SUZI QUATRO
STILL ROCK’N’ROLLING AFTER 58 YEARS! Fifty-eight years in show business, 55 million records sold, author of five successful books and at 71, Suzi Quatro is still rocking and writing as dynamically as ever. In fact, her undiminished enthusiasm saw her latest album “The Devil In Me” hailed as her best work.
Exclusive interview by Laura Stadler
Suzi the trailblazer. In the early 70s, breaking free from the stereo-type mini-skirted feminine vocalist, shocking all by bursting onto stage sporting a skin-tight leather catsuit with a teasing zip. Little wonder her autobiography and first book is titled “Unzipped”! “I was the first rock’n’roll chick lead singer and serious bass player, kicking ass with the guys in the band” the lady in leather reminisces. Success was hard won through sheer graft, focus and determination, plus overcoming the loneliness of a 21-year-old from Detroit uprooted to London without the comfort of her large, loving family. In 1973 the single “Can the Can” shot to number one, selling two and a half million copies worldwide, catapulting her into international stardom. The gigs and endless global tours have continued through nearly six decades - until Covid 19 pulled the rug from under her. “I think covid has changed everybody. My life was torn apart. My marriage exists on travel, which thank heavens we got through, and we’re happy. I’m a communicator. My job is people and travel, so everything I do was affected. I don’t want to complain because of so many who lost their livelihoods completely. It’s changed your perception. It’s made you re-prioritise every detail of your life. You have nowhere to hide, no distractions, no public mask to put on. You found yourself alone with ‘you’.” Yet, this feisty lady, whose mantra is “to turn negative into a positive creation”, certainly achieved that during lockdown. Finding
herself suddenly alone in England with all tours and around a hundred gigs cancelled. Her husband Rainer was stuck in Germany, but Suzi refused to allow herself to sink. Instead, she exploded into a powerhouse of creativity. Throwing herself into composing and recording new songs, writing poetry and gathering information for novels while keeping up with her daily social media blog. “I am a real poker player and will deal with the cards I’m dealt. With no other distractions, lockdown was the most creatively prolific of my life. After our collaboration on our album ‘No Control’ I knew Richard (her son from first husband Len Tuckey) and I make a brilliant team, so I said we should make the most of our time, write new material and be inspired by the things currently going on in the world. I poured all my feelings into it.” Hence the track, “Isolation blues”.
Pre-vaccination, Suzi caught Covid, languishing quietly home alone, keeping it secret from the press. “I’d released a new album that March and I didn’t want to look like I was riding out the sympathy ticket. But then I did a Radio 2 interview with Jeremy Vine, who felt it would help people if I mentioned it. So I did.” “Right now, I’m working on my next poetry book and novel. Everyone asked me to do a follow up to “The Hurricane” and this one is called “Great Undertakings”. It began 35 years ago when I started to collect what lots of famous people wanted on their tombstones. It morphed into a story and now it’s become a novel, the quotes to go at the back. I get a double tombstone because I’m Gemini and it’s my book” Suzi chuckles. “On one side it says: ‘Now I get it!’, the other, ‘Too many dreams and too little time!’ So that’s going to be my second novel and I’m over 30 poems into my second poetry book. I have a duet album coming out with another famous singer. But its top secret, and I can’t say her name yet. We’re also writing songs for other people and working on my next album.” An accomplished actress, noted for her roles in: “Happy Days”, “Absolutely Fabulous” and “Dempsey and Makepeace”, she has plans for a new movie and has signed to do a 6-8 episode TV series. Suzi considers Mallorca her haven “Our home in Mallorca is our neutral zone. Hamburg is my husband’s house; England is my house. Here nobody is in charge.” Surrounded by drink and heavy drugs, how

did she escape addiction? “I am not an addictive natured person. Did a little dope smoking, as was normal being a sixties teenager, but didn’t actually like the feeling. I never actually got really drunk until I met my first husband. I do like champagne and red wine, but luckily I get high on very little. Also, because I have been in this business since aged 14, my father’s words stuck with me. He was a semi-pro musician most of his life. I asked him why he didn’t drink and he said, ‘being a piano player in a bar, people are always buying you drinks. I used to have them lined up on top of the piano, I didn’t trust myself to ever start drinking them. So, I didn’t.’ I never ever drink when I work, against my religion. Basically, I prefer to be in charge of my faculties. “I’m an old soul, my instincts particularly good, and a very good people reader.” She is also true to her art. In her widely acclaimed warts-and-all documentary “Suzi Q” she insisted “my story be told including cringe moments; if it’s honest and it belongs. The uncomfortable moments are the best. You get the vulnerability, the pain, the struggle and then you get the success. I always see the vulnerable in me. But at the same time, I will survive. That’s how I read me. My husband calls me complicated.” Despite her success Suzi remains remarkably well-adjusted. “To survive you need to keep your feet on the ground. There’s room for your ego, that’s on the stage. But then you walk off the stage and keep your feet on the ground at all times. It doesn’t make you a special or better person just because you happen to be successful. That’s your job. This is what you have to remember. “People ask when I’m going to retire? I’ve spent 58 years learning my art, why would I give it up?” Suzi will be appearing April 20th at the Royal Albert Hall, London. 6 | CELEBRITY

SAKANA -
Authentic Japanese Cuisine in Palmanova When searching for an authentic Japanese dining experience, Mallorca may not be the first place that springs to mind. But step into Sakana restaurant in Palmanova and passion, authenticity and charm are present in every single dish. A long-standing favourite with the Celebrity team (it is a mere 25 paces from our office), Sakana is a Japanese restaurant with a soul. By Ben Mulvey
Owner, Olga, who is originally from Russia, told me during our conversation that it is quite strange to think that where she grew up is a mere one hour and fifty-minute flight from Japan, while the capital city of Moscow is over eight hours away - no wonder she ended up in Japan. Having spent many years soaking up the culture, the language and the vast and diverse cuisine of her surrogate home in Japan, Olga moved to Mallorca where she met her now late husband, Biso. Together they decided to open an affordable yet authentic Japanese restaurant that served traditional sushi that at the time was impossible to find elsewhere on the island. After finding the perfect premises next to the beach in Palmanova the next, and most important thing for Olga was finding a Japanese chef with the knowledge and experience to design a menu and cook the dishes she had enjoyed during her years in Japan. The head chef (who is rather shy in person but definitely not with his cooking) that they found has been with them from the very beginning. Ever since then, the 10 | CELEBRITY
head chef has personally trained every souschef and kitchen assistant and prides himself on the fact that all of them have come from esteemed sushi academies in Japan.
