Feeling Katy Although Katy Perry prides herself on not ever having plastic surgery, the singer definitely loves her make-up. However, her beauty looks have changed slightly. In her Teenage Dream tour, Katy was all about the colourful wigs and make-up, and over the top costumes. Now Katy is doing more of a glamorous pin up kind of look. She likes to keep the eye shadow light, and go dark and heavy on the lashes, eye liner, and sometimes the lips. She often opts for a nude lipstick too. More fabulous music beauties from page 36.

DINEO AT A GLANCE... Sophisticated, beautiful, poised and professional are just a few words to describe Joburg born beauty, Dineo Moeketsi.

his talented singer, actress, TV presenter and voice of radio, knows how to make a statement whether it’s her professional poise, her caring manner or her simply genuine love for those around her. She’s the introductory voice of 5FM as well as the narrator of the new-hit show Googlebox! This talented lady is also the lead role in the much anticipated local romantic-comedy, Mrs Right Guy, which will open at cinemas nationally on April 29, 2016. We get to know this star a little better... Birth Date: 20 July Birth Place: Springs Biggest Turn-Off: Arrogance — there is enough hatred and war in this world that we do not need any more coming from people around us. Stay grounded, stay humble and stay truthful to yourself. Always try be the best version of yourself, daily! And if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Biggest Turn-On: Confidence — there is nothing sexier than a man/woman that feels comfortable in her own skin. That beauty radiates from within and makes a mark on those that you come in contact with. Favourite Artist: My main-girl BEYONCE! I love and respect everything about that woman. As a mother, an artist and as a performer. She is worldclass, and no one comes near to her standards. Favourite Quote: Do a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Who is you icon? My late Great-Grandmother who accomplished so much as an entrepreneur, a bread winner, a mother and a wife.

How do you cope with such a busy schedule? It’s all part of the job! It’s my passion and it is my career, so I will deal with the lack of sleep and the late nights just as long as I enjoy every minute of it and reach the dreams and goals I have set out for myself. What do you like to do to keep yourself busy when you’re not working? I love working out, and you will often find me at SWEAT1000, but when I do occasionally have some off time, I usually spend it with my loved ones, and my friends. A nice girly lunch or day out with the family.

On fashion…

How would you describe your personal style? Sophicticated with some edge. I like playing around with different looks, however, feeling good in what I am wearing, and feeling classy is always a must. What is your favourite retail store? I love River Island and Zara, as well as a touch of Mango and definitely Spitz for shoes. Who’s your favourite designer? I am currently the face of the dynamic duo designers, Quiteria & George who are incredibly talented and know how to perfectly style and dress me and my body. They have become family and I have the utmost respect for them. Do you like experimenting with different colours, patterns and styles or do you like to stick to one particular look? I'm a huge fan of print and colour. I love expressing myself through my style and exploring my boldness as a woman. Have you ever made your own clothes? I haven’t made my own clothes as such, but rather made my own ensembles mixing different items of clothing. What colours do you think look good on you? I love rich deep colours, like purple and even a deep yellow. I enjoy wearing bright colours, but one can never go wrong with a classic black look.

On hair…

You always look well-groomed and fashionable. You are also known for mixing things up and playing around with different hairstyles. Who is your hairstylist? The talented ladies at Lajawi Beauty Cafe look after my gorgeous locks. They really are the best in the business and we have such great connection and understanding of what I am looking to achieve with my hair. The thing I love most about my hair is its versatility. How do you keep your beautiful long hair in such good shape? Don't over colour your hair. Always have your split ends cut. Don't put oily products on your weave. What do you love about long hair? It’s fun, fluty and you can style it in many different ways. Long hair makes me feel sexy! What are your must-have hair products? Hair Silicone Serum is my go to hair product because it keeps my hair nourished. How often do you change your ‘look’? I like to experiment with different hairstyles, but it also depends on work and what character I am playing at the time. For Mrs Right Guy, I shot with a short hair-do, however, I tend to usually go with long locks that I can curl and play around with.

