First of all, I would like to thank all of the people who make Celebrity Magazine possible, (you will find their names in the “Meet the Team” section opposite). It takes a great team to put Celebrity Magazine together in between juggling the confinement at home and family life - it just goes to show even in this difficult time, great things can be achieved with teamwork. Being part of a great team makes everything possible, so thank you! This edition, myself and the Celebrity Team aim to bring to you, our readers, some upbeat and positive information and give you some amazing tips on places to visit and people to see (when it is possible to do so, of course!). Whilst talking about the current situation, a friend of mine recently reminded me of a phrase that I had forgotten all about - “this too shall pass”. No truer words have been spoken and when this eventually does pass, we will reflect on the recent events. Our confinement has turned our world upside down, but from it we will have become stronger and learnt many things. Our reach is immense allowing us to connect around the globe with the power of the internet. Many of us have reconnected with old friends and some have made new ones, but most of all, hopefully we have enjoyed and appreciated our loved ones, we have listened to the quiet which has allowed us hear clearly, and now we are stronger than before. I invite you to read and to enjoy our online edition of Celebrity Magazine Mallorca and show your support to local businesses. My team and I have donated much time to this edition, perhaps more so than ever before, to show our gratitude to local businesses, many of which will count on you, our readers, to bounce them back to greatness. #SUPPORTLOCALBUSINESSESINMALLORCA. Please share this hashtag on your home page, like our page and invite your friends to CelebrityOnline. Thank you for taking the time to read Celebrity Mallorca Magazine, stay safe, stay home, and stay strong.

RUBY TURNER Soul Survivor I finally took the musical journey of tuning into Ruby Turner’s new album ‘Love Was Here’ and there is no disputing that Turner’s voice is beautifully rich in blues, gospel and R&B. Her raspy vocal styling really is what makes Ruby a cut above the rest and, for me, the album is reminiscent of the sounds of yesteryear with its melodic songs and easy grooves. By Larrick Ebanks
“In many ways, this album is the one I’ve always wanted to make. The feel and the grooves I’ve heard and loved over the years from artists like Curtis Mayfield, BB King, Ry Cooder, The Reverend Al Green to name but a few. The opportunity to make a new album came through the very lovely, Chris Hession. He kindly introduced me to Nick Atkinson and Kat Eaton; a dynamic, confident and determined production team. Their writing and groove were simply irresistible. They ignited my desire to write again and I loved every moment of the creative process,” Ruby told me when we last spoke. The album’s title track ‘Love Was Here’ is beautifully haunting, and vocally convinces the listener that sometimes hope is all we have in times of uncertainty. The naked vocal performance at the end of the song moves you emotionally. When the singer, musicians and producer align in one common goal to capture the overall vision and feeling of a collection of songs, which this album does so well, the end result is a timeless piece of Ruby magic. Ruby is known mainly for her Top 20 hits: ‘If You’re Ready Come Go With Me’, ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and her number one 1 USA R&B single, ‘It’s Gonna Be Alright’. She is also known for her duets with several Motown stars including The Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin, The Four Tops and Junior Walker, all of which were showcased on her 1988 album ‘The Motown Song Book’. Her vocal contributions for other artists are endless having worked with stars such as Mick Jagger, Steve Windwood, UB40 and Culture Club. On Bryan Ferry’s ‘Slave To Love’ it is Ruby’s sultry tones that can be heard throughout the track. Ruby has also appeared in several TV shows and movies including ‘Doctors, Little Britain and the well-known Richard Curtis movie, ‘Love Actually’. Ruby holds a solid fan base thanks to her 4 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
dedication to touring nine months of the year, as part of the tapestry that is Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and touring with her own band. More information about her music catalogue and live shows can be found at rubyturner.com.
Q&A WITH RUBY TURNER What first got you into music? Theatre is where I gained my confidence to stand on a stage and sing, so in truth they are not far apart, the spoken words vocalised into song. It’s all drama. What’s the best song you’ve ever released and why? The song ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ is the song people mostly associate me with and one of my favourites to perform.
What’s your favourite place/s to perform? The Royal Albert Hall with Jools Holland and his orchestra. Always the most exciting and wonderful night. What is your favourite part about your line of work and least favourite? I love the collective sound of a band in a live concert, connecting with the audience. But it’s hard to get to sleep because of the adrenaline high you get from a performance. That’s tough sometimes when you’re very tired from long hours on the road. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? My advice is simply this: find your own path and try not to be too distracted by all the so-called competition. Believe you are truly unique and stay in your lane. Gain wisdom to be the best artist you can be, but most of all, enjoy your gift.

Lockdown Legends Kindness is infectious ByVicki McLeod
How did you react when you were told you’d have to stay in your house for a couple of weeks? At the time did you think it would go on for quite this long?
Cake making with Gigi, a lockdown highlight. Photo Oliver Neilson
I remember telling my daughter who is fourteen that she wouldn’t be able to go to school and instead she could homeschool in my office in Santa Ponsa and I’d shuttle her back and forth between the office and the stables in Calvia where we keep her beloved horse, Effie. How naive I was to think that would even be an option: we’ve been in our house, at the time of writing, for 40 days, which is actually the official length of “Quarantine”. The word quarantine comes from “quarantena”, meaning “forty days”, it comes from the 14th-century and describes the designated time period that all ships were required to be isolated before anyone could go ashore during the Black Death plague epidemic. So even if you haven’t learnt how to play the guitar, perfected your Spanish or got that body ready for the beach at least you now know the origin of the word of what we have all been doing all this time. How have you been getting on? My husband says that I could be busy in an empty room and it would seem actually, for once, he might be right because I have been very busy. Firstly, I set up a community group on Facebook called “Majorca Mallorca, At Home Together”, within a couple of weeks its membership had grown to more than 2300 people. “Spreading as quickly as the Coronavirus’’ could have been a rather 6 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
Gigi on Effie, with Angelina, Faustine and Sophie at Club Caballisto Son Malero
distasteful advertising slogan for it. What has the group been up to? Everything from live storytelling to all-day scavenger hunts to Saturday night quizzes to bread making tutorials, professional chefs sharing their secrets, magic lessons, dog training videos, many, many different workouts, yoga and pilates sessions as well as daily meditations for the health of the planet. So something for everyone. What has been interesting is how committed the group has become to each other, kindness is infectious it would seem. The only rules are: no rumours, no conspiracy theories, no random “Houses For Sale” adverts and no negative posts. Incredibly the group have followed the rules and embraced the “Good vibes only” idea. The group have been supported by several businesses who have donated prizes and vouchers for competitions who receive page likes and shout outs for their generosity. It didn’t take long for me to need some help which came in the form of Kirsty, Daxa, Julia, Ian and Karen who all contributed their time. The wellness professionals who have been teaching their classes for free in the group have also been helping when a member needs someone to talk to or some advice. It’s not all cookie making fantasyland when you’re living in an apartment with a baby in the heart of a global pandemic, so although the group is lighthearted it is also
kindhearted. It’s proved to be a valuable resource and one I think which will keep going after we get out of the pickle that we are in. You’re very welcome to join, the more the merrier, if you want to pitch in with an idea then go for it. In the meantime, some sort of business life has had to go on. In my self employed role as a professional copywriter, journalist, content creator, and photographer, I have the privilege and great responsibility to keep several local businesses in touch with their clients through their social media channels. Many of them have been closed but they still need to communicate, and that is where I come in, writing and producing good looking and appropriate posts for them. If you have a business in Mallorca and you aren’t using Facebook etc. and are neglecting to connect with publications like Celebrity Magazine to build your audiences right now then please, please get on with it! If you need some guidance with your content: how to present and plan it, then get in touch with me and I will happily give you some advice about how to start. You can find me via www.phoenixmediamallorca. com and www.vicmcleod.com And finally, who are my own personal lockdown legends? Aside from my family
MALLORCA and the people who have been working on the front lines to keep us all safe and well? I’m going to start with Calvia Vet in Santa Ponsa who took care of my four-legged best friend Basil when he wasn’t feeling too good. Dr Joe Arrindell, from Care 4 Health in Port Calanova, is my osteopath and has been working during the crisis seeing people online via a “TeleHealth” session or
in-person when it is needed to help relieve pain. Thank you for being there for your patients, myself included, as “Homeworking Neck” is a thing. Thank you to my trainer Rob Martin from CrossFit Mallorca for all the online sessions he has been teaching to keep us all motivated. Finally, thank you to Sophie and Angelina from Club Caballisto Son Malero who have cared for many, many
horses, including my family’s, during this time through every kind of weather and completely on their own. We can’t wait to be able to hug you and say thank you in person. Stay safe everyone, stay grateful, and stay creative, if you can dream it, you can do it. Vicki x

