THE WHITE PARTY

Issue 108 | Celebrity | 9

IF IT’S NOT IN

Celebrity Exclusive photograpic coverage and report by Ken and Angela Ross

- IT DIDN’T HAPPEN

White is the thing – no doubt about it – and on a date in early June if you had simply scrawled in your diary the words ‘White Party’ then that was enough! For ‘white Party’ in the early season straightforwardly means the Islands beach clubs are opening! It means beach summer is here and this is the official launch-pad for the jet setters, the island elite, high-end visitors and the beautiful night people to start their partying – its now officially white party time – welcome to the start of another hectic season! So on this particular evening, Nikki’s night, one thousand of Mallorca’s finest party-goers, all donned their very best traditional white garbs and gathered together. We arrived and like others, were soon customarily tagged and with wristbands firmly in place we are all directed through our appropriate entrances – in our case VIP. As we enter we were greeted by a huge round of applause and cheers from the Nikki staff who had formed a corridor of honour. This can be terribly embarrassing but it is all very American and is in good fun and as we watched, it is easy to see it is actually very much appreciated by other guests entering the special dining and VIP areas. Last year at one of the many white parties, we talked to one of the guests who was at the stage of buying his second bottle of ‘extremely expensive’ Champagne, asking his feelings and motivation for this, remembering this is not exactly the ‘cheapest night out’ you will ever have in your life, he explained his simple philosophy. “When I walk in to these white parties I feel like a millionaire and that’s how I behave. Crazy I know, but doing it just now and then, is amazing and I enjoy every single minute of it.” And you know what, this year again nothing had changed – all of the people at these white parties dressed and acted like millionaires (although we suspect a good number actually were) – the enjoyment amongst the crowds was huge - the ladies were gorgeous, the fashions were incredible and every single person was there to enjoy themselves. At Nikki Beach this year the theme was ‘Circus’ and all the staff were dressed appropriately – amazing dancers, showgirls and entertainers. Tearing ourselves away from the sky VIP balcony (overlooking the entire party) we moved towards one of the bars and found there that not everyone wanted to be a millionaire, most had simply purchased a general entrance ticket (still expensive) and were enjoying themselves by just having a drink and watching everything going on around them, ,the gorgeous dancers, the live music and DJ’s, the entertainment plus of course the biggest draw of the evening – the glamorous guests themselves! If you love people watching, a white party is definitely the place to be on party nights – as our exclusive photo coverage at Nikki Beach shows. Continued overleaf

Something slightly more unusual for Diners this season when one of the top Puerto Portals restaurants ‘Spoon’ held another of their hugely popular fashion shows. The casual summer fashions were presented by Billy’s Boutique (Puerto Portals), gaining praise with repeated rounds of applause from diners. Fashions for the beach, around the pool or for that more sophisticated evening meal were presented by several charming professional models. Light music enhanced the evening, allowing diners to enjoy that little something extra special, this of course complimented the superb food served by the restaurant. Boutique owner Heidi Luebke said that she was pleased with the presentation and assured guests that this would now become a regular event. Exclusive photographs by Ken & Angela Ross

ANOTHER OPENING - ANOTHER SHOW ! The beautiful people are out for ‘another opening’

Exclusive photographic coverage & report by Ken and Angela Ross

Another Venue Opening - Another Show ; welcome to the start of another season. Another change of ownership, of management or just a re-presentation of a popular venue refurbished. It happens as regular as does the increase in temperature come early June, and just as consistent on its arrival is the inevitable opening party where the clever PR’s unfold their secret lists and the beautiful (and affluent) people are invited. And so the show begins – enter left; some of the most beautiful women you will ever see. Couture, in vogue, chic and a la mode – the fashions are as staggering as the ladies who wear them. Their escorts, usually male are more casual, a simple apparel shows the ‘I don’t care, I am wealthy and I have a beautiful girl on my arm’ scenario. Bermuda shorts are becoming favourite this season for these more hot-weather dressy formal events.

