressed by the attention to detail and audio performance that this room can deliver. The sound system is an 11.4.6 immersive audio package carefully laid out to exacting industry standards. It is capable of cinematic reference sound pressure levels. (In layman’s terms, it can get as loud as the director would’ve wanted, while maintaining absolute clarity.) In addition to the standard seven main channels, there are six ceiling speakers for immersive top outputs and two speakers for the all-important “wide” channels. Four custom cabinets, each with two of the shallow (but mighty) JL Audio subwoofers are installed close to the four corners of the room, with two high up front and two low in the back. They belt out deep and powerful bass. The system was created and tuned with the assistance of PMI’s Anthony Grimani, who has extensive experience creating audio magic for Hollywood blockbusters. The video system is comprised of an acoustically transparent 175-inch wide screen, 2.37:1 ratio, along with a Barco Balder Cinemascope 4K projector.

Union Place The client here wanted a budget-minded upgrade of an existing system, changing the aesthetics and performance while keeping some of the core functionality. Union Place added an 85-inch Sony TV with a video tile feature to allow the client to watch multiple sporting events at once. The team kept the original Epson projector for viewing larger images, but reconfigured the gear. Union Place also added Control4 lighting control and voice automation to round out the project. The goal: Update the original component distribution system and replace the controls. The AV Pro 8x8 HDMI and MultiViewer solution was configured to allow the client to distribute content to all the video locations, including his 135-inch outdoor rear projection system. Two stealth monitors and an Oculus Rift system were also incorporated into the design. A 65-inch mirror TV is embedded behind the bar area as the main viewing display. The Oculus Rift is original, and it was asked that the sensors and PC be hidden in the cabinet. The Samsung Frame TV can display a variety of content sources — including the Oculus video. Additionally, the designer wanted a slab panel door that still allowed sub placement, so fabric wrapped around four panels was used to hide that speaker.

Cantara The challenge is right there in the name. The client wanted to present her guests with the best Oscars red carpet viewing party ever, and she wanted two huge screens to do the work. The performance objectives for this design were simply to create something incredible, possibly ridiculous, meant for parties and television events. The dichotomy of performance vs. room aesthetics presented many challenges to address. While doing as much as was possible to maintain proper viewing angles and distances, the other issues in this space became readily apparent. The sound, somehow, needed to match the scale of the video system in boldness, yet not be seen, or interfere at all with the interior finishes, decorative elements or furniture. It had to be effortless to control, too — so that one could watch two independent sources, but only hear one — and then instantly merge both systems into a single audio and video experience. Careful audio calibration was a must, given the hard, Art Deco surfaces, walls of glass, and furnishings. The video had its own challenges — while the client wanted the biggest screens possible, the image would be absolutely blinding at these distances without careful adjustments that still preserved excellent pictures. Cantara pulled off the installation of dual drop-down Barco projectors, screens, hidden speakers, and even a DJ-input wireless mic-andmusic rig that had to integrate perfectly with all the other sound systems in this luxury LA apartment.
Walls of glass can make for tough audio calibration in a space like this one.
CEDIA’s judges were taken with this project, also awarding it the 2020 CEDIA Award for Innovative Solution. Cantara’s work on the rest of this home earned CEDIA’s Highly Commended honors for Best Integrated Home, Level IV.

Media Room Level II
PROJECT
The Great Room TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Land & Sea Entertainment This media room was “retrofit,” 20 years after the clients watched the very first HDTV broadcast. This time they wanted as much sound and picture as possible in this large space. Due to the fact the room was already built, Land & Sea’s off-the-shelf speaker selections that would fit the performance stipulations — and the room — were limited to … none. Enter Mike Park and Mark Schafle with James Loudspeakers. After a factory field trip, and many revisions, the team finally landed on a 100% custom speaker package: a high-output Dolby Atmos 10.4.8 arrangement. They then proceeded to re-build the room around it, beginning with 21-inch subwoofers. The clients assembled a lineup of master woodworkers and other specialists to converge on the project. It was a proud and collective team effort from the clients on down that no participant will soon forget. For fully immersive sound, JBL-Trinnov-Crown electronics were chosen for their unbridled multi-channel processing and high power on-demand. For epic video they selected a Pro Sony 4K Laser projector bright enough to deliver an exceptional image to a 170-inch screen, but also able to auto-align to the 110-inch Stewart screen 30 inches behind it. The decision to incorporate both screens was to have the window shades open to enjoy the outdoors, while still watching the smaller projection screen.
A smaller screen below the massive top display shows the waterfall view behind the glass.
The room’s built for flexibility and reconfigured for every type of event. While there’s no permanent seating plan, the “Director’s Sofa” was calibrated (as the “best seats in the house” for audio and video) Three flanking 55-inch 4K Sony screens allow for unlimited content and any display in the home can select any of 14 4K video sources. 103