During this lockdown period, many of us have been kept entertained by some of our favourite celebrities and artists around the world. The Celebrity team would like to share some of the videos and pictures that have put a smile on our faces in the last few weeks. photos sourced from social media
GARY BARLOW & OLLY MURS Gary Barlow has been hosting ‘Crooner Sessions’ on his YouTube channel and collaborating with lots of different artists to lift our spirits. One of our favourites was with cheeky chappy, Olly Murs, and their rendition of Take That’s ‘Shine’.
MICHAEL BALL AND CAPTAIN TOM MOORE Captain Tom Moore has inspired the world with his fundraising efforts by raising over €30 million for the NHS. The 99-year-old war hero has been featured in a duet of ‘You Will Never Walk Alone” with Michael Ball and The NHS Voices of Care Choir which has reached number one in the UK charts. Have the tissues handy when you listen to this one - it is very emotional! BEVERLY KNIGHT AND JOSS STONE The soulful voices of Beverly Knight and Joss Stone joined via video to sing Bill Withers’ ‘Lean On Me’ along with other singers to support the NHS workers and their incredible efforts.
DAME JUDI DENCH National treasure and award-winning actress, Judi Dench, has embraced the TikTok revolution and has been featured in videos shared by her family. In one she can be seen dancing to a routine with her grandson and in others, she is getting the punchlines to his jokes, much to his frustration!
NEIL DIAMOND The theory of Everything actress was spotted Neil Diamond took to Twitter with a comical interpretation of his most famous song, ‘Sweet Caroline’. Singing with his guitar in front of the fire, Neil changes the lyrics to “Hands….washing hands” as well as changing other parts of the song. Will we be able to hear the song any other way after this?
ONE WORLD: TOGETHER AT HOME Stars from around the world joined in an eight-hour extravaganza to thank the key and essential workers that are working so hard on the front line to support us during this difficult time. Lady Gaga, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift and hundreds of others treated viewers to performances from their own homes and reiterated the importance of staying at home. The performance, although eight hours long, is very humbling and definitely worth a watch. RHOC’s Hanna and Martin in Lockdown Hanna Miraftab and Dr Martin Kinsella are always busy with their various projects and filming the Real Housewives of Cheshire and it seems that they are just as busy in lockdown. Find out what they have been doing to keep themselves occupied. By ben Mulveys
In lockdown during these challenging times, many of us are struggling to find motivation and we look to social media to find the inspiration to improve, whether it is a workout video, a meditation soundtrack or just some sound advice from trusted professionals. The power couple, Hanna and Martin, have been using their time in lockdown together to reach out to their patients, followers and fans and share their expertise. “Being at home is a great time to look after your skin. None of my patients can come to me but I try to help them with ways to look after their skin themselves”, Martin tells me. Dr Martin specialises in antiageing cosmetic treatments and dentistry and works with patients to achieve results by tailoring specific skincare treatments depending on each person’s skin type. These Universe Skincare products and treatments are available in his clinics in the UK and in Santa Ponsa here in Mallorca and, once prescribed, can be used at home - perfect for your lockdown skin regime. Hanna has also been keeping busy by looking after the patients of her dental 10 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
practice. “It was hard for many of our dental patients when we had to close for the lockdown as many people were in the middle of treatments. We have managed to advise our patients remotely and deliver their antibiotics and medicines to their houses.” Hanna has also been posting videos on social media to advise people which homoeopathic and home remedies can be used to alleviate dental pain. Many of you will know both Hanna and Martin from the popular show, The Real Housewives of Cheshire, which has recently started airing its eleventh series on ITVBe. As a show that features lots of social gatherings, posh lunches and swanky parties, it has been a challenge to get these episodes aired during lockdown due to social distancing guidelines. “We have been filming everything from home which has been interesting. The production team set us up with remoteaccess cameras in the house and we have been using those to record all of the master interviews and scenes at home,” Hanna explains. So far, there are seven episodes scheduled for this season and more will be
dependent on the lockdown restrictions and how the relaxation of the lockdown progresses in the UK but they are grateful to be able to air what they can at this time. Aside from their work commitments, the couple both have had birthdays during their time at home (not much fun for anyone!) but made the most of it by having their own party for two and a few drinks and a boogie at home. They have also been keeping in touch with friends via Zoom calls and quizzes and have become quite the TikTok maestros. Both Hanna and Martin have been active on social media and their videos are receiving quite a following, some of which you can see on Celebrity MagazineTV on YouTube. Martin is also studying for his Fellowship in Anti-ageing and Functional medicine and both of them are completing odd jobs online, ready for when things go back to normal.Dr Martin’s clinic, re-enhance in Santa Ponsa will be open for business as soon as it is responsible to do so. In the meantime, find Hanna and Martin on social media and be sure to tune into ITVBe on Mondays at 9 pm GMT, 10 pm CET for the next episode of the Real Housewives Of Cheshire.