Of course to compliment this show of style the host must reciprocate and present an immaculate venue, waiters ever present to ensure everyone has a choice of beverages – not forgetting of course the canapés (which in flair and taste have to certainly out-shine any previous other openings this season). One such opening was Bahia Mediterraneo, an elegant restaurant, come club, come disco, which offered everything their guests could hope for. Attentive and immaculate staff, a never ending supply of drinks ferried backwards and forwards by waiters and of course the ardent foodies queuing to be served by the nice man cutting thin slices of Iberian Ham, and again, the ever present waiters armed with canapés. An opening that certainly attracted the attendance of the most elite of the beautiful night people of Palma – and to be fair, an evening when everyone who attended we are sure enjoyed every minute – a truly glamorous affair. Huge Palma fashion show gives platform for the islands new talent to present their latest creations! Exclusive photographic coverage & report by Ken and Angela Ross

MALLORCA DESIGN DAY

On one of the warmest evenings of the year, the Moll Vell was the perfect setting for a gala ‘Cat-walk Fashion Show’. Set against the backdrop of magnificent La Seu Cathedral and by to the quayside with its shining white super yachts, several hundred specially invited guests mingled. Here in the cordoned-off area at the base of the giant steps of The Milla de Oro restaurant complex, several seating areas had been arranged with beverage distributors sponsoring the free bars. Certainly you could feel the fashion theme throughout with many guests trying (and probably succeeding) to out-do the fashion presentations. It was an evening where the designers mixed with family and friends, there to support their favourite - and no doubt many more there to support their daughters who were modelling the fashions. The occasion was the opportunity for six of the islands designers to show and be judged on their creations – the winner being Pilar Sarmiento for his unusual printed assemblies. Another contender was Anna Iranzo who’s creations of shinny red trouser and tops were said to have been inspired by Coca Cola (one of the sponsors). Although well received by the audience, some commented that it was a little towards ‘Art School fashion’ and not as main stream or as serious a fashionista showing as it could have been. Although who knows? Possibly these are the designers of the future, the new big brand names whose designs we may all be eagerly queuing up to purchase - come the next season. Overall it was a quite pleasant evening, marred slightly we felt by the chaos amongst the attending administrative staff themselves. Rarely have we seen so many ‘staff’ badges on so many people, who seemingly spent the evening gathering to ask each other questions or holding their hands in the air in frustration? Never the less, an appreciative audience enjoyed the evening, it was an opportunity to socialise, show innovative fashion trends, which no doubt took a great amount of effort, pre-organisation and work contributed by Ajuntament de Palma – well done! ONCE AGAIN THE LIONS ROAR The charity group ‘Calvia Lions’ held their hugely popular annual ‘Charter Evening’ (a non-profit making event to thank those who have supported them during the previous year), where well over one hundred guests enjoyed great entertainment, a fantastic atmosphere with a three course meal complimented with selected wines – all totally splendid. Enjoying a warm evening at The Golf Hotel, Santa Ponsa, guests enjoyed a Cava reception before dining on the restaurant terraces which offers beautiful and idyllic views over the surrounding countryside. There was a short opening speech from the Lions president Adrian Elkinson thanking everyone for their continued support, with special presentations for service made to Uschi Berndt (Lions Social Services Officer), Jean Wooding (Treasurer) and Toni Wimborne (Secretary and Organiser).

Singer Liam Live gets the party going

There was also a presentation of the ‘Honourary Lions Key’ to member Brian Baumal for his work in volunteer recruitment. Over a thousand euros was raised from the evenings raffle and auction which will be shared between the ‘Dolly Memorial Fund’ and ‘Nemo’ (an amazing charity which works with children with Cerebral Palsy – Lions donated a ‘Light Room’, a state of the art computerised system which helps to stimulate the brain of suffers). Tony Paris and Liam Live were the entertainers for the evening, Tony (James Bond look-alike in Tuxedo) setting the smooth pace for the evening with the Liam providing the finale which brought everyone up and dancing. Another successful evening for this hard working charity group – well done to everyone.

COME FLY WITH ME As long as we haven’t double booked your seat, as long as we like the look of you, as long as your wearing the correct T’ shirt . O! and yes, as long as we dont want your seat for our staff !

