5-MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH TERENCE
From TERENZO HAIRDRESSING What I know now...
T
erence Jansen Van Vuuren owner of Terenzo reflects on the lessons that have carried him through the years… When did you start? Terenzo Hairdressing International opened in 1993. How many salons do you own? Three salons and we recently launched our new product range called ‘Terenzo Professional Haircare’. What made you go on your own? I had a unique concept which I believed in. If you could do one thing differently, what would it be? Be kinder to myself. Toughest decision I’ve ever had to make… Finding a balance between Johannesburg, Cape Town and International. The key to happiness is… Inner peace and contentment. I know my salon made it when… The honest truth is, one never knows that! You always have to stay on your toes, keep your feet on the ground and not become arrogant as that is a very dangerous space to find yourself in. So work hard, work smart and love what you do. The advice I’m glad I never took? People can speak fear into you about all the types of risk an entrepeneur has to take. There’s always 10 reasons why you shouldn’t take an opportunity but there are 20 reasons why you should, so I’m very happy I didn’t listen. What advice do you give young stylists? Understand that this is a career and not a job. Compete against yourself and not your colleagues. Focus on getting your hair skill up to the highest level possible for your creativity and never stop learning. What hairstyles and colours do we have to look forward to in 2016? What’s exciting for me about fashion is there are certain elements that do influence us that’s often inspired by celebrities or other fashion collections, however, most of the shapes, textures and colours are designed around the actual individual. People are not fashion clones anymore and I love it. Turn to page 61 to read more on Terence. www.terenzohairdressing.com

T
he biggest mistake ethnic women make, says Afrohaired darling Pearl Thusi, is believing there is something wrong with the hair they were born with. Too dry, too course, too brittle, too curly, too hard to manage and style and too wild. Women spend hours, days, months and even years trying to change the texture of their hair — ironing and chemically processing beautiful curls straight, applying tight extensions that break hair at the hairline and ultimately wrecking havoc on their locks in an attempt to fit in with what they believe society deems 'beautiful'. "Many ethnic women don't understand their hair. They don't understand their own history. They don't embrace their natural beauty. I'm not against weaves or extensions, I'm against damaging your hair. I do understand there are trends and fashions but you wouldn't burn your skin to achieve a

certain look so why would you ruin your hair?," says Pearl, who recently set out to create a natural hair care line, made in collaboration with Afro Botanics. The range consists of a wide selection of products made with natural ingredients, including avocado oil, baobab oil, marula, coconut oil and shea butter. "I had wanted to create my own hair care line for a while, after noticing that there really was a gap in the market for natural products dedicated to instantly soften and strengthen ethnic hair," says Pearl. "I had always struggled to find the right brand for me and, as a result, was constantly mixing and matching different products in search of the perfect hair product. I was looking for something with natural oils that wasn't made for Caucasian hair but rather marketed specifically for black hair. A product that wasn't full of silicone and that certainly wasn't trying to achieve a European
look (many products are relaxer conditioners and straighten the hair). I was looking for something that was going to nourish my hair from the root to the tip, so that it can be its 'own hair', and have its 'own identify', so to speak." Pearl says she had tried the Afro Botanic range before and really liked it. The range is by Ntombenhle Khathwane and uses natural botanical oils and conditioning agents. "I decided to make a brand for myself under the Afro Botanic label," says Pearl. "Black Pearl allows ethnic hair to keep its own identity and look gorgeous and healthy. Products currently in Pearl's range include Sulphate-Free Shampoo, Oil Blend, Conditioning Moisturiser Treatment spray and Hydrating Conditioner. "I have a lot of hair that is naturally very dry and thirsty and so my hydrating conditioner is a big part of keeping my hair moisturised and healthy. I use it as a co-wash to cleanse, to moisturise and detangle
my hair daily. I also use it as a deep conditioning moisturising treatment when my hair feels too dry and thirsty. "Pearl explains the conditioner contains a high dose of natural oils that penetrate the hair, as well as natural hair strengtheners that hydrate, protect and rebuild the hair. "I carry my spray everywhere. It isn’t just an ordinary spray, it is a daily treatment that adds moisture to my hair and delivers a cocktail of natural oils and nutrients that penetrate the hair to protect it from drying out, prevent split ends, de-tangle hair and strengthen it. As a woman who is proud of my African roots and one who uses natural oils on my hair, I chose to honour the age old African tradition of using natural botanical oils by producing a blend of the best oils used by our ancestors for centuries. This oil blend locks in moisture, absorbs easily, isn’t heavy on hair, gives hair shine, penetrates
hair to deliver nutrients. Unlike many other oils on the market, it does not contain silicones or mineral oil. In my line of work I use loads of products on my hair as well as sweat during workouts, I love using a mild sulphate-free cleanser to wash my hair as this allows my hair and scalp to breathe and to be able to absorb much needed nutrients and moisture. My shampoo contains tea tree oil and peppermint oil, which aid in stimulating hair growth and moisturising the scalp and hair." Pearl explains that while the products work symbiotically they also work individually, and best of all they are not tested on animals. "I specifically made the shampoo smaller than the conditioner because you're not supposed to use shampoo as often — actually only once or twice a week. I added tea tree and menthol because I like the invigorating feeling on my scalp. People of
colour prefer a shampoo that foams because it makes them feel like the product is really cleansing, and, as a result, they often use far too much in an effort to make it foam. With Black Pearl's shampoo only a little is needed and it produces a rich foam. The conditioner is infused with coconut oil — which is one of my favourite oils. The conditioner, or a leave-in oil, should be used daily or every second day because it helps balance the natural oils and prevents the hair from drying out. You can use it on a real weave (with natural hair). I believe that as women we should 'Own It!'. Own what makes us different and therefore beautiful and own our choices. This includes owning it when it comes to our hair choices. I own it when it comes to my natural hair, which means owning the shrinkage and the effort it takes to keep my hair in good condition." | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