On beauty…

What’s your favourite make-up brand? MAC — every day and all day. What your favourite make-up look at the moment? I have always been a firm favourite of the smoky eye. It’s incredibly sultry and it really does bring out my eyes. You are known for your bright lip colours — which is your favourite at the moment? I recently wore a deep rich purple on the red carpet from MAC, which I loved, but I’m open to lots of different colours. It’s important to add a little colour to ones life. MAC Heroine is a winner!!! What is your beauty routine? Different routines work for different people, but three important steps I always ensure I take are: Moisturizer, Primer, then Make-Up. Find what works for your skin. | May / June 2016 | CELEB STYLES

BANGS

. .bangs Olivia Wilde

Erin Lim

You might think that a fringe and bangs don’t go together unless your hair is in a normal plait down the back. But you can rock a crown braid like a boss! Braid the top part hair into a vertical tight French braid, taking in the bangs. Keep the hair out of the face and create a tight updo, like Olivia Wilde, Erin Lim and Ciara. Or you can leave bangs out like Constance Wu.

TIP Spray your hair with dry shampoo before starting to braid. It gives texture to work with and make things look just a touch messy.

Even if Kylie Jenner’s hair is a bit longer than yours, you can still try out her cute braided pigtails! We’ve seen nearly all the Kardashians step out in this style and it’s definitely a trend. These pigtails are the perfect lazy day hairstyle, as it works best on damp, towel-dried hair. So no blow dry required! Braid the top part and leave the rest loose like Chrissy Teigen’s for another awesome way to wear it.

CURLY HAIR

creative!

Luckily girls with naturally curly hair don’t need to create texture. But they do tend to have it a little more difficult when creating braids. Your go-to braid should be a fishtail. They take a bit more time than a traditional braid, but they look fancier and they tend to hold chaotic curls in place.

Unicorn Braids are a must, especially for those of you rocking natural hair. Just section off one strip of hair down the middle of your head and braid. Another great style for natural hair is to create a centre part or a deep side part and then braid down the side of the head, leaving the rest of the hair loose.

To create grip on short hair, apply a texturizing product from roots to tips. A deep side part, like Ruby Rose’ can also aid in creating the style. Finish braids on short hair with a strong hold hairspray.

Fake A Wing

What makes a smokey eye look so polished? Lining around the eye, of course! Dip a thin make-up brush into water and dab into the darkest colour on your palette: black. Trace on the upper and lower lashes.

The secret to a clean smokey eye? A tissue. Fold it in half and hold it at the outer corner of the eye, angled upwards. With a fluffy brush, dust your chosen colour over the lid, just past the crease and out towards the tissue. Blend the shadow inside the cre ase.

Smudge You might think that your eyes are looking a bit harsh now, so soften the black by running another brush over the line. With the same brush, skim the lower lashline with a slate grey eye shadow. Adding this bit of grey would make it look like you spent time blending the two colours together.

t’s one of the ultimate make-up rules: don’t pair a dark lip and eye together, either choose one or the other. Can rules be broken? Yes, definitely! We aren’t saying that this ultradark look is for everyone, but it’s simple to pull off with our guide. Especially in winter, it’s easy to get away with a little more make-up and an intense eye plus lip can look glamorous and sexy. One rule to stick to when trying this out: make sure skin looks fresh, flawless and more natural. Otherwise the overall effect will appear way too heavy.

Jennifer Lopez loves to wear serious eye make-up to stand out. We almost never see her without false lashes either. It can be tricky to apply falsies, but it’s a sure-fire way to make make-up look even more amazing! Place lashes where the natural bulk of eyelashes begin, look down and press the strip lash against your lash line in the centre, the outer edge and inner corner. These are also the areas where you should apply the glue.

orget about the medicine cabinet. Your humble fridge can hold just about everything you need to give winter blues the cold shoulder and your immune system a good old kick in the butt! By making a few simple adjustments and additions to your weekly grocery shopping list you can stock up on nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals and, best of all, they’re currently on the shelves! Super foods are foods that are exceptionally high in nutritional value and boast many health benefits, including reducing the risk of chronic disease and prolonging life. Eating super foods also helps to re-mineralise the body, minimising the desire for snacking on sugar rich foods, in turn helping the body get back on track with a healthy lifestyle. We take at look at the top five super foods and who in Hollywood is nibbling on them.

