eil, owner of The Cutting Room, reflects on the lessons that have carried him through the years… When did you start? My hairdressing career started when I was three years old! My mom owned a salon that operated on a walk-in basis so I was often looked after by waiting clients and started doing their hair for them! My wife Sherene and I established The Cutting Room in 2005. How many salons do you own? At the moment we own three salons, and maybe a few more in the pipeline! We are also going to be opening a kiddies salon soon! Exciting stuff! What made you go on your own? I’ve never been good with authority and being told what to do so I would say that I got bored! Besides, having a boss means that you can never just pop out quickly, or decide to revamp your salon every year! I like to change things up regularly, it keeps things interesting! If you could do one thing differently, what would it be? I would have started using professional products by a well known branded house like Redken much sooner. Toughest decision I’ve ever had to make… We had a salon in Muizenberg a while ago and were constantly having to deal with various building issues. We had to make a very tough decision to close it down after a while and no one likes that feeling, especially because the salon itself was successful. The key to happiness is… Loving what you do. If you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. I knew my salon made it when… We were able to open accounts with various brands that had previously turned us away because we were ‘too new’. It was also when we were approached to be hairstylists for the likes of Cape Town Fashion Week and Top Billing that really made me see just how far we have come in the industry and we will only continue to grow from strength to strength. The advice I’m glad I never took? When we were starting out, a lot of people told us not to trust anyone, especially staff. We are glad we never listened to that advice because trusting and having faith in people has given us the opportunity to open more salons. What advice do you give young stylists? You never stop learning. Knowledge is power. Don’t ever think that you know it all. There is always room for improvement. Take advice and assistance from senior stylists gracefully. Always be yourself, be passionate and take pride in all that you do. Most of all, HAVE FUN!

ollywood stars don’t only entertain us — they inspire us to look better, feel amazing and stand out in a crowd. And when it comes to reality star Caitlyn Jenner, there’s no questioning the fact that she’s got everyone’s attention since her transformation earlier this year — and most importantly she has the most beautiful tresses we all desperately want! The I Am Cait star has people talking, heads spinning and paparazzi snapping these days as she struts her stuff in Hollywood. But while we know she owns every designer outfit on the planet — which she flaunts along with those long, gorgeous legs — and is

doing a great job educating people about the transgender community, it’s her hair that’s got us a little jealous these days. So we went digging to find out all the tricks and secrets used by her hair stylist Courtney Nanson. When asked how she created Caitlyn’s look, Courtney said, "We would both tear out magazine pages and send texts of colours and styles we liked. It was also a dream scenario because I got to spend a lot of time with Cait prior to her debut. It was very important for me to really get to know her on the inside and out. I needed to know what type of style she was going to feel the most beautiful wearing. And it took a few months before I
envisioned her being a rich, shiny, gorgeous brunette. I think it is the best colour for her and gives us a lot of room to work with and add to.” According to Courtney, "Cait has always loved long hair. Her whole life people were constantly telling her to cut her hair. Long hair is more than just a look; it's a feeling. I have put Cait's hair up, pulled it back on the sides, or into a high ponytail depending on what the situation calls for. But mainly her daily hairstyle is a fresh look, softly curving around her face with fullness. It will work for anything she might be doing that day and will last through the night.” When it comes to styling the star’s hair, Courtney says she loves
Did You Know?
Though Caitlyn has made it clear she’s enjoying the learning process behind getting glam, she admitted the challenges of it during her speech at the EPSY Awards earlier this year. “I’ve never felt more pressured than I ever have in my life, than the last couple of months,” she declared. “Picking out this outfit — OK, girls, I get it! You got to get the shoes, the hair, the make-up, the whole process. It was exhausting.”
doing big blowouts. "I recommend working with three to four different sizes of round brushes. I start at the hairline working in one-inch sections around the entire head — I use the smallest brush first and graduate up a size with each section. I concentrate on blowing the roots upward. I then finish with the biggest brush on the top of her head for maximum volume. I also set every section with Velcro rollers for a minimum of 30 minutes, taking out each roller and lightly back-combing each section to build shape. I always finalise the look by adding volume to the ends with a smoothing brush.” But how does Caitlyn keep her hair looking so fabulous when
Courtney’s not around? "I got Cait her own styling tools specifically to help her style her hair herself,” says the stylist. "She will use a set of large hot rollers that heat up in eight seconds, which makes it quick and easy. One of my favourite tools I got her is an automatic curling iron, which she uses to add loose waves for a daytime look. I must say, she does a pretty good job at styling her own hair." Courtney also adds that "Cait is always up for trying out different looks. We still play with different lengths, and I think we always will.” As for her beauty secrets, Caitlyn has explained that she always did her own make-up until she started filming for I Am Cait. According
to the reality star, she primarily uses MAC Cosmetics these days because she loves the coverage of the brand's formulas. She also loves girlie nail polish — she’s been spotted out in red and hot pink. And when asked during a recent interview how her skincare has changed since her transition, Caitlyn explained how taking care of her skin has been a work in progress ever since the ‘80s, when she first had her beard removed. "[Removing my beard] actually took a lot of volume out right out of [my chin]," she said, adding "So it was kind of, a little bit pothole-y, you know? That has gotten better throughout the years. Which is a good thing." | November / December 2015 | CELEB STYLES