ulti award-winner Angelo Vallillo of Zullo & Holland and The Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy who represented Britain in the Wella Trend Vision Awards in Berlin, is the first British hairdresser to be selected as a member of the Sabastian Professional Artistic Team. His shares his passion of being a hairdresser with us. How did you get into hairdressing? I had to give up a promising career in professional football after a bad injury, and just when everything seemed hopeless to me my uncle, Romano Zullo, asked me to come and work in his salon. I wasn't sure at first but he took me along to Salon International in London to see what it was all about. I loved it from the moment I walked in; the energy was like nothing I had felt before. How old where you when you started in the industry? I was 21. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing and open your own salon? I have been inspired by so many amazing people over the years. Creating my own brand, with education at its heart, was something I wanted to do from the start, and everything I’ve done since has been working towards that. I finally opened the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy in 2013 and it’s been amazing. We’ve had great people come to learn with us. How has the hair industry changed since you started? It’s growing, which is great to see. But there is still room for improvement. Young hairdressers should be pushed a lot more and given more opportunities. We have a challenging programme, linked to the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy, for our newest recruits, and because of it we now have some of the best hairdressers in the UK working for us. How many stylists do you have working for you? We have a team of 19 working across the Zullo & Holland salon and the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy. Who is the best celebrity you’ve styled and why? I can’t really pick one; they have all been amazing. | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

What makes your salon stand out from the rest? That’s easy – my team. It's taken me years to get to where everyone in the business is on the same page. They are the best, and the most important part of the salon. What makes a great hairdresser? A willingness to learn and to keep on learning is essential. Have you got any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry? Think about exactly what you want to get from the industry, then go for it. Set yourself goals and work hard. What is one product you can’t live without? Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity hairspray. What is one item every client should have? A waving tong. What styling products do you suggest? Zero Gravity hairspray, Volupt Spray gel and Microweb Fiber texturiser, all by Sebastian Professional What is your favourite perk of the job? No two days are ever the same.
Do you have a good work/home life balance? I try to keep everyone happy, but I’m not sure I manage it all the time. I love my work; what can I say? Colours to look forward to in 2016? The brighter the better. Styles to look forward to in 2016? Short hair will be huge. Look out for lots of cropped cuts and loads of texture. What inspired you to do the styles as seen in this article? I always want to push myself and bring something new to what I do. As part of that I always look for new models – I hate seeing collections with the same girls in them and the same hair. I want models who share my vision; then they inspire me. Awards you have won? The first was gold medal at Wella TrendVision in 2009. It seems such a long time ago now. Since then I’ve won Eastern Hairdresser of the Year twice (and I’m a finalist in the 2015 awards), and Hair magazine’s Salon Stylist of the Year three times. In 2014 I won Business Thinker of the Year in the Most Wanted awards for my Academy and the salon, and the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Signature Image of the Year. It’s been incredible. | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

ontouring has been the makeup trend that everyone, from professional make-up artists to teenagers learning from YouTube, has been following. But in practice, contouring can be a little challenging. The problem is: where do you get the time to shade, highlight and sculpt properly? Not to worry: strobing, the newest beauty craze, is likely more up your alley. What’s the difference? Unlike contouring, strobing uses just highlighter applied where light would naturally hit the face to brighten up the complexion. How do I do it? Dab highlighter on cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and lips. For extra oomph, apply it to the centre of the forehead, under the eyebrow bone, chin, the inner corners of eyes and the tip of the nose.
NG Class Demi Lovato
Out with the old, in with strobing.
Why strobing? If contouring has been challenging or way too intimidating, strobing is for you! It really brightens up the face and takes much less work, which means it’s harder to mess up. Any other benefits? Skin won’t feel suffocated by layers and layers of make-up in the summer heat, because you’re only using one extra product. Which celebs have been strobing? A lot of celebrities have gotten on the strobing band wagon. And we totally understand why — with their busy schedules, there’s not always time for fullon contouring. And strobing gives you the best of both worlds. Of course Kim K was one of the firsts to perfect this technique. But sisters Kendall Jenner and Khloé Kardashian, along with Chrissy Teigen, Joan Smalls and Demi Lovato weren’t far behind. Nearly everyone is embracing this new make-up trend. Why don’t you?

New Year is the best time to reinvent yourself. We all make resolutions to follow a better diet, read more books or go to the gym, but we often don’t follow through. Resolutions are hard, so why not resolve to update your beauty. The only difference is that the small changes to your beauty routine won’t kill you and are super simple to do. There’s no need to completely change your entire make-up routine, but you can easily add variety by adding one product per day to your beauty ritual. This will freshen up your look, so you can start the new year fresh faced.

