LETTER’S TO EDITOR Dear CS, I am 48 years old and still have long hair. Do you think woman over 40 should have long hair? Tracey from Cape Town
Dear CS, Hi, is there a basic name/term for layers? One stylist called them ‘soft layers’ and another one called them ‘long-layering’. Jade from PE.
Dear Tracey
Dear Jade
Oh defiantly! As long as you keep your hair in tip top shape. Have regular treatments and trims. You can update your style by either having a fringe or the front of your hair layered. Sandra Bullock, 50 and Julia Roberts, 46 are perfect examples of beauties who still have long hair. Turn to pages 32 and 33 for more long hair styles. CS Team

HOT & TRENDY STYLES FOR MEN
Does the South African hot weather make you want to laze around the pool all day and sip on cocktails at night? With our beautiful weather this time of the year, it’s easy to forget about your hair, as most of the girls at Celeb Styles magazine tie their hair up in a bun, as that’s a perfect style that can be worn during the day and at night. This time of the year make sure you get a good treatment as with the sun rays being so harsh, you don’t want to end up with dry hair. Speak to your stylist who will recommend a good treatment or turn to pages 38 and 39 to see new hair products on the market. Summer is also the time of the year where we socialise a lot more as family and friends come together. Why not change your style this summer? I promise you, you will get your friends talking! Be a copycat and copy a celeb style, change your colour and get a new haircut, be inspired by our celebrity looks on pages 50 to 53, you won’t be sorry. It’s our first Christmas issue; we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did putting the magazine together for you.

Rihanna is a star in every sense of the word! While
she’s been compared to Beyoncé for years, Rihanna has proven time and time again that she has her own gorgeous look and sex appeal. Currently one of the hottest stars on the planet, RiRi is a pinup for men and women. While she’s getting her claws into every man in Hollywood, she’s making women envious of her sexy curves, natural beauty and oh-so-fabulous style. We take a look at how she does it....
a h i R ST
FASHION There’s no denying the fact that Rihanna is a fashionista. She’s not only one of the most stylish women in Hollywood and beyond, but she knows how to make smart and casual look fabulous. Always surrounded by paparazzi, RiRi manages to grab attention in her sometimes revealing, sometimes funky outfits, which have men drooling and women green with envy. Always showing off her curvy body (in a bikini or on the red carpet) Rihanna knows what suits her — and uses it
6
to her advantage. And while she knows how to flaunt it, Rihanna knows how to have fun with fashion too, which is why she’s admired by young and old. Making it on to the bestdressed lists (and yes, at times the worst) the star can put any outfit together and make any look stand out. The best part is, you never know what she’ll be wearing next — from a tuxedo dress, to a black tailored jumpsuit or Manolo Blahniks, she’s a favourite when it comes to fashion and we’re always dying to see more!

BEAUTY It takes more than just good skin to get the Barbadian-beauty’s chic look. According to make-up artist Mylah Morales, the star has a few products she swears by. Rihanna uses Per-fekt Beauty Lip Perfection Gel in Vine on her lips. It includes alpha lipoic acid Vitamins A & E, hyaluronic microspheres, peptides and jojoba, to brighten up her look. The gloss also doubles as a lip treatment, thanks to its plumping and soothing properties. The coloured gel contains alpha lipoic acid and vitamins A and E to enhance the appearance of the skin for an airbrushed flawless look and
When it comes to her skin, RiRi reportedly swears by Perfection Gel in Decadent, which she uses as a primer.
offers an alternative to traditional powder, primer and concealer. On her body, the singer smooths on Body Perfection Gel in Exotic to give her honey toned skin a gorgeous glow. The glimmer gel contains hyaluronic filling spheres, ceramides and shea butter and is a handy alternative to bronzer and fake tan. Being in the public eye, and looking fabulous at all times is not easy. Rihanna’s complexion has been described as marblelike, flawless and impossibly perfect — and that’s thanks to some attention to detail, an awesome make-up artist, and great products, of course!
While not the skinniest star in Tinseltown, RiRi is without a doubt one of the sexiest. Her curvaceous body gets heads turning wherever she goes. So how does she stay in shape? According to sources, her secret weapon is the Five Factor Diet. Rihanna lost a lot of weight last year when she went on the Five Factor Diet and started working out with Los Angelesbased trainer Harley Pasternak, say insiders. The exercise and eating plan is based on fives — five small meals a day, five days of exercise made up of five phases, each five minutes long, each meal has five specific criteria and the plan allows you five cheat days in five weeks. The star also cycles, jogs and enjoys her jumping jacks as part of her cardio routine. And because she’s always on the go, sources say a lot of her training gets done in her hotel rooms. When on tour she reportedly works out three days a week for 25 minutes. When back home she increases it to

five days a week, doing cardio for at least 30 minutes. Rihanna has also admitted that she prefers to run on the treadmill and dance as part of her workout. On being asked, what she likes most and least about her body, she says: “I like my bum, the most and I keep working at it as I want it to be perfect. It makes my clothes look good — and guys like it!”She also adds: “I like my legs, the least. I’m insecure about them. Everyone wants to have slim, perfectly-toned legs and I’m the same. I don’t want my legs to bulk up so I do a lot of cardio.” Rihanna eats a lot of carbs, protein, fibre, fats and sugar-free drinks. She says she needs a lot of carbs because she gets weak if she doesn’t eat them. “Carbs are the enemy but if I go three days without them, I start getting weak,” she says adding “If my trainer had her way, I’d eat small meals every three hours, but I sometimes only eat once or twice a day.”
Which star’s secrets would you like revealed? E-mail us at stories@apcpublishers.co.za and we will investigate.

extra volume.
Valcro rollers are perfect to give your hair volume. Just make sure you hair is dry when you use rollers. Take sections of your hair and wrap your hair around the roller – blast each roller for a few seconds with your hairdryer. Let the rollers cool down and remove, you will have amazing volume.
CELEB STYLES | November / December 2014 |

Use body foaming mousse on damp hair, before you blow-dry your hair starting at your roots.

