pring is one of my favourite times of the year and it also means summer is just around the corner. Green grass and flowers start growing and the leaves on the trees are coming back to life, warm days and nights, it’s such a divine time. It’s also time to pack away your winter wardrobe and it might even give you an excuse to go shopping for summer clothes. In this issue we have rounded up fresh spring fragrances on pages 20 and 21 as well as new beautiful flower power hairstyles from page 26. Why not try a new hairstyle and clean out your make-up drawer and treat yourself to some new beauty products. There is nothing like spoiling and making yourself feel like a star. Talking about beauty… Bonang Matheba is one of the most stunning ladies around. This SA Icon chatted to us about her beauty, fashion and health. She is also the South African Brand Ambassador for Revlon; turn to pages 6 and 7 to read her interview. There are loads of beautiful extension options for women with ethnic hair. In this issue we take a look at the secret of

finding the right style, length, texture and thickness from page 10 we also give you a few care tips to keep your weave in tip top shape. Celeb Styles cannot survive without our stylists — we need your input!! We also love seeing the creative styles you do. Send us your pictures so that we can share your work with our readers. Like Steven from Absolut Hair did on pages 48 and 49 he also answered our readers’ questions — as well as his summer trends. Mika’eel from Headmasters Hair Company in Durban shares his fabulous salon on page 52, what caught my attention was his special staff member, Alex — an African Grey, well that is defintely a reason for me to pop in and visit Headmasters Hair Company next time I’m in Durban. Q. My body is so

white after winter. What are the best products to use to get a summer glow without going into the sun? Sue

Dear Sue A. You have come

to the right place as in this issue of Celeb Styles magazine we have done a feature on how to bronze your body and what products to use on page 53. We hope this helps you out!

Wash your hair with vinegar at least once a week. Don’t be worried about the smell or making your hair super dry — that’s not the case! Mix one part vinegar and one part water after shampooing your hair. Slowly pour the vinegar mixture all over your hair allow to set for several minutes, then rinse. You can use conditioner if you want to after. Try doing this once a week, there is a true clean feeling after!

She’s making waves in SA — and it’s not hard to see why.

W

e chatted to Afternoon Express presenter Bonang Matheba — without a doubt one of SA’s most beautiful women — about fashion, health and beauty. The 28-year-old television host, radio personality and business woman, is making waves on screen and off. Tell us about your role as Revlon South Africa Brand Ambassador. My role as Revlon South African Brand Ambassador is to embody the brand by endorsing, providing the brand with credible promotion and visibility. I am greatly involved in all promotions for Revlon, be it TV ads, radio ads, mall activations, etc. Basically I am the face of Revlon SA, meaning I am involved in all they do. What does beauty mean to you — and have you always been one to wear make-up and have your hair done before leaving home? Beauty is being so happy inside it shows in everything you do, wear and even your face. The glow, the confidence, humbleness just adds up to one beautiful human being. I always leave my house presentable and comfortable. Sometimes I just put foundation, eye-liner and a lip balm and when I am going out for work, I do full-on make up. My hair is always done though — there is no way I can go out with my hair messed up. Tell us about the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban, and what you wore. The MAMAs were put together so nicely and the atmosphere and vibe in Durban was also amazing. I loved my two outfits by the one and only Gert–Johan Coetzee. I was wearing the black jumpsuit with a cape for the red

carpet and a red dress for the awards show. I also wore all my Revlon products.

By Angela Bekiaris What are your health and fitness secrets? I really don’t have any secrets, I just try by all means to eat healthy, keep away from carbs and sugar and drink a lot of water. Luckily I do not have any weight issues so that just makes things easier for me. Who inspires you in the fashion world? I get my fashion inspiration from a lot of people, it is never from one person. I love Zendaya’s fashion sense — her style is very fearless, unique and classy. I love almost everything she puts on. Rihanna also challenges the norm. Do you feel a lot of pressure being in the limelight? I have learnt not to pressurise myself, and also not allow myself to be bullied by the ‘limelight’. I just do what I have to do and keep my life private. All those who want to speculate should, someone has to do it. I am in love with my job — the limelight is just part of it. When it comes to your hair, which styles do you love most and how do you keep your tresses looking fabulous? Every hairstyle I have on means I really love it. I love my Malaysian straight weave, lace bounce coil wig and braids — aka locks and tresses. As much as I love the braids, most campaigns I do require weaves hence it is not all the time you see me with them. So when I go on vacation, I usually rock them as they are so easy to maintain. Brazilian, Peruvian, Indian, Malaysian — there are loads of beautiful extension options for women with ethnic hair, for every pocket and every style. The secret is finding which style, length, texture, thickness and type is right for you. By Vanessa Papas

J

ust like no two heads of hair are the same, no two weaves are created equally either. There are many weave options on the market and while there are similarities in the fact that all weaves have natural movement and don’t shed and tangling and that they come in curly, wavy

or straight textures, there are loads more differences. We chat to two well known ethnic hair salons — Volure in Ferndale, Randburg (at the Bram Fischer Shopping Centre), and Candi & Co in Randburg Square Mall in Johannesburg, and to get the inside scoop on weaves.