SNOW WHITE FAUX FUR
Whether we like it or not, faux furs are winter staples and are here to stay. We can’t help but love one of the most luxe, warm and stylish trend. In spite of its appeal, it doesn’t mean you have to invest in real fur especially those that love their animal friends. This item transforms any dull and plain look by just adding the faux fur over. SKIN TO SKIN If you thought black was the only colour that was easy to pull off, well then you’re wrong as neutrals falls under the easiest trend to wear. Yes it may look dull and boring but all you have to do is mixed different tones together or add different tones or shades that would go with the colour. E.g. black, white, pastels and orange compliments neutral tones perfectly. Jersey Top:

STREET LIFE Street style comes with a lot of guts and risks. It’s all about embracing new trends and adding your on twist to it. So if you’re on the fence about trends then just add your own twist to it, don’t adapt to the trend. Let the trend adapt to your personality. And take risks, go out of the box and wear clothing you would never wear and add your own take to it.

Rocking Corporate Styles By Angela Bekiaris
Corporate can be sexy too.
T
he New Year is here, which means goodbye wavy, beach hair, and hello corporate looks and sophistication. We share 10 great styles for you to try out as you start a new job, get back into routine, or just need a little makeover to save your dry holiday locks.
1. Loose Locks Celeb Who Rocks It: Jennifer Lopez
It’s simple, it’s neat and it’s sexy — what more could you ask for to boost your confidence and get people talking, right? This look, say experts gives out the impression of a person who is very serious about their job yet respects both the profession and own self too much to allow bad hair. All you need is a curling iron and a little hairspray — and about 15 minutes in the morning to create the look.

CELEB STYLES | January / February 2016 |
2. Neat Half Up-Do Celeb Who Rocks It: Jada Pinkett Smith
This works better with straight hair, so if you have curls, perhaps straighten your hair first. It’s easy to do — just sweep the top section back and pin it down using a nice pin or a barrette.
3. Classy Pony
Celeb Who Rocks This: Ariana Grande
A ponytail enables you to wear your long or medium, straight or wavy hair casually pulled back. But we’re not talking about a messy ponytail for the gym or a quick trip to buy some groceries — you need to keep it neat, sleek and professional. Secure the pony with a band, then simply wrap the loose section around the base, to hide the band — this will create a glamorous look.
4. Zigzag Bob
Celeb Who Rocks It: Keira Knightley
If you have short hair already this one is simple — if not, maybe it’s time for a change? Whether you’re rocking a bob, lob or pixie cut, experts suggest zigzagging your parting — it’s playful yet professional and gives the short but a little something extra. And the best part is, it actually makes your hair look fuller and bouncier — perfect for an after-hours work function too. | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

5. Sleek With A Deep Side Path
Celeb Who Rocks It: Debra Messing
It’s sophisticated and let’s be honest… it’s just drop-dead gorgeous. Wearing your hair down always attracts attention, but experts suggest a simple yet classy difference to the norm — a sleek side parting can change your entire look. Even tucking in your hair — on the same side as the path — will look fab.
6. Centre Parting
Celeb Who Rocks It: Kim Kardashian
Whether you’re sporting a lob or the longest locks in history, this look works. It casual yet classy and works well if you have thick gorgeous tresses. Keep it a little messy, with subtle waves, and experts say it generally looks best the day after washing your hair.
7. The Serious Pixie Cut Celeb Who Rocks It: Anne Hathaway
Firstly make sure it suits the shape of your face. A pixie cut can be fun but you want a serious look for the office so add some mouse and give it a specific style. This look can be fun yet very ladylike and attract loads of attention.

CELEB STYLES | January / February 2016 |
8. Side-Swept Pony Celeb Who Rocks It: Elizabeth Banks
This look works best with shoulder-length, thick, straight hair — and a side fringe. Create a side part and leave your side fringe to frame your face. Keep your pony loose yet neat and make sure it’s in the middle of your head.
9. The Face Frame Celeb Who Rocks It: Natalie Portman
This sleek look is one of the favourites when it comes to professional hairstyles, simply because it’s common, it’s pretty and it’s easy top maintain. You just need a hairdryer to keep layers in the right direction and fringe in place.
10. A Neat Low Bun Celeb Who Rocks It: Salma Hayek
While a messy bun is great for a party, and a neat high bun is more formal, the low bun allows you to fit into the corporate world just right. It’s a great look for a day at the office, or a daytime work event. Tip: Secure the ends with a couple of bobby pins to keep them in place.

