undreds of golfers took part in the 2nd gastronomic Tournament at Real Golf of Bendinat on Saturday, February 23rd. Between 9 and 5pm they battled it out on the green for the coveted trophies and later tucked into fantastic food and wine at the Eagle Restaurant in the club. There was plenty of choice too, from 3 different kinds of paella, sushi and salads but the longest queue by far was at the Jamรณn counter and it was definitely worth the wait. Entertainment was provided by Manu Lloris Cabranes whose Asturian bagpipe playing went down a storm. ll roads led to IL Carpaccio in Santa Ponsa last month for another quintessential gathering organised by the effervescent Cleo and her Diamante Events ensemble. Once again it was a sellout event attended by many locally familiar faces all of which had a fantastic time enjoying a beautifully prepared 6 course gourmet dinner whilst being serenaded by the amazing talents of Mallorquin Hearthrobs IL DUO. Our own Kaia was there to capture the moments and judging from the hangover she suffered the next morning, a wonderful night was had by all. But don’t take our word for it, look out for the next one coming soon and see for yourselves. :)

lmost 4 years later, we are pursuing one of our dreams. That is to organise music events which simply burst at the seams with a gathering of great people enjoying good moments and dancing to soulful house tunes. Why soulful house you may ask? The word Soulful defines an era of the 70’s and for us, expresses a feeling or emotion which comes from the soul. The word house in the music scene derives from electronically created dance beats. So when we put soulful and house together, what we create is a style of music which encompasses an expression of timeless melodic tunes coupled with beautiful ,soulful vocals. This music seamlessly connects us and expresses joy, love and the desire to just dance! So, here it is... Chapter 2, Soulful Friday Shakedown. A selection of some of the best soulful house tunes, mixed by Roberto Mocha. Come along and get into the groove with us on Friday 22nd February, at the stunning location, Can Blanc Restaurant from 6pm to 11pm. Watch this space for more news on this event! Thanks for taking the time to read our story so far! We look forward to seeing you on our journey. Sebastian & Zakia

by Wendy Wighton Urquhart ebastián Ginard has a unique talent for combining technology with art and he’s making a name for himself in Mallorca and the United States. “My style is very unique because my work is a mixture of different techniques that’s inspired by graffiti, street art and pop art.” An avid fan of technology, a career in IT was a no brainer but in his spare time Sebastián loved to draw and paint and it wasn’t long before he started experimenting with the two. “My technique starts with digital images, which i put on different canvases then I finish them all by hand, dripping paint, adding collages, spraying, whatever i feel it needs, i love to get my hands dirty and I really get involved in the process.”

“My style is very unique because my work is a mixture of different techniques that’s inspired by graffiti, street art and pop art.”
It’s not just his technique that’s different, Sebastián also loves to recycle objects by turning them into art. “Like all creative people i’m always thinking about new styles, new elements and new canvases. The shutters are very special to me because they’re authentic Mallorcan and it makes me feel so good to give them new life. The idea for the pallets came to me very suddenly, i’d seen them being used for lots of different things but when I added my artist they looked really unusual and cool, i love them.” The price of Sebastián’s work depends on how big the piece is, how many images are included and how long it takes to do the work. A 1 metre square dinner table costs around 2,500 euros and no-one will ever have one the same because Sebastián’s designs are never repeated, and he’s happy to take his client’s ideas onboard too. “I see my art as something that’s very flexible, if you see a piece that you like but you want different colours, different images, your house, your dog, a country, that’s no problem, you can choose