So, it was on a rainy afternoon in November that Matthew and I went to meet Olga’s fiance and the manager of Sakana, Sam, to experience the full dining experience at one of our favourite local establishments. Sam and Olga have been together, working hard to honour the true heart and soul of Olga and Biso´s original dream for the restaurant, while battling the recent restrictions, raising three young children, and growing their business. Sam’s extensive experience in management in London has certainly helped with the growth of the business and he invests a lot of time and money to make the business a success. Starting off with a crisp white wine, we chat to Sam who speaks about Olga, the kids and the restaurant with equal love and passion and begins to tell us about the past, present and future of the restaurant. And then the food arrives… To say that this is a colourful menu would be an understatement. Every dish is beautifully presented with the vibrant colours practically leaping from the plate, and all
of the dishes together create something resembling an artist’s palette with the fresh ingredients acting as the paints. First up we have a tuna tartare and another salmon tartare, both of which are surprisingly precise in their construction and complemented by the green layer of fresh avocado in the middle. Marinated in their own sauce, the flavours are delicate yet refined and allow the delightfully fresh fish itself to do the talking. Next up we are served a Midori sushi, salmon nigiri and Maguro, all unbelievably delicate in appearance but bursting with complex flavours that make you wonder how so much flavour can be packed into something so tightly packed. A personal highlight for me was next, the tobiko gunkan which is traditional sushi in the shape of a ship (gunkan) topped with flying fish roe (tobiko). Beautifully presented, the colour of this fish roe is like nothing I´ve seen before and the popping sensation when eaten was unexpected but surprisingly pleasant.
Once the cold dishes had been devoured it was time to tuck into the “meatier” dishes - Yaki Udon with beef which was fragrant, hearty and well seasoned and the prawn noodle soup with fresh Japanese vegetables. Both dishes added something different to the spread and can be made as vegetarian options (although Matthew and I are true carnivores at heart so if you are like us then beef is definitely the way forward!) Anyone dining at Sakana will undoubtedly feel the passion, the authenticity and the ambition to constantly evolve that the owners, the staff, and the chefs exude. But it is the exquisite food that is as authentic as one can find on the island that is the true reason to make sure that this restaurant is one that you visit once and return to often. A brand new Sakana restaurant is also opening up very soon with more space, new dishes, delicious wines and cocktails, and a new look and is only a skip and beat down the road...so watch this space! And if you can´t wait until then, scan the QR code in this review to check out the menu or place a
delivery order - you won’t be disappointed!
To find Sakana, when arriving in Palmanova, head towards the sea and you will see the restaurant located on the right-hand side. For reservations call 971 681 005 or visit www.sakanacalvia.com or, of course, scan the QR code.

After Hanna was advised to have an elective c-section when Max was born due to being eleven days overdue and 18 hours in labour, she will be opting to have another c-section in May with this child. “I’m going to have an elective c-section, because of the complications I had with Max,” she explained. Since Max was born, the couple has been spending as much time as they can with their little man and the joy he brings them can be seen in their faces when you talk to them. “He’s always laughing, smiling and generally a happy little guy”, Martin says proudly. Aside from their busy family life, Hanna and Martin are still keeping up with their exhaustive work schedules. Martin has been keeping up with all of his clients at Reenhance, both in the UK and Mallorca. “Now that travel is possible again I aim to be in Mallorca every eight weeks to see my patients”, he explains. 12 | CELEBRITY
Martin has also been on GBNews recently discussing hormones and other aspects of his businesses and professional expertise. He has also been posting a series of videos on his social media pages about a range of different topics from the perspective of a cosmetic and anti-ageing doctor. Hanna meanwhile has been filming the latest series of Real Housewives of Cheshire which is currently airing on ITV every Monday at 9 pm. This series features the launch of Hanna’s much-anticipated book, brilliantly named “Brains Are The New Tits”. This inspirational and motivational book shares Hanna’s top ten rules to success and includes interviews with female entrepreneurs that have all been successful, regardless of their backgrounds. The name of the book is in reference to the fact that none of the women that Hanna interviews have made their looks a priority; instead they used their brains. The book has been well-received by like-minded
women who share Hanna’s outlook on life and is available to buy on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle format. Hanna’s very own dental product range, Icy Bear Dental, is also going from strength to strength and new products are in development to cover all aspects of dental and oral hygiene. There are also some exciting new Christmas bundles available that make perfect gifts for everyone. Hanna and Martin seem to be constantly on the go and I tell them every time I speak to them that I don’t know how they keep up with everything. Raising a baby, filming a successful TV show, running their businesses and having a personal and social life is no easy task but this couple take everything in their stride and their exciting news of baby number two will only spur them to work harder between now and May to enjoy their time with their growing family. BOOK LAUNCH TO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS EMPIRE Interview with international best selling author and artist Roberto Sendoya Escobar (Phillip Witcomb) By Laura Stadler