Questions To Ask Yourself Before A Weave

5

Reasons To

Weave

• You can wear it long, tie it up, shake it up or leave it loose if you want. • Low Maintenance. • Fabulous while growing your natural hair and creating length. • Great protective style for your natural hair. • Makes starting your hair growth journey and hair-line recovery manageable.

10

CELEB STYLES | September / October 2015 |

• Do you want it long or short? The desired length determines how many inches you buy. 10 to 12 inches is about shoulder length on most people. • What is your hair type? If you plan on leaving some of your hair out and blending it with the weave, that may determine what type of hair you get. • Take into consideration the style you want. Do you want to wear the hair straight most of the time. If so, don’t get curly. Do you want hair that you can wear straight and curly? You wouldn’t want to buy synthetic hair because usually, you can’t curl it. If you want something that gets wavy when wet you’ll have to buy wet and wavy hair. • You also want to get a colour that is the same

colour as your natural hair. However, if you are getting a full or closure weave then the texture and colour won’t matter. • What is your price range? In general you get what you pay for so the more you spend the better the quality. • How long do you want it to last? If you are looking for something long term you may want to buy 100 percent human hair, or Remy hair if you want it to last even longer. Remy hair is the highest quality hair. The hair can be coloured, cut, heat styled and chemically treated. This is due to the hair cuticles being intact (they all run in the same direction), which prevents tangling and shedding. • Ask your stylist whether your weave comes with a guarantee.

Top Tip

Six to eight weeks is recommended if you are trying to grow your natural hair. The maximum length of time you should wear a weave is four months. This time frame even applies if your

weave still looks good. Your hair underneath is the main concern and the longer you leave it, the more you risk knotting, breaking and dreading of your own natural hair, which can lead to serious hair loss.

Different Types Of

Weaves

Malaysian: Straight Malaysian hair is very shiny but beware, the shine does fade after a few washes. The hair itself originates from Malaysia in Southeast Asia or has the same texture of typical Malaysian Hair. Malaysian Hair is a very popular option. Sadly, despite being soft and silky, this hair is very fine and usually looks 'limp and lifeless' if worn incorrectly. It blends best with relaxed textures and woman with very fine hair. The benefit of this hair is that it is extremely manageable. This hair has an extremely sleek feel. It can hold curls very well without the use of hair products. The hair is generally very dark brown to black, and it does not frizz easily, making it easy to maintain. Malaysian Hair is sleek, easy to tease and volumize. Popular styles with the hair include a clean full front fringe up to the eyebrows; a full natural ponytail style; and a half head side curl. Indian: Indian is next in order of coarseness. Indian Hair originates from India or is similar to hair typically found in India. Indian Hair is typically naturally airy, light and bouncy and can easily be styled and curled. The hair moves effortlessly with minimal products. It also blends with most hair textures. You can find Indian Hair ranging from silky to lightly course. Compared to Brazilian and Peruvian Hair, Indian Hair is easier to maintain and manage because of its lighter texture. While each person’s style preference is different, virgin Indian Hair usually goes well with upstyles away from the face, full fringes, and crochet bridal styles. Indian hair comes in a variety of styles such as straight, wavy and tight curly. Because it is dense it is a good match for ethnic women's hair textures. It is great if you want to wear your hair straight and is versatile. The coarseness helps it hold curls. Select from straight, body wave and deep wave. Brazilian: Brazilian hair extensions are more coarse than Indian and because of that, hold a curl even better. Brazilian Hair has gained a reputation as the most sought after texture and is in high demand because

of its softness, durability and thickness. It is extremely luxurious and very soft, with a lot of body and natural shine. Because of its thickness is less likely to frizz and holds curls longer than other textures. That also helps it blend well with our hair textures. You need around three bundles for a nice full look. Select from straight, natural wave, body wave, deep wave, deep curl, kinky curl and Afro curl. Brazilian Knots are a strand by strand micro bonding installation technique. In this method several strands of loose bulk hair are overlaid onto your natural hair and hand-tied with an elastic thread. The installation process can take five to seven hours but the results are definitely worth the wait. It's important to note that while Brazilian Knots are also called Italian knots and elastic fusion, the process is essentially the same. This type of micro bonding is a very popular option for our clients who want extensions but don’t want a weave. Brazilian Knots provide the same result as fusion micro bonding techniques (such as keratin bonding or hot glue techniques) but without the use of adhesive products or heat. Peruvian: Peruvian Hair has the same texture as hair typically from Peru in South America. Peruvian Hair is thick, durable and can be straightened and curled repeatedly. Because of this, Peruvian Hair is usually considered the ultimate multi-purpose hair. This hair is coarser in texture than Indian or Brazilian Hair, and also has a low to medium shine. Peruvian Hair provides instant volume and usually becomes wavy when washed. All of Volure’s Peruvian weaves are Virgin and Remy. This means that there has been little to no processing done to the hair, leaving the hair in a healthy and natural state. This quality is what enables the hair to be bleached and coloured easily. Remy means that cuticles (which strengthen and protect the hair) are aligned in the same direction from root to end. This cuticle alignment minimises tangling and breakage associated with lower quality hair. | September / October 2015 | CELEB STYLES

How Are

Weaves Applied?

Weaves can be applied in many ways. Some application methods use a needle and thread, some use hot glue. As you would imagine, each can exact its own toll. It can be tricky deciding which method to use, which is why it’s important to discuss in length what each method entails with your hair stylist.

