To our loyal readers, I would like to thank you all for supporting CELEBRITY Magazine, because without you, this very special edition would not be possible.

I’m immensely proud to present to you our Celebrity Magazine: Luxury Edition.

Having lived in Mallorca for more than 23 years I have seen many changes, especially in the real estate sector, and as the owner of Calvia Properties and portalreu.com, real estate is a true passion of mine. Branching out into the unknown territory of the publishing world was scary but thankfully has been so rewarding.

Although Mallorca has always been seen as an island of wealth and class, it is now taking things to new heights to add to these wonderful things we love about the island that make Mallorca and the Balearics so desired around the globe.

Celebrity Magazine exists because this island is not just a holiday destination. It is also a permanent residence, a home, for expats from all corners of the world that live so in harmony with the local community. With this in mind, and my strong belief that change is good, here at Celebrity Magazine we too have decided it’s time for a change. The slower and more relaxed pace of life that we have all become accustomed to in Spain means that we have been gifted the opportunity to seize this way of living and shine a spotlight onto everything that makes Mallorca so unique with our “coffee-table-ready”

With the help of our wonderful writers and contributors we have been able to increase the content, so dive into the pages to discover interesting things about the island and everything that it has to offer.

We are proud to introduce to you Celebrity Magazine: Luxury Edition which will be in your hands in time to celebrate our 20-year anniversary. Although I can’t claim the rights to the birth of Celebrity Magazine (this comes with many thanks to Ken and Angie whose vision brings us to this pivotal moment

in the Celebrity Magazine history,) I can be proud of what has been achieved since they handed over the reins.

With some hard work, a huge amount of effort, and a few knocks along the way, I can put my name to the growth and expansion of Celebrity Magazine, together with my muchloved and ever-supportive business partners, Matthew Cull and Larrick Ebanks.

We are truly blessed with the talent that contributes to the magazine, our amazing team of writers, editors, photographers, video editors, graphic design specialists, presenters and everyone else who we consider as part of the Celebrity family are truly appreciated. A special thankyou to Ben Mulvey, our feature writer who has been with us since the beginning and leads the way with content, supporting everything we do.

I am humbled by the dedication and care everyone brings to the table, to bring you, our loyal readers, the Celebrity Magazine: Luxury Edition.

Our events have gone from strength to strength, our social media presence is expanding beyond all predictions and our CMTV YouTube channel continues to gain traction.

Lastly, I will finish as I started, by thanking you. You follow us, support us and prove to us that Mallorca is a place where friendships are made, and families are formed.

Me siento muy orgullosa de poderos presentar nuestro Celebrity Magazine: Luxury Edition.

Habiendo residido en Mallorca durante más de 23 años, he podido observar muchos cambios, especialmente en el sector inmobiliario; y, como propietaria de Calvia Properties y de ortalreu.com, el mundo de la inmobiliaria es mi gran pasión. Por ello, haber salido de mi zona de confort hacia el mundo editorial me intimidó un poco al principio, pero por suerte ha resultado ser una experiencia altamente satisfactoria.

Mallorca siempre se ha percibido como una isla de gran clase y riqueza y es fantástico poder mostrar todos los aspectos que nos enamoran de esta isla y que hacen que Mallorca y las Baleares sean tan admiradas por el mundo entero.

Celebrity Magazine existe porque esta isla no es solo un destino turístico. Es el lugar de residencia permanente de muchos extranjeros de todo el mundo, quienes han hecho de ella su hogar, viviendo en armonía con la población mallorquina. Teniendo esto en cuenta, y convencida de que todo cambio es bueno, en Celebrity Magazine hemos decidido que es hora de cambiar un poco. Esta gran calidad de vida, más tranquila y menos ajetreada, que disfrutamos en la isla nos brinda la oportunidad de poner el foco en lo que hace de Mallorca un lugar único: nuestra edición de lujo Celebrity Magazine Luxury Edition.

Con la ayuda de nuestros fabulosos autores y colaboradores hemos logrado ampliar el contenido, por lo que os invitamos a hojear sus páginas y descubrir todas las cosas maravillosas e interesantes que nos ofrece esta isla.

Aunque no formé parte de sus albores (aprovechando esta oportunidad para agradecer a Ken y a Angie su visión original, que nos ha llevado a este importante momento en la trayectoria de la revista), me siento satisfecha de lo que hemos conseguido desde que tomamos el mando.

20 unvergessliche Jahre.

Ein herzliches Danke an unsere treuen Leser. Es ist eine Zeitreise, die uns mit Stolz erfüllt, wenn wir auf die vergangene Jahren zurückblicken und sehen, wie aus einem bescheidenen Anfang eine etabliertes Life-Style-Magazin für Meldungen zu regionalen und überregionalen Themen geworden ist. Aus diesem besonderen Anlass freue ich mich Ihnen unser Luxus-Ausgabe zu praesentieren.

Mallorca war schon immer eine Insel des Reichtums und der Klasse und geht es jetzt in neue Dimensionen, um diese wunderbaren Dinge, die wir an der Insel lieben und die Mallorca und die Balearen weltweit so begehrt machen, noch zu verstärken.

Das Celebrity Magazine gibt es, weil diese Insel nicht nur ein Urlaubsziel ist. Sie ist auch ein ständiger Wohnsitz, ein Zuhause, für Auswanderer aus allen Ecken der Welt, die harmonisch mit der lokalen Gemeinschaft leben. In diesem Sinne und in der festen Überzeugung, dass Veränderungen gut sind, haben auch wir hier beim Celebrity Magazine beschlossen, dass es Zeit für eine Veränderung ist. Das langsamere und entspanntere Lebenstempo, an das wir uns alle in Spanien gewöhnt haben, bedeutet, dass wir die Gelegenheit bekommen haben, diese Lebensweise zu nutzen und mit unserem Celebrity Magazine dazustellen, was Mallorca so einzigartig und lebenswert macht.

Obwohl ich nicht die Rechte an der Geburt des Celebrity Magazine für mich beanspruchen kann (dies ist Ken und Angie zu verdanken, deren Vision uns zu diesem entscheidenden Moment in der Geschichte des Celebrity Magazine geführt hat), kann ich stolz auf das sein, was erreicht wurde.

Mit harter Arbeit, großem Einsatz und Rückschlägen auf dem Weg, kann ich das Wachstum und die Expansion des Celebrity Magazine zusammen mit meinen sehr geschätzten und stets unterstützenden Geschäftspartnern Matthew Cull und Larrick Ebanks sehen.

Wir sind gesegnet mit Talenten, die zum Magazin beitragen, und wir schätzen unser großartiges Team von Autoren, Redakteuren, Fotografen, Videoredakteuren, Grafikdesignern, Moderatoren und allen anderen, die wir als Teil der Celebrity-Familie betrachten, sehr. Celebrity Magazine Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Can it really be twenty years ago? I can see it now. Turquoise sea shimmering, sun warm on my back, toes dug snugly into the sand, sipping champagne on Portals Beach. Nothing special about that. We spent most summer Sundays with Ken and Angela Ross lazing on the beach. But that particular Sunday Ken and Angela were eager to disclose the vision of their new concept. A glossy coffee-table Mallorca magazine, filled with photos of local events and visiting celebrities. Ken, a longtime top fashion, glamour and showbiz photographer, was incredibly well connected with international celebrities while his wife Angie, a former top model, was the ideal partner for top beauty tips and gossip. As we brainstormed, the seed of Celebrity Magazine was born.

“Working for two Mallorca newspapers, we were constantly reminded of the need for a publication featuring solely the social events of the island. Mallorca was now going through an amazing transformation. It was becoming the new trendy and glamorous Mediterranean location for top restaurants, bars and designer shopping, all set against a backdrop of white luxury villas and sleek superyachts” explained Ken.  “With help from a prominent business couple, Tony and Margaret Whittaker, who also offered the use of office space, Angela and I were soon ready to launch the product of many hours of hard work and research; the first glossy edition of ‘Celebrity Magazine’. A Mallorca style publication of the already established and popular ‘Hello’.  It surely hit the mark as they liked us enough to buy some of our stories.”

The magazine was an immediate success, with copies disappearing within minutes of them going on display.  As these photos highlight, the

magazine indeed went on to document through its glossy pages a unique era in Mallorca’s history.

The only downside was the end of our Sundays on the beach! This was a result of Ken and Angie’s mantra that no Mallorca occasion could be complete without Celebrity present. Thus they were too busy rushing from party to event, with Ken clutching his trusty camera, Angie close behind with pen and notepad, for further relaxing beach days.

Mallorca was in its heyday. The island packed with beautiful people. The summers saw Hollywood A listers, politicians, famous sportsmen and women, and even royalty flock to our shores. It was the place to be and the place to be seen.  Elizabeth Taylor, Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Goldie Hawn, to name but a few, would be sure to drop anchor in Mallorca during their exotic Mediterranean cruises.  As the movers and shakers moored their super yachts for a Mallorcan night out,

Celebrity would be waiting for them.  No local party or charity event was of any worth without Celebrity in attendance.  Ken, would busily snap glamorous partygoers eager to be highlighted in the new magazine. Guests would then wait with anticipation for the next edition, excited to see whether they would be included on one of its shiny pages.  It was the magazine for the island; its pages where locals could mingle freely with top celebrities.  Those were the days of baby boomers at the height of their partying days.  A joyous time captured by Celebrity. There was plenty of madness and impromptu dancing with so many clubs and bars. However, Wellies was always the most popular Puerto Portals haunt. Always buzzing and ready to accommodate those up for one last drink or two before calling it a night. It was the place where particularly the British would gravitate and know they would feel amongst friends. Top celebrities, even Princess Diana would drop in for a Wellieburger

while Julian Lennon, son of legendary Beatle John, was also a frequent visitor. Usually accompanied by his remarkable mother Cynthia, who had enthralling life stories to impart.  Pirates annual Charity Premiere, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, would also attract a host of popular celebrities, including many of the EastEnders cast. Most of them rounded up by Steve McFadden (aka Phil Mitchell), who was a local himself, owning a home on the island.  Considered one of the biggest Mallorca annual events, it was the hottest ticket in town. Indeed, such was the generosity that between 2004 and 2016 Pirates raised an incredible for 738,744€ for GOSH. However, local charities also benefitted. In 2014 they divided 25,275.12€ between 5 charities, GOSH, Cancer Research Group Mallorca, Milk on Mondays (Mediterranea), Son Espases Children’s Ward and Stop FA. Each benefitting to the tune of 5,055.03€. In 2015 the Pirates event raised 32,703.62€ with 8,175.91€

for each of their 4 chosen charities: GOSH, Son Espases Children’s Ward, The Salvation Army and the Shambhala Fundacion. The final Premiere in 2016 raised 54,080.13€  with each of their 5 charities: GOSH, Son Espases, Help for Heroes, Bloodwise and the Lions Mallorca receiving 10,816.03€.

Apart from glamorous photos, Celebrity would also conduct in depth one-on-one interviews to fill the summer edition. I particularly remember spending time with the much-loved Barbara Windsor

when, sadly, I detected the first signs of her dementia. I was impressed by the way the cast rallied round to cover her moments of confusion. “I’m a professional, an old trooper” she told me as she squeezed my hand. She took a deep breath, pulled back her shoulders, smiled and went on to do all that was expected of her.

In August 2007, Margaret and Tony Whittaker opened their elegant Mood Beach Club in Puerto Portals staging the glitziest party of the decade, attended by VIP’s including Hollywood golden couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This elegant and stylish venue, with panoramic sea views, went on to host some of the most prestigious events to fill Celebrity pages.

Ever the professional, Ken never missed a photo opportunity. At the lavish summer opening of Nikki Beach, I watched in amusement as he walked straight into an ambush.  Amid great fanfare, an impressive army of hunky men marched into the throng. It

was quite a sight. Bearers dressed as gladiators, carried their casket, filled to the brim with dozens of bottles of champagne.  Ken threw down his canape and rushed to follow the parade. He was so busy snapping photos, he failed to spot the bottles being hoisted aloft and shaken vigorously. Within seconds a cascade of bubbles had totally drenched him. Once his precious camera had been wiped down and he

had been provided with a dry t-shirt, he was remarkably unfazed and cheerful. “I got some amazing shots!” was all he said.

Celebrity’s success was endorsed by none other than Spain’s former King, Juan Carlos I. Covering the annual Puerto Portals Breitling Royal Yacht Regatta, Ken and Angie found themselves amongst a large jostling crowd of world media and elbows-out paparazzi, with

little chance of getting close enough to the King for that special snap. However, to their amazement the King singled them out and walking towards them, shook their hands, asked about their new magazine, and wished them luck. This began a unique relationship with the King, who later was to wave them through his army of tight security for exclusive photos.

amongst his six companions. Unbelievably the King then suggested we take an exclusive photograph for our Magazine, laughingly pointing his finger at us and telling us it had to be for the front cover,” reminisced Ken.  However, after 16 hectic years, ill health started to take its toll on Ken and Angie and they decided to sell up and move to Eastbourne, ensuring they stayed close to the sea.

Thus in early 2018, Celebrity was given a new lease of life. Initially the takeover was to be a joint effort, but the proposed partnership didn’t work out, leaving Donna Suarez to take over the reins single handedly. However, ever the business entrepreneur, within 12 months she had recruited Directors Matthew Cull and Larrick Ebanks to make the leadership team complete. This dynamic trio embarked on their

journey as new custodians of the beloved Celebrity Magazine.

The team got to work quickly as the magazine was soon hauled into the digital age, while still maintaining the original feel of the printed product.

“As many people do, I hold Celebrity Magazine close to my heart, and with such fond memories, I wanted to continue the good work that Ken and Angie had devoted so much of their

lives.” Donna explained. “It was a brave decision to make, as my current businesses Calvia Properties and Portal REU were thriving. But my extensive knowledge of the real estate sector motivated me, knowing that publicity is one of the most important factors, not just for real estate, but for businesses in all sectors. Armed with that knowledge, I knew that a magazine that promoted Mallorca businesses, together with great content, plus the advantages of adding the online presence was sure

to be a huge success. I wasn’t wrong. But most definitely I needed experts in the marketing and publishing world on board. Matthew and Larrick are an amazing asset to the company, and together with a fantastic team of writers and designers, we catapulted Celebrity Magazine into the 21st century.

Now six years in, I’m proud to say, be it online or in print, we have one of the islands most read magazines. Moving with the times, Celebrity has diversified to include a strong online presence

at celebritymallorca.es. This includes a monthly digital newsletter, CMTV YouTube channel and more recently we have started producing popular podcasts. Not forgetting Celebrity ‘Nice To Meet You’ networking and other exciting events.“

Certainly, guided by this enthusiastic progressive team, Celebrity Mallorca looks set to expand further and continue to be enjoyed by the island for many years to come.

Meet The KinsellasA Look Back Through the Pages

Regular readers of Celebrity Magazine will no doubt be familiar with Drs Martin & Hanna Kinsella. Since the very beginning of Celebrity’s reincarnation, this impressive couple have been in every edition keeping us up to date with their increasingly busy lives. For this special edition, I spoke to Hanna and Martin to look back through the pages at what they have achieved over the last few years and to find out what they are doing next…

I had met Martin several times at social events in Mallorca through mutual friends before I ever interviewed him. I knew he was a doctor and that he specialised in aesthetics but I wasn’t really sure what that meant. Over the years since I have learnt a lot about this ever-changing industry and realise quite how complex it is and how many people rely on these treatments for their self-esteem, physical improvements, and general wellbeing.

and here in Mallorca, Martin offers a wide variety of treatments ranging from standard botox, dermal fillers and laser hair removal to much more complex treatments including hormone therapies and non-invasive surgeries. Martin prides himself on staying at the top of his game and keeping himself well-informed about the latest products and technologies to offer his clients the very best treatments.