Boats, Bikes & Automobiles
I
By Hamish Goddard t is a great pleasure to have been invited to submit a diary column on ‘Boats, Bikes and Automobiles...’ for Mallorca’s Celebrity magazine, and to enjoy this privileged opportunity to give you a flavour of some of the things to look out for within each of these pastimes taking place on our fabulous island in 2019 – and it is a busy schedule already! On the sailing front, it is not nearly as seasonal as one may think, with plenty of winter-series regattas taking place outside the big events of the summer - which will include the Palma Vela at the beginning of May, the Palma Superyacht Cup in June, the TP52 Superseries in July and the Copa del Rey in August, all of which are major regattas on the international calendar with plenty of rockstar helmsmen and fantastic yachts taking part. My day job continues with e3 Systems, suppliers of communications solutions to the super yacht industry and Palma retains its position as one of the world’s primary berthing and refit hubs, bringing some of the most prestigious and important yachts and associated events to our local waters - not to mention a huge amount of income... Nature was kind to this island in infinite ways, but also in placing us close to the gateway of the Mediterranean as yachts pass through between seasons spent in the Med and the Caribbean - with a beautiful city open all year round, beaches and mountains, and an airport with huge capacity and within easy reach of anywhere in Europe. Is there any wonder the island is mooted as being one of the best places in the world to live?! CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 22
As Vice-President of the Driving Mallorca Classic and Performance Car Club, we were invited to bring our members along to the ‘9 Treffen Tramuntana’ Cape to Cape Rally with its regular slot at the beginning of February and it’s not-for-the-faint-hearted route from Andratx to Formentor over the Tramuntana mountains. The event gets bigger every year with around 70 cars taking part this time, most of which were Porsche 911s in various iterations - although as capable as they unquestionably are, it was fun that some true exotics joined us for the day, amongst which was a garish but spectacular deep purple McLaren 720s. Lluc Monastery was the midway pit stop - an unlikely choice for this raucous bunch - and they provided a truly magnificent spread.
For those interested in ‘car culture’, it’s worth popping up to Son Moix stadium on Sunday mornings for ‘Cars and Coffee’ - a gathering of hundreds of cars from hot hatches to hypers..
I have also been busy organising our first-of-the-year ‘Grand Hotel Sunday Brunch’ drive-outs, meeting early on a Sunday and going for a 1-2 hour blast, finishing our latest instalment of this theme at the magnificent Son Net Hotel in Puigpunyent in mid-February. These events typically take place on one of the middle Sundays of each month aside from high summer - and further details can be found on the ‘Club Driving Mallorca’ Facebook page for anyone that wishes to join us in their ‘fast, interesting or classic car’! Our regular 6.00pm-onwards Wednesday evening Classic & Sportscar Shows start again at the beginning of March at The Boat House Bar & Restaurant on the Paseo Maritimo, opposite the Palma Auditorium. For those into rallying, Porto Portals hosts the XV Mallorca Rally Clasico from 7-9th March from its base at Puerto Portals. This annual event has also grown to become one of the premier classic rallies in the Mediterranean basin, with around 90 cars arriving from all over Europe to participate. If you have one evening free in March, make sure you can be in the port on the afternoon/evening of the 7th, as the cars gather all day and begin departing at 8.00pm for the first of the night stages. I will be competing with my buddy Gordon Cox in our e3 Systems Lotus Elise SC - as car No 1, so the first car on that brightly lit starting ramp! It’s a fantastic evening so come along and see everything from modern hypercars to classic Cobras, Jags and Ferraris, to the World Rally Championship Group B monsters of the mid 1980s, banned for being too fast and dangerous. See link for further details: https://www.rallyislamallorca.com
Boats, Bikes & Automobiles
Perhaps the only sport taking a bit of a break from its habitual hunting ground in the Tramuntana mountains is motorcycling, or at least in any significant numbers. With the Ma-10 (perhaps one of the best motorcycle routes to be found anywhere on earth) being on the predominantly north facing side of a mountain range, it doesn’t see much of the low winter sunshine. This makes it slippery and occasionally green with moss in places, so those out for some ‘sports-bike scratching’ generally stay away until Spring has solidly arrived. I went over the lakes for a recce recently on the BMW 1200 and found it as beautiful as always, but treacherous and cold.. For keen bikers on the island, a date to look out for is the 14th April this year, with the annual International Touristic Meeting Challenge that starts at 9.30am in Palma and laps the island via all the classic routes. Get it in the diary and join literally thousands of other bikes on this magnificent and extremely noisy day out!
Whilst we are on two wheels, a date for next year is to make sure that you are hanging over the barriers on the Paseo Maritimo for the bunch sprint finish of the European Pro Cycling Tour’s ‘Challenge Mallorca’ road race - won this year by the German Marcel Kittel - and right up there with his 14 Tour de France stage victories I’m sure! A spectacular event, including some of the world’s top riders amidst a carnival atmosphere in the middle of Palma. I look forward to writing the column this year in the new look magazine - and even more into undertaking the necessary research..

