By Wendy Wighton Urquhart os Angeles rolled out the red carpet at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood for the premiere of “Murder Mystery” which stars Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler and their fans turned up in droves. Jennifer wowed photographers and fans alike in a belted, sleeveless lambskin dress by Celine and her black and silver studded heels added just the right amount of sass. Her 52 year old co-star, Adam Sandler, opted for a much more casual look, teaming brown corduroy trousers with a navy polo shirt and an orange, white and blue jacket. Nick promised to take Audrey on vacation to Europe but it’s never happeThe two stars have been firm pals sin- ned and when she finally confronts ce the early 1990’s when she was da- him on their 15th wedding anniverting Sandler’s friend and they met for sary, he tells her he’s already arrange breakfast at Jerry’s Deli in West Ho- the trip is all arranged as a surprise llywood, long before Jennifer became anniversary present. an A-lister. This is the second film Adam and Jennifer have done together, they last starred in the hit romantic comedy “Just Go With It” in 2011. “Murder Mystery”, is a classic whodunit with plenty of comedy thrown in. Audrey Spitz (Jennifer Aniston) is a hairdresser who’s loves murder mystery books and her husband Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) who’s told his wife he’s a detective when in reality he’s failed the exams and is still walking the beat. On their wedding day, CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 116 | 4
On their transatlantic flight to Italy, Nick’s snoring stops Audrey from sleeping so she sneaks into 1st class to steal some earplugs because she doesn’t want to pay the air hostess $9 for a pair, but when she gets there she discovers a bar and a handsome passenger by the name of Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans) who’s on his way to the Monaco Grand Prix. He stops the air hostess from throwing Audrey out of the first class lounge and invites her and her husband to spend their vacation on his yacht. But there’s a lot more going on; for
starters, Charles’ ex fiancé, Suzy Nakamura, (Shioli Kutsuna) was stolen away by his billionaire uncle, Malcom Quince (Terence Stamp) who owns the yacht and is now married to Suzy and Colonel Ulenga (John Kani) became part of Quince’s inner circle after he saved the billionaire’s life during a bomb attack many years ago. When Malcolm Quince arrives on the yacht he tells his friends and family that he’s cutting them all off financially and leaving everything he owns to his new wife, Suzy, but just as he’s about to sign his new will, the lights go out and when they finally come back on Malcom Quince has been murdered. The plot thickens when his son Toby is also found dead. Nick steps into detective mode, informs Interpol about the murders and Inspector La Croix (Dani Boon) is sent to the yacht investigate the case. The rest of the guests tell the Inspector that they believe Audrey and Nick killed Malcolm Quince and his son Toby so the New Yorkers are ordered to stay in a hotel room in Monte Carlo until the case is solved. Malcolm Quince’s bodyguard, Sergei, (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) slips a note under their door saying he knows who killed the victims but then he gets shot while he’s with them and that’s when Audrey and Nick realise they’re about to be framed for three murders, so they go on the run. But Audrey storms off after a row

EAST MEETS NORTHWEST
Derek Martin By Larrick Ebanks
“
If their paying, I’m playing”, words spoken by a true East Ender and someone who happened to be at school with the Krays - but that’s another story. I popped down to the Bamboo Beach bar to catch up with TV actor, Derek Martin, known mainly for his role as Charlie Slater in the hit TV programme, Eastenders. After ordering a pint and a soft one for Derek who doesn’t drink or smoke I asked, if you don’t
drink and you don’t smoke, what do you do then Derek? lol, “I love to visit Mallorca three or four times a year and stay at my home in Peguera and hang out with my sons when I’m in-between work”
sign and within days was talking to acting agents. His first major role was appearing in the 70’s TV series ‘Z Cars’ as an extra, which was a catalyst for his lead role in ‘Law And Order’ in 1977.
Aged 86, Derek is full of chat and plenty of energy and tells me “acting never feels like work” as he smiles and ponders how it all came to be. Having received no formal training, Derek frequented his local cinema as a kid and would fantasise about the idea of being on the big screen. This idea lay dormant until a chance meeting at age 29 whilst being on trial at the Old Bailey. A jury member took a shine to him and convinced the other jury members to give Martin a chance and let him off lightly. As Derek was leaving the court that same jury member suggested that he should become an actor. Derek took this as a
As most people know Derek as Charlie Slater, I couldn’t let him go without finding out how he got the part in Eastenders. “I was considered for the role as Dirty Den initially until they realised that I’d make a better hard man than a ladies man. I was then considered for the role as Frank Butcher which became Mike Ried’s character. So within 7 years of interest from the BBC, they eventually found a character, ‘Charlie Slater’ that was more suited to who I am”. It is clear from speaking to Derek that he is very active and won’t be disappearing from the public eye soon.

Adam’s turning point came when a neighbour took a shine to him and told him that he thought that he would be a good salesman. This Good Samaritan leant Adam a suit, helped him with a CV and pretended that he had been working for him for a year and sent him off to find a job. JAMIROQUAI ROCKED
B
efore couch surfing became fashionable, I was crashing on Jamiroquai’s bass player, Paul Turner’s sofa back in the late 80’s, early 90’s whilst we were on tour together. He’s a top bloke, and what a bass player! So imagine my delight when I heard Jamiroquai were headlining Mallorca Live Festival this year, knowing that Paul would be performing with the funky prince that is Jay Kay. I immediately applied for press passes with the organisers and set about contacting Paul who I hadn’t seen since the 90’s.
It’s becoming a recurring theme of late that important times from my past have been resurfacing and I have been reconnecting with the people who have played a part in it. I have been a fan of the Jamiroquai sound since day dot, the funky sounds and the fresh, almost free-styling vocal approach that Jay Kay uses - it just makes you want to dance. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the keyboard player/co-writer Matt Johnson in the past, and of course Paul Turner, so I knew that myself and the crowd were in for a treat once Jamiroquai hit the stage. And they did not disappoint! From start to finish, one hour and 45 minutes to be exact, it was a pure head-candy rush. Mixing some of the greatest hits with stuff from previous albums, the set just flowed, the band were tight and Jay Kay was on point. Oh, and the sound man was on top form too whom Jay Kay gave a personal shout out to. I caught up with the band backstage after the concert and talked about past memories and present projects. Jay Kay came dancing through in only a towel having jumped straight in the shower from leaving the stage. I complimented him on his vocal excellence that came across beautifully loud and clear during the set. Being a vocalist myself, I’m always hoping that another vocalist can evoke an emotion that inspires me to continue in this creative realm. The band grooved so funky and were so connected that it felt they were all part of the same. The backing singers’ harmonies blended so sweetly, it was clear that they were all individual singers in their own right by the way each one had a different colour in tone, yet completely understood the impact of their unison. Paul Turner’s performance on the bass demonstrated to me exactly why he has gone on to work with so many great artists and is being recognised by many as a ‘one of the greats’ himself.

