The “Voice of a Generation”

Christina Aguilera at Mallorca Live Festival Since 1992, Christina Aguilera has built herself a sensational career that has spanned generations and earned her the title of “global superstar”. The power of her vocals has propelled her to international stardom around the globe and her record sales have topped some 75 million worldwide in both English and Spanish. Now, residents in the Balearics are gearing up to welcome her to our shores as one of the headline acts of the Mallorca Live Festival on 24, 25, and 26 June. By Ben Mulvey

“The little girl with the big voice” was born in New York City and raised in Pennsylvania and soon began to be noticed for her vocal abilities by talent shows and scouts in her local area. Opening stadiums and singing the national anthem at baseball and football matches led to her big break on The Mickey Mouse Club, starring alongside future stars, Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake. In 1994, when the show was cancelled, Christina continued her singing career in Japan by recording the song “All I Wanna Do” with Japanese singer, Keizo Nakanishi, before bursting back onto the international stage upon her return to the US after auditioning to sing the title song “Reflection” for Disney’s Mulan. The success of “Reflection” caught the attention of RCA Records who, encouraged by the teen-pop craze that had taken the world by storm with the likes of Britney Spears, saw an opportunity to propel Christina to the same levels of stardom. Her debut single “Genie In A Bottle” was released in 1999 and peaked at the top of the Billboard 100 chart and on the charts of twenty other countries. The album quickly followed and reached number one on the US Billboard 200, was certified eight times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and sold 17 million copies worldwide. Three other successful singles including “What a Girl Wants”, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)”, and “I Turn to You” were released from the album and became just as successful. Remaining at the top of her game in the teen-pop genre, Christina made a brave career move by appearing in the video of the cover of “Lady Marmalade” with Pink,

Mya and Lil Kim, a huge step away from her squeaky-clean image of the girl-nextdoor. Her label was unhappy with the move as it featured Christina and the other artists dancing provocatively in raunchy outfits, but it soon proved a success as it flew to the top of the charts and won Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. The success of this career move gave Christina the courage to change her image and make more artistic decisions for herself. In 2003, “Stripped”, Christina’s fourth album was released and was met with a massive shift in public opinion with many believing that her new raunchy image and sexualised videos were inappropriate. In an interview, Christina stated that the title represented “a new beginning, a re-introduction of [herself] as a new artist in a way”. She served

as the album’s executive producer and cowrote most of the songs. To introduce her new persona, Aguilera released “Dirrty” as the lead single from the album in September 2002. She defended her new image in the press by saying: “I’m in the power position, in complete command of everything and everybody around me. To be totally ballsout like that is, for me, the measure of a true artist.” By 2006, Stripped had sold over 12 million copies worldwide. The second single from the album, “Beautiful”, received universal acclaim for its powerful lyrics about embracing inner beauty and became an anthem for the LGBT community. It became the album’s best-charting single, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards in 2004. In 2010 Christina took a break from music and tried her hand at acting, something that was rather risky decision considering that many of her peers had released films that had turned into box office flops. Her debut film “Burlesque” alongside Cher was met with mixed reviews by critics but Aguilera’s acting was praised and award nominations soon followed. Going back to music, Christina released a couple of albums that were well-received well around the world. From April 2011 to December 2012, Aguilera became as a judge and coach on the first three seasons of the television series The Voice. During the first season, Christina was featured on Maroon 5’s single “Moves like Jagger” with the group’s lead vocalist and fellow The Voice coach Adam Levine. The single peaked atop the Billboard CELEBRITY | 5

Hot 100 and was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America and became one of the catchiest songs of the year. Going back to her Ecuadorian roots, Christina released her ninth studio album in Spanish and released it in three parts, with the first being an extended play titled “La Fuerza” released on January 21, 2022. It would be her first Spanish album in 22 years and was well-received in Latin America, Spain and around the world. With cancelled concerts and events a common occurrence over the last two years due to the pandemic, Christina is now delighted to be back on the road and appearing at events and concerts around the world such as Pride in Los Angeles, Dubai World Expo…and our very own Mallorca Live Festival! Mallorca Live Festival has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with world-renowned artists taking to the stage. This year the huge festival takes place on the 24th, 25th and 26th of June in Magaluf and Christina Aguilera is booked to perform as the headline act on the 25th alongside global superstars Franz Ferdinand and Supergrass. The next day, Muse are the headliners with a huge list of other artists from around the world - there really is something for every musical taste. Mallorca Live Festival will be Christina’s first time on the island and is certainly one of the biggest names to have performed here in the last few years. Her performance is no doubt set to be an incredible experience as she always brings plenty of effects, dance routines and of course her incredible vocals to any of her shows. Let’s hope that she performs plenty of her wellknown hits in both English and Spanish for her loyal fans to dance and sing along with. Mallorca Live Festival is taking place on 24th, 25th and 26th June in Magaluf with tickets starting from €59 per day. For more information visit https://mallorcalivemusic.com/.

Britney Spears y Justin Timberlake.

Otros tres singles del álbum - “What a Girl Wants”, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” y “I Turn to You” – asimismo cosecharon un éxito rotundo.

the epitome of the daytime pool party phenomenon that has taken Ibiza by storm in recent years. This will be his third-year residency with an extended 12 week run from 10 July. In an exclusive interview he shares: “Do you know what, there’s never a day that, that feeling when people are singing the words back to certain songs and you know that they’re not just singing it out to me; those songs mean something to them, they’re timestamps in their life and they remember that song and they remember that moment with the friend they are next to or friends they were with. And I never take it for granted; weirdly enough it feels like the first time, every time. Like when I walk on stage and you’re just like, who would have known that this kid who was making these songs would have this response so many years later and that they would mean so much to people. So for me, that’s why every time I jump on stage I’m really like a little kid, like, in a toy shop, just like, wow this is amazing, and I’ve actually got some songs that I can actually play that people know, it’s

wicked” The concept of the pool party is a a relatively new phenomenon, the market continues to evolve and what the majority of the younger Ibiza crowd want now is pool parties during the day: “They want to come and enjoy this moment when the sun is shining and hear good music. I just think that all we’ve done is just elevated what a pool party really is. I’ve been to all the places on the island, it’s just different, and now it’s like wow we’ve got something very special here” And what does Craig David like most about Ibiza? “There’s a real magic to the island. I know people say that for a lot of different reasons, but I can feel the spiritual, meditative side of it. The energy of the island when you step in you feel like something’s resonating and that you’re in the right place as a human being. And then there’s the other side of it, obviously there’s the beautiful culture and the food and people, and there’s beautiful places. On the music side of things there’s just something about the culture and the people love music in so many different ways here and I think that the greatest thing over the last couple of years is that R&B and Hip Hop and more slightly alternative styles of house music and EDM are starting to really infiltrate in some way, so the mix up is great. But yes, I love coming here, it’s wicked” In 2022 there really is so much to choose from in Ibiza for music lovers of all tastes, styles and venues, it’s going to be an unforgettable summer. When the bassline drops you’ll need more than 7 days to rise and fall, there’s nothing like this. So before walking away fill me in for a rewind rendezvous with who you are, what’s your flava ain’t giving up anytime soon!

Así que escucha “When the bassline drops you’ll need more than 7 days to rise and fall, there’s nothing like this. MEET LAUREN MACKIN THE NEW GENERATION OF COCO’S DELI Lauren Mackin is well known on the island - and indeed elsewhere around the world - for her YouTube channel, @JustAmyLauren, on which she publishes her “Workouts with a View”. Following the success of her channel and to offer her followers on the island a more rounded experience, Lauren has recently taken over Coco’s Deli in Portals Nous. I sat down with her to find out a bit more about what she does and what made her take the plunge to buy a business on the island…. By Ben Mulvey

So how did Lauren decide to go from YouTube exercise guru to cafe owner? Coco’s Deli has been established in Portals Nous for over six years and has become the go-to lunch spot for those looking for something wholesome and nutritious but also delicious and home-cooked. Lauren was one of these people that spent many an afternoon working from the terrace whilst chatting to the previous owner, Chloe, and managing her Instagram and YouTube pages. When Chloe decided to sell the business, Lauren jumped at the chance to own her favourite spot on the island.

“Nutrition and exercise are so important, and it sounds obvious, but they really do go handin-hand,” she says.