Be Present In Your Own Life
“Life means being in touch with who you are, with your needs and with your personal journey. It means holding yourself accountable regarding where you are and where you are going. In aviation terms it means ‘putting your own oxygen mask first before helping fellow passengers’! Guard your time jealously. Like you, there are millions of other people out there, who are rearing to go, especially at the beginning of the year. Everyone has ‘bigger’, ‘better’ and ‘sexier’ dreams and they are eager to take off. Everyone is vying for the client’s, the boss and for your attention. So be mindful that many other people are in the same situation as you. The question is, how are you going prioritize who to give your time to, when so many people are vying for your attention? Poor prioritisation of time could be quite costly. So watch out your calendar and your diary and guard your time jealously. Don’t always strive to kill two birds with one stone. Resist the urge to bite more than you could chew. Pace yourself and work within your capacity. Know when to seek extra capacity, and if you are lucky enough to have people working for you, don’t be afraid to empower staff and to delegate.”
This is the new year, new YOU! Stop Passing The Buck(s)
Donna McCallum (aka The Fairy Godmother): Entrepreneur, Life & Wealth Coach
"You’re probably not good with money because you’ve never learned about money. Your parents or school didn’t teach you about money. Learning about money and taking small actions over time will begin to build your confidence with money. Make a commitment to money that you will treat it with respect. Start learning about money – read about it, listen to radio shows on finance, speak to people about money. Seek out advice or coaching on how to improve your relationship with money – find a money course, a financial advisor or a money mentor. You are the only person who can be responsible for your money and until you realise this, very little will shift." | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Don’t be a ‘YES MAN’ The Immersive Experience
Francois du Toit: Professional Business & Wellness Coach 46
CELEB STYLES | January / February 2016 |
“Take some time to sit on the patio alone with an awesome glass of chardonnay — and enjoy it without interruption. Use this time to relax and process what events unfolded during the course of the day. Use this time to dream about the future, set some goals and just be aware of what you want from life. Find that one thing you have always wanted to do, preferably something that requires physical and mental strength and do it. That one thing that will completely put you out of your comfort zone, but it must be realistically achievable. Anything from going for a 5km or 10km walk to climbing Everest – you decide and then do it. Don’t be a ‘yes man’. Remember, it’s okay to say ‘no’. There are only 52 weekends in a year and any friend who does not really add value to your life is definitely not worth spending/sacrificing a Saturday night with; especially if they are high maintenance and draining. Saying ‘no’ to those invites is absolutely acceptable.”
Desi Horsman: Nutritionist, Speaker & Wellness Expert
The most important thing about goals is... having ONE!
STOP DIETING “While most diets don’t work, there are many that do, but if they are not part of your long term life style they will not be sustainable and all the weight you have lost returns with interest. Starving yourself, skipping meals, drastically cutting down calories, completely cutting out an entire food group or overindulging in another, will lead to nutritional deficiencies and imbalances in the overall functioning of your body. This in turn creates physical stress and ultimately leads to chronic ailments. There is no one size fits all when it comes to eating plans because we all have a unique biochemistry. It’s important to listen to your body and focus on eating lots of seasonal fruit and vegetables, unrefined and unprocessed healthy carbohydrates, grass fed free range animal protein, and healthy fats and oils. Always follow your gut. The healthy microbes in our gut play a significant role in our mood, behaviour, weight, digestion, hormones, immune system and inflammation in our bodies. This has been termed the gut-brain connection. Just about all chronic illnesses have inflammation as the common factor and our beneficial bacteria have the ability to reduce that. As much as 70 to 80 percent of our immune system sits in our gut, so this is the first area to address and keep healthy in 2016 and always. Our modern lifestyle with stress, an increase in processed foods with many chemical additives and sweeteners, caffeine, sugar, antibiotics, and the contraceptive pill — all destroy our friendly flora and we need to be constantly rebuilding it. A regular probiotic supplement and fermented foods will go a long way towards keeping your digestive tract healthy — which will keep your immune system strong, raise neurotransmitter levels, which in turn leads to a sharp, balanced and happy mind.”

Chris from PE asks… I’m only 19 years old and I’m going bald! I’m in such a panic about this, is there anything I can do to slow the process down? Lizel says… It’s better to start early treating
your hair correctly with the right products. L’Oreal has a fantastic product called ‘Serioxyl’ which is a stem cell technology that helps to regenerate new hair and anchor the existing hair in the follicle. This range consists of a shampoo, conditioner, mousse and serums used in the evening (Denser Hair) and in the morning (thicker hair). In just three months, hair density looks improved. Kate from Cape Town asks… I’m loving the topknot, but I always have flyaways on the side. What is the best product to use to keep my hair in place without it making my hair look stiff? Lizel says… We have two products which can be recommended for your topknot hairstyle. Firstly we recommend using L’Oreal Mythic Oil, Oil which is a nourishing oil for all hair types (It is not a serum, so the hair won’t go greasy) after you have created your knot you can spray your hair with L’Oreal ‘Fix AntiFrizz’ hairspray which keeps the humidity out and controls your flyaways!

Cameron from Soweto asks… My afro is completely out of control! I don’t like braids I love the natural look. What are the best shine products to use without weighing my hair down? Lizel says… L’oreal Mizani Supreme Oil product is a 99 percent naturally-derived formula with eight natural oils (sesame, jojoba, almond, avocado, apricot, olive fruit, sunflower and argan oils) that is silicone, mineral oil and paraben-free. Designed for any hair type, this ultra-light treatment penetrates and absorbs to treat and smooth the hair, so it is not greasy unlike silicones and mineral oil that only lay on the hair’s surface.

Tracey from England asks… I’m 35 years old and I would like to try something with my hair that makes me look younger. Should I chance the colour, get bangs or cut it short? I currently have long, straight hair. Lizel says… Bangs is the way to go. If it suits your facial shape, it brings an instant change to very long straight hair without being too drastic. The LOB (Longer Bob) style is very in and offers a style revival without being drastic. Add a few soft foils.

