BRIDAL SHOW ‘GATSBY STYLE’ POLO EVENT SUMMER ENDING BEACH PARTIES PARTY + FUN & EVERYTHING ELSE

Mallorca’s most popular magazine
We have happily journeyed throughout the final month of this summer season, watching and recording each spectacular and interesting happening as it faded into the past. As we watch the last glimmers of sunshine we see that the beaches are now deserted - except for the lonely wandering soul with his dog, or the late tourists who are taking advantage of the odd rays of sunshine for a beachside walk. Yes, summer has packed its bags and gone – leaving us with only the odd sparkle of a blue sky each day – and our amazing memories of a fantastic summer season! In this issue we report on some of the best local stories and features, and again our professionalism in our reports and photography we bring you the very best coverage - the amazing Polo Match and White Party for six hundred given by Christian and Ninon in their amazing country estate. If the fictional Great Gatsby were alive and well, he would have loved every minute of it. A complete contrast to this, although again having its own style was the recent Bridal Show, surely the epitome of all fashion shows for the young bride to-be. Our magnificent Cathedral, in Palma was the backdrop for two entirely different events recently, both spectacular in their own way. One was the Palma Fitness Day held in the park in front of the Cathedral, this was absolutely fabulous and full of so much energy – a great event for anyone who is interested in fitness (even if it’s only to watch!) The second event, a performance inside the Cathedral, by the visiting Welsh Male Choir (all eighty of them) singing in perfect harmony, a truly superb and classical evening of music and song. Now the winter season brings on the more obvious happenings – Halloween being one of them. We visited two venues and found an amazing array of costumes and effects – Beauty and the Beasts were all around! Also we were out again backing several charities to help raise funds for different local causes, The Macmillan Coffee Morning was one such successful event – this due to the tremendous turnout by locals and the amount of hard work put in by the many bars and venues that held these special mornings – and of course due to the amazing generosity of their clients. And so we now look towards another year – another season. So along with our clients in our back pages (you have to look!) – we wish every one of our readers well, both in health and prosperity – enjoy and love.

‘ END OF SUMMER ’ PARTIES
Celebrity Images: photography by Ken & Angela Ross
O! Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer have definitely faded into the past – and what better way of sending them on their way was there than to shake and dance at one of those mad magnificent ‘end of season’ parties held at the many top beach clubs. Puro Beach, Nassau Beach, Zhero Beach Club and Gran Folies all held their own special twist, colour and brand of party – the final celebration that tells us it is all over. Gone are carefree swimwear days of strolling along the beach with your favourite cocktail in hand. As are the days when the most important thing in your life was your perfect suntan, this has now been replaced by your favourite warm winter coat, the one with the fur collar. Here Celebrity shows one such party, Nikki Beach, the theme and dress-code was ‘Red’ - and red it certainly was! Over one thousand refugees of the summer season gathered for the clubs last big-bash, its’ own traditional over–the-top party celebrating the end of yet another summer. Music non-stop, an amazing array of dancers and performing artists with the main currency seemingly being Champagne. Obviously money was going out of style because all we could see was more and more Champagne being served on the beach, the bars and the restaurant. Bottles popped open from every direction, glasses clinked and everyone had a fabulous time - the end of the season – looked more like the end of the world, an amazing party – one where they certainly did paint the town Red!