From a quick glance through Lauren’s Instagram page, it is clear to see that she is not one to sit still. Combining fitness, travel and food to build a brand that she lives and breathes, her several thousand followers are keen to know what she is up to. Her “Workouts with a View” have taken place in beautiful locations around the world and are designed to give her followers all of the workouts they need but with an inspirational background to enjoy. “I wanted to do something different with my workouts. Anyone can place a yoga mat and a camera down but I think it’s important to do something different and something that inspires people”, she tells me. “Why not work out somewhere stunning?” 10 | CELEBRITY

Lauren’s YouTube channel has something for everyone and is designed to help people of any fitness level. You can do as much or as little as you want of her workouts, the important thing is that you are doing them and Lauren’s positive can-do attitude is undoubtedly guaranteed to spur you on. As someone who struggles to motivate himself to exercise or eat healthily, it is often difficult to watch these types of videos without feeling bad about not doing more but Lauren has an approachable and empathetic way of speaking to her clients and her audience that doesn’t come across as patronising. She cares about what she does and believes that the mental health benefits of exercise can often far outweigh the physical ones.

Since taking over, Lauren hasn’t changed huge amounts as everything was good to go and working well as it was. A few personal touches show her personality, and the smoothie menu now includes some of her own unique creations and there are some new dishes on the menu. The usual breakfasts, healthy lunches and snacks are still very much part of the draw to Coco’s and locals and visitors alike will continue to flock there for a healthy treat, a chat with Lauren or even a cuddle with her cute dog, Tyga! Follow Lauren @JustAmyLauren on YouTube and Instagram. Visit Coco’s Deli on Monday-Friday between 9.00-16.30, Saturday from 9.30-15.00 and Sunday from 10.00-15.00. Check out some of their food on their Instagram @cocosdeli or send them a message to order your takeaway.

Sigue a Lauren @JustAmyLauren on YouTube and Instagram.

RHOC – The Kinsellas Welcome Baby Number Two It wasn’t long ago – fifteen months in fact – that I was writing an article with the news that Hanna and Martin Kinsella had welcomed their first baby, Max. Now, three months after the birth of their beautiful baby daughter, Kimia Rose, I caught up with the couple to find out how it all went… By Ben Mulvey

As always, catching up with Hanna and Martin is something we have to nail down in advance as this couple is always on the move. Between their two children, their multiple businesses and their TV career, there isn’t much time to spare. Recently, the couple shared the news that Hanna had given birth to a beautiful baby girl with the equally pretty name, Kimia Rose. Born a healthy 7lb 3oz on the 6th of May after a successful and stress-free C-Section – at least as stressfree as any birth can be – mum and baby are both doing well! “This time we were a bit more relaxed. We knew what to expect and we had it all booked in advance. Hanna was amazing and everything happened exactly as it should – it was perfect”, Martin tells me. So how do Hanna and Martin juggle being new parents for the second time in two years 12 | CELEBRITY

with their incredibly busy careers? With a lot of organisation, it would seem. Martin is back at work and seeing patients three days per week in his UK clinic whilst managing his other business commitments and Hanna, although still, of course, on maternity leave, is keeping up with her Icy Bear Dental range and had just resumed filming on the next series of ITV’s Real Housewives of Cheshire. “It’s actually really nice to be back at work and filming again to some degree,” Hanna tells me. “As I’m breastfeeding, I can’t be away for too long but having the chance to get out of the house and have a bit of time away is really doing me the world of good. Although, I am glad to be home with my babies afterwards.” Martin is back at work seeing his regular clients, many of whom you will see looking beautiful on his social media while at the

same time working hard to launch his Dr Kinsella skincare line to the masses. The product is available online but the official launch is on the 22nd of June and will make the whole range of skincare treatments more accessible to everyone. Those of you that do follow his social media accounts may have seen he also managed to squeeze in a stag party in Ibiza recently and will have noticed that he, and his friends, also find time to go to the gym! Don’t worry, Hanna and baby Kimia will be joining him for the wedding at the end of June while little Max spends some time with his grandparents. Meanwhile, Hanna has clearly embraced being a mother for the second time and is enjoying bonding with her new baby girl. “It’s been amazing to have another baby and Max has handled it so well,” she says.

WONDERING WHAT TO WEAR IN THE BALEARICS THIS SUMMER? ArWhether you’re in Mallorca or Ibiza this summer, what should be in your Balearic wardrobe or suitcase for 2022? Given how diverse these small islands are, they are home to postcard perfect beaches, luxury health retreats, restaurants and shops plus some of the world’s biggest clubs. The Balearics can be experienced in a number of ways. Here is your full guide to what to wear, putting together the perfect Balearic outfits for every occasion.

DENIM SHORTS My go-to no matter where I am, denim cut offs are the only bottoms you need. Slightly shredded and they must fit snuggly. Not too small, not too baggy. Of course, you can wear other shorts too, but make sure you have a good pair of blue or black denims. Simply add a boho blouse, boho cowboy boots, fedora hat and a sun kissed tan.

GLAM PAIR OF SUNNIES

of flats for the evening. It’s all about the Balearic boho vibe sandal or flip flop. Even though the Balearic Islands are some of the most glamorous places in Europe, they’re never at the expense of comfort. Choose a pair of glitzy flats that will go with everything. Think embellishment, bright pomp poms and tassels.

A SELECTION OF SWIMSUITS

Nothing takes a beach outfit up the ‘glam’ scale quicker than a pair of MASSIVE sunglasses and in 2022 – it’s all about ‘bigger is better’. Think plasma screens in every colour and you’ve got it sorted. Go to Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing, ASOS or Nasty Girl. I always wear oversized, reflective shades – they cover tired eyes AND hide your people watching habits.

Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in your swimwear, always have at least a couple of options. I love at least one bikini, plus a simple black swimsuit which can double up as a bodysuit. Paired with a pair of denim shorts, it’s an easy outfit for the beach parties that run into the night. This year, the red boob tube with leopard print bikini bottoms is the look to go for. Think mix and match. Add that essential kaftan too.

A BUM BAG

A HAT

I swore I’d never wear a bum bag… and then they became my best friend. Now, a bum bag is my go-to when I want to keep an eye on my valuables at all times. I have two Gucci belt-bags in red and black leather but there are plenty of great high street alternatives out there. So, pick up a fun one that you’ll enjoy wearing, leaving your hands free for… well, whatever you want to do with them. You know your phone is safe along with your door key and euros.

One thing is for sure, though: you’re going to want to wear a hat for that intense Spanish sun. Remember how aging and dangerous the sun is to the skin. Fedora, Trilby, floppy or Panama, a hat is the ultimate Balearic accessory.

COMFY TRAINERS OR WALKING SHOES As well as the nightlife and wellbeing scene that Ibiza is famous for, the White Isle and Mallorca have loads of great hiking trails and spots to explore. If you like to get out and about during the day, you’ll need a pair of comfy walking shoes or trainers. But if you’re partying as well, kill two birds with one stone and go for Nike Air Max in the brightest colours possible. The more acid colours, the better. Don’t forget ankle socks too. And plasters.

FLATS FOR EVENING Even if you’re used to wearing heels all the time, you need a pair 14 | CELEBRITY

EVENING WEAR If you’re clubbing, it’s going to be hot and sweaty so keep it cool and small. Little skater dresses or playsuits with little boots is the perfect look for Pacha or BCM.

DAYTIME POOLSIDE / SHOPPING It has to be the white boho maxi dress. It’s the ultimate Balearic look. Add your hat, sunnies and embellished sandals and you’ll look like a true islander. Remember white reflects the heat of the sun and it suits everyone.

BOHO BOOTS Without a beautiful pair of boho boots, no outfit is complete. From Cowboy boots to buckle boots, they must feature tan suede, colourful embroidery and those all-important tassels.

Celebrity “Nice To Meet You” Networking Event Returns The much-loved Celebrity Nice To Meet You event was back at the Maricel Hotel on Thursday May 26th and brought together some familiar faces from the magazine and some new ones that had come along to see what the event was all about.

