Polo – is far more than just another sport or pastime – Polo transcends as a lifestyle, which blatantly encompasses the elite and the royals of our societies. Whether, as in the case of our own younger Prince’s, Harry and William, who with their enthusiasm for the sport brought it into the twenty-first century (it was at a Polo match that William first met Kate) or everyones constant craving to witness our elite at play, Polo remains one of the most glamorous of spectator sports. So it was with pleasure that we once again took the challenging drive down the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range to the coast and the stunning Son Coll estate of Christian Volkers where he was to once again hold the prestigious ‘Engle Volkers Silver Polo Cup’. We, with six hundred other specially invited VIP guests, all clad in our best whites, indulged in what can only be described as an experience of past times – reflecting a time of far less austerity when opulence and style were still King. Amongst a setting and ambience that could only be described as pure ‘Gatsby’, guest mingled along the immaculate dry stone terraces seeking shade in the long lines of white marquees and gazebos as smartly dressed waiters carrying silver trays ensured everyone had refreshment, be it wine, beers or cocktails. On the field, the horsemen played out game after game, proving that man and horse can perform as a team – their skills being shown in their speed and precision. The play and competition was truly spectacular, as was the whole location and presentation. After the play, guests retired to the higher grassed terrace area where dining tables were set as if in a five star restaurant. This was Christians favourite, the Argentinean ‘asado’ barbeque. Although casually referred to as a barbeque, it was in fact far more upmarket as it included an absolutely amazing non-stop selection of exquisite culinary delights – all with an army of waiters ensuring an amazing restaurant style table service. After dinner, a huge staged area became the central hub, with its open bar and live music, the party going on under the stars into the late, late evening. An amazing and thoroughly entertaining event presented by Christian and Ninon – congratulations.
