PALMA BOAT SHOW

Night & Day Report and photography by Ken & Angela Ross

Under the watchful gaze of La Su Cathedral, this years ‘35th International Boat Show’ once again proudly boasted of its ever increasing size and popularity. With over six hundred boats on show (three hundred of them actually in the water) and over two hundred and fifty different exhibitors from all over Europe, the five day event was always on course to be a winner. Certainly with the estimated thirty four thousand visitors, the show was packed to capacity most days. Hello Sailor! - the beautiful people attend the Boat Show

Also becoming more and more popular is the evening event, one very special night when many of the boating companies hold an open bar, offering canapés and in some circumstances even a barbeque. Although predominantly for specially invited guests - on our visit it seemed pretty general that visitors could stop off at most of the many participating stands and procure a welcoming glass of wine or beer. Entertainment was also a main feature on the more salubrious of stands, ranging from top DJ’s to amazingly talented violinists, to several all out wandering bands of drummers and the more upmarket traditional Spanish guitar band. Such is the popularity now of this somewhat notable evening that it has become a free standing social event on its own, certainly worthy an entry in the diary of any trend setting resident.

ITV film 9 British showbiz stars of the 60s, 70s and 80s who travel to Las Vegas and rehearse for their dream one time stage appearence -e-

LAST LAUGH in VEGAS But who actually had the last laugh ? Report by Ken & Angela Ross

Two of our favourite guys, Jess Conrad and Kenny Lynch, (who have both worked with us when helping several charities) became part of another of those carcrash television series that regularly now provide work (and pension top-ups) for many of the ‘past-their-sellby-date’ celebrities, which some of us may not even remember. It was actor Michael Caine who once said ‘thespians don’t retire - the phone just stops ringing’! Well that was once upon a time, but now that ‘Reality TV’ programmes have arrived, producers are taking lesser known (lesser expensive) veteranentertainers to places like India or into the jungle to eat wallaby wobbly-bits. The world is now the vetrans oyster (or wobbly-bit). ITV’s weekly presentation of ‘Last Laugh Vegas’ was one of those shows, stretched over four (or was it five episodes?) to show viewers how nine former veteran troopers of the stage and screen, Cannon and Ball, Bobby Crush, Jess Conrad, Su Pollard, Kenny Lynch, Anita Harris, Mick Miller (no! me neither) and Bernie Clifton, could survive living together whilst rehearsing for a ’one event’ special gig in Las Vegas. Now firstly we have to say, some think the veteran troopers were possibly there to be humiliated and embarrassed – which we must admit did seem to start the very instant they arrived, even before they unpacked their bags. The first curved ball was thrown at them - A beautiful Las Vegas villa at our groups disposal, all nine of them – a villa which had only eight bedrooms.

Ego time Egos to the front, (obviously all edited for our entertainment), it was bedroom selection time and the start of the falling-out procedure was already underway. Jess Conrad (being Jess) was one of the first up the stairs (may be the oldest but watch that guy go!), quickly bagging what seemed to be the best bedroom suite. Inside, with the door firmly closed behind him, Jess surveyed his kingdom. “A smallish room but with a big mirror” Jess commented to himself, as always his trade mark humour of being able to laugh at himself came to the front. Viewers may have been allowed for a moment to think this was setting a lighter and more comical mood. No such luck, outside on the landing, while the rest of the veterans scrambled in and out of the other rooms, there were disparaging remarks about Jess’s selfishness. Comments of “That wasn’t fair.” (or worse). “The girls should have been given first choice of bedrooms” were being bandied about by other out-of-luck none best bedroom searchers. Kenny lynch to the rescue, at least enough to quell any storming or siege of Jess’s chosen bedroom. Kenny tells the annoyed troopers “I have known Jess for many, many years and I tell you one thing, you will never ever get him out of that room now”. Next morning – Jess was shocked to find that he has to do his own breakfast (Sue Pollard to the rescue) and do his own ironing (Kenny to the rescue), after which our intrepid troop of veterans go forth to the theatre where they are to start rehearsals for their one-off gig.