Tracey Furness -Lifestyle Charters
M
by Wendy Wighton Urquhart allorca is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean for Charter bookings mainly because it has stunning bays, lots of private coves and Ibiza, Menora and Formentera are close enough for a day trip. Tracey Furness is the owner of Lifestyle Charters in Portals Nous, 20 minutes from Palma and just up the street from the glitzy Puerto Portals Marina where top of the range boats dock within shouting distance of designer shops and top class restaurants. Tracey has up to 40 boats on her books in the summer season, roughly half are for hire, the rest are private boats and they’re all between 34 feet and 100 feet long, so there’s a lot of hard work involved. “We do the whole thing from start to finish,” she tells me, “we code the boats for charter, get all the documentation, and licences intact, service the boats, the engine, the air conditioning, and the generators, so it’s one great big huge package.” Lifestyle Charters offers two options; the Bareback Charter is for people who have a licence and can drive the boat themselves and the Skipper Charter comes with a Skipper and full crew. Tracey’s been in the business for more than 20 years and has known most of her clients since she started so she knows exactly which crew fit with each client and quite a lot of them are celebrities. “We’ve had lots of famous people come to us, like Idris Elba, Ant and Dec, Calvin Harris, Naomi Campbell, and loads and loads of others and all of them have been great. They’re just here to sunbathe and chill out and of course, sometimes we get a huge list of must have’s for the boat but other times hardly anything.” Working in the charter industry isn’t always such a glamorous job though. “Boats do break down so your ‘phone is by your ear 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from Easter until October and you can’t take holidays.” says Tracey. “People will call and say they can’t start the engine, so you have to go through everything with them to solve the problem and usually it’s something really simple and then they’re on their way. If it’s something more serious, we have to get them back to the berth and get the engineers to sort it out. But nine times out of ten if you’ve passed your exams you’ll know something about engines and our engineers can talk through the problem on the ‘phone and get it solved fairly quickly.” If you want to charter a boat from Lifestyles you have to prove that you can actually drive it and Tracey’s adamant that if you’re not seaworthy you’re not going anywhere. “We have a two page handover sheet and we go through everything on there, which takes about 2 to 3 hours and if a client can’t prove that they can drive the boat then they’ll have to pay for tuition from a Yacht Master who will ultimately decide if and when the client is fit to drive a boat. Posidonia is a type of seagrass covers the seabed in the Mediterranean and is an essential part of the eco-system. Tracey’s passionate about the environment and does everything she can to make sure her clients are aware of the need to protect the posidonia. CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 26
Tracey Furness, Lifestyle Charters owner “Every single person who charters a boat from us gets a printout of the Government’s rules and regulations on posidonia in several different languages as part of our document pack, it’s something that’s really important to me and my team. Lifestyle Charter’s crews are also instructed to do as much as they can to minimise ocean pollution. “Years ago we used to clean the bilges out and chuck all the crap over the side,” says Tracey. “But obviously we know better now so we make sure that any oil goes into drums and is taken to a designated area in the port and every crew member that works with us is told never to throw anything overboard and also to pick out any plastic they see in the ocean and put it in the bin.” Charter boats to the rich and famous sounds like a great job, but Tracey tells me it costs a fortune to maintain them. “If you buy a 40 footer you’re probably going to be spending about 20,000 euros a year on maintenance and you still have to pay the crew on top of that.” she says. “Then during the season something always goes wrong or something packs up, so honestly, whatever you spend on buying a boat you’ll spend at least 10 percent of that every year on maintenance and mooring fees alone.” Lifestyle Charters has had tons of special requests for wedding proposals and Tracey told me about one of her all time favourites. “One time we had to put hundreds of helium balloons inside a 70 foot boat, then open the doors and let the balloons out when the client proposed to his girlfriend on the little boat in the middle of the ocean, it was really romantic.” Lifestyle Charters is a family business, Tracey’s oldest son is already working for the company and her youngest is a Trainee Engineer at Williams Balear. They both grew up alongside the children of Tracey’s clients so the trust that she’s established will now carry on through the next generation. “The red carpet is all about fashion so a good dress will sell better than a big celebrity but you need to have the head to toe shot to sell it. The atmosphere is very intense and it’s incredibly competitive because you’re up against the big photography agencies.”
“Now it’s all about the new, young people like Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Cara Delevingne who sell more because they have such a massive following on Instagram. Basically if you’re not on Social Media your picture won’t sell.”
When a few big stars arrive at the same time, it can cause chaos on the red carpet, especially for the photographers and Juan says he really has to be on the ball.
As old Hollywood gets pushed aside and a new type of celebrity emerges Juan says he’ll be there, ready and waiting for the next generation to strike a pose.
“I can’t miss any big names or nominees because I have clients all over the world and also there are actors on the red carpet who are maybe not famous but certain editors desperately want their photo. In the beginning I used to watch all the movies and read all the magazines, but now I don’t have to do that so much because I see the celebrities every day and it’s easier to keep up with who’s who and what’s new.” Juan enjoys every second of his time on the red carpet, but he’s noticed that Hollywood is changing, mainly thanks to the likes of Snapchat and Instagram. “Social media is killing the photographers market. Editors used to wait for photographers to send top quality photos, but now they take what they can get from bloggers, regardless of the quality, because they get it for nothing.” Juan says Magazine Editors are also changing their focus.