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES
by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to the Tramuntana. Known locally as Soller Shirley (amongst other names) this is my world. Half of Mallorca lives under the watchful eye of the Tramuntana mountains and this article allows you a little glimpse of our place in the Universe. The west coast of Mallorca has a uniqueness not given too many places. It is a UNESCO heritage site in honour of the Moorish influence of the past on the water collection of the area. The Tramuntana Mountains in all their glory are the backdrop to this outstanding location. They run the whole west coast from Estellencs to Formentor keeping the secrets of the past and the promises for the future in this never to be forgotten landscape. Water is the key to sustainable life and tourism on this island and the collection of water was the first priority of the Moors when they inhabited this land centuries ago. They carved out the mountains to make olive terraces and created dry stone water channels throughout the mountains to collect every drop of rain that fell. This is the gift of generations past to us today and why we live in a green and pleasant land where water is plentiful and the sun shines. The West coast of Mallorca incorporates Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Valldemossa, Deia, Soller, Fornalutx, Escorca, Pollensa and Formentor. This represents almost half the island of Mallorca and many of our mountain towns and villages. The City of Soller has been designated by UNESCO as the Cultural Centre and it is the large heart of the whole area. All other towns on the list have wonderful qualities and their own special claims to fame but it is to Soller that many people go to start their adventures in the North West coast of Mallorca. Our journey starts in Estellencs under the watchful eye of the Galatzo mountain. This area of outstanding natural beauty has many fans. They see this is the heart of rural 12 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
Mallorca without any of the commercial trappings that are found a few miles away. The mountain behind and the rocky cove below from which to have that all important cool down is what Estellencs does best. The woodland around the area are recovering from the forest fire that devastated parts of this region a few years ago. The rebirth and growth of the new forest is a delight to behold and a once in a generation opportunity to see the phoenix rise from the ashes. Banyalbufar has four small mountains to itself and sits in the heart of craggy natural beauty. It is open to the sea from the Port of Canonge and the pine walks of the area make this a favoured place for locals and visitors. The coves and inlets of the area and the stunning walks make this a place that everyone want to keep to themselves like a ‘best kept secret’. Valldemossa rises from the road with its turrets gleaming and a sense of excitement as you arrive in a busy, bustling place. This place is on the map because of its stunning location and beauty in the heart of the Tramuntana and thanks to Chopin. The Monastery of Valldemossa housed the composer Chopin and his wife for a brief time and that created a bond which will never be broken. Chopin is played in the museum each day and pilgrimages are made by those who love his music. Valldemossa is famous for being the birthplace of Santa Catalina Thomas who is a Saint of Mallorca. Her image is to be found on the entrance to many local houses as a sign of welcome to the visitor. This is also the place you must eat the local Coco de Patatas – this is a sweet bun made with potato flour and sprinkled with icing sugar. This is a delicacy to have with coffee round these parts. Valldemossa claims to have the best bakers of these on the Island. The road from Valldemossa to Deia hugs the coastline and makes it one of the journeys of the world for its glorious sunsets and
fantastic mountain and sea views. Deia is the village that has many books already written about it. The people, their rock and roll lives and the history make this a very special place. The incomers outnumber the residents and the common language is English. Deia was the spiritual home to so many artists, writers and creative people from the 1930’s onwards and continues to be today. Many famous people have homes here and the summer is full of them and their friends just enjoying this natural place. The mountains enfold you as the sun goes down and the night life of Deia comes into its own. Café Society, impromptu music and dancing and a general appreciation of all the good things that life has to offer is contained in this place. A trip to the cemetery of Deia reads like a ‘who’s who’ – so many people came, made their lives here and left their mark before staying forever. Soller has a train that links it on one of the most picturesque train journeys of the world to Palma. The journey through the Tramunatana is an expert feat of engineering and tunnels. The descent into Soller has everybody marveling about how it happened. The train stops at a look out point as it enters the Soller Valley and passengers are allowed to get off to take pictures. From that point it is hard to see how the train will ever get down the mountain – it does – every time. The Soller Tram is waiting for the train and will take you, in its old fashioned way, through the back gardens of Soller and down to the sea. A throwback to the past and to the trams links with San Francisco and Portugal before they arrived here. The City and the Port are linked in a way that no other place on the island is. There are many places in Mallorca which have inland towns and ports but it is only in Soller that the transport links allow them to be one place. The Port of Soller is the playground of the City and is a civilised beach resort. The yachts set sail every day taking their private day
charters off for the highlight of their holiday. The sea is the vast playground of the Port of Soller with many caves and coves waiting to be discovered. Some restaurants such as Foradada – near Deia are only accessible by sea and become a magical lunch stop on the yacht trips. In the other direction the sea takes you the easy way to Sa Colobra and the gorge which is the starting point for so many tortuous walks through the mountains. The Repic Beach of the Port of Soller hosts the fine dining of the area with all the great restaurants spilling out to the beach terrace. The Santa Catalina side of the resort has the pleasure of watching as the day’s catch of Soller prawns are brought in by the fishing fleet and sold at the waters edge before most being taken off in refrigerated lorries to the excellent restaurants of Palma and beyond. Fornalutx is a village above Soller which has earned the title ‘Prettiest Village in Spain’ on a number of occasions. It is nestled in the dip in front of the highest mountains of Mallorca and is aptly named Fornalutx which translates to ‘oven of the sun’. It is always hotter there than in Soller in the summer and colder in the winter. The unrivalled beauty of Fornalutx and its situation in the Tramuntanta has earned it a place on many posters advertising Spain worldwide. To stroll its cobbled streets or relax with a cool drink in the square is a must for a holiday in these parts. The hamlet of Biniaraix just down the road from Fornalutx is best known for its location as the starting point for the walks to the Puig de Massanella along the Barranc de
Biniaraix. Walkers have long known about this wonderful place and it is a ‘must do’ walk on the Tramuntana list. A circuitous driving route through the outskirts of Soller brings you to the road entrance to Biniaraix which is so narrow that often people drive on. They can’t believe that the gap is really the road entrance to this lovely place. Escorca is the place in the heart of the Tramuntana between Fornalutx and Pollensa which is mainly mountains. It is sparsely inhabited apart from a few roadside stops for food and refreshment. There are many more sheep in Escorca than people that is until you come to Lluch. The drive over the mountains towards Pollensa is a stunning journey and one where you are at one with nature for the whole route. The Monastery of Lluch is centred here and it is a place of pilgrimage and huge historical interest. The Black Madonna is found in the Chapel in Lluch and the Bluets sing at mass every day. The choir school is world famous and on special days in the church calendar this isolated place in the mountains is visited by thousands to listen to the music and take part in the mass. Lluch offers hospitality and accommodation here in what used to be the priest’s rooms and part of it has become a rural hotel. The road from the mountains leads on to Pollensa and the Port of Pollensa much loved by holiday makers. This is favoured area of English speaking families who return year after year for their children to have their bucket and spade holidays in the wonderful welcoming resorts of this part of the island.
The increase in cycling as a sporting and holiday activity has also centred on the flat terrain of the area between Pollensa and Alcudia. The racing teams from many countries set up their training camps here in the winter and beautiful autumn and winter days are spent enjoying their sport. Formentor is on the northern most point of Mallorca and the end of the west of the Island. The road which links the Port of Pollensa to Formentor was built by the clever engineer – Antonio Parietti who also designed the road to Sa Colobra – much beloved of cyclists. Formentor is the beautiful place where the winds meet and its own micro climate comes into play. The rich and famous make their way to the beauty and isolation of this glorious place or just simply turn up on their yachts. The end of the island it may be but it is the beginning of many a wonderful holiday and a special place for lovers. The Tramuntana is the cement that holds this whole area together. The towns, villages and the City of Soller share much but they are all proud independent places that consider what they have to offer to the visitor is unique. Many of the places on our list have their own Town Halls and their own Mayor and this is very important in the way they view themselves. UNESCO recognised this as a major feature when the area was created a Heritage Site. The respect for the labours of the past that has created the Mallorca you see today is clear in the desire that the people have to continue the improvements that can be left for the next generation.