Issue 111 | Celebrity | 17

Here we meet their mentor, the Vegas equivalent to Simon Cowell (?), performer Frank Marino (top drag artist and famous comedian, or so we are all assured), a sort of older Michael Jackson pale skinned lookalike (but not really). In reality, this first encounter could actually be described as one of the funniest parts of the series, when mentor Frank sits back in the theatre to let each of our troop go though their own particular stage act which they were once famous for. Franks expression as he sits and stares at the stage when Bernie Clifton comes running on in full costume doing his old act of ‘pretending to be riding an ostrich’ was one of the all time classic’s of television. Talk about the gulf which lies between American and English humour – Frank just watched totally bemused, wondering what an earth an American audience would make of this weird man chasing around the stage wearing tights, a bright yellow fur rug and holding onto a puppet ostrich head. It was as if Frank was in shock after meeting an alien from another galaxy. This was only seconded by Frank then trying to persuade comedian Mick Miller to have his hair cut. Mick had to explain to Frank that his bald head and shoulder length thinning whispy hair hanging from the sides of his head was in fact his famous trade mark look – more and more bewilderment from Frank!

All through the series, each of the troopers were phoning home (emotional scenes of ‘I miss you so much’) and whiling away the rest of time saying how proud they were to be playing here in Vegas, now the highlight of their career! No one stopped to ask if they didn’t do it when they were at their peak (except Anita who had been a show girl dancer in Vegas), what do they expect now?

Lots of (unscheduled) laughs throughout, when at a poolside party, Bobby Crush introduced himself to an American guest, saying he was a pianist – “your a penis” replied the totally shocked guest! Also more laughter when a mature guest pointed out to Jess Conrad that his mother, before he was born, had a poster of him on her bedroom-wall. Jess replied, “yes, my posters were everywhere, in those days women fans used to faint over me,” thoughtfully adding, “my fans still faint now, but that’s because they cannot stand up for too long.”

Genuine Medicine man

Pianist Bobby Crush - ‘Opportunity Knocks’ winner (for our younger readers, think ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ 100 years ago when televisions were powered by steam’ and it was in black and white, just starting to go into a sort of vague colour mode). Bobby was in Vegas to play out his act as the legendary Liberace. So an opportunity to go VIP to Liberace’s private museum and tinkle on the ivories of the great man’s piano was for our pianist far too good to be true. So happily going along, he takes Jess with him – big mistake! Bobby all enthused, stands in wonderment, like a boy in a toy shop – whilst Jess (being Jess) completely takes over the cameras. The guide assumes it is the smartly dressed Jess who is the Liberace performer and turns the conversation all on to him, with poor Bobby waiting in the wings like the only boy in the toy shop who didn’t get a toy.

Another outing for our hardy troopers was to go into the middle of the dessert to meet a (genuine? - this is Vegas remember) Indian Medicine Man. Firstly, for some unexplained reason our troopers had to erect his giant ‘tepee’ themselves. Jess (being Jess) explained he wasn’t able to help, as he doesn’t do physical! Eventually, ‘tepee’ up, (genuine) Indian Medicine Man (smoking pipe) suddenly appears as if from nowhere? (Four wheel drive vehicle in background).

18 | Celebrity | Issue 111

Medicine Man tells each of the troopers his thoughts and philosophy on each of their personas, mysteriously revealing to showman Jess that he didn’t think ‘Jess Conrad’ was his genuine birth given name – wow! Could viewers now ever doubt the Medicine Mans amazing insight, obviously bequeathed to him from his ancient forefathers? (or Googling Jess Conrad?) Other great moments (still watching through our fingers) was when a mealtime discussion turns to Su Pollard and Kenny popping out to a drive-in take-way to collect lunch. Sue (screeching accent, think Hi-de-Hi) leans out of the car window and is shouting, trying to make the attendant on the other end of the intercom on the wall (?) understand what she is ordering – Kenny watches, turns to the camera and says “Its not the intercom, she’s talking to a f-----g fuse box.” The big Finale So at last, on what seemed the final episode (?) we waited with bated breath for the grand finale the much-hyped gala show in the ‘iconic’ theatre – this reads, not actually on the main Vegas strip!! We watch, the clocks ticking, after weeks of viewing their lives and rehearsals, where is the show – only fifteen minutes of the programme to go and still no presentation of the actual show our troopers have done? It has been at times embarrassing, but good fun in which the entertaining troop, under the circumstances, did there (sort of) best, so now we wait for the show.