New & Events played him one of my tracks, which I felt surprised him, vocally anyway, and he looked me straight in the eyes and said “where’s the song hook? There’s no hook!” What an honour to have the ears of a legend share some music advice with me. This was the only conversation we had about music the entire time we spent together. What does that say about this music giant? He walks with a higher mission. I did return for his set at 2:30am which I may add, was Morales magic as he dropped classic tracks such as ´Where Love Lives´, ´Professional Widow´ - some of his own remixes and a whole lot of floor- shakers for the movers and groovers who turned out to see him.

meditated before I got there. Instead, I showed up with my reporter´s head on to capture sound bites of tonight´s performance and take a selfie and what I got was a whole lot of David Morales realness. Somehow we connected and shared a beautiful authentic conversation about nurturing self-confidence, walking in one´s truth, higher frequency awareness and participating in the game of life. David seems to have mastered all of this and is willing to share and uplift others when the energies align. He talks a deep conversation, yet light enough not to take the whole industry too seriously so he can stay out of his own way and get on with the mission at hand. He certainly has a purpose which he is very clear and precise about, and it ain’t all about the music! I told him that in my head we have already created a great song together in the studio and he immediately reached to his wallet and said (with business card in hand), “here is my direct contact, send me something”. He then proceeded to play me a track of a singer he was working with that very morning. I
If you hadn’t become a DJ/musician, what do you think you’d be doing now? That’s a very good question. I’ve been fortunate because I was able to work in music at an early age. I would probably be a cook I think. What got you into music? I liked music from about 4-5 years old. I was also curious about the sound system. A hobby got me where I am today. What’s the best song you’ve ever released and why? That’s not an easy question to answer, especially since I’m still releasing music.
I’ve worked on many good songs in my opinion. My latest one though is ´There Must Be Love´ and the story is very powerful in that song. What music or artists are you listening to at the moment? I like to listen to funky music from the 70s and 80s. What’s been your favorite place to perform in? My favorite is Tokyo, Japan, hands down. My sets are usually over 10 hours long. They love the music. Please explain your creative process as a producer. I normally start out with a simple drum groove then I start adding percussion and sounds. If it’s a vocal track, which it normally is, I would sometimes edit the vocals. I create different hooks with vocal samples. After I have the groove and the vocals I usually start with a bassline or sometimes the chords. If it’s a Red Zone track then I start, as always, with a groove then a bassline, then keyboards. What’s an average day like for you? I wake up in the morning, I have my coffee, a super-sized breakfast of either
pasta or rice with meat or chicken. Then I go to the studio. I take a break for lunch, then a siesta, then I go back to the studio until about 9-10pm. What is your favorite part about this line of work? And your least favourite? My favorite is playing of course, and my least favorite is the logistics of travelling such as flight delays, and cancellations sometimes having to take 2-3 flights to get to a gig. What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Make sure that you have a degree or passion in something else just in case. The most important thing is to have passion for the music. My life revolves around music. It’s a huge commitment.

OPENING PARTY
Balneario opens with hundreds of guests in attendance
E
ach year the Balneario beach club opening is the most popular amongst residents on the island. Aside from celebrating the opening of this huge beach club and restaurant for the season, this event is used by a lot of people as the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends. Upon entering from the winding road down to Illetas beach, the lights are visible from a distance and dominate the entire bay. Music lilts up the hill as the guests trickle down the hillside to join the celebration. A solo songstress serenades guests as they walk in before they head to the bar for a glass of wine, some bubbles or a beer. Back on the stunning terrace it is easy to spot who has been here before and who is here for the first time as the latter are seemingly awestruck by the sheer size of Balneario. This impressive structure dominates the bay at Illetas with a large inside area and bar, a huge terrace wrapping around the front before heading up the stairs to two more enormous terraces with views over the bay of Illetas. As the night progresses, the waiters serve a selection of finger food, the music continues and the guests mingle and dance. There is a photo call board and people are posing to show off their glamorous outfits and laugh with their friends. Another lovely touch of the evening was the bracelets that were handed out. Each one was handmade with blue string, two bespoke charms with Balneario Illetas on one of them and a shell on the other, and an anchor clasp. This season opening is one that nobody will forget in a hurry and was most definitely in the top 10 of the places to be this year as far as beach club openings go, we will be researching more about Mallorca top beach clubs and there facilities in the next issue of celebrity, watch this space.

BE FABULOUS at the OD Port Portals Hotel
T
he stunning OD Port Portals Hotel once again used the gorgeous backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea to host the BE FABULOUS party on their rooftop. The glitzy and glamorous residents of the island descended en masse to take in the view, sip on sumptuous cocktails and enjoy the fabulous tunes from the DJs and be entertained by the performers. As the rocked up to the bar for our first gin and tonic (a must at the OD Port Portals as their gin selection is rather impressive!) we were treated to an impressive pole dancing performance by the uber talented Dana Lazi, a lady who must have superhuman strength to stay horizontal on the pole for as long as she does. The performance was tasteful and elegant and left all of the guests in awe. Dana Lazi also wowed the crowds at various intervals throughout the evening with hoop tricks and acrobatics that were just as impressive as her pole dancing skills. As the night progressed the tunes kept pumping with DJ Des Mitchell, best known for his work with Radio One, Soul Kitchen, TMP and BCM amongst other places, at the decks. The guests moved around and showed off their dance moves before Angel Sax treated the crowds to a fantastic saxophone session - soulful sounds that perfectly complimented the setting. As with all of these events, the crowd mingle harmoniously, the music continues and the drinks flow. A nice touch this evening that the well oiled guests (by help of the gin) were offered a free shuttle from the OD Hotel at midnight to either continue on the high the evening created or head home for a good nights sleep.

t’s market day in Alcúdia and the city is buzzing with locals and tourists sifting through hundreds of stalls and haggling over the price of clothes, handbags and artisanal products. The smell of fresh olives, cheese and meat hits my nostrils before I even reach the farmers’ market where local produce is piled high and business is brisk.
On Tuesdays and Sundays there’s daytime flamenco at the Plaza de Toros BullFighting Ring at number 1, Calle del Bastio de Sant Ferran and the shows start at 1100, 1200 and 1300. On Thursdays and Sundays there’s an evening show at 9pm and you can enjoy a glass of wine or sangria in the courtyard between 7pm and showtime.
Alcúdia dates back to prehistoric times and was dominated by the Muslims, Christians, Romans and many others at different points throughout history. Threats of invasion continued during King Jaume II’s reign, so he ordered a wall to be built around the old town to keep enemies out. It dates back to 1298 and two of the huge entry gates to the historic centre have been incredibly well preserved. There are also stairs up to the top of the wall where you can walk around and take in the fabulous Sant Jaume Church rooftop views. A 14th century former hospital at number 30 Carrer de Sant Jaume is now home to the Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia and this is where you can see coins, statues and other artefacts that archaeologists uncovered at the ancient Roman City of Pollentia just There’s plenty of other attractions outside the city walls. The ruins date too; Saint Jaume Church in Plaza de back to 123 BC; the Portella, the Forum Jaume Ques was built in 1882 and has a museum inside with an amazing collection of Catholic art and artefacts. Inside the walls, narrow cobbles streets are lined with boutiques, restaurants, cafés, shops and stalls selling everything from tacky souvenirs to exquisite pottery and original paintings.
and the Amphitheatre have already been excavated and are open to the public and archeologists are still working on other areas. Xesca Rosselló, from the Consorci de la Ciutat Romana de Pollentia says that with a wide range of cultural events all year round and stage productions at the Roman Amphitheatre every Friday in August, it’s easy for foreigners to learn about the history of Alcúdia and get to know the locals, whether they’re resident in the city or just visiting. “Alcudia is a tourist zone 100 percent, for families, for ecotourism and for sport and there have been English and German Expats living here for a long time who mix very well with local people and we don’t have any problems,” she assures me. “A lot of the residents work as Tour Guides or in Hotels during the summer and they are normally busy in winter too, either learning Catalan or Spanish. After the summer season finishes, people work in the Theatre, Cinema or Auditorium because they have productions all year round, or they take part in the fiestas as actors, so it’s very easy to integrate.” Local and foreign actors will be reenacting some of the main events in history in the Old Town on July 4th and 18th and August 1st and 22nd and