Coconuts

From coconut water to coconut oil celebrities are digging the benefits of this exotic fruit available locally towards the end of winter. Coconut water — regularly sipped by Madonna, Jessica Alba, Demi Moore and Matthew McConaughey — is low in calories and sugar compared to fruit juices. It has a lovely crisp, sweet taste and because it's naturally ‘isotonic’ many health gurus claim it can actually be better for hydration than water alone because it has a similar concentration of salts and sugars to the human body. The salts found in coconut help our body to retain the fluid it needs and helps the fluid to get into our cells. Arguably, even more beneficial than coconut water is coconut oil. Supermodel Miranda Kerr, Kourtney Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gisele Bundchen, Dr. Oz and Angelina Jolie all swear by coconut oil for healthy skin, shiny hair, weight loss and boosting metabolism.

Tomatoes

It’s odd to think that just 200 years ago the tomato was thought to be poisonous, likely because the plant belongs to the ‘nightshade family’ ( of which some species are truly poisonous). Today the many health benefits of tomatoes are well-known and can be attributed to their wealth of nutrients and vitamins, including an impressive amount of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as significant amounts of vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin. Tomatoes are also a good source of potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, and copper. The tomato is called a ‘functional food’ because it goes beyond providing just basic nutrition. Due to their beneficial phytochemicals such as lycopene, tomatoes also play a role in preventing chronic disease. The folic acid in tomatoes may even help with depression by preventing an excess of homocysteine from forming in the body, which can prevent blood and other nutrients from reaching the brain. Excess homocysteine interferes with the production of the feel-good hormones serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which regulate mood, sleep and appetite. It’s no wonder Katy Perry, singer Fergie and Carrie Underwood add sliced tomato to every meal.

Avos

Avocado, available locally from June through to August, is a great source of Vitamin E, essential to maintain general health. Eaten whole, or added to sandwiches or salads, avo is also known as ‘youth vitamin’ with its anti-aging properties. Nutritionists explain one of the highlights of avocadoes is their potassium content: one avocado can contain as much as 1000 mg of potassium — several times the amount contained in a banana. Potassium is vital for maintaining a healthy blood pressure, and for nerve and muscle function. They are also good sources of magnesium, copper, vitamin C and several B vitamins. High level of dietary fibre help to control blood sugar levels and will keep you fuller for longer. According to a recent survey, women are still fat-phobic and cautious about eating avo because of its fat content. But the truth is eating the right types of fat is actually a savvy weight-loss strategy. In addition to upping satiety, plant-based fats like avocado provide antioxidants and fight inflammation, which have both been linked to weight management. That may be why recent research revealed that regular avocado eaters weigh less and have smaller waists, even without eating fewer calories. If you don't believe us, just look at sexy and trim stars like Miley Cyrus, Victoria Beckham and Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen — all die-hard avo fans!

Almonds

What’s the world’s healthiest food? If you answered almonds you answered right. Almond is available throughout the year but particularly popular in winter because of their health benefits. This little nut is high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats as are found in olive oil, which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. The flavonoids found in almond skins team up with the vitamin E found in their meat to more than double the antioxidant punch either delivers when administered separately. Twenty potent antioxidant flavonoids were identified in almond skins in a recent study, some of which are well known as major contributors to the health benefits derived from other foods, such as the catechins found in green tea, and naringenin, which is found in grapefruit. Heidi Klum swears by raw almonds (skin on). “Raw almonds are the perfect snack. A handful can hold me over to my next meal. Best yet, they are so good for you!,” she says. Other celebs who are nuts over almonds include Rita Ora, Rihanna, Oprah Winfrey and model Claudia Schiffer.

Lemons, Oranges, Limes And Grapefruits

Think bright oranges, zesty yellows, groovy greens and tantalising pinks. Citrus fruits are jampacked with vitamins and minerals and one of the best immune fighting fruits out there. Eaten whole or freshly juiced they are renowned for fighting free radicals, healing wounds, staving off colds and flu and improving blood flow. Don’t be fooled by their size. One medium orange, for example, packs more than 100 percent of the recommended daily dose for vitamin C (and some research suggests organic citrus packs up to 17 percent more vitamin C than conventional). Die-hard fans of lemons, oranges, limes and grapefruits include Blake Lively, Nikki Reed, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Lauren Conrad and Denise Richards.

hey lost big time, then piled it all back on again, only to lose it and then gain it again. When it comes to yo-yo celebs Val Kilmer, Alec Baldwin, Oprah Winfrey, Kirstie Alley, Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, John Travolta, Ryan Gosling, Vince Vaughn and Raven Symone take the cake (and then eat it). Losing weight is hard enough but maintaining weight loss can be even harder, the secrete, say experts, is to become more knowledgeable about nutrition and what constitutes healthy eating. Learn which fats are good, bad and which are ugly; look at ways of speeding up your metabolism;