Judge Jules
by Wendy Wighton Urquhart
ulius O’Riordan, or Judge Jules is a world famous DJ, Record Producer, and Specialist Entertainment lawyer and a big fan of Mallorca. He’s agreed to talk to Celebrity Mallorca and I’ve just parked outside his house in El Toro when he pulls up in a convertible, which like the man himself, has been around the block a few times and is definitely not flashy. He immediately jumps out of the car to welcome me with a kiss on the cheek and as his wife Amanda mouths ‘sorry’ because she’s on the ‘phone, it’s clear that these two people are normal, down to earth and instantly likeable. We dump our stuff inside before heading up to the fabulous roof terrace to take in the stunning sea views. They bought this villa last August and although they spend more time in London and have a house in Ibiza, Jules says Mallorca feels like home. “I’m from London and I think if you’re a city person, especially in the winter there’s just more of an alliance, if you like, with a place that’s based around a city. Ibiza is just too dead in the winter. I mean I’ve got, dare I say it, a bigger, nicer house in Ibiza but I just feel more at home here in Mallorca.”
Jules has always lived in London and has very fond memories of his childhood despite a devastating family tragedy at an early age. “I was brought up in Crouch End, my Dad was a TV Director and my Mum was a teacher and I just had a normal childhood really. I went to a comprehensive school until I was 16 and then I went to a private school in my 6th form. My mother died when i was CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 32
18 so that was probably the first moment in my life really where normality and happiness was slightly ripped to shreds. Eventually one comes to terms with things and obviously many, many years have passed since then but I had a completely happy childhood, up until that point anyway.” The first record he ever got was Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell which was a present from his Mum, who clearly knew that music was front and centre in her son’s life. “I just loved music, I mean, I think that the life story of deejays has a common thread that runs through it in that you adore music. I went to loads of gigs when I was a kid and I was very passionate and fanlike about some the acts that i liked. But then, as you get to age 16 and beyond being very passionate about music starts to look a little bit geeky and arguably a little bit less cool and I think that’s why a lot of people become deejays because it allows you to continue being a bit of an anorak but with a cool title and a cool backdrop.” As a teenager Jules got together with one of his friends to entertain the neighbours, and in doing so, set his future career in motion. “I put on events at a venue in London when i was 16 or 17 for the people of the neighbourhood, probably 600, 700, 800 capacity events and I was deejaying alongside the guy I started with called Rollo, who’s actually a very successful Music Producer in his own right. manda O’Riordan is very happily married to Judge Jules and as well as being a wife and mother she also does a weekly radio show in Mallorca, a weekly double page spread for the Ibizan expat newspaper and writes a Facebook fashion blog which has more than 20,000 readers a week.
“I’ve always loved fashion, ”she confesses“ I studied art at school, then I went into graphic design and I was the Production Editor of various magazines when I was 19. I moved into fashion directing for Freeman’s Catalogues in the UK and I used to commission photographers, recce the locations and choose the models.” It was during one of those catalogue fashion shoots in Mallorca that Amanda went out to dinner with a model called Rachel, and that friendship changed her life. Rachel’s boyfriend knew Jules so when she got back to London she set Amanda and Jules up on a blind date and the rest, as they say, is history. “We got married a couple of years after we met and I kind of gave up work to travel with Jules. We had our son and we went all around the world over and over again with my Mum who was our nanny. We did that for years until I had Phoebe, then we had to settle down because the kids had to go to school.” Amanda also has a good voice and when she was in her 20’s she had a pretty successful singing career. “I was on Top of the Pops and it was just before it finished so i’m lucky to have got that and I think i’ve still got it on VHS somewhere. A lot of people ask me if i would go back to singing but I don’t think so because i’m in my 40’s now and there’s too much competition out there.” Now she’s returned to fashion and this girl loves to shop. “I like to see what’s going on out there, not just online i will actually physically go shopping. I like FAN Mallorca, it ticks all the boxes if you want to go to a few different shops. But if you’re looking for something special you can’t beat the little back streets of Palma.” Amanda’s also thinking of turning her hand to designing and all being well she’s hoping to launch a new label by the end of this year. “There’s a girl in London that wants me to go halves on a new vintage clothing label. We want to buy clothing like Bianca Jagger white suits and boho maxi dresses and create a brand new label.” CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 35