Already knowing Martin, I had still never met Hanna but when I finally did we instantly

hit it off. This confident woman fills the space she is in with an effervescence that instantly captures your attention - and her distinctive accent and voice certainly help! The first time I interviewed her, we were mainly talking about her recent ‘role’ on ITVBe’s The Real Housewives of Cheshire. As the UK’s answer to the successful franchise in various states and cities in the US, this show proved an instant hit. With less screeching and name-calling for the slightly more expressive Americans, this show featured successful women going about their daily,

if not somewhat glamorous, lives in the sought-after area of Cheshire in the north of England.

What instantly struck me with Hanna was that she seemed unfazed by the prospect of being on a show that millions would tune into, her confidence apparent even then. Perhaps this has something to do with the success she has built for herself in her career as a dentist. As owner of Kiln Lane Dental in St Helen’s in the UK, Hanna is an expert in prosthodontics, cosmetic dental treatments

such as Invisalign, composite bonding and veneers and non-surgical aesthetics.

One of the very first articles we wrote about the couple was about their wedding day, a fairytale event with everything you would expect from a couple who value perfection. Shortly after this article, we followed up with the news that Hanna and Martin were expecting their first child and a few editions later, baby Maximus was here. Balancing parenthood with a TV career, and two busy individual careers was initially a challenge to the new parents but they took it all in

their stride and managed to find the perfect balance between work life and home life.

At the same time as raising their new baby, the couple launched the Dr Kinsella Skin range of products designed and trialled by Martin in his clinic in Hale. The range is part of Martin’s mission “to tackle the ageing process from a clinical viewpoint”. The range has proved hugely successful and has featured in the British press and even on QVC with Martin discussing the various benefits of these fantastic products.

As Martin had a skincare range, it was only right that Hanna should have a dental care range and so Icy Bear was born. Icy Bear is a range of products that not only whitens teeth but also helps protect against cavities and includes whitening strips, toothpaste, mouthwash and toothbrushes, all designed by Hanna. A short while after the launch of Icy Bear’s main range, Hanna launched

Icy Bear Cubs for kids with a selection of products made specifically for children. The range was launched alongside an app for parents to download for their kids that encourages them to brush their teeth and make the whole process fun. The range has proved successful beyond Hanna’s initial dreams and is now sold in Harrods!

With one child, two product lines and their respective careers keeping them busy, it was a surprise when Hanna told me she was pregnant, just a few months after Max was born. Little Kimia came into the world with her thick head of hair and beautiful eyes and joined this little family. Max and Kimia are so close in age that they are often mistaken for twins and play together happily and have

completed Martin and Hanna’s lives. So, what does the future hold for this family? With their businesses running well and the children happy, the couple have decided to make the move to Mallorca and raise their children here. Although they will keep one foot firmly in the UK, they will move over to the new home that they are building on the island as soon as it is completed next year. Martin will continue to see his patients in the UK but will grow the clinic here in Santa

Ponsa to provide even more services. The kids will benefit from an outdoor lifestyle, the languages they will learn and the new experiences that they will have as expat children.

Palma has grown over the last few years to become one of the hotspots of gastronomy in Spain with international cuisine now available on all street corners around the island. Even supermarkets have realised that tastes are changing and people are searching for new flavours to keep them satisfied. With so many options now available, these globe-trotting flavour-seekers are slowly forgetting humble British cuisine. Still, Palma may have found a way to turn this all around in the form of Market Kitchen in Santa Catalina.

Market Kitchen has quickly become the go-to restaurant for those seeking a truly British experience with an extensive menu of delicious food, a quirky interior reminiscent of a London bistro and the friendliest of owners, Rob and Amber. Step through the doors, past the motorbike parked outside, and the first thing you will see is a beaming smile as Amber greets you and steers you

towards your table. If you can pull your attention away from the gorgeous and effervescent Amber for just a second, you will quickly be drawn to the amazing artwork and objet d’art around the room - a carefully chosen exhibition of pieces that Amber and Rob both love and admire.

Now you’ve taken in your surroundings you will find yourself asking the same question

that Matthew and I found ourselves asking when we enjoyed an incredible lunch at Market Kitchen - can we eat it all, and now!? As you peruse the cocktail menu, Amber is on hand to recommend some of her latest cocktail concoctions, and if you’ve met her before then she will remember what it is that you like and make some suggestions. Sip on the best margarita in Palma or

try a blackberry gin bramble (these are dangerously drinkable!) and dive into the menu.

We were fortunate enough that Rob had already pre-selected a smorgasbord of the best things on the menu for us to get an idea of the variety that the kitchen has to offer and with all of his experience cooking around the world, having cooked for the Royal Family, published some books and appeared on TV, we weren’t disappointed - just a few kilos heavier!

To kick things off we were served a beautifully creamy burrata with a homemade tomato ketchup style sauce and basil, followed by the flakiest of sausage rolls with an apricot chutney, a watermelon and feta salad made with fresh ingredients from the market next door, and serrano ham with a parmesan crisp. Considering this was just to “kick things off”, the portions were generous and

every ingredient on the plate was served there to complement everything else.

Next up, some of the best serrano ham I have ever tasted - salty, crispy and packed with that punchy flavour that only serrano offers - and served with a sweet melon from the island.

Already in our element with the flavours of each of these dishes, everything is served like a work of art with the presentation as important to Rob as the food itself.

As our wine glasses were filled with a smooth Albariño, Albamar, that was provided to Market Kitchen by our lovely friends at the Wine Industry, Rob appeared with more food and if the starters were the opening credits, we were certainly into the main event now!

The first thing that caught our eyes was the big fluffy pastry on top of what we discovered was a creamy chicken and mushroom pie served with carrots poached in beef stock and potatoes. A simple comfort food like

this was amplified by subtle flavours, delicate combinations and just the right amount of naughtiness to make it delicious. I also discovered that chicken crackling is my new favourite food and I shall hold Rob fully responsible if my bikini body suffers in 2024! Galician beef with horseradish crisps was the next dish to arrive which had all of the textures that beef should have and a pickled, almost peppery taste that worked wonderfully after the creaminess of the chicken pie.

And then the pièce de résistance, the fish and chips. If ever there was a chance that this humble dish was losing popularity, set Rob on the case and it will soon be at the top of everyone’s favourites list! This fish and chips is without fail the best fish and chips I have ever eaten and Matthew, between mouthfuls, told me that he agreed wholeheartedly. The batter was crispy but not heavy, the fish flaky

but not oily and the flavour incredible. Even the ‘boring’ little garden pea got a glow-up with its own space on the table and all of the sides stood their ground.

Practically bursting from all of the food but in a slight daze at just how good everything was, we carried on tucking into the red wine, a rioja called Maisulan El Hondon which was smoky with a black fruity taste and some subtle spices.

Thinking that we couldn’t possibly eat again, out came Rob with the next array of beautiful dishes. Too good to neglect, we picked up our forks and dug into a Caesar salad with crispy chicken, the coveted chicken skin, and a light Caesar sauce. This was quickly followed by confit duck with seasonal figs and oranges and a cauliflower dish with Asian spices, salsa verde, harissa and tomatoes - a dish that Rob discovered during his time in Tel Aviv. With Rob’s promise that this was our last dish, we finished off this marathon of deliciousness with a Galician pork dish made with 30-day

matured pork that is chestnut fed and served with caramelised lemons, figs, ricotta and mint. Every single dish was an experience in itself with such unique flavours but somehow everything seemed to flow together in a culinary symphony that was as much a treat for the eyes as for the tastebuds.

Amber and Rob have become friends over the handful of times that I have been to Market Kitchen but even if it is your first time visiting the restaurant, they take the time to come and speak to you. If you have read the local press recently, you will see that this couple have battled red tape beyond anyone’s wildest dreams on the island but have fought through and come out the other side victorious. As Confucius said, “Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues”, and Amber and Rob are the epitome of this as they open up with fresh smiles, unrivalled gratitude and the strength to continue.

As Rob brought out some of the incredible desserts we chatted about what it is the

Market Kitchen is all about. Quality ingredients, locally sourced meat and veg, and a bit of a twist on even the basic dishes are what Rob tells me he holds as his main vision and his experience means that he does this in a way that appears effortless but has taken years to perfect.

After a few hiccups (that turned into fullblown coughs at points!) that they have now valiantly battled, Market Kitchen is going from strength to strength and is establishing itself as one of the main hotspots on the gastronomic scene on the island.

THE JOY OF RON

When Ronald Hawes walks into a room, full of integrity and goodwill, you immediately sense an assured confidence that likely comes from his commitment to helping others and the true pleasure he gets from it. Most of you will already know Ron but for those of you who have yet to meet him, he has dedicated the last eight years to helping children in need in the Baleares, in the form of The JoyRon Foundation that Ron and his wife Josephine registered in 2015.

The foundation has already raised well over half a million euros through its events, galas, merchandise and donations, and they are well on the way to reaching the million-euro milestone that Ron has often said would be his ultimate dream for the foundation.

The JoyRon Foundation has funded many projects and provided much care for the children, one of the most memorable being the cinema they built for Son Espases Hospital. As anyone who has spent some time in Spain will know, this is a mighty feat considering the politics, bureaucracy and safety procedures involved in doing most things, let alone something of this scale. For Ron, it was all worth it, just knowing the comfort it would bring to so many children for years to come. A few months ago I reached out to Ron to collaborate with me on The Larrick ECMO Project, because I knew he was someone I could trust, and someone I could count on for his knowledge and understanding of a life dedicated to service for the betterment of humanity. I wanted to know what was the driving force that led Ron and his wife to set up the Foundation, how Ron, who is now in his eighties, is still full of enthusiasm to create more fund-raising events, and what he would like to see in the future

of JoyRon’s journey. He told me that helping people and the support of the community keeps him going and I just hope that we can offer the same for The Larrick ECMO Project as it continues on its journey.

1. What year was the JoyRon Foundation formed? During the years 2015/2016, Hence we have been operational for a period of some eight years. However due to Covid we were unable to be operational from March 2020 to early 2022, and thereby unable to hold any fund raising events and also no access to community service areas that we were supporting. However that being said within the six years of

being operational, we have been able to raise some euro 530,000 plus, all of which has been 100% for the benefit of Children in Need in the Baleares.

2. How did the name come about? The name Fundacion JoyRon came about, by taking the abbreviated name of my wife Josephine “Jo” and the abbreviated name of myself Ronald “Ron”, put them together “Jo” y “ Ron” makes JoyRon to bring Joy, Comfort and Essential Support to The Children in Need in the Baleares.

3. Why did you want to work specifically with children?  Not that I am seeking any aspect of sympathy from anyone, but my own personal childhood was not that pleasant and enjoyable. Born in London with an extremely strict Victorian father, living in a somewhat poverty environment, with bars at the sub basement bedroom window, within very basic accomdation, together with rats in the cellar and no family life, plus very much bullied at school and no real support. An occassional hug was very much the treat of the year. Hence, knowing what it is to want some affection and a little comfort, I always promised myself that when I am older and the time is right, I

want to help children in need. “Children need to feel safe and not Vulnerable”.

4. Did you work with any other charities before forming the JoyRon Foundation? And if so, share a little with us about the type of work you were involved with?  In my thirties, before my banking career really became a 12 hour plus per day, six days a week career, I joined RoundTable UK and thereby volunteered to help both children and the elderly within the local community of Chingford London. but once attendance in the evenings to University to complete my MBA was required I had to give up the charity work.

5. What was your profession before you started JoyRon? What was your role in your previous profession? When I left school, aged 16, my academic qualifications were almost zero. However, somehow, to this day I do not know how, I passed an interview in the City of London to be employed by one of the UK commercial banks, must have been my lucky day. I worked and studied quite hard and passed my banking examination qualifications, the equvalent to a first level degree at university. Having already left home, I escaped from my childhood poverty days and my life was beginning to take shape. I moved into the International Banking world, working for an American Bank in the City of London and decided to study in my own time for a Masters Degree in Business Administration. This lead me further forward, into various management roles with European and Global areas of responsilibity.

6. How many years were you in this profession? I entered the banking world in 1958 and retired from the banking

arena in 2007 some 49 years later. When I retired I was an International Operations Manger resposible for some 82 units in 34 different countries with some 8,000 staff matrixed into me. So eventually from a somewhat lonely, sad and uncomfortable childhood, life had completely turned around. Soon after retiring from the banking world I moved to Mallorca.

7. During your childhood, did you ever sense that you would work to help others at some point in your life? Have to admit during my childhood I never really thought about doing charity work, as I did not really understand the needs of others in this wolrld. I needed to find my way, the best way I could. But once I became involved with the

RoundTable UK organisation, I knew that at sometime later in my life, I would return to some aspect of helping others

8. What was the final deciding factor that prompted you to set up the foundation and commit 100% to the cause?  Once I moved to Mallorca soon after my retirement from the business world, I knew I wanted to return to charitable work of some sort, hence I became involved with various charitable organisations on the island of Mallorca, but found the infrastructure and aspects of internal buracratic processes within most charitable organisations, inhibited me from achiving my vision of what I wanted to do. Hence, in 2015 Fundacion JoyRon was born with myself as Founder and President together with my wife Josephine as Secertariat and Rafael Belloch as Vice President and Treasurer. Although, I am far from being a multimillionaire, at the same time I have to admit life has treated me quite well since leaving home and finding my way. Life today is much different from that of my childhood of living in poverty, being bullied and subjected to an extreamly  unpleasant Victorian father agression. It is now “Payback Time”. Hence I made the decision (while I can), to personally fund all administration running expenses of JoyRon Foundation, so that 100% of all funds raised from donations and events can go to the Children in Need.

9. What are two of the highlights that have stood out the most since starting JoyRon? First highlight that I am delighted to have undertaken is the Identify, Finance, Build and Donate Program within JoyRon Foundation. Financing and completion of construction projects is an ongoing process within JoyRon Foundation, the

objective being to provide worthwhile physical and tangible facilities that can benefit MANY children in need in the Baleares, both for TODAY and for MANY YEARS to come. The Foundation has however in the past and will continue to directly do so, help individual children who are in need. Todate, as can be seen on our website we have completed three construction projects and as we speak have a fourth construction project, pending building license approval. The second highlight that always gives me satisfaction is to see the happiness and delight that we can give to the children that we help.

10. Would you say you have achieved a lot of what you had initially planned for your charity’s contribution? Or does it keep exceeding your expectations?  As of today I am about where I wanted it to be, Maybe a couple of years behind schedule due to Covid, My target was to reach one million euros raised for the Children by end of 2026, Maybe it will now take until 2028.

11. How rewarding do you find charity work and what in particular is rewarding about it? I can honestly say I have never been a “Reciever” I am much more a “Giver” I also consider myself a fairly Compassionate Person. In fact as a Manager within the Banking Industry most of my staff considered me to be an extremely hard and demanding  manager to work for, always expecting more than just a pound of flesh, but at the sametime, I was also referred to by many, as being the most Compassionate Manager in the organisation

12. What is your projection for the future of JoyRon? What do you hope to achieve in the next year or so? One day I expect,

I will fully retire, but in the meantime I work towards the one million euro, charity fund raising target that I have set for JoyRon Foundation and also at the same time identify someone to take over the foundation and take it on to even greater achievements.

13. Here’s a fun one, what emoji do you use the most when sending a WhatsApp? Strong Arm -  donating

14. How would you like to be remembered when you retire? Or do you plan to keep working further into your retirement? Whilst I have good health, it is not my intention to retire. I need to be active and motivated. With respect to JoyRon Foundation I have with the help of my fellow officers, now five in number and our volunteers, reached just over halfway towards reaching my objective of raising euro one million, for the benefit of “Children in Need in the Baleares. Once that objective is reached, then maybe I step down and let someone else with hopefully, much drive, enthusism  and motivation take over JoyRon Foundation and take it to even greater heights.

15. What advice would you give to those seeking a life of helping others? Stay Positive and Strong, Lead by Example, “Recognise that we cannot help everybody, but at the same time encourage everybody to recognise that everybody can help somebody”.