After a welcome drink on the stunning terrace of the hotel, our guests made their way inside where Donna Suarez introduced the event, explained what Celebrity Nice To Meet You is, and spoke a bit about the magazine in general. Matthew Cull then took to the stage to speak about the latest news and updates with Celebrity Magazine and all of its associated businesses. Celebrity Nice To Meet You is the ideal opportunity to promote your business and each person in the room did just this by speaking for two minutes about themselves and their services. With plenty of laughter along the way, we learned about everybody in the room and it soon became apparent how many different and interesting businesses there are in Mallorca. When everyone had taken their turn to speak we all headed back onto the terrace for a drink at the bar and the networking part of the evening. Everyone mingled and chatted 18 | CELEBRITY

as they sipped their drink and admired the beautiful sea views. The food then came out and the chatting continued as the sun set over the terrace. The event was great fun, well received by all of our guests and plenty of introductions we made for business to be done.Until next time…

MALLORCA INSPIRATION FOR NOVELIST JEFFREY ARCHER Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare, better known as one of the world’s best-selling authors, Jeffrey Archer is a gracious host when I visit his striking Mallorcan home. An expansive villa built in the finest of taste and style. Mindful, his charming wife Mary tells me, of using mainly local craftsmen and materials. By Laura Stadler

“I fell in love with Mallorca from the very first time I came here and have been visiting the island for 30 years” he explained. “A close friend offered me his home in Mallorca to write one of my earlier books, and I fell in love with the island and have been coming here ever since. Finally, about 15 years ago, I decided to build my own home, but it took some time to find the perfect spot. It appears Mallorca offers him inspiration. “I confess that as my home in Cambridge faces the Urals, the first three months of the year are better spent in Mallorca than in the east of England. I enjoy the light and the beauty of the coastline of course – my writing room overlooks the Bay of Palma with the Tramuntana mountains in the distance. And I mustn’t forget the paella and the very good local wine.” Lord Archer has written 27 pacy and easy to read best-selling books, having sold an ever rising 250 million books, in 97 countries currently translated into 51 languages. Most created in the tranquillity and beauty of his Mallorcan office. “Each novel takes approximately a year – a thousand hours. During that time I visit Mallorca three times: for six weeks in 20 | CELEBRITY

January/February when I write the first draft, four weeks in March/April when I then work on the typed up manuscript, and two or three weeks in May/June. The editing can be done after that at my home in Cambridge. So by the time I leave Mallorca, 80% of the work is done. “I like the discipline of routine, so each morning (including weekends) I rise at 5.30am, go to my writing room and work from 6-8am. I then have breakfast and take a break, before going back to work at 10am until noon, when I do an hour’s walk before having lunch. Back to my writing room at 2pm until 4, when I relax for two hours, maybe read or catch up on the cricket. My final session is from 6pm until 8, which is mainly reading and correcting the day’s work. I then have a light supper and am in bed by 10pm.” Archer does not hammer away at a typewriter. Instead, he writes calmly in longhand, famous for often penning 14 drafts of each novel before he is satisfied. I was interested to learn how he crafts his highly enjoyable novels. “When I start a new book, I have a very rough outline in my mind, but it’s not unusual for the story to go in a totally different direction after only a few pages. And I believe inspiration is

a God-given gift, for which I’m grateful every day.” Archer while being a strong no-nonsense character, I discover is a lively raconteur; acting out amusing anecdotes complete with hand gestures and accents. His quick wit and banter recognisable in his fictional characters. Indeed, I wondered whether some characters in his books are taken from the wide variety of people he had encountered in his extraordinary life? “I consider it a great privilege to have met so many interesting people over the years, and I have to admit that their sometimes strange lives and fascinating insights do find their way onto the page – never as a novel, but often as the inspiration for a short story.” Currently, Archer is writing the much awaited sixth book in the William Warwick detective series. An unashamed fan I wanted to know how many more to expect. “Book five of the William Warwick novels is called Next in Line, where William is a superintendent and working in royalty protection. That book will come out in September and I’m currently writing book six – to be released next year. But I can’t tell you the title at this early stage! William Warwick will progress from a constable on the beat to Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Assuming I live long enough to write all eight novels.” Archer is an ever-youthful Aries who belies his 82 years. Perhaps a legacy of his athletic past, exercise and careful eating habits. I was keen to know of his favourite Mallorcan restaurants. “Once I’m here, I’m afraid I rarely venture out other than for my daily walk, particularly when I’m writing the first draft. On later visits I might go out to dinner at Cap Rocat as it’s so close, or very occasionally visit friends who live in Pollensa.” Did he have any advice to anyone wishing to live or buy in Mallorca? “It’s hard to advise whether to buy a little flat in Palma or find a piece of land overlooking the sea. I’m in a Spanish enclave on land overlooking the sea, and that suits me, but might not suit everyone.”

Certainly Lord Archer and his wife Mary, a lady of grace, elegance and accomplished academic wisdom, who met as young students at Oxford, appear to thrive on our island. NB Jeffrey Archer is published in Spain: books by HarperCollins, but also in e-books by Saga Egmont, who are just catching up with publishing the Clifton Chronicles

CELEBRITY | 21

THE ST REGIS MARDAVALL MALLORCA RESORT: ARABELLA SPA The St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort is a five-star hotel in the southwest of the island that is the epitome of luxury, style and relaxation. With 125 rooms, a luxury spa, a stunning swimming pool and its very own Michelin-star restaurant, Es Fum, this hotel certainly stands out from the crowd in Mallorca, and indeed in Spain. By Ben Mulvey

Aside from the hotel’s rooms and dining options, the in-house Arabella Spa has made a name for itself in its own right as one of Europe’s best, and largest, spas. The 4700m² spa boasts eleven treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a salt pool, Jacuzzi, and a jet shower for guests to relax and indulge in. There is also a Finnish sauna (90ºC), a steam sauna with aroma (42ºC -45ºC), an ice cave (10ºC), and a salt sauna (37ºC-40ºC) that all surround the salt pool, each one offering different types of relaxation and health benefits. The Arabella Spa embraces a holistic concept that combines the ancient healing methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine with wellknown Western treatments. It does this through a bespoke spa programme that gives guests access to an array of different 22 | CELEBRITY

treatments. Each spa programme is tailored to the guest with a focus on anti-pain, detox and slimming, anti-stress or beauty treatments. The whole process begins with a body composition consultation to determine the guest’s physical condition in terms of muscle, water and fat percentage. These tests give the qualified team of therapists, spa specialists and Chinese doctors an idea of what treatments they can offer and what would be beneficial for each guest. Interestingly, these tests are so simple yet offer a great deal of information - guests stand on a machine with their feet on a metal sensor and their hands-on another for a few seconds and the machine does the rest. Another part of the initial consultation involves lifestyle questions that are intended to find out what each guest needs. These

questions are to determine eating habits, general well-being, and stress levels and to give the therapists more of a guide on how best to treat each and every guest. The spa programmes include treatments such as classic or oriental body therapies (ayurvedic treatments from India, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage, Thai massage) or treatments from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each programme is interchangeable meaning that guests can pick and choose treatments from each one to make their own personalised treatments. Guests can choose between a two-day, five-day or week-long programme and all programmes include full access to the Arabella Spa and access to all of the classes that take place every day including yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, meditation, and Aqua Gym.

Once the chosen spa programme has been completed, guests are invited for a final consultation where the specialists will look at the initial consultation results and compare them. Here, guests can see how they have benefited from their spa or medical treatments as well as from physical activities and mental exercises and analyse how they move on with their ongoing health plan. These plans are designed to kickstart a health plan, reset the body and the mind and highlight any issues that should be dealt with in order to live a healthy lifestyle whilst emphasising the importance of taking time out for ourselves. All of these packages are available to residents, visitors and hotel guests and the spa is open to adults only between May - October from 8 am - 9 pm. PERSONAL REVIEW

by Celebrity Magazine Publisher, Donna Suarez

My friend Beccy Bellafont-Evans of Mallorca Solutions and I decided to try one of the holistic spa programmes at Arabella Spa. First, Spa Director, Tami Le, interviewed us and set the individual goals for both of us. For me, the main goal was to give my body and mind a little break, to relieve the persistent tension in my neck and shoulders, cleanse and detoxify my body, and maybe even lose a little weight. After a detailed consultation, Tami put together a customised 5-day-detox-anti-stress programme for me. On the first day of the programme, I had my very own personal trainer who designed an individualised workout plan for me and gave me some valuable nutritional advice. My spa programme also included five 80-minute spa treatments. I was especially thrilled by the Lymphodrainer. This highly effective drainage device with cupping glasses stimulates the metabolism and improves the structure of the skin. I also experienced a very special moment in the private yoga class: Do you know that the body and breathing are closely linked and can evoke deep emotions? Beccy, on the other hand, was particularly interested in overhauling her general health as well as relieving stress. Therefore, Dr Lu

Hasten to say we have both joined as members and can use the facilities at a special resident’s price and we will most definitely be booking another spa programme soon!