It could be said we had all been tranquilly going though life without any particular attention being paid to seating problems on flights until recently when a slightly built 69-year-old VietnameseAmerican doctor, David Dao, was unceremoniously and physically dragged-off (literally) a United Airways flight in Chicago. This simply because the airline decided they wanted his seat for a crew member who was travelling (as a passenger himself) to connect with another flight. The horrendous incident was captured on video footage taken by other passengers with their mobile phones. This footage of Dao’s treatment, injuries and humiliation went viral throughout the world – a shocked audience of millions watched as David Dao screamed in pain as he was dragged along the floor of the aisle by three burly security guards. He suffered lost teeth, a broken nose and concussion. His bloodied face and torn clothing bore witness to his treatment – Mr Dao had correctly purchased a ticket, on arrival was shown to his seat, but then a few minutes before departure it was decided his seat was needed for a member of the airline staff – no explanation, just his immediate removal was ordered. This hostile occurrence suddenly opened the worlds windows to other

similar cases, passengers it seemed were not as safe as they thought – buying a ticket, arriving at the airport and being seated on your flight is now no guarantee that you will actually set off to your destination – beware the flight attendant who wanders down the aisle counting the passengers – it could be you next! The airline has since admitted responsibility and said that it had been ‘a mistake of epic proportions’ and have now reached an undisclosed financial settlement with Mr Dao. Presumably he can afford to buy his own jet now? Fear of Flying. Fear of Flying was once the irrational fear that some people suffered every time they had to fly. Their fear was that the airplane would suddenly fall out of the sky or crash into the side of a mountain and they would die a scary and terrible death. These days ‘Fear of Flying’ has taken on a whole new meaning – it is no longer irrational but very real. It is the fear of being embarrassed and thrown off the plane and removed from a seat that you have booked and paid for. It is the fear that you may make a mistake when booking your flight, choose to pay in the wrong currency or forget to print your flight confirmation, or forget to take it with you in order to board the plane. All of these simple things can lead to confrontation and cost you hundreds or even thousands of pounds in charges for hotels and re-booked flights. Having to pay a surprise surcharge after you have

paid - is the latest twist in the ‘Flying Circus’ that some of the budget airlines seem to have recently created. As a passenger you must have your wits about you to keep on top of the ever-changing airline rules. Constantly changing hand luggage sizes or suitcase allowances are just some of the difficulties - and they change dramatically between the different airlines.

The amazing Flying Circus The flying circus begins with major airlines such as Ryan air and British Airways, both at the centre of allegations - which obviously all deny - that they split up families travelling together to panic them into paying up to twenty pounds per person extra each way for allocated seats. Martyn James, the spokesperson of the independent on-line complaints service, Resolver, says, “Airlines which put people through this ‘decision making circus’ need to bear in mind that their customers

are only a click away from a competitor. Something has got to be done to end the series of indignities and stress people face just to book a flight.” But if you do not want to risk the airlines random seat allocation then there is no alternative, you must pay their extra charges, something seriously to take into account when researching flight prices. Whether it is extra legroom, a wider seat, switching seats or sitting together, charges mount for those who want to select a certain level of assurance. Charges seem to range from seven to fifty pounds, depending on the airline and cabin class. Changing a seat is free with some airlines as part of a higher ticket price, while others; such as BA’s standard ticket charge a fee of seven pounds even to switch to a neighbouring seat. BA is currently facing a huge backlash from its passengers after forcing them to pay extra for the guarantee of sitting with their family on flights. Angry passengers complain that they are being split up from their friends and family as they head off on holiday. Obviously the worst effected are the cheaper tickets (no such thing as a free lunch, as the saying goes!). On longer flights it can cost up to twenty pounds each to make sure you sit with your loved one. Seats by the emergency exit (extra leg room) can cost fifty pounds to reserve. The BA policy was first introduced some six years ago but passengers are now complaining about the policy on social media, as the airline also faces a backlash for scraping free sandwiches on short haul flights and for its current plans to reduce leg room on some routes. BA adds that its computer system randomly allocates Continued overleaf

seats for those who do not pay extra. It claims it aims to sit family and friends together but those who have bought basic fares with only hand luggage (more about hand luggage later) – are given the lowest priority! The row will fuel more criticism that under its new Spanish boss Alex Cruz, BA is becoming just an expensive version of a budget airline. Its reputation has already been badly bruised by last months IT shut down, which grounded hundreds of flights and led to tens of thousands being stranded. A BA spokesman has said, “We can never guarantee passengers will be seated together, especially on busy flights. Passengers can choose to pay to select specific seats in advance if they wish to do so. Former Rolling Stones wife easyJettisoned