After the success of our events “GRACIAS” the pop-up Charity event at SISO beach and “THANK YOU” our dinner gala held at the Bendinat Golf club and “ART FANTASTIC” at Leonardo Hotel, we continue to organize our charity events to raise funds for a new ECMO machine (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and warming machine for Son Espases Hospital. Estimated cost of €40,000 for the ECMO and €36,000 for the heater. This equipment is crucial to save lives for open heart surgery and lung operations.

Gudula Becker - Sculptor Her Work. Her Story.

This energetic artist lady was born in Germany and at the age of nine moved to London with her parents. She later decided that she would attend the “University of Life,” travelling around Europe for 12years, studying languages and the various cultures made her into the woman she is today; a woman without labels.

She finally settled back in London at the age of 31 and worked in the luxury furniture business. In London, she also started a family having her wonderful son Francesco and began her artistic journey. This lead her to discovering a natural talent for sculpture, especially the human body which has become her speciality; something that started as a stress-reducing hobby quickly became her calling.

She has had numerous exhibitions; in London, Brighton and Mallorca. She is continually pushing her creativity,

loving Raku firing. She strives by the challenge of a commission, recently creating a unique take on a Porsche 911 for a Porsche collecator in the UK. She also gives back, charity being key to who she is. She loves working with children and helps several cancer charities; something very personal and close to her heart. She is now involved with “The Larrick ECMO Project” which was set up by Larrick Ebanks to raise funds to buy a lifesaving ECMO machine for Son Espases Hospital, curating an exhibition

in April 2024 featuring several wonderful artists. She tirelessly works to organise fairs and shows featuring local artists here in Mallorca; promoting not only her own work but also getting publicity for other artists and their work.

She says that moving to Mallorca was the best decision she ever made, as the island is like living in paradise, especially for creativity. It is such a social island and along with her photographer husband, this is now “home.”

Diese energiegeladene Künstlerin wurde in Deutschland geboren und zog im Alter von neun Jahren mit ihren Eltern nach London. Später beschloss sie, die „Universität des Lebens“ zu besuchen. Zwölf Jahre lang reiste sie durch Europa und studierte Sprachen und die verschiedenen Kulturen, was sie zu der Frau machte, die sie heute ist. Eine Frau ohne Etiketten. Im Alter von 31 Jahren ließ sie sich schließlich wieder in London nieder und arbeitete in Luxusmöbelbranche. In London gründete sie mit ihrem wunderbaren Sohn Francesco eine Familie und begann ihre künstlerische Reise. Dies führte dazu, dass sie ein natürliches Talent für Skulptur entdeckte, insbesondere für den menschlichen Körper, der zu ihrer Spezialität geworden ist. Was als stressreduzierendes Hobby begann, wurde schnell zu ihrer Berufung.

Ibiza Then And Now with Judge Jules & Amanda O’Riordan

The difference between the ‘old’ Ibiza and the new started as soon as one landed at the airport twenty years ago. Firstly, you were tired, as direct scheduled flights from the UK to the island only started in the late 90s. Before then, one needed to fly via Madrid or Barcelona, or take a charter flight, which wasn’t really do-able, as it restricted travellers to an exact seven day stay. Not much use for hop-in hop-out DJs.

One thing that has never changed are the nightclub billboards, visible as soon as one exits the airport. The difference now is that there are SO many more of them, lining the entire road from Ibiza Town to San Antonio. And THAT road. Back then it was a slow, single track road, anecdotally known to be the most dangerous in Europe. When it was redeveloped into a semi-motorway, just over ten years ago, the new road seemed like the embodiment of the ‘new’ Ibiza. Road casualties, particularly outside superclubs Amnesia and Privilege almost dried up overnight. Nevertheless, the charm of the old road’s traffic chaos on the journey from the airport was lost forever.

We bought our first house in Ibiza in 1997, at a time when Ibiza’s property prices lagged substantially behind those in London, and the very favourable pound to peseta exchange rate made one’s money stretch even further. But a matter as seemingly straightforward as buying furniture was

so much more complicated than in our home town of London. The choice wasn’t great, and none of the big chains like Descanshop or IKEA were on the island. Ibiza’s “small shop” culture was charming, but nevertheless it was a culture shock for big city dwellers like us, accustomed to a myriad of shops and delivery possibilities. How could one talk about Ibiza (new or old) without mentioning its clubs? And where does one start when comparing the island’s nightlife then and now? Back then, a ‘hippy’ rather than a corporate culture prevailed. Get to know someone behind the bar and one’s drinks measures increased significantly. VIP areas, whilst they still existed, represented a very small proportion of the square meterage of each of the discotheques.

Whilst we arrived into Ibiza too late to experience the likes of Pacha, Ku and Amnesia ‘uncoverered’, i.e. without roofs (they were forced to ‘cover up’ in the mid

80s), the vibe was still very ‘free’ compared to now. Closing times, if they existed in law at all, were rarely enforced. Dancing till dawn meant dancing until there were less than 100 in the venue, at which point the club closed, whether it was 7, 8, 9 or 10am. Furthermore, after hours venues could open without restriction (which isn’t legal any more). Those with the feet and adrenaline to carry on could rock up to Space at 10am, park directly outside and carry on, in a frenzy of 24/7 partying. That was Ibiza, from early June to late September.

In 2024, Ibiza clubbing all seems rather ‘organised’ and corporate. Strictly regulated drinks measures, everyone out at 6am and none of the generally dishevelled chaos on the streets between 7 and 10am. Of course, one could argue that it’s what 2024 clubbers want. The growth in daytime (and not night-time) clubbing can be attributed to the pool parties of Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Experts will attest that today’s 20

somethings drink less and take less drugs than their predecessors, so modern Ibiza’s mega daytime pool parties are catering for what people want.

Finally, no piece about Ibiza would be complete without a nod to its restaurants. The “classics” of 20 years ago are largely still present on the island – e.g. Las Dos Lunas, La Brasa, Sa Capella, Ama Lur – but in

2024 the range of alternatives is dazzling. Ibiza has always been a very strong spot for dining, comparing favourably to anywhere in the world. Whilst the influx of ‘VIPs’ hasn’t universally been a positive thing, it’s done wonders for the island’s culinary scene in 2024.

There is nothing worse than being someone constantly moaning that “things aren’t as

good as they used to be”. And that wouldn’t be a fair accusation to level at Ibiza. In 2024, things are just different. Holiday locations are products, and like any product, holiday locations need to evolve and develop, in order to compete with locations elsewhere in the marketplace. And in 2024, Ibiza competes exceptionally well.

ALL THE FEELS FOR SUMMER 2024!

I have finally had a window to take my foot off the gas and catch up with you lovely people. I am very touched by those of you who enquired about my absence from the last few Celebrity Magazine issues but thankfully no big dramas or telenovelas to report this end, just DJ gigs in Ibiza and the UK keeping me busy and some exciting Ibiza 2024 collaborations that I will share with you.

First, though, I’m thrilled to have been invited to add my voice and share all things Ibiza with you in this amazing “Luxury” Celebrity Anniversary Issue. For those of you Ibiza Virgins, here is a little run down of Ibiza’s unique magical history. Ibiza’s aura of magic and mysterious energy surrounds the White Isle and the Phoenicians believed Ibiza to be a sacred place, blessed by the gods. Nostradamus predicted ‘Ibiza would be Earth’s final refuge’ (look it up, it’s spooky) adding to the island’s mystical air and where else can you go for a rock like this? Es Vedrà is the most magnetic point on Earth due to the high concentration of magnetite in the rocks, it has a long history and has been mentioned in several myths and legends. Some people believe it has spiritual or mystical energy, while others simply appreciate its natural beauty, the perfect place to visit for those into contemplative meditative moods. That’s the obligatory history synopsis done and dusted, but what you want to know is what’s hot in 2024!

As I mentioned I’ve had my teeth into some amazing projects that will bear fruit this summer and the big news on the clubbing front is that London’s famous LGBTQIA/Inclusive Spanish Club night “GAYZPACHO” is heading to Ibiza! This outrageous, colourful party has a unique, heady, sexy atmosphere. Hosted by London club legend, Jonny Woo and Ibizanborn Charm Bomb Angel, expect avant-guard performers, sizzling hot go-go’s dressed in outlandish Spanish-themed outfits and the best drag acts in bespoke creations from another

world. Plus, their very own recipe of how to make Gayzpacho - speedo and bikini-clad boys and girls wrestling in a pool of slippery tomato sauce, inspired by the iconic La Tomatina festival of Buñol in Valencia. This night brings you what London does best; an underground, edgy and original party with cutting-edge tech house and Latin house spun by the likes of Smokin Jo, Grace Sands, Jonjo Jury, Fancy Shews, Panty Soaker Soundsystem, Domtopics and yours truly. Keep in the loop because I hear that there are some big Ibiza DJ heavyweights lined up for the Gayzpacho Ibiza summer season. But where will all this excitement take place? Gayzpacho has found its home at the rising clubbing venue star NUI which is the best underground clubbing space that Ibiza has to offer and with this marriage of these tasty two you’re in for a delicious treat.

My DJ residency at the Iconic Sunrise Bar in Ibiza Old Town continues into its third year and last August the Sunrise owners and my best buddies Peter and Andreas asked me to open the brand spanking new Sunrise Shop & Play which is situated opposite the bar. Since we opened last August the shop has been a huge success and lots of fun for people to visit from the bar. The gag is we are selling selling

ladies’ and men’s fashion combined with adult toys and goodies, a first for the Balearic Islands. I encourage you to have a look at the accompanying online shop which is where you can see everything in all its glory!

I have also had the great opportunity and privilege of hopping onboard everyone’s favourite Radio Station “Ibiza Global Radio” which started with me DJing at the fabulous Italian Restaurant “Gustos” in Playa D’en Bossa doing two live DJ Sessions and more recently in the Global Radio Studio - you can catch my DJ set on YouTube. We have all had those special moments at home, in your hotel or driving from a club to an after-party listening to Global and its reach is not just for us Ibiza bronzed bodies because Global Radio shares its amazing DJs and shows to millions of listeners from all over the world who want to feel the connection with the island through music.

This year Ibiza Global Radio will present its third edition of its music festival celebrating a mammoth 20-year anniversary, where more than 30,000 Global fans will gather on the beach of S´Arenal in San Antonio during August. The festival this year will also cross the sea to offer events in different parts of the world, so tune in and be part of this exciting festival celebration

Born and raised just outside of Chicago and with almost 20 years of experience Kristine Julia brings special musical knowledge and taste to truly move a party. Maintaining loyalty to her roots she creates a diverse dance floor atmosphere with a variety of related styles. Playing in very different scenarios over the years, Kristine Julia is able to read a crowd and flow with it symbiotically.

Kristine Julia talks with Danny Whittle

KJ: Lovely for you to take the time to speak with me. How was your 2023 season?

DW: It’s been my 24th or 25th summer in Ibiza. And yeah, it’s been a great summer. I’ve been very happy. It was my first year working with this new club, Club Chinois. I thought that I had sort of semi-retired from programming nightclubs, but they brought me back out. I got the team back together, so it was a very nice summer.

KJ: I actually had a chance to go to a few events there and they were excellent! Is there anything that sets this job apart from what you’ve done in the past?

DW: The main thing that sets it apart is the reason I agreed to do it and it’s a more intimate, grown-up sort of space, compared to the big venues I’ve worked on before, like Pacha, Space, or my events with the IMS in Dalt Vila. These are 3000 or 4000 or more capacity events, whereas Chinois is 1500. We don’t need to book the DJs that we don’t particularly want to book just to fill the nightclub. So it’s less pressure and a more enjoyable space to work with on a personal level when it comes to making sure that the night’s gonna have a nice vibe around it.

KJ: Another event that I found interesting was Portside. It just made everything feel like we went back in time to the Golden Years of Ibiza. Are you planning to do more of that?

DW: Yes, we are. And you’re absolutely right. I remember back in the day, in the late 90s, or early 2000s, everybody was down at Rock Bar and Base Bar and people like Jamiroquai were coming out the window at the bar singing for everybody. That vibe down at the port really got lost when they created that

glass security wall. It really made the Port an ugly place to go. Now, they’ve gradually revived the Port and when I do my Dalt Villa event for IMS or when we do the free port show, it really reminds me of the good old days in the Port.

KJ: Yes, truly! You mentioned a few years back that Ibiza was evolving in a nice way that was keeping the balance between what it was before and what it was becoming. Do you still feel that way?

DW: I think it’s doing its best. I mean there are still beautiful parts of the island. There are still some beautiful things and events that go on, but Ibiza like everywhere else in the world is going up-market and it’s unavoidable. Even in London, I used to live in Shoreditch in the early 90s to mid-90s and my apartment there was 70 grand, now it’s nearly a million, so in certain areas it’s unavoidable. And because Ibiza, is such a small island, I mean it’s only 24 by 40 miles, the demand, especially after COVID, and the amount of people who want to live here

is kind of crazy. So I think it’s very important that the authorities keep a grip on social housing, making sure people, normal people, can live here and so on. With the evolution of the actual businesses, it’s very difficult to control.

When I was programming Pacha there was never, ever any talk of selling that business. The family owned it for over 40 years. But, when the kids don’t want to run it, they don’t want to take over, and some guy comes in with 350 million, you can understand the eighty-year-old guy going, ‘Okay I’ll sell it.’ So it’s very difficult to maintain the balance, but I do think Ibiza tries its best.

KJ: Along that line, in terms of keeping the dance floor specifically more of a unique cultural fusion from different backgrounds. Do you think that’s still possible? Or is that also moving with the market?

DW: I think it’s essential in Ibiza. And I’ll tell you now, people go ‘Oh, well that’s a VIP club.’ But there are no VIPs in the club with an empty dance floor. Ultimately, you

need a busy club, you need a vibe, you need something really cool going on, and then of course, the VIPs come. And the VIP area is helping to pay the salary of some of these incredible artists that don’t come cheap these days, so you need a bit of everything. And a lot of VIPs, to be honest, are the kids that were clubbing in the early 2000s and they still like clubbing. But now they’ve got credit

European level, as an artist, it opens you up to a bigger marketplace, not just your home country.

KJ: It’s such a great opportunity. That’s for sure. Keeping the focus on the dance floor, how do you feel about more and more phones being out? And, frankly, less dancing… Is that something that you even think about? Or do you just kind of

cards and they want a bit of comfort. But primarily, if you haven’t got a busy dance floor, you definitely haven’t got a busy VIP area either.

KJ: Very true.

DW: Let’s be clear, in general Ibiza, every night you go out, whether you go to Elrow or you go to Solomon or Marco Corolla, or Black Coffee, or whatever, it’s like a mini European tour. Very, very few club nights now in Ibiza are strictly one nationality. It used to be that the Ministry of Sound in Pacha was 90% English and they’re not anymore. It’s become a very European or even global phenomenon, not only in electronic music but in Ibiza in general.

KJ: That’s a wonderful thing!

DW: For the artists as well, if you do a gig in Ibiza, it’s like doing a mini global tour in one night. They don’t really want to just go and play for a load of English people, or a load of Spanish people or a load of German people, they really want to play to that mixed crowd. Because on a global level, certainly on a

embrace it?

DW: I embrace it. I mean, if there are smiles on faces, I don’t really care. The question is, were we not using phones because we thought it was a bad idea? Or because we didn’t have phones then? You know, we didn’t have the potential to do that, so I’m not sure. I think that maybe it would be nice if people use their phones less, but how do you police that? I would like people to be a little bit more sort of immersed in the music and the dancing and less on the phone. But generally, I think there’s a lot of it where, actually, if you looked over the night, it’s nowhere near as bad as it appears when you see these memes or the pictures on social media, where some moaning person is going, ‘Oh, look at this, all these kids have the phones out. They’re not living in the moment.’ To be honest, they just caught that moment where the kids went, ‘Oh, I’ve got to grab this!’. I would love it if people did it a little less, but I’m certainly not going to say to people that they shouldn’t do it. I don’t believe in telling people they can’t do things. As long as you’ve got smiles on faces.

KJ: I like that perspective on it. I’m sure you’ve had many, many memorable moments throughout your career on the island, but is there one that really stands out?