Take the bottom half of your hair and fold about 5cm sections up to your scalp. Use a pin to secure the ends of your hair tightly to your head.
It may take a little work, but a braided hairstyle is so worth it. Braid a small section of hair on each side of your head, securing at the centre in the back.

3. Major Bun Alert A doughnut ring will be your BFF with this huge bun. Gather your hair into a high ponytail. Don’t use a brush — use your fingers instead. Place a hair doughnut around the base of your ponytail and fan out your hair over the doughnut. Then twist your hair around and tuck the ends under the doughnut. This works so well with curly hair, like Rihanna’s.
For a bedhead messy bun, loosely pull hair into a ponytail and when securing with a hair tie, don’t pull the loop of hair entirely through on the last twist. Then, pull out a few wispy, face-framing pieces at the front.

This style looks more complicated than it really is. Simply twist one side of the front section of your hair to the back and secure with a pin. If there ever was a ‘classic girl-next-door’ Heidi Klum is it. A natural beauty, the gorgeous 42-year-old supermodel, TV personality and mom of four is always a show-stopper.
T
here’s a reason why Heidi Klum brings home the big bucks. The second highest earning model (after Gisele Bündchen), Klum has built up a business empire since ending her 13-year run as a winged Victoria’s Secret Angel. She’s designed clothing lines, jewellery and shoes, made her own reality TV series, written an autobiography,
released her debut single ‘Wonderland’, joined America’s Got Talent as the show’s fourth judge and, all the while, looked absolutely fabulous climbing the ladder of success. Whether she’s rocking on the red carpet or walking the dogs with the kids around the park, Klum always looks effortlessly elegant (despite admitting she hardly ever brushes her hair!).
On Diet And Working Out
With such an intense schedule — juggling family and work — it’s hard to believe Klum still finds the time to hit the gym! Her secrete motivation? Pretend it’s bikini season all year round! “I regularly make healthy decisions when it comes to both my diet and to my workout schedules,” she says. “My favourite workout is a long run along the Westside Highway, which stretches along the Hudson River in New York City. It’s a beautiful path, and you always feel surrounded by such an amazing community. You see the same people running every morning, and they inspire me to

keep going.“ With Klum’s busy schedule she admits it’s impossible to have a ‘set’ fitness routine. “Instead I like to try and incorporate exercise into my daily life whenever I can. which requires some creativity. Sometimes I jump on the trampoline with my kids, dance around the living room, or take a hike with my dogs in the canyon by my house. Sometimes I run for 30 minutes on my treadmill, but I prefer to be outdoors. When I’m travelling, it could be doing a few sit-ups in my hotel room before I head to work. My best advice is to work out with a buddy. They keep
you motivated and get you out of bed. I think it’s also important to set goals. For example, when I started to run, I would run a mile and then walk a mile and kept building up as time went on. If you are running on the street, go one mailbox or one house further each day. It also helps to build up your endurance!” When it comes to diet, Klum sticks to fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. “It’s important to keep a balanced diet, but I’m not a fan of deprivation. If I want a cheeseburger, I am not only going to eat that cheeseburger, but I’m going to enjoy that cheeseburger,”

