RAFAEL NADAL BOY AND MAN by Laura Stadler

Rafael Nadal, boy and man. I have observed every step of his extraordinary transformation from the fresh-faced junior tennis talent, to the leaping powerhouse electrifying crowds sporting his unique pirate garb, to respected ‘veteran’. The oldest French Open Champion, joint record holder of 20 Grand Slam Titles with over 1,000 ATP victories. Indeed, the youth I first interviewed in 2002 has become the finest ambassador, not only for his sport, but his much-loved home of Mallorca. In fact, the pride of Spain. Throughout Rafa has displayed the welladjusted, courteous manner that has made him admired by press and adored by fans. The perfect role model of his solid Mallorcan family upbringing. I have watched him during his post-match interviews. Hair still wet from the shower, studying his match statistics. Always humble in victory and gracious in even the bitterest of defeats. Never have I heard him cite injury after a loss. Even if it later transpires, he was indeed in pain. He will always credit his opponent to playing better on the day. ‘That’s sport’ he’ll say with a shrug. His battle back from serious injury nothing short of miraculous, and highlights not only his love of tennis, but his ambition, passion and focus on being the best. While other top sportsmen have made homes in tax havens, Rafa has been content to give back to the island he loves, remaining happiest at home with his roots. To complete the picture, last year he married his girlfriend of 13 years, the beautiful Xisca Perello who runs his Rafael Nadal Foundation. I was privileged to have been afforded an exclusive interview. His answers illustrating his wisdom, compassion and well- adjusted humility. When I first interviewed you as a 16-yearold boy after your Junior Wimbledon semi-final, did you imagine you would still be playing the highest standard of tennis, making and breaking records aged 34? It would be very arrogant of me to say I am achieving what I expected when I

was 16. At that age, I only wanted to be a professional tennis player and to win one tournament someday. My dream was to win Wimbledon, and I managed to do that for the first time in 2008. A lot has happened, good results wise, since that first interview when I was 16, and I have to say I am very thankful to life. I never expected to achieve even half of what I am achieving. Your Excellency Don Rafael Nadal, what were your emotions when you first heard you had been awarded the highest honour of The Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit? I haven’t really thought much about it to be honest. I am very happy with my day to day life, with my family, my team and my friends. Very thankful also to this latest honour I have received from the Spanish government and the King.

Winning your 20th Grand Slam title with such focus and so few unforced errors, even winning the championship with an ace, was such a huge achievement. Especially after our Spanish lockdown prevented you from playing tennis for so long. Do you think that the complete break from tennis was able to heal your body and enable you to return to top form? Thanks for your kind words. I believe that the lockdown has not benefited anyone except for the purpose of trying to stop the spread of the virus. I don’t think that it has benefited anyone in the tennis world, and it was difficult, together with preparing for the unknown. But in the end with a clear goal, we managed to work properly, avoiding injuries and adapting to the needs. In my case when the body stops for a long time it definitely doesn’t help, and I had to do CELEBRITY | 5

A few journalists were invited to interview Rafa at his tournament home before his exciting first Wimbledon final against Roger Federer in 2006. When Rafa spotted me standing he immediately gave up his comfy chair and insisted I sit. Of course I told him I was fine, but he wouldn’t hear of it, plonking himself down on the floor for the interview. I was so touched by such a gentlemanly gesture in one so young. He would not sit while I was standing. Photo by Laura Stadler

a great deal of pre-tournament work in order to regain, not only my physical condition, but also my tennis. I am sure if you ask all players they would give you different opinions, especially based on age. How did you keep fit during lockdown? How did you pass your time? I suppose like everyone else. In my case it was difficult since I am a very active person, and to be in an apartment without being able to exercise much, and do the things I am used to doing, was not easy. So, I dedicated time to do things to help people in need. The campaign we did with Pau Gasol and the Spanish Red Cross was significant and took some time that normally I wouldn’t have. We were very happy with its success, and the money we managed to collect for the people in need. I also had some time to do things at home, such as cooking and baking. I believe what we all did! Would you consider in the future taking Federer’s route of not playing all events to maintain points, and choosing only certain championships to take part in order to rest your body more? I am already playing the tournaments I need to play. Not that we can choose that much since there are mandatory events. Obviously, this year has been an exception. I believe that we have been very lucky, since we can play and do what we enjoy, which is to compete. Some others are not as lucky as we are. But to your point, I am already playing those events we consider are the ones I should be playing in order to allow my career to continue.

I know your return to top form after injury has been an inspiration to Andy Murray who is battling to find his form. Have you been able to speak to him to offer advice? I haven’t spoken much to him lately, and I know he is fighting hard to come back to the top of his level. It is never easy after such serious surgery. But the fact that he is fighting and coming back shows his love for the game and his passion for our sport. I have seen your new yacht. Your catamaran is magnificent. The boating industry is so important to Mallorca. Why do you think people enjoy sailing so much in Mallorca? I believe we have the perfect conditions for boating. A beautiful sea, an astounding coastline plus fantastic weather. We are definitely very lucky with what nature has given us. Where are your favourite places to sail your boat? I like to sail everywhere around the Balearics. I have been lucky to travel to Sardinia that I also found beautiful. One day I would love to see all the places in the Mediterranean Sea. Do you have any favourite restaurants to stop? Yes, I love to go to Sa Punta in Mallorca. I find the spot magnificent and the food is also excellent. I love fish and shellfish and there I can always find the best of the best. How would you describe your perfect day in Mallorca? It all depends on what I have to do. Meaning if I have to work, practice or not. But it is not a secret that I love the sea. So, going out on a boat is one of my favourites. But it is also not

6 | CELEBRITY

a secret that I love golf, and we are very lucky to have very good golf courses in the island. A combination of that, together with being with my wife, family and friends makes a perfect day for me. I have been following 12-year-old Mallorcan Junior player Selena Romero ranked 3 worldwide. Do you feel Mallorca will be well represented in tennis in the future? I am sure that Spanish tennis and Balearic tennis will always find good players. We have a good tradition, as well as amazing facilities. I must talk about the Rafa Nadal Academy that I believe has everything to help players, and particularly young players, to become better people as well as better players. When you look back on 2020, when you have spent so much more time on our beautiful island with your family, how will you personally remember the positives of this year? The positives are that the closest to me are safe and okay, and none suffered badly from the pandemic. First for me is the health of my people, always. Then we all know it’s been a year not to be happy with. A year where a lot of people have died, and a year that will bring negative consequences for the future. So, no, not that many good memories of 2020. *Front cover photo by Renaud Corlouer A pensive Rafa displaying his much-discussed custom made Richard Mille watch, the face innovatively like a tennis racquet. It is said to cost over a million dollars with only 50 available worldwide.