DW: Well, I’ll tell you three memorable moments. The first one is my International Music Summit, a sort of coming of age and becoming successful with my partners; and doing an event in Dalt Vila, which is a 2000-year-old world heritage site, and we’re doing a rave where Phoenicians and Romans used to walk, which is absolutely incredible. Also, an amazing moment for me was when I hosted U2 in Pacha for the Edge’s 40th birthday, and I got to meet them all and all the people that were with them like Kylie Minogue and Helena Christiansen and they were absolutely amazing guys. But I suppose my favourite moments ever in Ibiza have been on the Space terrace on a Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, hanging out with all my mates, just some of the best times ever.

KJ: Wow, that just gave me goosebumps!

DW: Me too!

KJ: Before we end, what can we look forward to for the 2024 season?

DW: I love the buzz now in Ibiza, there are so many rumours flying about that ‘people are going there, people are doing this.’ The fact that Privilege is coming back online, not this next season I think, but probably the year after, the old Ku Club, which is an amazing venue as well. I just see Ibiza going from strength to strength. I think they’ve got to start being very careful about the kind of prices they’re charging, but then things tend to sort themselves out, when you see a negative effect they tend to readdress them. But I think Ibiza and the Balearics in general are beautiful islands and they’ll keep going from strength to strength, and ideally be looked after much better environmentally as well.

With all the travel troubles of the past three years behind us, the current Mrs Cull and I were excited for our child-free trip to Ibiza as a follow-up to my Celebrity Magazine colleague Donna’s recent article on the fabulous Hotel Leonardo in Port Portals, Mallorca. The Mallorca-based manager, Olga very kindly arranged this trip for us so we could do a feature on one of their Leonardo-branded sister hotels, the NYX in Ibiza.

We set sail on the just-over-two-hour ferry crossing from Palma to Ibiza. Early morning starts aren’t our specialty but with the help of multiple alarms set, we made it to the ferry port in good time for the 8 am sailing.

Travelling light, we disembarked the ferry in Ibiza Town, grabbed a taxi and headed off on the 16-kilometre drive to the NYX Hotel in San Antoni.

Walking through the front doors, you are immediately met with colour, great music and good energy. What a place, full of great vibes and I immediately felt peaceful and energised here. It’s adults only for starters, which was great for us and for those that value some quiet pool time!

For the next couple of days, we were looked after wonderfully by the whole team at NYX. We were staying on the half-board option and the breakfast choice was plentiful, from a full English to a continental, you can help yourself to whatever takes your fancy.

The indoor or al-fresco dining options for the evening offer you dinner overlooking the sea, and again the buffet-style food from the kitchen was excellent. You can then head upstairs to

the Sunset Chill terrace to watch the sun go down with a cocktail while listening to some tunes being played by the live DJ. On one of the nights we were there, we were treated to some live saxophone too which was just epic.

Con todos los problemas para viajar, de los últimos tres años a nuestras espaldas, la actual Sra. Cull y yo, estábamos entusiasmados con nuestro viaje, sin niños, a Ibiza como continuación del reciente artículo de mi colega Donna de Celebrity Magazine sobre el fabuloso Hotel Leonardo en Port Portals, Mallorca. La directora del hotel, Olga, nos organizó amablemente este viaje para que pudiéramos escribir un artículo sobre uno de los hoteles hermanos de Leonardo, el NYX de Ibiza.

Embarcamos en el ferry de Palma a Ibiza, una travesía de poco más de dos horas. Madrugar no es nuestra especialidad, pero con la ayuda de varias alarmas, llegamos al puerto a tiempo para el viaje de las 8 de la

mañana. Viajamos ligeros de equipaje, desembarcamos en la ciudad de Ibiza, cogimos un taxi y recorrimos los 16 kilómetros que nos separaban del hotel NYX de San Antoni.

Al cruzar la puerta de entrada, nos encontramos inmediatamente con color, buena música y buena energía. Qué lugar!!..., lleno de buenas vibraciones y en el que inmediatamente me sentí en paz y con energía. Para empezar, es sólo para adultos, lo que fue genial para nosotros y para aquellos que valoran pasar un rato tranquilo en la piscina.

Durante los dos días siguientes, todo el equipo de NYX nos atendió de maravilla. Nos alojamos en régimen de media pensión y la oferta de desayuno era abundante: desde un desayuno

inglés completo hasta uno continental, puedes servirte lo que más te apetezca. Por la noche se puede cenar en el interior o al aire libre con vistas al mar, y de nuevo la comida de la cocina tipo bufé era excelente. Una de las noches que estuvimos allí, nos deleitaron con un saxofón en directo, lo que fue épico.

The Soller Valley Welcomes You

The Soller Valley is dominated by the Tramuntana mountain range. This is a UNESCO Heritage Site because of the ability of past generations to work with nature. The terracing of the mountains to enable the growth of olives and citrus fruit was one part of this. What we are revered for is the way past generations worked with nature and created water courses from stone, to enable every drop of rain that fell to be used for the land. The water courses still work to this day and the stone walls are worked on by each new generation. The Tramuntana is full of the life’s work of people of the past, which still impresses the engineers of today. The ’Golden Bowl’ is the land which is the valley below the mountains and is centred

in Soller and its villages, Biniaraix and Fornalutx. The mountain walks of this area are famous. Visitors come and walk the walks all year. Route 221 is the route they are following and presents easy walking, plus mighty challenges. Maximum respect for the mountains is required of all who walk our way. Benign and beautiful, but majestic and treacherous if the weather changes and walkers are ill-prepared. The route into the Soller Valley is via the Soller Tunnel or the drive over the Coll Mountain with its 52-hairpin bends. Either route sweeps you into the valley and gives most Soller fans their goosebump moment. Emerging into the mountain landscape is a sight never tired of. One straight road from the tunnel exit and then you are at the sea, as presented to you by the Port of Soller. A perfect horseshoe bay awaits you plus the delights

of beach and sailing life of this corner of the northwest of Mallorca.

This place in Mallorca is a ‘working town’ which becomes a tourist resort in high season. Life goes on year-round as the Port has a commercial fishing fleet and a busy harbour to maintain. Citrus and olive farming in the villages is part of the local income stream. Many families live here, and children go to school in the six schools in the area. Working life happens in the Valley and for those who commute daily to Palma, the industrial estates and other major towns. This is no ‘purpose-built resort’ but a representation of normal life with a desire to share the bounty of the area with visitors and summer friends.

Famous artists have gathered for years in Deia which is another favoured place in our region. Into Soller, and turn left up the

mountain, along the most wonderful coast road and Deia is waiting. It is there with all the delights of a past, present and future as an enclave many want to claim as their own. Richard Branson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Bob Geldof are among those who are associated with the village. Their names are added to every year as a new set of eclectic talents join the party.

The Soller Valley holds tightly onto its traditional past. Ultra-modern in many respects in 2023, but a full calendar of dates for special observation and fiestas. The most famous is that of the battle between the Moors and Christians enacted around May 11th annually. Thousands descend on the Valley, as Sollerics return from other places, to make sure they are home for the occasion. The celebrations of Easter with the solemn processions are very important too. The patron saint of the town is Saint Bartholomew, and he is given a week of fiesta around 24th August each year. The Soller Valley loves a party and commemorates special dates with great enthusiasm. These are all ‘local’ events to which all in town, on the day, are invited.

The Soller Valley is home to many who were introduced to it on a day trip on the famous Soller train. One visit and they knew they had found their heart in the Soller Valley. A train which starts in the streets of Palma, climbs the mountain and descends into the valley below is where their adventure and

dream began.

El aterrazamiento de las montañas para permitir el crecimiento de olivos y cítricos fue una parte de ello. Lo que nos honra es la forma en que las generaciones pasadas trabajaron con la naturaleza y crearon cursos de agua de piedra, para permitir que cada gota de lluvia que caía se utilizara para la tierra. El “Cuenco de Oro” es la tierra que constituye el valle bajo las montañas y se centra en Sóller y sus pueblos, Biniaraix y Fornalutx. Los paseos de montaña de esta zona son famosos. Das Soller-Tal heißt Sie willkommen!

Das Tal von Soller wird von der Serra de Tramuntana beherrscht. Es gehört zum UNESCO-Kulturerbe, weil frühere Generationen es verstanden haben, mit der Natur zu arbeiten. Die Terrassierung der Berge, um den Anbau von Oliven und Zitrusfrüchten zu ermöglichen, war ein Teil davon. Wir werden für die Art und Weise verehrt, wie frühere Generationen mit der Natur arbeiteten und Wasserläufe aus Stein schufen, damit jeder Tropfen Regen, der fiel, für das Land genutzt werden konnte. Die Wasserläufe funktionieren auch heute noch, und die Steinmauern werden von jeder neuen Generation weiter bearbeitet. Die Tramuntana ist voll vom Lebenswerk der Menschen der Vergangenheit, das auch die Ingenieure von heute noch beeindruckt. Die “Goldene Schale” ist das Land, das das Tal unterhalb der Berge bildet und in dessen Zentrum Soller und seine Dörfer Biniaraix und Fornalutx liegen.

Die Bergwanderungen in diesem Gebiet sind berühmt. Das ganze Jahr über kommen Besucher, um diese Wanderungen zu unternehmen. Die Route 221 ist die Route, der sie folgen, und bietet leichte Wanderungen, aber auch gewaltige Herausforderungen. Alle, die auf unserem Weg wandern, müssen höchsten Respekt vor den Bergen haben. Sie sind sanft und schön, aber majestätisch und tückisch, wenn das Wetter umschlägt und die Wanderer schlecht vorbereitet sind. Der Weg ins Soller-Tal führt über den Soller-Tunnel oder die Fahrt über den Coll mit seinen 52 Kehren. Beide Wege führen ins Tal und bescheren den meisten Soller-Fans einen Gänsehautmoment. Das Auftauchen in die Berglandschaft ist ein Anblick, an dem man sich nie satt sehen kann. Von der Tunnelausfahrt geht es nur eine Straße geradeaus, und schon sind Sie am Meer, das sich Ihnen im Hafen von Soller präsentiert. Es erwartet Sie eine perfekte Hufeisenbucht und die Freuden des Strand- und Segellebens in dieser Ecke des Nordwestens von Mallorca.

Dieser Ort auf Mallorca ist eine ‘Arbeiterstadt’, die sich in der Hochsaison in einen Touristenort verwandelt. Berühmte Künstler treffen sich seit Jahren in Deia, einem weiteren beliebten Ort in unserer Region. Fahren Sie nach Soller und biegen Sie links den Berg hinauf, entlang der wunderschönen Küstenstraße, und schon wartet Deia. Deia ist eine Enklave mit einer Vergangenheit,

Das Soller-Tal ist die Heimat vieler Menschen, die es bei einem Tagesausflug mit dem berühmten Soller-Zug kennengelernt haben. Ein einziger Besuch und sie wussten, dass sie ihr Herz im Soller-Tal gefunden hatten. Ein Zug, der in den Straßen von Palma startet, den Berg hinauffährt und in das Tal hinabsteigt, ist der Ort, an dem ihr Abenteuer und ihr Traum begann.

Shapes of Creativity

Palma is blessed with many artsy people and I am thrilled to give you a small insight into a few of them. I am originally from Cambridge, although I have spent a significant portion of my life in Mallorca, Manhattan, and the Caribbean. You could say that the arts are a family thing.

My brother, Steve Bendelack, directed Little Britain, Mr Bean’s Holiday, and The League of Gentlemen, which won him a few BAFTAs. Another brother Peter is also hugely creative, painting on silk and pottery etc... I am an actress and a columnist for a local newspaper. I have written and illustrated children’s books, “Alex the Little Rabbit That Lost His Smile,” (in both Spanish & English) and “A Fizzy Dizzy Adventure.” I also write scripts, storyboards, and documentaries. But my true love is the theatre.

Going back quite a few years I closed my business, and transitioned to the role of stay-at-home mum, I had to do something that worked with my children’s schedules, so theatre came back into my life and swept me off my feet again. When I was a child, I fell in love with the stage and performed the overbearing competitive gum chewer, Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. For fifteen years, I have played several of Shakespeare’s ladies, as well as other classics, such as Jekyll & Hyde, and Frankenstein. I wrote, and directed my first play, “Las Otras Lola’s,” and the show was a success.

This year “2024,” I aspire to establish and operate a captivating play centred around five distinct women, titled White Dust / Polvo Blanco y Ellas. I have crafted it in both Spanish and English. I also completed an eightepisode sitcom in Spanish called ‘The Bendelack Sisters.’ The local TV station Ib3 was interested in it, but they did not have the funds to develop it. I hope

that now that the political situation has changed, there will be more sympathy towards Spanish and English. Here in the Balearic Islands, you can’t see theatre in English or Spanish, which is a shame because there is a foreign population of around “220,000,” without mentioning the Spanish population. This year is going to change.

LEONARDO CONDOR

Let’s catch up with some more artistic people who live here in Palma, who for some strange reason, all end up meeting each other and becoming friends. Leonardo Cóndor is from Ecuador. Leo has lived here in the Balearic Islands for twenty years. His photography is surprisingly sensual, and usually of women moulded in nature or with subtle poses that enhance our feminine curves. Yes, I am in love with his work,

as you may have guessed. His studio is in the heart of Palma on Calle Los Olmos. Leo certainly has a story to tell about his life that he now shares with his beautiful partner, Marika Rauhut, who is Polish and from a different world than Leo in many ways, but they complement each other perfectly - they are soulmates.

He reminded me of his humble beginnings in his country and how he had to work hard to earn money doing odd jobs that came his way, even working as a gardener when he was twelve years old. I asked him what he missed from his country. “Certain foods, and fruits from my country but, l am happily living here in Mallorca. And a dream? “To travel the world for a year, photographing everything, but for now l prefer to build up my profile here in Mallorca.” And what’s next

after Mallorca? “Miami and even New York could be on the cards for this year “2024” to exhibit some of my artwork. ”He is named Condor, which means ruler of the upper world in Andean and is the symbol of power and health. Leo is proud of his Andean race, which gives him the strength to do what he loves: work and express his art in the form of photographs. I will leave you with his book that came out last year, “The Human Body as Artistic Material.”

CARLOS PRIETO

Carlos Prieto opened his two decades as an artist up to the public without any barriers which now incorporates multisensory experiences into his exhibition held in his gallery that is also his home. The exhibition includes changing colours, music, and even diverse aromas. It was a fascinating “Prieto” experience. This artist from Palma comes from a creative background. His father is a well-known journalist, author, and fighter for many lost causes. His mother is also the author of eight books. Carlos has clear ideas, and never entertained the idea of having a plan B to fall back on. He firmly said, “You must trust yourself as an artist and follow your instincts”. What I admire about Carlos is his ability to observe the diverse phases of his life reflected in his artwork, which is consistently captivating, inventive, and fresh.

I first met Carlos while he was doing a live art performance on a huge canvas in front of an audience in a theatre in Palma. I was one of the actresses who was to be part of the performance. I believe it was approximately 18 years ago, thus showing that he was just commencing his journey. Now in 2024 he has grown and tried new things while living between Paris, Rome, and Miami and is now a highly skilled artist. His art gallery is located in the most iconic and authentic part of Palma, the

historic area adjacent to the Cathedral. The sheer feeling of being surrounded by such magnificence that is saturated in hundreds of years of history is joyous. His gallery is very interesting, and it’s full of treasures. He has upcoming projects and considers himself fortunate to have the opportunity to work using his passion. Carlos’s sensitivity and charm are reflected in his works. The film, “D’ amore si vive,” by the Italian director Silvano Agosti, has proved inspirational to Carlos and he says goodbye to us with, D’ amore si vive... this year, featuring diverse productions such as musicals, plays, Russian Ballet, and the splendid Orchestra Sinfonia of the Baleares.