How To Wash Your

Weave

• Speak to your hair stylist about investing in a brush specifically designed for weaves to help prevent breakage. • Use a width comb and gently comb through the weave to loosen any knots or tangles. • Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner every second or third day. Washing your hair daily strips it of natural oils and can actually cause you hair to be limp and greasy. You can use over-the-counter shampoos or salon shampoos. The important thing is using product that is sulfate free.

14

CELEB STYLES | September / October 2015 |

• Wash the weave starting from top to bottom by gently massaging the shampoo into the roots. It’s important that you keep the hair straight while washing it. This helps avoid causing matting and tangling. Don’t forget underneath your hair. • Use a good quality conditioner and leave it in for the recommended time before rinsing out. • Gently towel dry the hair by blotting it — never rub or pull at the hair as hair is especially vulnerable when wet. Dry naturally or with a hair drying on a low heat setting.

General Prices Per Length/Bundle Weaves are generally priced from R850 upwards, depending on how much hair is needed, whether curly or straight, and excluding application. Length 10 inches 12 inches 14 inches 16 inches 18 inches 20 inches 22 inches 24 inches 26 inches

Care Tips

• Don’t plait your hair if your hairline is weak and your natural hair is already damaged. • Wash, condition and moisturise your scalp and natural hair before any braid application. • You’ll feel a bit of discomfort for the first few days after you have your hair done but the plaits should not be so tight that you’re in pain. Tightness can eventually weaken your natural hair and cause hairline breakage so ask your hairdresser to go easy. • Cover your head with a silk scarf when sleeping, or use a silk or satin pillowcase to prevent tangling and hairline breakage caused by the friction when your head rubs against your pillow. • Use sheen spray to prevent synthetic fibre from matting. • Shampoo and condition your hair as usual every week or two and make sure it’s completely dry to avoid mould. • If you work up a sweat, spritz antiseptic spray to prevent a build-up of bacteria, which can cause diseases on the scalp. • After removal, give your natural hair a break and avoid chemical treatments, weaves or braids for a week or so.

P

ink and peach are the must haves for your spring makeup kit in 2015. Every girl needs some pink in her wardrobe and in her vanity. This is non-negotiable! Pink lips (or cheeks) instantly wake you up when you aren’t feeling your best. Peach is a colour that is often forgotten, but not this year. We know peach is sweet. But it is also great at warming up your complexion without going full-on bronze. It’s the perfect multi-use colour. And the easiest way to try it is in a creamy formula. Creams tend to settle and fade throughout the day, so make sure to choose a shade a little more intense than you want the final look to be. Put these two pretty colours together and you have an on-trend spring make-up palette.

DITCHING THE SWEET LIFE

What do Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry all have in common, aside from being gorgeous Hollywood starlets? They’ve all given their sweet addiction the boot.

S

ugar bashing is all the rage these days, and with good cause. Forget Michael Myers in Halloween, Dr Evil in Austin Powers or Voldemort in Harry Potter Series. The biggest villain in Hollywood these days is sugar. Just like pink’s the new black, sugar is the new fat. Not only responsible for expanding waistlines, sugar is being blamed for a host of health nasties. It’s even been labelled ‘as toxic’ by nutritionists to the stars, and shoved into the same category as asbestos, industrial waste, carcinogenics and arsenic! Author of Eat, Nourish, Glow, Amelia Freer, says more and more celebs are canning sugar and feeling like a million bucks. “Sugar has many disguises but whatever form it’s in, it’s toxic and it’s not doing your health, let alone your beach body goals any good. What’s more it’s also a highly addictive substance — which is why we crave it and it can be so hard to cut out. We get a dopamine response when we first eat it and this pleasure state becomes addictive, but we need to consume more and

more each time to get the same effect,” says Freer. Dermatologist Dr Fredric Brandt, who counts Madonna, Rupert Everett, Cher and Ellen Barkin among his clients, explains why sugar is enemy Number One — not only for your waistline, but also for your skin. “By simply reducing your sugar intake, you can turn back the clock by ten years and improve the texture, tone and radiance of your skin,” he says. “In a nutshell, sugar hastens the degradation of elastin and collagen, both key skin proteins. In other words, it actively ages you. I saw a remarkable change in my own skin when I eliminated sugar from my diet. Not only did I drop kilos, but, within ten days I saw an increased glow, radiance and elasticity in my face. And within a year, my body had changed completely as well. I’m really lean and have the body of a teenager, although I’m in my 40s. My clients don’t believe it’s just yoga and a sugar-free diet; they think I must have had everything lifted. But believe me, it’s cheaper than a face-lift — with much longer lasting results.”

Sugar-Free Celebs Who Are Sweeter For It

Drew Barrymore

As a kid Drew Barrymore had an incredibly sweet tooth but has cut sugar from her diet after she began suffering from fluctuating weight gain. “I used to love a slice of cake, but managed to train myself to enjoy sugar-free lime jelly instead,” she says.

18

CELEB STYLES | September / October 2015 |

Gwyneth Paltrow

Medical issues a couple of years ago encouraged Gwyneth Paltrow to go gluten dairy and sugar free for most of her diet. “We had the food sensitivities test and the doctor told us to avoid these foods and sugar as much as possible (a true nightmare with a six and eight-year-old). My son has eczema, so I have to take these dietary rules seriously,” says the mom of two.