‘THERE’S NOTHING LIKE OMAR’

Omar has been delivering his unique sound since his first album and hit single of the same title, ‘There’s Nothing Like This’ was released on his father Byron’s label, Kongo Records, in 1985 and then re-issued by Gilles Peterson on his Talkin’ Loud imprint in 1991. Eight albums in and still going strong, I caught up with the UK soul man over the phone for a chat and to get some answers to the questions I had sent to him previously via email, which his manager had already suggested that he would prefer to do by phone. It just shows you how this legend likes to connect not only through his music but personally too. I reminded Omar of the time we met back in the mid-2000s at Windmill Studio in London when I was

8 | CELEBRITY

recording with his producer friend and studio owner Jerry. Omar showed nothing but encouragement and love towards the track Jerry and I were recording. I never got to tell him how much that meant to me until now. THANK YOU! Omar was born in Balham, London and moved to Kent at the age of six, only to return back to London to continue his music studies and gain a degree in music. When you discover that Omar is a multitalented instrumentalist (piano, bass, drums, horns, voice) and has trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and toured live with a band, you get a clearer understanding of his longevity in this everchanging business.

Before we got into the Q&A section he tells me that it’s pouring down with rain in London, and I tell him it’s sunshine and blue skies here in Mallorca. His enthusiasm doesn’t wane one bit. Your remake of The Stranglers “Golden Brown” was incredible! You complemented what was already the perfect song. Did you ever meet the band? And did they ever mention your version of the song? “Yes, and I was told it was their favourite remake of the song and that meant the world to me.” Omar has received an MBE for his services to the British Music Industry, and rightfully so. I asked him to tell me what his reaction was when he received the letter, which the Prime Minister sends out with the royal seal on the back of the envelope. I also asked, who was the first person you told? “I had just arrived back home from Ghana (Africa) when I received the letter. As I opened it, I had to do a double-take as I read that her Majesty would like to ask you, if you would like to receive the MBE. I was touched by this because, up until that point, I hadn’t really had the mainstream attention on that level, and I wasn’t all over the award shows, but I know my worth, and they seemed to know it too. I told my missus first” You and Stevie Wonder seem to have a beautiful friendship, and his famous quote about you is pretty funny, “When I grow up I want to be like Omar” Why do you think Stevie connected with you? Maybe because I sound a bit like him, (laughs) he’s had an influence on me, or maybe he saw a bit of me in him. Omar certainly has his own unique sound and flow which sets him apart from any other soul artists coming from the UK.

Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival 2020 The ninth edition of Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival closed after 7 days of activities, in which 104 films were screened (25 of them made in the Balearics and 38 of them made by women) with the mission of ‘Bridging Cultures-Bridging People’ and to offer the general public “the opportunity to enter a journey to the different realities that coexist in a global world and live an emotional experience, through stories from 26 countries and their protagonists.”

Time to relax

The festival’s extensive agenda was very different to the festivals of previous years due to the current situation but continued in its usual style and included an extensive program of complementary activities, which brought together local and international filmmakers in different locations around the city. EMIFF 2020 closed with the director, Sevgi Hirschhäuser winning the award for Best Film for her Turkish film ‘Toprak’. Hirschhäuser thanked Evolution, “a festival directed by a woman”, for giving her the opportunity to come to Spain for the first time. “I came without any expectations and this is crazy,” she told the panel. At the beginning of the ceremony, founder and director of the festival, Sandra Lipski, thanked “the filmmakers, who give us the greatest gift, your stories”. Next, the writer and scriptwriter Laura Gost (winner of a Goya for Woody & Woody), was in charge of presenting Fernando Trueba with the 2020 Evolution Honorary Award. “The name Trueba suggests talent and genius, it is difficult not to feel a deep admiration for Fernando. Creators like him will never be forgotten, despite the irony of the title of his last film”, she said, in conclusion, “in the name of Groucho, Woody and Billy Wilder, amen”.

Palma Hat Week 2020 Palma Hat Week 2020, took place 19th of October to the 25th for the second time. Mallorca resident, Karl Maria Count Kinsky hosted this year at the noble Hotel Saratoga in Palma. A hat exhibition, all about hat couture, featuring some of the world’s best hatters and milliners.

Bespoke hat creations that will influence the designs of fashion designers in the forthcoming season. “Despite the pandemic, we were able to show 40 hats from 22 hatters from 12 countries” says Count Kinsky. Hats First –Then the rest. The event which had to take place as a “light” version, this year due to the current circumstances, presented itself in a compact version of what is known as an event that spreads across town, usually showing models in classic cars or gathering hat lovers a day at the horse races (2019 program). In 2020 the exhibition merged with another of Count Kinsky’s extraordinary formats, showing original works of Salvador Dali alongside Palma Hat Week’s international hat exhibition.

Photo shoots were held throughout the week in various locations on the hotel’s premises and the Count himself would led interested spectators through the exhibition explaining hat techniques and the stories behind the works of Salvador Dali. A 45-Minute-long tour packed with info on the star milliners and Spain’s very own beloved son, Salvador Dali, enchanted the visitors of Palma Hat Week 2020 leaving everyone satisfied and eager to come back for more in 2021. Star Hatter, Stefania Belfiore has picked up on the Dali topic and created a special hat creation, showing a liquid watch in homage to Dali’s Work. This creation was also very much admired at the Exhibition. Palma Hat Week

has shown that it is possible to host cultural events and that all it needs is strong minds and big hearts to proceed with planning and hosting such beautiful islands of hope during these scary times. “It makes a point in proclaiming that the beauty we are able to create with our very own hands should help overcome the fear we are now living in and keep looking out for local cultural soul food in our area if we are to overcome this pandemic in a healthy state of mind”, says Count Kinsky and points our view to this year’s winning hat by Dutch milliner “Wies Maudit”, featuring, real diamonds, white feathers, special sinamay brim and pure silk.

Beau Monde with Diablo V @djdiablov

2020 What a Year! Let’s begin by thanking the team at Celebrity for letting me take over a couple of pages to show the summer that did happen. The 2020 season began as always with the Baby Jesus Charity Golf Tournament, an annual charity fundraiser put together by Moose and his faithful band of volunteers with all money raised once again going to charity. Little did we realise this would be the first and last event of its kind this year, the date was March 13th, the event is always well attended and the charity did very well. D.J-wise it was a busy weekend, 7 bookings in all, but then the day after……’lockdown’ was announced.
We all know the story from there, needless to say like many in the entertainment industry the diary was wiped out within a few weeks, but then, as Mallorca always does, we began to shine, and as the 14 | CELEBRITY

@DJ_DIABLOV

summer appeared, the doors opened and we slowly began again. At first it was sets in the vibrant marina of Puerto Portals on rooftop DJ duties with the wonderful people at BOP (Thanks Rebecca & Mark), just like many, they resolved, adapted and opened to a truly grateful crowd. As this took us into summer the tourists began to arrive and they weren’t the only new arrivals as I had a call from the newest bar to arrive in San Agustin, The Anchor, looking to get themselves firmly on the map as soon as possible, from that first phone call to the now firmly established Friday evenings, big shouts to Greig, Sam, Ty and the whole team for a job well done! By the time you read this they will be holding many other nights too, find them on Facebook!

As summer continued the flights and tourists did not and while the numbers weren’t as high, Mallorca’s spirit was, and

@diablov.dj

then the team at The Square (formerly BCM Square) got in contact and asked me to come on board to DJ in their huge open air terrace! Wow! Quite simply I was blown away by the unique way they had enabled people to go out and socialise while maintaining all social distancing rules, I mean the atmosphere was great, see some of the pictures for yourself, Thanks to John, Ben and the whole team I had the privilege of working with, you’re all awesome and to all those who visited, remember, you weren’t just supporting me, but a whole chain from manufacturers to wholesalers to delivery drivers, kitchen staff, waiters and more, so thank you.