It all started with a few scribbled notes. These turned into a book, which immediately became an international best seller. The demand so great that day two the Amazon computer system couldn’t cope with demand. The book Son of Escobar: First Born is now translated into five languages (with more in negotiation) and has catapulted Roberto Sendoya Escobar, (Phillip Witcomb) into the fast lane. “I prefer Roberto as it’s the birth name my mother gave me”. The simple life of the acclaimed artist transformed into a daily juggle of meetings and business decisions. A big budget film deal on the table, while he now runs his own international business empire. “I never intended to write a best seller. I was suffering severe mental health issues following the terrible year of 1993, in which my beloved wife and adoptive father died, plus my biological father Pablo Escobar was assassinated. In those dark days, I found I could break through the smoke cloud of depression by jotting down my memories. Writing my story was therapeutic. Yet now
I find myself struggling to retain my old life of an artist as demand for my art has soared faster than I can paint. “My decision to register my trademark and form a limited company has taken off big time. Six months down the road, I now have an international brand. If you go online, you will see my autograph on a vast variety of products, including playing cards, trainers, T shirts and bottle tops openers. I even have jigsaw puzzles, cushions and jewellery boxes of my paintings. On average, it is growing at a rate of one new product a day. “Although I sign each product off, my daughter Anna who heads up the company in London as CEO, does all the work sourcing the manufacturers and ensuring safe delivery of each product to our world wide customer base.” “The movie deal is far lengthier and complex. I am legally bound to be cautious at this stage of the process. What I can say is that it will be a multimillion dollar budget production with a mega major Hollywood studio. I am the sole owner of the intellectual
property and copyrights to my book and my life story, which means they first need to purchase that from me, so as you can imagine, these negotiations are extremely sensitive and time consuming. Most of the film will be made between Mallorca and the Canary islands. We already have a famous top director very interested and actors, really big names, who have agreed in principle through their agents to be in the movie. “Although I have always been an artist, since the publication of my book my life has changed. I am now recognised. I don’t mind that, but I have less time to paint being so busy with meetings. I am now faced with a hell of a lot of decision making. It’s my brand and I am very particular about the image. If I am endorsing a product it has to be right.” “We now have a rum that is Pure Escobar Gold Rum with vanilla spices from Colombia. I told the distiller that I wanted it to pack a punch, and it certainly does. Everything requires my input and my artistic eye to ensure perfection. Amongst our signature rum collection we are producing gift sets with crystal tumblers and Escobar gold ice cube ingots’ .” Perfect and unique Christmas and Valentine’s Day presents.” “Also, we are sampling pure Escobar Colombian Gin which should be out before Christmas, together with a cognac that we are bringing out early next year.” “Yet all the limelight is not my thing. My ideal day would be to be woken up by my wife with a cup of English Yorkshire tea. Then after breakfast go straight into my studio to spend the entire day painting, only stopping for a quick sandwich and a chat to my daughter who runs my company.” “I am happiest when I am painting quietly in my studio in the heart of rural Mallorca, among the trees, with only the company of my wife and the dogs. Despite the recent upturn of events, I am an artist at heart.” www.robertosendoyaescobar.com Roberto Sendoya Escobar (Phillip Witcomb)

WINTER COATS 2021 A great coat is an essential purchase for the forthcoming seasons and one that deserves a great deal of thought as you may well be wearing it every day. Luckily this year we are absolutely spoilt for choice, with both high-end and highstreet outlets offering a plethora of options and styles, whatever your budget. To simplify matters here are some of the main trends to pay heed to, Faux Fur, Classic, Padded and Cocoon, so take your pick and choose wisely. Faux Fur A leopard print faux fur is my absolute favourite piece to finish a look. These jackets are worn by most fashionistas once the temperatures start to drop, including our beloved Kate Moss. Yes, they are an absolute statement item, so keep the rest of it simple. Style with faux leather Freddy jeans www.facebook. com/Left-Bank-Six and a black cashmere polo neck or a classic white button-down and blue denim. Saying that, sometimes it can be thrown over a boho dress for a striking contrast print effect. Vanessa (www.facebook. com/vanessalondonshoes), as many of you will be familiar with from her fabulous footwear collections, has launched into outerwear and her faux furs are amongst the best I have seen available. The price point is great for

the quality and style and they are not mass produced so snap one up whilst you can. They are also all over the highstreet in every shade imaginable. Classic The brand for the ultimate classic wrap coat is Maxmara a là Megan Markle but it doesn’t come cheap. I saved for a while for mine but it is absolutely timeless and effortlessly chic. With a classic coat, whether it be a wrap style or a single-breasted stick with a neutral palette, camel, grey and black work perfectly. & Other Stories have an extensive range including a couple of Maxmara dupes, not to forget the fabulous and inexpensive M&S repertoire. This is where to invest though as it will never date. £1,800 Maxmara Icon double-breasted Wool & Cashmere blend coat.
ellas nuestra querida Kate Moss.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas… It’s that magical time of the year again when our beautiful city of Palma turns into a spectacular winter wonderland. The Passeig del Born is adorned with stunning, twinkling lights and snowy orbs, stars hang over the fountain, fairy lights are draped as far as the eye can see and a huge Christmas tree towers over Parc del Mar. It must be Christmas! By Ben Mulvey
After last years’ controversial effort during the height of the third wave of the Covid pandemic, this year it was wonderful to see people out on the streets enjoying this annual spectacle together. Kids’ eyes were bright and full of festive joy as the twinkling balloons created a sea of lights in Plaza Cort and all along the Born (not that these balloons are only for the kids, right?)