Petrena Schell Lifestyle, Travel & Radiant Health Mallorca attracts many different people from around the world with fascinating stories and backgrounds. Recently I was lucky enough to meet Petrena Schell through a friend, a Canadian YouTuber that has created and curated a collection of videos for her followers. By Ben Mulvey
Petrena has been spending time in Mallorca for five years having fallen in love with the island after a friend that worked on yachts recommended that she visit Palma instead of France. “Arriving in Palma, I fell in love with the people, the energy, and the culture. Mallorcan people have their own culture and they were so warm and welcoming - I fell in love with it within a week,” says Petrena. Petrena has an infectious energy, a bubbly and upbeat personality and a permanent smile so it is no wonder that she has amassed an army of loyal YouTube followers on her channel. The channel is packed full of videos, many of them filmed in Mallorca, and features Petrena giving her view on various topics, products and places. Petrena’s videos give people from around the world an insider’s guide to the places she visits - a refreshingly honest account of her experiences and of the people she meets. 14 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
Banyalbufar, Petrena’s favourite village on the island, is featured in one video, Valldemossa in another as well as experiences around the island. Aside from her YouTube career, Petrena is a woman of many talents and stories. A public speaker, travel writer and blogger, she is always busy and counts herself lucky to be able to reach so many people in so many places around the world. One of the most fascinating stories she recounted to me was about her travels across Africa which took her just over a year. After leading volunteer projects deep in the jungles of Central and South America, Petrena went back to Canada to work for six months to save money to fulfil her childhood dream of visiting Africa. She booked a ticket to Cape Town and intended to return from Cairo but had no plan as to how she would do it, “I just knew that I would get from point A to point B, and I gave myself three months
to do it. Three months after arriving I was still in South Africa having spent my savings so I decided that to get across the continent to my return flight from Egypt, I needed to do something to continue my dream of travelling around,” she says. Petrena bought a massage table and utilised her massage skills (she is also a professional massage therapist) to barter her way around the continent in exchange for accommodation and transport. She taught women in Zanzibar how to give massages to allow them to earn money from the tourists and towards the end of her travels, she donated the table to a family in Uganda. Throughout her trip, she lugged her table across the continent and was mistaken for a doctor as people had never seen a Western woman on her own with a massage table and became somewhat famous amongst the backpacking community. She settled in each place for a short amount of time and loved learning about the people and communities
PEOPLE
along the way. Shortly after our conversation, Petrena was due to leave Mallorca and head back to Canada before travelling to Africa but ended up, like all of us, in lockdown on the island. We have been chatting throughout this time and Petrena has been keeping her followers updated on her YouTube channel. “I have always felt there is a very special energy here, almost magical. Even
throughout this lockdown, the people of Mallorca have shown what an amazing community they are and how truly resilient this island is. After all of this is over, there will be so many amazing places to once again discover here,” she told me when we last spoke. So, if you are missing the beautiful views and towns on the island, head over to Petrena’s channel on YouTube
for her account on some of her favourite places and keep an eye on her social media for upcoming videos, and of course, the memoir of her travels through Africa. Search ‘Petrena Schell’ on YouTube and keep an eye on the CelebrityMagazineTV YouTube channel or follow @Petrena on Instagram.

design/ Special photo shoot: Celebrate the end of lockdown with a special photoshoot in Mallorca https://mallorcainlove.es/ January also wanted to tell all the people of Mallorca to stay strong and her heart goes out to you all - and to remember we’re all in this together #StayHome #StaySafe In tribute to these trying times January wrote this: An Ode to Mallorca The sun drenched rolling hills of Mallorca bare their soul along the golden summer road. Wind blowing through my hair, the Balearic summer is in the air. How I miss the sound of summer time. From late night cenas under starry nights to the echo of Spanish musica beating from strangers electric hearts. Of all these things but most of all, it’s the people of Mallorca that I miss throughout it all. That endless echo above the mountain walls and glorious sea filled with everlasting charms. Days of isolation bring with it bright fleeting
light and endless fields of glowing sunlight Wandering if all that glimmers is gold then how can one be so afraid of this island mould. They call it the invisible enemy. A virus that has found its way to our island sanctuary Water gleaming and the taste of fresh seafood on my lips - what harm is a little lunch with my beloved, amidst the deserted seaside mist. If only the sky was grey, the mountains stained black and the streets bleached in some ugly shade of dark lilac. But alas, it’s not. The island radiates a beauty that beckons to me, whispering ven aqui con mi It’s Indoors that I remain, all together in our private islands of isolation Reminding ourselves that in two months, one year and forever more Mallorca will once again tower above us all. Until this day, stay strong. Look on but remember it won’t be long until we can drive along that old golden summer road and Mallorca will reach for us to once again call it home. Two Local Charities Help Expat Population The Govern Balear has recognized both Age Concern and Cancer Support Mallorca as COVID 19 registered charities.
What does this mean? They are both able to carry out their activities and assist those in need; their volunteers have authorisation to move about as needed in caring for members of the public who need help. Who are Age Concern and Cancer Support Mallorca? Both charities have been established on the island for many years now. As Age Concern offers care to those over the age of 60 and Cancer Support Mallorca helps expats affected by cancer their paths often cross, therefore over the years they have often worked together in helping local residents. Some of the services they both offer are: • Transport to and translations at hospital/doctors’ visits • General information • Home and hospital visits • Social events and fundraisers • Help processing Spanish and English paperwork • Drop in centers at the local hospitals Age Concern also offers:
• Medical aids for recuperation • Food parcels for the needy • Excursions
20 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
And Cancer Support Mallorca offers: • Nutritional advice • Counselling • Wigs, bandannas, prosthesis, etc. How have both charities adapted to the Covid 19 crisis? • While all drop-in centers have obviously had to close, both charities are offering online help and telephone assistance. These services include: • Counselling • Nutritional advice • Translations over the phone • Changing/obtaining appointments at local surgeries and hospitals • Help processing financial aid offered from the government. • Liaising with social services • Keeping contact with those who are isolated and lonely, a listening ear. • Help with funeral arrangements • And much more... Apart from this, volunteers from both charities are able to: • Deliver shopping • Collect and deliver prescriptions • Organise and deliver food parcels. • In some cases, accompany patients to hospital appointments.
While both charities have their own fields of expertise, they do not want anyone to be left behind, therefore, during these hard times, the services provided are not just for the elderly or those with cancer, but for any expat on the island who needs help. Obviously, as more people contact the charities, more volunteers will be needed. All volunteers are insured and therefore both must receive training. Both charities have put together an online training course so volunteers can start work straight away. If you would like to volunteer, please use the contact information below. Neither charities are state funded, nor do they receive any kind of grants, and they are receiving no extra financial aid for extra work during the crisis, even having to supply all the protection equipment for the volunteers themselves. Therefore, any donations are welcome. Donations to Age Concern Mallorca can be made by transfer into the following account: ES84 0061 0139 0100 9175 0116 (please state you name as reference if you require a receipt). Donations to Cancer Support Mallorca can be made on their website www. cancersupportmallorca.com Please feel free to contact either charity if you need help, between them they will do their best to make sure all your needs are covered. Don’t feel that your problem is too small, even if you just feel lonely and want to chat, they are there for you. 1,000 Miles for Age Concern Mallorca With three weeks of lockdown under our belts the crew of S/Y Kokomo decided to put all of the extra hours of downtime into something positive that could really make a difference amidst so much worry and uncertainty. After doing some research on local charities and organisations they came across Age Concern Mallorca. This non-profit organisation run by volunteers has been based on the island since 1994 and supports the elderly of Mallorca. Their work is needed now more than ever taking food to those who aren’t able to leave the house, checking on their well-being and providing a smiling face from a safe distance to those who may not have the family support that many of us are so lucky to have during these times. As a group S/Y Kokomo crew will be cycling 1,000 miles over 10 days to raise money and awareness for Age Concern. They have setup a ‘Go Fund Me’ page to allow people to donate to their very worthy cause. Every cent makes a euro and every euro goes towards making a difference so we encourage you to donate what you can and spread the word!