Use a large round brush when blow drying your hair – start at the roots and wrap small sections and make sure you start drying your hair from your crown.
Before you go to bed, spray your roots with dry shampoo and tie your hair on top of your head in a messy bun. In the morning when you wake up, loosen your hair, shake your head and see loads of volume.

Foam rollers are also a great tool to get volume, and you can sleep with them in.
Make sure your hair is not oily – as it will just make your hair look flat.
Your hairdryer should be on cool when you blow-dry your hair, once you’ve dried your sections, blast it with cold air for a few seconds to set the style and seal the cuticles.

If you are blow drying your hair for a night out, do it in sections, starting from the nape of your neck and working upwards. Once completed, spray your whole head with Moroccanoil Strong Flexible Hold Hairspray and let it dry.
You must use the right hair product. If you are using the wrong shampoos and conditioners your hair can weigh down and make it look flat and limp. Use volumizing shampoos, speak to your salon.
Blow-dry your hair upside down – flip your head and blast the hot air from the nape of your neck to the crown. Don’t forget to focus on blowing your roots.
Useing curling irons or even your flat iron can give your hair some volume. Curling thongs are the best, as you know wavy hair always looks more voluminous. Don’t use your irons too much as they can damage your hair.
13
When you condition your hair, keep it away from your roots and only apply it to the middle and ends.

A Work
Of Art By Vanessa Papas
Meet
Roberto Ferrel — an artistic barber who is turning heads around the world. Founded in 2012, Rob The Original Barber has given new meaning to the words ‘hair art’. Whether you’re young or old, a fan of poets or politicians, or back Manchester United or Liverpool, clients are guaranteed life-life portraits of their favourite celebrities, athletes and even loved family members — literally shaved into the back of their heads! Roberto was born in Los Angeles California and grew up in Tijuana Mexico.”Growing up I had a big family and we didn’t have much but we were very happy,” he says, speaking to Celeb Styles from his Barber in San Antonio, Texas. “I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. Everyone in my family always said that I would be an artist when I grew up and so I thought I would likely land up doing something like photography or graphic design. Drawing just comes naturally to me — it’s a gift from the Man up above. I never before pictured myself as a barber though, it kind of just came my way.” Roberto started cutting his own hair about 10 years ago to save money and that’s when he realised how creative he could be with a pair of clippers and some imagination! “When I first started barbering I never imagined worldwide success. Just a couple of years ago I was in Vegas
wondering if my art would be enough to support my family. Now it’s carried me beyond what I ever thought imaginable. I enjoy what I do because I can still use my drawing skills with portraits and designs. My wife Tiffany and I have a son Angel who we love very much. They are very supportive and proud of what I do. I’ve always wanted to stand out and do something different and here I am.” What exactly is ‘hair art’, you may ask? “Any creative form of hair style,” says Rob. “Hair art is a global thing right now because everyone wants to wear something new and different. “In his box of tricks are trimmers, combs, clippers, straight razor, and eyeliner pencils. The hairstyle depictions usually take about two hours to complete and Rob uses one hand to hold a digital photo on a phone or iPad and the other to style the design. He first carves an outline with a trimmer and then shaves it | November / December 2014 | CELEB STYLES

with a razor. The designs even include colour, which he creates with eye and lip liner. The hair designs last about two weeks with basic haircuts starting at around R200 and more intricate styles and portraits costing between R1 500 and R2 000. “During the World Cup I did many soccer players portraits but the most requested one was Lionel Messi,” says Rob. “Tupac Shakur is my favourite portrait to do because he is my favourite rapper artist and I am very inspired by his poetry. The craziest design I have ever done would be the 3D Bob Marley portrait. When I draw hair art I love to listen to my favourite music. Before I start cutting a portrait on my client’s head, it’s very important to find the right placement (flattest side of the head). I like to do hair art on 1.5 cut down level. I focus on one section of the portrait, for example the nose, and then start carving every shape that surrounds it. It’s like putting together a puzzle. You can only do so much with hair, so the eyeliner perfects the picture and makes it look realistic.” Rob says what he enjoys most about this business is that he gets to use art on every client whether it is a regular haircut or a portrait. “I see between five to 10 clients a day so that’s about 30 clients in a week. The salon is so busy and I’m glad that I have never had to deal with an unhappy customer.” When asked what the hardest thing about being in the hair industry is, he replies, ‘keeping up with trends’. “Style constantly changes and you have to be on top of

CELEB STYLES | November / December 2014 |
your game all the time or you’ll be left behind. To keep up on new hairstyle trends I’m always on social media and the photo sharing app, Instagram (I have more than 70 000 followers). That’s how I stay connected with the world and it motivates me to do my own styles. My motto is ‘hard work and dedication’. I always set a goal for myself and once I reach that goal I set another one. Achieving is a never ending quest for me.” The next thing on his bucket list? To open a Barber And Hair Art College. We say, watch this space! To see more of Rob’s creative hair art, follow @robtheoriginal on Instagram.

BEAUTY SECRETS!
From
basic beauty dos (wear sunscreen every day) to definite don’ts (avoid popping pimples), as well as
obscure secrets (beer and vinegar for hair?), you’ll find advice to keep you as beautyful as ever. Here are some smart tips that make looking good easier and faster.
l Everyone loves a spa day! A quick, easy and cheaper indulgence than a trip to the spa is to put your favourite lotion in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Make sure the oils in your lotion don’t separate and that it isn’t too hot. Apply it on to your skin and enjoy!
To stop eyeliner from crumbling, a quick fix is to freeze eyeliner for ten minutes before applying. It should glide along your lash line seamlessly after that.
l Out of shaving cream? Use conditioner as a substitute. Conditioner will soften the hair on your legs making it easier to shave and it will leave your skin feeling extra silky.
Okay, we know this sounds crazy, but rinsing your

water.
l For curlier, flirtier lashes, heat up your lash curler with a hair dryer for a few seconds before curling them.