ON BEAUTY
H ON AIR Who would have known that Klum was a fresh-faced brunette before she became a huge name on the fashion scene. Yes, you read right — a brunette! Heidi started dying her hair when she went to America to pursue a career in modelling and hasn’t stopped colouring it since. “I had a lot of insecurities when I first started out in the industry,” she says. “I wasn’t thin enough, tall enough, edgy enough. I learnt very quickly that if I wanted to be a supermodel I had to change my lifestyle. I couldn’t eat muffins and spaghetti bolognaise every day. I had to have great hair, great nails. I had to stop picking my pimples. I had to have enough sleep and be on time.” Klum was always ‘the big commercial girl’, she says. “I did hair campaigns. There were big-name models like Claudia and Naomi and I understood if I wanted to do cooler, more creative things I had to find my own path.” Over the years Klum has sported several different hairstyles, but she’s never
16
CELEB STYLES | November / December 2015
Klum’s au naturel look when it comes to beauty translates from head to toe. You’ll often see her wearing just a sweep of bronzer and swig of mascara. “I tend to not wear makeup on my off days. I am not complicated, I don’t have tons of creams or anything like that. I stay simple,” she says. “I just get dressed in the morning and sometimes I’ll put on a light foundation. I don’t really ‘dress-up’ when I go anywhere. Maybe a little bit of eyebrow filler and mascara. But when the sun is on my skin, I want it to go directly on my skin, and not through all these layers of junk.” Klum swears by BB creams.”A big problems for a lot of women is finding the right foundation. I think BB creams really help because they’re much lighter with SPF, and they have coverage. My favourite is from a European company called Astor. It enhances your beauty, but it’s not necessarily completely covering you up. You don’t have to go crazy and wear too much make-up. Just pick a brown or shimmery eyeshadow, always a little bit of mascara, and I think an eyelash curler is key. Have a nice glossy lip, and maybe a little rosy cheek. If you have a special date night or event, then try a little bit more with a cat eye or something, but not too much.” Heidi’s favourite beauty spurge? Gel manicures. “I like getting my nails done, but I always have someone come to my house. I don’t like to go to those places where you put your hands and feet in a sink. I’m funny about that because I think you can catch so many things. I swear by gel manicures. People get really worried about gels because they think they’ll make their nails brittle but I have found the opposite, I think wearing Shellac has actually made my nails better! I prefer light neutrals, like pinks and pearls instead of dark, bold colours.”
traded in her sunkissed locks and keeps her colour fresh by dying her roots every three weeks. In 2001, Klum sported shaggy bangs, two years later she took the plunge and chopped her locks into a short blunt cut that soon grew to a one-length bob (still one of Heidi’s trendiest hairstyles). By 2013, she had grown her hair past the shoulders and has kept it long since, usually wearing it down (with the odd sighting of it in a bun or ponytail). “I always like to play with my hair, with my styles, and haircut,” she says. “I go from bangs to growing it out again. I usually cut it and then I want to grow it out immediately! I think hair is our accessory. It’s like a great pair of shoes, like a great purse, or a bracelet. So I think you should take care of your hair and play with it and not always have it the same. You don’t always want to wear the same shoes or the same handbag either, so I think it’s fun to change it up.” Klum says her biggest beauty
mishap involves her hair. “I have had my hair over-bleaching on more than one occasions — when the person who was bleaching my hair didn’t pay attention or take enough time. She used too much peroxide and left it on too long,” she says. “My hair broke off, so I had a little pineapple on top of my hair (two inches in some places) for the longest time that was really difficult to get rid of. That was hard because you have to constantly pat it and spray it down.” Just like every woman across the globe, Klum does have the odd bad hair day. “If it’s really bad, I usually throw my hair into a bun or I wear a hat. But sometimes, I just don’t care because the days of having your hair perfect are over. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I don’t even brush my hair. My trick is to wash my hair at night and fall asleep with my hair wet. Then I roll around in the pillow and I wake up and my hair looks perfectly messy,” she says.

When it comes to style, this German-born beauty knows what she wants — and the world tends to follow. Known for wearing simple and chic pieces that anyone can wear, Klum says the secret to an awesome wardrobe is investing in a pair of great-fitting jeans that you can wear over and over, and a nice blazer. "Then pair them with booties and rotate in fun tops or tees. You'll be sophisticated and comfy. With a pair of heels, it even works for a meeting," she says. "I don't just buy fancy brands; there are a lot of fun things that aren't super-expensive. Experimenting with different trends, colours, and silhouettes is one of the best ways to find your own unique style." When it comes to individual style, Klum says it's okay to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. "I always try to find balance with my look. For example, if you're wearing an oversized top, pair it with a skinny bottom. If you're wearing a full skirt or a wide leg pant, stick with a fitted top, or a cropped jacket." Last but not least, always start with a 'good foundation'. "Choosing the right lingerie can make a huge difference in the way your clothes fit. Once you have the right pieces under your clothes, everything else falls into place," she says.