“We get all types here, from the very, very rich with their super yachts in the port, to the not so rich that are staying in allinclusive hotels,” he tells me, “and in July and August it’s crazy, it’s jam-packed August is packed with great events for solid and then September and October children and adults, including a night race can be very good business wise as well.”
Alwyn says that although his figures are on par with last year, all-inclusive deals have had a big impact on businesses in the area, because people don’t want to spend their money in restaurants and bars when they can eat and drink for free in their hotel. “The Government has allowed the allinclusive hotels to encroach too far into the Tourism Sector and it’s changed people’s idea of holidays,” he tells me. “Tourists come here and stay in their hotel for 7 days, 10 days or 14 days and they don’t actually don’t see anything of Alcúdia or the island because they’re cocooned in this all inclusive genre where everything is free.” In summer thousands are drawn to the clear turquoise water and sandy beaches of Alcúdia, soaking up every last drop of sunshine while they can and this is one place that you won’t have to schlepp tired children between your hotel and the beach in the hot sun, because there’s a mini train that runs all over the place with stops at all the local hotels, the Hidropark and the beaches. Tickets cost 4 euros for adults and 3 for kids. There are literally hundreds of land and sea tours available in and around Alcúdia and there’s something to suit every budget, whether you’re interested in a Walking Tour of the Historical Centre, a day trip to the Caves of Drach, Water Sports, Snorkelling or Dolphin Watching. he Balearic Islands are famous for their beautiful, clear, turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and stunning coastlines, but the sad truth is that a significant rise in tourism has resulted in more pollution, more plastic in the ocean and more yachts dropping anchor where they shouldn’t. In the coastal waters of Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, there are large prairies of Posidonia or Posidonia Oceanica, which only grows in the Mediterranean. It’s a type of seagrass that’s known as the oldest bean on the planet because one seed plant cloned itself over and over again to produce the Posidonia prairies that are estimated to be around 100,000 years old. Matteo Trivelli is Director of the Festival of Posidonia, which features Art, Nature and Sustainable

Tourism and is dedicated to raising awareness about Posidonia. He told me why it’s so important. “If you take the Posidonia out of the the sea you will kill the ecosystem where the fish grow and reproduce and all the other marine life there will die too.” he informs me. “Posidonia helps to make sand and it protects the coastline; without it the the sea would erode the beaches.” Pollution and yachts are the main things that destroy the prairies; when anchors are pulled up they rip the Posidonia out by the roots. “Here in Mallorca, the Bay of Palma used to be full of Posidonia but it’s degrading and disappearing fast, mostly because of pollution
from boats and from the humans living in the city,” says Matteo. “But the biggest problem comes from the yachts because one big yacht anchor can destroy an area of Posidonia as big as a football field in just one day and it takes around 600 years to regrow that prairie.” The Balearic Islands is the first place in the Mediterranean to approve legislation to protect Posidonia and as a result of that new law there are more boats patrolling the coastline to check that yachts are not anchored on Posidonia prairies and Captains who do drop anchor illegally face big fines; but Matteo says the government needs to do a lot more.
“One big yacht anchor can destroy an area of Posidonia as big as a football field in just one day”
Environment “Instead of 4 boats there are now 18, but Mallorca alone has more than 300 kilometres of coastline, so it’s only covering a very small area and last year when yachts anchored on Posidonia the Captains were just asked to move and given information about Posidonia.” But Marcial Bardolet Richter from the Institut Balear de la Natura or IBANAT, who co-ordinates the boats that monitor the coastline told me that the situation isn’t always black and white. “Personally I wouldn’t fine all the boats because sometimes you can’t see the Posidonia and we don’t have maps of every prairie in Mallorca,” he informs me. “For instance, there are no maps of Posidonia in the Calvià area and there have been times when we’ve had to use professional scuba divers to see if the anchor is in Posidonia or not, so there’s no way the captains would be able to see it from their boats.” Marcial says his priority is to change the attitude of sailors and told me that several things have already been put in place to help crews to avoid Posidonia prairies.
“Captains of big boats can call Radio Channel 68 for help placing anchors safely on the seabed,” he informs me. “There are also buoys in Posidonia areas to tie your yacht or boat to with a chord and the seagrass symbol is now being put on nautical charts. The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment & Regional Planning website has a new tool that gives instant information on where the Posidonia prairies are. Just copy and paste this link into your browser: http://dgrechid.caib.es/www/ajuda_ fondeig/visor/en.html; click on the anchor in the top left hand corner of the page, then click on any coastal area of the Balearics to find out immediately whether you can anchor there or not. “A massive Posidonia Awareness Campaign is being launched next year and a new emergency number to report yachts anchored on Posidonia should be up and running by the end of this summer,” Marcial says. “In the meantime, if you see a yacht anchored illegally call 112.”
“If you see a yacht anchored on Posidonia call 112” The Balearic Tourist Tax has raised hundreds of millions of euros and cruise ship passengers also now have to pay 2 euros a night between May 1 and October 31 and 50 cents a night the rest of the year. So, maybe it’s time the Balearic Government introduced a Posidonia Tax on Yachts, Boats and Charters whose actions have a direct effect on Posidonia and who can easily afford to hand over some of the cash they rake in during the summer season? By Wendy Wighton Urquhart ot so long ago drawing on city walls was considered ugly and offensive regardless of whether it was a cartoon, a political statement or a gang tag. But over the last few years a clear distinction between graffiti and Street Art has appeared and the latter is now a respected art form. Joan Aguiló is without doubt the most famous Street Artist in Mallorca, so much so that he’s been dubbed the Banksy of Mallorca. He’s painted walls all over the island, there’s a good chunk of his work on show overseas as well and some of his paintings will be on show at Rialto Living in Palma on September 19, 2019.
STREET ARTIST
“I didn’t know about Street Art until I went to Germany,” he admits. “We did an alternative Berlin tour about the Street Art in the city and when I saw that I realised that it was more my style and that’s when I became really interested. I had to try to develop my own style without losing the identity of Mallorca; how the people live; the colours and the lifestyle on the island because that’s the type of Street Art I Hotel Carmen wanted to do.”
He’s waiting for me at a coffee shop in Pla de na Tesa on the outskirts of Palma and thankfully I don’t have to look far because his paint spattered dungarees are a bit of a give away! Tall, dark and friendly, he asks if I want to tag along while he and a couple of friends check out two places nearby that the local council has asked him to paint. As we walk and talk he tells me he’s been painting for as long as he can remember, thanks in part to encouragement from his Mum who was an Art Teacher. Joan studied Illustration in Mallorca and Fine Arts in Barcelona before finishing his University education in Mexico. He went on to create classic oil paintings for galleries, but soon got bored and began to question where his career was heading. Sso when his girlfriend moved to Germany for work he packed up his stuff and went with her and that decision changed his life. CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 116 | 30
Joan Aguiló
“Street Art is like a creative cooking explosion and every day it’s different.”
“In Berlin I saw a lot of ways to paint in the street,” he explains, “one is by spraying the wall, another is with a stencil, another is painting on a paper and then gluing it to the wall and another is painting a very big wall with acrylic paint, so anything is possible. Street Art is like a creative cooking explosion and every day is different.” Naturally the first time Joan ventured out in the streets to put up his art, he was really nervous; the last thing he wanted was to end up in jail. “I started doing collages with paper because I thought the fastest way to put something in the streets is with glue and I remember sitting in a plaza in Palma with my girlfriend and a friend trying to decide if I should put a nickname on my drawings or my real name,” he recalls. “After about 3 hours we decided that I had to put my real name because then, if they didn’t like my work they could ask me to remove it and I thought it was the honest thing to do. Just because you paint in the street doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.”
Joan soon started experimenting with a mix of collage, stencil and painting directly onto the wall and as his work became more well known he was asked to take part in Festivals elsewhere in Spain and across Europe. That inspired him to start a festival in That was seven years ago and sin- his home town of Can Picafort where ce then Joan has experimented with he decided to create a large painting many, many different ways of produ- on the side of a building, but that cing Street Art. meant he had to use a special machi-