l You
probably need less eye shadow than you think. Start with a tiny bit of product on the brush and work it outward to create a soft smoky eye.
l The trick to achieving chiseled celebrity features is to contour. Angelina Jolie cheekbones, anyone? Your face is three dimensional, so applying foundation in a single shade will only make your face appear flat. Add a highlighter to areas of your face that would usually catch light and create shadows to emphasize your jaw line and cheekbones.
l Massage an ice cube over your face until it melts. Do it every night before bed to keep fat cells, acne and wrinkles under control. l Before applying nail polish, wipe nails with an acetone-based cleanser. Cleaning excess dirt, oil or moisturizer from your nails will ensure that the polish lasts longer. l Rinsing your hair with a mixture of chamomile tea and lemon juice, instead of conditioner can permanently lighten your tresses. Allow your hair to dry while sitting in the sun or use a blow dryer — the heat will lighten your locks.
Velvety Cream SPF 50 (50ml), Vichy
R279 l Wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine. Even when it’s cloudy outside. Around eighty per cent of the sun’s UV rays pass through the clouds.
28
CELEB STYLES | November / December 2014 |
l Potatoes can help lighten dark under eye circles and de-puff eyes. First, wash and peel a potato. Cut two slices and place one on each eye for 10 minutes. Lay down, relax and let the potatoes work their magic. l Everyone loves walking out of the salon with a fresh blow out, but how do you prevent your locks from going limp in the days after? Your hair naturally secretes oil so be two a step ahead and spray your roots with dry shampoo. It will absorb any moisture before it weighs down your hair. Also, touch up your blow out the next day by using a hair dryer and a round brush. It will give you an instant boost of volume. l Adding extra oomph to lashes amps up the glam instantly. Apply glue on your falsies using a Q-tip. Then with tweezers, place your false lashes as close to your lash line as possible. Let your lashes dry for a minute before you add a coat of mascara. l You’ve heard it before: don’t pop pimples! Rather apply a bit of toothpaste to the zit before bed and wash it off with warm water in the morning. Toothpastes draws impurities out of clogged pores and dries the skin which shrinks the pimple. l No Makeup Remover? Body or hand lotion works just as well in a pinch! Even on tough to remove mascara. l If you have visible sun damage, you’re probably guilty of skipping the SPF — be sure to apply sunscreen religiously, but to help even out your complexion, try this trick: three times a week, gently rub a (washed) strawberry on discoloured areas. Keep the juice on your skin for two minutes before rinsing. The fruit acids may help lighten dark patches.

BEAUTIFUL
KINKS
Treat your African hair well and with respect.
For
a long time, we were meant to believe that African kinky hair does not grow long. And we were not wrong in our beliefs because indeed, it never seemed to grow long. I remember as a young girl, if one had hair down to her shoulders, we all saw her as the one with long hair. But now things have changed. Armed with the information all over the internet, from friends and family, we have come to realise that African kinky hair does grow long as long as it is treated well and with respect. Oh yes there are T’s & C’s attached to it. You see, kinky hair is fragile. And as if that is not enough, it mostly has high porosity and tends to lose moisture very quickly. And as if that was

not too much already, due to its coily nature, the sebum produced by the scalp to lubricate the hair, has a hard time trying to reach the tips of the strands leading to much dryer ends and with all this put together, even the strongest hair would find it difficult to stay put and not split or break. Don’t dismay though. Let me tell you something, there is help now, not a cure for kinky hair but help to live with it. Not that I am equating it to a chronic disease or something we have to endure, no, not at all. We are all aware of the abundance beauty in natural kinky hair. Its versatility, soft fluffy nature and just it being different. It is beautiful in so many different ways, more than I could even start to mention here. So now, kinky

haired heads, the T’s & C’s are listed below. l Moisture balance is key. Seeing there is not much you can do about the shape of the hair strand nor its structure, one thing you can do is make sure the hair is well hydrated. Kinky hair needs moisture so step your moisturizing techniques with water as the main player. l Low manipulation. What happens if you keep handling something fragile, say a piece of fabric? It will tear in no time. That’s the same with fragile hair. Over manipulation does no good but harm to our strands leading to chronic breakage. What, with the hand in hair syndrome? I know I am guilty of that too. But discipline when it comes to styling your hair has big rewards in the long term l Stay away from harsh chemicals or hair dyes. If you can’t, then you should be well aware of the consequences and be willing to do the extra work needed to keep that hair on your head.
SUN KISSED
HAIR
Your New Natural Hair Look for Summer.
Ask your Wella colourist for the new ultimate natural looking hair, created foil-free.
Natural, sun kissed hair looks are always in demand by women – it is that younger, frivolous touch of multi-dimensional colour, that makes you look both fresh and groomed. Revealed by Trend Vision 2014, the Wella Professionals hair fashion forecast, the Urban Native trend movement predicts a broad variety of natural looks already heavily featured on the catwalks. Stone-washed blondes identified by Wella Professionals and Josh Wood within the Urban Native trend movement reflect the muted, petal colours seen on the catwalk, as designers such as Peter Som, seek to lift the spirits and propose more relaxed, look of ‘unintentional imperfection’ for SS 14. Pretty pure tones have been replaced by softer palettes that showcase stone washed blended hues.
Foils vs Freehand – What Is The Difference?
Stay away from heat styling tools. Once in a while should not harm your hair especially if you use heat protectants. But too much heat is not good for kinky hair. l Braids, twists and cornrows are very cute but if done wrong or left in for too long, they may cause unnecessary damage to your hair especially the hairline. l Keep your scalp clean as much as possible to grow healthier hair. l Hair conditioners are your best friends. Be it your leave-in or your rinse out conditioner, make sure you have enough of these every time you wash your hair. Not conditioning your hair is not an option after shampooing it. Always follow with a moisturizing conditioner, preferably one that is pH balanced if you can. l Love and enjoy your hair at every stage of your hair journey. Although you are not your hair, your hair is part of you. Nourish it. Ruth is an advocate for natural kinky hair and an entrepreneur based in Johannesburg. When she is not designing some clothing, playing with her babies, cooking a storm in the kitchen, making natural hair products or doing her hair, she blogs on natural hair care on Natural Sisters. l
The desire for sun-kissed looks or highlights is timeless. But not many salon clients know, that sun kissed looks can be achieved in two ways: with the use of foils or freehand techniques, like Balayage. Both techniques provide so-called ‘sun kissed’ look, while there is substantial difference in process and end colour result, which is easily distinguished by the expert eye of a professional colourist. With foils hair strands with the applied product are securely wrapped while they develop. The colour result is more compact and even, almost ‘stripy’, which happens, because the use of foils is a precise process, where colorist almost mathematically calculates and follows certain patterns and succession. Freehand colour process assumes the strands with the applied product are left to develop in the open air next to untreated hair, which allows soft gentle flow and graduation providing a more natural looking colour result, as if it has been created by sun, wind and sea. The hairdresser sees exactly where he wants some nuances to be lighter or deeper following the natural growth and set of the hair.
Modern Sun Kissed Look Josh Wood and his A-List clientele have always been great supporters of premium natural colour looks: “There is a softness to the result, colours are more blended rather than strategically placed as with foil. My clients want something that is totally on trend and with the feeling of the stone washed effects of Urban Native, FREELIGHTS allows me to create light effects just where I want them.” On how to make Balayage look modern Josh continues: “To really make Balayage look modern don’t overdo it. Use FREELIGHTS to add touches of sparkle and true ‘highlights’ to the finished result. Make ends a little lighter, hairlines softer to create a glow around the fav face.” | November / December 2014 | CELEB STYLES