1. Simple Waves
Less is always more — and if Miranda Kerr can pull off simple waves at an elite function, so could you. Keep it sleek with a slight curl at the end… natural, simple and absolutely beautiful!
4. Braided Ponytail
Jessica Alba looks stylish with this ‘do, and so could you. Sweep your braided pintail to the side — it’s pretty and classy and perfect for a formal event.
7. Face-Framing Updo
While updo’s are usually associated with Matric farewells, it’s a style which manages to bling up any outfit — and allows you to be a little creative, be it a messy undo or a clean and pinned up look which brings out your features.

If you’re planning on making a statement in a dress showing off your shoulders, sweet your hair up in a high ballet bun. Both Natalie Portman and Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland have sported this look — and proven that it’s just gorgeous!
5. The Low Bun
While the high bun is fun and sexy, the low bun is sophisticated and modern, allowing you to feel like a lady in your formal dress and sexy high heels.
3. A Tousled Bob The Lob has been the look of the year — so scruff it up a bit and let your lob become a tousled bob. It’s fun, sexy and ready to party!

Gwen Stefani pulls this one off just great. It’s trendy, it’s stylish and it’s definitely not a hairstyle the other girls at the party will think of. And it’s easy to do, so what are you waiting for?
This is another favourite of Gwen Stefani’s and one that can only be pulled off by a certain type of person. So if you’re funky and adventurous and want a few heads to turn, try out the hair knot which is made of two knots — one is the twisted ponytail, the other the twisted bangs.

Pauls’ Stylish Salon A crush led to a successful career in styling.
M
ulti-award winning all-round hairdresser, Paul Stafford, reflects on the lessons that have carried him through the years. This issue he chats to Celeb Styles magazine. How did you get into hairdressing? I had a crush on the girl who cut my hair and she said the salon needed Saturday helpers and shampooists. I thought it might impress her if I said I wanted to do hair. It didn't but it started my career. How old where you when you started in the industry? I was nearly 16, so very young; it was a real wake-up call. I was always a pretty quiet kid but I seemed to take on a different persona in the salon. I was already experimenting with my image – clothes, hair and so on – so

it was a great setting for my development. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing and open your own salon? I loved the industry, the people, the opportunities and most of all the craft. I lived in Belfast during the troubles and it was pure escapism. During the mid-80s, Northern Irish hairdressing was so very strong because people in the industry were reacting against the background of religion and politics. Salons were competing with each other to be as progressive as they could, so it didn't matter if you were Catholic or Protestant, black or white, gay or straight. I loved it; and it was a natural progression for my wife, Leisa, and me to open our own salon to try to move to the next level. Taking NI hairdressing to a world stage has always been our goal . How has the hair industry changed since you started? The hairdressing industry changes every second, too quick to keep tabs on it. We must change, too. Everything changes and that's a good thing. Many hairdressers complain about changes in education, training and standards, but I think the hairdressing industry has never been better. It’s full of great talent, brilliant products and amazing tools. How many stylists do you have working for you? We are currently in a rebuilding process – Leisa and I have gone back into business after having been out of that side of things for three years. So we currently employ a small but brilliant team of about 16. | November / December 2015 | CELEB STYLES

Who is the best celebrity you’ve styled and why? I’ve found most celebrities pretty cool. Actors are usually in between parts or are in a role, so their hair is always in a state of transition. Musicians have strong images and tend to have strong ideas. Models are very conservative. I'd say sports stars are the new peacocks of fashion just look at David Beckham, Lewis Hamilton etc. My favourite is Ryder cup captain Darren Clarke, who is a client of mine. He’s got great fashion sense and brilliant hair and is a really nice guy. What makes your salon stand out from the rest? I think we are considered pretty progressive. Our salon looks unlike other salons. Everything I do is in the spirit of modernism – I try to never look back. Although my inspiration can come from the past I always have an eye on the future. We try to create our own image. Too many hairdressers take inspiration too literally; they see a brilliant look and they try to recreate it exactly as they see it. You need to put your own stamp on it – I think that's our calling card. What makes a great hairdresser? Technique, the ability to listen, awareness of their environment and global changes in art, fashion, music, economics and social development. To know is to learn – hair is about people, not hairdressers. These are the attitudes that make good hairdressers great. Have you got any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry? Only do it if you like people. | November / December 2015 | CELEB STYLES