to soak up some sun and was due to return with the budget airline on Tuesday night, but she found herself stranded when her flight was overbooked and she was one of the unlucky ones who did not get a seat. Jo had bought her home in Murcia Spain, as well as one in Miami, Florida after her 6.5 million pound quickie divorce settlement from Ronnie. She now runs the Jo Wood brand of organic beauty products. Once home Jo also vented her furious anger by appearing on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ telling the whole nation of her humiliation and despair at being left stranded by the easyJet airline A spokesman for easyJet said: “We were sorry to hear of Ms Wood’s experience and would like to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the overbooking of her fight from Murcia to London Gatwick. “Whilst there was one seat available, we understand that she wanted to fly with her travel companion. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get them on an alternative easyJet flight that evening and Ms Wood made alternative arrangements to travel back to the UK.” Jo was later compensated seven hundred and forty seven pounds to cover flight costs and taxi’s. Celebrity wonders how Mr and Mrs Ordinary would have fared in similar circumstances?

Jo Wood and former husband Ronny Wood

Celebrity status has definitely proven to be no assurance of keeping your pre-booked airline seat! Jo Wood, the ex-wife of Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie Wood was left stranded in Spain after being booted off an easyJet flight. This is just one of the recent incidents of passengers not being allowed to fly even though they have purchased valid tickets, been assigned seat numbers and received confirmation emails. Jo was left furious and upset when she was booted off her easyJet flight on her way home from a holiday break. Instead of a care free flight home, the 62 year old was left stranded at an airport after her the flight had apparently been overbooked by the airline. Taking to Twitter, the presenter then decided to share her woes with her 12,500 followers. Saying, “Thrown off of easyjet because they had overbooked .” Jo attached a snap of herself with her hair scraped back and wearing sunglasses, she certainly did not look if she was impressed with the service. She then snapped another picture of herself, appearing to be crying as she held up a newspaper with the headlines describing another couple booted off a different flight, Jo added: “Just read this in the paper, so I’m not the only one to have my seat given away as I was just trying to get home!” Jo was booked to fly home after her holiday break

All this comes just a few days after easyJet turfed off another British couple from a flight and told them that the next available flight was not until four days time. Manoj aged 38, and Viddha, 35, had paid 628 pounds for the flights from Luton to Catalania in Scicily but claim that staff ordered them to get off. EasyJet has since apologised to the couple and said that they would be providing additional training ? You’re going to prison - children will be taken into care Yet another recent story published tells of a family who were dramatically kicked off a Delta Airlines flight and told that their children could be taken into care after they refused to give up their two year old-son’s seat for another passenger who was on the waiting list. Brian and Brittany Schear from California were threatened with prison after being told that standby passengers on the Delta service from Hawaii to Los Angeles had priority over their toddler. The Schear family boarded the plane from Maui with their two children aged one and two, after initially buying an extra seat for their teenage son who had caught an earlier flight home. Never the less they wanted to keep the seat that they had purchased and use it, with a child safety seat for their two-year-old. Mr

Issue 108 | Celebrity | 39

Schear was told that his car seat plan broke Federal Aviation administration rules, despite the fact that it had already been accepted on the outward journey. It was now that the family were threatened with prison. The family posted a phone-video of the incident on YouTube. On the video a crew member can be heard telling Mr Schear, “So this is a federal offence. You and your wife could be in jail and your kids will be in foster care.” Mr Shear replied, “I bought that seat… now you’re saying that you’re going to give that away to someone else when I paid for that seat? That’s not right!” Even though it was after midnight the Shears and their two very young children were then removed from the aircraft and had to find themselves a hotel and buy tickets for a flight the next day – Mr. Schear said, “I am so angry.” Delta who said that the flight was not overbooked, apologised and said it had offered compensation. Hens kicked off Mallorca Jet over T-shirt Slogan Life’s a bitch… then you don’t fly. A hen party was hauled off a flight because their T-shirts bore the logo ‘Bitches On Tour’. Bride to be Emma Green, 35, and 17 pals were removed from the Jet2 flight to Mallorca after police and airline staff deemed the slogan offensive. The women aged between 35 and 60 had to fork out an extra 2,500 pounds to book five flights from different airports to get on their four day break. Social worker Emma said the hen-do in the party resort of Magaluf “had been ruined.” She added “Part of me doesn’t even want to get married now. I just feel that something will end up going wrong on the day.” The hens, from Leicester were told to change or cover up as they checked in at East Midlands Airport. They put on jackets to go through security but the issue was raised again once they had boarded. The hen/party group were told by staff that there was a ‘bad behaviour’ crackdown in the current security alert. Hen, Lauren Clark said: “They pretty much marched us off two by two and told us that we would have to pay for new flights. “We hadn’t been drinking and we weren’t being noisy let alone rowdy. We’re not a group of lager louts, we are all respectable working mums.” Emma who is due to marry fiancé Aaron Bateman, 44, in August added, “ The police looked bewildered by it all, I think they thought it was ridiculous. We are just gutted that it came to this.” A jet2.com spokeswoman said: “They were repeatedly told to cover up, including by the police which they repeatedly ignored so Jet2 were left with no other choice but to remove them from the aircraft.”