“I am inspired by people who are not painters,” he says, “especially people like Manchester City Football Coach, Pep Guardiola, who was famous in Spain because he said that it’s not just about winning, that you have to play When Joan’s commissioned to paint with everything you have and respect and value the sport. something in Mallorca So then, schools starit’s very easy for him to ted to see him as an tie in his work with the inspiration because he community because said it’s not just about he grew up here, so for the competition it’s instance, if he’s painting near a school he’ll incorporate something education-related in his work, but when he’s working overseas it’s much harder to bridge the cultural divide, so he makes a point of getting to know the community before he starts painting.
“I was really nervous because I don’t like heights and when I started to use the machine I was very nervous,” he confides. “There are some different ways to use the machine to get the perspective right and pass the design from paper to the wall; you can make lines on the paper and then do the same on the wall but bigger; you can project the image on the wall, or you can start by making the shadows and then use a computer to project “If I go to another country I try to the picture onto the wall before you meet up with a group of people of paint it.” all ages to talk about how they live, how they grew up, what they like and what they don’t like about their city, their country or their area,” he assures me. “Then when I have some ideas I check with them again in case I need to change anything and I try to create a painting that reflects the people and the city, because they have to live with it forever.” Joan admires painters like Joaquin Sorrolla from Valencia, who’s renowned for his paintings of the Mediterranean Sea and also likes the work of a lot of contemporary artists, but his inspiration comes from a very different world. about doing the best that you can.” There are many things that Joan wants to do in the future but there’s one that’s right at the top of his bucket list. “I would love to paint a big wall in Berlin because I found Street Art there; i’ve painted small walls in the city, but i’ve never painted a big one so I hope some day I can go there and do that.”
Sometimes Joan will ask for permission before he starts painting a wall and sometimes he won’t, but says the risk of a fine isn’t his biggest challenge. “In summer it’s too hot and in winter it’s really cold which makes it very difficult when you’re working with your hands, but when you’re working in the street that’s just a part of it,” he acknowledges. “Also, sometimes the

By Wendy Wighton Urquhart eep in the heart of Palma’s old town, sandwiched between La Rambla and Calle Sant Miguel is the district of La Missió; it’s narrow, cobbled streets and 17th Century buildings are a popular haven for graphic designers, artisans and painters, including British artist, Michele Barber, who shares her studio at number 28 Carrer de la Missió with her 3-legged cat, Isabella. The walls of her studio are covered with stunning oil paintings in gorgeous shades of blue and green; upstairs an easel sits beside the window, soaking up the light, waiting for her next burst of inspiration. Michele grew up in Solihull near Birmingham, left school at 16 to train as a Beauty and Massage Therapist and owned her own Salon by the time she was in her 20’s. But she longed for a bit of adventure so in 1997 Michele and her boyfriend emigrated to the other side of the world to start a new life in New Zealand. “I always knew that I would live in that country, I’d been getting their local newspapers sent to me in England every month and I don’t even know why or how I did that,” she confides. “When we got to Queenstown I got a job as a hotel receptionist and my boyfriend started teaching snowboarding, then I worked up the mountain in the office during the season and in hotels, restaurants and spas as a masseuse until 1999.” When her boyfriend was offered a job in America they parted ways and Michele stayed in Queenstown and set her sights on becoming part of New Zealand’s budding film industry. ARTIST “We rented the flat we owned to film crew through a friend of mine,” she recalls, “and she gave me the ‘phone number for the Makeup Designer on the film, “Vertical Limit” so I just rang her up and said, I’m a beauty therapist, i’ve done lots of wedding makeup and I just want to work on films, i’ll do it for nothing, i’ll just do the extras; do you need any help doing extras?“ A couple of weeks later Michele was called to work on set, which she says was both very nerve-racking and very exciting. “There I was with my little bag and all these other people had these professional concertina makeup boxes and I was shitting myself because I felt like I was a little bit out of my depth,” she admits. “But then someone said ‘right we’ve got 200 people this morning and they’re all going up on set to the mountain so
you’ve got 5 minutes for each one.’ I remember when the first person came in I was thinking, please don’t sit in my chair, please don’t sit in my chair, but of course they sat in my chair but I only had to do tan lines and very easy foundation stuff, so it was fine and that’s how I got started. I got called up for a day job and I ended up being there for a month and it was so exciting.”
“Lord of the Rings” was being filmed on New Zealand’s north island at that time and with one movie already under her belt Michele contacted their makeup people, who surprised her with an incredible offer.
Graham McTavish, Michele & stunt double Winham Hammond
“You can go for a wee, but anything else you have to bring back with you in a bag” “They had hundreds of people who needed wigs and moustaches put on for the film and they said ‘if you come up to Wellington at your own expense our top designers will train you, for free,’ which was unbelievable.” she says. “We learned how to do the eye lifts for the elves, put on facial hair and fit wigs and the wigs were made from real hair and cost up to NZ$6,000, so if you didn’t handle them properly and put them on the blocks at the end of the day it would cost them a fortune.” When the “Lord of the Rings” production team moved to New Zealand’s south island, Michele was given one day’s work, which turned into a four month gig.
Art & Culture “We went all over the country putting on 40 wigs a day and working with all the top designers, who are the Oscar winners now,” she tells me, “so our training in that film was incredible and if we’d done it in England it would’ve cost thousands of pounds. “I loved and adored my job.” she explains. “We were going up in helicopters and small planes and landing on mountains, it was such an adventure, even although we were working extremely long hours and getting up at 2 and 3 in the morning.”
of them you’d be dead because we were thousands of feet up. Anyway, before we left, we were told ‘there’s no toilets up on the mountain, so you can go for a wee, but anything else you have to bring back with you in a bag,” she laughs. “There were two women and the rest were guys so they built a snow wall; but you’re still chained together, so you had to unhook, and all the men would be standing behind the wall and us girls would have to wee on the other side, right beside our workmates, some of them are blokes you’ve known for years, but others you’d never met, it was a nightmare and in the end they built a little tent, I think they were sick of seeing our bottoms.”
Graham McTavish & Michele
“Being a makeup artist was my dream job” Michele was determined to learn as much as she could about the makeup industry, so she went to back to England and enrolled at Greasepaint Make Up School to reinforce what she already knew, fill in the bits she’d missed and get the proper qualifications. Later she worked on “Avatar” creating scars all over actor Steven Lang’s face and arms and Michele says Director, James Cameron, was a real taskmaster. “I really liked him but he was very tough and if you don’t knowwhat you’re doing you’re toast,” she informs me. “The first day I was on set with him I worked 16 hours, but it was mydream to be given the opportunity to do that job.” Michele worked on numerous films and commercials, madefriends all over the world and has some really great memories. “For a film we did about Tenzing Norgay, we were helicopteredonto the top of a mountain with these big crevices and the whole crew was chained together on ropes, because they were doing stunts over the crevices and if you fell down one