THE WELSH VOICES IN THE CATHEDRAL They Came, They Sang, They Conquered – We quote, not the exact immortal words - but still a very fitting phrase for this occasion. The eighty strong choristers from ‘The Bridgend Male Choir’ of Wales filled the magnificent Palma Cathedral with such rousing and idyllic vocalization – listening to this choir of such a large concentration of talented singers who could really communicate - was truly beautiful. The concert, organised over many months with Adrian Elkinson (Calvia Lions), Kate Mentink (Rotary Club) and Edward Ingram (The Anglican Church) with Susan Lyons, was an obvious huge success, the Cathedral was full with an estimated one thousand guests. The basic presets of the choir are, as you would expect, top notch. Edward Ingram with the British Vice Consul Lucy Gorman
The ensemble themselves were enthusiastic and in great voice, the basses especially, and the choir performed with a fullness of tone you do not always hear in vocal ensembles of what one may describe (politely) as not totally or fully professional. The tone of Choir was mature and yet still liquid in its power and purity, beautifully balanced and pitched. The choir always made full use of its strong vocal flexibility of style. Combining the traditional with the new, the choir performed even difficult numbers with great aplomb.
Kate Mentink addresses the audience
Singing in both English and their home tongue of Welsh, the choir performed these pieces with colour and understanding, a fitting contribution to an insightful and transcendent evening of music. The performance given at the Cathedral on this evening was of top-class quality, and would have graced any international platform. Founded in 1960 this amazing group of men, this award winning choir, who travelled here at their own expense, were on a fund-raising mission for local Mallorca charities, raising nearly five thousand euro, which was shared between the three hosting charities. A truly enjoyable evening of music in one of the most glorious of environments and settings.
A hard working Adrian Elkinson

Polo – is far more than just another sport or pastime – Polo transcends as a lifestyle, which blatantly encompasses the elite and the royals of our societies. Whether, as in the case of our own younger Prince’s, Harry and William, who with their enthusiasm for the sport brought it into the twenty-first century (it was at a Polo match that William first met Kate) or everyones constant craving to witness our elite at play, Polo remains one of the most glamorous of spectator sports. So it was with pleasure that we once again took the challenging drive down the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range to the coast and the stunning Son Coll estate of Christian Volkers where he was to once again hold the prestigious ‘Engle Volkers Silver Polo Cup’. We, with six hundred other specially invited VIP guests, all clad in our best whites, indulged in what can only be described as an experience of past times – reflecting a time of far less austerity when opulence and style were still King. Amongst a setting and ambience that could only be described as pure ‘Gatsby’, guest mingled along the immaculate dry stone terraces seeking shade in the long lines of white marquees and gazebos as smartly dressed waiters carrying silver trays ensured everyone had refreshment, be it wine, beers or cocktails. On the field, the horsemen played out game after game, proving that man and horse can perform as a team – their skills being shown in their speed and precision. The play and competition was truly spectacular, as was the whole location and presentation. After the play, guests retired to the higher grassed terrace area where dining tables were set as if in a five star restaurant. This was Christians favourite, the Argentinean ‘asado’ barbeque. Although casually referred to as a barbeque, it was in fact far more upmarket as it included an absolutely amazing non-stop selection of exquisite culinary delights – all with an army of waiters ensuring an amazing restaurant style table service. After dinner, a huge staged area became the central hub, with its open bar and live music, the party going on under the stars into the late, late evening. An amazing and thoroughly entertaining event presented by Christian and Ninon – congratulations.

The event also held sales of designer jewellery for Christian and Ninon’s Charity - all proceeds going to school projects in Togo

Love Sundays? - then love a great roast lunch!
As part of our new regular ‘Restaurant Review’ column we decided first to visit Heroes Sports Bar in Portals Nous. OK, this wasn’t the most difficult assignment, we know the bar quite well and certainly in the summer evenings we have frequently enjoyed a cooling drink in the Garden Lounge (beer garden). The garden area has a nice atmosphere, a professional chef runs the regular barbeques and they frequently have very good entertainment. On this occasion, with the warmer evenings not being as frequent, we decided to time our visit to sample the latest seasonal addition to their menu, the ever popular Traditional Sunday Lunch.
eatery is also ideal for families; they even provide a sort of crèche room for the kids to play in, so no bored children kicking the chair behind to you! The new additional Sunday Lunch menu offers you a full selection. On our visit there was a choice of three very interesting starters to choose from. Then for the main course there was the traditional roast lunch with a choice of Beef, Lamb, Chicken or Pork. Also offered, as main course alternatives on this menu were a Medley of grilled Vegetables with potato Puree and Salsas, or Penne with Fishballs, Prawns and Tomato Sauce. (The choices we are advised change weekly). We decided to skip the first course, ordering from the main course, one Beef and one of Pork. Our selected choices of succulent roasts came with a huge Yorkshire Pudding and a good imaginative selection of fresh vegetables with real roast potatoes and a rich red-wine thick gravy – absolutely delicious. For dessert, we chose the Home-made Apple Pie and ice cream, other choices offered were Zabaglione (sweet wine and strawberry), or Brownie with Vanilla ice cream. Prices started at €12.50 for the main course, €15-00 for two courses and €17.00 for all three courses. (after costing the main course, it is relatively easy to work out that the first and/or desert courses are especially good value, so no excuse to deprive yourself of a delicious starter or dessert).
We are adamant fans of Al Fresco Dining, give us just the slightest hint of sunshine and we are happy to be outside. So with Heroes being a Sports Bar with multiple televisions (the holy grail for sports watchers, especially for football) we took the opportunity to avoid the enthusiastic presence of the sports fans (most who were also enjoying Sunday lunch) as they watched the latest premier match. We chose to take advantage of the warm day and eat outside (there is table seating to the front, as well as the huge secluded beer garden at the rear). This
The main courses we tried were as we hoped, both excellent – For the dessert we had to wait an extra few minutes, this due to the busy kitchen and the many bookings – but well worth the wait – real home made Apple Pie straight from the oven and served to our table, again totally delicious. The service is friendly and efficient, remembering this is a ‘bar restaurant’ so don’t expect silver service, but our waitress was there when we needed anything and always with a smile – great food, sensible pricing, great service - what more can you ask!