5

DIETS

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts still eats her favourite meals but only in ‘tiny’ portions and she cooks them without sugar. “I’ll have tiny portions of my favourite ice-cream or blueberry pancakes (made without sugar), which means I still get the taste without the calories.”

That Drastically Limit Sugar

Dukan Diet: Celebrity fans include Jennifer Lopez and Kate Middleton The Dukan diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet (chicken, turkey, eggs, fish and fat-free dairy). There’s no limit to how much you can eat during the plan’s four phases, provided you stick to the rules of the plan. Paleo Diet: Celebrity fans include Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel, Miley Cyrus, Uma Thurman and Jack Osbourne The Paleo diet, also known as the caveman diet, was Google’s most searched-for weight loss method in 2013. The diet consists of foods that can be hunted and fished — such as meat and seafood — and foods that can be gathered — such as eggs, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. New Atkins Diet: Celebrity fans include Jennifer Aniston, Gerri Halliwell, and Robbie Williams The Atkins diet promises to turn your body into a fat-burning machine. The theory is that by starving yourself of carbohydrates, your body will start burning fat for energy. New Atkins is similar to the old Atkins, except it allows a wider variety of foods to make it more nutritionally balanced. Alkaline Diet: Celebrity fans include Gywneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Victoria Beckham The alkaline diet, which is based on the idea that modern diets cause our body to produce too much acid. The theory is that excess acid in the body is turned into fat, leading to weight gain. High acidity levels have also been blamed on conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, tiredness, and kidney and liver disorders. The diet recommends cutting back on acid-producing foods such as meat, wheat and other grains, refined sugar, dairy products, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods in favour of “alkaline foods”, which reduce the body’s acidity levels The Five Factor Diet: Celebrity fans include Eva Mendez, Beyoncé Knowles and Sarah Jessica Parker The five factor diet consists of consuming five meals daily, and each meal consists of five ingredients. The target ingredients include protein, unsaturated fats, fibre, carbs and a drink containing no sugar. Furthermore, the dieter is required to work out for around a half an hour five days a week.

Heidi Klum

Model Heidi Klum swears by a strict sugar free diet. “My personal trainer advised I avoid a few different things. First and foremost is sugar in any way shape or form: sugar, honey, maple syrup, even artificial sweeteners. No sugar. Start cutting those things out, and the pounds will start falling off. I carry around celery sticks to keep me away from my fave biscuits,” she says.

Caitlin Moran

Jamie Oliver

Globally renowned chef Jamie Oliver is dead against sugar. “It’s important to put the spotlight firmly on a massive global problem and highlight the hugely negative impact sugar is having on our health. Let’s not forget that diet-related disease is one of the world’s biggest killers and it’s entirely preventable. If Obama wanted to make radical changes to America’s health long-term, all he has to do is treble the price of sugar and salt,” he says.

When Caitlin Moran learned that flour pound for pound has as many calories as sugar, and that when eating pasta you’re basically eating cake, she was size 23, and her neck was restricting her breathing. “That’s when I decided to cut out not only sugar, but starch as well,” she says. “I got on a microbiotic diet (a dietary regimen which involves eating grains as a staple food, supplemented with other foods such as local vegetables, and avoiding the use of highly processed or refined foods and most animal products) and got myself an exercise bike.”

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne admits she used to eat ‘bad stuff’ but since cutting out sugar she’s a changed woman. “I was eating lots of sugar and carbs, junk food all the time. It makes you very irritated,” says Avril. “Since cutting sugar out of my diet I feel so much better.” | September / October 2015 | CELEB STYLES

The latest instalment in Katy’s Killer Queen fragrance line is called Spring Reign. The perfume will have you smelling like a walking garden. That is the objective of a springtime perfume after all, right? The scent comes bottled in its signature gem case topped with a golden crest and contains notes of flowers that sound so exotic, you’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of them before: pink freesia, violet petals, cassis buds, natural davana, gardenia, may flower rose, cedarwood oil and cashmeran. Katy Perry Killer Queen Spring Reign (Limited Edition):

R345 Coty

Fleur Fatale is a new fragrance by Kim Kardashian. The fragrance can be described as captivating, feminine and sensual composition of floral, woody and musk notes. This seductive and rich composition evokes the exotic Orient. The scent starts with accords of black currant, violet and bergamot. The heart reveals seductive floral layers of tea rose, peony and iris. The base ends with amber, creamy sandalwood and white musk. The bottle is shaped like Kim’s favorite flower — a white rose. Known for his feminine, romantic fashion, Oscar De La Renta’s designs take us back to a different, more glamorous era. His first fragrance became a worldwide best seller and now there’s a new, fresh re-interpretation. A younger, fresher and easy going citrus, floral and musk scent. Flor Eau de Parfum:

Sparkling and vivacious, Jimmy Choo’s Blossom can be described as the burst of excitement before the party starts. It’s a bold new bouquet that has the beat of every city girl at its heart; joyful and alluring. “Every time I slip on my Jimmy Choo heels or pick up my Jimmy Choo handbag, I feel like a different person,” explains Louise Turner, the perfumer. “When I was asked to work on Jimmy Choo Blossom, I immediately imagined a joyful fragrance that lifts your spirits, gives you great confidence and makes you feel beautiful and alluring.” Blossom Eau de Parfum:

Jimmy Choo

The fragrance is dedicated to glamorous and seductive women who are confident, playful, decadent and sensual. This new feminine fragrance reflects its famous masculine counterpart Azzaro Pour Homme and graces the skin with its signature “floral woody amber” scent. It is composed of a top note of cardamom, lemony-spicy notes blended with a rosy, tangy and sparkling accord, a heart note of rose and lily, and a base note of olibanum incense and cashmere wood.