This year, a moving circuit was created to avoid huge crowds congregating and was a huge success. Gone are the days of jostling for space and freezing your proverbials off....everything was seamlessly organised between 6-9 pm and we even got a table to watch the switching on with a glass of wine in hand. In true Mallorca fashion, the lights were suddenly turned on, five minutes late
and without any fanfare but it wouldn’t be the same if it ran like clockwork - it’s part of the fun, guessing when it might happen! Make sure that you take the time to head into Palma and have a wander around the various lights and attractions, safely of course, and get into the Christmas spirit!
SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PACKAGES ARE AVAIL ABLE FOR GROUPS. PLEASE SEE OUR WEBPAGE FOR DETAILS.

MENORCA MOMENTS in assosiation with
Life is better in Menorca As I wake up to the joyful dawn chorus from the hundreds of starlings nesting in the fig trees, it takes moment to remember exactly where I am. Having lived for over 40 years in Mallorca, 27 of those in Portals Nous, we moved to the centre of Mahón just over a month ago. Why Menorca you may ask? The idea formed when my husband retired two years ago. We were finding our beautiful island of Mallorca too busy with overcrowded beaches and roads so we rarely ventured anywhere over the summer. We also needed a new focus in this phase of our lives. I’ve always loved visiting the smaller Balearic island and with a choice of quick, cheap flights (resident discounts available) it seemed a great option. We put our home and my little business up for sale and waited to see what would happen. Yes, you guessed it, COVID happened! The devastation caused to people’s lives, freedom and the economy can never be underestimated but there has
28 | CELEBRITY
also been a change as to how we choose to live. As a result, the privilege of living on an island with sunshine, sea and outdoor living was in demand so my little shop found a new owner and our home was sold. ‘Hasta la vista’ Mallorca (population 900,000+) and ‘Hola’ Menorca (population 93,397. It still feels ‘holiday-like’ with tourists milling around in the sunshine but I know this will change as winter approaches and the famous Migjorn (south) and Tramuntana (north) winds start to blow! Out of season is always an excellent time to explore. We will walk stretches of the 186km Cami de Cavalls, a well-signed, tried and tested coastal path circumventing the entire island. There are 75 official beaches to discover and find our favourites. The boutique hotels stay open offering a calm oasis for a trip away. The gastronomic delights of Menorca can be sampled in superb restaurants. The Mercat des Peix for tapas is a must along with a visit to one of the renowned cake shops - spot the queues
forming outside! A myriad of independently run chic shops offers original purchases (an ideal Christmas shopping trip). A headline in The Times recently read ‘Menorca: The Balearic Island is beginning to rival Ibiza for Glitz’ highlighting the high-end investment taking place. The most recent being the stylish Hauser and Wirth Gallery on the Illa del Rei which opened in July. Free entrance and a 6€ return boat trip takes you there or you can moor up privately. It offers interesting exhibitions and activities throughout the summer months. I am sure Series 3 of the reality TV show ‘Below Deck: Sailing Yacht’ filmed on board Parsifal III will be entertaining viewing plus an opportunity to see our stunning coastline. This is just a taster of what Menorca has to offer, I hope you will join me on my journey of discovery and keep an eye out for my new business, Estudio 3 de Maó which is launching very soon.

IBIZA - WAIT...WHAT?! with Mikey Slade
Halloween doesn’t get much better than this folks! What a rollercoaster of a weekend and week I’ve just had in Ibiza! Like with all good rollercoaster Disco & House Music rides, just go with the flow and ride those highs and lows just make sure you take an umbrella because we all know what a Balearic downpour can be like! The weekend started with my Wait…What? Ibiza party throwing a “Pink Queen Night” at Sunrise Bar in Ibiza Old Town, everyone was resplendent in bright neon pink, our Drag Queen House Mother “La Petite” leading the way with DJ Bekka Rawkins & myself going b2b with twosies & threesies, all of which was filmed for a future project with Music Box Radio Station, London. The party was a celebration of Lyndell Mansfield’s life who was featured on a beautiful poster designed by Graphic Art Rat our Wait…What? Ibiza resident graphic artist. Lyndell was a beautiful lady and personal friend to the WWI family who sadly left us to join the great big disco party in the sky. God rest your soul Lyndell, I hope we did you proud, you will be greatly missed but forevermore in our hearts. The next night at Sunrise Bar, our loyal Wait Watchers, myself DJing, “La Petite” holding court, plus the gorgeous bar staff pulled out all the spooky stops for a bonkers Halloween party, Wait…What? Ibiza style. My final gig later in the week was an impromptu DJ set at St Eulalia’s newest and funkiest restaurant, Word Of Mouth Radio Cafe (amazing food) where DJ Bekka Rawkins and I had our set filmed once again for our new project with Music Box Radio, more of that in the Spring Edition of Celebrity Magazine. Hopefully, we will be back at WOM & Sunrise Bar very soon plus Bona Vada Bingo, our sister party, is moving to Ibiza so keep checking our WWI socials! Then I experienced the game-changer! In the world of clubland, a game-changer is when you experience a night like no other 32 | CELEBRITY
and have been lucky enough to have been part of that unique and important night that will go on to affect the landscape & future of clubbing in some shape or form because that particular party just majorly upped the ante. The guilty “Party” (sorry I couldn’t resist) is Melon Bomb which was formed 6 years ago by Scott Gray, Paul
Reynolds, Ben Santiago and Corbi. Melon Bomb has captured the hearts, minds and feet of Ibiza’s clubbers with their explosive mix of house and disco. I rocked up to catch up with my best Judy and Gal Pal Mandy Gray but it soon became apparent that something incredible was going down at my favourite Ibiza cabaret venue “Lio” where the Pacha Group were having their annual Halloween party with Melon Bomb back again to provide the DJ Set. The atmosphere was charged to the max, the crowd were lapping it up and I arrived just in time to take in DJ Scott Gray’s fabulous set. He was pumping out killer top tunes like Flylife Xtra by Basement Jaxx, Before by Simon Hinter, You Better