walking every morning and take loads of pictures and come back and I would just start painting and the more I painted the more I enjoyed it, so I just painted nonstop.” Michele has created a wide range of amazing oil paintings and some of them have now been printed on fabric and turned into beautiful beach sarongs. She’s also painting portraits and experimenting with wood canvases, lacquering and sculpting. With one highly successful career already under her belt, Michele is looking to the future, confident that her new life as an artist will be even more rewarding.
“Being a makeup artist was my dream job,” she tells me, “but Art is something that I feel I can make a living at for the next Travelling back and forth to Europe to 20 years or more and it’s something work on films and commercials made her that I absolutely love, so I want to get myself established while i’ve still got realise how much she missed the culture the energy to do it.” and history in this part of the world and with her parents getting older, the pull of home became stronger. Weddings by Y T
By Wendy Wighton Urquhart here really is nothing quite like a good wedding and the first glimpse of the bride’s dress as she walks down the aisle is always eagerly anticipated. But finding THE dress can be really stressful, especially if relatives and in-laws stick their oar in and there are so many serious choices to make; should you go traditional or wild child; buy off the rack to stay in budget; splurge on that one off designer dress or opt for something funky you can wear with white cowboy boots? With those questions in mind I went to Barcelona to meet the World Famous Fashion Designer, Yolanda Pérez who’s dressed Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Raquel del Rosario and Kim Kardashian’s bridesmaids to name just a few. She laughed when I ask her if having celebrity customers made a difference and told me that she’s not impressed by fame, but she does appreciate its perks. “It is important for the brand to have celebrity customers,” she admits, “but famous people never pay. We usually get a request from their stylist to send 3 or 4 dresses for them to choose from and of course we’re happy to do that because it’s great publicity and helps to promote the brand.” The family’s involvement in the bridal sector dates back nearly 40 years, her Mum was a dressmaker and inspired her daughter to get involved in the business. Yolanda opened her first wedding dress store in Sabadell near Barcelona when she was 20 years old and

Yolancris gradually started designing her own pieces for customers who wanted unique dresses for special occasions. When the business moved to Barcelona in 2005, Yolanda and her sister Cristina started their own label, Yolancris and three years later they launched their first bridal wear collection. The magic happens at the Yolancris Workshop in the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat district of Barcelona wheremachinists, pattern drawers, cutters, markers and garment pressers are hard at work, all on the same floor, amid thousands of colourful bolts of fabric, rails of wedding and evening dresses and half dressed mannequins. “When I start the collection I work very slowly,” she tells me. “80 percent of the time i’m thinking and 20 percent i’m working, so I need everybody helping me and it’s better when everyone is on one floor.” Yolanda always buys the best fabrics she can find from all over Europe and her creative process is really unusual; she never uses a sketch pad, instead, she lets her imagination soar. “I didn’t go to university to become a designer,” she confides, “I taught myself and I work either directly on the mannequin or directly on the customer like they did in the past and for me it’s faster. It would be impossible to sketch things like my patchwork designs because I use special fabrics so I have to do them by instinct. The Yolancris ranges are inspired by many different things, including the architecture of Barcelona,

historical events, catwalk fashion shows and sometimes even by the weather. The “No Fear” 2020 Bridal Collection is lavished with hand embroidered floral appliqué, feathers, buckles and silk and Yolanda tells me it was inspired by the 1960’s and 1970’s and is all about being free to do things your own way. “It’s the Horses by Patti Smith; a Jimi Hendrix solo; Coltrane’s free jazz and the summer of 1969.” she explains, “it’s Billy Elliot dancing down the street; It’s Janis Joplin live; It’s Pollock’s dripping and its Nina Simone on stage.” The new ‘B’ By Yolancris Wedding dresses are a nod to Yolanda’s original range of Ibiza inspired designs that took the industry by storm and feature crochet, linen, tulle, lace and fringes. Customers adore the vintage boho designs which are a million miles from the blancmange styles of yesteryear and Yolanda says brides should wear whatever they want on the big day. “Whether you’re a little bit more casual or elegant or sexy you must find your own style in a wedding dress.” insists Yolanda. “It’s better to be yourself and wear a dress that suits you than to let your family or friends push you into wearing a traditional gown.” The Yolancris Couture range is much bolder, more decorative and highly daring with some conservative, regal and boho.

Alberto Francia, Florist
By Wendy Wighton Urquhart
bride’s bouquet is one of the most important things at a wedding and some people actually buy two the same so that mthey can do the traditional throwing of the bouquet at the mwedding and keep the other one as a memento of their special day. Alberto Francia parents actually started the first ever flowerm shop in Palma in 1969 and he used to help out in the shop after school and later took floristry courses in Madrid, Barcelona and Germany. When his parents retired, Alberto took over the business and says he’s used to dealing with the rich and famous. “Every summer we do 8 or 9 celebrities weddings or events and we’ve done flowers for lots of famous people, dignitaries and members of royal families from Europe and the UK too, but I would never divulge who they are and we don’t ever publish photos of those kind of events on the internet, he assures me.
“We’ve done flowers for lots of famous people, dignitaries and members of Royal families” “Privacy is very important to me and I believe that one of the reasons we have been here since 1969 is because when people come to us they know everything will stay private.” Ninety percent of the flowers that Alberto uses are imported from Holland but the rest come from mainland Spain and budgets are always very tight.
“The floristry business is highly competitive so you have to keep your prices very low or you won’t survive, you have to think all the time what you’re going to do in the next two months.” Alberto says it’s absolutely crucial to be super-organised when you’re doing wedding flowers and be ready for absolutely anything. “Eight or 9 years ago we did 35 silver candelabras with flowers on the top of the tables for a wedding by the beach but three hours before the event we had a really bad storm and all the tables, chairs, flowers and everything else was completely destroyed,” he cringes. “We had to remake all the candelabra flowers and cover everything with plastic because the rain was really heavy, but the minute the bride arrived, the sun came out and she couldn’t believe that everything was so perfect. So, we always have a plan B just in case.” For more details and information log on to: https://albertofrancia.com
Ellen Ryan, Hairdresser it’s absolutely essential to try different styles before the wedding day. “Brides really should ask their hairdresser to do a test run of one or two hairstyles at least 2 or 3 months before the wedding and take their veil or tiara with them.”

o, you’ve got the dress and your flowers are ordered, so all you need to decide is what to do with your hair. You definitely don’t want a bad hair day when you’re getting married so it’s really important to choose a style that suits you and a hairdresser that you already know. Ellen Ryan was 16 years old when she started her hairdressing apprenticeship at a Salon in Darwin near Blackburn and moved to Mallorca 5 years later. She’s been a stylist for more than 20 years and says