‘Bond Girl’ Britt Ekland And A Dog Named Bowie They had just settled down to enjoy their first flight together but Brit Ekland’s trip with her beloved dog – called David Bowie ran into heavy turbulence before they even left the airport. Britt Ekland was furious after she and her dog were kicked off a flight from Los Angeles to Stockholm after a ‘clerical error’ meant that their seats were double booked. After the pair were ‘booted off ‘ the KLM plane the 74 year old star and her canine companion were instead forced to get an AirFrance flight a few hours later. The former Bond girl had booked two separate seats for her and her new rescue-home dog on the Monday flight, but KLM were unable to find a record of the booking despite having previously sent Miss Ekland confirmation. When someone else came to sit in Bowie’s seat, the duo were politely asked to leave as the Swedish star was unwilling to fly without her pet. The furious Miss Ekland took to Instagram to post a photo of Bowie on his seat moments before the one-year-old mongrel was turfed off She captioned the nap ‘The flight that never was! Bumped off @KLM and put on @airfrance instead!!!! Not nice behaviour of @KLM’. The next day she took to Instagram again to express her displeasure. Showing off a haul of collectable miniature houses given out each flight to KLM ‘s business class passengers, she wrote: ‘In case you thought I used @KLM casually this shelf of business class “gifts” shows that I made 9 business class (return) trips between LAX/Stockholm so I don’t feel that @KLM after having been booted out of yesterday’s flight are loyal to their passengers and this will be thrown away, sad as they are so pretty but out they go, no mercy!’

Actress Brit Ekland with James Bond (Roger Moore)

A source said, ‘It was all rather unsettling for both Bowie and Britt, not to mention embarrassing. Britt has always been very loyal to the airline so she hoped they would be able to find them somewhere to sit, but the plane was pretty full. Continued overleaf

40 | Celebrity | Issue 108

In the end KLM admitted it was their error and paid for Britt and David Bowie to fly with another carrier an hour later.’ A spokesman for Miss Ekland confirmed that the Dutch carrier had accepted liability and paid for the new flight. Don’t forget to print off your Boarding Pass. Ryanair can charge 50 euros or - 50 pounds in the UK - to customers who forget to print out their boarding cards. It is a hefty charge and one American passenger was so outraged when told that he had to pay the at Brussels airport that he reduced a member of staff to tears with a seven-minute rant shouting, “You told me to wait and you told me that I had to pay 50 euros for a flight that I’ve already checked in on. It’s absolutely ridiculous.” When another passenger intervened and told him to ‘stop harassing the staff member’ the furious man turned on him screaming: “Mind your own business baldy. Sit down old man. Mind your own business fatso. Get on a treadmill man. You need a break, you out of shape donut eating bald piece of crap.” The irate passenger later posted his video on website LiveLeak, along with a caption against the ‘mob tendencies’ he had faced, adding: “Is it because I am black?