by Wendy Wighton Urquhart he City of Sóller nestles amongst the orange groves of Mallorca’s Golden Valley, in the north west corner of the island where the jagged crags of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains serve up a dramatic backdrop. It’s famous for its oranges, olive oil and ice cream and is a popular destination for mountain hikes cycling enthusiasts and day trippers from Palma. It takes about 30 minutes to get there by car or 45 minutes if you take the TIB bus, which costs less than 3 euros and leaves from Estació Intermodal, across the street from Plaça d’España. But the best way by far to travel to Sóller is onboard the vintage wooden train which dates back to 1912. Tickets cost 18€ one way, 25€ return or 32€ for a return journey including return tickets for the tram in Sóller. You can only buy them on the day and you have to pay with cash, credit cards are not accepted. It’s also worthwhile checking the time of the last train back to Palma, because extra connections are often added during the summer months to meet demand. The train leaves from the Ferrocarril de Sóller station next door to Estació Intermodal several times a day and chugs CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 36
through more than 20 miles of stunning countryside with staggering mountain views. It stops in Bunyola long enough to jump off and take some photos. There’s a museum inside Sóller Railway Station with paintings by Joan Miró and sculptures by Pablo Picasso as well as some brilliant photographs of these two great artists who were very close friends back in the day. Other museums worth visiting are Museu de Casal de Cultura de Sóller, the Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals which is in a 20th century palace called Camp d’en Prohom and Can Prunera Museu Modernista. The latter is housed in a gorgeous art nouveau mansion in Carrer sa Lluna with temporary and permanent art and sculpture exhibitions, original early 20th century furniture and beautiful gardens. Two minutes down the hill from Sóller train station you’ll find Plaça de la Constitució, which is the heart of the city and a constant hub of activity. Bars and coffee shops are dotted around the square and it’s a great place to grab lunch or a drink before exploring the narrow side streets of Sóller where traditional shops sell local produce, hand made baskets and other artisanal products. On Satur-
days the market stalls are heaving with fruit and veg, ceramics and clothes and of course many, many momentos of Sóller. The square itself is dominated by Sant Bartomeu church which dates back to the 16th century and was renovated in 1904 by Joan Rubió i Bellver, who studied with renowned Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí. The modernist facade of the old Banco de Sóller next door which was also designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver is now home to a branch of Santander Bank. There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Sóller and Toni Oliver has worked in quite a few of them. Born and bred in Sóller, he started working in the hotel trade while he was studying tourism at university. “I started as a Night Receptionist, before becoming a Daytime receptionist, then Head receptionist. When I was 25, I became Assistant Manager in a big hotel in the port, but I always wanted to find a hotel for myself and when I had the opportunity to buy Hotel Vila in 2006 I just did it.”