Palma ha sido bendecida con mucha gente artística y estoy encantado de poder darte una pequeña idea de algunos de ellos. Soy originaria de Cambridge, aunque he pasado una parte importante de mi vida en Mallorca, Manhattan y el Caribe. Se podría decir que las artes son cosa de familia. Mi hermano Steve Bendelack dirigió Little Britain, Mr Bean’s Holiday y The League of Gentlemen, por las que ganó algunos premios BAFTA. Otro

hermano, Peter, también es creativo pintando sobre seda y cerámica, etc. Soy actriz y columnista de un periódico local. He escrito e ilustrado libros para niños, “Alex, el conejito que perdió la sonrisa” (tanto en español como en inglés) y “A Fizzy Dizzy Adventure”. También escribo guiones, storyboards y documentales. Pero mi verdadero amor es el teatro. Hace bastantes años, cerré mi negocio y pasé a ser ama de casa. Tenía que hacer algo que funcionara con los horarios de mis hijos, así que el teatro volvió a mi vida y me arrastró nuevamente. Mis hijos aprenderían textos conmigo… Cuando era niña, me enamoré del escenario e interpreté a la dominante y competitiva masticadora de chicle Violet Beauregarde en Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Durante quince años he interpretado a varias de las damas de Shakespeare, así como a otros clásicos, como Jekyll & Hyde, Frankenstein. Escribí y dirigí mi primera obra, “Las Otras Lola’s” el espectáculo fue un éxito. Aquí en Baleares no se puede ver teatro en inglés ni en español, lo cual es una pena porque hay una población extranjera de unos “220.000297,” sin mencionarse los españoles. Este año será distinto.

Su estudio está en pleno centro de Palma en la calle Los Olmos. Leo ciertamente tiene una historia que contar sobre su vida que ahora comparte con su hermosa pareja, Marika Rauhut, que es polaca y de un mundo diferente al de Leo en muchos sentidos, pero complementan perfectamente. Me recordó sus humildes comienzos en su país y cómo tenía que esforzarse para ganar dinero haciendo pequeños trabajos que se le presentaban, incluso trabajó como jardinero cuando tenía doce años. Este artista dijo que extrañaba la comida y las frutas de su país pero que, por lo demás, era feliz viviendo aquí en Mallorca. ¿Cual es tu sueño? Mi sueño es viajar por el mundo durante un año fotografiando todo, pero de momento prefiero quedar en Mallorca. ¿Despues de Mallorca que? Miami e incluso Nueva York podrían estar en las cartas para este año “2024” para exhibir algunas de mis obras de arte. Su nombre Cóndor, que en realidad significa en andino gobernante del mundo superior, y es el símbolo de poder y salud. Leo está

orgulloso de su raza andina, lo que le da fuerza para hacer lo que ama: trabajar y expresar su arte en forma de fotografías. Los dejo con su libro “El cuerpo humano como material artístico”, que salió el año pasado y muestra una colección de sus obras.

Carlos Prieto abre al público sus dos décadas como artista sin barreras incorporando ahora experiencias Multisensoriales a su exposición realizada en su galería que es también su casa, que incluyó colores cambiantes, música y hasta aromas diversos. Fue una fascinante experiencia “Prieto”. Este artista de Palma proviene de una formación creativa. Su padre es un conocido periodista, autor y luchador por muchas causas perdidas. Su madre también es autora de ocho libros. Carlos tiene las ideas claras y nunca se le ocurrió la idea de tener un plan B al que recurrir. Dijo con firmeza: “debes confiar en ti mismo como artista” y seguir tus instintos. Lo que admiro de Carlos es la capacidad de observar las diversas fases de su vida claramente reflejadas en su obra de arte, que es consistentemente cautivadora, inventiva y fresca. Conocí

a Carlos por primera vez mientras hacía una performance de arte en vivo sobre un lienzo enorme frente al público en un teatro de Palma. Yo era una de las actrices que iba a ser parte de la actuación. Creo que fue hace aproximadamente 18 años, lo que indica que apenas estaba iniciando su viaje. Hoy, en 2024, ha crecido y probado cosas nuevas mientras vive en París, Roma y Miami. Ahora es un artista altamente calificado. Su Galería de Arte está situada en la zona auténtica más emblemática de Palma, junto a la Catedral. Por lo tanto, la pura sensación de estar en tal magnificencia, saturada de cientos de años de historia, es gozosa. Su galería es muy interesante y está llena de tesoros. Tiene proyectos próximos y se considera afortunado de tener la oportunidad de trabajar en su pasión.

Este año va a tomar un rumbo diferente, tengo un presentimiento al respecto, quiero que esta isla vanguardista muestre su pluralidad

Quizás represente mi obra en un teatro público, lo que reduciría a la mitad el coste de puesta en escena y producción. tenemos muchas opciones para elegir... Volviendo al teatro, el Auditorium de Palma ofrece una diversa oferta de entretenimiento a lo largo de este año, contando con diversas producciones como musicales, obras de teatro, el Ballet Ruso y la espléndida Orquesta Sinfónica de Baleares.

Aquí hay algunos eventos programados que le abrirán el apetito: Disco Saturday Night y Wolfgang A. Mozart, en febrero. En marzo, la Royal Film Concert Orchestra toca piezas excepcionales de películas que permanecen en tu mente, creadas por Williams, Morricone, Hisaishi o Zimmer, prepárate para la piel de gallina. En abril, Opus One presentará los famosos Tubular Bells de Mike Oldfield, y The Bourbon Street Stompers nos sorprenderá en mayo. El aclamado grupo de pop español Mecano será homenajeado con un concierto homenaje en octubre, titulado Hija de La Luna.

Cada año, Sara Baras interpreta baile flamenco en el Auditorium de Palma. Este espectáculo se llama “Vuela” y

es una visita obligada en noviembre. El Teatro Principal presenta óperas durante todo el año, y es muy recomendable verlas cuando haya disponibilidad de programación. El lujoso Port Adriano, que alguna vez fue un pequeño puerto, es otro destino que ofrece multitud de conciertos durante los meses de verano, trayendo a la isla a músicos de renombre internacional que de otro modo solo se encontrarían en ciudades como Londres o Nueva York. Te sorprenderá el cartel que llegará a la isla en 2024. La Catedral de Palma, también conocida como La Seu, acoge eventos musicales y está repleta de tesoros escondidos que te dejarán asombrado. Sólo he arañado la superficie de la multitud de actividades y lugares para ver, pero rápidamente te darás cuenta de que Mallorca es, sin duda, la isla que nunca duerme. Mi viaje para descubrir Mallorca sigue siendo una montaña rusa de felicidad y espero que tu visita sea tan emocionante como la mía.

The Global Wellness Market

That said, the modern wellness industry is already big business. The wellness economy includes supplements, personal care, nutrition, fitness, mental wellness, complementary medicine, holistic therapies, and wellness travel. Post-pandemic in 2022, the global wellness economy jumped to $5.6 trillion, a 14% increase from 2019.

Wellness tourism ranked fourth as an industry sector, generating $650.7 billion for the global wellness economy (as reported by GWI). In their latest reports (November 2023), GWI projected that wellness tourism will grow at 16.6%, crossing the $1 trillion mark in 2024.

The Spanish Wellness Tourism Market

Like many European markets, Spain’s wellness tourism economy will have felt the negative impact of energy prices and the Ukraine war. Nevertheless, Spain is a top destination choice for wellness-motivated travellers. Spain ranked 11th in the top twenty wellness tourism markets, with a wellness

tourism economy that was valued at $650.7 billion in 2022*(1). Wellness travellers spend 41% more during a stay, especially domestic wellness tourists, who spend 175% more than typical tourists. Wellness travellers tend to have more disposable income and prefer to prioritise their spending on services and amenities that support their health and well-being when they travel. Although final figures are not yet available for 2023, according to the latest tourism data*(2) Spain welcomed 79.9 million overseas visitors in the first eleven months. Not quite back to prepandemic figures, this is a significant increase of 18.2 % in overseas visitors from 2022, an unprecedented increase year on year.

The Balearics: A Wellness Travel Destination

Post-pandemic, the Balearics became Spain’s most successful tourist region in 2022, receiving the highest number of incoming visitors according to the National Institute of Statistics, no doubt boosted by the island’s all-year appeal. There is no doubt the Balearics will remain among the top regions for 2023. Receiving over 17 million tourists by the end of October, the Balearics is the only region in Spain which surpassed pre-pandemic figures with a 1% rise in arrivals from 2019*(3). With the island’s main focus on quality, not quantity, the wellness economy is growing. Spain has been confirmed as a world-class

wellness destination and wellness tourists as big spenders making the future of Mallorca’s travel industry exciting as an appealing all-year-round wellness destination.

Mallorca ticks all the boxes for a wellness holiday. more exposure, especially in the US, with new direct flights from New York (JFK) to Palma. El wellness (bienestar) está en boca de todos hoy en día, pero tal vez no sepas

que el concepto data de las antiguas civilizaciones de Oriente, Grecia y Roma. Un principio centrado en abordajes holísticos y naturales, la autosanación y los cuidados preventivos, que constituye la sólida base del wellness en la actualidad.

Pero, ¿qué significa el wellness en realidad? Se trata de un proceso activo de auto-concienciación, de cambios conductuales positivos y estilos de vida con el objeto de alcanzar una óptima salud física, emocional y espiritual; es decir, ser responsables de todos los aspectos de nuestro bienestar a largo plazo.

Esta moderna acepción del término ‘wellness’ se está convirtiendo en un fenómeno de masas. Según el Global Wellness Institute (GWI), los factores medioambientales, socioeconómicos y de estilo de vida representan entre el 80 y 90% de nuestro riesgo de exposición a enfermedades e impacto sobre la salud. Los factores medioambientales tales como el aire limpio tienen un impacto sobre nuestra salud, mientras que el acceso a la sanidad sigue siendo un privilegio para muchos. Si añadimos a este concepto del wellness los aspectos espiritual y mental, es evidente que existe una multidimensionalidad que hemos de aprender a equilibrar. El Mercado Global del Wellness

No obstante, la industria moderna del wellness está en alza: suplementos alimenticios, cuidado personal, nutrición, fitness, salud mental, medicina alternativa, terapias holísticas y viajes de bienestar. En 2022 tras la pandemia, el sector mundial del wellness ha aumentado hasta $5,6 billones, un incremento del 14%

Como es el caso en muchos mercados europeos, la economía del turismo del bienestar en España se ha visto afectada por la subida de precios de la energía y la guerra en Ucrania. Aun así, España es uno de los destinos preferidos para viajes de bienestar, ocupando el puesto 11 de los 20 destinos más cotizados del turismo de wellness, valorado en $650.7 mil millones en 2022*(1). Los viajeros del ‘wellness’ gastaron un 41% más durante su estancia, especialmente los turistas de wellness nacionales, cuyo gasto es 175% mayor que el de los turistas normales. Los turistas de bienestar suelen disponer de ingresos mayores y priorizan el gasto en servicios que mejoran su salud y bienestar durante el viaje. Aunque las cifras de 2023 no han sido publicadas todavía, los datos más recientes *(2) indican la llegada de 79,9 millones de visitantes del extranjero a España durante los primeros once meses. Pese a que no llega a los niveles de la pre-pandemia, se trata de un incremento del 18,2% en turistas extranjeros comparado con el 2022, un aumento sin precedentes.

Las Baleares: Destino del Turismo de Bienestar

Baleares fue la región turística de mayor éxito en España en 2022, habiendo recibido el mayor número de visitantes según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística, sin duda debido al atractivo de las islas durante todo el año. Está

claro que las islas Baleares continuarán ocupando los primeros puestos en el ranking de 2023. Con la llegada de más de 17 millones de turistas hasta octubre de este año, se trata de la única región de España que ha logrado sobrepasar las cifras pre-pandemia, con un incremento del 1% en la llegadas desde 2019 *(3).

La economía del wellness en Mallorca, donde prima la calidad sobre la cantidad, continúa en auge. El mayor gasto de los turistas del bienestar augura un muy buen futuro para este tipo de turismo en Mallorca como destino de wellness todo el año.

The warm ambience, the famous Guinness sign and some ‘traditional’ pub fare can be found everywhere from Manchester to Mongolia, Italy to even Iraq! Solo travellers have long relied on Irish pubs to meet other people while other travellers flock here for live sports, a taste of home or the ‘craic’. So, it is rather surprising that Andratx has not had its very own watering hole from the Emerald Isle - until now!

Lucky’s Pub & Eatery has opened its doors on a side road just 40 metres from the sea and offers a home-from-home with cold drinks, a relaxed atmosphere and a short and sweet menu of pub-grub-style comfort dishes. Port d’Andratx conjures images of cocktail-swilling tourists admiring the stunning view before meandering along in search of some ‘authentic’ Spanish food but not everybody that visits the Port heads there to see the view. When the sun gets too warm or the cocktails too pricey, a short walk takes you to Lucky’s where the prices are fair, the

food excellent and the welcome as warm as they come.

American-born Jason isn’t the first person that springs to mind when you think Irish Pub - an entrepreneur and engineer that is known more for smart homes and real estate and not so much for pints of Guinness and fish and chips. But, having worked across the road from where Lucky’s is and enjoyed a pint or two after a hard day’s work, his local disappeared when the bar’s previous incarnation closed its doors. So, what do you do when your favourite local closes - buy it!

Not wanting to reinvent the wheel, Jason decided to keep things simple and offer a limited menu made up of excellent food rather than a multi-paged dossier of substandard dishes. Myself and Matthew recently paid a visit and the crunchy chicken wings with Lucky’s seasoning and wing sauce are a particular highlight of the menu if it is a tasty snack you’re looking for. Or for something more hearty, try the fish and chips coated in a delicious Guinness batter with a side of homemade tartar sauce - you will not be disappointed! We also tucked into

a Lucky’s burger (we did share!) which was perfectly cooked and loaded with thick-cut crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce and everything you expect from a towering burger - just keep the napkins handy!

The menu also features steak and Guinness pie, shepherd’s pie available at certain times, and other pub favourites that you would expect. There is also a cocktail menu with a twist - all of your classic cocktails with an Irish slant. Think Mojitos made with Jameson whiskey or perhaps a Bailey’s Piña Colada…

Aside from the food and the ambience, an

Irish Pub would not be complete without some live music and Lucky’s does not disappoint. There will be live music at the weekends with Irish songs taking centre stage on one evening and a little bit of classic rock on the other. There will also be some karaoke in the summer months so you can show off your vocal talents after a few pints. And the sports fans haven’t been forgotten either. Although Lucky’s is definitely not a sports bar, all major games from all major sports can be shown on the screens so just pop in and let Jason know what your sport of choice is and he can find it for you!

“It’s only rock and roll but I like it.”

The Rolling Stones

Celebrity Magazine recently caught up with the Irish artist and musician. Ian ‘Iggi’ McDonald, Iggi arrived in Mallorca in the early 90s with his partner and young daughter, Mimi and like so many of us was just simply seeking ‘a place in the sun’. We were curious about what led him here in the first place.

We start our conversation at the very beginning and I ask Iggi where it all started. He laughs…where shall I begin?

“I grew up in war-torn Belfast in the 70s. And like many Irish people, left Ireland at a young age, seeking fame and fortune for want of a better word. First, I went to California but when my visa ran out, the only option was to cut my hair and join the US Air Force, and that wasn’t going to happen, so my career as a fighter pilot never took off! But as fate would have it and at the invitation of my cousin who worked for Radio One, I returned to London where I quickly immersed myself in the music scene, playing in a band and sharing

a house with some of the roadies from Led Zeppelin. Slowly immersing myself in the vibrant 80s scene, I remember having lots of opportunities, even getting an audition to join the Pretenders…but on the day I didn’t show up. Not a good move! But that’s how it was then. I began working on radio as a DJ and became a presenter for various BBC networks, which ultimately led me back to Ireland to work as a producer for a TV rock music show working with Van Morrison, and Rory Gallagher, some of my childhood heroes.