by Mount Rushmore (Es Cavalett Mix) and Mood Vision by Harry Romero. The bar kept getting raised higher and higher and at one point I filmed what was happening to capture all on my iPhone from inside the DJ booth (check @waitwhatibiza on Instagram) I turned to Mandy and said “this is going down for real” and we both nodded with big vampire grins. Being a vociferous party boy for the past 37 years and a DJ/Club Promoter for 25 years, I’ve experienced a fair few game-changers with Trade at Turnmills in the 90’s being the top one but I’ve also been at the birth of The Wag Club, Kinky Gerlinky, Pushka, Manumission, Pirata, DC10 and Matinee, to name but a few, but the Melon Bomb family pulled it out of the bag leaving myself and I’m sure many more clubbers hungry for more and I for one can’t wait….As for the lows, well I did get my headphones, passport & RayBans stolen so I had to apply for an emergency passport which took two days but that just meant I had two extra days on the rollercoaster and bagged an extra gig! Wait…What? Ibiza will be back very soon plus Bona Vada Bingo, our UK sister party is moving to Ibiza so keep checking our WWI socials for more mischief, fun and house music! What?
Wait…What? SOLLER VALLEY STORIES
by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts
Photos by Gary Lloyd-Rees
ALL CHANGE IN OUR WORLD The world has changed in the Soller Valley and a ‘new normal’ is coming into play. For 27 years the Soller Valley was accessible only by a torturous mountain route or by the famous Soller road tunnel. Hacked out of the mountain, the tunnel provided the access to make the ‘Hidden Valley’ thrive. Everyone had to pay the toll which paid for all the work in creating this access. Controversy, negotiation, and finally the toll was no more. The tunnel was opened to all and thus it has been for the past three years. What is different today is that all the work has now been completed to eliminate the toll booths and the infrastructure. All you see today is a road leading to a tunnel. All those years of slowing down to pay the money, plus all the politics all gone, as if it was never even there. Meanwhile the centre of Soller is undergoing a revamp in the next three months. The Gran Via, one of the traditional iconic street

of Soller, is becoming a boulevard. This has been talked of for years and is, at last, becoming a reality. When finished the area will spread out onto the streets with cafes and bars and extend the central life of the town. Access to the car park and buses is built in to this plan and will make the visit so much easier for those who arrive in this way. If that wasn’t enough, the area around the traditional market square of Soller is also heading for a makeover. The boulevard will be coming its way too and by next summer the town centre will be a very smart, new experience. The building work of the winter months includes the completion of at least three new boutique hotels and one very high end addition. The Gran Via will become home to a fine new hotel set in its own grounds in the heart of town. Soller is preparing for its future which has been thought about and planned for so long. The interest in the area is now off the scale
as so much filming has put us on the map worldwide. The Crown is the most recent production to have enjoyed our world and this continues all winter with other Netflix productions. The USA is well represented in the Soller Valley from historical links with the Military and Navy presence here in years gone by. Many come back here to live in retirement, having met their partners in the Soller Valley in those days. The direct flights, just announced from Mallorca to the USA next year is a game-changer. We anticipate the future with much excitement and know that another generation is going to enjoy our world. A winter of hard work will bring great rewards and great pleasure to so many. The Soller Valley looks forward to all who come our way. Come for a day, a holiday, a lifetime – you are so very welcome.
The Crown es
CELEBRITY | 37
FINDING FAIRWAYS Mallorca Golf Course Reviews with Matthew Cull
Welcome back to Finding Fairways This winter edition of Celebrity Magazine takes us to Golf Son Gual, located on the Palma to Manacor road, just a tenminute drive from Palma. This is the golf course you can see out of the left-hand side of your plane if approaching Palma Airport from the north, about two minutes before touchdown. The distinctive water fountain in the middle of the lake is clearly visible as a landmark along with some of the huge greens and bunkers. I arrived at the course with my playing partner for the day, my neighbour and friend, Steve, who runs the successful merchandising business, www.redhotbranding.co.uk. We were greeted warmly by the lady on reception and checked in for our 10:12 tee-off time. By the time we had turned around and taken the few steps to the front of the clubhouse, the caddy master had our buggy waiting for us. We attached our golf bags, popped a couple of bottles of water into the holders and headed off to the driving range. Both of us, it turned out, were a little bit rusty but the time spent warming up on the spacious range certainly helped. We then headed off to the first tee… We played on a quiet Wednesday in early October which meant that we didn’t have any players immediately in front of behind and therefore no audience for our tee shots off the first tee. After a quick discussion about whether to play off the yellow tees of the whites, we took the ‘go hard or go home’ philosophy and decided on the latter, meaning we had total course yardage of just over 7200. The tee box has an enviable, elevated position affording a great panoramic overview of the hole. Two fairly straight drives, albeit not that long, got us underway. We jumped in the buggy and headed off down the hill towards the fairway. The course has tarmac buggy paths but you can drive them onto the fairways, just not too near the greens. There are signs to warn of prohibited areas. When we pulled up alongside our balls on the fairway, the iPad-sized screen in the golf buggy told us the yardage to the centre of the green and also mentions other notable yardages to 38 | CELEBRITY
bunkers and water hazards. It’s worth noting that most European courses measure hole and course distances in metres. I’ve been playing golf since I was about fourteen, mainly in the U.K where we measured in yards. I don’t think I will convert to metres now! The screen in the buggy lets you choose either yards or metres and also offers a preview of each hole by means of a video flyover. A great gadget, and extremely useful. We completed the whole in five shots each and moved on. Some consistent golf over the next couple of hours brought us to the ninth hole, a challenging par-3 that brings you back to the clubhouse, which was great because by this time we were both very hungry! We parked the buggy and found a seat on the terrace overlooking the 18th green. We enjoyed a couple of cañas and some lunch.