You’ll face hard work, challenges and long hours, but you’ll find excitement, creativity and a lifelong career doing some of the most interesting things you can imagine. Oh, and it’s great if you want to stay forever young. Otherwise join the civil service. What is one product you can’t live without? It changes all the time. At the moment I'm into dusts and texturising sprays. There are loads of great ones, but Alfaparf VintagE Matt Talc is a favourite. What is one item every client should have? A Denman d4 brush or a Denman paddle brush. They are perfect for grooming, creating volume, wrap-drying and smoothing. Best of all you'll only ever need one. If my first boss hadn't put one in my hand more than 30 years ago I wouldn't be doing this interview. I became a hairdresser because I was taught to do hair using this brush. All my clients have one because it's essential to finish a great cut. And Vidal Sassoon said that. What styling products do you suggest? I always recommend good shampoos because it's the area clients skimp on most. They can see what a styling product does so they will buy that, but very few believe that a great shampoo makes a difference. Good shampoos are the bedrock of great hair. What is your favourite perk of the job? Travel. My ambassador role | November / December 2015 | CELEB STYLES

with Denman and Alfaparf means I get to see some amazing parts of the world – most recently South Africa, whose people and country I fell in live with. It’s a place I need to get back to very soon. Do you have a good work/ home life balance? No, I work too much. In fact I'm obsessive about it. My daughters Joni,14, and Ava,12, think I'm like a mad professor who locks himself away experimenting. I don't drink, smoke or socialise very much anymore – I love music, fashion, art, hair and my family. It's all one together, so they understand. I don't want to work less or live less. Colours to look forward to in 2016? Colours we are working on at the moment have metallic qualities but subdued, less artificial qualities. Steel, platinum, cobalt, rust, gold, silver and copper are the palette – and variations of that. Check out our latest collection, Muse, for reference. Styles to look forward to in 2016? Shapes are moving away from the Mad Max-inspired punk themes to stronger glamour looks and more psychedelic ‘60s vibe anti-head shapes. It means volume at the sides and back; less height on top. Fringes will curve around the hairline creating beautiful halos on varying lengths of hair. Combine this with metallic pastels and you get a very 21st-century modernist vibe. Halle Berry: Pixie Cut Halle Berry first debuted what would become her signature crop in 1993, promoting her role in the Queen miniseries. Her look has remained timeless over the years because she maintains it so well. This is a showstopper look for people who are bold and not afraid to have ultra short hair. You can also achieve this look with a weave, which can be cut according to your face shape. Terenzo Professional Haircare Urban Advantage will give short hair that spiky effect. You can also use a curling iron for more body. An oil sheen spray will give you the high gloss mist without weighing your hair down.
Beyoncé: Long Wavy Weave
Queen of fierce, Beyoncé’s long blonde hair — sleek or straight — is her trademark. It softens her skin tone and makes her eyes ‘pop’. This look is for people who are not afraid to lighten their hair and get that honey blonde. You can also achieve this look by putting on a weave and colouring it (just by the way, Queen Bey has access to some of the best, highest-quality and, yes, expensive, wigs and weaves in the world). There are different ways Beyoncé styles her hair: curly at the bottom, upstyle, French braid on the side and braids — it all depends on her mood and the occasion. To maintain Beyoncé styles opt for a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner to keep the colour vibrant and long lasting, and use hair spray after styling. Remember most weaves needs a serum to give your locks a high gloss finish with regular usage of essential oils such as Argan Oil or Morrocan Oil.

AFTER TIME By Vanessa Papas
Some hair styles are more fleeting than a shooting star, others stay on trend for decades to come. We take a look at some of our favourite celebrities and the iconic styles they’ve worn over the years that still turn heads today.
Rihanna: Mo-Hawk Pixie Style
From bold bobs to punk pixies, the pop star has done it all. Rihanna has sported a variety of looks over the years but the mega short, black pixie has quickly become her signature cut — with baby bangs and a shaved back end. This style suites daring women who are not afraid to try something new and be creative and risky with her hair. To maintain RiRi’s hair style ensure the colour is always bright and shimmering. Suggested products include Terenzo haircare range called Reload Shampoo And Conditioner, which maintains the different colours you put on your hair and minimises damage due to colouring hair. Finish the look with L’Oreal’s mythic oil for styling to give hair extra moisture.

Kerry Washington: Wavy Bob
Kerry Washington’ s style is a look that many woman like but are afraid to try. Her signature shoulder length, wavy bob with bangs is easy to get with the help of a weave. You can do anything on a weave and style it as desired. Kerry’s chic and glamorous style does not suite every women and you’ll need to take a close look at your lifestyles before deciding if this style is one you can properly maintain, especially the curls. Kerry’s hair is always soft and shiny — a look you can achieve at home with anti-residue shampoo and a regular deep recovery hair mask.
Solange: Afro
Solange's signature Afro is one of my favourite hairstyles. When it comes to natural hair, no one wears it best than Solange. Sadly, Solange ditched her Afro for a choppy pixie in 2014 but I'm hoping she goes back to the Afro. The Afro is for women who are not afraid to embrace their natural hair and who love to keep their natural curling. To maintain Solange's look you can use Mizani True Textures soft curl and curl set — they help the hair to be soft and the curls to lust longer. Keep in mind Afro virgin hair needs to be maintained by regularly washing your hair with a sulphate free shampoo and basing your scalp at least twice a week with Hair Food to keep hair healthy and strong.