SUPER SALO Book your appointment with all the confidence in the world as we feature top salons. StyleDiva
StyleDiva – South Africa’s leading ethnic hair retail outlet was started in 2011 after it became clear that the South African woman’s braids, weaves, wigs and accessory retail needs were not being adequately met by the market. The StyleDiva retail concept brings an upmarket look and feel, together with well trained knowledgeable staff and in store stylists providing excellent customer advice. StyleDiva brings you the right brands at affordable prices whilst always ensuring the quality, supply and service is kept consistent and reputable.
About StyleDiva’s Range Of Products
34
StyleDiva offer both normal and lace front wigs. Of the two offerings, the normal wig is usually the more affordable with a fringe and the lace front wig includes lace around the hairline which is cut on installation for a more natural look. The Lace Front Wig is gaining in popularity due to its more natural look and feel. Other products include the extremely fashionable weaves which come in different categories including synthetic, high-temp fibre and human hair. In each of these categories customers can choose from straight, yaki, wavy, curly and spiral. StyleDiva also offer a variety of pre-styled weaves in specific styles and curls. In addition, every woman needs a phondo for that ‘bad hair’ day and again StyleDiva offers a wide range of these ponies at affordable prices. www.stylediva.co.za Tel: (011) 326-3813 CELEB STYES | November / December 2014 |

Answered Your Questions
Meet our expert, Nell-Mari Oosthuizen from Sylvia Hair Emporium who answered you questions…
Q A
There are so many hair products on the market. My scalp is very dry, so I’m looking for a product that puts moisture back into my hair. Help! There are many competitive hair brands out in the market, but I personally opt for the most trusted brand Redken and they have the perfect product out called Diamond oil, that will deal with dry scalp and hair. It’s an oil that is silicon free with natural hair oils that penetrate each of the hair, fibre from the inside out. It’s a lovely oil to apply to the scalp and massage it and leave in as treatment for a day.
Q
A
A
First of all, not just any colour can be applied to any exciting colour as they could be two contrasting colour and turn out wrong. Then colour being applied to another hair colour on the hair also ultimately leaves you with a darker colour, so the result on the box will also not be achieved. The pros of purchasing box colour is obviously that its cheaper as it is self- applied, but in my opinion could cost you more to rectify in the long run. Redken’s chromatics is an ammonia free hair colour that has an oil delivery system. And will make the hair stronger and give it amazing shine.
Unfortunately relaxers and straighteners do fall into the chemical side of the spectrum, but you do get brands that have a softer effect on their hair. One brand that I feel that has a lot of research and development behind it is Mizani.
Q 42
Q
‘I’m a black lady with unmanageable hair! I’m looking for an all-natural affordable relaxer product. Can you help me out?
I have such an itchy scalp, please advise what product I should be using?
A
My hair is red and I’m looking to go a darker shade red. Can I just use a box hair colour as it’s a quick and inexpensive option? What are the pros and cons of using a box colour from Dis-chem?
I would strongly suggest Scalp relief Soothing Balance by Redken. It has Eucalyptus extract and Licorice to smooth and moisture. Also I will recommend Clear Moisture Rush mask as a treatment for itchy scalp and treat the hair.
Q
My five-year-old daughter came home with lice! I’m freaking out! How do I get rid of them?
A
See to it as a preventative measure that a child’s hair is dried off after it has been washed. Lice isn’t at all something to get worried about as it can be taken care of immediately. All pharmacies have a product called Lyclear that’s a natural head lice treatment that kills the head lice and eggs.

How To Care For Your
Hair Extensions Just-Hair specialises in all products related to 100% real human hair.
This
includes strands, wefts, clip inns and soon to be added wigs and hair pieces. Here they share the low-down on how to care for your hair extensions.
How To Shampoo Hair?
Before going and washing your hair, comb out the hair. Be gentle when wetting the hair; the hair is heavier than you might expect. Wet the hair, put shampoo over the hair. Start with the hair line, make circular movements with your fingers working towards the nape area – repeat the process a couple of times. Start at the top, with your hands on both sides, moving them zigzag towards the bottom – also repeat this process more than once. Squeeze the mid lengths and ends in a downward motion. Rinse the hair thoroughly and shampoo for the second time. [if after shampooing the head is itchy; either the client is shampooing wrong or not rinsing enough – dirt then gets trapped in-between the bond and the skin.] While rinsing tap and move the hair to make sure the water penetrates right through. Hair cannot and must not be washed over the side of the bath ever!!!! You can shampoo according to your personal preference. Shampoo until it lathers. When blow drying the hair it will be easier for you to pre section the hair. Do not turn and turn the brush when blow drying; as this will hurt and damage your hair. DO NOT flat iron the bonds!
Tips For Clients
l Products Sulphate free products are highly recommended. l Treatments Because extensions do not get moisture from your scalp it is important to do a moisture treatment every 5 washes! Products must have an acid balance of ph 5.5. Making sure that there is no residue left on the hair and that it is properly rinsed. l Styling Aid Refrain from putting styling aid on the bonds, try and keep it to the mid lengths and ends. Always use a heat protector and regularly deep cleanse the hair to get rid of any product build up. l Brushing Using a soft cushion brush, regularly brush the hair from roots to ends. Release the matted hair by easing the knots from the bonds backwards towards the scalp. l Swimming Chlorine and sea water may damage the bonds therefore it is of the utmost importance for your client to understand that she must always rinse her hair after swimming! Also they must dry at least the bond areas as this will keep the lifespan of the bonds. l Lifestyle This plays a very big role in extensions. Regular activity (such as gym, swimming and aerobics) could shorten the lifespan of the bonds since activity will cause the bonds to be in a constant damp environment.
Rebonding
Once we have removed the hair we will put it back in the box with a signed document stating how many strands has been counted as well as instructions for re-bonding. We will keep the re-bonded hair in your original box with your name on in storage until you want to reinstall the hair. If you do not collect the hair within six months of re-bonding it we will sell it off as second hand hair for half price to less fortunate ladies who want extensions.