WAIT ... WHAT? IBIZA with DJ

TWO QUEER DJ’S WORK IBIZA OPENINGS!

Luxuriating poolside, chit-chatting about fashion and swapping tunes, DJ BUTCH QUEEN (a fav of the UK’s queer scene) and I have just completed a stellar weekend of Wait….What? Ibiza Opening Partys and we got to talking about how there’s a considerable shift in how clubs, promoters and DJs are conducting business post-Covid. The industry big boys and girls are reaching out and encouraging new queer talent, smaller, underground parties such as WWI to collaborate putting quality and relatability before quantity and money. This means that they are delivering what clubbers really want, an experience that is relatable to all and reflects what really is going on in society because the powerful and growing queer community coupled with the open-mindedness of Gen Z is where the future of clubbing truly lies, not just replicating generic club concepts across Ibiza, Dubai and New York. Plus, you can’t replicate the essence of an underground club night. Recently I had the great pleasure of meeting and working with two people who get it with bells on! Gemma Charters, Director of Brand & Events at O Beach and DJ/Producer Antton who is the Creative Manager of the new nightclub, OUT Ibiza San Antonio where we had our WWI GO XTRA Party with our Drag Queens, Guest DJs Scott Gray & BUTCH QUEEN who brought his incredible energy and music plus me going b2b with WWI resident DJ Agent KoKo. DJ Antton has played Clandestino Space, Melon Bomb, Es Vive, Cafe del Mar, and Ushuaia and he wanted to have a club that supports and brings to the forefront the Ibiza seasoned DJs. Antton is also committed to bringing in new talent & fresh underground parties such as WWI which is very much in line with our ethos of bringing seasoned and new DJs together - watch this space for future WWI collabs 26 | CELEBRITY

with OUT! In the meantime, get back to the heart of the Ibiza underground clubbing scene and visit OUT Ibiza. It’s IBIZA PRIDE Season June 11th - 18th and WWI are on it like a rocket with a pre-party on 10th June at Sunrise Bar, our DJ’s on the main stage for both Opening & Closing Ibiza Pride Galas and we will be hosting an official closing party at Bam-BuKu Beach Club (the little sister of O Beach). We couldn’t be more thrilled & thankful for the support shown to us by Gemma Charters at OBeach. Gemma is very much

on the side of the new breed of DJs coming from the UK/Ibiza queer scene and the OBeach ethos of inclusion plus their enthusiastic involvement in Ibiza Pride 2022 certainly has us excited to see what the OBeach Group have up their sleeve for 2023. Our Ibiza Pride Closing Party will see the return of DJ BUTCH QUEEN, Director of Ibiza Pride DJ San Balibrea, Banana Laser and the WWI Resident DJs will be serving up tunes so check our WWI socials for all the information relating to Ibiza Pride 2022. What we need in our lives other than music and clubs is CAKE and in Ibiza, The Cake Lady (as she is fondly referred to) from The Cake Studio has got it covered..in CAKE! Starting full time in 2015. The Cake Studio Ibiza supplies bespoke cake creations with clients that range from superstar DJs and film stars to your next-door neighbour. Extravagant and outrageous is what The Cake Lady does best, I know cause I’ve scoffed, ordered and had a love affair with her creations for many years. Awardwinning for the last three years, she is a busy bee so bookings should be done at least a month in advance, especially for weddings. A personal friend of mine, I set you a challenge in ordering the most extraordinary cake from The Cake Lady, as if she hasn’t got enough on her cake stand - sorry Cake Lady!

Talk The Talk Born and raised just outside of Chicago and with almost 20 years of experience Kristine Julia brings special musical knowledge and taste to truly move a party. Maintaining loyalty to her roots she creates a diverse dance floor atmosphere with a variety of related styles. Playing in very different scenarios over the years, Kristine Julia is able to read a crowd and flow with it symbiotically.

Hello, and welcome to the first of my series of insightful conversations between the movers and shakers of the electronic music industry and myself, Kristine Julia. I am delighted to have house music legend and innovator KERRI CHANDLER here today. KJ: Thanks for taking the time to speak with me. Let’s talk about your new album, ‘Spaces and Places’ coming out in October on your label. KC: Yeah, on Kaoz Theory. I’ve been working on this project for about four or five years now. The only reason it hasn’t come on earlier is because of Covid. I’d have to be on tour to make the album really work because I’m going back to the same places I did all of these songs. And there are about 24 different songs at 24 different clubs from around the world. Everything from DC10, Ministry of Sound, Magazzini Generali, Lux, and Rex Club in Paris. Clubs in New York and in California. I mean, it’s been a hell of a journey. KJ: Amazing! You’ve gone deeply into creating the sensation of actually being in these spaces by writing, recording and performing in each one. What was your inspiration for that? KC: It’s the combination of a lot of things. A lot of these clubs I have years and years of relationships with and, in my own way, it’s kind of paying homage or tribute to each of these clubs. It’s like coming home to each place. And each place is a little bit different with the people that I see a lot. With District Eight, every time I go back to Ireland, it’s like going back to the family. My great grandmother’s Irish, so it’s just it’s one of my favourite places to be. So for me, it’s like going to each place and having family there. Watching the changes, some for the better some not for the better. But it’s just a fun journey going into each place and creating sonically something in each space that makes sense for what I feel about the place. KJ: It’s wonderful how you’ve connected generations with places and spaces that are so important to you. KC: That’s why I named it ‘Spaces and Places’ like all the spaces and places I’ve gone. Like in Subclub, just going back to the club and creating things that are wrapped around that space; I had such an amazing time there. And each club was so welcoming, like ‘We’d love for you to come in

28 | CELEBRITY

and do it!’ You know, I get to sit in the middle of the room just making music up in one of my favourite places. I don’t know if anyone’s actually done anything quite like this. I’m an engineer anyway at heart, so I had a lot of fun doing it. KJ: Now that you’re back on tour and you’ve been doing this a very long time, what drives you to go the extra mile to keep yourself at this level? KC: Do you know what it is? I love it. It’s like breathing. I mean, I can’t imagine not doing it. And I said the day that I don’t feel the energy like when I was thirteen years old putting the record on, putting the song on and listening and enjoying it that way, if I don’t feel the same way or better than I did when I was a kid playing records, that’s the day I’m going to stop. And it hasn’t happened yet. KJ: What would you say to aspiring musicians, DJs, and performers? KC: Things take time but reach for the stars.

with Kristine Julia decir, un larguísimo recorrido.

THE MAN-WELL CUP The power of sport is incredible. Despite the elements, Saturday the 23rd April saw ‘The Street Angels’ take on ‘The Yachties’ in the Premier Charity Football Event which was graciously hosted at Sporting Son Ferrers’ Campo de futbol (Rob Croll, RMA). Hundreds braved the driving cold winds, rain and eventual sunshine to perpetuate a suitably warm atmosphere in aid of raising awareness for men’s well-being. By Steve Burge