eet our favourite stylist Werner Botha, 28, from Terenzo Hairdressing International who became a hairdresser in 2008. He chats to Celeb Styles...
What makes Terenzo Hairdressing International so different from other salons? Location and standards of service. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing? My old hairdresser from high school and then when I met Terence, I was hooked. What makes a great hairdresser? Someone who can consult with you, hear your thoughts and ideas, include their own and mould everything into the perfect style that is exactly what you needed at that point in your life. A creative listener who is caring and excited about you and what is available to you. How do you deal with difficult clients? Patience, sense of humour and loads of red wine after work! What is the one item every client should have? A Veaudry flat iron. What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? This is definitely dependent on the client but I generally recommend Terenzo Professional Moisture Rush Shampoo and Conditioner for all hair types. It is light and moisturising and smells divine! What styling products do you suggest? Terenzo Professional Liquid Gold oil and Terenzo Professional Silk Fibre paste for shine, texture and shape. How has the hair industry changed since you started? We are past the dead straight and over-textured looks at last and now into natural shapes and textures. We are much more technical in our consultations and very social media driven. Name a few hair tips you swear by? Always towel dry your hair before applying conditioner or a masque. Always use a thermal hair protector in general. Always have a good bottle of hairspray at your side. Name the products you cannot live without? Terenzo Professional Liquid Gold Oil Redken Forcefull 23 Hairspray L’Oreal Absolute Repair Lipidum Thermal Protectrice Have you got any advice for someone wanting to start in the industry? Come to a Terenzo Open Day; apply to a first rate College – the fees will pay for themselves once you

How to crack the hair code.
L
et’s own up: we all want to experiment with hair. Whether you feel like more of a redhead than a blonde or getting tired of the dull brown hair colour you’ve had since high school, playing around with hair colour and finding the best shade for you can be fun. Even if you only stick to semi-permanent hair colour, why not change things up? Follow our foolproof guide to get the perfect hair shade for your skin tone.
Step 1 The first step to your dream hair colour is to determine your skin tone and undertone. Skin tones range from fair to dark. Chances are you already know yours from the foundation you buy. Simple. Then there’s skin undertone. It can be cool, warm or neutral. There are two ways to determine this: Method 1: Look at how skin reacts to the sun. If you tan easily and hardly burn, skin contains more melanin and the skin tone is likely warm or neutral. If the opposite is true: skin burns and doesn’t tan, there is less melanin and therefore the skin tone will be cool. Some
DARK
women with very dark, ebony skin may not burn easily, but still have a cool skin tone. If this is you, try method 2. Method 2: Hold a white paper up to your face and look into a mirror, see how your skin looks in contrast to the white paper. If skin appears yellowish or sallow you have a warm undertone. If skin looks pink, rosy or blueish-red, then you have a cool undertone. The Cheat Sheet: A quick and simple way to determine undertone is to look at veins on the inside of your wrist. If they look green, you are a warm tone. If veins look blue/purple in colour you are cool in skin tone.
Beyoncé
Dark skin tones with warm undertones should think rich when choosing colour. Mohogany and toffee are ideal for enhancing skin tone. Shades with warm casts work best on this skin colour, because they enhance rather than clash with darker skin’s warm tones. Infuse new life into boring black by opting for deep tones of darkest auburn.
| January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES
51
OLIVE To balance any green undertones in skin, try warmer hues, like auburn. For example, Penélope’s colour is rich without being harsh, because her warm dark hair is a few shades lighter than black to bring out the best of her olive complexion.
Miranda Kerr
Freida Pinto
Penélope Cruz
MEDIUM Medium with cool undertones, like Kate Middleton, should try caramel. It works, because caramel adds extra warmth to cool undertones and help give skin a glow. Avoid shades that are either too light (they can leave skin and eyes looking dull) or too dark (dark shades can accentuate under-eye circles).
Step 2 Now the fun begins. Remember that finding the perfect shade is most often a journey. It takes a lot of exploration and experimenting to find the perfect hue for you, but Celeb Styles have got you covered, so you can dye with more confidence.
COOL UNDERTONE FAIR SKIN
Taylor Swift
Ivory and porcelain skin is great for blue based colours, whether it be platinum blonde or striking brunette. It takes guts to try warm colours with pale skin, but this can really complement freckles and yellow skin tones. Play on the contrast between hair and complexion with unusual colours, like bright red.
52
Krysten Ritter CELEB STYLES | January / February 2016 |
Emma Stone
Jessica Chastain
DARK Dark skin plus a blue base? Get the best look with deep, dark tones, like inky black. If you choose a warmer colour, it could clash with your natural skin tone, leaving you looking washed out, so tread carefully. Lupita Nyong’o
Warm Undertones Fair
Rutina Wesley
Peachy skin benefits from warmer hues, such as honey and strawberry blonde. Golden, as opposed to ashy shades, give some extra warmth to the complexion, which will make you look awake and refreshed.
MEDIUM
Amanda Seyfried
Zuri Hall
Rachel McAdams
Carrie Underwood
Sun-kissed skin tones benefit from golden caramels. Try adding some copper into the mix too. These highlights, when placed on top of the head, will frame the face, while keeping the colour soft and brightening eyes.
OLIVE Complement the warmth in your complexion with violet-based hues, like mocha or dark chocolate. Furthermore, dark colours make light eyes pop, but black would be much too harsh on women with warm colouring. If you have nice lips or eyes, dark hair will enhance these features. But if you have dark circles under your eyes, dark hair colour might bring this out. Fabuloso: From EVO: Price on request