The food, drinks, and service were excellent. The back nine seemed more challenging than the front nine, and the scorecard reflected that. The final hole is a memorable par-5 with plenty of water to navigate and is a fitting end to a great 18 holes of golf around the undulating terrain, and with some of the largest bunkers and greens that I’ve ever played. The selection of par-3’s at Son Gual was certainly a highlight for me. Son Gual has been compared to Augusta National by former Masters’ champion Ian Woosnam, and deservedly so. It’s a fantastic course with a convenient location to boot. It should be a ‘must visit’ for any residents or visitors to the island. For tee bookings and more information, please visit www.son-gual.com. Bienvenido

CARS, BOATS AND BIKES by Hamish Goddard
The fires are lit, the clocks have gone back… And as we move into the winter season, I must confess that I love this time of the year in Mallorca. As anyone who lives here will know, the summers here are crammed with friends visiting from overseas – at home, we call it being ‘on charter’, with all the fun but also the demands that come with it; sheets, towels, shopping, barbecue. Repeat… I have to say that I would never swap it, being an almost perfect annual cycle, but as winter draws in, the Mallorca dynamic changes; the rains arrive in September, usually with lightning flashes to thunderous applause, the house empties and we pick up with those of whom we may have seen little since springtime. It’s also a great time of year to get out properly on some of the winter toys - cycling as an example being more enjoyable in spring and autumn than in the heat of the summer and this year, thank goodness, the cycling
46 | CELEBRITY
season is fully subscribed once again. 6Points Challenges Due to the uncertainty of travel that remained in May, the 6Points Cycling Challenges swapped their two annual events around so that the main Mallorca instalment, which attracts many overseas visitors, was held in October and the more local event that alternates annually between Menorca and Ibiza took place in spring. So it was that on a drenching Friday morning at the beginning of October, the 50 or so riders departed from Port Adriano to ride 400+ kilometres around the island over three days. This event really has become quite special for those that have taken part in it - allowing as it does, a chance to circumnavigate the entire island - including all of its quite spectacular
cul-de-sac extremities reachable by bicycle; north (Cap Formentor), east (Capdepera), south (Ses Salines) west (Sant Elm), highest (Puig Major) and lowest (anywhere by the sea..!) - in a tough but wonderfully inclusive way, at exceptional value for money. With rider groups of different fitness abilities, fantastic hospitality and superb organisation throughout, all the logistics are expertly managed and all any participant needs to do is ride and enjoy it in excellent company. www.6Pointschallenges.com The 6Points Challenges initiative was created only a few years ago by the supremely energetic and delightful Bryan Visser, and this year passed the €100,000 mark that it has raised for local charities - primarily Asdica, a local charity supporting children and adults in Mallorca with learning difficulties, with
further support this year going to Yachting Gives Back, a charity initiative created by the similarly energetic and delightful Nick Entwisle, who has cajoled many within the superyacht industry on the island into providing generously for those in need, of which there remain depressingly many. Both these fine gentlemen - who may have thought they had long since retired - bring exceptional energy and enthusiasm into enhancing the lives of others less fortunate. I take a bow. Es Grau Coffee Break Being a bit ‘weak at the knees’, having taken part in too many triathlons with my asymmetric legs in earlier years, I wasn’t able to ride the 6Points this year but finally got out on the bike for the second instalment of my employer, e3 Systems’ yacht-industry-based cycling challenges - also in aid of Yachting Gives Back. This was a more modest but
tough 40km ride from Puerto Andratx to the spectacularly located Es Grau cafe on the Ma-10 mountainous coast road towards Estellencs. We’ve raised over €5000 so far through our two relatively small events - a superb contribution from captains, crews, engineers and agents at the end of their own exhausting summers. 550 Challenge Mallorca Vying for space on our world-class network of spectacular roads was a new instalment to the international rallying season - the 550 Challenge Mallorca. Organised by Toni Descallar, founder of the famous Rally Clasico that takes place each year in March, this event was hosted by Port Adriano always so supportive of new initiatives - and included no less than 18 closed-road special stages spread across the island, totalling 550km. The event is open to three categories of
eligible cars: Competition (modern and classic), Regularity (modern, classic and electric) and a Show Car Class (standard road-legal cars). I’ve taken part in a number of the Rally Clasico events in Mallorca over the years and there are few things more enjoyable than driving these fantastic routes in suitable weaponry on closed roads - so if you have something vaguely exciting with which to take part, this is a fantastic and superb value addition to Mallorca’s annual rally calendar: www.550challengemallorca.com / www. rallyislamallorca.com Santa says that as I write, there are 51 sleeps until Christmas – and my finger is on the mute button in preparation for the aural assault of Mariah Carey… Happy Christmas everyone and see you in 2022!