Easy Breezy

Beyoncé

Carefree and cute hair is what we are all after and that’s the reason why beachy waves are always a must have when the weather turns warmer. This year it’s either a deep side part or middle part with a bit of volume. You can lift your hair by spraying a lifting spray on damp roots to tips and then using a curling iron to create your loose waves. Finish the style off by applying a dime sized amount of curling cream to keep flyaways at bay. You can easily tie your wavy hair up in a breezy pony.

Bombshell Braids

Victoria

Beyoncé

Braids get revisited and revamped nearly every season, it’s pretty much guaranteed. And this spring is no different. Braids are still a big trend in any way and form: from Victoria Justice, Charlize Theron and Bella Thorne’s headband braids to Emma Robert’s fancy fishtail. Why not go all-out with a full head of braids? Celebs like Imani Hakim and Jada Pinkett-Smith style this to perfection by edging it up with a half top knot and shaved sides.

Dusty Pastels SURPRISE! Seasonally appropriate pastel hues are back, but they now have a muted ‘70s vibe. Keep the look modern by blending your choice of pastel over the entire lid and brow bone, like Ashley Benson and Solange Knowles. We recommend starting with an eyelid primer, as shadows can darken when exposed to the natural oils on your eyelids. Then layer on mascara to anchor the dreamy look and give it a bit of an edge. If this isn’t your style, then go pastel on lips in pretty pink or powder blue on nails, like Kylie Jenner.

YOUR QUESTIONS

ANSWERED...

Our experts Steven From Absolut Hair answers YOUR questions.

Chris from Durban asks… I’m 19 years old and very creative with my hair. I’m keen to try the latest trend, ‘Merman’ hair colour. My hair is black and I’m thinking to go green and blue. Do these colours damage your hair? Please advise… Steven says...The merman look is very exciting but can be damaging to your hair. These colours need to be applied to a light base to be effective. The darker the natural colour the more lifting would be required and this bleaching process can be very drying and damaging to the hair. It’s always advisable to do a small section of the hair to test the outcome first. This would need to be done professionally so that your stylist can advise you on an in-salon intensive treatment to protect your hair from damage. You could either use the System Professional Duo-infusion treatment or the System Professional new Liquid Hair Treatment. The various colours could be achieved using Wella’s new Instamatic colour range.

Hilda from Craighall asks… I have very fine hair and as I’m getting older it is getting worse. I’m very embarrassed about this — is there anything I can take to thicken my hair? Steven says...There are a few products on the market — Nioxin is one of the most effective ranges — it will help to boost the density of your hair and also stimulate new growth where hair has fallen out. There is more information on Nioxin and how it works on our website: www.absoluthair.co.za/nioxin.html It is also advisable to keep your haircut shorter rather than longer as this will also help to make it look thicker. Another common contributor to hairloss is often medication — so if you are on medication speak to your doctor or dermatologist.

Jade from Sandton asks… What are the trends for spring going into summer 2015? Steven says... The trend for summer 2015 has a variety of exciting looks. They are the wet effect — the hair is combed back off the face with the help of gel or a styling spray, messy braids, middle partings, low side parting, natural texture, chignons and corn rows.

Terry from Cape Town asks… I moved to Cape Town in January and I really am battling to control my frizzy hair. Can you advise what is the best product to use for unmanageable hair? Steven says… There are several professional products on the market that work wonders with frizzy hair. The first thing to look at would be the shampoo and conditioner as this would moisturise and soften your hair. Together with your care products, I would recommend using a treatment styling product in conjunction with a normal styling aid. The treatment styling product would help defrizz and moisturise the hair throughout the day whilst the styling aid will control your style. I recommend: Wella System Proffesional — Smoothen Shampoo and Conditioner, Sim —– Argan Shampoo and Conditioner, Sebastian — Potion 9 (this is an excellent treatment styling product) Sebastian — Texturizer (this is an excellent styling aid to control frizz) Absolut Hair

TREND FROM

GENDER NEUTRAL

SWEET ROMANCE

This trend is all about the haute hippy glam maxi dresses and caftans with loads of ethnic accessories to show off long, waved, crimped and braided hair.

SUGAR POP

Wild and fun, sugar pink, mint green and a violet grey are the new hot and trendy hair colours taking over the runways from Chanel to Dior. Korean model, Soo Joo Park, is the poster girl for this look.

A big thank you to David Gillson, director and master stylist at Carlton Hair Constantia, Hyde Park and Melrose Arch and Boyd Meilhon, master stylist at Carlton Hair Hyde Park for supplying the pictures. www.carltonhair.com

This trend is all about androgyny and the breakdown of the gender barriers. Ever since Alessandro Michele took over as the head designer at Gucci he sealed this as the major new trend; boys wearing flares and soft chiffon tops with longer hair and finally the death of the beard. The boys are borrowing their girlfriend’s styling products, while girls opt for more masculine short crops.Transgender models and celebrities are the new norm, a la Caitlyn Jenner on the Vanity Fair cover.