WHAT CAUSES PRICE SPURGES?
Not all salons are created equally and various factors impact on how much you’ll pay for cuts, colours, styles, treatments and blow waves at different salons. “The main factor determining price is the experience and knowledge of the stylist,” says Freya Labuschagne of Gary Rom Hairdressing (GRH). “You will pay more if you have your hair done by someone who has been in the industry for a longer time as opposed to having it done by a junior. The products that the salon uses will also determine the prices charged. Some products are more superior than others. Where the salons are located also influence the prices. Salons located in top areas and shopping centres charge higher rates because they pay higher rent.”
TIPPING THE SCALES
Tipping isn’t a city in China but that doesn’t mean you have to do it. “Tipping of shampooists is not a tradition in South Africa as it is overseas but if you feel the shampooist or apprentice has given you a good experience and you can afford to do so, then it is always appreciated,” says Freya. “There isn’t a general going rate. In our salons the tips can be anything from R10 up to R200, depending on the client. Tipping of the stylist or owner is also not a custom and to my knowledge happens very rarely.”
DISCOUNTS & LOYALTY PROGRAMMES
There are some salons that run specials on treatments and do offer discounted rates for a treatment regime for clients with damaged locks but this is not the norm. A good salon should, however, offer complimentary (aka free) services for regular clients including trimming your fringe and shaping your bangs. “At GRH we have a loyalty programme and it is becoming more popular in the industry with many salons also offering a similar service. Five percent of each spend is automatically added to our Headstart system and this can be redeemed on services in the salons. Clients enjoy getting discount every few months and it is a nice way to reward their loyalty to your brand,” says Freya.

Reese Witherspoon spends over R7 000 on her hair a week.
PRODUSCTS: SAVE OR SPURGE? Should you splurge on salon products? “Salon products are more expensive to purchase than supermarket products but you are paying for quality,” says Freya. “Per application they are not that much more expensive because they are very concentrated so you use a lot less than you would of a supermarket product. The ingredients used in salon products are often of a better quality so the benefits are far better for your hair and the research that goes into salon products is remarkable. The important thing is to use the correct salon products. The only thing worse than a client not using salon products is using the incorrect salon products because they will then say they don’t work. Good salons offer a moisture/protein analysis to clients to determine what product the client needs.”
NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH
If you are looking for an inexpensive haircut chances are the person doing the cut won’t have a lot of experience and, as such, the haircut you get may reflect that. “If you are looking for free haircuts a lot of salons apprentices need ‘models’ to practice on so they are always looking for willing people,” says Freya. “At GRH we have such a programme where there are trainers who supervise the training session at all times and this takes place on a Tuesday afternoon between 16h00 and 18h00. Interested people can enquire at our salons. If a client has the right haircut it can save money as well as time when styling. The right haircut will not only enhance your looks but it will make your life much easier when managing the haircut and also it will last longer so you won’t need to go every three weeks for a cut because it will keep the style and still be manageable.”
Kate Hudson spends over R6 500 on her hair a week.
I HATE MY HAIR. DO I STILL HAVE TO PAY?
Speak up...before leaving the salon. If you are not happy with the results, tell the stylist as they may be able to correct your style/colour/cut. “Your colour isn’t done until you’re happy with it,” says Freya. “A good stylist will do everything in their power to ensure you leave the salon with a smile on your face – after all, you are paying for the service. Good salons should offer
MONEY SAVING TRICKS
Choose a hue closest to your natural colour if you don’t want to go to a salon every six weeks. You can go either a shade lighter or darker or stay on your own level to be sure of a natural regrowth. Full grey coverage requires a lot of maintenance and money. Rather ask your stylist to apply a few foils around the face using the balyage technique so that there won’t be a regrowth. Ask upfront what the costs will be before you agree to each hair service.
guarantees on services so that if a client is unhappy then they can come back and the salon will fix their hair free of charge. Mostly, a two week guarantee is given but in many cases the guarantee only applies to clients who use the brands of professional products the salon stocks because using the incorrect products can alter hair and influence the result.”
You don’t need to run to your hair stylist for a root touch-up. Today’s home kits can do basic grey coverage and match salon colours (provided you are not going several shades lighter). If your stylist warns you that your hair is too damaged to bleach or dye, listen to them! This will save you thousands of rands in the long run. There’s no reason why you can’t deal with your own occasional split ends at home.

CELEB STYLES | November / December 2014 |
Stars like Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba and Julianne Hough have sported gorgeous bobs this year — and they all looked fabulous with them. If you’ve never tried a short hair cut, make sure you’re ready! The long bob is flattering on most shape faces, more so on oval and long face shapes. Try not to let your stylist remove too much bulk if you have long hair — you don’t want stringy, flat hair. Tanya van Vuuren from Square Bubble Hairdressing suggests you rough dry your hair if you’re going after Julianne Hough’s look — which is a little more messy and sexy. Use a wax or mouse to create your desired look, or spray Matrix hairspray to help keep your style in place. If you’re going for the more sleek bob like Heidi’s, Tanya says: “Shampoo and condition your hair with Matrix Amplify to keep your hair light and easy to style. Blow dry your hair with a medium or large size brush and finish off with a surround shine spray to make your hair look shiny and healthy.