Twelve minutes to go and at last they present the finale – each of our troopers walks on stage, one by one. With the huge financial outlay in ITV’s expenses now including ‘four’ showgirl dancers with giant feather fans accompanied by four male dancers. The cameras pan away to show the audience (specially bussed in? free entrance?) Each artist walks on, they sing, the Cannon and Ball duo perfrom a comedy routine which was probably hilarious thirty years ago. Each act gets a minute or so on stage (after all this hype), then a grand singalong together (includes the ‘four’ showgirls, now wearing silver top hats. Sing-song ends - and that’s it – gone! It was quickly mentioned by the narrator that their other channel, ITV3, would be showing the full show? Did someone on the main ITV channel chicken out and decide to screen it later on the lesser channel? But please dont be put off - if repeated, watch it! This is top television moments - recomended! Best line of show ‘Award’ The best line of the show Award? Actually it was the very, very ‘last line’ (the last spoken words) of the show, which obviously the producers felt iconic enough to leave in interpret this how you wish? The narrator says to Kenny Lynch “If asked, would you do it all again?”. Kenny looked straight at the camera and replied“Do it all again? I’d say,” (pause) “No F-----g Way” Screen goes black, no sound, to titles- programme ends!

BILLYS.

ROOFTOP BAR

BOUTIQUE & GELATO Report and photography by Ken & Angela Ross

& Great nights out Holding a successful launch party for the latest ‘roof top’ bar in the posh playground of Puerto Portals is never going to be easy, but by adding in some of the smoothest sounds you will ever hear, mixing this with a line-up of beautiful models showcasing the latest in beach and casual wear, providing good and efficient service and then combining all this to create an atmospheric cocktail of relaxation and ambience, then that is about as successful as you can ever be – welcome to Billys All eyes were on Billys after its new lavish makeover and opening, a new drinking venue on the block, which provides yacht and sea views to challenge any other establishment in the port. With a delightful inner bar Billys also offers a large open terrace where guests can while-away these summer evenings enjoying the cool breeze from the Mediterranean Sea. For the gourmet ‘Foodies’, don’t worry, from one of our favourite restaurants, Spoon, situated below Billys, the most succulent of dishes can be ordered and brought up to your table. Bar prices are not as scary as some in the playground, the service was certainly smart and efficient on our visits, and as always we appreciated the mood and cool vibes with yet an undercurrent of excitement as to who you will meet or bump into next.

We’re turning 16 with style

VIP’d into the front seats to cover the opening night of mega star Elton John’s European Tour, or positioned in front of six rampaging polo horses as they charge down towards you, mallets to the front, chasing a rocket speeding ball as it whistles past your ear – all very Celebrity – all very keeping our readers up to date on what’s happening at the best events in the social world that surrounds them. As Alice in Wonderland, we also often follow the white rabbit down and down the rabbit-hole, all to find out the who’s who and the when and the where of everything that is occuring? Of course at the same time not forgetting to take with us our notebooks and cameras to all the many ‘Mad Hatter Tea Parties’ we are invited to! And that’s what we do – with exclusive access to where it’s all happening, we dine, we talk, we take photographs, we are at the very heart of the pulse on events and gatherings. Celebrity is a high gloss colour (large format size 32cm x 23 cm ) magazine which has had its articles reproduced by major worldwide publication groups. Our interviews and photographs have been syndicated throughout the world, with our own exclusive photography featuring many of the most renowned personalities, stars and royals. We are dedicated to our own in-house features and high standards of photography. Every article we have completed throughout the world has been initiated by ourselves, personally with interviews and photography. As we have often said – if it’s not in Celebrity, it didn’t happen!