Thinking 2020 couldn’t surprise anymore, not only did I complete a diploma in Psychotherapy but Celebrity Magazine got in contact and wanted to start a new television show on

the giant that is YouTube! Talk about a fun fuelled ride! From film crews, lighting, cameras and action - to ‘creative differences’ and editing, its been a crazy summer of filming. But even in harder times, the team at Celebrity welcomed me into their fold as presenter, and it’s been inspiring to see how determined the guys are to succeed, their combined energies are infectious! From a judge who didn’t budge to a leading lady of Netflix, they even threw in an author who is also an amazing artist, a fashionista, even Jaime from the all new

BCM, but you don’t have to take my word for it, check it out online. Another massive thank you to all the sponsors on that front too. Why not check out the interviews on the channel, just search ‘Celebrity Magazine Television’ on YouTube. As you read this we are now into winter season, and, at the time of writing, I’m hosting some great fun pub quizzes around the island, enjoying DJ sessions at The Anchor whilst filming upcoming episodes for Celebrity Magazine Television and all the time still on the radio too! Even in the winter its great to see we

are all digging deep to help those who need it most.
So I hope you all enjoy some of the pictures from the summer that was, thank you to all those who made it possible for me to work and continue my life on the island I call home, thank you to my other half for the best support any man could ask for and let me take this opportunity to wish you all seasons greetings as look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the festive period, Big Love, Diablo V.

FACES OF MALLORCA by Ben Mulvey

Brad Robertson - Save The Med Living on an island as beautiful as Mallorca, it is easy to take the Mediterranean sea that surrounds us for granted. But, like everything, this deep blue oasis needs care and attention and Brad Robertson and the team at Save The Med have stepped up to the challenge to regenerate and restore the beauty of the Med.

Save The Med is a foundation that works tirelessly to educate the local community and support local councils and governments to protect the sea. The foundation spends their days saving wildlife, clearing the sea of plastics that threaten to upset the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, and removing various fishing debris from the sea surrounding the Balearic Islands. Brad Robertson, one of the founders of the foundation, and I had a chance to sit down and chat and a man with more passion for his cause is hard to find. Asking Brad about 16 | CELEBRITY

the foundation ignites a fire and fervour that shows just what this foundation means to him. Save The Med started two years ago when two foundations joined forces to pool their expertise and resources to create an open, honest and transparent collaboration and work on their projects together. In the Balearics, Brad says that the key to the success of the foundation is down to local people working to solve local problems. These problems include the deluge of plastics that pollute our waters, illegal and unregulated fishing, the return of illegal

longlines that have appeared since lockdown ended and the outdated sewer systems that repeatedly pollute the sea. The governments and local councils are doing everything in their power to help alleviate some of these issues but Save The Med work closely with them to highlight ways to work efficiently to get the job done. The foundation has several vessels including the iconic Toftevaag, a Norwegian fishing vessel built in 1910 to fish herring in the North Atlantic. This stunning boat resembles a pirate ship and has been

INTRODUCING YOU TO THE PEOPLE AND FACES OF MALLORCA THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON THE ISLAND EVERY DAY…

repurposed as a research vessel that is used to carry out expeditions throughout the year with a crew that work tirelessly to study the Mediterranean and look out for wildlife. Although the foundation is based in the Balearics, Brad was keen to tell me about their latest venture which, until now, has been a closely guarded secret. Save The Med has teamed up with locals with similar values in the Alicante area that will have launched by the time we go to print. The aim is to nurture “likeminded beliefs and ethos through organic expansion with small organisations and groups of people”. Save The Med Levante will work with the current team in the Balearics for training and development in order to roll out a similar model in the Alicante area.

Of course, like most charitable foundations, Save The Med relies on the good nature of their volunteers, the exhaustive efforts of their team, and the generosity of the public through donations. With 13 employees, an office manager to oversee the day to day running of the foundation, and all of the overheads, Save The Med relies on volunteers and donations to carry out its important work. With costs of over 500,000 euros and the current global situation making things more complicated, donations are more welcome than ever. Every penny raised goes back into the foundation and those who donate can even suggest where they would like the money to be spent or just trust in the transparency of the foundation and that it will be used wisely.

TRANSLATING NATURE INTO ART

Exchanging Words For Colours “Never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream” they say. We must reinvent ourselves to stay fresh and I have gifted myself the space and time to do this.

Sometimes you don’t know that the change is on its way. A year ago I attended a weekend creativity workshop where the raw contact with colour and paper, the alluring smell of paint and the encouragement of the artistteachers ignited the spark that had always been there, biding its time: I began to paint with zest, falling in love again with this new form of expression. As Edward Hopper rightly stated, “If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint”. With twenty-five years as a professional translator I am well acquainted with the wonderful malleability of words, the 18 | CELEBRITY

subtleties, nuances and power of language. But expression is so much freer when I paint, no longer constrained by rules of grammar, spelling or style. Acrylics, varnishes, pastels, charcoal, paper, watercolours, glitter and glue are at my fingertips ready to come alive. One can say so much more with colours!!!! My paintings are created to transmit the joy I feel when I make them. Flowers, foliage and nature in general are my source of inspiration. The landscapes of Mallorca are so rich and the island light so singular that I only have to step out into my country garden for the creative energy to set in. I

It is indeed never too late. I feel younger than my years most days and like a child when I paint. I stand at the threshold of my 60s with excitement at new journeys, so much yet to do, so many paintings to paint. Brush in hand, music on and ready for the next one. Face2Face Fashion Stylish shields for challenging times We may all have to wear masks at the moment to keep each other safe, but that doesn’t mean our style has to be compromised. Felice Sierhuis, the owner of Face2Face Fashion, has designed a line of bespoke, stylish face shields that match perfectly with her beautiful scarves, bikinis and skirts from Farfalle di Felice.

by Ben Mulvey

Felice Sierhuis was born in the Netherlands and has been living in Mallorca for ten years. Having started her career as a successful international photo model in the nineties, Felice still models to this day, often with her son. Felice also works part-time in real estate, is a gifted photographer and a talented fashion designer. In order to spend more time being a mum, Felice launched Farfalle di Felice, while living in Cape Town - a bespoke online boutique that is inspired by Felice’s feminine intuition and her experience as a model 20 | CELEBRITY

as well as her extensive travels to create sophisticated designs for her collections. Part of the Farfalle collection is made up of beautiful 100% silk scarves that are made in Germany using natural materials and are all designed by Felice herself. These scarves are colourful, light and come in a variety of styles that not only complement Felice’s bikinis and clothing range but also work with any style for any season. When these difficult times began back in March, Felice felt that the face masks and face shields that were available on the market were uncomfortable and unattractive so

saw the opportunity to launch Face2Face Fashion to create face shields that feature stylish, comfortable headbands to ensure that everyone can still look their best and express themselves and their personalities. Aside from these two successful ventures, Felice also launched a men’s and children’s boutique called Lucca, named after her son, to diversify and reach a wider market with her designs. To shop Felice’s beautiful designs, visit www.farfalledifelice.com for bikinis and fashion and www.face2facefashion.eu for her bespoke face shields.