Short & Sexy
Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway are just some of the celebrities who chopped it all off and survived. This hairstyle allows for attention on your features. Long and oval face shapes can pull this haircut off — and while many think short hair is for older women, we say think again. It’s funky, it’s hot and it’s trending big time in Hollywood and beyond! Just ask Halle Berry who’s been sporting it for years and looking fantastic doing it. Turn to page 60 and 61 for more indepth look on how to get Jennifer’s style.

Long, Natural And Beautiful
There’s nothing like long, luscious locks — and stars like Sandra Bullock, Alessandra Ambrosio, Mila Kunis and Kim Kardashian have proven that. Be it straight or wavy, let your hair look and feel natural this summer — and if Sandra Bullock you’ve been growing it all year, enjoy flipping it from side to side while flaunting your gorgeous summer outfits too. When it comes to straight hair, Tanya shares her tips. “Shampoo your hair with Matrix sleek shampoo and conditioner and use a heat protect sleek liss spray to help protect your hair from the heat of your flat iron. Dry your hair off, then flat iron to help smooth your hair, and finish your hair off with Matrix sleek oil for a soft frizz free shinny Mila Kunis look. | November / December 2014 | CELEB STYLES

Kylie Jenner, Kristen Stewart, Kelly Osbourne, Rihanna, Demi Lovato and Katy Perry…. just some of the stars who got brave and went all out with their hair this year. From orange, to blue and pink, these stars, and more, have given people something to look at. So if you’re daring and love drastic change, add some colour to your hair for Christmas – and we don’t mean the usual blonde streaks you’ve been doing for the last 10 years! Tanya advises those doing drastic dyes to use a professional brand of hair colour and make sure your shampoo and conditioner is for colour treated hair. She also says: “Also rinse your hair with lukewarm to cold water as hot water opens your hair follicle and that makes the colour fade faster. Use leave in conditioners or treatments to help keep your hair healthy and if your hair is coloured with a fashion colour (blue, pink, green etc) try to go as long as possible between washes as it helps the colour last longer.”

SAY GOODBYE
TO GREY By Angela Bakiaris
We
all fear it — but it’s inevitable. At some stage in our lives we will all have grey hair. But while most of us will dye them and deny they were ever there, others will take on the more distinguished (and in this day and age) sexy look with pride, and hope to look like Richard Gere. Yes, we say hope! In this issue, we talk grey... and ridding them away.
What Causes Grey Hair?
Contrary to popular belief, grey hair is not always related to one’s age. According to www.disabled-world.com, grey hair can occur as young as in our teens and range into our late 50s and even older. Some people, like Hollywood actor Steve Martin, have premature greying and start to grey in their early 20s or 30s. Others don’t become grey until they’re 50 or older. But generally some grey hair means you’re getting older — and in some cases, like with actor Richard Gere, sexier. Experts say hair is initially white until the cells in our hair follicles (Melanocytes) generate pigments, the main one being Melanin, giving our hair colour. The more melanin present, the darker the hair colour. When these Melanocytes stop producing the pigment the result is a transparent hair — which against your healthier darker hair gives the appearance of grey hair. In reality the hair is transparent. Experts believe that the main reason our hair turns grey is because it is hereditory — so you can thank your parents for your constant visits to the salon and the amount of money you’re spending on dying your hair. Generally, say sources, if your parents went grey young, so will you — but this is not always the case. Many factors play a role such as shock — this is knowns as Alopecia areata when the the thicker, darker hairs stop growing before it effects the growth of grey hairs, giving the impression of grey

hair overnight — as well as a stressful lifestyle, which has more recently been proven to cause grey hairs. Some say there is DNA damage caused by adrenaline, the chemical our body excretes in a ‘fight or flight’ scenario. Your hair also turns grey over time — so don’t think you’ll wake up tomorrow with a different look. The production of your colour pigment slows down and grey hair begins to appear.
How To Hide Grey Hair?
There are a number of ways you can continue looking, and feeling young. While most men choose to leave their hair grey (and mainly because men look gorgeous with their grey streaks — a curse for all woman!) there are some choices for concealing greys, such as: 1. Highlights — this is where hair strands are lightened to blend the grey with the rest of your hair. 2. Permanent colour — you can use this method when you have 45% to 50% grey. Some people prefer to leave some grey around their face. 3. Semi-permanent or semi-permanent colouring — the colour lasts a few weeks and is a good option for people just starting to see grey hairs appearing. 4. Hair products — if you don’t want to dye your hair but still want to conceal the grey, try a colouring tool such as spray on airbrush hair make-up, which washes out with a shampoo.
Grey Hair Facts
1. Pluck one grey hair and two more will grow back — this is completely false, say experts. 2. Grey hair can be harder to colour as it is more resistant to hair colour or hair dye due to a decreased amount of melanin. 3. Grey hair can also be the result of a medical condition. If you are deficient in B12 or suffer from a thyroid imbalance it can also cause your hair to go grey. 4. When your hair is half white and half coloured, it’s called ‘salt and pepper’. 5. Smokers are four times more likely to have grey hair than nonsmokers and smoking has been conclusively linked to accelerated hair loss. 6. Grey hair is more noticeable in people with darker hair because it stands out, but people with naturally lighter hair are just as likely to go grey. 7. Your chance of going grey increases 10-20 percent every decade after 30 years. 8. Keratin is the protein that makes up our hair, skin, and nails. 9. There is no scientific evidence that any diet, herb, supplement, or natural product can prevent or reverse grey hair. 10. Alopecia areata, a condition in which hair is lost from areas of the body, eventually causes round shaped patches of hair loss or complete hair loss called baldness.
Preventing Grey Hairs
A few years ago, experts reported that by 2015 L’Oreal would have a wonder pill to halt the natural ageing process and stop hair turning grey. “This pill is going to be bigger than Botox,” said Tony Maleedy, a trichologist and halt science consultant for Remington, at the time. But many believe the pill will be more like a vitamin, added to your daily supplements. According to an article published in 2012, L’Oreal scientists believe the pigment changing is ‘due to the levels of TRP-2 drop after the age of 30 and that hair cells finally succumb to a process that’s called ‘oxidative stress’.’ Many colourists believe that a pill to prevent hair loss could actually be good for business as highlights outnumber the colours being done in most salons. And while there are some pills currently on the market, such as Melancor, reportedly ‘the only grey hair compound designed to help you overcome genetic and natural ageing links to grey hair and baldness in both men and women’, we think the majority of people are still heading to the salon to get rid of them.