They have the use of an office in Hospital Son Espases on Friday mornings in the main hospitalisation building which is manned from 10am to 1pm by volunteers. It is best to make an appointment in the event that they are out visiting patients. During the current COVID-19 crisis the office is closed but Age Concern Mallorca are available by phone on 678-352040
Age Concern Mallorca Started back in 1994, Age Concern Mallorca aims to improve wellbeing for those over 60, assisting in making sure that daily life is sustainable and adaptable as their circumstances change over time. They also offer help in many other ways, and if they are unable to assist, they will endeavour to direct enquiries to the best point of contact. In order to raise much needed funds Age Concern participate in bazaars and fairs selling homemade jams and marmalades and other items. They do not have a charity shop but have a vehicle which allows for travel around the island. Would you like to connect with Age Concern Mallorca? GUCCI LASHES
RITA ORA FOR DEICHMANN
I get it, that eyelashes make one’s eyes “pop”. I use fake eyelashes regularly, but what I’m NOT going to do is stick them on my eyebrows. Nevertheless, this is what fashion brands are doing to their poor models right now, for some reason. I really don’t get it. Gucci’s Spring 2020 Catwalk Show featured just that, as the models walked the runway wearing fake lashes applied directly on top of their brows. Apparently, it was makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver’s idea. Now, anyone with taste should utterly adore Gucci, in fact, I admire all of their work, but this is madness. Are people really so “out of ideas” that they resort to such silly “hacks”? Surely the clothes speak for themselves? The models were all laid with lashes in a surreal and fake style. Suffice to say, some of these models simply look mad. I bet some were angry, because this is crossing the line into “weird” territory. I’m not saying that these models look all bad. Of course not, they are gorgeous but a tarantula on the face doesn’t look pretty to me, so I’m going to pass on trying it at home. Fashion is getting exhausting these days. I can’t wait for someone to use nail polish as lipstick.
Rita Ora has announced her second collection for Deichmann and I want it all! The new collection, “Colour Up”, will be available from this week in selected stores and online at www.deichmann.com. following the success of Ora’s previous Autumn/Winter collaboration, last year. Under the slogan “Colour Up”, Rita’s collection will feature bold colours and cool details. It features 35 styles, showcasing the season’s latest trends under five main themes; chunky trainers, metallics, glam heels, platforms and strappy sandals. I’m loving the colour block trainers, with embossed soles and metallic trim for easy casual wear, the white sling backs for a modern look, and even croc-effect loafers for a chic finishing touch to summer outfits. If that wasn’t enough, the collection is perfect for summer with flat sandals in statement colours and glamorous wedges, eye-catching heels, platform sandals, pumps with a patent or animal-print finish and strappy sandals in pastel shades. Rita Ora, comments, “I’m delighted to be teaming up with Deichmann once again. It was great fun to create a fantastic, colourful collection that encourages people to be strong and believe in themselves.” The Rita Ora for Deichmann is available in store and online at www.deichmann. com now, with prices ranging from 30 – 40 Euros. 22 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA

THE POUT IS OUT
London Fashion Week designer bans pouting on his runway – to encourage people to smile more. When we think of models walking down the runway, chances are you envisage a series of tall, glamorous women fiercely pouting and looking serious. But designer Richard Quinn has knocked this on the head for his Autumn/Winter 2020 collection – instructing the models to crack a smile whilst showcasing his designs. For his London Fashion Week show, the designer teamed up with Colgate toothpaste – the official sponsor of LFW – to make his catwalk a “pout free” space. In the run-up to the show, models had been trialling Max White Ultimate Whitening toothpaste – which I use too – surprising audience members by flashing their dazzling white smiles, instead of the traditional pouts usually seen on the catwalk. Richard isn’t the only one determined to turn frowns upside down. Recent Colgate research found that 40 per cent of women avoid smiling in photos, and I have to say I hate my smile too. Paradoxically, despite this stat, half of those polled said that a smile is the first thing they notice about someone. So, get the toothpaste out, and remember this year’s biggest fashion trend is to smile. Just find your best side and angle.
SLUIZ IBIZA ONLINE Imagine IKEA on acid with an Ibiza flavour, and you have the best shop on earth – Sluiz. I discovered Sluiz Ibiza years ago, and not only did it recreate itself in Palma Mallorca, now it’s finally online for the whole world to grab a piece of quirky magic. I used to buy so much of the crazy homewares and fashion from this insane shop that I’d have to purchase another suitcase just to lug it all back to London. As well as wearing at least three Sluiz hats on the plane and carrying their bags on every available limb. For years, the plane was the only way of getting Sluiz stuff home London. However, now we can get Sluiz’s unique boho fashion and accessories delivered to wherever we are in the world. The blue cows hanging from the trees outside Sluiz Ibiza and the doormat saying ‘F**K OFF’ at the Palma store both point to the craziness that’s inside. Their car park in Ibiza has parking signs to help you position your vehicle, with parking sections such as Big Boobs, ADHD, Gold-digger and Dr Dre, to name but a few. Sluiz stocks the most jaw dropping collection of the beautiful, curious, wonderful, strange and the bizarre. But for me, it’s their collections of Spanish and worldwide independent designer clothing that makes Sluiz such a special shop. The colours and vibrancy strike you first. From rainbow striped silk kaftans to pink faux fur coats, to yellow fedoras and purple Vivienne Westwood heels – these are just a few of the items I have bought from Sluiz. If you’re in Ibiza, eat at the adjoining Sluiz café and you’ll soon realise that literally every section of the giant store is crammed with creepy china dolls, batty oil paintings, massive doll’s feet sticking through the ceiling, china teacups and ornate gold chairs. Yes, craziness and theatre permeates the whole place. The same quirkiness is scattered throughout Sluiz in Palma too. From the condoms to slightly altered well-known brands, such as Adildo, Tommy Middlefinger, Dolce&Banana and Suckers, through to their changing rooms entitled Sperm Bank and Bleached Anus. Suffice to say, Sluiz will have you sniggering quietly like naughty schoolgirl. But, more than anything, they have nailed Balearic Boho chic, and now you can buy the latest collections online. Their quirky bags and satin jumpsuits are a must for 2020.

Island Spirit by Arizona Bell
The Art of Transmutation in Trying Times It’s safe to say that 2020 is shaping up to be a year we won’t forget any time soon! Many of us are grieving the relaxedyet-exciting way of life we’ve long enjoyed on this beautiful island right about now. But while we might daydream about life going back to the way it used to be, it’s clear now that this is not about going back to yesterday but creating a new and better tomorrow. No doubt, from the personal to the local to the global levels, feelings of fear, grief, and confusion abound at this current point in history. There is no argument that this is the most uncomfortable time most of us have ever lived in. Yet during this uncertain era we are entering into, I have been reminding myself of the massive benefits that come from seemingly ‘dark times’. I learned on a personal level long ago that it is in our darkest moments where we are given the opportunity to shine the brightest. The hardest time in my life was the death of my mother—I thought I wouldn’t survive it. Yet now, five years later, I can confidently tell you that experiencing such deep despair has been the great gift of my life. Why? Because it taught me the art of transmutation—and once we learn that, life becomes that much easier and we that much happier. Transmutation is the state of a thing being changed into another form. As it applies to this global pandemic, we are collectively being asked to alchemise our default fearbased thinking into a more expansive lovebased thinking. And there is no better place to perfect that alchemical process than in quiet solitude—just ask the monks and sages since time memorial! So, while this shutdown might seem extremely inconvenient on the surface, I have come to honor this unprecedented time as an opportunity for us to evolve as a species, elevating our collective consciousness and bringing us all closer to the vibrations of love, joy, and compassion.
If you find yourself slipping into the energy of fear, here are some quarantine-friendly ways you can transmute that energy into love: create something, volunteer your services, journal, dance, pray, meditate, make a list of what you are grateful for, invest your time in random acts of kindness! All these things recalibrate us to the higher vibration of love. Staying committed to transmutation during this uncertain time is our collective calling right now. I encourage you to recall the spiritual axiom “As Above, So Below” and to look to the stars for inspiration. Without that deep, dark backdrop that the stars are contrasted against, they would never shine so bright and we would never see their beauty so clear. It’s our job, now, to learn how to sparkle—not in spite of the darkness, but because of it!