mind of Sherlock Homes to wind your way through the tangled maze of different Airline rules and regulations. Daylight Robbery “I was billed 34 pounds for paying in euros by error”. Vee Pitchley thought she had a bargain when she bought two tickets to Warsaw in Poland for her tennis player son Tom, 17, and a companion with low-cost airline Wizz Air. She was invoiced 265 pounds confirmed in an email – which she paid with her credit card but when she checked her bank statement, she found her account had been debited by 299 pounds. When she contacted the customer helpline – costing 1.10p a minute she was told she had paid the bill in euros and therefore incurred conversion fees. When Wizz Air investigated, it found that Vee had accidentally pressed the wrong button on the payments page and chosen euros. The help desk told her that the extra cost was written in its terms and conditions – but the deal was buried away. Like other airlines, Wizz sets its own exchange rate using its own exchange conversion – where the charge to the customer is usually higher than on the open market – plus a fixed fee of a few pounds. Wizz Air has now agreed to refund Vee the charge ‘as a gesture of goodwill’. Luggage in the hold

Prices for luggage carried in the hold vary enormously, as do weight and size limits. Always check before you fly. You could end up paying between ten pounds or twenty pounds extra per kilo. Also always book hold luggage in advance as rates escalate at the check in desk and gate Know Your Rights

Last night Ryanair said it was ‘looking into the matter’, adding: ‘We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour.’ Booking a flight used to be so simple – choose the destination and class of travel, select a seat and relax knowing that the price of your baggage is included along with some food and drink on board. Now you have to be a mathematical genius with the

A spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority said the rights of passengers denied boarding, including overbooking, are protected under European law. “Passengers are entitled to a minimum level of compensation, and must be offered an alternative flight, or ‘re-route’, at the earliest opportunity or at a date that suits them, or offered a full refund, if the passenger no longer wishes to fly. If you want to complain about a problem that relates to Flights & Flight Delays, you can also use Resolver to make the process simpler. If you’ve had a flight cancelled or delayed more than three hours, you may be entitled to compensation - and it’s possible to claim via Resolver for free.

Thinking about it! One of Jo Woods comments on her twitter page after being refused her flight (tickets and all confirmations received weeks earlier) is probably more significant than she first thought – she is quoted as saying “I reckon it’s because we had no suitcase luggage, we were an easy target to be removed. They must have thought, ‘She won’t complain, she looks very sweet, she only has hand luggage so we don’t have to drag her suitcases from the hold, that’s fine, we’ll pick on that girl!” The truth could be, although always denied by airlines, that if refusing a passenger because of overbooking or actually removing a passenger who has already boarded then one with hand luggage only is a far easier target than one with a suitcase in the hold, which can mean an hour or more delay, identifying the suitcase and then removing it from the aircraft? During all our years of world travelling we ourselves have only ever missed one flight, which was an inter-connecting flight on the Spanish mainland to photograph Rod Stewart in concert. We were two of eight passengers who were advised of the flight gate number and asked to stay near to the desk opposite this gate number. As the time got nearer to departure we queried the time and the lack of other waiting passengers but were advised not to worry – suddenly with only minutes to go we were advised that the gate number had been changed – with our panicking fellow passengers we started the long, desperate run towards the new departure gate only to be advised the airplane doors were now closed and therefore we had missed the flight. Also, although we did not realise the significance at the time, we were advised that the flight was full anyway. How? There should have been at least eight empty seats. So where were our seats? Why had no one advised us or called us for our flight? All eight of us could not have missed a call – totally mystifying, although when we all got together we realised we all had one thing in common – we were all ‘hand luggage only’ passengers! So as we said earlier, when comfortably seated on your flight and the stewardess comes down the isle counting the number of passengers – be careful – it could be you! - Welcome to The Flying Circus

BOOM BOOM FOR BECKER

Lilly and Boris dining in Puerto Portals

World Champion Tennis Player, a tennis court legend, the youngest player to ever win Wimbledon and the millionaire heartthrob who attracted more female television viewers than any other tennis star in history – Boris Becker, has been declared officially bankrupt! The three times Wimbledon champion, famously nicknamed ‘Boom Boom’ because of his powerful tennis serve pleaded unsuccessfully with bankruptcy court officials for one months delay in order for him to settle his three and a quarter million pound debt to a private bank (Arbuthnot Latham & Co). Becker’s lawyers insist he has the means to pay the debt by remortgaging his 62 acre estate in Mallorca. Becker has been a popular figure on the island although has had several run-ins with the Spanish Courts in recent years. In 2012 a Spanish court judge ordered Beckers property in Majorca to be auctioned to pay a debt of quarter of a million pounds, which he owed a local landscape gardening company. In a separate civil court hearing, also in Palma, a judge ordered him to hand a further third of a million pounds to a local building firm that complained that bills for carpentry, electrical and plumbing jobs, and the laying of a basketball court, also went unpaid. Yet Becker had in his younger years amassed a fortune of tens of millions of pounds after first winning Wimbledon aged 17. But it was his action off the tennis court that has no doubt left him millions in debt and facing the prospect of Exclusive photographs of Boris Becker by Ken & Angela Ross