Anti-Age Your Hair
Turn back the clock on your locks with these easy solutions: 1. Don’t pluck the grey hairs out — some experts say when the hair is pulled out, the hair follicle produces another grey hair about 10-12 weeks later. Richard Gere 2. Take vitamins and supplements — while not proven, experts believe vitamin B can help. 3. Choose a great shampoo — keep your hair healthy by using good products. Ageing causes hair to become fine and less shiny. Wash it everyday with a strengthening shampoo. 4. Apply a weekly mask — keep coarse brittles at bay. 5. Eat more protein — and have it for breakfast when hair follicle growth Sean Connery is slowest. | November / December 2014 | CELEB STYLES

Tips From The Celeb Trainers’ Mouth
While celebrities follow a healthy lifestyle and try to always look their best, they have something we don’t all have — personal trainers. So of course we searched for tips from two of Hollywood’s most popular celebrity trainers, Tracy Anderson and Harley Pasternak. When it comes to getting into shape, Tracy Anderson, who trains stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Kim Kardashian suggest you... 1. Increase your workouts. 2. Shake things up regularly. 3. Give up on crunches (as they concentrate on one area and create imbalance in the body). 4. Audit your diet. 5. Eat carefully before exercising. Harley Pasternak, who trains Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry and Megan Fox, adds that you should: 1. Drink caffeinated tea or coffee. 2. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. 3. Add avocado to your diet, as well as some spice. 4. Sleep more to burn more. 5. Get fit with fibre. 6. Focus on strengthening your muscles on your back to create an illusion of a longer, leaner body. 7. Take the stairs. 8. Exercise while entertained. 9. Stop eating when you’re three-quarters full.

Jennifer Lawrence
Author Elanie Beckett
Jennifer
Lawrence suits this short style. To get this look Elanie Beckett, author of the Amazon Bestselling beauty book “Gremlin To Goddess: The Secrets For Total Transformation” and founder of Goddess Creations Hair Health & Beauty says that first of all, it is vital that you take into consideration how thick your own hair is. “I quite regularly get clients who request short, choppy or feathery styles like this when their own hair is very thin. This style is more likely to look full and funky if you have medium to thick hair to begin with. Very short hair is more likely to fall flat, or the scalp may be visible through thin hair that is cut this short, making the style difficult to handle for clients with thin hair. If you have thin hair and hope to successfully get your hair to look full like this, ask your stylist for a Volumizing Mist spray, or Volumizing Mousse to create the illusion of thicker hair. Also ask for two tones of very fine high lights, a dark brown and regular bleach, to create a multifaceted style that creates the illusion of thicker hair. You are more likely to enjoy this hair style if your own hair is quite straight, too. If you have very curly hair, I strongly recommend you opt for a Brazilian Blow Dry to make your hair more manageable and easier to straighten. If you decide to opt for the Brazilian blow dry, make sure that the salon you visit uses the original product, INOAR, as there are numerous dangerous counterfeit products on the market which can damage your hair and be hazardous to your health. If your hair is medium to thick, and not too curly, this style will leave you feeling sexy in no time at all. Shampoo and

condition your hair. Make sure that you rinse your conditioner out thoroughly or it might make your hair heavy and cause it to fall flat quickly. Towel dry your hair thoroughly and work a golf ball sized blob of mousse through your hair thoroughly. Experiment with the amount of mousse you use as it will vary according to the thickness and/dryness of your hair. Your hair should not feel very wet after applying the mousse, but rather just damp. Use your hair dryer on medium heat and medium speed to blow dry your hair while using your fingers as a comb to pull it straight and upright into the air. Once your hair is dry (you should look like a porcupine with all your hair standing straight upright), take a very small amount of wax, about the size of your pinkie nail is enough, and rub

vigorously between the palms of your hands to warm the wax up. Now work the wax through your hair by grabbing fistfuls of hair and pulling it in the direction you want it to lie. Finish off with a few sprays of medium to firm hold hairspray and use your fingers to shape your hair into points, if this is the look you are going for. For a softer, less pointy look, use the sharp end of a comb to gently separate your strands. You want to work the pointy end of the comb through your hair a few times, until you have achieved a softer look. Fluff it with your fingers until you are happy. If your hair is curly, rub the wax into your strands vigorously before spraying on your hairspray. Apply the wax by running your hands through your hair numerous times, not by rubbing your hair

between your palms as this can damage your hair. Now use your straightener on a medium heat setting and straighten your hair upright. You are still going for porcupine at this stage, as you would if your hair wasn’t curly. Be very careful not to set your straightener on its highest heat as you can easily scorch your hair, especially if you have bleached or high lighted it. Rather go over the same section a few times in fast, smooth motions, instead of trying to get it straight in one single, slow, scorching stroke. Once you have straightened all your hair, dampen your palms ever so slightly with water and use your fingers to pull your hair in the direction you want it to lie. You might want to gently apply slow, low heat from
like wax, some brands of salon products offer moulding pastes, which will also give you the desired result. It really depends on your type of hair and your personal preference. I would not advise you to use gel for this style as gel can be either hard or heavy, neither which will help you achieve this feminine, feathery look. While you are in the salon getting your hair cut into this (or any other) style, ask your stylist to explain to you what he/she is doing and to tell you what styling aids he/she is using on your hair. Before you opt for every product on the shelf, remember that salon products are specifically formulated to achieve certain results. You do not need seven different products to achieve this look. In my salon, I would use a good quality mousse, wax and hair spray. If you do not