Palma Hat Week
Something to look forward to... From 19 to 25 October 2020 the Palma Hat Week will take place for the second time in Palma de Mallorca. Celebrity Magazine Mallorca is proud to be a media partner for 2020. Look out for lots of updates and build up before the 19th October and of course lots of pictures from the event afterwards both in print and through our online channels.
Last August, the event featured around 50 international hatmakers who presented a total of 125 hat creations in a week-long hat exhibition. In the first round of the Palma Hat Week, which traditionally revolves around the theme of hats, the organisers, the entrepreneur couple Judith and Karl von Kinsky, did not miss the opportunity to personally guide the participants through a week full of exciting events. Besides workshops for hat makers and those who wanted to become hat makers, there was also a hat excursion through the centre of Palma down to the docks with various photo sessions, among others on the sunny roof terrace of the luxury “Hotel Saratoga” in Passeig de Mallorca 6, from where the 26 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
hat promenade started. While in the middle of the week it was still assumed that the highlight of the Palma Hat Week would be the common photo session with the Mallorca Oldtimer Club and its many fantastic old and youngtimers, but one was quickly taught a better lesson when the “Dames de trot” of the Hipodromo Palma organised a perfect “Ladies Day” at the horse races to end Palma Hat Week. All material prizes for the winning horses were personally endowed by Count Kinsky. The Palma Hat Week guests had a VIP area in the garden with a direct view of the race track. The Palma Hat Week had almost 2000 visitors in its inauguration year giving a good reason to present it once again. The Palma Hat Week promises to be as, if not more attractive
this year with special features, such as, the Count exhibiting a part of his considerable private art collection alongside the Palma Hat Fairs international hat exhibition. Besides the Palma Hat Week, there will also be the Palma Hat Fair (a small fair for exhibitors from the fields of art, gemstone, fashion and of course hats and hat supplies, are expected to come. For hat makers, there will again be countless photo sessions, to which the public as well as the Press is invited. The motto this year is: “The 50 Shadows of White”. We can look forward to an unforgettable hat exhibition and fair in the luxurious Hotel Saratoga in Passeig de Mallorca 6 in October. The fair and hat exhibition is open to visitors daily from 11am to 8pm, free admission!

Olives: Mediterranean Gold Local fruit for longevity
by
The plateau above the north coast of Mallorca, between Valldemossa and Deià have, for many centuries, been the island’s centre of olive cultivation as soils are rich in lime and thus ideal or the trees. By Stephanie Horsman
Although olive trees can reach the impressive age of 1,500 years, it’s the younger plants that yield the most: they start bearing fruit after four to ten years, getting less and less productive once they are in their seventies There are three species of olives native to Mallorca: the Arbequina, the Picual and the Mallorquina, also called the Empeltre. Harvested between October and January, it’s the still green, unripe olives that are harvested first, followed later in the season by the black, ripened fruit. Traditionally produced olives are always picked by hand to ensure the least amount of damage to their skins. Back-breaking work, to be sure, but well worth it in the end as Mallorcan farmers take pride not just in the taste, but in the beauty of the fruit they produce. Biggerscale producers nowadays use harvesting machines that grip the trees around the stem and give it a good shake, a procedure that might look a bit tough on the trees but that is also gentle on the fruit.
The Curing
Fresh from the tree, olives are hard and bitter and must be cured to make them edible, so the olives offered on the markets now are from last winter’s harvest. Basically, however, there are two methods: Water curing for green olives where the fruit are placed in a pan of water which is regularly exchanged until the bitterness is removed. They are then conserved in brine, a “saturated” salt water solution which is perfect and ready for use
when a raw egg swims on the surface. For black olives, the method of choice is dry salt curing: In big glass jars, layers of olives are alternated with coarse sea salt to absorb the bitterness and juices. Then, for both green and black, follows the spicing, and, well … each farmer has, over time, developed their own methods and they know how to keep a secret..
Buying at the Market
Tradition dictates green olives are conserved in brine, rather than vinegar and water, but both variants can now be found at the local markets. To have the real experience, try to go for the ones made with brine, and if you like a little something extra, try the ones infused with fennel and chili peppers. Before adding the additional flavours, the olives are pressed gently, so they break slightly open allowing the flavours to penetrate more easily. What do they taste like? Heaven! The green are slightly sharper than their juicy and salty black counterparts. Both are fantastic snacks and hardly a drink is served on the island without a plate of olives para picar, as the locals say.
namely the spittlebug, and it does not only affect olive trees, but also almond and other fruit trees and grape vines all over Europe. Read more about the dangers and possible cures that are presently being investigated on our website www.affordablemallorca. com.
Enjoy Now!
With this disquieting news in mind, better not waste any time. This good-for-you fruit is such a tasty treat you’ll be proud to have on your table. Plus, buying them has the added bonus of supporting local agriculture. So, the next time you’re at a market, don’t forget the olives!
Olive Trees in Danger
In recent years, Mallorcan farmers have had reason to be worried about their olive harvest. Xylella fastidiosa, a deadly bacterial disease that currently has no cure has reached the Balearics. It is spread by insects, CELEBRITY MALLORCA | 29

Dog and Cat Owners We´re So Lucky! By Ben Mulvey
Anyone who has a dog or cat in this state of crisis and lockdown knows how lucky we are. Having a dog enables us to go out for a little walk, but the emotional, physical and general health benefits of owning a dog and cat are huge. We knew it before but now it has become even more evident during the isolation. Scientists have been studying the health benefits for physical and emotional health for many years and it is well proven that we are happier and healthier if we have a pet, but now our neighbours know it too! Even the dogs and cats are happier; with their owners at home, as they get more walks and more affection whilst we sit on the sofa and watch films together. Although we have these advantages we still have to take special care with our pets. 1. Try and keep to a routine. They like stability - walks and feeding times. Also don`t get tempted to give them leftovers and different foods, because this can lead to tummy upsets.

Real Mallorca - Back in the big time After successive promotions the team has an uphill battle ahead
Celebrity Football Roundup with Alex Fitzpatrick
ISLAND LIFE - GRAEME LE SAUX Graeme Le Saux enjoyed a glittering playing career in which he lifted the Premier League trophy with Blackburn and experienced cup glory with Chelsea. The left-back represented England on 36 occasions, including at the 1998 World Cup in France. Le Saux now has the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of his successful football career through his long retirement from the game and has chosen to do so by owning a home on the island. The ex-footballer is no stranger to Mallorca, having visited for over 20 years, or to island living; “(Local) people have been saying that they are Mallorquin and: ‘we live on an island’, and I’m like; ‘yeah, so do I’. I used to live in Jersey, I grew up in Jersey. I have exactly the same understanding having grown up on an island.” Le Saux may be in retirement but he certainly isn’t putting his feet up, working for American television in punditry and also consulting with Real Mallorca, although his role is vague, joking; “Don’t ask the owners, because they will probably say they don’t know either!” The Channel Islander is on the board of the club and
describes his role as trying to “add my perspective on how we can create a really successful, sustainable football club.” Without any previous experience in football consultancy, Le Saux’s involvement may have come as a surprise to many. However, his connections to the island as well as his transatlantic media links were crucial in his appointment to the role. “The opportunity came along because people that know the owners and Steve [Nash], (Kyle Martino, Stuart Holden) work with me on NBC. When the owners were looking at buying the club, he remembered that I have a connection with Mallorca. That’s how it all started, a discussion around: ‘okay, you know Mallorca”. Opportunity knocked but timing is also often crucial. Success in football is measured on the pitch and Mallorca could not have had a more successful last two years, with successive promotions from the depths of the regional third tier of Spanish football to the pinnacle, La Liga. Transforming the lowest ebb in the club’s history, the relegation to Segunda B, into their current position was no mean feat. “You see the passion of the fans is back. Success and what happens on the pitch
is obviously the key driver, but if you can support that and reinforce that through the relationship with the supporters, there have already been some magic moments.” As you would expect for a successful international footballer, settling for anything but the best just isn’t in Le Saux’s vernacular. “Everything I look at is what can we do to improve? How can we get better? What is the next step? That is across all of the football part of the business and I hope that I can continue to add value.” La Liga that has been temporarily suspended as the world battles against coronavirus but the fans of Real Mallorca will certainly hope that Le Saux can continue to add that value of which he speaks as they find themselves in the middle of a battle against relegation. “It’s up to us, and I don’t mean us on the board, it’s up to everyone to ensure that this momentum that we have, this togetherness we have, is maintained.“ When Mallorca get to rekindle the momentum their season had started to gather is anyone’s guess, but the recent departure of CEO Maheta Molango means that it is safe to say that Le Saux will be there on the side lines for some time yet. *With thanks to the official ‘Play Red’ RCD Mallorca podcast for providing the quotes used in this article.