FIVE MINUTES WITH NOMVUYO W
hat are the biggest mistakes ethnic women make when it comes to their hair, including styling, maintenance and the choice of style itself? Trying to copy a certain hairstyle they’ve seen in a magazine or on the Internet and forgetting their face shape and skin tone. Both should be taken into consideration. When it comes to styling your hair some women tend to stick to the same style and are afraid of change, which in turn makes their hair dull. Some women have a problem with maintaining their hairstyles because of the products they use, as they tend to put too much product on the hair, which ends up weighing the hair down. What five classic ‘dos have stood the test of time and why? Braids: They have been around for decades and have been modernised as the years have progressed. Box braids, twisted braids, straight back, straight up — you name it, these styles are still trending even now and will continue to trend. Relaxed hair: This style is perfect for women who don’t want the curl and prefer straighter hair. You can style it as desired and cut it in whichever style you like. Afro: This hair has a natural curl and is perfect for lovers of curly hair. It defines your face. Weaves: Weaves help your hair to have volume and you can do anything on a weave and style it as desired. Wigs: False hair pieces have been around since forever. Some women
prefer wigs to protect their natural hair and enable them to change styles at the click of a finger. Tell us a bit about the timeless bob style — who wears it best and why is it so fashionable? The conventional bob hair cut is shorter, smooth and attractively covers the ears, stopping anywhere between the chin and the shoulders. The simple cut is unchanged, although slight variations of the style have began to make this cut more attractive to the masses. Insider tips on how to wear the bob best? In the original form of the bob the hair is about chin-long with clearly defined contours. The bob is one of the most popular hairstyles in the world because it is so easy to create and maintain. Over the years, the hair length has become more varied and may now range from earlobe- to shoulder-length. This means that you can optimally adapt the style to the proportions of your face. This applies in particular to the newest bob interpretations with bevelled side hair. If your face is more on the long side you should opt for as short bob as possible. This will keep the focus square on your face. Some steps make the cut light and lively (nothing droops). A bob with soft lines works best for chiselled facial contours. A round face looks best with a longer bob cut with little volume on the sides of your face. What are the best styling products to use on black hair?
Wax for definition and hold, workable holding spritz, fast drying foam, heat styling and curling cream, workable high hold gel, setting lotion and heat protecting serum. What should ethnic women take into consideration when choosing which style to wear their hair? The first and most important thing that needs to be taken into consideration when you are choosing a hairstyle, is going to be your face type. Your hair dresser will be able to recommend the right style for your face type. Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is going to be the type of fashion that you typically wear. You need to be certain that the hairstyle that you choose is going to adequately match the clothing that you typically wear. For instance, if you wear rock style fashion, you’re likely want to hairstyle that is going to match that fashion, and would not wear something more suited for formal wear. The texture of your hair is going to be a key consideration. Are you looking to keep your curl type? Are you going to be colouring your hair on a regular basis? Consider the amount of time that you want to put into the hairstyle. This includes the amount of time that you want to spend getting your hair cut and styled at the salon, as well as the amount of time that you would like to spend styling it each and every day. Also look into the cost of the haircut. Certain styles, since they require more work, are going to cost you more than others.

7. Up And Away Keep hair out of your face while sleeping to keep its natural oils from wreaking havoc on your complexion. But avoid pulling it into a really tight bun or ponytail, because that can cause hair breakage, especially around the hairline.
10
TIP: Opt for a loose pony, like Khloe Kardashian right before bed.
If nails are looking dry, apply cuticle cream or oil and slip on gloves. You’ll wake up to healthy, hydrated nail beds. Now you just have to decide on the perfect colour nail polish.
10. Pearly Whites Whitening your teeth is the perfect thing do to while sleeping. Usually the whitening product has to stay on for a few hours anyway and you have to wait a while before you eat or drink anything so it would be better to do this before bed. There are even some natural remedies that you can use, like baking soda. Rub a little baking soda onto your teeth and leave it on for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly before climbing in bed.