Palma Day of Fitness & Activity Report and photography by Ken & Angela Ross
The Fitness Fair, ‘Fit-salut 2017’, an annual event, was opened by the Mayor of Palma, Antonio Noguera and by the councillor for sport, Susanna Moll. THE BRIDAL SEASON Celebrity Images - Photography by Ken & Angela Ross
Issue 109 | Celebrity | 25
The models swished and swirled their way along the red-carpeted catwalk, with the young hopeful audience of prospective brides sitting mesmerized by all this immaculate splendour. In the audience, their faces said it all, they beamed with delight, they swooned, fantasized and seemed to be happily daydreaming of their own special day to come. It is this time of year when the bridal boutiques put on displays of their most romantic, bewitching and fairytale white ensembles – the formal bridal gown. Here in Son Termes in an overcrowded room of enthusiastic ‘soon to be married’ young ladies, plus keen fashionistas and also a few fashion designers who preened as they watched their creations pass-by, all beamed with delight. Immaculately dressed and groomed models brought out the very best in what is available for the coming season. Of course the colour is optional, as long as it is white. This season there seemed no choice other than the traditional image of the white wedding dress, and as such, there is only so much designers can do - so similarity amongst the many designers abounded. Never the less it was well presented, very appreciated by the audience and away from the catwalk there was a huge array of stalls offering every service which is attached to the organisation of your special day – with the effect we are sure that many young ‘brides-to-be’ girls dreamed the night away thinking of the splendour they had witnessed that evening.

Far right; Something a little different, we are not sure if it was presented as a wedding gown or something which the bride may wear for the wedding reception later. Right; Something for the ladies (which also brought forward a few cheers and extra smiles), the male fashion also followed the mainly white theme. Below; proving that even a beautiful wedding gown can be deemed as a utility garment, here a full-length dress transforms in an instant into an ‘after the ceremony’ cocktail dress