On an assignment to the trendy Puerto Portals photographing the Royal Yachting Regatta, Celebrity’s Ken and Angela had been the long term subject of a BBC camera crew filming their every move to include in one of it’s top summer programmes. Suddenly during the filming in the cordoned off area for press and television crews, the Spanish King, His Majesty Juan Carlos (who was there to compete in the regatta) came over to the attending press and held out his hand to Ken and Angela. They couldn’t believe it, neither could the worlds press who stood aghast around them, nor just as much could the huge crowds of spectators watching. King Juan talked casually and with friendship of their newly created Celebrity Magazine, and wished them well. He then proceeded to walk back towards his friends who were waiting next to his yacht ‘Bribon’, moored at the quayside, but half way back, the King stopped, looked back at the Celebrity duo and beckoned them to follow. Six Armed Royal Protection Officers instantly made a corridor from the press area and led them to the Kings yacht. King Juan Carlos stood smiling amongst his sailing companions and unbelievably he suggested our duo take an exclusive photograph for their Magazine, laughingly pointing his finger at them saying it had to be on the front cover. This has to have been one of the greatest accolades for Celebrity Magazine, a Royal Seal of Approval from His Majesty King Juan Carlos – a continuing bond which has remained until this day - a bond which has followed through to Spain’s younger King, his son, His Majesty King Felipe and his Queen, Her Majesty Queen Leticia

During these years Celebrity have been fortunate to work with some of the worlds most famous stars of the silver screen, with many respected politicians and the industries greatest pop and rock idols. Top sports stars such as Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal plus World Champion Boxers Nigel Benn and Frank Bruno have all posed for our camera. Our photographs of televisions Jeremy Clarkson and his Top Gear team with the controversial glamour model Madison Welch was another scoop we achieved – Jeremy (although all agreed earlier), was not a happy-bunny! At the Governor Hotel, Park Lane, London, we were guests of Jess Conrad for his Celebration Award Dinner hosted by the Variety Club of Great Britain – ‘A Celebration of Jess’s 100 Years in Show-Business’ was the joking title. Here Celebrity were sat next to Angela’s long-term friend, actress Vicky Michele, photographing Jess amongst his two hundred guests, which included a host of television personalities and stars. So accepted has Celebrity become that we now receive invitations worldwide. Russia was the subject of several of our amazing and intriguing trips – Ken and Angela were invited by the Kremlin, to visit Moscow and St Petersburg which certainly proved to be two cities that lived up to their sinister and somewhat intimidating atmosphere (two amazing seven pages features). Contrast that against the delightful time spent in Miami Beach, an invitation from the Mayor, where everything was sun-kissed and a totally laid-back experience – both these were amazing Celebrity feature articles – both for separate reasons. In the West-End Celebrity worked with the beautiful and acclaimed actress Claire Sweeney and the American super-star Patrick Swayze, both appearing together on stage at the Piccadilly Theatre in the Stage production of ‘Guys and Dolls’. Here Ken and Angela were were lavishly entertained during the interval with Champagne in the ‘Queens Royal Reception Room’, later taken to the trendy ‘Caprice Restaurant’ for dinner – this was a truly amazing evening with a true legend of the silver screen. Celebrity was also invited to dinner and an exclusive (and very rare) interview with mega pop idol Sir Cliff Richard, another interview and photographic opportunity conceded purely because of the trust Celebrity has conveyed throughout the years – for Celebrity, the trust and the legend lives on.