44

Alec Baldwin Then And Now

and keep the weight loss down. We chat to well-known and renowned South African dietician Celynn Erasmus for inside tips on how to do just that. All About Metabolism Everyone knows that a 3.0 litre V8 uses way more fuel than a 1.3 litre hatch. Just like a car’s engine capacity determines how much fuel it uses, so does your body’s metabolism determine how much 'fuel' you use. Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Even when you're at rest, your body needs energy for

basic functions such as breathing, digestion and repair. The number of kilojoules or calories your body uses for these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Your BMR is determined by several factors such as your gender, body weight, body composition (more muscle implies higher BMR) and your age. A dietician can help determine your BMR and determine your personal daily energy requirements. Blame It On Genes? Experts tell us that our genes or genotype may influence our weight up to about 60 percent. So it may

be that your friend’s genes are helping her somewhat but remember: you can always do something about your environment and lifestyle choices. Many people blame weight gain on metabolism when in actual fact it is more likely to be related to consuming too many kilojoules and getting too little exercise! Only rarely is weight gain caused by a medical problem that slows metabolism such as Cushing's syndrome or an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Trying to boost your metabolism by eating more chili, drinking green tea, getting more sleep probably won't lead to weight loss, at least not to the degree that changing your diet and lifestyle habits will. Rather focus on the factors you have the most control over and that is energy in and energy out! To lose weight, you should reduce the number of kilojoules in your diet. But not too much! Slashing too many kilojoules (to less than 5000 kJ or 1200 calories) by missing meals, fad diets, eliminating food groups, taking pills, etc. will deprive your body of fuel and is a surefire way to slow down your metabolism. Food provides the energy your metabolism needs for digestion in a process called 'dietary induced thermogenesis'. Restricting kilojoules too much signals your body that there is no food available, so it tries to conserve stores by slowing down your metabolism. You can’t run your body’s engine on fumes! Just remember that you should always fill up with the best quality fuel available. The best way to keep your metabolism revved and stoked all day is to start your day with breakfast and to eat regular meals and snacks to give your body a constant supply of healthy fuel. Keep in mind that, as you lose weight and as you age, you may need even fewer kilojoules. Keep Moving Depending on your body size, fitness level, and exercise | May / June 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Remember that, just as a car needs regular maintenance, so does your body. Fill up with enough of the right fuel, keep it in good shape and take care of your body and it will take care of you for the long haul.

John Travolta Then And Now

Don’t under eat — your fuel tank cannot run on empty. Don’t overeat — you will feel sluggish and lethargic. Choose real, unprocessed food — the closer to nature, the better. Be balanced — allow for some flexibility. Have fun — eat with enjoyment and gratitude in order to feel nourished. Above all, listen to your body. It will tell you more than all the nutrition experts on the planet.

intensity, you may burn about 1800 kJ in 60 minutes of exercise. The National Weight Control Registry monitors more than 3,000 individuals who have successfully maintained at least a 13kg weight loss for a minimum of 1 year. These individuals report using a variety of methods to lose weight initially, but more than 90% report exercise as crucial to their long-term weight loss maintenance. For all the good it does, fat is often targeted as the culprit in the battle of the bulge. It is easy to understand why. At 36kJ per gram, all fat, packs more than twice the kilojoules of carbohydrate and protein. So, should you be choosing fat-free products and ordering egg-white-only omelettes to avoid fat? No. Fat-free does not automatically translate into healthy. Fat-free foods may come at a cost. In order to compensate for the lack of fat, refined sugars may be added. Many fat-free flavoured yoghurts, for instance, contain appreciable amounts of sugar, as do fat-free baked items or condiments such as chutney or sweet chilli sauce. When purchasing products that make claims such as low fat or fatfree, read the list of ingredients to spot any added sugars and to get an idea of whether the item is as healthy as you may perceive it to be. Golden Nugget: As we get older we tend to lose muscle, gain fat and our metabolism slows down as a result. One way to combat this metabolic slowdown is with regular strength or resistance training. Resistance training stimulates your metabolic rate for much longer than cardiovascular workouts do.