REINVENT

YOUR

LOOK

T

Boring is old school — get creative and gorgeous all day, every day.

here’s no reason to have the same hairstyle every day — in fact, you should be changing your look throughout the day. And while only some of us work 09h00 to 17h00 and others have only early morning college to worry about, most of us spend many evenings

having dinner or drinks out with friends. So get creative and go from conservative to casual, or just plain sexy, in just a few short minutes. All you need is a little creativity and effort — and of course some tips from us. Start looking fresh and fabulous for every occasion.

A Ponytail For Any Event

Whether long or short, curly or straight, there’s one hairstyle that works for busy women everywhere — the ponytail. And it’s not just for when you’re doing the dishes or heading to the gym. It’s easy to achieve, brings out your features and can be used for a casual day out at the shops, or a more Va Va Voom look for a night out. And there’s no reason for it to be boring — make your ponytail chic and eye-catching.

By Angela Bekiaris

CELEB STYLES | September / October 2015 |

Side Sweep For Date Night Nicole Richie’s low ponytail and face-framing layers shows how simply elegant this hairstyle can look. While not an updo — which makes it oh-so-formal — it will turn your look into a dazzling one. Not only will you look and feel feminine, but stand out from the rest too.

Soft & Romantic For Special Occasions

Selena Gomez

TIP

Accessorise to look trendy with scarves bows, pins, hair bands and more.

Many stars have shown off their soft and romantic side on the red carpet — so if you have a work event or just a function which needs to be attended after work or on the weekend, this is one style you should consider. The wispy, face framing curls give a relaxed feel yet create a elegant look — Selena Gomez has shown us how it’s done on many occasions. Experts also say this style allows eyes to travel to the face first.

Sienna Miller

Milkmaid Braid All Day Round

Sienna Miller pulls this one off beautifully. With spring here and summer on its way, the days will be getting very hot, so try out the milkmaid braid for day or night. Back comb your crown until it gives you some height. Secure it with bob pins. Take the remaining hair and divide it into two sections. Make two lose normal braids. Take each braid upwards from behind the ear and secure with bob pins. Comb your flicks and spray your hair.

The Gorgeous Fishtail Braid

We love this twist in the normal braid — and it looks elegant and oh-so pretty on everyone. Simply part your hair in two and take small strands from the outside going in until you’re done. Opt for a clean and tucked in or messy and playful — either way you’ll leave home looking stylish and beautiful, without even taking too much of your time.

Tighten Your Knots

Tautly wound buns, knots, and twists are back with a (tidy) vengeance, say experts. To get the smooth locks you need, stylists say you should work in small sections and use a shine product, as well as hairspray, before and after knotting. This look can be worn at work, for coffee with friends or on a night out at the clubs.

Slick Back Your Bangs

Be modern and creative and and do something new with your bangs. Stylists suggest you focus your attention on top section of hair at the top of your head. Eliminate frizz by blow-drying wafer-thin layers back off the face, spritzing on plenty of hairspray to keep hair in place. And if you want a stronger hold, secure your do with bobby pins along the crown.

Get All Girlie

Alice bands are not just for kids — this ‘60s-influenced look is still trendy today and can make you look sweet and elegant. Pull your hair back with an Alice band or clip for your next meeting, or that shopping spree you have planned with the girls over the weekend. You can also tease at the crown before smoothing short hair into place.

Curl It For Afternoon Drinks

No time to get your hair done for after-work drinks? Don’t panic — carry your curling iron with you and just add some soft curls at the ends before getting into the car. You’ll go from plain to gorgeous in seconds.

58

CELEB STYLES | September / October 2015 |

Messy & Sexy For Your Workout

A messy bun or ponytail is fab for the gym or your weekly Pilates class, but what’s great is the messy look can be worn in many other places too. Go messy on the beach, on a Saturday afternoon with the girls, or while watching a movie with friends or that special someone. Hey, who knows…. maybe you could rock the messy look at a formal function too!

Wrap It Up

Scarves are not just to be worn in the cold. Get stylish this spring by wrapping up your tresses in a silky scarf. While this might not show off your locks, it works well for days when there was no time to wash, blow dry and style — and in the same breath gives you a fashionable look, which could be pulled off on the catwalk, too. MAKING

YOU BALD? We discuss the effects of menopause on your tresses.