Two years ago Ellen opened “Bangs Hair & Lashes” in Santa Catalina and is always super busy juggling appointments, her teenage son Brad and summer wedding bookings and she’s also had some crazy days with clients along the way. “One time I arrived at a wedding venue and the bride and her friends were a bit drunk,” she confides. “It was pouring rain and I spent 5 hours doing the bride’s hair and all the bridesmaids’ then at the last minute she said she didn’t want to get married in the rain and asked me to come back the next day. It was a disaster,” she continues, “they’d basically had the
reception without the wedding and everybody was really hungover. The bride had been crying, she still had last night’s makeup on, hadn’t had a shower and she’d had a fight with her mum. Anyway I did all the hair and everything and she did actually get married later that day.” Ellen has seen a few bridezillas in action but thankfully has never been on the receiving end of that type of behaviour and told me that although it can be really stressful trying to organise everyone so that the bride gets to the altar on time, she absolutely adores being part of someone’s special day. “You’re part of the gang and the girls are always so nice but so nervous, so I try to calm them down and keep everything nice and relaxed.” she says. “That’s the part of it that I really enjoy and not only do I get to see all these amazing venues and fantastic fincas in Mallorca, i’m doing something creative at the same time. I love it.”

Author & Journalist the sweet smell of citrus from nearby lemon and orange orchards and as we navigate some very tight corners I catch glimpses of olive groves clinging to the slopes of the distant Tramuntana mountains. When we arrive in the courtyard of their finca, Can Vaquerí, Anna is waiting for us with a big grin on her face and a cat twirling around her ankles.
Anna Nicholas
T
By Wendy Wighton Urquhart oday i’m meeting the British Author and journalist, Anna Nicholas, who’s lived in the Sóller Valley for nearly 20 years and written a series of best-selling books about her life in Mallorca which include fantastic insights into the culture and history of the island. Anna’s husband Alan meets me on the outskirts of the city and guides me up a narrow lane where the air is thick w i t h
She tells me that they found this finca purely by chance after making friends with a Real Estate Agent when they were renting a holiday property nearby. They weren’t looking to buy anything in Mallorca but he offered to show them some properties just for fun and Anna couldn’t resist. Can Vaquerí was last on the list. “We drove up here and this place was just shambolic, I mean, the roof was in, it had a slaughterhouse and a huge cisterna with frogs and God knows what else, chicken coops, it was a mess,” she laughs. “But Alan saw the land which was also a tip and we just thought gosh it’s amazing. The roof had caved in, all the rooms were tiny and then there was a funny little room which we discovered later was a hiding place for a priest, because this was the house of a priest and the church is just across the orchard, so it’s a very old house with a lot of history.” Everyone, including Anna’s husband, thought she was absolutely bonkers to even consider buying a place in Mallorca but after months of discussion that’s exactly what they did and Anna began commuting to London to continue her PR company in Mayfair. As her dual life took hold, Anna decided to write a book about her new life and things appeared to get off to a

flying start when a literary agent took her on immediately. But disaster struck when complications at the company led to the resignation of her agent and she was forced to look for another one. “I knew Summersdale’s books because i’d read one or two so I wrote a mad email to them saying, listen my agent’s just gone off, I’ve got this book ready and i’m absolutely fed up, could I send it to you?.” After months of to-ing and fro-ing Anna’s book was accepted but she was told in no uncertain terms that a lot of changes were needed which she admits wasn’t easy to hear. “I had to dismantle about 30 percent of the book to meet their criteria and it was bloody hard work but my God did it teach me a lot about editing, structure and plot weaving. In fact I think it’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” she confides, “because when I wrote the second book I had hardly any structural changes, but I did learn the hard way.” The six books Anna’s now written about Mallorca have proved to be a massive hit, especially with the locals who can’t wait for the next instalment, “Peacocks In Paradise” which is due to be published in May next year.
Anna’s also a bit of an adventurer and has been invited to join numerous expeditions to far flung places by the British Explorer and author, Colonel John Blashford-Snell, CBE. She’s taught English to remote tribes, stayed up all night catching moths, galloped across Mongolia, and helped with Spanish

All sorts of things went wrong but we got it there in the end and we also brought a doctor who happened to “I went to live with this very remote be a piano tuner.” tribe called the Wai-wai in a very remote area of Guyana, about three and a half miles from the capital, Georgetown and that was a really tough trip,” she recalls. “They were hunter gatherers who lived in the trees and they had nothing and that was a big lesson for me. We had to go through swamps, eat what they ate and go out hunting at night with bows and arrows, that had poisonous darts and we often didn’t have much to eat.”
“I’m a bit worried about to be frank,” says Anna, “because if I don’t make each section in time they’ll take me back, but I hope I finish it, even if i’m last”. Anna is staying on after the marathon to cover stories in Johannesburg, Botswana and Zimbabwe before climbing Table Mountain, then tackling the new Blue Mountain slack packing route outside Elgin; all of which she will write up for British newspapers and magazines to help fund her trip.
Despite her action packed itinerary, Anna has also found time to write her debut novel, “The Devil’s Horn” which is about a local girl called Isabel Flores Montserrat, who Anna describes as “a sort of young Miss Marple of the Anna used the Guinness Book of mountains who works for the National Records to teach the children and over Police solving crime in the Sóller time she was able to communicate a Valley” and tells me delving into a new little with the tribe. genre also meant lots of gory research.
Anna & Col. John Blashford-Snell (Amazonas)
“We had to go through swamps, eat what they ate and go out hunting at night with bows and arrows” At the end of that trip, the Wai-wai chief showed them a picture of a grand piano in a 1950’s catalogue that had been left by missionaries and asked Anna and John to bring one for the village church, which was a bit of a tall order since they were in the middle of nowhere. Back in the UK, Anna and John raised the money to buy the grand piano and Anna tapped her contact at the Guinness Book of Records for some reading material for the tribes. “We stuffed the piano with Guinness Book of Records books to give it ballast and we took off bits of the piano that we could so that we could put them in different planes and the military in Guyana supported us,” she tells me. “I think it took three planes to get all the bits over there and we had to carry
“What was interesting in the Guinness Book of Records was things like bicycles and cars because they’d never seen them before or the colour pink because they didn’t have pink flowers, so they kept pointing at it and looking at it then the teacher explained that they’d never seen pink,” she recalls. “Guyana was probably my most amazing expedition in terms of living in the wild.” An avid runner, Anna usually signs up for a marathon at least once every two years and at the time of our interview she’s preparing for one called “The Wildest Of Them All” in South Africa.
“We’re running through a lion’s den” “There are 300 runners and you do 42 kilometres through this wild game reserve with lions, elephants, rhino and leopards literally on your path,” she explains, “and you have to sign a waiver because it’s dangerous, we’re actually running through a lion’s den.”
“I had to learn all about things like the trajectory of a knife if it goes into flesh; blood-spatter; what you have to use to clean up bodies and how not to leave any traces, but it was really fascinating.” “The Devil’s Horn” book launch will take place on October 10th at San Francesc Hotel in Palma and Anna says it was such a joy to write that she’s planning to turn it into a series and has already mapped out four more books