When my BBC contract ended, I decided It was time to move on again and a friend

suggested Mallorca, so I came and fell in love with the Island. Not really being able to put into practice what I had done before, I woke up one day and said “I’m gonna paint and become an artist”. My uncle was my was my art teacher so I guess it’s kind of in the family. Anyway, everyone laughed and said “ARTISTS DON’T MAKE ANY MONEY” but within a year here I had had three successful exhibitions. Which then brought me into contact with the exiled Australian businessman Christopher Skase. He had spotted one of my paintings in a local gallery in Port Andratx, and subsequently asked me to illustrate his autobiography “Postcard, from Mallorca”. This was his response to the Australian media and authorities, whom he had ignored for his ten years here whilst facing extradition charges for bankruptcy!

Balancing a career now in both art and music I reunited with some of my musical buddies. One of them is fellow Irishman and friend, Gary Moore. the rock and blues guitarist famous for hits like “Still Got the Blues for You” and “The Boys are Back in Town” with Thin Lizzy. I travelled the world with Gary, from Russia to Japan playing at the Olympic stadium in Korea and the Montreux Jazz Festival with artists Billy Idol, and Carlos Santana. We had many plans and new projects to put together until his untimely death in 2011. At this point, I decided to give it a go in Ibiza and quickly got a contract at the Hard Rock Cafe as a solo artist. It was the unplugged era! Moving on, I quickly formed my own band, The Brand New Hippies. We played a lot of the local festivals and we were regular faces at the Las Dalias hippy market where we did the 40th anniversary Woodstock concert and numerous other “flower power” events...at the same time, I was also recording with producers and DJs like DJ Pippi, Pacha and contributing some tracks for the Cafe Del Mar series. A highlight of my time in Ibiza was the Bacardi 123 Rocktronic Festival. Sharing the stage with the likes of Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Elton John and Nile Rodgers from Chic who I had previously met in L.A while working on a new project with some of the Gypsy Kings. Oh, did I forget to tell you that?”

So what about the future?

“As an artist I believe we are constantly searching for a new muse, inspiration and ways to express ourselves so I decided to “return to go” as it were and re-establish myself in Mallorca, hopefully putting some of my life’s experiences into new projects. I am currently working on “The Spirit of Rock”, a musical journey through the last 50 years of rock music in both sound and vision. I fully intend to pick up my paintbrushes again and

won’t just be painting rock ‘n’ roll cars!!

Feel free to contact me if you’d like yours painted though… These days with the digital age and downloads we seem to have lost the connection between art and music. But how many of us remember those classic album covers like Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and The Eagles ‘Hotel California’ when you hear the songs and they instantly pop into your head? I also intend to be getting out there and performing with my new band across the island this summer so I look forward to that. I have spent my time on this earth always with a backdrop to music and art doing what I enjoy doing.. My dad once told me, “Son…life is to be enjoyed ..not endured” Amen to that!!

Regular readers of Celebrity may well remember a couple of articles we ran in 2023 about an American in Mallorca Called Jim Chandler. Towards the end of 2023 Celebrity Magazine Editor, Matthew Cull had chance to catch up with Jim for a chat and a chance to get to know more about one of Mallorca’s more interesting characters.

Tell me, why Mallorca?

“Well, my previous favourite place was Hawaii I had been there over 30 times and lived in Waikiki for a year. It is known for the spirit of aloha. I really feel that Mallorca has a very similar spirit of health and wellbeing.

So, Who is Jim Chandler?

Jim was born to an American soldier part irish who married a Mexican girl out in the west Texas town of El Paso.  His dad was a paratrooper in the Korean War. Known as an army brat, Jim moved often with his parents from Italy to many different U.S States but then attended college in UTEP, (University of Texas at El Paso). He also attended La Universidad Autonama de Guadalajara, California State University Dominguez Hills, and the Adizes Institute. Working for the Department of the Navy for 30 years as

an engineer, Jim traveled to many parts of the world and had assignments in Hawaii, New Mexico and New Jersey. He worked in missile and warfare analysis. But in the last part of his career he was trained and was the Total Quality director for an organization of 1000 engineers and scientists. He trained the people in Dr W. Edwards Deming philosophy to build a high-performance organization for the 21st century.

How did you end up here in Mallorca?

“I am asked sometimes why am I here? Sometimes surprised because I’ve lived in Hawaii, Florida, California, Texas, Italy and in my career I’ve been to the Philippines, Caribbean, Greece and many other places.”

I came here in 2016 for the first time. I was attending some training by Barbara Sher in Frankfurt Germany in 2014. I read a book called Wishcraft in 1985 in Hawaii that changed my life with an exercise called your ideal day. It made a difference in my life from reading her first and five subsequent books three of which were New York Times bestsellers, participating in workshops, I had always wished to meet her. I was retired for many years and I attended a Deming conference in Monterey California when I read in an email that she was going to retire from the public after a final training in Frankfurt Germany. So, I flew there to meet her, I did and I met 50 other coaches from all over the world. I became friends with several, but one special one was Petra Greitschus she and I travelled together to the Grand Canyon, Venice and Hawaii. I wanted to find a place for me so, she brought me to Sant Elm, Majorca and I have continued to live my dream here. During Covid a friend I met at the Dieter Liedtke museum named

Boyan Minev had some time available and I trained him in things I knew including Dale Carnegie how to win Friends and influence people which I was a graduate assistant; Spiral dynamics integral by Dr Don Beck which I was certified as a spiral wizard; Myers Briggs type indicator which with the book please understand me and along with the Deming management methods used in

building a high performance organization I worked with him and consider him a dream Inc coach.

The photo of my first girlfriend and longtime friend Rose who was also a coach and college professor reminds me of the song by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

Finally a person that I owe a bunch of gratitude to here in Mallorca for my better health is my Pilates instructor Resu Ragel. She may very well have saved my life! Additionally, a new Mallorca resident, Amund Johansen, has introduced me to his “Acupuncture by Amund” which has been great for pains I have had. Plus, he made one of my wishes to hike to el trappa come true as you can see in the photo. He also lets me use his office for conversation regarding people’s dreams especially on Sunday afternoon.

In conversation with Clarissa Wellenbrink

The Mallorca-born real estate agent and micro-influencer, known for her work in the tourism industry and promotion of local products, is also the sister of German singer Nico Santos. While music runs in her family, her true passion lies in communication. After graduating in journalism on the island, Wellenbrink now utilizes her Instagram platform with nearly 27,000 followers to share her personal recommendations and experiences living in the Balearics.

Having studied in both Mallorca and Berlin, Wellenbrink expresses a preference for the island due to its lifestyle, career opportunities for Germans, and her affinity for the Spanish culture. HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO HARNESS THE POWER OFFERED BY SOCIAL MEDIA?

As a newcomer to the art world and with a very limited knowledge of social media, I have hired an expert in the field who manages my profile, publishes photos of new works, works in progress and coverage of exhibitions in the right way at the right time for maximum impact. This has definitely broadened the public viewing of my works and has translated into successful sales worldwide.

HOW ELSE HAVE YOU MANAGED TO REACH THE PUBLIC?

I have a selection of works permanently on display on the walls of a local restaurant in the main square of my village, Algaida. This acts like my own personal gallery, where people can view the paintings on site. All diners and customers of the chic Café Can Sant become potential buyers. I have also taken part in a number of collective exhibitions in Palma organised in conjunction with charity events, as well as advertising campaigns in magazines such as CELEBRITY.

ARE YOU COMFORTABLE IN THE ART WORLD?

This is an interesting question. On occasions I have come across the enormous egos of some artists; though their talent is indisputably evident, it is often marred by their overinflated sense of importance. I find this very interesting, since being an artist, in my case, has first and foremost taught me humility: I am in awe of the talent of others and how much I still have to learn, and the fact the someone likes my work and is even prepared to buy it still fills me with delight and gratitude.

Sylvia Baker de Perkal is a fairly new arrival on the art scene but is slowly making her way in the local and international markets alike. The art world is so large, so fraught with different interests and a slave to tastes, trends and demands, that it is overwhelming. But the days of the unknown artist striving for a patron are over: social media offers an unprecedented window to a worldwide audience which, if properly managed, is able to generate interest, a following and, more importantly, sales.

CREATING, DOES THIS MAKE YOU HAPPY?

I feel it is an absolute privilege to be able to have my own space, materials and time to work as an artist. I love the smell of the paints and varnishes, the light in my studio and its peaceful surroundings. When I let myself be ME, casting aside the critical voices of self-doubt, I enter a space where I become bold and daring and creative. I am happy, fulfilled, in the now: it is the ultimate form of mindfulness.

¿DE QUÉ OTRAS MANERAS CONSIGUES QUE SE VEA TU OBRA?

Tengo una selección de mis pinturas expuestas de forma permanente en las paredes de un restaurante en la plaza de mi pueblo, Algaida. Una interesante pregunta. En ocasiones me he topado con el enorme ego de algunos artistas; pese a que su talento es indudablemente evidente, a menudo se ve mermado por un sentido desproporcionado de su propia importancia. Esto me resulta cuando menos curioso dado que, el ser artista me ha enseñado, sobre todo, a ser humilde: tremenda admiración por el trabajo de otros y lo mucho que todavía me queda por aprender; y el hecho de que a alguien le agrade mi obra y desee adquirirla me llena de una inmensa alegría y gratitud.

EN CUANTO AL ACTO DE CREAR, ¿TE HACE FELIZ?

Siento que es un privilegio absoluto disponer de mi propio espacio, materiales y tiempo para trabajar como artista. Adoro el olor a pintura y barnices, la luz de mi estudio y la tranquilidad del entorno. Cuando me permito ser YO MISMA, dejando a un lado las críticas voces que nacen de una falta de seguridad y confianza, entro en un espacio en el que soy audaz, valiente y creativa. Me siento feliz, plena y muy presente: es la quintaesencia del mindfulness.

My name this lifetime is Jamie Brown, and I live with my family here in Mallorca, Spain. Born in New Zealand, I now think I have lived out of New Zealand more than I have lived there! Although I still have very strong connections and have a stronger affinity with the Waitahapeoples of Aotearoa. My Mountain is Taranaki, My River is Waiwhakaiho.

I have taught meditation and mindfulness for many years, and I strongly encourage my clients and friends to add this to their daily routines. There is so much information available on the internet that I don’t think I need to address that topic here.

Needless to say, IT WORKS!

Another thing I believe we need at this time, besides what I have mentioned above, is community and togetherness. Rites and rituals, ceremonies, and initiations play an important role in many cultures and religions around the world. They are used to mark significant life events, transitions, and milestones, and to connect individuals and communities with something greater than themselves.

I lead many of these around the island and they are either on a one-to-one basis or a group event. Rites and rituals provide

a sense of structure and meaning to our lives, helping us to understand the world around us and our place in it. They can also be a source of comfort and support during difficult times.

Welcome to 2024!

If Presidential or General Elections are your thing, then 2024 is the year for you, with over 30 countries in the world going to the polls. The ones that are going to be really interesting are of course Russia in March, where it is certain that more people will vote for Vladimir Putin than vote to like pizza, and the election in the UK which seems to be such a foregone conclusion that even now, every government minister can be safely given the prefix ‘outgoing’ before his title - and of course the United States.

Given that the US is a relatively ‘new world’ country, they have still managed to come up with an electoral system so complicated that few outside the country understand it. However, what is undeniably the case is that it will be a rerun of late 2020; two very old men, one of whom has quietly got on with being

a President and the other a cult leader of right-wing MAGA Republicans, who have effectively hijacked the Grand Old Party as the David Koresh of American politics.

As a nightly news item already, November feels a long time away...

It may also be a re-run of early 2021 if the lingering orange fart doesn’t win again – accusations of a stolen election but maybe even on a larger scale - a good old dust-up of the East and West Coast elites, battling the burger and fried chicken-munching evangelicals in the middle, such is America’s current geopolitical divide within its borders. Where a MAGA victory would leave the US as a player on the world stage is an interesting and worrying prospect. Despite this undeniably dreary thought, there is much to look forward to in 2024 - the Paris Olympics, Euro 2024 and the 37th America’s Cup taking place a short air-bus hop away in Barcelona.

THE AMERICA’S CUP

For those that don’t know, the America’s Cup is a match racing sailing regatta (just one boat against another in a oneon-one duel) that takes place between the existing holder (New Zealand) and whoever is the winning challenger amongst all the competing challenger syndicates - decided through the Louis Vuitton Cup.

It is also the oldest trophy in international sport, dating back to 1851 when the schooner America challenged 15 yachts from the Royal Yacht Squadron for a race around the Isle of Wight - and whipped them all, taking the 100 Guinea Cup as it was then known, back to the New York Yacht Club on 44th Street, Manhattan, where it remained bolted to a plinth for 132 years.

The Australians were the first country outside America to win it again, back in 1983 - since then the Swiss and the Kiwis have also won it - the current

holders. Held every three to four years, most people regard the 1920s and 30s as the Cup’s heyday, when various industrial barons of the age - Liptons, Sopwiths, Vanderbilts etc - competed in the magnificent J-Class yachts, of which, having disappeared almost completely, there are now no less than nine on the water - three restored originals and six reproductions of boats that were either designed at the time but never built, or were scrapped during the austerity during and after WW2.

I was lucky enough to sail on one of these - a reproduction of the 1937 Cupwinning Ranger, during the 2022 Palma Superyacht Regatta - a lifelong ambition fulfilled. The original Ranger was one of those scrapped during WW2, her 137ft steel hull perhaps melted down as bullets or tanks for Omaha Beach... It’s a romantic idea. Nonetheless, she was the last ‘J’ to compete in the America’s Cup before economics drove the event towards smaller yachts.

The latest design for the class is the AC75 in which this year’s Cup will be contested - crazy hydro foiling monohulls capable of bursts of over 50 knots or nearly 100km/h. Otherwise, competing in the Cup remains the money pit of old and the domain of the super-rich, with up to $300m spent on a well-funded campaign.

It will be a spectacular event this year, right on our doorstep, starting in late August with the final race between New Zealand and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup (denoting the Challenger) from the 12-27th of October, with a host of other racing built around the main event, including for the first time,

an America’s Cup competition for women and youth in the AC40 class. Full details: www.americascup.com.

Events to look out for in early 2024…

Mallorca Rally Clasico (7th to 9th March)

This is the 20th year of the Rally Classico Mallorca - a three-day closedroad special-stage rally, hosted out of Puerto Portals - and is seen as one of the best European events of its kind on the world-class driving roads that Mallorca offers.

I have competed in this event three times so far as a co-driver, most recently in 2022 when sadly we crashed in a cute little super-charged Lotus Elise still to be repaired. The fun starts on Thursday evening (7th March) when the cars line up on the starting ramp and disappear into the dark for the two-night stages, the remaining 11 or so stages taking place all over the island over the ensuing two days.

This event attracts around 100 entries from all over Europe - particularly Germany - with the dominant car being raucous rally-prepped Porsche 911s but with a fantastic eclectic mix of everything from the Group B rally monsters of the 1980s to a show class division of classic and high-performance and more modern machinery. For those petrolheads amongst us, a Thursday afternoon stroll around the open-toeveryone Parc Ferme at Puerto Portals is well worth a visit!

The Palma International Boat Show (25th - 28th April)

The Palma International Boat Show is now recognised as one of the world’s premier boat shows, which kicks off the Mediterranean summer season with more glitz and glamour year after year. Hosted primarily around Moll Vell directly in front of the cathedral, it is a chance to empty your wallet - or perhaps your bank account - amongst the nearly 300 exhibitors tempting you with their latest innovations and fare. It also acts as one of the most important Superyacht brokerage and charter shows worldwide, with some of the finest 24m+ yachts on the market, beautifully displayed between the backdrop of the old town and a glittering Mediterranean.

Mallorca 6Points (17th—19th May)

The penultimate weekend of May sees the 8th edition of the Reverence Hotels 6points Mallorca - a three-day charity cycle ride, superbly supported by Calvia council, visiting all the most extreme compass points of the island as well as the highest and lowest points accessible by road - Puig Major and anywhere by the sea respectively!

Founded in 2017 by local expat Bryan Visser, what initially started with a handful of riders to raise a bit of money for various local charities has grown year after year, with the 2023 entry being the biggest yet at 89 participants with many in the yachting sector taking part.

in the form of Reverence Hotels of Santa Ponsa, securing this entirely self-funding event that has, since its inception, been driven by making it the best rider experience possible. And it shows - with superb organisation attracting a bigger field every year, not least due to the inclusivity of the event and the accommodation of variations in ability and fitness.