Dr. Mandeep Rai: THE VALUES COMPASS by Laura Stadler

The moment I met Dr Mandeep Rai during a signing of her inspiring international best-selling book The Values Compass, I felt myself in the presence of an exceptional lady. It was not just her physical beauty. Her long glossy dark hair in stark contrast to her white dress. Nor her deep brown eyes that appeared to take in all at a glance. It was her composure. Her aura of calm. I was certainly not surprised to later learn that for 20 years she has remained in close contact with the Dalai Lama and his team. Meeting up in various cities throughout the world. Indeed, they were the first people she sent her completed manuscript. Notably, the back cover of her book bears the prestigious endorsement of both the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra. Mandeep is a lockdown success story and was in Mallorca to celebrate. “It is such a special place for me, because the Balearics were the catalyst to my achievement. So, this year we rented a lovely villa and invited my husband’s family and mine to join us. Unfortunately, when England announced quarantine, everyone cancelled. But for us this trip was a must. Celebration is a gratitude and now I am in Mallorca my journey is complete.” Certainly, testimony to Mandeep’s pioneering character. Neither fear of Covid, nor quarantine would deter her. But how did this unique, highly acclaimed book come about? “I’ve been a freelance Foreign Correspondent and have travelled over 150 countries. Every time I visited a country, I would do my TV or radio report, then send a private email to my friends and family about my impressions of what struck me in whatever place I was in. These emails would then get forwarded to all kinds of people who would write back and say this should be a book. Yes, I thought I’ll write it when I retire. Then I fell pregnant 10 years ago and I had this sudden urge to accumulate and impart all the wisdom I had learned from around the world and pass it on to the next generation. “In fact, the book started off as ‘Letters to my Unborn Child’. I naively thought I could write while pregnant. But I also wanted to cram in some crazy countries before I gave birth. So I went to North Korea, Mongolia and Madagascar: and I didn’t manage to finish the book. Over the following years the book morphed into values from around the world. I started to think I should do this properly and get it published to make it available to everyone.” However, it was on a writer’s retreat in Mallorca held by Allegra Huston three years ago that Mandeep finally found the inspiration to write. “I had left my husband and two boys (9 and 7) at home. I had sacrificed so many things to come and now had another ten people to witness my commitment. I did not want to be that person who says something and does not complete. I said, ‘This time next year I’ll have a publishing

contract; and didn’t stop until it happened. I’ve been blessed. Publishers Simon & Schuster took the US rights, and Nicholas Brealey of Hachette took the World English rights. “I then came back to the Balearics last year to do the final edit. The Values Compass came out 7th January in the US and we launched it in Europe at the World Economic Forum at Davos on the 22nd January. Thankfully over the next few weeks it became a Wall Street Journal and then a Sunday Times Best Seller. It was then translated into various languages and has now been chosen as the guide to the Olympics by the Japanese. Next, it will be republished in hard back. This time branded across with International Best Seller.” Yet Mandeep remains calm and humble in her triumph. “I’m genuinely speechless and very grateful. To be honest I’m totally shocked by its success, because as soon as the book came out Covid struck. Book shops closed and Amazon said they were only going to deliver emergency

supplies. Worse still all my 74 events were cancelled as the world shut down around me. Yet despite all that, the book flew with a life of its own.” To what does she contribute its success? Does she believe that as both a business, life and travel guide, she has tapped into a nerve during this crazy lockdown year? “Yes, one can relate to this book on multi levels. The Values Compass: what 101 Countries, each with a different value, teach us about purpose, life and leadership. “The reset button has been pressed on the world. It is a moment of big decisions. And as we are thinking about how to go forward, this book helps you to navigate what is ahead, giving you the tools to anchor into your core values. I believe when you get to know and prioritise your top five values, then making small or big decisions becomes much easier. Also, the book takes you around the world at a time when we cannot travel. So it brings freedom, creativity and inspiration. Plus, it is certainly cost effective to be able to travel the world from your armchair.” Born of Indian descent with its rich culture, Mandeep has a compelling intensity and emanates a spirituality learned through study and travel. I found myself hanging on her every word as she explained to me how these values can be found in all the holy books of every culture and religion throughout the world. I especially experienced the light that Mandeep radiates. Now living in London, Mandeep seems a learned soul in a 41 year old’s body. “It is not me”, she explained “but the thousands of people who have contributed to the book, from Presidents and Luminaries, to Industry Leaders and those winning at life in various ways.” I’ll leave the final words to The Dalai Lama who sums up Mandeep’s remarkable book stating “The Values Compass takes us into the hearts, minds and traditions of the cultures and people of the world. It demonstrates how interconnected we are and how the divisions exist between us stem from narrow self-interest rather than concern for the good of our human family. I hope that the book will contribute to making the world a happier place.”

Island Spirit Sarah Livesey & Vivian Borsani

Astrology On December 21, 2020 we will witness “a great conjunction” of Jupiter and Saturn on the the exact date of the winter solstice. The two planets will appear just 0.06º apart right after sunset. It’s not happened since the year 2000 and won’t happen again until 2040. For the second year in a row, a total solar eclipse will cross the southern end of South America. The maximum duration of totality will be just under 2 minutes and 10 seconds, occurring outside Sierra Colorada in Argentina. During the total eclipse, viewers will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, with the naked eye, and they may also spot red tendrils of plasma snaking out from the sun known as solar prominences. A total solar eclipse is considered one of the most awesome of natural phenomena, inspiring people to travel across the world chasing totality, so if you can make it to Chile or Argentina, it could be well worth the trip. MASK FASHION Picking the most elegant face covering has become one of the most unexpected (and saddest) fashion challenges of 2020, with the market now fully saturated with countless options. You can get silk ones, cotton ones, floral ones, ones with your dog’s face on, and even accessorise with mask chains. Now, French fashion house Louis Vuitton are throwing their mask into the ring with a face shield of their very own. Reportedly costing a tidy $961 – roughly £750 – it’s one of the most expensive face coverings going. This pricey piece of PPE was released around the world on 30 October as a part of Louis Vuitton’s 2021 Cruise Collection. The company described the shield as ‘an eyecatching headpiece, both stylish and protective’ in a press release. Louis Vuitton will join the likes of Burberry, which was among the first luxury fashion brands to announce the launch of their own $115 (£90) face covering. LV masks will be made from leftover fabric. Burberry cotton face masks are available in archive beige and pale blue, sustainably produced from revalued fabric and enhanced with antimicrobial technology. Twenty per cent of each sale will be donated to the brand’s Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund, which continues to provide PPE as well as assistance to food banks and healthcare charities globally. The Burberry Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund was established in April to support local communities in need, including Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa. Clearly, Burberry are making amends following the controversy surrounding their recent mass stock destructions and landfills.