The Facts On Fat

How much fat do you need? Fat should make up about a

third of your total energy intake, about 40–70g fat per day. In practical terms: 10–15g fat per meal, and 5g fat per snack. The fats that are totally off limits are the trans-fats (trans-fatty acids) in processed foods. Trans-fats are formed when oil goes through a process called hydrogenation, making the oil more solid. This type of fat, known as hydrogenated fat, is used for frying or as an ingredient in many processed foods. The impact of trans-fats intake is generally undisputed. There is convincing evidence that consumption of these fats increases risk for heart disease and diabetes. Where do transfats lurk? Trans-fats can be found in takeaway foods and some processed foods such as baked items, coffee creamers and snack foods. Look for terms like hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredients list — these are red flags for trans-fats.

Can Carbs Be Cool?

Foods that contain sugars, starches, and fibre generally belong to the carbohydrate camp. Fast-release carbohydrates (most products made with flour, certain cereals, maltodextrin, glucose, dextrose, high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, honey, malt, soft drinks) = rollercoaster blood glucose = high insulin = energy slumps = weight gain = diabetes and heart disease. Definitely not what you want. Slow-release carbohydrates (vegetables, many fruits, unrefined starches such as barley, whole grains and legumes, dairy) = higher fibre = better nutrients = sustained energy = weight management. Should you cut out all carbohydrates? No. It is more important to eat the right carbohydrates in the correct amounts, than to follow a strict

diet avoiding carbohydrates completely. Fill up, not out by loading fibre onto your plate. One way to make better choices is to choose carbohydrates that are less processed and as high in fibre as possible. There are many benefits to choosing higher fibre foods.

Be A Mindful Muncher

No one goes to bed skinny and wakes up fat. Most people gain (or lose) weight so gradually that they cannot really figure out how it happened. All you remember is once being able to fit into your favourite skinny jeans without having to hold your breath. Because weight management is directly linked to managing your energy intake, becoming a kilojoules or calorie guru is essential. Kilojoules (or calories: kCal) are the amount of energy found in food and beverages. Kilojoules also refer to the amount of energy that our bodies use up through metabolism and while moving. Kilojoules and kilocalories both measure the same thing, energy, similar to kilometres and miles that both measure distance. In South Africa we make use of the metric measuring system and therefore use kilojoules. Various nutrition resources, such as imported food products and websites, may use kilocalories. Use the following to convert between the two: kCal to kJ = multiply by 4.18 and kJ to kCal = divide by 4.18. On most days you likely have very little idea whether you’ve eaten too much or too little. That extra glass of wine, that packet of chips or that chocolate after dinner can easily creep up and stockpile to an extra 1,000kJ or more. 1,000 extra kJ (240kCal) per day = 365,000 extra kJ (87,000kCal) per year. That’s a potential weight gain of almost 10kg (22lbs) over a year.

• SMOOTH ‘N SHINE Hold & Shine Spritz I love it as it doesn’t leave flakes when it dries up and allows for easy comb through and acts as a styling memory lotion. • SMOOTH ‘N SHINE Oil Sheen Spray I use for a glossy finish to any desired style which gives a shine without leaving the hair greasy. How has the hair industry changed since you started? The hair industry hasn’t changed much; but it has become more formal in terms of education through training and workshops. It has evolved in a way that it’s so vast you don’t have to be confined to the four walls of a salon, the landscape has evolved with limitless opportunities within different industries such as being a hair stylist on TV, movies and print platforms. Name a few hair tips that you swear by? • Wash your hair at least once or twice a week. • Do a deep conditioning hair treatment every 2 weeks • Regularly hydrate your hair using a moisturiser or hair food on a daily basis. Name the products you can’t live without? SMOOTH ‘N SHINE Foam Wrap and SMOOTH ‘N SHINE Hold & Shine Spritz. Have you got any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry? Go to school, study hard. Do what you love and love what you do. What is your favorite perk of the job? Interacting with different people every day, it’s amazing what you can learn from people each day What styles can we look forward to for winter? A variety of Braids and Weaves are hot for this season.

P

ronounced ‘trik-o-til-o-MAY-nee-uh, this is a disorder that involves recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body, despite trying to

stop. While it sounds horrific to most, it’s a very common disorder, even suffered by many of the stars in Hollywood. Leaving patchy, bald spots, the cause of trichotillomania is still unclear, however according to experts, like

According to mayoclinic.org, this is what to look out for:

Signs & Symptoms

• Repeatedly pulling your hair out, typically from your scalp, eyebrows or eyelashes, but can be from other body areas, and sites may vary over time. • An increasing sense of tension before pulling, or when you try to resist pulling. • A sense of pleasure or relief after the hair is pulled. • Shortened hair or thinned or bald areas on the scalp or other areas of your body, including sparse or missing eyelashes or eyebrows. • Preference for specific types of hair, rituals that accompany hair pulling or patterns of hair pulling • Biting, chewing or eating pulled-out hair. • Playing with pulled-out hair or rubbing it across your lips or face.