We have personally photographed, dined with and supported him at several tennis tournaments so it is regrettable to see someone who is so popular, with so much talent and style being brought down over such huge financial problems. He has (although now unfortunately rumoured to be in trouble) a good and stable marriage to model Lilly Becker who was always at his side since their marriage some eight years ago. They are a popular couple, sociable but also private, Lilly probably being the one that brings the special sparkle and charisma to their relationship.

even having to abandon his Wimbledon commentating duties. Over recent years his debts have increased, with possibly bad business judgements and a series of expensive personal relationship break-ups Beckers fortune seems to have all but disappeared. In 2001 he was landed with divorce and paternity settlements totalling nearly twenty million to his first wife, Barbara, and Angela Ermakova, the Russian model who had his baby following a brief encounter in the broom cupboard of a London restaurant It was there, off the staircase of the Park Lane eatery Nobu, that Becker had a extremely brief but amorous encounter with Angela (whom he had never met before and still claims it was the most expensive five seconds of his life) which resulted in the birth of a daughter, with a pay-off costing him over two million pounds plus an undisclosed monthly maintenance settlement. Jokingly his nickname then was changed by fans from ‘Boom Boom’ to ‘Broom Broom’. Divorce from his American wife Barbara naturally followed quickly, costing him a staggering eleven million in cash plus all legal fees totalling over a further two million. Becker also had to grant ownership of their main marital home, a huge luxury property in Miami, to his wife. Add to this his maintenance support payments for their children – the costs were never ending.

Following the bankruptcy declaration it is difficult to understand what will happen to Becker’s remaining assets and property, which could be seized immediately and disposed of to pay his creditors. Whether Becker can sell or remortgage his sprawling nine bedroom luxury estate in Mallorca in time will be interesting to see, certainly the British Bankruptcy Court could apply to seize the estate. Becker who has vowed to pay off the debt and have the bankruptcy annulled said: “It’s up to me to prove that I am right. I accepted the challenge and I am going to play until the very last ball.” From the man who would throw himself headlong across the tennis court if it meant saving just one point, we would expect no less. But beating the bankruptcy court is another matter and unless this sadly diminished former champion can serve one last ace – a cheque for three Million pounds – then the Boris boom is possibly over.

Sports Quizz, fund raising event organised by Ivan Lythgoe on behalf of Parkinson sufferers - Ivan centre with Chris (right).

Parkinson’s Group amalgamate - ‘Together They Are Stronger’ Not only is Ivan Lythgoe one of the most popular figures in and around Calvia, he also suffers from Parkinson’s disease which is why he formed the organisation ‘Parkinson Support group Mallorca’. This month Ivan successfully made the challenging task of joining forces with the ‘Parkinson’s Association of the Balearics’. Ivan’s motivation is to increase the awareness of the early symptoms of Parkinson’s and to educate suffers as to the different ways it can be fought. Sadly there is as yet no cure, it remains a disease that cannot be healed but it is a disease that can be held back. Whilst the medical profession are constantly searching for and developing new treatments, one of the main aspects of fighting the disease is constant exercise. From our own knowledge of Ivan, he is a perfect example of a man who will not give in. He is active, charismatic and with the support of his amazing wife Chris, lives life to the full. There are never complaints; in fact he is usually the first man to enquire on the health of others - a true ‘trooper’ of extraordinary strength and character. TOGETHER THEY ARE STRONGER By amalgamating together, the organisation hopes to further more awareness and provide more help and advice to sufferers. With the new motto of their joint organisation being ‘Together they are Stronger’ they are now planning more events to not only raise funds but to bring together sufferers and their family and friends. There first actions of this joint venture will be towards the start-up of a multi-lingual drop-in centre based at Son Espases Hospital and they are now looking for volunteers who can offer a few hours a week to help.