With the field divided into two main groups of Muntanas and Vallees, one doing the entire Tramuntana on the first day and the other the lower route, a further subdivision by ability means that if you can ride a bike at a decent-ish pace for three days, there is a place on this event for you. For the truly nuts, this year will again include an ‘Everesting’ group – a longer route again, matching the Everest vertical with 8850m of climbing. All the groups will have

their own support vehicles, manned by around 30 cheerful volunteers, dishing out refreshments and mechanical support - with mercifully, no first aid required…

With lavish meals at each evening’s hotel stopover and all luggage transported between the hotels – always impeccably organised by Ticket Travel of Portals Nous, the camaraderie that builds within each individual group and the event overall is what makes this ride what it is - everyone becoming a big family by the time they cross the finish line on the final day. The grand finale arrival will again be beautifully hosted by the Vino Del Mar restaurant within Port Adriano, the port itself has lent great support in hosting the start and finish for the fourth year running. The 2023 ride raised over €50,000 for various local charities - Asdica, Yachting

Gives Back (Shambala Foundation) and SOS Animal - a Calvia-based animal rescue centre. Since its first event, 6Points has now raised no less than €210,000 for various charities- much of this coming from overseas riders, aware of Mallorca’s status as one of the best cycling locations anywhere on the planet. There are many ways to access road cycling in Mallorca, but none that has focused on the rider experience to anything like the scale of 6Points Challenge, is as much fun to do or covers the whole island. It will unquestionably be a sell-out again this year – although a few spaces still remain!

¡Bienvenidos a 2024!

Si lo que te va son las elecciones generales o presidenciales, el 2024 es tu año, en el que más de 30 países del mundo votarán por sus líderes. Las más interesantes serán, por supuesto, las de Rusia en marzo, en la que se da por descontado que más personas votarán por Vladimir Putin que por la pizza, y las elecciones en Gran Bretaña, que augura un resultado tan claro que desde ya mismo cualquier ministro puede describirse como ‘saliente’; y, naturalmente, las elecciones presidenciales de EEUU.

Dado que EEUU es un país relativamente considerado del ‘nuevo mundo’, se las han ingeniado para

diseñar un sistema electoral tan complicado que pocos fuera del país lo logramos comprender. No obstante, lo que sí queda claro es que se tratará de una nueva versión de finales de 2020: dos hombres muy mayores, uno de los cuales se ha dedicado a su labor de presidente mientras que el otro se ha convertido en líder de culto de los republicanos MAGA [Make America Great Again] de derechas, quienes prácticamente han tomado las riendas del partido republicano, como el David Koresh de la política americana.

A pesar de su presencia diaria en las noticias, noviembre parece tan lejano todavía…. Podría además convertirse en una repetición de principios de 2021 si este payaso de pelo naranja no gana de

nuevo – las acusaciones de una victoria robada a mayor escala si cabe – y el sempiterno conflicto entre las élites de las costas este y oeste disputándose a las masas evangélicas alimentadas de hamburguesa y pollo frito del centro del país: éste es el panorama geopolítico de la América actual. Un panorama en el que una victoria MAGA en un país líder en el mundo se antoja muy preocupante.

Pese a esta desalentadora posibilidad, pasarán otras muchas cosas ilusionantes en 2024: las Olimpiadas de París, Euro 2024 y la 37º edición de la Copa América, a un salto en Barcelona.

(un barco contra otro en un duelo por la victoria) que tiene lugar entre el ganador actual (Nueva Zelanda) y el que se haya declarado contrincante en las otras carreras, culminando con la Copa Louis Vuitton.

Se trata asimismo del trofeo más antiguo del mundo de la vela, que data de 1851 cuando la goleta América se enfrentó a 15 barcos del Royal Yacht Squadron en una carrera alrededor de Wight – habiéndoles ganado a todos y llevándose la copa 100 Guinea, como se la conocía por aquellos tiempos, al New York Yacht Club en la calle 44 de Manhattan, donde la anclaron a un pedestal durante 132 años.

Los australianos fueron el primer país fuera de EEUU que la ganó en 1983 –desde entonces también la han ganado los suizos y los neozelandeses (los campeones actuales).

Se organiza cada tres o cuatro años. Muchos piensan que su época dorada tuvo lugar en los años 1920-30, cuando varios magnates industriales de entonces - Liptons, Sopwiths, Vanderbilts etc –competían en los magníficos veleros de Clase-J, de los que quedan tan solo nueve en el agua: tres originales restaurados y seis reproducciones de barcos que fueron diseñados en aquella época pero no llegaron a construirse o fueron desguazados durante y después de la segunda guerra mundial. Yo he tenido la fortuna de navegar en uno de ellos – una reproducción del Ranger ganador de la copa en 1937durante la Superyacht Cup Palma en 2022, cumpliendo así un sueño de toda la vida. El Ranger original fue uno de los barcos que durante la guerra fueron al desguace, donde su casco de acero de 137 pies de eslora se transformó en

balas o tanques a emplear en la playa de Omaha… una romántica idea. No obstante, fue el último velero de clase J en competir en la Copa América antes de que la economía hizo que el evento se centrara en barcos de menores dimensiones.

El último diseño de la clase es el AC75, a estrenar en la Copa América de este año: se trata de un veloz monocasco con aerodeslizadores capaz de alcanzar una velocidad superior a los 50 nudos o casi 100km/hora. Competir en la Copa América es privilegio exclusivo de los muy pudientes, necesitándose una inversión de hasta 300 millones de dólares para una buena campaña. Un evento espectacular este año, a apenas un salto desde Mallorca, que comienza a finales de agosto y culmina con la carrera final entre Nueva Zelanda y el ganador de la Copa Louis Vuitton

Eventos interesantes a principios de 2024…

Rally Clásico Isla Mallorca (7 – 9 marzo)

Se trata de la vigésima edición del Rally Clásico – un rally de 3 días en carretera cerrada – que arranca desde Puerto Portals – considerado uno de los más importantes eventos europeos de este tipo en las magníficas carreteras de Mallorca.

He competido tres veces hasta la fecha en este evento como copiloto;

la última vez fue en 2022 cuando desgraciadamente tuvimos un accidente en un potente Lotus Elise todavía en el taller de reparación. La diversión empieza el jueves 7 de marzo por la tarde, cuando los coches se enfilan en la rampa y desaparecen en la oscuridad para recorrer las dos etapas nocturnas; las restantes 11 etapas tienen lugar por toda la isla a lo largo de los dos días siguientes.

El evento cuenta con participantes de toda Europa (sobre todo de Alemania), donde los Porsches 911 son protagonistas, aunque hay también una ecléctica mezcla de todo tipo de vehículos, desde los monstruos de los rallys del Grupo B de los años 80 hasta un segmento para coches clásicos y de alto rendimiento y motores modernos.

El Palma International Boat Show (25 – 28 abril)

El Palma International Boat Show está reconocido como una de las ferias náuticas más importantes del mundo, que inaugura la temporada estival mediterránea con cada vez más estilo y glamur.

El 6Points Challenge Mallorca (17—19 mayo)

Durante el penúltimo fin de semana

de mayo tendrá lugar la 8ª edición de la ruta Reverence Hotels 6 Points Mallorca – una ruta ciclista con fines benéficos de tres días con el apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Calvia, que recorre los puntos más elevados y más bajos de toda la isla accesibles por carretera: desde el Puig Major hasta la costa. Fundado en 2017 por el extranjero residente en la isla Bryan Visser, lo que en un principio fue un reducido grupo de ciclistas que buscaban recaudar fondos para varias organizaciones benéficas ha ido creciendo hasta los 89 participantes que hubo en 2023, entre

ellos muchos provenientes del sector de la náutica.

Con el patrocinio en 2020 de Reverence Hotels of Santa Ponsa, este evento actualmente constituye una de las mejores experiencias ciclistas. Una excelente organización que cada año atrae a más participantes, sin duda debido en gran parte a su carácter inclusivo, ya que puede abarcar a todo tipo de niveles de habilidad y forma física de los participantes. El recorrido se divide entre Montañas y Valles: uno es el recorrido de toda la sierra de la Tramuntana el primer día y

el otro corresponde a la ruta más baja. Luego se clasifica en existe una clase en función de habilidad, para la que basta ser capaz de montar en bicicleta a una velocidad normal durante tres días. Para los ciclistas dedicados se incluirá este año de nuevo el grupo ‘Everesting’, que consiste en una subida casi en vertical de 8850 m. Todos los grupos contarán con sus vehículos de soporte a cargo de unos 30 alegres voluntarios, que suministrarán refrescos y asistencia mecánica así como primeros auxilios, lo cual no hará falta si todo va bien. Copiosas cenas cada noche en un hotel, el equipaje transportado entre hoteles (gracias a la impecable labor de Ticket Travel en Portals Nous), alimentan

el espíritu de equipo entre todos los grupos, bien compenetrados como una gran familia hasta cruzar la línea de meta el último día. Allí los participantes son agasajados con una exquisita cena ofrecida por el restaurante Vino Del Mar situado en Port Adriano, junto al gran apoyo prestado por este último tanto en la salida como en la llegada durante los últimos cuatro años.

La ruta de 2023 recaudó más de 50.000 euros para varias organizaciones benéficas locales - Asdica, Yachting Gives Back (Shambala Foundation) y SOS Animal – un refugio de animales en Calvià. Desde la primera edición, 6Points ha conseguido recaudar unos 210.000 euros, muchos aportados por

ciclistas extranjeros ávidos de recorrer las carreteras de Mallorca, considerada como uno de los mejores destinos de ciclismo a nivel mundial.

Hay muchas formas de hacer ciclismo en carretera en Mallorca, pero ninguna es comparable a la 6Points Challenge, ni tan divertida o que recorra la isla entera. Sin duda estará al completo de nuevo este año- ¡aunque todavía queda alguna plaza!

De entre sus prioridades caben destacar la localización de viviendas en zonas del alto nivel, con acabados de máxima calidad, donde poder disfrutar del buen clima gran parte del año y compaginarlo con sus obligaciones profesionales, siempre que la distancia lo permita, precisando para ello contar con la tecnología de vanguardia e innovadora que haga innecesario el desplazamiento a su centro de trabajo.

El mercado de viviendas de lujo ha experimentado un crecimiento

en cuanto a operaciones, pero también en el precio, que se ha visto incrementado en los últimos años sin previsión de moderación a corto plazo. Baleares lidera el mercado español de viviendas de lujo, siendo municipios de referencia a nivel internacional los de Calvià, Andratx, Palma, Sant Joan de Labritja, Ibiza y Santa Eulària del Riu, entre otros. Por zonas, cabe destacar urbanizaciones como la de Portals Nous, Bendinat, Costa d’en Blanes, Camp de Mar, Puerto de Andratx, Son Vida, Santa Agnès, Roca Llisa, etc. La mayoría de ellas se hallan en enclaves residenciales de alto standing y comparten la proximidad a puertos deportivos, campos de golf y buenas conexiones con la ciudad y sus principales infraestructuras

(aeropuertos, centros comerciales, centros de ocio y culturales, etc.). Ni que decir tiene que todas ellas comparten un valor /m2 muy superior a la media del mercado inmobiliario nacional, que convierte a estas propiedades en exclusivas para gente exclusiva. Aun cuando este segmento del mercado inmobiliario se ve menos afectado por la situación económica nacional e internacional, lo cierto es que la elevada inflación, el aumento de costes, los conflictos bélicos, crisis sanitarias, energéticas y demás no han pasado desapercibidos. En mayor o menor medida, han afectado al coste de compra y/o reforma de propiedades de alto nivel, aunque, por el momento, la inestabilidad no tiene efectos

Evidentemente, el incremento del coste de la energía, combustibles y materiales han supuesto una subida en los costes de la construcción y/o reforma de viviendas que afecta al precio final de la vivienda u obra. La vivienda de lujo, contrariamente a lo que ocurre con la vivienda estándar, absorbe ese incremento en el precio final sin que, hasta la fecha, haga que los posibles compradores frenen su intención de adquirir este tipo de propiedades.

En definitiva, contamos con un sector inmobiliario de viviendas de alto standing con una oferta y demanda en términos más que aceptables que no hacen peligrar la tendencia al alza de estas operaciones inmobiliarias. Lamentablemente, no podemos decir lo mismo en el resto de los segmentos del mercado, pues cada vez es más complicado acceder a una propiedad en las islas en óptimas condiciones de precio y financiación. La dualidad de nuestro mercado inmobiliario permite que una parte de este siga con rumbo fijo y a buen ritmo, sin que las circunstancias actuales le afecten, circunstancias que la otra parte padece. Ello obliga a adoptar medidas para que el mercado

inmobiliario en su conjunto avance de forma proporcionada en beneficio de todos.

However, the luxury home segment, which in the Balearics accounts for a significant share of the national market, appears to be impervious to this situation. According to newspaper Cincodías, the Balearics rank second in purchase and sale transactions of luxury homes, increasing from 1600 transactions in 2021 to 2300 in 2022.

The touristic appeal of our islands undoubtedly encourages purchasers to invest in property in the most emblematic areas. The number of buyers in pursuit of a second home to enjoy our excellent climate is on the rise.

Until recently, most buyers hailed from Germany and the UK, but circumstances have altered this trend, now extending to people from Russia, France and the Scandinavian countries. The luxury home market seems to remain unaffected by the economic and financial difficulties that are faced by most homebuyers, both in Spain and throughout Europe. We are evidently referring to people with high purchasing power who are hardly affected by the crisis and who have no qualms in paying exorbitant amounts of money to acquire an exclusive property in the

Balearics. Their priorities include location in highly sought-after areas and high-spec construction, to enable them to enjoy our good year-round weather while working remotely –distance permittingtherefore also requiring innovative and cutting edge technology and communications.

The luxury home market has risen in number of transactions but also in terms of price, which has increased in recent years and not expected to stabilise any time soon. The Balearic Islands are at the forefront of the Spanish luxury property market, with the municipalities of Calviá, Andratx, Palma, Sant Joan de Labritja, Ibiza and Santa Eulària del Riu being amongst the most popular. As for areas, the most sought-after are Portals Nous, Bendinat, Costa d’en Blanes, Camp de Mar, Port of Andratx, Son Vida, Santa Agnès and Roca Llisa. Most of them are high standard residential areas close to yacht clubs, golf courses and well-connected with the city and main infrastructures (airport, shopping areas, leisure and cultural amenities, etc.). The price per square metre of such properties is well above the national average, making them exclusive homes for exclusive people.

is less affected by the national and international economic situation, the truth is that high inflation, the increase in costs, the international conflicts, healthcare and energy crises have not remained unnoticed.

To a greater or lesser extent, these factors have affected the cost of purchase and/or refurbishment of high standard properties although, for the time being, this instability does not appear to have a direct or severe impact on this market segment, so much more resistant to these situations. The increase in the

price of energy, fuel and materials has evidently led to a rise in the cost of building and /or reform of properties, impacting the end cost of the home or project. The luxury home market, unlike that of standard homes, appears to absorb this rise in the final price and, to date, has not dampened the keenness of the buyers for such properties.

In short, the very healthy supply and demand levels in our luxury home market appear not to be putting the rising number of such transactions at risk. Unfortunately,

the same cannot be said about the rest of market segments, where access to a home in the Balearics at an acceptable price and financing conditions is becoming increasingly difficult. The duality of our real estate market means that one segment is able to exhibit steady growth unaffected by the circumstances that so encumber the rest of the market. This imbalance calls for measures to enable the property market as a whole to advance in a more equitable manner to the benefit of all.

In times of ultra-fast fashion, fast food and fast furnishings from Sweden, we long for quality, functionality and, above all, timelessness. As in fashion, there are unbeatable classics that do not lose their value, on the contrary –they increase in value, such as watches like Rolex or sought-after bags from Hermes.