Oops… My Stylist Did It Again! We talk celebrity hair disasters at their worst.
By Angela Bekiaris
W
e’ve all had at least one hair disaster over the years. But when you’re a Hollywood star who is constantly in the limelight, a disastrous hairstyle could leave you in some serious trouble — not just with your stylist, but with the Fashion Police, too.
Kaley Cuoco
The Big Bang Theory actress said ‘fake bangs almost ruined her hair’. The star was slammed in 2013 when she showed up to the SAG Awards with bangs, with reviewers calling locks ‘far from bangin’ and compared it to helmet hair. Chatting on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Cuoco explained that she wore fake bangs to hide a black eye and six stitches received on set of The Big Bang Theory. “I wanted to wear them because it covered my eye and I was really insecure about this huge black eye,” said Cuoco. “These bangs who I’ve named Bev almost ruined my entire career.”
56
CELEB STYLES | January / February 2016 |
Sienna Miller
The British-born star has tried out cornrows, a Winona Ryder pixie cut — which she says resembled a helmet — and ‘experimented with rave colours’ from pink with white streaks to green. She says about her home colouring: “I once used henna to dye my hair brown for an audition, thinking I was being clever because it’s all natural. Little did I know it was the worst thing I could’ve done as it coats the follicles so nothing else can penetrate and I ended up having to put ketchup on it for about a year to get rid of the green tinge.”
Kate Hudson
The How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star’s poodle perm was just shocking. We don’t know what she was thinking — or why — but we’re glad she got rid of it fast.
Madonna
The queen of pop had a rare ginger fringed moment back in 1998. Thank goodness, it was very, very short-lived.
8
Worst Celebrity Hair Extension Disasters
Jennifer Aniston "After Friends I wanted a different look, so I cut my hair. Obviously, I wasn't thinking clearly," she said. "So I decided to have a couple of extensions, never knowing you end up with 400 things in your head that cause your hair to break off. Nothing destroys your hair faster than extensions. It's taken a year and a half to get my hair grown out,” she said at the time.
Selena Gomez
Selena says growing up she had her share of bad hair days — she actually describes it as a bad hair phase. “My biggest hair mistake is when I was younger and I was figuring out how to use a flat-iron,” Selena has revealed. “I used to think that just because visually I could see that this hair was straight that the back didn’t necessarily have to be straight, so for the entire sixth grade, I only straightened the front of my hair. That wasn’t really my proudest moment.”
Britney Spears She’s had her moments when it comes to hairstyles - especially when she shaved it all off. But while in preparation for her Piece Of Me tour in Las Vegas, Britney’s hair was at its worst. There were nest of tendrils and visible scalp nightmares which she's had in the past.
Miley Cyrus
When the star swapped her shoulder length locks for a seriously short new ‘do, she left fans devastated. ‘‘LOVE my hair feel so happy, pretty, and free,’ she tweeted at the time. Well, we all thought otherwise.
Julia Roberts
Julia experimented with red tones in 1990 — and truth is, Pretty Woman got really ugly.
Lindsay Lohan The actress left us speechless with her dodgy two-toned fiasco. While the colour doesn't have to be a complete match, it must blend in. Pamela Anderson The former Baywatch babe’s hair extensions left her with visible bonds protruding from the top of her head as she tried to go for a signature voluminous look with the help of a few extra strands.
Katie Holmes
Katie suffered a hair malfunction back in 2001, when she chopped her locks into a very blunt bob with a forehead skimming fringe.
Gwen Stefani
Back in her No Doubt rock-chick days, she showcased every colour, cut and style under the sun. Not flattering at all.
Victoria Beckham She might be one of the most stylish women on the planet but Posh Spice once had bonds too close to the hairline and extensions that weren't the right colour match. Nicole Richie Back in the early 2000's Nicole Richie sported some questionable dip dye hair extensions. Luckily she’s over her wild and adventurous side.
Christina Aguilera
The Voice judge has often opted for unusual hairstyles, but her permed hair extensions with straight pink streaks in 2001 were the worst. Along with her dark locks, awful afro and wet-look curls, of course.
Paris Hilton The hotel heiress looked more like a hobo with her straggly hair extensions during the early 2000s. While she has millions to get the job done correctly, it seems even in Hollywood can things go wrong.
Kelly Osbourne
Kelly has definitely had some shockers in her time — from dark, to short and just plain scary!
Beyoncé Even Queen B can have a bad hair day and her extra-long braided hair extensions were just that. They were straggly and impractical — and far from natural.