The press photographer’s camera flashguns lit the entire scene as model after model presented the different creations. The judges, Alex Casals, Carlos Delgado, Juan Pedro Lopez, Tania Presa and Gemma Marchena ultimately choose Pau Nieto in first place, followed by Espernza Martinez and Sara Bauza. CLASSIC CAR RALLY Report & Photography by Ken and Angela Ross

Top Gun - Christina & Chris

More winners - more Champagne

Yet again the Monte Carlo experience hits us with the XIV Classic Car Rally bursting into life with over one hundred international drivers competing for the coveted ‘Grand Winners Silver Trophy’. And as always, when it comes down to the gala presentation evening, the time when all awards are presented – ‘it is the winning - not the entering, that really counts (?)’ So with much gusto and steady nerves the collective group of very expensive cars had set off each morning on what was actually to prove a very gruelling and challenging course. Of course there is the group who are here purely to win, the professionals – usually the winning team driving a very expensive and ultra powerful Porsche. For the true lovers of cars however, the owners of some amazing classic vehicles, it sometimes does seem it is the taking part that they love most. On show are the Morgan’s, the much loved classic 1963 Jaguar sports car, a Cobra Hawk, and for the more modest enthusiast, a 1965 Alfa Romeo Sprint. At the pointy end (so to speak), the ‘mean machines’ include a 1986 Sierra Cosworth, an amazingly souped-up 1971 Ford Escort, plus all the Porsches, QuattroSports and BMW’s with their banks of spotlights balanced on the front-grill, which meant that individually each car could light up a whole village. Certainly, race aside, the highlight for most is the return to base, like a giant pit-stop the cars roar back, times being taken and cars examined by their back-up teams. This is where the car and rally enthusiasts can look over an amazing selection of top vehicles, classics of years gone by. Nearly mandatory now in this age of winners receiving their awards, the Champagne bottles are shaken and everyone sprayed. Certainly the party night is enjoyed by all, stories told, tales of near-misses swapped, thrilling and scary experiences no doubt exaggerated slightly – but all good fun and it contributes to an amazing atmosphere. A truly great event, which was appreciated by both fans and drivers, the organisers should be proud of their success.

Boris Becker Broke Bankrupt Break-up and now Squatters! Exclusive photograph by Ken & Angela Ross

One of our favourite visitors, Boris Becker, is certainly not having the best of times, bankrupt and still climbing out of the troubled property debt of his magnificent property here – he is advised he now has ‘squatters’ making themselves comfortable. And before you think how worse can it get for this poor guy – well how about throwing in a divorce! The squatters, calling themselves the ‘Intergalactic Auxiliary and Rescue Command’ (on behalf of - higher Powers?) claim to be renovating the property (?). Their self-acclaimed leader (called, Jesus Brother Gut) has said his group see themselves as house-rescuers. No doubt Boris feels a lot better now knowing his nine million pound property is in the hands of those – higher powers. A local estate lawyer was quoted as saying it can take two years to clear out squatters.

Just how much can this poor guy take

The real bad news is that Boris and his wife (model) Lilly have split after nine years of marriage. The couple understandably have gone through a bad time over the past year or two and it with great regret we report their confirmed break-up. Lilly gave Boris tremendous support during his financial crisis but the strain eventually broke the relationship. Lilly said that “during all the stress we simply disconnected and went our own ways without really noticing.” The couple have one son, aged eight, and Boris has two further sons from his first marriage to actress Barbara Feltus, plus a daughter from his famous ‘restaurant cupboard’ tryst with a Russian model. Lets hope we have something nicer to report soon on two people that really did make a nice couple.