Let’s start with the journey through time of the furniture classics that are still valid today and have withstood the test of time. One of the most recognised objects of the last century, and an icon of the modern movement, the Barcelona Chair exudes a simple elegance that epitomises Mies van der Rohe’s most famous maxim – “less is more.”

The Egg-chair by Arne Jacobsen is a masterpiece of Danish design. Jacobsen found the perfect shape for the chair by experimenting with wire and plaster in his garage. Today, the Egg chair is recognised worldwide as one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s legendary career and a Scandinavian design icon.

The Wassily armchair, designed in 1925 by designer icon Marcel Breuer, with its tubular steel design, represents the successful beginning of the Bauhaus era.

The Panton Chair by Verner Panton was a real revolution in 1959, as it was the first plastic cantilever chair that could be made from a single piece. Thanks to new materials and manufacturing methods that Panton researched and

repeatedly exploited in his works, a completely new design language emerged, which has an almost sculptural effect on the Panton Chair.

With the Vitra Lounge Chair & Ottoman, Charles & Ray Eames have given the classic club chair a contemporary, sophisticated look. The 1957 design won the Triennale Prize in Milan soon after it was created.

The Artemide Tolomeo Mega Terra by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina is one of the most famous lighting designs of the 20th century and its height, together with the graceful design, fits elegantly into various room concepts. With its impressive size, the Tolomeo floor lamp Mega Terra offers adequate illumination for large rooms and impresses with its proven design.

The horn-shaped Ara table lamp was designed by Philippe Starck for Flos in 1988. It was named after his daughter. This classic Starck design incorporates bold sweeping lines that give it a highly distinctive sculptural presence. The on/off switch is playfully contained in the head, which also rotates to direct lighting.

The Orbital floor lamp from Ferruccio Laviani is a unique project in the history of design, entailing a composition of white or multi-coloured outlines that diffuse an unmistakable graphic and luminous sign through space.

The ergonomically shaped Tokyo-Pop lounger, designed by designer Tokujin Yoshioka for Driade, is a particularly exotic piece of furniture. Their organic, flowing shapes are reminiscent of the silhouette of an oversized gravy boat. The invitingly shaped lounger sculpture consists of a monoblock made of polyethylene.

Ray and Charles Eames’ La Chaise is a sculptural classic. The well-known designer couple was inspired by the Floating Figure sculpture by sculptor Gaston Lachaise. The La Chaise lounger can now be safely described as an icon of organic design. And last but not least, an iconic piece from Ron Arad - the Victoria and Albert sofa. Derived from a “doughnut”, a squiggle that becomes the idea of a sculpture: flattened, reshaped, an ironic view that goes beyond the traditional concept of industrial design. Then the object: on an internal structure made of fiberglass, upholstery and custom-

made clothing reveals the coincidence of technical value and creative expression. The Saarinen dining table comes from the famous series called Tulip, created by the Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961). The Saarinen Tulip dining table shows the perfect beauty of constructive reduction and is an irrefutable classic of modern furniture design. The large piece of furniture is characterised by a large base and a cupshaped table leg on which a circular plate rests. The table leg gave the product series from which this table comes the name, Tulip - because the shape is reminiscent of an upside-down tulip. The table’s creator, Eero Saarinen, is considered one of the most famous architecture and design icons of the last century.

The coffee table from Isamu Noguchi came onto the market in 1948 and has long been considered one of the most sought-after pieces of furniture for the stylish and modern living room. The American designer with Japanese roots managed to create a perfect combination of form and function with his basic idea. Finally, the lines of the coffee table resemble those of an abstract

sculpture. In fashion it’s called upcyclingin interior design, it’s a complement - you upgrade your home with some classics and, above all, you can enjoy them for the rest of your life and for generations to come. The design back then was made to last and was not designed for today’s throwaway society. But we are on the right track to focus on consistency and value again, as the current trends show, whether old-money style in fashion or simplicity in the home.

Der Saarinen Esstisch stammt aus der berühmten Serie Tulip, die der finnischamerikanische Architekt und Designer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) geschaffen hat. Der Saarinen Tulip Esstisch zeigt die perfekte Schönheit   und ist ein unwiderlegbarer Klassiker des modernen Möbeldesigns. Das große Möbelstück zeichnet sich durch einen großen Sockel und ein tassenförmiges Tischbein aus, auf dem eine kreisförmige Platte aufliegt. Das Tischbein gab der Produktreihe, aus der dieser Tisch stammt den Namen Tulpe - denn die Form erinnert an eine kopfüber liegende Tulpe. Der Schöpfer des Tisches, Eero Saarinen, gilt als eine der berühmtesten Architektur-und Design-Ikonen des letzten Jahrhunderts. Der Couchtisch von Isamu Noguchi kam 1948 auf den Markt und gilt seit langem als eines der begehrtesten Möbelstücke für das stilvolle und moderne Wohnzimmer. Der amerikanische Designer mit japanischen Wurzeln schaffte es, eine perfekte Kombination aus Form und Funktion mit seiner Grundidee zu schaffen. Schließlich ähneln die Linien des Couchtisches denen einer abstrakten Skulptur.

In der Mode heißt es Upcycling - im Interior Design ist es eine Ergänzung - Sie aktualisieren Ihr Zuhause mit  Klassikern und vor allem können Sie diese ein Leben lang geniessen. Das Design  von damals wurde konzipiert fuer Langlebigkeit und Zeitlosigkeit. Aber wir sind auf dem richtigen Weg, um uns wieder auf Werte zu konzentrieren, wie die aktuellen Trends zeigen, ob Old-Money-Stil in der Mode oder die Simplicity in der Einrichtung.

Creando hogar con iconos atemporales Brad…

En unos tiempos de modas ultra-transitorias, comida rápida y mobiliario ‘fast’ de Suecia, añoramos la calidad, la funcionalidad y, sobre todo, la atemporalidad. Como sucede en la moda, existen clásicos de toda la vida que no pierden su valor; al contrario, se revalorizan, como es el caso de los relojes Rolex o los cotizados bolsos de Hermès. Empecemos con un viaje en tiempo partiendo de los clásicos que todavía

conservan su valor. Uno de los objetos más reconocidos del siglo pasado e icono del mobiliario moderno, es la Silla Barcelona cuya sencilla elegancia condensa la reputada máxima de Mies van der Rohe – “menos es más.”

El Sillón-Huevo de Arne Jacobsen es un gran exponente del diseño danés. Jacobsen dio con la forma perfecta del sillón experimentando con alambre y yeso en su garaje. Hoy en día el Sillón Juego es reconocido a nivel mundial como uno de los mayores éxitos de la legendaria trayectoria de Jacobsen y un icono del diseño escandinavo.

Con el sillón y otomana Vitra, Charles y Ray Eames le dieron al clásico sillón club un aire contemporáneo y sofisticado. El diseño de 1957 ganó el Premio Triennale en Mián al poco tiempo de su creación.

La lámpara de mesa en forma de cuerno

creada por Philippe Starck para Flos en 1988 se llama Ara, como su hija. Este clásico diseño de Starck de audaces líneas lo dota de un claro aspecto escultural. El interruptor de encendido y apagado está en la pantalla, que además puede rotarse para poder direccionar la iluminación.

La forma ergonómica del sillón TokyoPop, diseñado por Tokujin Yoshioka para Driade, es un mueble particularmente exótico. Sus contornos orgánicos y fluidos recuerdan a la silueta de una salsera. Este escultural sillón tan apetecible es una única pieza de polietileno.

La Chaise, de Ray y Charles Eames es un escultural clásico. Esta conocida pareja de diseñadores se inspiró en la escultura La Figura Flotante, de Gaston Lachaise. Sin lugar a dudas, el sillón La Chaise es un icono del diseño orgánico.

Y por último, pero no por ello menos

importante, una reconocida pieza de Ron Nace de un donut que se convierte en una escultura: aplanado, reformado, una interpretación irónica que va más allá del concepto tradicional del diseño industrial. Y luego está el objeto: estructura de fibra de vidrio, con tapizado a medida donde se fusionan el valor técnico y la expresión creativa.

La mesa de comedor de Saarinen pertenece a la famosa serie llamada Tulip, creada por el arquitecto y diseñador fines-americano Eero Saarinen (1910-1961). Esta mesa muestra la belleza perfecta de la reducción constructiva y es un clásico irrefutable del diseño moderno de mobiliario. La mesa Tulip Saarinen posee una enorme base y una pata circular en forma de copa sobre la que se coloca la tabla redonda. La forma de la pata le dio nombre a la serie- Tulip- en vista de su parecido a un tulipán invertido. Su creador, Eero Saarinen, está considerado como uno de los iconos de la arquitectura y el diseño más importantes del siglo pasado. La mesa de café de Isamu Noguchi fue lanzada al mercado en 1948 y desde entonces es una de las piezas de mobiliario más cotizadas para los salones de estilo moderno. El diseñador Americano de raíces japonesas ha logrado crear la perfecta fusión de forma y función con su concepto básico, con líneas que evocan una escultura abstracta.

En la moda se denomina ‘upcycling’ – en diseño de interiores es un complemento: ensalzas tu hogar con piezas clásicas que podrás disfrutar el resto de tu vida así como para el disfrute de las generaciones futuras. 20 years on! Celebrity Magazine and Clinica Veterinaria Bendinat…how time flies!

I have been asked to write an article for Celebrity’s 20-year anniversary. Where do I start? I fondly remember the founders; Ken and Angie doing the rounds to meet the rich and famous people who frequented this beautiful island.

I had no idea how varied and picturesque this island was until I met a beautiful Mallorcan girl, in of all places, sunny Salisbury in the UK. I had been working there for five years and was about to become a partner in a large veterinary practice. Who would have guessed how my life would change when 24 years ago she walked into a pub in the centre of the town. Because of her, I left everything in the UK. Literally everything; I came here with three suitcases. Now

I have three wonderful children….. well if you can call teenagers that! My profession is very universal: I can work in most places in the world, but the language was a barrier for me to get into veterinary work here, so I spent six months studying Spanish and eventually got a job as a locum in the village of Esporles, deep in the mountains. Maria, the owner was on maternity leave and I was able to help out. In the first few weeks, before the birth, she sat in on the consults and helped me with the Spanish veterinary terms; “My dog is licking his bottom a lot’’ doesn`t tend to come up in normal conversation very much!

I then got a permanent job with Daniel and Pilar in Arenal. But after

a year with them, I decided to launch my own clinic: Clinica Veterinaria Bendinat in 2003, hence we too have celebrated 20 years of pet care. I did a lot of research and found a great location on the Bendinat roundabout which is accessible and easy to find for clients from all over the island. I think I chose it well as the Plaza Bendinat has the added advantage of free underground parking. Palma has the highest density of population but finding places and then parking is almost impossible. Stressed owners with sick animals can park easily when coming to our clinic. From the start, we have been very busy.

We wanted to take veterinary care and treatment to another level; client

care and love for the animals have always been the number one aim. We were the first clinic to have a website which was pretty basic but it started a trend. We always asked clients to make an appointment; saving time for them and allowing us to be more efficient. However, emergencies are received immediately.

Being the ONLY English vet made us attract clients from all over the island. However, we became so busy that after only a year we took on Cristina, a vet from Madrid. She is well-liked and known for her skill and knowledge, especially to our cat clients. Antonio, our newest recruit is also very talented and has been with us for two or three years. Marina is our nurse and she is one of a very small, select group of nurses who have a properly recognised veterinary nursing qualification. She has been caring for the pets who are hospitalised, or in for operations, for the last 15-16 years. Thanks to her care and dedication, dogs and cats never have fear of coming back to the clinic after major surgery. We are all organised and helped by Mari, the practice manager, who was with me for the first 5-6 years of the clinic, before leaving to bring up her family. She has been back with us for the last 4-5 years. That just leaves Alba, who runs the reception and has the job of welcoming our clients and giving treats to their pets. We have had more than our fair share of “celebrities” through the clinic. “Rafa Nadal’’ comes to the clinic every day (see the photo - he is my Staffie!) But the REAL STARS are the dogs and cats who come to see us. We wish Celebrity another 20 years of success!

Me han pedido que escriba un artículo para el 20 aniversario de Celebrity. ¿Por dónde empiezo? Recuerdo con cariño a los fundadores, Ken y Angie haciendo las rondas para conocer a los ricos y famosos que frecuentaban esta hermosa isla.

No tenía ni idea de lo variada y pintoresca que era esta isla hasta que conocí a una hermosa mallorquina, precisamente en el soleado Salisbury, en el Reino Unido. Llevaba cinco años trabajando allí y estaba a punto de convertirme en socio de una gran clínica veterinaria. Quién me iba a decir que mi vida cambiaría cuando, hace 24 años, ella entró en un pub del centro de la ciudad. Por ella lo dejé

todo en el Reino Unido. Literalmente todo; vine aquí con tres maletas. Ahora tengo tres hijos maravillosos: .....well, ¡si se puede llamar así a los adolescentes!

Mi profesión es muy universal: puedo trabajar en la mayoría de los lugares del mundo, pero el idioma era una barrera para acceder al trabajo veterinario aquí, así que me pasé seis meses estudiando español y finalmente conseguí un trabajo como suplente en el pueblo de Esporles, en lo más profundo de las montañas. María, la propietaria, estaba de baja por maternidad y pude ayudarla. Durante las primeras semanas, antes del parto, asistió a las consultas y me ayudó con los términos veterinarios en español; “Mi perro se lame mucho el culo” no suele aparecer mucho en una conversación normal. Luego conseguí un trabajo fijo con Daniel y Pilar en Arenal. Pero después de un año con ellos, decidí lanzar mi propia clínica: Clinica Veterinaria

Bendinat en 2003, por lo que también hemos celebrado 20 años de cuidado de mascotas.

Investigué mucho y encontré una ubicación estupenda en la rotonda de Bendinat, accesible y fácil de encontrar para los clientes de toda la isla. Creo que lo elegí bien ya que la Plaza Bendinat tiene la ventaja añadida del aparcamiento subterráneo gratuito. Palma tiene la mayor densidad de población pero encontrar plazas y luego aparcar es casi imposible. Los propietarios estresados con animales enfermos pueden aparcar fácilmente cuando vienen a nuestra clínica. Desde el principio, hemos estado muy ocupados.

Queríamos llevar la atención y el tratamiento veterinarios a otro nivel; la atención al cliente y el amor por los animales han sido siempre el objetivo número uno. Fuimos la primera clínica en tener un sitio

web, bastante básico, pero que marcó una tendencia. Siempre pedimos cita previa a los clientes, lo que les ahorra tiempo y nos permite ser más eficientes. Sin embargo, las urgencias se reciben inmediatamente.

Ser el ÚNICO veterinario inglés nos hizo atraer clientes de toda la isla. Sin embargo, estábamos tan ocupados que al cabo de un año contratamos a Cristina, una veterinaria de Madrid. Es muy querida y conocida por sus habilidades y conocimientos, especialmente entre nuestros clientes felinos. Antonio, nuestro nuevo fichaje, también tiene mucho talento y lleva con nosotros dos o tres años. Marina es nuestra enfermera y forma parte de un grupo muy reducido y selecto de enfermeras que poseen un título de enfermería veterinaria debidamente reconocido. Lleva 15 ó 16 años cuidando de los animales hospitalizados u operados. Gracias a sus cuidados y dedicación, los perros

y gatos nunca tienen miedo de volver a la clínica después de una operación importante.

Todos estamos organizados y ayudados por Mari, la gerente de la clínica, que estuvo conmigo durante los primeros 5-6 años de la clínica, antes de marcharse para formar su familia. Ha vuelto con nosotros los últimos 4-5 años. Sólo nos queda Alba, que se encarga de la recepción y de dar la bienvenida a nuestros clientes y darles golosinas. de dar la bienvenida a nuestros clientes y dar golosinas a sus mascotas. Hemos tenido más de una “celebridad” en la clínica. Rafa Nadal” viene a la clínica todos los días (ver la foto - ¡es mi Staffie!)