5

Trichotillomania Facts

• Most people who have trichotillomania also will pick their skin, bite their nails or chew their lips. Experts adds that pulling hairs from pets or dolls or from materials, such as clothes or blankets, may be a sign, too. • Most people with trichotillomania pull hair in private and generally try to hide the disorder from others. • For people with trichotillomania, hair pulling can be focused or automatic. • Trichotillomania is a long-term (chronic) disorder — without treatment, symptoms can vary in severity over time. • More women than men are treated for the disorder.

many complex disorders, it probably results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Abnormalities in the natural brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine may play a role in trichotillomania, too. For some people this disorder can be mild and manageable, but for others it can be very overwhelming, with many going to great lengths to disguise the loss of hair. We share some facts, signs, symptoms and risk factors with you to help you understand the disorder better.

Famous Trichsters….

They might be rich, famous and gorgeous, but they too suffer from stress and various disorders. These stars have admitted to suffering from the compulsion of pulling their hair… • Megan Fox: The gorgeous actress was diagnosed with trichotillomania and has been sent to the hospital for treatment three times. She speaks very openly about her struggles with this disorder. • Charlize Theron: The SA-born actress admitted that she had been diagnosed with trichotillomania during an interview with an Australian radio station, adding that she had accepted it and that it’s a nightmare to have this condition. • Justin Timberlake: The singer/actor was diagnosed with the trichotillomania disorder in 2008. He has confessed that it’s not easy to live with this condition. • Victoria Beckham: The fashionista dealt with severe hair loss a while back, reportedly partially due to trichotillomania. • Katy Perry: In 2010 she confessed that she was suffering from the trichotillomania disorder. • Naomi Campbell: While the supermodel hasn’t admitted to it, she has been photographed with bald patches over the years. She also has other behavioural issues which has led to trichotillomania speculation. • Olivia Munn: The actress has revealed that she suffers from trichotillomania that causes her to pull out her eyelashes. And while she says that having this disorder is very annoying, she does not consider herself a weak human being.

Risk Factors

Experts reveal that these factors tend to increase the risk of trichotillomania: • Family history — in some it may occur in those who have a close relative with the disorder. • Age — it usually develops just before or during the early teens — most often between the ages of 11 and 13 — and is often a lifelong problem. While infants also can be prone to hair pulling, this is usually mild and goes away on its own without treatment. • Negative emotions — a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, anxiety, tension, loneliness, fatigue or frustration. • Positive reinforcement — some people find the pulling satisfying, giving them a sense of relief. • Other disorders — depression, anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Hitting The Gym

The best way to shed kilos fast is by hitting the gym — we all know that. Stars around Hollywood are spending their free time doing some cardio and weights — and making sure they get all the exercise needed to get their bodies in shape for summer. From Calvin Harris, to Cameron Diaz and the Kardashians — and that’s the whole bunch of them, we’ll have you know it (including Rob) — it seems the gyms are filled with celebrities these days.”Personally, I love the gym,” Cameron Diaz wrote in her manual The Body Book. “I love being around people who are sweaty and pushing themselves.”

Getting Bikini Ready

From Selena Gomez, to Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner, eating clean and training dirty is vital if they’re going to be in the limelight — especially during bikini season. And especially in a time where selfies rule the world! These girls are already in perfect shape for the hot months ahead.

Celebs are forever being spotted on a bike ride through the hills. It’s a great way to stay in shape, burn calories and feel amazing. And the outdoors is fabulous for de-stressing, too. What more does one need in summer?

SUMMER SECRETS FROM THE STARS

By Angela Bekiaris As we go into winter, the stars are shaping up for a hot summer — and we’re paying attention.

I

t’s the time of the year when celebrities get to flaunt their assets everywhere they go. Be it on the beach, on the red carpet or just out and about in Los Angeles, our favourite stars have been working hard to shape up for summer. And it’s not just about their

bodies — it’s about looking good from head to toe. So, while we have some time before the hot months come back again, we felt this was the best time to steal some hair, beauty and fitness tips, and be just as ready as them when our summer comes around again.