YOUR QUESTIONS
ANSWERED...
Terry from Bloemfontein asks…What is pineappleing? I have curly hair and a friend said I should do that to my hair so that I don’t have to wash it every night. I didn’t want to come across as being stupid so I didn’t answer. Help! Elmari says… Pineappling is the magic way to get a secondday hair. Pineappleing is a very high ponytail on the top of your head that protects the curls while you are sleeping, so when you wake up the next day and undo your pony, your curls will still be nice and crispy without any frizz. Amy from Kempton Park asks… I’m 53 years old and want to grow my hair; do you think I’m too old? Elmari says…It all depends on how long you want to grow your hair — up to the shoulder and having it layered will still be fine but don’t grow it too long, because long hair has the intension to make people look even older than what their real age is.

Our expert Elmari Maartens From HairStreaks answers YOUR questions. Jade from Bedordview asks… How can you extend the life of your hair colour? Elmari says… By using the right home care products such as Color Extend from Redken that will protect your colour as well as your hair. Angela from New Zealand asks… Is it true that if I braid my hair it will grow faster? Elmari says… It is true but just to a certain extent. If you want to grow your hair faster the best way is stimulation on the scalp — by this I mean massaging your scalp on a regular basis to improve the blood flow and in turn will improve the hair growth.
Lindy from Springs asks… I love Taylor Swift’s curls! My hair is straight — should I get a spiral perm to get her curls?
Have a question or are you a stylist that would like to offer your expertise? Drop us a mail, write to stories@celebstylesmag.co.za in the subject box put ‘YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED’
Elmari says… Taylor Swift does not have a perm, her hair is either curled with a flat iron of miracurl that is only temporary. But if you want a more permanent look you can spiral perm your hair, however it will not be exactly the same as what she has.
Samantha from George asks…Which hair colours work best on greys? Elmari says… Redken Chromatics is one of the best colours you can ever ask for. The five reasons why we say that is as follows: 1. 2x fortified(leaving hair 2 x stronger after a colour) 2. Zero ammonia, zero odour (there is no discomfort or odour, just amazing colour) 3. 100% grey coverage (grey can be coloured flawlessly while leaving hair shiny, conditioned and fortified) 4. Multi-dimensional, 4D colour result (hair is infused with long lasting colour that is radiant and multi-dimensional — never dull or flat.) 5. Unlimited colour possibilities (the range includeds brilliant brune http://ledouxsalon.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/chromatics.jpg ttes, vibrant reds and beautiful blonds) Virginia from Boksburg asks… I’m a black lady who suffers with matted knots, what is the best product to use?
Kerry from Cape Town asks… I have curly hair and want to get layers; I’ve been advised against it, what do you think? Elmari says… Layers in curly hair can be done but to a certain extend. You must be careful not to layer your hair too short as it will just make the hairstyle unmanageable for you.
Elmari says… I would suggest Redken’s Diamond oil range for this — it has an oil base that will help you to easily comb through the hair and will also help with some moisture, strength, and smoothness, especially on your ends which are probably, dry — the reason why your hair knots so easily. It will also protect the hair from Hairstreaks Hair Design Team breakage.

1. Bowel Changes: Changes in your bowels may indicate either colon or rectal cancer. Frequent diarrhoea and constipation may indicate cancer, particularly if these bowel changes come on suddenly. These problems also may be accompanied by frequent gas and abdominal pain.
2. Rectal Bleeding: This is especially the case if you experience bleeding from the rectum every time you pass a bowel movement.
3. Urinary Changes: Incontinence and other urinary changes may develop as you age. However, changes such as leaks, delayed urination and straining during urination could be signs. Prostate cancer is most common in men ages 60 and older.
4. Blood In Urine: While prostate cancer doesn’t always cause symptoms in its earliest stages, blood in the urine can be one of them.
6. Unusual Coughing: A persistent cough is an early sign of lung cancer.
5. Persistent Back Pain: Common symptoms of colorectal and prostate cancers may not show until they spread to other parts of the body, such as the back.

8. Excessive Fatigue: Fatigue is especially prominent in colorectal cancers in men.

7. Testicular Lumps: Doctors look for these lumps during wellness checks in elderly men as well as those with a family history of testicular cancer. For earliest detection, consider checking for unusual lumps once a month. CELEB STYLES | November / December 2015 |
9. Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden, unexplained weight loss can indicate a serious health problem, including almost any type of cancer. 10. Lumps In Breast: Breast cancer is not exclusive to women — men also need to be on guard and check for suspicious lumps in the breast area.