TAKE FLIGHT WITH BALEARIC HELICOPTERS Jonny Greenall, owner of Balearic Helicopters has been flying in Mallorca for over 22 years with over 7000 flying hours under his belt and recently told me all about his passion for flying and everything that Balearic Helicopters offers to aspiring pilots. By Ben Mulvey
Many of us dream of taking to the skies over our beautiful island to see it from a different perspective and it is this dream that led Jonny to set up Balearic Helicopters. Starting off in the Air Cadets in Chipmunks and Vigilant Gliders, he then learnt to fly the Robinson R22 & R44 before obtaining his Commercial Helicopter Licence and Instructor Rating. Jonny is also a designated CAA Radiotelephony Examiner and a fully qualified EASA Flight Examiner and in 2015 became a Superyacht Helideck Instructor. Balearic Helicopters offer various sightseeing tours over the island, predominantly in the summer months when the weather is better, and have a range of tours for guests to experience Mallorca from the sky. Although there are still tours on offer during the winter months, this time of year is when Jonny focuses more on the training aspect of the business and teaches
people to fly. Not necessarily the cheapest of pastimes, obtaining a helicopter license is an achievable dream for many on the island and one that Jonny can help with thanks to his extensive knowledge and experience. As an Authorised EASA Examiner, he can help future pilots to take initial Skills Tests and Proficiency Checks for any CAA or EASA licence holder and Type Rating Examiners for commercial Proficiency Checks. During the winter months, there are a huge amount of superyachts in Mallorca that are here for refit and repair or just to spend their yard period on the island until the Mediterranean season starts again. This means that there is plenty of time for the crew to learn about helicopter safety on superyachts (a surprising number of boats have helipads on board!) As a Superyacht Helideck Instructor, Jonny travels the world training superyacht crew the Helicopter
Landing Officer and HeliDeck Assistant Course which involves teaching people how to land a helicopter on the back of a superyacht safely. Whether you are looking to fulfil a lifelong dream and learn to fly or just wish to see our beautiful island from the air, Balearic Helicopters are a one-stop-shop for everything chopper-related. Or, if you are looking for a unique and special gift for someone this Christmas, why not buy them a gift voucher for a helicopter flying experience? Balearic Helicopters are located at Aerodromo de Son Bonet. For more information, visit www.balearichelicopters.com or contact Jonny by calling +34 971 794 132

The Fastest Growing Premium Boat Club In Mallorca Boating should be easy, fun and full of joy! Agapi Boat Club changes everything for those who used to see boating as something too demanding or expensive. A boat club membership is simply the natural choice for modern boaters.
Our members focus on the fun – “leave the hassle to us”, says Stefan and Henrietta Roslund, the Swedish couple managing Agapi Boat Club Mallorca. They are convinced that the business model of sharing economy is the future way of boating. We have been running the club for five years and last year, even during a difficult pandemic, has been our best one. Due to the pandemic, people could not travel and stayed at home here in Mallorca and wanted to go out on the water and explore. But to own a boat here is very expensive therefore the club alternative is a great way of getting access to boat life in a very easy way. Agapi Boat Club have thirteen boats in Port Calanova with a range of boats from 6 to 13 metres. This means that our members can choose the boat type that suits
52 | CELEBRITY
them best. The premium boat brands that we work with are Agapi, Saxdor and De Antonio Yachts and for next season we will add some other exciting brands. Our success this year has been demonstrated by investing in bigger, more exclusive boats. Our strategy for next year is to expand even more next year by adding more of our biggest boats, the De Antonio Yachts D42, into the fleet. Agapi Boat Club offers its members unlimited boating days and they take pride in giving members the opportunity to jump on board all year round. “We all have different priorities, but we want our members to have the same access to boating that they would have if they owned a boat themselves – the flexibility to hit the water any time, any day”, says Stefan.
For us, a boating membership has two benefits. Firstly, it gives the members total control of their boating costs - none of the surprises that owners face with service costs, repairs, insurance, depreciation, and more. And secondly, they get continuity - the guarantee of hassle-free boating for as long as they like. Members simply sign up for a membership and, if they don’t cancel, the renewal is as seamless as any other of the other subscriptions in day-to-day life. Agapi Boat Club is located in Port Calanova,Puerto Pollensa and Menorca. The plan is to open at least one more harbour on Mallorca next year and to expand the boat club to Ibiza. “Exciting times”, Stefan says with a big smile! www.agapiboatclub.com
CELEBRITYY CELEBRIT Property Market Update Santa Maria - 2.895m
Although the start of the year was sluggish due to continued pandemic restrictions, once relaxed a record number of foreign buyers were snapping up luxury homes in Mallorca this year, with many buyers from Germany, followed by the British quite surprisingly considering the new Brexit restrictions. This was followed by the French, the Dutch, Swedes, Swiss and Austrians according to dates from one of the larger estate agents on the island Engel & Volkers. Contrary to some expectations property prices have increased by an average 10% compared with last year. Real estate transactions in the Balearics Islands during the first half of this year amounted to 390 million euros, in comparison to 190 million in the first six months of 2019 and 212 million euros in the first half of 2020. The areas of most interest were Son Vida, Palma Old Town, Port Andratx, the Southwest coastal areas within Calvia, as well as the more protected areas in the Serra de Tramuntana. But the central countryside villages were showing much more interest compared to previous years. Historically investment in property in Mallorca have proven to be solid 54 | CELEBRITY
investments, weathering the storms of many an economic crash far better than many regions around the world. Interestingly this has been emphasised once again with this most recent challenge the world has been facing. Set apart from the mainland, Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands have proven to be quite protected from the continued spread of this pandemic. The sheer distance between the shore of the mainland separated by the Mediterranean Sea has afforded the Island’s population with a natural barrier of protection, and together with the swift lockdown implementation of the Government, provided a safety net for her residents, with very few mortality rates by comparison to many regions around the world. Although restrictions were initially very severe, most owners of properties felt more protected and much safer than their friends and families in their own home countries. The pandemic has without a doubt changed everyone’s lives, with an interestingly positive impact in encouraging a major shift towards remote working and emphasising the importance of family values and quality of life. Mallorca has proven once again to