Entitled ‘The Man-Well Cup’; the event was the brainchild of Gary Napier from The GAP Counselling. Organised by Rachel Wilson and supported by IBEX Insurance, The Anchor Bar (Sant Agusti), Red Hot Branding, Celebrity Magazine and Mallorca Shores, these businesses all joined forces to help raise funds and awareness for worthy causes. During the course of events, Iris from Cancer Support Group, Nick Entwisle from Yachting Gives Back and Sarah Napier from The Street Angels all gave resonating speeches in keeping with the spirit of the day, promoting men’s health and general wellbeing in the Balearics. The match itself brought together two rival teams of mixed nationalities. Amateur footballers from across the global yachting community and all over the islands that predominantly play for fun. That said, the standard was high. The battle was hard fought and loaded with incident. The Yachties drew first blood with a heavily contested penalty,

tucked away from the spot precisely by Captain Allan James. From the kick-off, the Angels immediately levelled up with a wonderfully crafted opener for ‘Man of the Match’ and hat-trick hero, Richard Ford, to slot away. The third goal came from a long range driven effort from outside the box by some humble guy. This set the tone for the rest of the match and despite the Yachties hard fought efforts, the game ended 9-3 to The Street Angels. Captain and goal scorer Craig Dorans proudly lifted ‘The Man-Well Cup’ for the very first time to the pitch-side tune of ‘We are the Champions’ while his team celebrated with their medals. A plethora of local businesses, keen to showcase their support for the event; Med 54, The Anchor, Hair Waves (El Toro), Elefante (Santa Catalina), Bar Rositas (Calvia), Russell Martin Academy, Ferrers Café (Son Ferrer), Stepps (Santa Ponsa), Gemini Salon (Magaluf), Palma Jump Parques de Trampolines (Palma) all contributed with

generous prize donations for the raffle give-away and the Children’s Penalty Kick Competition, which was won by Teddy McKinnon Cole at just 12 years old. After the game there was a free BBQ and goody bags. Cameron Cull Media even provided postmatch video highlights. The day was about more than just football. It united the community and showed how sport can bridge divides, even at the toughest of times. Giving back, helping the vulnerable, detecting cancer early and encouraging men to open up more and discuss their issues are completely synonymous with the healthy living ethos the Balearics portray. For an inaugural event, it could not have gone any better or been more entertaining. There were some really positive conversations, and we are already looking forward to the next one in what appears to be a certified legacy event! If you would like to get involved or been affected by any of the issues raised in this article please contact; gnapier@thegapenterprises.com. CELEBRITY | 29

LAURA STADLER INTERVIEWS

MARK EDWARDS OF FACES OF MALLORCA Faces of Mallorca is an extraordinary book that conveys the soul of Mallorca through its captivating photos and chats with exceptional Mallorquins. Written by Mark Julian Edwards and Stephanie Schulz, it tells the story of Mallorca through local Mallorquin’s eyes, imparting a fascinating insight into Mallorcan life. A wonderful timeless book that I highly recommend. I met with Mark, who captured these inspired photos, to discuss this widely acclaimed book.

What inspired you to write the book? “Personally, I have always I loved seeing how people’s stories could be captured simply with a photo and a small amount of text. I remember growing up in the UK, and when my parents were reading the Sunday newspapers, I would always reach for the magazine section, where I could dive into people’s stories. Soon after I moved to Mallorca, Steffi and I became friends and discovered that we shared the love of storytelling. I had felt that it was quite difficult getting to know the local Mallorquins, and we both felt that whilst there had been many books written about Mallorca, there were very few that sought to tell its story from the Mallorquins’ perspective. We decided to make a book of which both locals and visitors would be proud of; that’s why we agreed to have it in four languages, English, Spanish, Mallorquín and German.”

and out of the book and very quickly get a sense of the island. The photos tell the story, so we didn’t want to waste words.” How did you work together? “I took the photos and we shared the writing. Everything was a collaboration. Whilst I took the shots, Steffi would often be suggesting the angles or managing the lighting. We also have quite different writing styles and this creative tension helped with the end product. After living here for several years, Steffi already had a circle of Mallorquin friends, speaking the language fluently, which was incredibly helpful.”

A German and a Brit writing a book about Mallorquins, that sounds like a rather difficult task “I know, but actually, we faced no resistance at all. We even felt appreciated. I guess it was surprising for people that these “outsiders” had a true desire to understand and tell the real story of the island.”

Who are some of your favourite characters? “That’s such a hard question to answer, Laura! It is almost impossible to choose, even though there are always some people who stand out for some reason or other. Sometimes, people’s stories would move us, make us laugh or sometimes we just felt such a nice warmth. I think the most surreal moment for me was photographing Toni Nadal. As I was running around the court taking photos, it was incredible to think that this was the same court where Toni had coached Rafa who now has 21 Grand Slam titles. Steffi always remembers our encounter with the nuns of Santa Clara as very moving and special.”

I love that it has a coffee table book feel. What made you decide on this format? “From the outset we wanted it to be a photo book. We wanted people to be able to dip in

What did you learn? “For a start, we learnt that anything is possible. The book began with an idea. If you had said to us a few years back that we would

have written a photo book, endorsed by so many high profiles, including the Lonely Planet, the BBC and Toni Nadal, we would not have believed you. Neither of us had ever written a book. We also learnt about setting a vision and making other people part of it. People got the idea and concept of the book immediately and after a few interviews; folks were actually asking us to be in the book! Perhaps the biggest lesson was around collaboration. Steffi and I are quite clear that the book would not have happened without the other person. Sometimes I feel we put such huge pressure on ourselves to be the leader in our lives, whereas actually having a friend to share the burden – and creative ideas – helps a lot.” What makes you most proud about the book? “If you place the book in one hand and quickly flick through all the images in the other, you’ll see a diverse set of characters, offering readers the essence of Mallorca and what it means to be Mallorquin. This was really our ambition, to let the photos and short, meaningful texts tell the story.” Faces of Mallorca is available at all major book stores in Mallorca, Stanfords in the UK and on Amazon in English, Spanish, German and Mallorquin and on Instagram at facesofmallorca.

MENORCA MOMENTS

by Joanna Young joanna@celebritymallorca.es

in assosiation with

Ibiza Meets Menorca My enjoyable 10-minute walk to my shop in Plaza del Principe often includes a morning ‘café con leche’ or an evening ‘G & T’ at the stylish Soho Menorca* bar which is owned and run by Mariana and Oscar. It was able to open its doors in October 2021 after a major refurbishment despite all the Covid disruption. Personally designed by Marianna it is like a luxurious 1920’s speakeasy – think rich turquoise velvet, art deco mirrors and lots of gold! I am a people- watcher and from my favourite window seat I observed how the premises next door were undergoing change and being curious I promptly introduced myself to Jeremy and Sharon Lamont Norris the owners. Their new, exciting business

36 | CELEBRITY

concept ‘The Flat Gallery’* is where they source, exhibit and sell Art, NFT’s* and collectables. The opening night took place with renowned Valencian artist Eduardo Bermejo not only displaying some of his amazing art but also hand painting a bass guitar during the evening for auction. An eclectic mix of artists also displayed some of their fascinating works. It seemed the whole island turned out to support this innovative creative space and the after party carried on well into the early hours. Another of my observations was that of a flamboyantly dressed ‘man about town’ either cycling, riding an electric scooter or strolling around with a unique style that certainly makes him stand out from the

crowd. My curiosity aroused I soon got chatting to Vaughan ‘Afrika’ Stanford. Our Ibiza readers will no doubt recognise the name as he is an ‘Ibizan’ legend from Pacha since working there in the early 80’s, one of the top podium dancers at the time as the island became world famous amongst elite party lovers. He moved to Menorca a couple of years ago but his business interests there still include The Original Funky Room at Pacha and Babylon Beach, Santa Eulalia. Vaughan’s life experiences could easily fill a book! When asked why he chose Menorca to live he says it’s down to the stylish living, friendly people, better value and it’s authenticity. Jeremy has known Vaughan since working in Ibiza when he held the coveted position as resident DJ in Space. One winter they coincided working gigs in Stuttgart and their friendship grew. Jeremy eventually returned to the UK to be with his first love Sharon (they met at 16) and established a stable family life. A couple of years ago it felt right to return to Spain. Having spent two years travelling around the mainland looking for the right location to settle it was on a visit to see Vaughan that they just instantly knew it was Menorca they wanted to call home. The Ibiza connection continues as whilst planning the after party in Soho in conversation it turned out that Marianna and Oscar had run the Macadam Beach Club, Playa d’en Bossa from 2000 until 2005. Vaughan, Jeremy, Marianna and Oscar were all working hard (and partying) on our sister island at the same time! I asked Marianna the same question as to why the move to Menorca, she says it felt a safe, healthy place for family life. The opportunity to expand their new business as they also have a large basement event space means they are confident of future growth and potential.

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES

by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts

THE SOLLER VALLEY LOOKS FORWARD TO SEEING YOU… The summer is here and the energy is back in the Soller Valley. The Covid years have left their mark but we are all now ready to embrace the sun, the people and our lives. In the Soller Valley, the teams are busy with their plans. The staff looking after our historical commemorations have their dates to organise. This is particularly significant in late August when the St Bartholomew Fiesta takes pride of place for a week. This is one of the times when Sollerics living in other places return to claim their town back for its fiesta. A joyful time of local tradition, music, partying and fun.