“You’re not allowed to build anything in the mountains here so the excessive building that’s happened in other parts of Mallorca will never happen here and the mountains will never change.” Hotel Vila, which faces the church at the entrance to Carrer sa Lluna, was built in the early 1900’s and used to be the private home of a Spanish family who made their fortune in the orange trade. It’s now a boutique hotel with 8 rooms, an apartment and a studio and Toni says the conversion was done with extreme care to respect and preserve the original craftsmanship. “This building was in very poor condition when we bought it and I employed a team of 8 women just to restore the paintings because it was really important to me to keep as many of the original features and as much of the art on the walls as possible.” Toni told me there are also very strict rules in place to preserve the beauty and history of the city of Sóller and the surrounding area. “You’re not allowed to build anything in the mountains here so the excessive building that’s happened in other parts of Mallorca will never happen here and the mountains will never change. What has changed is that since the tunnel toll was abolished last year, a lot more people come here and that’s really made a huge difference to us and to many other businesses in Sóller.” Vintage trams have been ferrying passengers and merchandise between Sóller and the port since 1913 and are one of the city’s biggest CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 37

It takes about half an hour to trundle down the hill between back gardens chock full of orange and lemon trees and on distant hillsides the olive groves are perfectly framed by mountain peaks. Cycling has become a major event in Mallorca and hundreds of thousands of cyclists come to the island in the Spring and Autumn to attempt the challenging routes in the Tramuntana Mountains. very year, billions of tourists are seduced by pictures of turquoise oceans and white sandy beaches. But whether it’s a desert island or a holiday resort in the Costas, those beautiful beaches are not always so pristine when the visitors leave. Plastic bags, bottles, cups and cutlery are just some of the things that are often discarded without a second thought and the sad thing is all that garbage will be pulled into the ocean at the next high tide. It’s not just rubbish from the beach that’s the problem, litter from the streets gets blown into storm drains, and eventually that ends up in the ocean too and the results can be deadly. Social media is awash with horror stories of marine life caught up in plastic and birds that choked to death after swallowing polystyrene packing they thought was food. Last year a dead whale washed ashore in Spain with 29 kilos of plastic in its stomach and a dolphin starved to death because the plastic in its gut stopped it from digesting food. Attempts to persuade people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly continue to fall on deaf ears and coastlines are becoming nothing more than ugly garbage dumps. life and is also an avid surfer. He got so sick of seeing oceans and harbours clogged with oil and trash that he decided to invent a device that would clean up the mess that other people had left behind. For Andrew the solution is simple. “If you can have rubbish bins on land, why not have them in the ocean.” “I started basically
with a wheelie bin. I put it in the water, attached a pump to it and sucked all the water out of it. It took a while to figure out how to do it and i’ve made a few of different versions” A few years and several prototypes later Andrew and his business partner, Peter Ceglinski, launched the first Seabin. It’s a device that works in all conditions and is capable of collecting between one and two tons of rubbish a year from the ocean, including microplastics, oil and detergents, and it’s very easy to install. “It’s basically bolted to a floating pontoon so that it goes up and down with the tides and it’s easy to access. A pump funnels water and floating rubbish into the device. The water is sucked through the Seabin, and the garbage stays in the special catch bag inside. The water is then pumped back into the ocean but first it goes through an oil-water separator to filter out fuel and scum.” The Seabin does have to be maintained regularly but Andrew says it’s a pretty straightforward process. “The rubbish that’s collected in the catch bag needs to be emptied out at least once a day, and the barnacles have to be cleaned off the outside of the Seabin

If you’d like to make a donation to the Seabin Project or pay for one for your local Yacht Club, port or marina just log on to www.seabinproject.com and follow the links. At the heart of the Seabin Project is a deep rooted concern for the environment and Andrew says him and Pete are convinced that putting education front and centre is the best way to fight plastic pollution. “We really want to make people aware of what’s going on in their oceans.” Students from schools and universities all over the world are now learning about plastic waste CELEBRITY MALLORCA - 114 | 41