ental Centre Mallorca® is a walkin dental practice, owned and run by a married British couple: Paul and Kate. We have been in the profession for over 25 years and have extensive experience in all aspects of dentistry. For many years we have run our own NHS and private dental practices in the UK. Despite relocating to Mallorca, we still maintain our registration in the General Medical Council, the British Dental Association and the British Orthodontic Society. Our clinic was founded on the belief that the latest dental technologies, modern state-ofthe-art equipment and highest standards of care should be available to every patient. We strive to provide professional and comprehensive dental care in a pleasant, stress-free and pain-free environment and we put emphasis on the importance of an individual, personalised approach to every patient. During your free consultation a thorough examination is performed. We believe that it is important that patients see and understand their dental problems so, every problem area we find is shown to the patient on a screen in magnification using our intraoral camera and the photographs are printed for the patient to take home with them. After the examination, we will spend as much time with you as is required to discuss all available treatment options and answer your questions. At the end of the consultation, we will provide you with a written treatment plan and the cost of each option to help you make an informed decision. Although we specialise in all areas of dentistry including general dentistry such as fillings and the treatment of gum disease, our special interests are in cosmetic dentistry, implants and orthodontics. We can restore missing teeth using implants, crowns and bridges and we cooperate with some of the best dental laboratories in the UK and Mallorca to guarantee long

lasting, natural looking results using the highest quality of materials. If you want to transform your entire smile, we can help you achieve that in just a couple of visits with the help of veneers which allow you to change the size, shape and colour of your teeth. And if you have an impromptu special occasion coming up and want your smile to be white and bright quickly, we offer in office emergency tooth whitening. One of the things we highlight to our patients is that it is never too late to straighten their teeth. We offer all available forms of orthodontic appliances for adults and children, including the extractionfree Damon® System braces and the nearlyinvisible Invisalign® aligners. So, whether your teeth are rotated or you have gaps or a tooth that cannot come out, we have a solution best suited to you. Prevention is a key aspect of maintaining good oral health and early introduction into dental hygiene is the best way of preventing problems with teeth in the future. For this reason, during the first week of every month, we offer free checkups for all children. During such a check up we will teach your child about the proper teeth brushing technique, familiarise them with the equipment we use, to ease their stress, and of course we will check their teeth for any problems which need to be taken care of. If you are worried that your child’s teeth are not growing straight, we will also be able to advise on the best suited orthodontic appliance and if your teen is
understandably reluctant to wear metal braces, we offer clear braces and aligners for patients of all ages. Some people believe that certain problems are too small to warrant a visit to the dentist. However, even the smallest problem can affect the quality of your life and can lead to more serious general health issues. For instance, something as common as gum disease, if left untreated can lead to heart disease and joint problems. So, whether your gums bleed or itch, you have jaw pain or bad breath, do not hesitate to visit us because no problem is too small. Sometimes it happens that you find yourself in need of help during a holiday or evening hours and knowing that, we offer emergency dental care outside of our opening hours so help is always just a phone call away. Finally, on top of offering the Airflow air abrasion system, we are proud to soon be the first dental practice in Mallorca to own Waterlase® from BIOLASE, the most advanced dental laser for hard and soft tissue. What does this mean to you? It means that you can have your teeth treated without a drill and without pain. Motor Sports Events Update Palma Superyacht Show
This time last year, I remember feeling slightly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things going on as the summer comes alive after an intentional winter ‘hibernation’ - lazy and welcome evenings on the sofa with the fire roaring and the latest Netflix offering. It is very much the social calm before the summer storm and immediately after the last issue went to press, the sun came out for the 36th Palma Superyacht Show in front of La Lonja, with a better than ever attendance and, as always, the latest attractive offerings to empty one’s wallet. A couple of years ago, they improved on the natural ‘horseshoe’ shape of the Marina layout by adding a floating bridge on the outer edge and thereby created a circular walk around which to look at the exhibits and meet friends, colleagues and clients. I heard many people say that it was the best show to date - although perhaps we always say that, captivated afresh by our colourful industry displaying its latest fare in the spring sunshine. My employers e3 Systems exhibited as always, so this was a working gig for me, but of all the shows that we as a company do around Europe and the US, this is very much our local patch and as such, becomes something of a social for us as well as an important trade opportunity at the time of the year when superyacht crews are sorting out their communication and connectivity needs for the season.