38 | CELEBRITY

Those charged with delivering tourism fiestas are very busy. Concerts, live music, drive-in movies, local dancing and much more occupy our space daily. From now till the end of September, you will find plenty of wonderful events in Soller, the Port of Soller, Fornalutx and Deia. The estate agents of the valley are very busy as so many want a slice of Soller and the Port. Buyers say they want to live amongst the working heart of the place and not in a mansion with a big wall and security outside the door. To wander the streets and just join others in the square, watching the world go by, seems to be at the heart of what most buyers want. The summer sets the scene and the experiences travel home with many. They, in turn, are on the phone to the agents to

organise a week of house viewing. They have had a holiday that they didn’t want to come to an end and now they want so much more. Early autumn is set to be full of this year’s buyers doing just that and joining the celebrities who have just made that choice. Soller is being discovered by a new generation every year. The vibrant heart of the place explodes in the new music and experiences they bring with them. Our little place in the universe is actually ‘cutting edge’ (in a gentle sort of way). Come and see us soon…

Venid a visitarnos pronto…

JASBIR: BRINGING INDIAN FOOD TO THE ISLAND Twenty years ago, finding an Indian restaurant in Mallorca was no easy task which, for the expats that are partial to their weekly curry fix, was a major downside of life in Spain. Now, scattered around the island are lots of Indian restaurants but it was Jasbir who was one of the first to open a top-quality Indian restaurant in Palma….and that was just the beginning! By Ben Mulvey

Taste of India on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma has long been on the top of many residents’ takeaway lists (mine included!) thanks to its superbly fragrant Indian cuisine made with the freshest ingredients. This restaurant is also ideal to visit for a nice evening meal with great views over the twinkling masts that are docked in the huge marina opposite. The dishes are beautifully presented, the menu varied and the service speedy, efficient and friendly. For those familiar with Indian cuisine, the traditional favourites like a chicken vindaloo, a lamb rogan josh and prawn bhuna are on the menu as well as all of the well-loved accompaniments and rice dishes. There are also some special chef ’s dishes that are definitely worth a try - and if you like it hot, be careful what you wish for as they will do it for you! 40 | CELEBRITY

Following the success of Taste of India, Jasbir branched out further into the expat community by opening another Taste of India in Santa Ponsa. This second restaurant has proved just as successful as the first one with residents and tourists flocking to enjoy the food and the terrace. In fact, so successful was this new opening that Jasbir saw that the appetite for Indian food was so great in the area that he opened two more eateries: Tandoori Station and Bombay. Both places serve the same food in a more relaxed setting and have both been very busy since they have opened and look like they are there to stay. So with four Indian restaurants under his belt, it could be assumed that Jasbir would take a step back and let his restaurants run themselves after twenty years of tireless work. “My success has been because I work all of

the hours needed for my businesses,” he told me. “And I will not stop yet.” It is no surprise then that he has had another restaurant to his collection and opened something a little different - an Italian restaurant. Piccolo di Mare is Jasbir’s first restaurant that does not serve Indian food which some may consider a risk. But, based on his previous success, I have no doubt that it will be a success. Jasbir promises that the restaurant will serve traditional Italian dishes and pizzas straight from the pizza oven that guests can enjoy on the terrace. The same care and attention that he has given to all of his other restaurants will be applied here and the staff have been ready and waiting to serve everyone since it opened on the 3rd of June!

If you’re searching for an authentic, delicious Indian meal then look no further than any one of Jasbir’s restaurants. They are open daily and also available for takeaway and delivery.

“Y no voy a parar ahora.”

Island Spiritdy & Soul Mind, Bo

with Amanda Morgan

The transformation of one’s self means to acknowledge and then change yourself from within and with-out. For me and the ones I work with this means mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and energetically. It happens when either you are in or pass through a difficult situation in your life, or you initiate it yourself to bring about a meaningful beginning and life changing journey. In most cases, you regenerate your soul towards bringing this change in yourself. Transforming and regeneration of your soul is not easy. Shamanic Energy Work is one of the most powerful ways for Self-Transformation. We do this in several ways. For more information contact me via my website www.jamievida.com. As well as this we need to start with some basic habits. Breathe and slow down for self-transformation is essential, sometimes we may pressurize ourselves a little too much in this process This can be the last thing that will help you adopt positive changes. Find the right crowd. It is almost always easier going through things with other people. This is why I started our Facebook Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/exceptionalhealth Join us as we make a difference. The Unsung Heroes: Superfoods And Super Supplements Weekly Wisdom Once you’ve started on the path to holistic health and wellbeing and have begun to rid yourself of environmental toxins, the next step is to make sure your diet consists of organic, nutrient-rich, and information-dense foods. Superfoods and supplements instruct your genes to repair the organs and systems in your body and restore brain health, and can all but eliminate your risk for Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, and a host of other diseases of civilization. Some foods are considered superfoods because of their high phytonutrient content and the quality of information they provide to your DNA. As a rule, the more colourful a fruit or vegetable, the richer it is in phytonutrients and the greater its power as a superfood. Self transformation summary The transformation of one’s self means to acknowledge and then change yourself from within and with-out. It takes a lot more courage and guts to face. Sometimes you must face it by yourself. While Self is the one who asks the questions, and partly Self is the one who can give you some of those answers, it can be one of the toughest and most important explorations in your life. It is coming within. Discovering who you really are. Therefore, self-transformation is not an option, it is fundamental to our existence and transition to Homo-Luminous beings. sI land Spirit Horoscopes for Summer 2022 ARIES After having dealt with more than one thing at a time and overcome many obstacles, you will finally see your goals coming to fruition this summer. Aries, you may experience a somewhat difficult reencounter with someone, but this summer will be full of adventure, you will be a hit wherever you go, with the sun charging your batteries with extremely positive energy. You will enjoy passionate but brief love affairs. Aries, this is not a time for commitment. There will be surprises at all levels. A lot of health and vitality for you this summer, as well as romance, passion, extra earnings at work. It would seem that your problems are all behind you now! TAURUS At last good fortune has arrived for you this first summer month. Setbacks will be in the past and you will be in fine form. You will be changing your attitude and backing down occasionally, which will be good for your spirit: become more flexible. New opportunities will be cropping up this summer. Remember that you cannot replace your loved ones with anything or anyone. But you must be open to the wonderful opportunities that will come up for you this summer, do not hold on to deep set ideas. Chase after what you love the most and many chances will come up for you to choose from. If you know what you want and follow your intuition, towards the end of the summer you may be having a stable relationship, born out of some summer romance. As for health, you will improve in terms of energy levels. Seawater purifies you and the sun fills you with vitamins that will improve both your mood and your overall health. In terms of finance, no great changes here. Willpower is not your strongpoint; if you try to be more organised and willing, your finances will improve after the summer. GEMINI Dear twin, this summer you will win many hearts and achieve anything you put your mind to at all levels. Summer romances and affairs will not be long term but you will really enjoy the partying, the madness and the passion. If you want to have that stable relationship you have dreamed of, the time has come

to open up to new opportunities and take a good look at who you’ve got in front of you. You will have many chances and might miss the right one because you were not paying attention. Cancer, listen to your heart and follow your intuition. A great opportunity comes your way during these summer months, either in terms of love or work and finances: be on the lookout and don’t let it get away! LEO Summer will be full of chances to live life to the most, with travelling, parties and many plans that will fill you with adrenalin and joy. This is not the time to find the great love of your life but it is the time for adventure. But you must have your head screwed on straight and stop fantasising or having expectations that will only lead to disappointment. Enjoy what summer brings to you and use your solar energy to have fun and fill yourself up with joy. New times are on their way: you have finally taken the plunge and shown your courage. This summer you must assimilate the changes you have made in your life, with pleasure and a good attitude, but always with that hint of melancholy and nobility that characterises your great lion heart. VIRGO Virgo, the time has come to address the problems that have caused endless sleepless nights, and this summer new opportunities will come your way to leave them behind once and for all. During these summer months you will want to be surrounded by your family and friends, leading a normal life with people you trust and who provide you with warmth and serenity. Not the time for great adventures, but for enjoying the day to day. No big changes are in store for you this summer, Virgo; neither in terms of health nor love, but solutions that have been a long time coming will be at your doorstep. Enjoy your day to day life! LIBRA Your hard work has been worth it and you will begin to reap the benefits this summer. You will be focusing on the positive and forgetting about any setbacks of previous months or any unfair situations that have affected your life: as a Libra, you find injustice hard to swallow. This summer will bring love to you, so if you are in a relationship you must control yourself and ignore any admirers; but if you don’t have a partner, you might start something this summer that could turn into something more serious. This summer for you will be a total surprise, where decisions must be made at all levels, both material and sentimental, with important issues and choices to consider. Place them all on your scales and choose what is best for you. SCORPIO Focus on what is important, Scorpio. You want to do a million things and more than you can cope with, which will make you feel overwhelmed in all aspects