WAVY LIPS In 2017, a viral trend swept the internet - ‘wavy brows’. In fact, I wrote about it back then. We witnessed beauty influencers and fans of the trend drawing on their eyebrows in a wavy pattern – often created with a little help from Face tune. Three years on, there’s a brand-new Instagram trend to match. Though its origins are unknown, it’s believed to have been started by a Russian plastic surgeon (as many of the strangest beauty trends do, dare I say it). Coined ‘devil lips’, or ‘octopus’ lips’, the procedure is said to involve inserting filler in the outer lip to create a wave effect across both the lips. On IG, you can easily stumble across different women sporting the lip look, usually to a “mixed” reaction from followers and other viewers. Some have compared them to blisters, others have called the trend ‘bizarre’ and ‘stupid’ or “an exotic form of herpes”. Others call it “oddly aesthetically pleasing.”Since the trend first took off, others have followed suit, creating their own versions of ‘devil lips’ with make-up or by using Photoshop. Many believe that the latter is the only way that the people who have allegedly had lip fillers could create them. A leading cosmetic surgeon commented: “You cannot change the anatomical shape of the lips like this. You can sharpen and contour by enhancing the vermillion border, but these ‘devil lips’ are unnatural.” She continued to explain the damage you could cause if you tried to create this look with fillers. “Filler injected inappropriately could end up in a blood vessel, causing blockages and leading to necrosis (death) of the tissue..” So, while the trend is not easily physically do-able (for now), in an age of photoshop, face tune and face filters – as well as face-changing make-up – you too can join the devilish fun and post it on your socials without any adverse health effects.

RHOC Hanna and Martin are Expecting! Hanna and Martin Kinsella from Real Housewives of Cheshire are very excited to announce that they are expecting their first baby together…I spoke to them to find out more about their fabulous news and how things are in their busy lives.

By Ben Mulvey

Celebrity Magazine has been following the lives of our favourite couple from ITV’s Real Housewives of Cheshire for over a year now, from their stunning wedding to their lives in lockdown so it is very exciting for us to hear about this latest chapter in their lives. I saw Hanna and Martin a few months ago and noticed that Hanna wasn’t joining us for a drink, most unusual for her, and wondered if some baby news was pending, but didn’t want to pry. It was then announced that the couple were indeed expecting and a glamorous pregnancy shoot followed in OK! Magazine in the UK. “Martin and I are literally over the moon...it’s been such an emotional experience already and I feel truly blessed to have married the love of my life and now we are going to be a little family,” Hanna announced. As always, the couple is very busy and the pregnancy hasn’t stopped them in their tracks although the pace has slowed a little bit on for Hanna to take time to enjoy being pregnant.“We are both still working, although with lockdown things are slower for us with our patients but everything else is really busy,” Martin tells me. 26 | CELEBRITY

Real Housewives of Cheshire is still being filmed, including the episode featuring the gender reveal, a closely guarded secret from everyone at the moment. They have also had the first 3D scan filmed for the show so that viewers really can follow the whole journey with them. Martin is still very busy looking after his patients, remotely at the moment, and is continuing with all of his other projects from home. He is very much looking forward to getting back to see his patients and coming back to Mallorca although he is not sure when that will be, perhaps as a father sometime next spring! Hanna, meanwhile, has launched her own brand of diamond-whitening toothpaste called Icy Bear which is proving very successful. The toothpaste is made with real diamonds that are crushed down into fine diamond dust to create a paste that is less abrasive on teeth and reduces and inhibiting stains. “Clients have been asking me over the years which toothpaste I recommend so I thought it was time I created my own and came up with Icy Bear”, Hanna tells me. With a baby on the way, high-profile careers,

and a successful ITV show on air, this couple really are the busiest people I know. Martin’s clinic, Re-enhance Medicina Asthetica is located in Avenida del Rey Jaime I, 108, in Santa Ponsa and, although he isn’t here at the moment, enquiries can be made by contacting info@re-enhance.com.To find out more about Icy Bear or to place an order visit www.icybeardental.com and be sure to tune in to episode 10 of Real Housewives of Cheshire on ITVBe for the product launch. Meet Our Publisher… Donna Suarez Donna Suarez is a name that appears in Celebrity Magazine every edition but what do we all really know about the lady behind the magazine? Read on to find out about our Publisher and the reason she decided to stand at the helm of the reincarnated version of Celebrity Magazine…. By Ben Mulvey

Donna Suarez

Donna has been on the island for over 20 years and, after spending time in Mallorca over the years, knew this was the island with opportunities and where her two beautiful daughters, Savina and Talia, could grow up in a safe and happy environment. Having always owned her own businesses, and experiencing the highs and lows of life as an expat with several stumbles along the way, she finally found her calling in the real estate market. The phrase “could sell ice to Eskimos”, normally comes with negative connotations, especially within the real estate industry but with Donna, she can sell the right thing to the right person, no matter what it is or who they are. Understanding people seems to be one of her many talents which, combined with a passion for the real estate industry, makes her successful. Donna later decided to set up Calvia Properties, focusing as the name suggests on the Calvia region which, although being the main area of expertise, has since grown to cover the entire island. After renting some office space with the fabulous team at Ibex Insurance in Son Caliu, Donna’s business started to boom, with full autonomy to work as she saw fit and to her own strong set of morals and she soon incorporated a

sales and admin team which set Calvia Properties up as one of the most reliable real estate agencies in the south west. Donna believes that people are more important than anything else and has built her business on this basic principle which she also applies to her team: look after your team and they will look after you and, subsequently, will look after their clients. After the success of Calvia Properties, Donna quickly discovered that several sharks swam in the waters of Mallorcan real estate but genuinely couldn’t understand why. “Why fight against each other when we can work together?” And so, Real Estates United was born (the name was chosen by her daughter Talia). Real Estates United is a network of agents and trusted professionals that work together in a transparent, honest and professional way to encourage the industry to thrive. By starting this network, more than 80 businesses have collaborated so far and clients, agents and related businesses have benefited, REU offers estate agents a secure platform to collaborate and with regular networking meetings (even now with certain restrictions) it has become one of the largest and leading collaboration platforms in Spain.

So how does a real estate agent wade into the world of publishing and advertising and end up running a magazine? Well, like most of us often captured in Celebrity Magazine socially, and loving the personal touch Ken and Angie gave Celebrity throughout the social scene of Mallorca, Donna mentioned to the couple that she was keen to start a property magazine to complement her businesses and branch out to a wider audience. It was suggested that she take over Celebrity to do this and she quickly realised that the ingredients were there to enhance her businesses whilst reaching a wider audience and offering a media platform, not only in the physical printed format but also online. The idea soon became a reality and after the first year of success two of the key people working with Donna, Matthew and Larrick became partners, Celebrity grew even stronger and catapulted to the forefront becoming one of the leading Magazines island wide reaching a larger audience via the social media platforms and YouTube channel. As a team, we at Celebrity Magazine believe that reaching the community is vital and bringing people together in an upbeat and positive way allows us to reach out to our readers and

bring clients to our advertisers. Even in these challenging times, we publish uplifting content and features that inspire hope, one of Donna’s favourite words, “with hope we can achieve anything if we put our mind to it and we will have a darn good time trying along the way”. As a new field of business for her, Donna knew that it was imperative she find people that would help her reach her new goals as a Publisher, to call on the expertise of people she knew and trusted and to grow the magazine to its full potential. As a writer, I class myself lucky as one of those people and writing for, and working with Donna never feels like work. We work professionally, we work hard but never feel pressured, always feel valued and always work together as a team (more often than not with a glass of wine in hand if a lengthy chat is needed!) Fridays are most definitely the best days in the Celebrity office! So, as you are already several pages deep into our latest edition, and by this point, Donna will be blushing scarlet, I would like to tell you a little more about where the magazine is going…. Celebrity Magazine has grown more than any of us envisaged at the beginning, I would normally say “of this journey” but that sounds far too