The Palma Yacht Show was swiftly followed by the Palma Vela - one of the Med’s most important and well attended regattas in which we were competing in the Flying Fifteen class. Without harping too much about the weather, it’s obviously a major
factor in an event like this and it was, without question, the best conditions in which I’ve competed with a sunny 15-20 knots of wind each day, keeping us very wet indeed in our 20ft keelboat with some steep waves in the bay. Being directly upwind and downwind courses, this typically meant that we would go over one wave and clean through the next going upwind- filling the boat like a bath - before some wild surfing downwind as the self-bailers sucked it all out again. As with any major regattas here, there are some very capable crews and of all the fun club events we do through the year, this is the one when everyone gets serious and I’ve rarely seen so much new kit being Photo courtesy of 6 Points (Cap de Pera Lighthouse) unwrapped at the beginning of an event. TT Races
I’ve mentioned before that one of the benefits of living on Mallorca is how easy it is to leave it when you have to, hosting an airport from which you can fly to almost anywhere in Europe in an hour or so, with your bum on the seat often costing less than the bag you take with you. That bit’s always bemused me... As it was, within my Christmas stocking this year were flight tickets to the Isle of Man for the TT – or Tourist Trophy motorcycle races - something which has been on my own personal bucket list for as long as I can remember, with a legendary status as the biggest road racing festival on the globe. So we swopped our warm Mediterranean island for a cold and wet one in the middle of the Irish Sea. Awareness of the TT is high amongst those interested in the sport, although it was the superb 2010 film Closer to the Edge, primarily featuring the maverick and often unintelligible Guy Martin that brought the event into many people’s sitting rooms and greater consciousness. Although the weather (still going on about it..) did it’s best to curtail much of the action over the four days that we were there - and the worst in most anyone’s memory - this is a truly remarkable event. CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 116 | 52
The ‘lap’ itself is just under 38 miles of public roads through villages, countryside and over the shoulder of the Snaefell Mountain - and is run as a time trial rather than a race, with bikes starting every 10 seconds and racing the clock, races being two, four or six laps long. We watched mainly at Kirk Michael on the west side of the course, hosted by Mallorca friends Mike and Leigh Holt, who were kind enough to lend us one of their cars for sale from their BCC Cars forecourt, which was separated from the track by a robust looking orange rope.. It was fascinating to watch it with past Manx GP winner Bernard Murray (raced on the
Mike Hailwood TT commemorative plaque
same course) and marshals who had worked trackside for over 40 years of the TT, with a few stories – both happy and horror - to tell. Mike and Leigh went beyond kindness to also keep us copiously fed and ‘watered’ throughout. There is something staggering about standing by a roadside in a village as riders come past at 180mph, five feet away. One’s eyes can barely follow them and it’s a unique breed of motorcyclists that take part in this road racing division of the sport when, quite different from
circuit racing with the large expanses of grass, gravel traps and padded barriers that await falling riders through mistakes or mechanical failures (dangerous enough in itself), crashes at the TT will result in hitting a tree, a phone box, a driveway gate post, wall or rock face - or in the case of us in Kirk Michael, our barbecue and a load of cars for sale.. Speeds on the very quickest sections are now over 200mph (320kph). Fatalities have occurred at an average of 2.3/year every year since 1911 - a staggering statistic that has now claimed 259 lives and one which leads to much debate about allowing people the freedom to do this sort of thing. If someone came up with this idea for the first time tomorrow, it wouldn’t fly, but this is our (and particularly the Isle of Man’s) heritage. The riders know the risks, utterly intoxicated by living life on this particular edge and it’s what they live and very often die for. Where would the lines be drawn otherwise for other extreme sports such as wingsuit flying, free climbing, summiting Everest etc? So long as spectators don’t get killed (which is a complete no-no and what stopped the classic road races of the last century such as the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio), then the freedom to do this sort of thing has to remain. Having said that, it was very galling to see the 27 year old Daley Mathison come past us in Kirk Michael, to then learn that he died 10 minutes later at Union Mills with his young wife Natalie and 6-year old daughter in the Paddock. It’s toughest, without question, on the families of these young riders. Having just received this dreadful
Boats, Bikes & Automobiles news, hearing Natalie articulate with whatever positivity she could bravely and generously muster how happy he was, both in life and about being part of this incredible sport, was difficult to scale against the long term magnitude of what had just happened to them as a family. A scene repeated on average over twice every year. We did the event in style though, staying with a former rider who wasn’t competing this year, but had a house full of TT memorabilia and a man cave full of bikes. I was hoping to test his Ducati 1098 and lap the course during the gaps between the schedule, and sadly the weather put paid to that. Next time...
W Series Formula Three Women’s Championship
Arriving back from the Isle of Man at midnight, I took off early the next morning to Misano in Italy in my new summer role running the VIP Hospitality HQ for the W Series - a Formula 3-based series put together by a wonderful old friend and work colleague from my London days. My gratitude to e3 to allow me to do this over the relatively quiet summer months when most of my clients are elsewhere, bobbing around in the Med. The series is specifically designed to promote the participation of women in motorsport and particularly in providing female drivers with the opportunity to shine on a bigger stage and attract the early attention of team managers in the senior single-seater racing categories of Formula Two and ultimately - and hopefully - Formula One. Of the 900 drivers that have raced in Formula One since its inception in 1950, just two have been female and the last one - Lella Lombardi – was over 40 years ago. It’s a slightly shameful if understandable statistic, the vast majority of drivers
coming through kart racing with most of them being young boys. If 1/1000 serious kart racers make it to F1 and 5% of these are girls, do the maths. As a table thumper for women’s equal opportunities in general (that’s half the global population right there...) and particularly in sport, I’m hugely proud to have joined the team that has pulled this all together. Our Advisory Chairman - and one of the primary facilitators in getting this series off the ground - is David Coulthard and the team is made up of many senior people from global sporting events and organisations, along with a number of ex-McLaren and Williams personnel who I’ve watched on television for over 30 years, so I’m excited to be in very good company for such a cleverly constructed and positive initiative for women’s sport. Accepting that a female athlete will never win an Olympic 100m or Wimbledon final against a male, it’s also shameful that in Forbes´ latest list of the world’s 100 highest paid people in world sport, Serena Williams is the first female at #59 - and she’s the only one on it…
the 1990’s with a sponsor of the Benetton F1 team, in the most difficult of circumstances I took on the management of the club. Each year, alongside the Mallorca Classic Car Club and the American Car Club, we host a Summer Classic Car Show in commemoration of Russell – a hugely popular and well known character - and make a ‘Minute of Noise’ in his memory. A date for diaries is therefore Wednesday 24th July when we will do so again at the fabulous Boat House Restaurant and Bar on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma where, although fine detail is in development, we will have around 100 fantastic classic and performance cars, growling engines, lively music and a delicious barbecue. Full details available in due course from Cristina at The Boat House: events@theboat.es
The final three rounds are in Nuremberg in Germany and Assen in Holland in July, before finishing at Brands Hatch in the UK in August, with all races televised live on Channel 4 in the UK and a commentary team that includes F1 regulars Lee McKenzie, Ted Kravitz, Allan McNish and David Coulthard.

Property market update
T
here is no doubt about the fact that Brexit has slowed things down this year in the property market for the British buyers, and it does seem to be having a knock-on effect for other nationalities, confirmed by other colleagues in the industry. The fact that the British Government can’t make a decision appears to have affected the European election’s results with the Brexit Party winning the majority seats, Labour coming in 4th and the Tories 5th with only 4 seats. With Theresa May stepping down and a new Conservative election to take place, one wonders how the outcome will affect the markets in general, and could it be possible for a general election to be called earlier? Currently the next general election is scheduled for May 5, 2022. It would require two-thirds of MPs to vote for an election, or to give a vote of no confidence. Many commentators believe senior Tories would rather put up with a restless electorate than face the very real probability of a wipeout at the polls if an election were called before Britain’s departure from the EU. With Boris Johnson currently in the lead, one hopes he can perform miracles to get us back on track if voted into Office. There are those who will still move forward with their ‘home in the sun’ dreams, despite this hiatus, which the market will be grateful for. They will be glad to know that agreements are already firmly in place between the UK and the 27 EU members on legal residency, healthcare and the UK state pension for the transitional period up to December 31, 2020. This means Britons will continue to benefit from the UK government’s ‘triple lock’, so their state pension will keep pace with inflation. What will happen thereafter would be anyone’s guess, but since there are pensioners and expats affected on both sides – one would hope and anticipate a balanced and fair final outcome for resident expats. Returning the focus back to Mallorca, when embarking on the journey of searching for a property, the biggest decision to make at the start is which agent or agents to use. What many new arrivals looking for a new place in the sun do not realise is that estate agents work very differently from the UK, in that there is very little property exclusivity. Mainly because different agents focus on and attract different nationalities. Which means that many agents have very similar properties
– so in fact there really is no reason to contact multiple agents when searching, but finding the right one is key. One who works with your interests at heart to find you the right property in the right location, and works in association with all the main agents on the island, saving you time and hassle dealing with a multitude of agents and contacts. That’s where using an agent who is a member of a new association on the island, Real Estates United (REU), such as myself, comes in very handy. Made up of around 70 agents, they all pool resources and properties in search of the right property for their client. Sometimes the agent will have the right property, and sometimes the right client for another agent’s property. Collaboration and communication is key. Equally if you have a property to sell it is worth checking if they are members of REU which will ensure greater coverage, with less hassle, and less work. You can contact Real Estate’s United on www. realestatesunited.com . For any questions or if you require assistance with selling or buying a property you can contact Amanda on: ajb@mjcassociates.net.

This was a renovation project in Edificio Silver Point in Puerto Portals where we have converted a standard two bedroom one bathroom apartment into a two bedroom two bathroom apartment with a open plan living area with the kitchen at the terrace end of the apartment making it a very social area and giving the feel of being on the back of a Sunseeker Motor Yacht. The Design and Project have worked out extremely well and most importantly the clients are very Happy with the end result. We contacted Lifestyle Building solutions and Carl Flay due to having a flood in our property located in the residence Silverpoint. The team was headed up by Carl´s brother Jason Flay who oversaw every aspect of the work which was carried out from start to finish including assisting us with the insurance company. Carl Flay worked very closely with both myself and my wife through every aspect of the work which included the design, choosing materials, changes to our layout as we wanted something completely different and on the lines of the "Sunseeker Motor Yachts and to our delight this was achieved 100%. The overall renovations where carried out very professionally and to a high standard leaving us with a newly designed apartment that we are very proud of and we would not hesitate in recommending Lifestyle Building Solutions for anyone considering renovation or constructions works.