The Senate — Owned by Stephan Pietersen
THE BRO CODE By Vanessa Papas
Who would have known some of the hottest hair salons in South Africa are run with brute!
L
ong gone are the days when grooming, body image and beautiful locks were only a desire of the fairer sex. Today men are heading off to salons to glam their look with edgy cuts, tints, highlights, and modern styles. Male owned hair salons are also on the rise with some of the top salons in South Africa owned and managed by men. We take a look at our favourite four.
Stephan Pietersen realised from a young age that he was naturally artistic yet never in his wildest dreams did he ever think he’d land up having a career in the arts, none the less in hairdressing! “I was very indecisive about my career path so I got a job in a salon sweeping floors and learning to wash hair just to pass time. I soon realised one of my greatest strengths was my creativity and the way I easily interacted with people. I decided to become an apprentice and learn as much as I possibly could about the hair industry,” Stephan says. “After training I went on my own. I felt the need to create my own brand. I rented chairs in salons for nine years, building relationships with clients and suppliers and learning the ins and outs of the industry and business in general, before I opened The Senate Hair Salon, Montecasino, in Johannesburg in 2011.” The Senate’s dictionary meaning is ‘the meeting of two parties’, which is exactly what the Salon is all about — clients and hairstylists. Stephan designed and decorated the Salon with everything he loves. It is absolutely beautiful and overlooks Montecasino’s garden full of red geraniums and white iceberg roses. The success of The Senate, says Stephan, is a result of love. “I love everything about my Salon — my staff loves working here and our clients love coming here, and it’s not just for our cappuccinos! I believe beauty inspires beauty and love inspires love,” he adds. “At The Senate our focus is beautiful, healthy hair and that’s why I teamed up with Wella as my superior colour brand. They are recognised as industry professionals and was the ideal partner supplier. We also stock other premium retail products. I love my business and it has motivated me to challenge myself to expand after four-and-half years. In November 2015 I opened The Senate Hair Salon Camps Bay in Cape Town, where I am now based.” The Camps Bay salon is more of a ‘boutique salon’, giving more individual attention to clients’ needs and has just as much love in the design and decorating. The very distinctive purple walls and silver antique mirrors echo the Johannesburg branch. When asked about his favourite cuts and styles Stephan says every time he picks up a pair of scissors, or bottle of styling product, he ‘unleashes his creativity’! “I love everything I do from cutting and colouring, to styling and even a good old perm! My success as a stylist is built on always trying to improve and offering only the best advice and quality styling to each client visiting my salons.”

Jawad Maphoto has never been one to follow the crowd. Owner of Lajawi Beaute Café — a salon in the heart of Melrose — he and his team are acclaimed for their astounding quality in hair artistry. With 12 years of experience in the hair and beauty industry, Jawad has a string of accolades to his name. He made the top six finalists of the 2012 L’Oreal Colour Trophy held in South Africa and judged in Paris at L’Oreal headquarters. He has worked alongside numerous internationally acclaimed hairstylists throughout his career, not to mention the trendy American hairstylist Ursula Stephen (Rihanna’s stylist) and Johnny Wright (Michelle Obama’s stylist). Locally he works closely with multi award-winning hairstylist, Saadique Ryklief (his mentor). He is consistently featured on hair styling trends shoots on glossy pages of leading local and international magazines. While you’d be forgiven for thinking Jawad’s life has always been glamorous, he admits he had to claw his way to the top. “It really was not an easy journey to embark on, from selling sweets and clothes on the streets of Atteridgeville, part a township located
to the west of Pretoria in 2002 to opening a spaza shop (an informal convenience shop business), anything to make ends meet. Later, I studied with Ethno Care, a hair salon based in Pretoria CBD and that’s when things starting falling into place.” Jawad had aimed to pursue a career as an electrical engineer but as time went on he found himself sweeping floors at a local salon in Lebowakgomo in Limpopo, which his mom helped start up. “From there, I discovered my love for hair and began to associate myself with experts in the hair industry, which in turn motivated me to open up my own salon,” he says. “With the help of a good friend/ mentor I managed to register Lajawi Beaute Café. I saved money from my monthly earnings to also help contribute to the start-up of my business. Today Lajawi Beaute Café caters primarily to the black market.” Jawad says the biggest challenges along his journey has been consistency on training and having the right staff, educating clients on their hair regimes and staying relevant in the market. His greatest joys include creating trends and working with A-List celebrities. | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

BLOKES HAIR SALON
Owned by Brian Oosthuizen
Blokes Hair is a small, personal driven boutique hair salon in the heart of Green Point, Cape Town rated by Cape Town Magazine as one of Cape Town’s top 10 hairdressers for men. Opened in 2011 by owner and ‘Queen Of Cuts’, Brian Oosthuizen, Blokes has become known to Capetonians and especially men who appreciate a haircut that oozes passion. The vintage pictures and leather wingback give the place an antiquated charm without losing any of its modern sophistication. Brian has travelled far and wide on his journey to hair perfection. Starting in Bloemfontein, and then onto London, Brian started as a receptionist in a salon and eventually began professionally styling hair. He then returned to bustling Cape Town where he was recently placed as one of the top 10 stylists in Cape Town by GQ magazine. He has also been featured in publications such as Cape Town Magazine, M magazine and the Sunday Times. Brian works with many international men’s magazines to maintain the high standards set by Blokes Hair. He has managed to grow the salon into one of the most amazing and entertaining spots in Cape Town. Blokes Hair recently
introduced an online booking system, it’s own exciting organic product range and now has two fantastic new stylists, Jason and Jordy. They were both hand-picked by Brian so as to maintain the exceptional standards of hair-cutting and service that he has become famous for since starting Blokes Hair in 2011. Together, the Blokes Hair Team lead the way with men’s haircuts in the city and look forward to expanding the business in the near future. “I’m not into manufacturing hair,” adds Brian. “I believe that cutting hair should be an experience where the client receives a hairstyle custom-made to fit their unique personality and panache. My haircuts last for months. They grow out in the style that my clients prefer.” A big trend at the moment, says Brian, is the business haircut. “A cut that is reasonably short on the sides so it lasts six to eight weeks and not too much length in front, also minimal styling products to avoid the hair looking greasy. A lot of guys tend to put too much wax in front. When you’re styling your hair distribute the wax throughout both your hands and start applying at the back of the hair, then towards the middle and then your last stroke in front.”