The Halloween - an amazing European pagan ‘haunting’ which goes back several thousand years – is one that actually travelled to America – lived and flourished to the point of growing nationally and then came back to Europe to haunt us all over again – this time totally commercially. The origin and history of Halloween goes back over 2,000 years, back to Medieval Europe when it was populated by a race of people called the ‘Celts’ (Kelts) with settlements in Ireland, throughout what is now the United Kingdom and in Northern France. The Celts, in their pagan beliefs, believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the earth on this special night of ‘Samhain’ to haunt those still living. Worried that evil spirits would cause death and destruction, the Celts themselves wore costumes that made them appear as the dead. Thinking if they dressed in this way, the spirits would think they were one of them and just pass on by. The Celts also walked the night with lanterns to warn off evil spirits, not pumpkins, as we are given to believe with the Americanisation of the event, but it was then hollowed turnips that were the ‘jack-o-lantern of its time. These named after the phenomenon of a strange light that was said on these evening to be seen everywhere flickering over peat bogs, called will-o’-the-wisp As superstitions became less believable, eventually the event became more of a holiday and was subsequently celebrated in a more light-hearted fashion involving the children. During the evolution of time the religious elders have changed the name several times, Calan Gaeaf, Allhallowtide, All Hallows, Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and Day of the Dead – now more commonly known as simply Halloween. Early costumes were usually very scary, they were often supernatural beings, ghouls or characters from evil folklore stories. More recently (since the 1930’s) costumes of characters from literature, radio or films became popular, although scary costumes are making there comeback once again. For many Christians it is still celebrated as the eve of All Hallows’ Day, which begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide. All Hallows’ Eve is a Christianised feast influenced by the Celtic harvest festivals from its pagan roots.
ls Nou
Of course for most of us now, it is a children’s party event, once it nearly disappeared in Europe until the American influence brought it back into popular culture – the American/Canadian ‘trick-or-treat’ has now become a national favourite with children on both sides of the pond. s

PORTALS - THE LEGEND Portals, a name that encompasses both the prestigious Puerto Portals marina and its neighbouring trendy village of Portals Nous. Set in the heart of the Bay of Palma, Portals is one of the places most popular with the celebrities who visit this Island. Just 10 km far from Palma’s centre and just 16 km from the airport, Portals - the port and the village have every type of business or service that can fulfil any request to accommodate your life style. Puerto Portals is one of the most prestigious nautical and leisure marinas of the Mediterranean. It has more than 670 moorings and offers an amazing array of busy restaurants, some of the finest you will ever find, the service and standard of quality is of the very highest. Plus there are some amazing shopping areas representing some of the most exclusive fashion houses. Visitors come here for the glamorous shopping, exotic drinks, and cocktails you can sip whilst admiring the flashy white shiny yachts and luxury millionaire motor cruisers moored in the marina – it is also fascinating for people watching – the fashions and celebrities. It’s a really international place - think of a smaller Monte Carlo and you’re nearly there. It’s not actually too big - you could walk from one end to the other in fifteen minutes - but it is the pleasure of just being there to sit and enjoy the world as it passes by. With cafes and restaurants aplenty, you can come here for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and admire in quiet envy as the Ferrari’s & Porsches cruise along the Quayside.
To find in Puerto Portals; Restaurants – Spoon, Wellies, Mahal, Socrate and Ritzi. Café’s – Cappuccino and Ramshackle. Health – Bodhana Wellness Centre. Estate Agency – Mallorca Move. Fashion Boutiques – Love Affair. Nautical Supplies – Nauti Parts.
Portals Nous village (with its own beach) sits above the marina and is mostly residential and although it has grown considerably over recent decades, it still retains its original charm.
The village offers total living, with cafes, estate agents, banks, supermarket, nautical supply shops, beauty centre, hardware stores, boutiques, dentist and newsagents. Portals Nous also offers some very good restaurants (most less expensive than the marina, but still offering very good quality and service). It’s especially popular with both British and German homeowners, probably because of its proximity to Palma and its location on the south west coast. There are quite a few apartment blocks and several nearby up-market suburbs consisting of luxury private villas.
To find in Portals Nous; Restaurants – Moo Moos (Steak House), Heroes Sports Bar, and Casa Paco. Health -Denise Beauty Salon. Estate Agents – Prosperity Real Estate, and Real Homes Estate Agents. Supermarket - Cidons (also Newsagent). Dental – Dental Solutions.

THE BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING IN THE WORLD The call went out throughout the world and the biggest coffee morning ever, once again happened. Here in Mallorca there was no hanging back - many cafes and restaurants opened their doors for the charity - in Portals Nous many clients of the popular bar/restaurant Heroes proved enthusiastic to purchase cakes and coffee.
The Olive Tree - their great team all joined in
The hard working charity ‘Cala Nova Cancer Care’ as always has a great following for their event at the Agua hotel in Palma Nova. The charity arranged a day of coffee, cakes and music - a hugely popular event. In Torrenova, The Oliva Tree restaurant also enjoyed full support from its clients and passers-by.