PROJECT
Smart Homes for All TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Smartlab There’s a unique set of skills that an integrator needs to bring to a Multiple Dwelling Unit project: The firm has to understand how to create a repeatable, baseline technology infrastructure that can be customized to individual needs. To do this, the integrator needs to be a bit predictive: What will every resident likely need — and where? The power of home automation is included in all 164 units of this luxurious residential development in Mexico City using Control4 solutions. The developer wanted to create the best product for the Mexican housing market. That involved top-of-the-line finishes, services and the Control4 Home Automation systems that gives their sales team the edge when selling these properties. All common areas were completely automated: Lobbies, business centers, fitness centers, kids’ playrooms, and outdoor spaces. Smartlab integrated audio, video, CCTV, HVAC, intercom systems, and lighting. Additionally, all 164 units are equipped with a basic Control4 system that can be later upgraded and expanded to integrate all of the customers’ home technology needs. The system includes a controller, router, and remote control that can run a home theater and later additional gadgets and solutions such as lighting control, distributed audio and video, CCTV, and so on, plus a seven-inch touch screen that can communicate with the concierge. Or, as Smartlab calls it, tech paradise. Control4 systems are at the heart of each of the 164 apartments in this building.
In awarding Smartlab top honors for this sprawling project, CEDIA’s judges noted the excellent wire management here. 107

PROJECT
Cinegration Arvada Experience Center TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Cinegration Cinegration’s Arvada Experience Center drew a LOT of praise from CEDIA’s judging panel. They called it “stunning,” “the perfect example of a true custom integration experience center,” and “just a great presentation.” This Control4-driven space gives one an immediate, intuitive experience — it’s really set up like a high-tech home, not a retail store. “Experience Plaques” denote the various solutions that are highlighted. To the left of the entrance is the front hallway, with the experience plaque, “Complete Lighting.” The purpose of this area is to inspire the prospect to begin mentally painting their home with light. To the right of the entrance and facing parallel to the cafe is the area called “Disguise and Hide.” This experience is based around extending the illusion of a 55-inch Samsung Frame TV in art mode. Full range audio is reproduced with Sonance Invisible Series speakers and subwoofers. The largest zone of the experience center is typically referred to as the “Family Room,” however, the accompanying experience plaque reads “Immersive Entertainment.” This room represents a living-area entertainment system, and the technology from dedicated theaters that can be used to improve experiences in great rooms, rec rooms, and common areas. Along the wing-wall of the cafe is an experience plaque called ‘”The Power of Control,” and is mounted next to a Control4 touch screen. The experience plaque reads: “One Interface is all you need to access your entire smart home system” — and then the technology proves the point. The showroom is long on tech that doesn’t look like tech — that’s Samsung’s “Frame” TV in “art mode.”
Cinegration worked hand-in-hand with manufacturers to create this 1,400-square-foot center — for example, Fortress Seating built the sectional sofa to their specs. 111

PROJECT
Echo Systems Experience Center TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Echo Systems The mission statement here is clear: Echo Systems endeavored to create a truly unique facility in order to dynamically change the client experience. From the dedicated home cinema to the fully appointed kitchen, the Echo team was determined to create a showroom that mirrored the high-end homes they often integrate. The experience center — a four-year-project, all in — is worth well over seven figures, and has shown immediate results now that it’s completely finished. As Echo Systems works in the area’s finest properties, the firm sought to emulate the fit and finish, down to the last detail, that Echo’s clients have come to expect in their own homes. There’s an endeavor to incorporate the latest in aesthetically integrated technology in this type of setting, in order to show what is possible when potential clients select the right partner. On a roughly 45-minute guided tour of the facility, clients are provided a 10,000-foot view of where technology is currently, while at the same time serving to dismantle many clients’ preconceived notions of what can be achieved. The goal is to show them exactly what kind of results a technology provider can do if that firm takes the same careful approach as their architect or designer.
The Center includes a dedicated home cinema.
CEDIA’s judges were duly impressed with what the integrator accomplished here. Their thoughts: “This is a real lifestyle center.” “So much diversity in textures, treatments, and most importantly, tech.” “I could live here!” Echo System’s home-withina-commercial space helps clients slow down, relax, explore, and really see what’s possible in the universe of residential technology. 115

QAV Showroom TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR
Quality Audio Video Quality Audio Video wanted to build something so unique that a client in another state could easily justify flying out to meet with QAV. The firm purchased three adjoining condos, and blew out everything to the four walls, floor, and ceiling, providing a blank canvas. At the heart of the showroom is a custom kitchen featuring a complete range of Sub-Zero Wolf appliances, including an integrated refrigerator, freezer, beverage drawers, and dual-zone wine storage with a cherrywood cigar humidor. The living room is located adjacent to the kitchen and was designed to be a living space theater. There’s an 85-inch Sony XBR TV with a custom Leon soundbar to show the importance of design aesthetics. The entryway lounge features a Leon Sound Sculpture. QAV approached Noah Kaplan of Leon in 2015 and told him the team wanted something that will be the ultimate expression of the firms’ commitment to the design-build community to blend audio with the arts. Quality Audio Video supports that commitment in every room throughout the entire showroom from start to finish. A dedicated home cinema rounds out this showroom that CEDIA’s judges called “marvelous.”