Terenzo Hairdressing International — Owned by Terence Jansen Van Vuuren
Salon Details
26 Bompas Road, Johannesburg, Tel: (011) 341-0261
Terence Jansen Van Vuuren, owner and founder of Terenzo Hairdressing International, is no ordinary hairdresser. Driven by the motto ‘never stop learning’, Terence has dedicated his life to changing the lives of others with his magical wand. Having studied hairdressing for three years, mostly in England, Terenzo went on to open Terenzo Salon in 1993. Since then, his business and his career have gone from strength to strength. Terence’s unique approach to cutting techniques and colour application is what distinguishes him from his peers and certifies him as a ‘master extraordinaire’ at the forefront of the art of hairdressing. He has many feathers in his cap including having won the coveted Colour Trophy Award — the longest running hairdressing event in the world. Terence’s international career took off when he was chosen to be part of an incredible international team of ambassadors for L’Oreal Professional and was one of 40 artists chosen worldwide, travelling and representing the brand all around the world. “I like to play with textures. People immediately think that texture means a lot of pieces, but even a smooth look is a texture. A bob with a smooth surface is texture,” says Terence. “I am driven by artistic energy, and have always thought laterally, taking the obvious and by adding a simple twist creating a new concept, which leaves an indelible mark on the world of hair. I have worked with some of the world’s leading talents and in turn have trained some of hairdressing’s most skilled stylists. Today, I continue being a brand custodian and spreading my love and passion for the profession and brand wherever I travel, inspiring other hairdressing professionals to do the same.” Subsequently Terenzo International Hairdressing Professionals have created a large client following through hard work and dedication and later built up a brand of epic brand custodians over the years. Terenzo’s dynamic and creative hairdressing group has expanded and Terence — together with his talented team — now operates out of three branches based in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where they are continuously evolving creatively and standing at the forefront of style innovation. | January / February 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Score With These Great Tips • Make sure that you get a haircut that suits your face shape before cutting. A professional stylist will advise you on what cut will suite you best. • Do not use too much wax as it can leave the hair looking greasy and it can sometimes be difficult to wash it out. • Use cleansing shampoo the remove styling products. • Use professional products because they hold and make the hair style last longer and the shelf life is longer too. • Cornrows shows much better detail on blond hair so go lighter if you want yours to look as good as David's.

The Pompadour
The Blond Suede Head
Shave the hair back and sides with a number 1 and fade it 1-and-a-1/2 going into a number 2. Leave the hair between five and 12 centimetres long. Product: Use a blow dryer to get volume on top and then use Kevin Murphy Gritty Business (a blend of Bentonite Clay and Kukui Nut Oil with old-fashioned Bee’s Wax) to give it a hold and keep the volume.
Use a number 3 clipper guard to shave the hair so it’s the same length all around and bleach your hair to platinum blond. The colour must look the same and even throughout — no darker or lighter patches. Product: Use Joico Color Endure Violet Sulfate-Free shampoo and conditioner to prevent the hair from changing colour, and keeping the ‘icy’ colour sassy, not brassy.
Mohawk
The Mohawk is one of David’s most famous looks. Shave the side with number zero on your clipper and take it almost all the way up to the top, leaving a thick strip of hair. Cut the top with scissors and shape. Product: Use a Moroccan Oil Moulding Cream Wax to style the hair. It is a very workable styling cream infused with thickening fibres that create natural-looking texture and definition for multiple styles and will hold the style for longer without leaving any residue. Expert tip: As trendy as it is, the Mohawk hairstyle doesn’t suite every man. If it’s not the right look for you, rather opt for The Faux Hawk instead. While the Mohawk allows for the displaying of a long-length crest sprouting from a shaved head, the Faux Hawk relies on having a short-length crest running from front to back on
The Buzz Cut
A buzz cut is any of a variety of short hairstyles usually designed with electric clippers. This is one of the easiest Beckham hairstyles to copy and it works well for most head shapes and hair types. It is also especially great on gents with thinning hair. Use a number 1-and-1/2 clipper guard and shave your whole head all around until the hair is the same length. Product: This is a very low maintenance look. Most people don’t really need a styling product but if you have thinning hair you can use Osmo Matte Clay Wax to get rid of shine on the scalp and make the hair look a bit fuller.
The Side Part
This is a classic look. The hair is tapered at the back and sides, blending to a slightly longer top. It can also be quite texturised, as David prefers to wear it, or it can be polished and clean. Product: Use Night Rider Wax from Kevin Murphy and style as desired. The Wax provides a tough hold and a rough matte texture for short or choppy looks. You can finger comb it or use a brush or a comb to style it with a side parting.
Cornrows
While a poll revealed many believe this style was one of David’s ‘fashion fails’ we think it looked great on him. This is a style David sported in 2003 on his visit to South Africa. Section the hair in small rows starting from front all the way to the nape. Cornrow or braid the hair on base to the last tip and secure with transparent hair elastic band. Product: Use a ghd hair spray to keep the hair in place and to give it a firmer look.
Wacky fact! David recently revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson forced him to shave off his famous mohawk hairstyle in the Wembley Stadium toilets! Ferguson was furious when David pitched up at the home of football with the cut ahead of their Charity Shield clash with Chelsea in 2000 and ordered him to get the clippers out before the game. “I was in the dressing room with an hour to go before kick off when Sir Alex Ferguson saw it and made me shave it off,” Beckham recalls. “I said no at first and then I saw his face change very quickly so I went and shaved it off in the toilet. He was very strict.