By Angela Bekiaris

ot flashes and mood swings are expected during the big change, but who knew you were going to lose your hair in the process too. And while you have come to accept menopause as a natural stage of womanhood, coming to grips with losing your hair is difficult. According to reports, about 40 percent of women experience hair thinning during or after menopause, which is almost at the same rate as men. However unlike male pattern hair loss, hereditary hair loss in women is usually a lot subtler and it can be easy to miss the early warning signs. For many women, the first signs and symptoms may come in the form of a smaller ponytail, a wider part line or excessive shedding during brushing and showering, say experts, before, during or after menopause. Hair loss during menopause is usually a direct result of fluctuating hormone levels. According to 34-Menopause-Symtoms. com, two main hormones are involved in hair growth: estrogen and testosterone. In estrogenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss for menopausal women, hair loss is directly attributed to a fall in estrogen levels. Estrogen helps hair grow faster and stay on the head longer, leading to thicker, healthier hair. Androgens, or male hormones, increase as estrogen levels decrease,

Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson was pictured with noticeably thinning hair earlier this year. Not long after her hair looked just fabulous, leading some to speculate she had had ‘a little help’ from a hairpiece. The 55-year-old could be one of the many women affected by the menopausal symptom. US television presenter Cheryl Baker has also spoken of suffering hair loss during the menopause.

which causes androgenic alopecia, another form of hair loss. An androgen known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), appears to bind to hair follicles and force them to go into their 'resting' phases, or telogen, sooner than normal, causing the new hairs to grow ever thinner with each cycle of hair growth. Testosterone also shrinks hair follicles, causing hair loss on the head but a greater production of hair on the face. With September being Menopause Awareness Month, we thought we would help you understand why you’re going slightly bald — and how to treat it. • Firstly your hormones play a major role — while your hair becomes full and beautiful during pregnancy, the declining levels during menopause may have the opposite impact. • Contributing factors including genetic predisposition, unusual levels of stress, other hormonal imbalances — like thyroid, for example — nutritional or iron deficiencies, crash diets, as well as illness, medications and your surgical history, need to be looked at. • Start treatment ASAP — if you’ve noticed your hair is thinning out, don’t wait to lose more! Hair restoration physicians may recommend both pharmaceutical and lifestyle changes to women experiencing menopauserelated hair-loss problems. Chat to them — or to your doctor — about what products you can use or medication you can take. Make sure you get help from someone who specialises exclusively in the medical diagnosis, treatment and tracking of hair loss and its treatment. • Beware of psychological effects — while it’s a cosmetic problem, it affects the whole

body, even the mind. Studies have shown that hair loss can have wide-ranging psychological effects on women, including loss of confidence and self-esteem and in some cases, depression, anxiety, social withdrawal and more. • Make lifestyle adjustments — changes in your diet and hair care might help, as well as increasing one's intake of protein, vitamin B, vitamin C, and iron all help. A balanced diet low in saturated fat is your best defence against health conditions, including hair loss. Incorporate enough whole grains, mono-saturated oils, and fruits and vegetables in each meal. Drinking green tea and getting enough Vitamin B6 and folic acid may restore hair growth. Essential fatty acids play a key role in maintaining your hair health and can be found in foods including salmon, tuna, herring, flaxseed oil, walnuts and almonds. Exercise and stress reduction techniques such as yoga or meditation improve overall health, and taking care to not pull or twist hair can minimise damage, too. Exercising is a sure way to keep mood swings in check, maintain your weight, and even help you sleep — all important factors contributing to hormonal balance, which promotes healthy hair growth. • For extreme cases, there are medications or hair transplant surgeries available, but always take care with these — there could be side-effects and major risks involved. • Feeling anxious is very possible too, so try allow yourself to just breathe. There are many steps you can take to improve the quality of your hair from the inside out — and it’s important to keep stress levels in check to preserve hormonal balance. | September / October 2015 | CELEB STYLES

Thornton, Kevin Costner, Tom Hanks, Wayne Rooney, Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage, Shane Warne and even former Proteas batsman Jacques Kallis, have also gone from practically bald to famously fabulous. Dr Larry Gershowitz is South Africa’s most prominent expert in hair transplants, having specialised in the medical field of hair transplantation for almost 20 years, 12 of which have been spent at a leading hair clinic in South Africa. His perfectionism, artistic expertise and innovative techniques place him on

the forefront of medical hair restoration and transplantation. Under his leadership, Medhair has become a trusted name in the field, and earned its position amongst the most renowned surgical hair restoration clinics in the world.

What Causes Hair Loss?

"Often, those who seek solutions don’t know what causes hair loss. If you suffer from this affliction, then you’ll know how frustrating it can be," says Dr Larry. "Balding, in any form, affects about 60 to 70 percent of men,

UTIFUL! while only four to eight percent of women are prone. Even today, medical professionals have varying opinions regarding hair loss causes. Some maintain that balding or thinning is primarily hereditary and can be inherited from either the mother or the father’s side. However, a person may be predisposed towards hair loss even if both of his or her parents had full, luscious locks. This is due to spontaneous mutation, a process whereby the genetic information alters at conception. Some of the common causes of hair

loss include trauma, prolonged exposure to radiation therapy, burns and surgery. Interestingly, a variety of prescription drugs have also been found to cause excessive shedding. Some of the culprits are ulcer drugs, anti-depressants, betablockers, blood thinners and even Parkinson medications."