BEAUTY
Lipstick vs Lockdown Will Mallorca’s wedding industry be left standing at the altar? Arriving late to the world of makeup artistry, I had held down many a ‘sensible’ job since leaving university but had never felt the real sense of fulfilment that I wanted from my career. I knew that the empowerment of the amazing women I saw all around me was what really motivated me, but it wasn’t until I connected this with my love of makeup that the lightbulb moment occurred that led me to go on to train in this creative and rewarding field.
N
ow, years later, my job is my privilege. As a bridal makeup artist and a specialist in natural styling, I work with my brides to create a signature look that will stand the test of time. It is my job to see and to showcase her individual beauty so that this woman knows as she walks down that aisle that she is the most beautiful thing in that moment in time - no mean feat on an island this spellbinding! Having moved to Mallorca in the summer of 2018, I am a relative newcomer to the wedding industry here, and what an industry it is. I was made to feel immediately welcome by other wedding vendors and ‘competitors’ alike, and I firmly believe it is this unfailing spirit of teamwork that underpins Mallorca’s wedding industry as such a unique and special service. Through their own area of expertise every supplier is resolute in providing weddings of distinction. Weddings that, irrespective of budget, exude quality, individuality, authenticity and that effortless romanticism

that only balmy Mallorca evenings can provide. My first full wedding season in Mallorca was a (very good) dream, but an abrupt and rude awakening came when, in March of this year, the world fell silent and all industry came to a standstill in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Many of my brides whose weddings were scheduled for early in the season have already been forced to postpone to 2021 and beyond, and it has been heartbreaking to hear their sadness and disappointment as they push back for another year the big day that they have waited and worked so hard for. No one can deny there will inevitably be difficult economic times ahead for us all. However, my optimistic mind tells me that, with such unrivalled natural beauty and quality of service, the wedding industry on this truly special island will blossom again. With many nuptials being rescheduled from 2020 to 2021, and new interest for 2021 still forthcoming, could this concertina-like
effect mean a bumper year for Mallorca weddings? My prediction: A cautiously optimistic yes. I do believe that 2021 will see a resounding comeback of couples with their heart’s set on tying the knot in one of the most romantic (and exclusive) locations in the world and that in turn Mallorca’s wedding suppliers, ever committed and resourceful, will ensure that every vow, every toast, and every happy tear is accommodated. PULL UP A CHAIR As I write this, pretty much the whole world has come to a standstill and life is not quite the same and may not be for a while. As a “glass is half full” kind of girl, I like to think about now as a ‘time out’ for Mother Nature - a ‘spring break’ and ‘yoga retreat’ combination where she has some time to let loose, rejuvenate and relax! Wherever you are in the world, you have most likely experienced some restrictions and even as we come out of lockdown many of these will stay in place. Gyms are a big hole in many of our lives right now as we love to train and find that the feeling after is unbeatable. So why is it so hard to motivate yourself to train at home? The three main reasons given are the following: space, lack of equipment and the know-how. Well as Del says, “Stick with me Rodders and you will go far!” It’s time to pull up a chair and get moving! First, let’s talk about space. You actually don’t need lots to train - if you have a place to stand you have a place to sweat. You can also train without equipment. Try running, skipping and jumping on the spot to a timer or for a set amount of reps. If you prefer a low impact workout you can squat, lunge and kick. Use your own body weight as resistance against itself with push-ups. There are variations for all abilities with full body weight, on your knees, or for beginners,
they can try against a wall. Try planking too - there are so many variations to work your whole body, keep you interested and push yourself as you get stronger. Just remember to hold that core in and make sure there are no bums in the air!
guaranteed to do the job!
Wall sits are also great and if you want to add an extra dimension to your session, add weights for your upper body. You will find alternative weights in your kitchen - why not try tinned foods or even and water bottles? Chairs, tables and stairs also add a whole new world to your training options. With variations on step-ups, tricep-dips, pushups, abs and more. So how do you know what to do? There are so many amazing trainers and most offer free sample workouts with instructions. Instagram for me is the best so here’s my go-to list for all training preferences and abilities: @tay_macfit This amazing trainer is a mum with the nicest nature and is like a breath of fresh air with workouts that are easy to follow and
@steph.derby-fitness Core-based and controlled training that will have you shaking and sweating.
@ginavellesfit Hardcore outside of the box training, full-on and insane! You never know what is coming but you know it’s going to be good.
@krissycela From the UK a real inspiration for the younger trainer and a great role model for all aspects of training and body image. @msjeanettejenkins Jeanette for me is like the “Don” of fitness, the “Queen” of workouts, whether its cardio, high impact, low impact, HIIT, abs you name it... She has it all in her back pocket! Her energy alone is guaranteed to make you sweat! @msjeanettejenkins Jeanette for me is like the “Don” of fitness, the “Queen” of workouts. Whether it’s cardio, high impact, low impact, HIIT, or abs, she has it all in her back pocket! Her energy alone is guaranteed to make you sweat! Here in Mallorca we also have so many talented trainers so why not follow them and then once normality resumes you can also train with them for real! @joselee_castillo, @fitclubmallorca @mark_anthony_fitness, @fit4lifemallorca, @activeatlas, @francescafox13, @crossfitmallorca, @bodyandmindmallorca, @lightning_lloyd, @elasko_mallorca So remember no excuses, pull up a chair and do not sit in it till the workout is done!