X-Factor and Donna would probably spit out her G&T laughing at that phrase….but a journey it has been. We have interviewed the best of the best, met the people that make the island tick and had a blast doing it along the way. Our YouTube channel is growing and people are interacting with us daily. And, in these difficult times, Donna thought hard to find a way that Celebrity could support local businesses and came up with the idea of the Celebrity Privilege Club which is a way for businesses to promote themselves without having to fork out a lot of money when times are tough and they need to have their voices heard. As I’m not a salesman, merely a humble writer, I shall drop the link (www.celebritymallorca.es/ privilege-club-join/) for you to read yourselves and let you contact the team if you deem it fit for your business. So, there you have it, the fabulous lady behind the scenes, my friend and “boss” Donna that sought me out years ago after a chance meeting at Gay Pride in Mallorca in the heart of Palma, the lady with a heart for all and the lady that is always there for friends, clients and colleagues and is never too busy to take your calls, WhatsApps or reply to your emails. She is the one that steers this ship

with her equally fabulous co-captains, Matthew and Larrick, to bring you the Celebrity Magazine that we are all proud to present to you for this odd, slightly turbulent, but beautiful winter in Mallorca. DISCLAIMER: I did not get paid to say nice things about Donna and all G&Ts were willingly given and consumed. I do actually like her!

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES

by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts

Photos by Gary Lloyd-Rees

The Soller Valley has an autumn and a winter life. We are ‘the island within an island’ where day to day happenings continue. We have six public schools and a thriving nursery sector. Many people live in the Soller Valley and commute to Palma. The majority have all their lives here including education and employment. We even have our own fishing fleet in the Port of Soller which sets out to sea, three days a week, all year. We are, of course a busy resort area in the summer season. Our horseshoe bay is second to none and once found is revisited time and time again. Our winter time is full of walkers and cyclists who love the challenges of the Serra de Tramuntana.

30 | CELEBRITY

This is a multi employment city not totally dependant on tourism. This means the resort closures of other parts of the island do not happen here. We have an 11-month season which is second only to Palma. All this means is that when visitors come through the Soller Tunnel into our beautiful world they arrive in a normal every day world, glad to welcome tourists but also getting on with their lives. Some resorts on the island are purpose built and close for the winter. The reason thousands get on the Soller Train and visit us is because they want to see ‘real life’ Mallorca in action and beauty. The Soller Valley is emerging out of its COVID months with new ideas and

businesses galore. Hotels will change hands and huge refurbishments will take their place this winter. Everyone wants to be ready for the excitement of 2021. Anyone new to our world needs to spend time in the furthest tip of the Port of Soller. After years of building and refurbishment the Marina Tramuntana is finished. A new fish market, diving school, restaurants and bar take their place for all the arriving yachts and everyone else who wants to be there. This hub will be a ‘happening place’ in 2021. As always friends, the Soller Valley welcome you and look forward to seeing you soon omewhere in the Valley.

Stay Anchored It’s always fun writing about places that I frequent myself and that are owned by people I call friends so the opportunity to write about my local pub, The Anchor in San Agustin was one that I could not pass up. by Ben Mulvey

Located on Camí de Gènova a Sant Agustí, the road leading to Genova, just up from the main drag of Cala Mayor and San Agustin, The Anchor was opened by Greig, Sam and Ty after lockdown and offers a friendly pub environment that is already proving popular, even in these trying times. A mixed (and socially distanced) crowd gathers here throughout the week which makes the place feel like a second home with all of us Cala Mayor locals catching up around the tables. The nautical-themed interior is comfortable and inviting and Greig, Sam and Ty are on hand for a chat (or in my case some lighthearted ribbing!) and to serve you a selection of drinks to rival most bars in Palma and the surrounding areas. Four draft beers, a draft cider, dozens of spirits and an extensive line up of wines are on offer and drinks promotions are available throughout the week. Live sporting events including football, rugby

and even Australian football are shown on their multiple screens through La Liga TV with the first beer half-price if the match is listed on the board. On Fridays, ladies can sip on free-flowing cava and tap their feet while Diablo V plays his typically-upbeat DJ set. A perfect bar for the winter months, the guys are coming up with lots of ideas to keep us all entertained throughout the colder season. The new pool table will host Killer Pool evenings with the winner taking all, a trivia night is on the cards to keep our grey matter ticking over as well as some themed evenings, a Christmas Eve party and a New Year’s Eve party. Once our lives return to normal and the dreaded ‘C’ is merely a memory, there will be even more events and we will actually be able to dance to Diablo V’s set so let’s hope that happens sooner rather than later.

If you’re looking to spend a long weekend afternoon in the bar, The Anchor currently have no plans to serve food but the guys have no problem with you ordering from the neighbouring bars and restaurants and eating it in the bar...or simply feast on the crisps and nuts and leave more space for that extra Peroni! The Anchor is a slice of home for the expat community with an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere and a fantastic selection of drinks that was definitely missing in the area. So, stay anchored, pop in for a pint and spend your winter with a great group of people - you won’t be disappointed! And if you see me at the bar, come and say hello...mine’s a Peroni! Take a Walk on the Wild Side of Mallorca

by

During the quieter and cooler months of the year, hiking and walking are exciting ways to explore the island - all for the price of a pair of sturdy comfortable shoes, a little backpack with sunscreen, a light jacket and a water bottle. By Stephanie Horsman

Waterfall in Orient

MALLORCA’S MOUNTAIN RANGES Aside from the lower Serra de Llevant in the northeast, the Serra de Tramuntana runs all the way along the northwest coast of the island. It covers approximately 30% of Mallorca’s territory with its highest peak reaching 1,445m. Honouring the wealth and diversity of its scenery including holm oak, pine forests alternating with farmland, terraced olive groves, seaviews, citrus and almond tree plantations in the valleys, the mountain range was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mallorca is a true hikers’ paradise. TRY THE SANTA MARIA TO ORIENT ROUTE “Walking the entire circuit can be challenging, so it’s not recommended for beginners, but the start of the walk is along a beautiful pathway and is mostly flat, making it perfect for walkers of every level. Dogs are welcome, too!” Since we have had plenty of pristine sea views over the summer season, let’s explore inland. This walk begins in the market village of Santa Maria del Camí, roughly 20 minutes by car or train from Palma. From the train station in Santa Maria, walk (or drive) to the end of the road and turn left onto Camí de Coanegra just after Macia Batle winery. Cross the train tracks and follow the paved road toward Alaró, passing some lovely countryside and estates. THE WALK BEGINS The track follows the natural gulley and passes through Son Roig, where there is a spring, and crosses a gate to the Son Pou estate (about 2.5km from the start of the dirt trail). You will then take the 32 | CELEBRITY