Diet And It's Role

Dr Larry adds that diet can also sometimes be a factor. "If you don’t eat well, this could also be the cause of balding or thinning hair. A diet

During procedure low in vitamins A, C, E and B12 often results in brittle, unhealthy tresses that can easily fall out. By upping your intake of whole foods, raw fruits and vegetables you can make a positive difference to the condition of your hair. Unfortunately, once your hair loss has progressed beyond a certain point, dietary changes can’t help. The good news is that restoration surgery can go a long way to bringing back your former glory" Other Factors While it’s possible for surgical procedures to remedy balding, it’s important to note that multiple drugs, illnesses and environmental factors can be reasons why hair falls out. In these cases, replacement treatment is not the answer. If you suffer from a scalp disease, you should consult a dermatologist. When it comes to hair surgery options, transplantation is a popular solution. "Nowadays, there are plenty of remedies for balding and thinning tresses. These new breakthroughs

Directly after treatment only eight months to one year later. Today’s hair replacement treatment owes its success to the fact that the transplanted hair follicles (roots moved from their original location to another area) behave in the same way as they did in their original site. Approximately three to four months after the hair restoration surgery, this hair will slowly start to grow back and it will then continue to grow for the remainder of your life. Tallying Up The Cost

The cost of hair transplantation varies from patient to patient and depends on the extent of your hair loss, and the colour, texture and amount of your donor hair. While prices differ between transplant clinics, expect to pay anything from R22 000 to R44 000 plus for sessions. Before you fall off your chair, keep in mind that hair loss transplantation usually costs 50 to 60 percent less over a lifetime than other solutions (such as hair extensions and hairpieces), and it is your own natural growing hair.

It is highly recommended that patients who are undergoing hair replacement treatment refrain from heavy exercise for ten to fourteen days after the surgery. Patients may wear loose-fitting hats directly after their hair restoration surgery, but hard hats or tight-fitting helmets are not recommended for two weeks. The transplanted hair is delicate and needs to be kept safe, as there is always the danger of the new follicles being ripped out due to excessive strain. rregular Choice was created by Dan Sullivan in 1999 as a reason to stand out from the crowd. Dan was born in London, England. He saw that the footwear market was becoming very neutral and black, yet there was a global demand for something different and individual, something to wear with pride. At 18 Dan had opened his first shoe shop. Dan has stuck very determinedly to his philosophy throughout the past 13 years, which is to keep Irregular Choice as something that is not influenced or changeable but original and set apart from the crowd. His fearlessness translates into the design of the shoes and an Irregular Choice shoe is not like any other you’ll find. Dan doesn’t listen to what’s happening in the fashion industry or what another brand may be doing. This is what makes Irregular Choice designs

completely unique and truthful. Dan’s library of fabrics, leathers, prints, trims, toys, glass, furs and colours are simply never ending. Each year Dan creates over 600 different styles, and is constantly jotting down styles, photos and sketches — it’s an ever expanding creative process. Irregular Choice has evolved with great strides over the past decade. The brand is now sold through hundreds of stockists around the world, and has five of its own stores across the globe; Two in London England, One in Brighton, England (the hometown of Dan and his family), One in Leicester, England and their first flagship store in Asia, Hong Kong. They also have a number of concessions and ‘shop in shop’ areas inside stockists worldwide. Dan has a very clear vision, which is never swayed and is brought to life within the Irregular Choice stores.

t the age of 40, Angelina Jolie is still undoubtedly one of the most elegant and stylish leading ladies of this era. Whether spending time with her kids at the park in jeans and a T-shirt, watching the game with hubby Brad wearing a baseball cap and without any make-up, or dazzling on the red carpet in a designer gown with her locks in an elegant up do, Angelina is known for her iconic fashion sense and unique eye for beauty. Skin: Always fresh faced, Angelina’s porcelain complexion is the envy of women across the globe. Angelina swears by dermatologist David Colvert in New York City, whose been taking care of all her skin needs since the pair were first introduced in 2010. There’s little to no downtime of the treatment, which is perfect for the actress’s hectic schedule. As for scents, Angie prefers clean, masculine fragrances and is known to wear Carolina Herrerra’s Herrerra for Men since she was sixteen. She also wears Bvlgari Black and Creed Love in White. Golden Nugget: Angelina believes less is more when it comes to daily skin care and steers away from harsh soaps and cleaning products. She doesn’t advocate going under the knife and is famous for shunning plastic surgeons and opting for natural beauty instead. Make-Up: Although she doesn’t like heavy make-up and prefers going al natural,

Angelina is still the master of the black winged cat eye and red pouty lips. According to Tim Schmidt, founder of SkinPro and one of Angie’s make-up artists, the starlet always puts on heavy sunscreen and takes extra special care in moisturising her skin with a tinted moisturiser. Other than that, a simple, foundation of light-to-medium coverage and a sweep of translucent powder and Angie is good to go. “She prefers to look clean and natural, rather than like a pancake,” says Tim. “And to prove that even these people can make huge mistakes in their appearance, for some inexplicable reason, when Jolie appeared to support her husband at the premiere of The Normal Heart, she had patches of powder on her face. Was that an oversight, or simply something that occurred due to haste? No matter what the reason was, it is a clear indication

They tell me I’m skinny, as if that’s supposed to make me happy.” — fashion evolution — Angelina’s style has gone from vampish goth to elegant leading lady. Some of her favourite designers include French fashion house BCBG Max Azria, who designed a light moss floor-length gown for a then heavily pregnant with twins Angie for the premiere of Kung Fu Panda in Cannes; Ellie Saab, who dressed Angie for the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival in an orange gown, with thigh-high slit, loose draped shape and three quarter length sleeves; and of course, her favourite of the lot, Atelier Versace, who designed Angie’s gown for the 2012 golden globes. The cream asymmetric dress with a slash of red across the neck and thigh slit is still talked about today in fashion circles.