of your life. You know what your priorities, goals and dreams are. But don’t lose sight of them because new opportunities will come into your life. This summer will be filled with new things, lots of plans, but focus on what’s important. As for love, you will have a stable relationship with summer which might turn into the love of your life if you still haven’t found it. But rein in your jealousy and possessiveness and do not show the passion inside of you right at the start, just hold it in a bit – even if it is hard for you, let your magnetism loose little by little, surprising all those around you by stages, instead of unleashing all that unbridled passion you have inside of you all at once. Make an effort to communicate and to express yourself to others and things will work well for you in all areas. SAGITTARIUS Aware of how breakups make you feel and how hard it is to find people who love to share it all, you are no longer looking for anyone and wanting to enjoy life free of any restraints. However, this summer may have a surprise in store for you, and you might find a person with whom you feel great during these summer months. As for work and finances, you may experience a minor setback which will be solved by the end of the summer. In terms of health, relax a lot this summer and recharge your batteries. CAPRICORN You are going to feel great this summer, desired and sought after by everyone, the life and soul of the party and enjoying all manner of events like never before, surrounded by many friends and lovers that will truly boost your self- esteem and your ego. Studying and hard work will have reaped success thanks to your capacity for organisation and your willpower, so you will be able to party in the full splendour and freedom of summer. AQUARIUS Aquarius, you are still not clear about what you want in life, you are volatile and this makes it hard. Any flings will remain just flings and jobs will be changing if you don’t get learn to commit. This is not a criticism: on the contrary, but you must understand that your independence and your comfort zones do not mesh well with the idea you have of a soulmate. You want a stable relationship but not comfortable losing the independence and freedom you love so much. So this summer it all falls on you, on what you are willing to give and take. PISCES Come on, Pisces, this is your time! This summer you will be reaping the fruits of our labour, and many joys and surprises await you. Luck will be by your side throughout the summer. June will be fairly intense for you. Summer arrives full of positive and highly intense feelings and you will feel very grateful for everything. Many lovely things will happen for you this summer that will make you grow. Good fortune at all levels for you, Pisces.

Leo, y nuevas etapas llegan a tu vida, por fin te has lanzado y has tomado esas decisiones mostrando tu valentía.

BOATS, BIKES AND AUTOMOBILES by Hamish Goddard

It’s Showtime at last! With a small bit of rebranding and a large heap of visitors, the Palma International Boat Show was a stunning and deserved success in 2022, after a very lean couple of years for all the obvious reasons. In 2020, we were all under lock and key and in 2021, there were few international travelers and buckets of rain. The event in 2022 was finally worthy of its billing and was the first major European boat show for a few years. Formerly known as the Palma Superyacht Show, the harbour in front of the old town brought together 276 participating

companies, 264 beautiful boats and more than 32,000 visitors over four days of glorious spring sunshine, void of any restrictions at last. Presenting some of the best superyachts over 24m in length that currently exist in the brokerage and charter market, another big draw was the ‘Superyacht Village’, with a wide range of land-based exhibitors, showcasing shiny new wallet-emptying toys and kit to take onto the water in our forthcoming Med season. Is there a better place for a superyacht show anywhere at all? With the backdrop of the old town dominated by the cathedral, the

glittering Med over the wall, the countless fantastic bars and restaurants, all within an easy jaunt of an event that had a tangible got-out-of-jail feeling after everything we’ve been through. We deserved this one…

Goodwood Prior to the Palma Show, I headed off quickly to the UK and the Goodwood Road Racing Club’s Members Meeting. The GRRC hosts three major events each year, the Members Meeting in spring and the Revival Festival in autumn, both of which are race meetings

taking place on the super-fast circuit that ended Stirling Moss’s competitive career, developed as many motor racing circuits were out of the perimeter roads of old WW2 aerodromes. Their other major event is the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, which has developed into one of the biggest shindigs of the British summer season - a car culture bonanza that now hosts 120,000 spectators over three days and is based around Goodwood House itself, with a hill climb format that shoots the cars from the house at the bottom of the hill to the horse racing venue at the top. What I like about the Members Meeting on the circuit is that it’s manageable in terms of its more limited attendance – albeit with membership of the GRRC being only £43 a year for the right to buy tickets – and has angry noisy racing in priceless Ferraris, Jags, Cobras and Astons, to name just a few. It was particularly special to see Bruno Senna lapping the circuit in uncle Ayrton’s 1989 McLaren MP4/5, those iconic colours pushed along by the violent Honda V10 that spilt the ears - and just one of the many normally aspirated 3.5 litre V8s, 10s and 12s of the late 80s and early 90s that reminded

us what F1 cars should sound like. Not much quieter was Gordon Murray’s T50 Cosworth V12 supercar prototype that paced this particular parade, complete with his ‘fan car’ concept that sucks the car to the ground - tried and withdrawn (so as not to upset the sport..) as early as 1978 in his Brabham BT46 fan car that won its first and last race. He tells us that the T50 has everything right that his 1992 McLaren F1 road car had wrong - which was not much.. Yours with a cool starting price of three million dollars (and judging by the current value of the McLaren F1 road cars, worth every penny…). https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/ grrc-membership/

Cycling does its bit The 6Points Mallorca took place at the end of May - an annual 400km+ ride around the whole island over three days – and an initiative that has so far raised well over

€120,000 for local worthy charities since its inception 5 years ago. Through the course of the year, 6Points Challenges also organises monthly rides and due to the current awful conflict in Ukraine, the April edition of the monthly ride was held to raise money for those affected by Russia’s invasion, including many individuals and families who have been displaced to Mallorca. In cooperation with Yachting Gives Back and UR Mallorca - an important new local charity organisation offering vital and meaningful support to displaced Ukrainians - over €3200 was raised by around 30 cyclists on a 70km ride in stunning spring sunshine, starting and finishing at Santa Maria, summitting the Puig de Magdalena on the way. Cycling brings a great deal to our beautiful island each year, extending the tourist season each side of the summer. 6Points offers the chance to ride it in the best possible way. www.6PointsChallenges.com

Graham Hill Trophy start

CELEBRITYY CELEBRIT Property Market Update Santa Maria - 2.895m

The 2021 market report is finally out, and according to official figures supplied by the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), the transaction volume in the Balearics property market was around 6.6 billion euros, of which just over 5 billion was Mallorca based. In comparison to 2020 figures with the market valued at 3.6 billion (2.7 billion in Mallorca), this represents a mega 81% growth. Looking at the volume of home purchases by non-resident foreigners there were 4,692 operations in the Balearic Islands at the end of 2021, with its best figures in the fourth quarter --1,626 transactions. These figures represent an increase of 103.73 percent over the previous year. This of course is not surprising considering this was the start of the Pandemic devastation in Europe. However, compared to the last decade this is a new record figure, albeit the number of transactions still slightly lower than 2017 with the second highest transaction volume. A total of 40% of the transactions were foreign buyers. In 2021 the Balearic Islands were Spain’s most visited region with over 6.3 million international visitors. 50 | CELEBRITY