La Granja

forest path to the right, which skirts the houses and takes us back to the footpath. At this point, there is a rather steep rise on a rocky trail. You will then come to a fork in the path. Continue on to Orient DETOUR TO SALT DES FREU At a small pass, you turn off to the left towards the gulley. The path, which has impressive views, starts to flatten out, and after passing near to a limestone silo and kiln, turns sharply to the left. Straight away, you pass a stone wall behind which the winding cart track descends to the gulley. At this point, it is possible to take a path to the left, to the Es Freu waterfall which is spectacular in the rainy season. FINAL DESTINATION The route then crosses the gulley, leading to a metal gate that provides access. You will see the ruins of the Es Freu houses on the right and, 15 minutes after going through the gate, you will reach the road. Continue up, and you will arrive in Orient roughly 30 minutes later. TRANSPORTATION FROM ORIENT For the return, reservations must be made at least one day prior to the walk. You can book a taxi or reserve the only one bus route L221, which is an on-demand service. Call +34 617 365 365 from Monday to Saturday in winter and 7 days a week from 1 June to 31 October. The L221 leaves Orient at 17.45. This should be noted when planning your walk, which takes 4-6 hours depending on your walking speed. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE A new hiking route is planned along the

coastline in the south of Mallorca: the Route of the Lighthouses, or, in Mallorquín: La Ruta dels Fars. It will run all the way from Cap Salines to Andratx where it will connect with the GR221 the Dry Stone Route, that runs through the Serra de Tramuntana. I don’t know about you, but I love a good walk. One that really gets the blood pumping and clears the head. RCD MALLORCA

New CEO of Business of RCD Mallorca Just five months into his new role as CEO of Business of RCD Mallorca, Alfonso Díaz has had to manage the economic challenges posed by a global pandemic, a nationwide absence of fans from stadiums and an unconventional transfer window – all that before the small matter of actually playing football even got underway. The lockdown across the country prevented millions of people visiting and this impacted things from an economic and social perspective. We couldn’t just sit back and I felt we had to be proactive. We took responsibility and became the first club worldwide to change the naming-rights of our stadium to contribute to recovering from the effects of a pandemic and it’s something we’re immensely proud of. We also work with local and national businesses to promote the region, have supported local food banks and collaborated with the Red Cross campaign alongside Rafa Nadal and Pau Gasol. This didn’t just start with the pandemic however; the RCD Mallorca Foundation has helped 150,000 people to date over the course of 15 years.

Speaking from his office at the Visit Mallorca Estadi, Díaz took time out of his busy schedule to share with Celebrity Magazine how RCD Mallorca is aiding the COVID-19 relief effort on the island. Hi, Alfonso. Thank for you speaking with Celebrity Magazine. Let’s begin with a little bit about yourself. You joined the club four years ago and have now become CEO, but what attracted you to the project at RCD Mallorca in the first place? Hi, it’s a pleasure to speak with you. I joined just three months after a new ownership group including Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, NBA star Steve Nash and former tennis professional Andy Kohlberg purchased the club. I had over 16 years’ experience in multinational companies, but it was time to change and bring that knowledge to an industry like football. RCD Mallorca was the perfect challenge in that respect

and has been an unforgettable experience so far. It’s been a roller coaster few years for the club, but if you had to pick a favourite moment, what would that be? Getting the club promoted to a professional division again allowed us to change oursituation, but the second consecutive promotion to the best league in the world came when beat Deportivo de La Coruña in the play-off final. To celebrate getting back to La Liga with the amazing support of our fans has been a profound experience in both my professional and personal life. To this day, I’m still really proud of all the players and staff who make up our family. One of the initiatives you have introduced since becoming CEO of the club was changing the name of the stadium from Son Moix to the Visit Mallorca Estadi. Why did you decide to do this?

While we’re still living amidst a global pandemic, when normality does return and fans are allowed into stadiums, why should they come to the Visit Mallorca Estadi? We’re the biggest club on the island and offer a fan experience like no other, not just here in Mallorca, but also the country. We’re the only club with a pitch side VIP area where you’re touching distance from the players, and the Tunnel Experience we have introduced actually allows you to sit in the tunnel as the players prepare and walkout onto the pitch. Whether it be attending press conferences or taking part in a Meet & Greet with players in our VIP rooms, there’s nothing like it. And finally, new manager, new players, new season. It’s an exciting time for the club, right? We know how hard and competitive the Segunda División is, but we’re going to fight until the last minute for promotion. The league itself is one of the most exciting in Europe, but being a part of this fanbase really does go beyond football and we want to share that with as many people as we can.

´´As Cohen memorably asked us all: ´You don’t really care for Music do ya..´ ?

30%

Here is my answer: Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes and at the risk of re-enacting the “When Harry Met Sally” scene - YES!!! I really do! I have heard and seen it literally change our lives for the better! I KNOW because every day I wake up with the excitement, commitment and love for it! Have you ever been so excited to wake up and show the world just what you´re made of - just what you can do? Music is like that for me. I used to worry that if I didn’t make it big as an ´´A-List´´ pop star then I would have failed. But then I saw what the industry did to those we loved the most. The savage way in which talent was corrupted and lost. The industry is not a music one. It is an industry of ´musical´ fame! And at times fame for fame´s sake. This is not the music I care for. I want every man, woman and child to BELIEVE that, through learning and working with music, we can transform our life chances. We can transform our social, cultural and economic status. Because we can. And I can prove it. I offer hourly lessons in 6 week blocks, in person or via zoom. COVID compliant. Bring out the musican in you - book your lessons today!

PARALYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST JOINS MALLORCA 6-POINTS A few weeks after the 2020 instalment of the Mallorca 312 cyclosportive was definitively cancelled until next year, the Senses Hotels 6Points Mallorca broke the mold of so many sporting events this year and started in Santa Ponsa with over 30 riders, including Karen Darke, winner of Silver and Gold Medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games respectively, taking on this grueling 400km ride on her hand cycle designed by the Williams Formula One Team. Every four hours, someone in the UK is permanently paralysed through spinal cord injuries and at the age of 21 Karen - who had an unquenchable thirst for all manner of extreme adventures - was climbing the sea cliffs outside Aberdeen when she fell 35 feet onto rocks, fracturing her skull and breaking her back along with several bones in her body, leaving her in hospital for six uninterrupted months and thereafter paralysed from the chest down. The rehabilitation from spinal injuries through sport was largely pioneered by Doctor Ludwig Guttmann at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire – ‘The Guttmann Centre’ becoming the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. In spite of the devastation of such life changing injuries, going on a Back Up Trust event highlighted to Karen how those confined to a wheelchair were able to live independently and the activities in which they were able to participate, giving her a lifeline with which to move forwards and thereafter, pursuing her self-driven path to be the adventureseeking girl she was before her accident. Delightful company and humble in the extreme, she made this journey through a series of what she engagingly referred to 36 | CELEBRITY

as ‘WIBA’s – ‘Wouldn’t It Be Amazing If…’. She took up hand-cycling, crossing the Himalayas and cycling the length of Japan, as well as kayaking from Canada to Alaska and pushing herself across 500 miles of Greenland on a sit-ski; “One of the maddest things I’ve ever done...” “With the hand-cycle - as with any other sport - you feel that the longer you do it for, the better you get, only to realise that I was very good at going slowly for long periods of time! It was suggested that I should add some science to my training and aim for the Paralympics, for which I then trained 30 hours a week. If you don’t try, you don’t know. It had never crossed my mind that I was an elite athlete, but I discovered that in so many ways, ability is a state of mind.” As a new ambassador for 6Points Cycling Challenges and now resident in Pollensa, Karen gave an address during the course of the weekend that transfixed everyone in the room, making many well-up at the her sheer bravery - alongside the modesty and the boundless positive energy with which she delivered her extraordinary story.