be a popular location, for many obvious reasons. There is however no doubt that the World has a long way to go to overcome the current crisis, and we yet have seen the only the tip of the iceberg of the financial impact on the global economy. Interestingly it has been reported that there has been an upsurge of property investments by numerous financial institutions and investment funds this year, clearly wishing to provide more security for their investor’s money in bricks and mortar in a more stable and secure environment. Some of the other reasons for this surge in sales are unquestionably the fact that this beautiful Mediterranean island offers so much more than anyone who has never can imagine. Whatever your interest or passion there is something for everyone – an adventure playground for all ages, from golf and sailing to horse riding and climbing, as well as arts, dance, entertainment, gastronomy, and wellness – Mallorca can compete well with many an international hub. Mallorca’s easy accessibility has long established the island as a top destination for international travellers. With more instability and uncertainty ahead, one thing is for sure, Mallorca real estate values will always increase over time. So, if you are thinking of investing, how much more persuading do you need? From luxury modern holiday homes to cosy rustic fincas there is a property and location to suit every taste and lifestyle criteria. HOMES & PROPERTIES
Amada J Butler – An Holistic Approach to property. DARRYL LOPEZ:
MAKING INSURANCE EASIER In light of the recent bad weather and extreme conditions we have experienced over the past few weeks in Mallorca, our insurance expert, Darryl Lopez from DYLSI AXA AGENCY explains some key things we need to know about Home Insurance. By Ben Mulvey
Home insurance covers losses or damages to the building and the contents of the home. These policies cover different sorts of damages such as theft, power surge, atmospheric phenomena, water or fire damage as well as private third-party liability, among others. In Spain, all properties with a mortgage must be insured at least against fire but they do not have to be insured through the bank as part of the mortgage, the client can choose the insurer that they prefer to use. A common misconception is that home insurance is only needed when you own a house but it is very important for people renting properties to take out a policy as they need to have third-party liability insurance in the event that something happens to the surrounding properties or even damages to their own property so they aren’t liable to the landlord. It is also wise to have contents insurance in the event of damage or burglary of the tenant’s belongings. In Spain, acts of god are rarely covered in insurance policies, that’s why both owners and renters should have a policy in place to ensure that the Spanish insurance consortium payout in the event of a natural disaster (an example of this is the recent volcanic eruptions on the island of La Palma). Darryl’s Top Home Insurance Tips 1. Never undervalue the contents of your property. Be sure to accurately value everything to ensure that the payout is of the amount needed to replace or repair the contents. 2. List special items. Make sure to ask the insurer if they require photos of special items
such as jewellery, collections or art as otherwise they could not be covered as normal contents. 3. Insure your second home. If you have a second home on the island, make sure to check if there’s a clause for a non-occupancy period. AXA has no non-occupancy period with their policies meaning that the property is always protected. 4. Renters need home insurance. If you are renting a property, it should be insured to protect the contents and the tenant’s thirdparty liability against the owner and other neighbours. 5. Always check the ‘small print’. Be sure to carefully read all home insurance quotes to make sure that things like power surges are included and that there is no indemnity period or limits. Ask your advisor to clarify the levels of cover and limitations. 6. Be careful with low cost policies. Make sure that your insurance will pay out the price to replace the damaged items as new and that age
and depreciation of the items will not be taken into account. If we insure our cars, our health and our travel, it only makes sense to insure our homes as we spend more of our time there than anywhere else and have all of our belongings under that one roof. Anyone can take out home insurance and Darryl and his expert team can advise you on the best policy to suit your needs as well as provide you with assistance in the event of a claim to make insurance easier.

The “Dark Side” of Mallorca!
Mallorca is a paradise for pet lovers and their furry friends. But there are a few diseases that make life difficult for our animals: processionary caterpillars in spring, Leishmania all summer and now a new enemy is emerging from the shadows…heartworm. This is a parasitic worm (up to one foot long- ugh!) that lives in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of dogs and cats. Dogs are the main hosts and cats are “accidentally” infected, but they too can get very ill and eventually die, just like dogs. It is a big problem in many parts of the world and, until recently, it was not a problem here in Mallorca, but since the tiger mosquito has taken over, the disease is spreading rapidly. (Curiously, it has been a big problem in Ibiza for many years). The mosquito plays an important role, acting as an “intermediate host”; a mosquito bites an infected dog and sucks up some baby parasites. These develop into “infective” babies (larvae) in the mosquito which, a few weeks later, bites another dog or cat, “injecting” them with these new larvae. These then migrate in the blood to the heart and lungs where they grow over the next months into adult worms. Here they breed and produce more babies! What signs do dogs and cats show? In dogs, they can have a persistent cough and less energy but later they can have sudden death or gradual heart failure. In cats, it can be very subtle as they don´t tend to develop adult worms, just immature ones, but they can still cause illness such as a cough, weight loss, occasional vomiting or even sudden death. Early detection and prevention are important because treatment is expensive and dangerous although tests are available to detect positive cases. Preventative treatments can be monthly tablets and spot-ons and a new injection that lasts a year for dogs. This summer, in Clinica Veterinaria Bendinat we did a mailing, testing and preventative medicine, including injections for many of our clients.