Juicing It

From Colin Farrell to Amy Adams, celebs have been spotted going very green the last few weeks. That’s green juice, ladies and gentlemen. Both Colin and Amy, amongst others, have been seen leaving the gym with a green smoothie in hand — a nice healthy drink to pump them up and boost their metabolism. | May / June 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Yoga & Pilates

Stars like Jessica Biel and Miranda Kerr love their yoga sessions. Not only do they find them rewarding, but it helps keep them in shape — not just for summer, but all year round. From Zoe Saldana to Jennifer Aniston, Pilates is an important part of their fitness regimen, too — especially when it’s time to flaunt a little more skin. “I love doing Pilates—doesn’t matter what season it is,” says Zoe.

Drinking More Water

They’re hydrating like crazy — it’s no secret water is great for your body, especially when the temperatures start rising. Celebs are drinking loads more water, especially when training, to keep their skin healthy, body slim and overall health in tip-top shape.

Less Blow-Drying

With warm days ahead, celebrities are leaving their hair to breathe a little, by allowing it to air dry and look natural. This is very easily done while at the beach, on vacation or just out with friends for lunch. Using this time to let your hair recover is fabulous — and clearly the stars know what’s important when it comes to looking great. And when they need to style their tresses, they’re making sure to use products which will protect their hair from heat damage.

Piling On The Sunscreen

Looking nice and tanned is always great, but most of our gorgeous Hollywood ladies feel strongly about piling on the sunscreen. Stars like Kat Dennings, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez make sure to never leave home without sunscreen on. It’s a great anti-ageing secret, too. “I’m a massive believer in sunblock. Massive,” says Oscar-winning beauty Charlize Theron, who adds that she wears it in the rainy, winter months too.

Walking

Sex And The City’s Kristin Davis says “I do walk my dogs every day and I live in the Hills, so that’s definitely a work out. It’s just so nice to be outside in the summer with them.” And she’s not the only one who enjoys hitting the streets for some calorie burning and toning. “I’ve lived in New York, so I walk everywhere. I try not to take too many cabs,”reveals Pushing Daisies star Kristen Chenoweth.

Less Make-Up

Summer is the perfect time to be a little more natural — yes, even in Hollywood. With a little tan, and full days in the sun, the stars are keeping their makeup minimal, allowing their skin to breathe while they absorb some much-needed vitamin D — and a cocktail or two, of course!

Taking Vitamins

They’re all popping vitamins at this time of the year — and it’s not just for an energy boost. Vitamins are great for your hair, too. Supplements will improve things dramatically, especially for hair that’s regularly heat styled and processed, say experts. Plus it will aid in hair growth, making sure it gets thicker and healthier. | May / June 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Taylor’s Beauty Must-Haves

She’s young, fresh and naturally beautiful — but it never hurt anyone to take care of their skin, either. With a busy lifestyle, and huge competition in Tinseltown, Taylor makes sure to keep it simple, yet gorgeous, everywhere she goes. The star loves her red lipstick, say insiders, who add that she rocks it on stage as well as on the beach. And while she’s pretty plain and natural, she is known for her winged eyeliner, as well as a sultry metallic smoky eye. Taylor is also spotted complementing her gorgeous look with a simple soft pink lip and rouge cheeks at times, too.

Envious Gorgeous Hairstyles

Curly, straight, long or short, she knows how to rock a stylish hairstyle. Taylor is proof that girls with curly hair can wear a fringe, even if it takes an extra 10 minutes every morning. The singer also loves to accessorizes with hats — she is often snapped on the streets of New York and L.A. with a stylish hat, and not to hide her bangs, but just to stay trendy. Her lob really got people talking — and loving — but it was her wob (wavy lob) which started a whole new trend in Hollywood. And while she’s young and fashionable, she’s also not shy to show off her more classic look when the time calls for it. And according to insiders, she doesn’t use any product on those gorgeous blonde tresses either. "My hair is naturally curly, so it's a lot easier to just let it be. I'm scared to death of it feeling crunchy,” she once revealed.