How does it feel to be the first local ambassador to be used in a print campaign? It’s an honour to be put in the forefront of something as important as image.Your skin is the first thing anyone you meet will notice and I hope I will be able to help lots of young women in their journey towards healthy skin. Have you always taken good care of your skin? Share some of your secrets with us. Not always, it was only in my puberty years that I realised the importance of consciously taking good care of my skin. The secret to great skin is what I call CTM: Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise. I use the NIVEA Daily Essentials Shine Control (Green Range). Step 1: Cleanse morning and night using NIVEA Daily Essentials Shine ControlFace Wash Gel. Step 2: Tone with the Daily Essentials Shine Control Toner, which leaves my face feeling fresh. Step 3: Moisturise using NIVEA Daily Essentials Shine Control Moisturising Day Cream SPF15.
Step 1
What does beauty mean to you? Beauty stems from within, it means being in touch and in love with you in a non-indulgent way. When you love yourself, so will the world. Who inspires you when it comes to looking and feeling beautiful? Basetsana Khumalo Does being in the limelight put a lot of pressure on you to always look your best? Not at all, I always try to remain myself, as long as I’m comfortable, I’m happy.
Step 3
Step 2
Do you follow a strict diet and exercise regime and do you feel that it plays a role in having good skin too? Yes, keeping fit and making sure I don’t eat junk food improves my blood flow which gives me younger, healthier looking skin. What are the must-have beauty items always found in your handbag? I always carry my NIVEA Daily Essentials Refreshing Cleansing Lotion – it’s a great way to refresh on the go.
How has this new role changed your perspective on beauty and taking care of yourself? I realise just how many South African women struggle with their skin and not only that but their identity. I’m hoping I can help a lot of women learn to love themselves. | November/ December 2014 | CELEB STYLES

CELEB INTERVIEW
She’s
become famous as one of the hottest reality stars on TV. Recently in South Africa for Sexpo, we got chatting to Coco, best known for her role on reality TV show Ice Loves Coco, about her hair and beauty secrets, as well as what fashion means to her. You’re in the public eye a lot — not just due to your reality show Ice Loves Coco — but you’re snapped everywhere you go. Do you feel pressurised to always look good and do you always make sure you hair and make-up is done before leaving home? Yes, I definitely feel 100% pressure to look good at all times. When I get up in the morning I have my hair and make-up done and I pick out my outfit and my family laugh at me. You have to be camera ready at all times. You never know who’s creeping in the bushes to snap that shot. Coco doesn’t have a time off — I like to get out of bed well groomed and ready to go for the day. People ask me if I ever wear sweats — if I do they’ll be cute sweats.
Do you have a big Hollywood stylist, or do you go to anyone for your hair? I’ve gone to a salon in New Jersey called Blue Salon for years and they keep my hair right. I’m a natural brunette and started dying my hair at 18 — I started with a few blonde highlights in my dark hair and my gay hair stylist at the time said I wouldn’t stop with just highlights. He said my hair would be platinum in a year — he was right, it’s an addiction, I was completely blonde in a year. I go to them once a month for my roots and a blow dry. But I do my own hair for photo shoots and events — I’ve experimented with my own hair so much I know it best. I also like to do my own make up — I took classes when I was younger. I like taking care of myself. I’m a girly girl and like to keep everything right.
‘I’m a natural brunette and started dying my hair at 18.’
Did you always love to dress up, have your hair and make-up done and make a statement? No… I was a tomboy up until I was 17. A stylish tomboy though — I loved clothes and tennis shoes back in the day but I didn’t bloom as a glam girl until I hit 18. I realised I had curves and that I should accentuate them with some dresses. I also thought I should try heels to make me taller. I started finding out the tricks of being a woman. I realised I was born to be a woman and couldn’t look like a tomboy all the time. God gave me woman parts, so I should make him proud. What is your take on beauty products vs plastic surgery and Botox? I started using beauty products since I was a 16-year-old girl. I always knew no matter what I did to myself I will always have good skin — I’m constantly moisturising, it’s the key to keeping your skin beautiful. I’m not against plastic surgery though — my boobs were donna’s you all know. And if down the road I need tightening and tugging, I will definitely do it. People just shouldn’t go overboard. How do you keep up with different styles and trends? I’ve always had a certain style and never grown past it. I’ve never tried other styles. I know what I like and what works well with me and I stick to it. Who is your style icon when it comes to hair and beauty? Bettie Page — she’s a pin-up girl, very vintage. I always look at her style. Cutting edge but soft.

Which hair and beauty products do you swear by? Shiseido for my skin — my mom and grandmother used it and I have been using it since I was 15. I swear by it. I moisturise my face morning and night. What are your own hair and beauty secrets? I’ve tried every shampoo and conditioner in the world. I don’t use regular conditioner on my hair I use a conditioning mask. Tell us a bit about your fashion style and what you love to wear — at home as well as at big events? My favourite designer is Roberto Cavalli — he really makes sophisticated, nice fitting clothes which hug your curves. I always love the material — it’s always nice and soft and feels good on your body. As for my own style, it’s basic with the same thing over and over. I love the pin-up look — I like my clothes to be really tight around my waist. I don’t have to accentuate my boobs because they are really big. I always focus on my waist. I like showing off my legs too — you will see me in a tight, short dress. I’m not very adventurous with my clothes — I know what looks good on me so don’t try anything else because it will all go sour. I have to be careful of my height — I’m 1,57m so not everything looks good on a small person. Body-hugging dresses are my style! Is Ice a pretty well groomed man or do you keep him groomed? Tell us a bit about his grooming habits and secrets. (Laughs) I think every girl likes their man to be a little more groomed because guys just don’t really care. I definitely think men should care more about themselves because down the road their skin is going to get wrinkly just like women. As for Ice, he is very simple. I try to do maintenance on him at times likes trim his nose hairs, and I’ve tried to get him to do lotions a couple of times but he might try it once — it’s not a normal routine for him.