t was a great pleasure to receive a phone call to ask if I would write for the new owners of Celebrity Magazine as their Property Correspondent for Mallorca, having been involved in the luxury real estate market since arriving on the island in 2002. The Mallorca real estate market is an interesting microcosm, a bubble in the European market place quite different to mainland Spain. Fortunately for Mallorca, the government have been quite prudent in protecting many large areas of protected green zone. This has been reinforced with the designation of the Tramuntana Mountain Range as a World Heritage Site, providing assurance that these areas will remain protected well into the next century and beyond. This in itself has provided Mallorca with a more stable property market
environment compared to the mainland. With limited building land and high demand, prices in many regions, particularly the Southwest, have exceeded the pre-crash values seen in 2008, with frontline sea view properties highly desirable and in short supply. 2018 came to an end with a strong year in property sales for many, myself included, although others reported not as high as the levels of 2017. According to the latest statistics of the General Council of Notaries, the German market was the highest while the Swedish, French, Swiss and Italians grouped together as the second highest market, with a slump from the Brits. The Italian market is apparently growing substantially, encouraged by numerous direct connections between Italy and the Balearic Islands all year round and the growth is set to continue. Italy is already the fifth nationality with more resident foreigners and the only one, along with China, which has not stopped growing during all the years of the crisis in Spain. For the Brits 2019 is bound to be an interesting year, to say the least!! It’s difficult to glimpse a picture of the Brexit outcome – will it be no-deal or not?! Will we even Brexit, or won’t we?!! Theresa May’s last-ditch attempt to rally the troops failed dismally and this cliff-hanger of a drama looks likely to continue right up to ‘B-Day’ (as opposed to a more celebrated ‘D Day’), to the discomfort of most concerned. How this will affect the property market is yet to be seen, with a lot of speculation how it will affect us in general. Speaking with lawyer Javier Cases from Cases Y Asociados, his opinion is that for those of us already listed as Spanish Residents life should not change too drastically. Whether there will be visa requirements for the British with property here, or those visiting, remains to be seen and will depend on whether we Brexit with or without a deal, and how Britain treats their own EU nationals. However, using the Swiss as a precedent, they used to require a Spanish visa but no longer do, so one would assume that once the dust settles, travel will become easier and life in general will return to a relative norm.

If a Resident British citizen pre March 30 2019 the Withdrawal Agreement will provide for a transition period until December 31 2020, with our rights under EU law maintained except the right to vote for the European Parliament. The Resident’s ID cards will also be valid, but once the transition period has begun we will need to apply for a Foreign Identity Card (TIE). If arriving during the transition period these cards will be issued directly. New expat Brit arrivals seeking residency and employment after the transition period will be subject to decisions taken on both sides of the Channel. But it will be more difficult, particularly with employment, as an employer will have to prove there is no Spanish national or Spanish resident who fulfils the job requirement. This will no-doubt be a concern for those with businesses that predominantly employ seasonal British staff such as in key tourist areas like Magaluf.

One tip I would definitely give is to convert your driving license to a Spanish license, otherwise you will be required to take a Spanish driving test rather than merely make an exchange. There are definitely turbulent times ahead, and of course anyone’s bet where we will be when the next Celebrity issue is published!

I cannot recommend Lifestyle properties & Building Solutions highly enough. From purchasing my property from the Lifestyle team they then carried out a full refurbishment of the 3 bedroom apartment, and they completed it on-time, on budget and to the highest level of quality. Nothing was too much trouble for Carl and his team. Not only did they deliver to the specification but they also provided a great idea which was invaluable in achieving a fantastic result. Having a construction background and having built my own house in the UK, I set the bar high in terms of my expectations. Carl and his team exceeded them. I can therefore say that I am 100% comfortable in recommending Lifestyle Properties & Lifestyle Building Solutions. Jim McInnes

THE NEW WAVE FOR
ESTATE AGENTS ACHIEVING RESULTS FOR CLIENTS BY WORKING TOGETHER REU WHERE COLLABORATION MAKES SENSE
By Donna Suarez Real Estates United was created in September 2014 to help people to buy or sell their property faster and more efficiently, by Estate Agents collaborating with other professional Estate Agents. In the past the Real Estate market was incredibly competitive but Real Estates United has launched a brand new, secure system online, which allows professional Estate Agents to access each other’s data without putting client information at risk, and it gets the job done much faster. Members of REU meet every two months, share properties and discuss client’s needs. This revolutionary system also means that when a seller lists a property with one REU agent it can be automatically be picked up by other members and offered direct to their clients, and there’s no extra sales fee. It’s good option for buyers too because all REU member agents have access to a database that’s bulging with a wide range of properties, and it doesn’t cost a penny. REU has more than 70 professional members in Mallorca, so whether you’re buying or selling look out for our logo to make sure you get the best service, the best options and the best results. A sample of REU member agent properties are advertised on the following pages, our agents are waiting for your call and they can’t wait to help you find your forever home. Welcome to Real Estates United, the new and improved way to buy and sell property in Mallorca!