Complete Fashion Diva

Being a superstar means you have to be in the limelight all the time — but when it comes to looking fab in front of the camera, Taylor knows the secret. She might have the long legs and cute smile to get everyone’s attention, but she also has a great sense of fashion — on the red carpet and off. From street style to complete glam during award season, Taylor knows exactly how to mix and match — and leave a lasting impression. Whether she’s leaving the gym, or meeting friends for drinks, Taylor gets the outfit just right — and of course, with a body like hers, it’s not too difficult.

How Taylor Shakes It Off 64

CELEB STYLES | May / June 2016 |

When you have a body like Taylor’s, it really is no crime to flaunt it all day long. Toned, slim and healthy, the singer might have been blessed with a great physique, but just like there best of Hollywood she works hard to stay in shape, too. The 1,80-metre tall star loves the treadmill, with insiders revealing she does an hourlong cardio exercise, no matter where she is. Not a fan of the road, the star trains hard on the treadmill or elliptical trainer, and reportedly loves to sweat — which yes, also keeps any fat at bay. According to insiders, she is one of the few stars in Hollywood without an inch of fat on her body. The star doesn’t focus on losing weight, but rather getting into shape, say insiders, who add that while she does not lift weights or do any special muscular exercises, her main aim is to increase her endurance on stage, so that she does not start panting while performing. Taylor also loves to listen to her fellow artist’ music to kick out stress in her life. And when it comes to her diet, insiders reveal she loves to eat and loves cooking as well. Taylor believes that depriving oneself of eating, only leads to overeating later on. And while she’s never had to worry about a weight problem, she still watches what she eats and drinks — and likes to stay away from sugary drinks which may prove to be unhealthy later on. She reportedly stays hydrated with water, eats healthy and light during the week, mostly salads, yogurt and sandwiches, and like the rest of us, she indulges a little over the weekend, enjoying burgers and fries, as well as ice-cream or cookies which she bakes herself. | May / June 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Our expert KenCharles From Salon Kenito answers YOUR questions.

Angela from Edenvale asks... I’ve just turned 40 and want to try something different with my hair that makes me look younger. My hair is long and straight, should I get bangs or cut it short? Ken-Charles says...It is true life really does begin at 40. Trying out new styles surely will make you look younger, but you have to work that out with your stylist. Hair styles I will recommend to my 40-year-old client will depend on her personality and profession. Personally as a stylist I do not recommend bangs, as they block the forehead and eyes. A lady who wears glasses with a band is a no for me. Bangs are beautiful if it’s accentuates your face, rather than taking away from your beauty. Do not go too short at 40 because some short hair might make you look older. Ladies in their 40’s shouldn’t wear their hair too long. I’ll recommend chin length to just shoulder length. New hair colour does the tricks as well when done professionally

Kelly from Kensignton... I get lots of split ends, but I don’t want to cut my hair short, how do I get rid of them without losing my length? Ken-Charles says... The only remedy for split ends is a regular trim of 10 to 12 weeks. There is a huge differece between a trim and a full hair cut. When you trim your locks regularly it prevents your hair breaking off higher up the strand. Try and limit the amount of heat you apply to your hair. Always keep your hair moisturized. Sam from Port Elizabeth asks... I have thick, straight hair that goes frizzy no matter what I do. What is the best product to use on friz hair? Ken-Charles says... When you have frizzy hair, try as much as possible to keep away from high sodium in take in food. Use sodium chloride free shampoo and conditioner. Remember to slow down on the amount of heat you apply on your hair. Same as wanting to grow your hair. Washing your hair always is never a good idea. Your scalp produces natural oil that keeps a certain level of moisture in your hair. Weekly protein and oil treatment will help you deal better with the frizy. Remember all you need in your shampoo and conditioner are protein and moisture.

Your Questions Answered... Cailigh from Cape Town asks... In January I decided to cut my hair short pixie style, I hate it! How can I get my hair to grow faster? Ken-Charles says... I know a lot of hair product companies come up with new ads which say we have product to grow your hair faster and longer. Those are emotional marketing. The first recommendation is eat a healthy diet, with protein and vital vitamins and essential minerals. If your food intake does not have all these, taking some supplements will go a long way in growing your hair faster. Try and keep away from stress. Get your hair timed every 8 to 12 weeks. If you wait too long the splits are causing your hair to break off high up the strand. Do not over wash your hair when trying to grow your hair, because you would be washing off the essential natural oils that keep your hair healthy and strong. Always use conditioner after washing your hair. At the end, practice patience and your hair will grow.