FASHIONISTAS TO THE RESCUE

Photo (L to R) Juan Pedro Lopez, Alex Casals, Carlos Delgado, Tania Presa and Gemma Marchena

Judging top fashions should be nothing new to ‘Ribes and Casals’ fabric-superstore Director Alex Casals. Never the less on the occasion of a rather special fashion show presented at his Palma store consisting of some of our youngest designers – Alex managed to put together a team of top fashionistas to assist Carlos Delgado (Fashion Designer and Personal Shopper to Ribes and Casals), Juan Pedro Lopez (Fashion Designer who flew in from Barcelona), Tania Presa (well known Fashion Designer) and Gemma Marchena (Fashion Journalist). Great fashions and with a top fashion team, the special event was a huge success

Once again Heroes Bar and Garden lounge, Portals Nous, joined forces with the Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz’ to help raise funds for disadvantaged children. “The charity needs the backing of people like Heroes Director Joycey, it is invaluable to us” says Allen and Rosemary . “I know in this particular instance he and his staff at Heroes worked over several months to raise funds for Easter Eggs, enabling us to distribute them to the children’s homes throughout the entire region.” The charity visits most of the children’s homes, helping financially, especially over the seasonal periods where a little extra funding or the delivering gifts is so fundamental to the children welfare. The charity is also totally responsible for a halfwayhouse for the children when they leave the homes and need time to prepare for college, university or to develop skills for their future life. PARTY-PARTY

Stefan photographed during the event with several beautiful clients.

Artist (Paintress) Adela Ojeda with Stefan

Music by Alex Xela

What started as a small in-house party for top hairdresser and visagist Stefan Niedenzu quickly became a local street party with several nearby shops and businesses joining in. Art was the theme as his boutique salon was decorated with original work by the artist, Adela Ojeda. Music, superb catering and countless bottles of chilled wine ensured everyone enjoyed the special event. Guests spilled out into the neighbouring streets until it became one long street party. Stefan is no stranger to celebrity status himself with many of his clients being from the world of show-business and television fame. The evening became a highlight of the area with wine being poured in many of the businesses you visited – a superb idea and one that Stefan is going to make a regular affair.

WHITE WINE IN THE SUNSHINE One of our most popular wine merchats is Eduardo Saavedra, the man about-town who supplies the very best from Cellers Unio At this years boat show Eduardo was presenting (for sampling) his latest top wines, amoungst them the rather superb Llicorella (village Wine) white wine, a superb offering in the way of a crisp white.

ALL ABOARD No question of what to do when opening a new showroom for Tot Nautic, it was time for a party – and that exactly what they had. Barbecued ribs, coffee and wines all helped the new showroom in Son Bugadalles feel like home. The company staff posed for our photograph in a completely restored and very rare 1963 Boston Whaler. Bryan, hosting the celebration dinner at Balcon de Maria

Bryan wiith Dolina Reynolds, Head of the International Dept’ and Eva Serra, Deputy Mayor for Sport at Ajuntament de Calvia

CYCLINGS SIX-POINT CHARITY CHALLENGE Bryan Visser can certainly be described as a man on a mission – as a prolific fund raiser for several charities it was only a matter of time before he would come up with an amazing scheme of his own to raise even more funds for worthy and desperate in need charities – and so ‘The Six-Points Charity Cycling Challenge’ was created. Last month, he and forty-two other cyclists set out from Calvia to circumnavigate the island (without any external support) and cover a six point specific course, lasting three days (two overnight stops). The challenge took in some of the most demanding and strenuous routes, but also rewarding, taking in some of the most picturesque and beautiful landscapes. The culmination of events saw a glittering Celebration Dinner at the restaurant Balcon de Maria in Santa Ponsa where Bryan was able to thank his fellow cyclists, helpers and sponsor. At the same time this enabled him to inform everyone that the ride had raised a staggering twenty thousand euros, all to be donated to the charity Asdica (supporting young disabled people in Calvia). Many thanks to the sponsors which made Bryans charity ride so worthwhile – Adjuntement de Calvia, Pinmar, Ticket Agency, Tolo’s Restaurant, Frux Private Bank, Secure Trade, Calvia Vet, Arash Rentals, Jaggy Thistle Pub , TipTop, and Physicool.

PARTY-PARTY, AND LUNCH GOES ON AND ON! Another Sunday - another Barbecue Lunch at Kirk and Kays home - with enough food and drink to sink a Battleship, the party duo once again keep their repuation safe as the top party-party hosts in Portals.