Evolution of Price of property in the Balearics

With a substantial rise in transactions there is bound to be a downside, for the buyer at least - according to a study undertaken by the Center for Real Estate Studies at the German Steinbeis Transfer Institute (commissioned on behalf of Porta Mallorquina Real Estate) shows that supply for luxury real estate in Mallorca has declined considerably. And with more demand and less supply that clearly effects prices, which have risen by up to 29% over the past year, which of course is quite concerning for buyer. Average prices in the luxury segment range from €3354 in the centre of the island to €6250 in the centre of Palma, to €7319 in the southwest, with Calvia the second most expensive municipality in Spain to buy a home. That said, due to the uncertainty in the markets, low interest rates and at the same time rising inflation, it is important for people to find more security for their money in longer-term investments. Real estate is naturally a more stable investment, and over the last few decades property in the Balearics have proven to be extremely stable having experienced significant appreciation over all. Couple this with the many benefits of

living in Mallorca and it’s not surprising that Mallorca is definitely one of the Hot Spots in Europe to buy at this time. Not only characterised by its stunning diverse landscapes, Mallorca has an outstanding infrastructure accessibility is second to none with Palma Airport being easily reached from almost all cities in Europe, and now even opening up to the USA with direct flights starting recently to New York. As well as the fabulous climate there are a wide array of recreation options, a diverse cultural offering, 17 international schools, and even more important in this day and age, a high level of safety. Investing in the Island’s offering is alsoimportant to the Government, with Mallorca pledging to become a role model for recycling and sustainable tourism, with a planned expenditure of 47.4 million euros, to include the eradication of single use plastic, reducing carbon emissions, as well as investment in the construction of a hydrogen plant in Lloseta, with a budget of 50 million euros, going by the name of “Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca”. Other investments include a tram connection between Palma and Palma de Mallorca Airport. All of these factors mean that the attention of international buyers has been increasingly drawn to Mallorca since the beginning of the pandemic and our island of Mallorca is most certainly becoming the Number One island destination for a second home in Europe. HOMES & PROPERTIES

Annhild - Interior Transformations & Flowers in Mallorca With so many beautiful properties on this island, there is a huge demand to make the interiors match the stunning views that surround them. Annhild Ellwanger is an interior designer and florist that works with high-end clients to turn their interior dreams into reality. By Ben Mulvey

Speaking with Annhild recently, she told me that since we last spoke she has been very busy with plenty of new and exciting projects. One of these projects is to design the interior of some rooms in a lavish €10 million villa in Costa de la Calma. In order to really get a feel for her projects, Annhild visits her clients in their homes and discusses every detail with them to establish what it is they would like the space to become. Colours, fabrics, lighting and surfaces are all talked about before Annhild takes this information and returns to her store in Son Bugadelles to start working on it. For this particular project, Annhild created a mock-up of each of the spaces that she was working on in her store so that she could visualise how it would look when transferred to the villa. She put together three bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a dining room and spent hours moving things around and trying out different design ideas. Once happy with the design, the client approved it and it was transferred to the property. Of course, one of Annhild’s designs would not be complete without the floral and plant arrangements that she has become so well known for on the island. For this house she decided on four bouquets, all made with artificial plants and displayed in large pots that are filled with stones. “It was a very big project for us to take on. By the time we had installed everything we had walked over 20km in one day - just inside the house!” Annhild says with a smile. Aside from her projects in villas around Mallorca, Annhild also works with flowers and makes incredible bouquets and arrangements for a variety of different spaces and events. Currently, she is working on table settings for a famous football team, ensuring that everything is perfect for their evening. It is also wedding season so Annhild and her team are busy putting together bouquets, flower arches and arrangements for brides and grooms around the island. Annhild’s beautiful concept store is located in the Son Bugadelles Estate in Calvia and showcases her talent for interior design. Her 52 | CELEBRITY

flower arrangements take centre stage and make the whole store feel like a magical oasis - a stark contrast to the busy industrial estate that surrounds it. Hundreds of products are on display including candles, teas, coffees and objet d’art that would complement any home. The showroom in Calle Colomer 7, Son Bugadelles is open from 11-4 from Monday to Friday and her new website will showcase all of her products online.

ART IS MADE TO BE SEEN Art and gastronomy in the Plaza of Algaida. A fruitful collaboration between businesses in the village square and local artist Sylvia Baker de Perkal. By Sylvia Baker de Perkal

Art is created to be seen, to be enjoyed. This being true, wall space becomes all the more necessary. And in an ideal world, one would hope for wall space in public places, where paintings can be displayed for viewing pleasure and, of course, for sale. I have been fortunate that three venues in the village square have offered to showcase a selection of my paintings. The first was Can Sant Café, a lovely restaurant on the corner of the plaza, which became my chosen place to host my first ever exhibition during the Nit del Art of Algaida- the village where I live in Mallorca- in September 2021. The artwork looked so good on their walls that they asked to keep it on permanent display, acting as a sort of impromptu gallery. The Italian trattoria Pepe Nero and the new Gianduia Gelateria and Creperie, also along the west side of the village square, soon followed suit, with selected works gracing the walls of both businesses. I am delighted to be able to display my work in what is turning out to be a win-win situation: they get décor and my art gets seen.

HEARTWORM Something new in the Balearic Islands! Heartworm (or Filariasis) is on the increase in the Balearic Islands. It has existed in Ibiza for many years but now it has started to spread quickly through Mallorca. But, what is filariasis or heartworm? It is a parasitic disease which is very prevalent in Spain and the Mediterranean region. It is spread by the bite of a mosquito (mainly the tiger mosquito, which has greatly increased in recent years), which injects microfilaria from an infected dog into a healthy dog. These go to the heart where they form adult heartworms. The adult worms release more microfilaria into the blood. Initially, there are no signs, and that is why early detection, with a blood test, is needed. Signs that may be seen are weight loss, lack of energy, a cough, and even accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. When the worms build up in the heart it can cause heart failure and death. For this reason, early detection and preventative measures are so important. In Clinica Veterinaria Bendinat we are running a campaign to find and prevent cases. Diagnosis involves a quick flow test (which we are all familiar with now!) Treatment, if positive, is very complicated and controlled. So the best way is prevention. Prevention involves the application of an injection that protects for a year, but before this, it is essential to do a SNAP test to make sure they are negative and do not have the disease. For dogs that show a negative test there are two types of treatment or prevention: 1. Oral tablets once per month 2. Annual injection

DARRYL LOPEZ:

Insurance Made Easier It’s that time of the month that I sit down with our resident insurance expert and friend, Darryl Lopez from AXA DYLSI Insurance Agency, to find out what new ways there are to protect ourselves and our belongings and all the ways that he can help to make insurance easier. By Ben Mulvey

WHY SHOULD YOU USE AN INSURANCE AGENT OR BROKER? When it comes to taking out an insurance policy, there are a number of factors that you should consider, not least of which is who you use and who you trust. Many of us in today’s age of convenience prefer to go online and find the cheapest deal available in the least amount of time. Online shopping has its time and place but when it comes to something as important as insurance, more time and a more handson approach are required. Would you Google your symptoms if you were ill and trust the website’s response over that of a doctor? Often people believe that price is a factor but using an insurance agent or broker is no more expensive than a policy that can be found online. PEACE OF MIND & SECURITY Insurance varies greatly from company to company in terms of cover, exclusions, insurance limits and what exactly you are covered for. Having your very own insurance agency allows you to make sure that you are covered for any eventuality and give you the peace of mind that the company will pay out should you have to make a claim. It is important to know that the agent is well versed with the claims process and that you have done your own due diligence on them before you work with them. An agent will also give a more personal touch to insurance and can answer any questions you may have about potential claims or using your various policies. I can personally vouch for Darryl and his team who have attended to my questions personally when I was at the hospital.

MAKE INSURANCE EASIER Making a claim is probably the hardest part of working with any insurance company as they often require lots of paperwork and proof that the claim is valid. Having an insurance agency means that they can do this all for you. They are on hand to raise the claim, chase the payment, handle any objections and argue on your behalf if required. An insurance agent will also keep up with any changes in your life or circumstances and offer advice. Perhaps you recently got married, had a child, or your business has grown? Tell your insurance agent and they can update your policies accordingly. KNOW YOUR RISKS Depending on what you do, where you live and your family set-up, everyone needs different types of insurance policies to cover their needs. If you have a business, you require more insurance coverage than perhaps a single person working in an office. An insurance agent will look at the

whole picture and ask you plenty of questions to find out what it is you need. They will then provide you with all the policies that you need to make sure you are fully protected. Often an insurance claim requires a professional to intervene for a second opinion or to justify a claim. An agent will handle this for you something that customer service on the end of a phone is unlikely to do when we deal directly with the insurer, for instance, or if we shop online. For all of your insurance needs, always use an agent or broker as there is no difference in price but such a difference in the level of service you will receive. Darryl and his team at AXA DYLSI Insurance Agency are experts in insurance for expats so get in touch with them for a tailored quote to make sure that you, your family, your business or your home is fully covered against any eventuality.