GENTLEMEN DRIVING MALLORCA
For obvious reasons, there is little to talk about on the Boats, Bikes and Automobiles theme - for six weeks now, none of them can be ridden, used or driven for pleasure. However, with no events or social gatherings possible, we’ve been busy relaunching Driving Mallorca as an SL company on an international basis under its new name, Gentlemen Driving Mallorca, not in any disrespect to our many female members but as a nod to the Club’s new emphasis on visiting European race tracks for track days – ‘Gentlemen Drivers’ being the strictly amateur third driver required for international endurance sports car racing. It is becoming a great networking forum for those swapping ideas, passions and contacts - and the practical opportunity to take your car onto circuits all over Europe with the provisional calendar available at the Club’s new website: www.gentlemendriving.com
MALLORCA RALLY CLASICO Just before the shutters came down on the world as we know it, the 16th installment of the Mallorca Rally Clasico took place from its usual home base at Puerto Portals in early March, acting both as the Parc Ferme for the event and as the epicenter of the social gatherings around it – and doesn’t that feel a long time ago?! 34 | CELEBRITY MALLORCA
The Rally Clasico Mallorca is one of the very best annual closed road rallies taking place anywhere in Europe, not least because of the stunning island backdrop and the 13 stages that pass through it – mostly in the Tramuntana. It was therefore a great shame that the final day along with the famous closing party had to be cancelled, although with enough of the rally having been run to produce a result.
The machinery was as glorious and eclectic as always – from beautiful and very valuable classics to contemporary rally cars, plus the usual mob of noisy Germans in their ubiquitous and spectacular 911s. It was great to see the ex-Formula One driver, Adrian Campos in the Paddock and to have Jay Kay from Jamiroquai fame blatting around in a rally-spec BMW. The event will be back next year and we can only look forward to that. As frustrating as this is for those that enjoy doing this sort of thing, everyone’s thoughts are quite reasonably focused on the wider issues and gaining a perspective on what the future holds in so many different areas.

COVID-19 AND THE BALEARIC ISLANDS A huge frustration in the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic – albeit with Spain as a nation having the worst figures in Europe - remains to treat all regions of the country with the same blunt tool that has been deemed appropriate for the worst hit areas of Madrid, particularly with regard to locking up energetic children, the healthy old and banning any kind of outside exercise even if done individually. Unlike Madrid, the Canary and Balearic archipelagos depend almost entirely on international tourism and aside from some of the larger hotels, these are islands of small independent businesses – coffee and booze bars, restaurants, boutique clothing outlets, tourist-tat shops etc – and
throughout this crisis, each island region has had some of the lowest infection rates in the country. There is nothing in the way of manufacturing or big business here and one can only hope that Old Town Palma will not look like it currently does under lockdown – roller shutters and graffiti – for years to come. If the cure for these islands becomes so much bigger than the problem it is aiming to solve, it will be devastating on every level – as the tourism, property development and marine industries all go down the pan. A very long month ago, with few infections and our superb health infrastructure, I asked if the islands could become some sort of inversion of a 19th century offshore leper colony – where everyone is healthy and free to move around, stay mentally sane, physically fit and live as normal a life as possible - and to keep a degree of the local economy intact but with
the back-up medical capacity designed to accommodate 10 million tourists a year JUST IN CASE… Of course, for anyone who would prefer to stay home – most obviously those with underlying health conditions - they are quite welcome to do so. But if anywhere was right for trialing herd immunity over what can occasionally border on herd hysteria, this is the place. Having said that, it still sounds as if regional variations are likely, as some Covid-19 wards close down on the island due to there being no demand for them. We go into May, there is some light in the tunnel for being finally able to get outside and exercise. My admiration goes to everyone who has somehow found a way through this and to allow yourselves some solace that at some stage, it’ll be over even if life after it won’t quite be the same for a considerable period of time yet.

CELEBRITY MALLORCA MAGAZINE HOMES & PROPERTIES
Property Market Update IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS!
It seems a lifetime since the last Celebrity Magazine issue and I feel I’ve somehow fallen through a wormhole into an altered reality and another world altogether! Italy in Lockdown, then Spain, followed by France, the UK and the USA following slowly behind due to the Coronavirus. Boris Johnson was nearly a casualty by all accounts and we haven’t seen the peak of it yet, certainly not in the USA. Unprecedented, with the global economy in chaos. With a swift Spanish response, the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera have had consistently one of the lowest infection rates in the Kingdom of Spain. At the time of writing (April 21), we have 1808 reported patients testing positive (obviously the figure is likely to be higher than this as many with minor symptoms will be at home) with 161 deaths. The Balearics appear to have locked their borders in good time and the measures taken have limited the spread. The infrastructure of the Balearics can also comfortably accommodate more than double the current population and there has been little feeling of panic amongst residents, aside from the initial mass hysteria over toilet paper, by no means unique in Spain. The supermarket shelves have been replenished and the 10 private and public hospitals were all on standby and well prepared. Schools are shut and have arranged for internet-based teaching and home
schooling. The ports and airports are lockeddown, with only essential repatriation and transport of food, medical and energy supply guaranteed by law. There is now a solid €200 billion relief package in place for Spain and we have flattened the curve locally with great success. Who would ever have believed it at the end of last year?! The Possible Impact on the Real Estate Market in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands The Balearic Islands have been a favoured destination for mainland Spain and Europe for decades past. The strong protection measures of its natural environment, conserving vast stretches of beautiful natural habitat considering the size of the islands, continues to attract the wealthy, rich and famous from near and far - and will continue to do so despite this current hiatus. Past financial crises cannot be compared to this unprecedented global health crisis but we, as real estate agents, are confident of the resilience of the Mallorca and Balearic Real Estate Market in general. The volatility of the stock markets and looming economic downturn will no doubt impact the property market, as will the delays in opening our boarders to external travellers. However the realisation that through Covid-19, we should not take life as we have known it for granted, may well reflect a new increase in demand for real estate investment opportunities in the Balearic Islands. On a domestic level, the Covid-19 lockdown will have highlighted the negative aspects of homes with little or no outdoor space, particularly in the city centre. We anticipate an influx of properties at the lower end filling the marketplace in a rush to exchange for homes with courtyards, gardens, terraces or roof terraces, with more versatile working and living spaces. Not to mention an increase in the number of divorces brought on by the enforced family quarantine, as well as the inevitable baby boom on new ‘Coronials’ coming into the world in 2021 (remember you heard that term here first)!!! One thing I do believe in is that this time of the Coronavirus can present an opportunity for us all. We are all bearing witness to how our planet, Mother Earth is benefiting by this globally enforced incarceration. Skies are clearing, waters cleansing, nature free to roam, fish free to
spawn and their depleted stocks replenishing. The negative impact we humans cause in our ecosystems is having time to regenerate - She is breathing, healing, thriving. It is time for us all to learn to slow down, take stock and appreciate Mother Earth. As Coronavirus is leaving its mark across the world, we are definitely witnessing a shift in attitudes - it is reminding us to hold life sacred. To hold life sacred is not just to live long, but to live well and right and fully. Should we not take this opportunity to widen our lens and examine the entire systems in place? As Covid-19 stirs compassion and awareness, more and more of us are waking up to the realisation that we don’t want to go back to a normal so sorely lacking it. We have the opportunity now to forge a new, more environmentally and wellness conscious norm. According to Go Contractor the construction sector alone contributes to 23% of air pollution, 50% of the climatic change, 40% of drinking water pollution, and 50% of landfill waste. Concrete is the second most widely used material in the world (after water), and if the industry was a country, it would be the third largest carbon dioxide emitter in the world: its 2.8bn tonnes are surpassed only by China and America. I implore our governments, and our developers and builders, to learn from this. There are exhaustive lists of building materials that are sustainable, renewable, eco-friendly - and sometimes all three. Their advantages are many: more long-lasting, improving indoor air quality, good thermal mass and optimising operation and maintenance - cutting down costs long term for both the constructor and the consumer. Let’s take this opportunity to fast track the Balearic Islands Green Manifesto plans for 2050 and ask our Governments to incentivise developers and purchasers to invest in greener building technologies and renewable energies. Let’s make Mallorca and the Balearic Islands a leader in sustainable and green construction for our land, our peoples and our future. Sending best wishes to you all. Keep your distance, wash your hands and phones, appreciate your loved ones and keep safe. Amanda J Butler – an holistic approach to real estate in Mallorca.