The Senses Mallorca 6Points was originally scheduled to run in its traditional slot in mid-May, but like so many events in this difficult year, was forced to postpone due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the related government restrictions in Mallorca. This was the popular event’s fourth running. Conceived by keen cyclist Bryan Visser, the small groups of mixed ability riders were to take on the challenge of visiting Mallorca’s 6 extreme points; north, south, east, west, highest and lowest. Hotel closures at key points made it necessary to amend certain parts of the route but the event remained a three-day ride over 400km on some of the world’s best cycling routes, including a final day along the full length of Mallorca’s Tramuntana. Whilst designed to be a friendly challenge for the riders, there is a serious side too in that every cent and Euro raised goes to support two very worthy local charities in ASDICA and Save-The-Med. ASDICA is a small Calvià based organisation that supports adults and children with learning disabilities and Save-the-Med is a well-

known island based environmental charity committed to marine conservation. The event enjoyed the support of many local businesses through sponsorship and had the vital backing of the Calvià Council and Consell de Mallorca that kept faith in the most difficult of circumstances to help promote two-wheeled tourism in this island’s cycling paradise. After a devastating summer, much of Mallorca’s tourism industry and sporting events have been left with no choice but to call time on summer 2020, but with a dedicated team and a phenomenal effort, the Senses 6Points Mallorca Cycling Challenge somehow managed to navigate its way through to be one of the very few events of its kind to take place in 2020.

With a return to near normality, next year’s event is scheduled to return to its usual dates in the middle of May, with monthly rides taking place throughout the winter period. For more information: www.6pointschallenges.com Become a fantastic new addition to the dining and drinking options along the vibrant and fun stretch of coastline around Cala Major. Superbly located and with ample parking, it has also become the current base for the Wednesday evening classic and supercar gatherings whilst their spiritual home, The Boathouse in Palma, remains closed due to the virus outbreak. Again, after locking down for a few months and with the island relatively free of people, there is a renewed energy to the Wednesday gatherings and

spirited weekend drives around the island. With finger food laid on and prices that are infinitely less eye-watering than anything you might need for your boat from the marina office downstairs, a Wednesday evening at Nova Del Mar is definitely one for the petrolheads. Property Market Update Santa Maria - 2.895m

What a year we have all been experiencing, unprecedented in so many ways. So many negative and unsettling aspects with the current health crisis – affecting so many people in Mallorca and around the world working in tourism and hospitality. Yet conversely, there are the positive aspects which include the healing of the planet with so much less pollution and the strengthening of many familial ties with the need to support and nurture. This will certainly be one of those years which will be referred to in history books, with the ending still so very uncertain. The summer period in real estate was naturally an unusual one. When the lockdown barriers started lifting late June the internet went crazy, with the braver property seekers starting to trickle in early July, which strengthened to a strong flurry by the end of the month. Despite the turmoil and uncertainty around the world, it seemed that many were determined to change their living environments and many agents reported a successful period. The lower end of the market up to € 500,000 - 600,000 was busy, with a strong emphasis from residents wishing to acquire more outdoor space – a hangover from the total lockdown certainly. This would seem to be the case in the UK too, with a need for living close to central 38 | CELEBRITY

London and the hardy commute that it entails, being diminished by the realisation that many people can work effectively from home. The same was reflected in property around the island and one feels that the island has done well considering the ongoing health crisis, with strong growth away from the city – as much as 16.4% in asking prices in some areas such as Cala Vinyes with its beautiful sandy beaches. Santa Ponsa averages were also up by 10.9% and Pollensa’s by 8%, while Palma saw a price decrease of 10.5%. The southwest as always remains the most popular place of interest and enquiries. All of this led to an average year-on-year rise in property values of 3.2%. In my personal experience of the higher end of the British market in Mallorca, interest was present but perhaps more sluggish than usual early July, with many sitting on the fence to see if there was to be a major readjustment. As August came and went and prices held firm, interest and enquiries picked up substantially, reflecting the strength of the island both as an investment as well being a beautiful place to either live or own a second home. September and October for myself has been manic, and speaking with a number of other agents it appears they are too, with the prospect of a bumper year end - which will be a huge relief to many in our industry, in particular the tax office! Definitely confirmation that in these economically critical times, wealthy investors see property investment in Mallorca as a stable and crisis-proof investment, with much more security than a bank at present. Whilst the devastation of the tourist industry will only be assessed accurately in retrospect, autumn in Mallorca remains one of the most beautiful periods of the year – with blue skies and warm sunshine alongside cooler evenings. The mountain ranges beckon with their rugged beauty offering many kilometers of glorious hiking

to be enjoyed and diverse and exhilarating cycling routes. The beaches remain empty and the sea still retains some of the warmth of the summer and is still very inviting. With so few tourists here at this time, it feels a little like time-warping back to the early days of tourism on the islands pre-1960’s, incredibly clean, empty and achingly beautiful. It may be short lived and the livelihoods of so many depend on that being the case. For the moment, we must try to enjoy the circumstances that are forcing us to slow down and perhaps get a little more in synch with the true rhythm, diversity and ambience of our beautiful island. So until next issue don’t let the fearmongering get you down - be safe, take precautions, but do try to enjoy every precious moment! And if one of those bucket list items is a dream home in the sun, please do get in contact. Amanda J Butler – an holistic approach to real estate in Mallorca. Pet Update: Coronavirus and Our Pets animals foot-and-mouth, canine parvo etc). The ability to cause disease depends on its virulence, i.e. its ability to destroy cells, ranging from the common cold, (you just feel unwell), to rabies which destroys neurones in animals and humans and causes death.

This months article couldn’t be about anything other than Coronavirus so, if you are fed up with that topic like many of us, then turn the page! We are all very fed up, but it’s here to stay, much like the flu virus. So I think it is advisable that we get to know a bit more about it and how it can affect our pets. Quick overview: what are viruses? They are the smallest intracellular parasites, a lump of proteins which attach to cells and use the cells machinery to replicate themselves, then destroy the cell. There are viruses which infect the cells of all organisms, including plants, insects, other parasites and even bacteria and fungi. Viruses cause some of the most serious diseases of man and animals, (i.e. colds, flu, smallpox, measles in humans and in

Most viruses are host (i.e. animal or human) specific, which means they can only infect and make the correct host or “cell” ill. That is why there is a lot of talk about a jump from bats in China to people.

it to their owners? The answer, up to now is no. They can act as physical transmitters (i.e. someone with the virus touches or sneezes on a cat or dog, then soon afterwards someone else comes along, strokes them and then transmits the virus to their eyes or mucous membranes). Don’t panic, pets are safe and they give emotional and psychological help in these strange times. Wear your masks and keep a safe distance.

In veterinary medicine, we already know about and treat lots of Coronaviruses. And these have never caused illness for people. There are Coronaviruses that can cause gastroenteritis in cattle, pigs and young dogs. There is one which can cause encephalitis in pigs and bronchitis in chickens! And cats can catch a virulent form which causes Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) and is always fatal. Worryingly veterinarians have been working on a vaccine for cat FIP and it is still proving to be very difficult to get an effective one. So can our pets get COVID 19 and then spread