1. Limit Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun cause many types of skin damage including skin cancer, freckles, age spots, wrinkles and discolourations. 2. Stay Hydrated: Skin that is properly hydrated retains pliability and prevents chapped skin or scaly, flaky skin — so drink lots of water, use the right mustering cream and take warm showers or baths.
4. Use Gentle Skin Care: Make sure to wash your face twice daily to remove dirt, oils, germs, and dead cells. And remember to pat your skin dry — don’t rub — then apply your facial moisturiser.
3. Take Health Precautions: Cold sores are caused by a viral infection of the skin bordering the lips, while bacteria can contribute to acne and other skin conditions. Don’t share lip balms or toothbrushes or drinks.
5. Know Your Skin: Pay attention to odd freckles, moles, and growths on your skin, and consult your doctor if you notice any changes.
6. Cover Up: The sun’s rays are most intense between 10h00 and 16h00 so stay indoors during this time, or if you must be outdoors, cover up and wear sunscreen. 9. Protect From Reflected Light: Keep in mind that even umbrellas or shade trees provide only moderate protection from ultraviolet light, and they don’t protect you from rays reflected off sand, snow, concrete and many other surfaces.

7. Spread On Sunscreen: Wear a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Waterproof sunscreen is best if you’ll be swimming.
8. Protect Your Ears: This is one area we all forget and according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 80 percent of skin cancers occur on the head, neck and hands — so wear a hat!
10. Don’t Be Fooled By The Weather: Take care on cool, cloudy days too — you can still get burned.

Clere Radiance
There’s a reason that this is on top of the list. SPF is the single most important step that everyone (not just women) needs in their daily routine. It shields against sun damage and pollution and helps to prevent brown spots and wrinkless. Sun protection should be at the top of your list for a daily moisturiser.
4. Signature Perfume Just like every celeb has their own fragrance, you too need a scent that is 100 percent you. Most of us probably already have one that people compliment us on every time we sprits. Thierry Mugler

wner of Absolut Hair, Steven who has been in the industry for 23 years chats to us on how he got started and what made him open his own salon. How did you get started? Curious and eager to learn I started working on weekends and holidays from standard 9 through to the end of matric, following which I completed my two year national service – during which time several cadets fell victim to my untrained cutting skills. I still practise and teach the lessons I learnt in those early days. After several years of intense competing (provincially as well as nationally) and building a loyal clientele – I wanted more of a challenge and decided to open my own salon. Having had exposure to so many facets of hairdressing, I had accumulated valuable information over the years – so naturally I moulded it into what is Absolut Hair today. We opened our doors in January, 2000. What makes Absolut Hair so different from other salons? We believe it is our relaxed, yet professional manner, but specifically our attention to detail and listening to our clients needs, is what makes us unique. We also have our own unique 6-step consultation process. We are all cut and colour specialists and we do regular training seminars to stay on top of trends. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing? I love interacting with people and have always been drawn to anything

artistic. Hairdressing gave me all that and more – I have been involved in the hairdressing trade since 1987 and still loving every minute. What makes a great hairdresser? Someone who is driven to always better themselves and never stops learning, someone who listens and understands their clients’ needs and who is prepared to go the extra mile…you are only as good as your last service. What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? We stock a few brands (SP, R.E.F, Sebastian, Nioxin) so depending on the specific needs of the client – the correct homecare regime will be recommended. What styling products do you suggest? Both Sebastian Professional and R.E.F of Sweden have some brilliant styling products. R.E.F is a new label that is sulphate and paraben free. How has the hair industry changed since you started? There have been a great number of changes – fashion, products, techniques etc. But the one thing that remains the same is our ability to create and re-create, giving our clients more confidence and boosting their self esteem. Name a few hair tips that you swear by? Flat hand tease – use the palm of the hand – flat on top of head – move anti clockwise and finger into position – this creates natural volume for shorter hairstyles
and for longer hair – A loose plait or a messy bun can quickly transform your hair for those unforeseen events. Name the products you can’t live without? R.E.F — Leave-in Conditioner (which acts as a detangling spray) Sebastian — Taming Elixir Sebastian — Volupt Spray Have you got any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry? If you do what you love – you will love what you do. Be present and learn as much as you can, we never know it all you get as much out as you put in, give it your all and you will be rewarded. What is your favorite perk of the job? As owner I guess the best perk for me is that I can choose who I work with. What is the best style you have ever done? 3rd place Nationally – L’Oreal Colour Trophy 2004 and transforming Helen Zille in 2011. What styles can we look forward to in 2016? Quite a variety of cuts from trendy bobs to medium and long layered looks. Fringes are blunt but textured. Buzz cuts – Beyoncé’s latest look. All shades of brown, ombre still fashionable. Warm blondes are very in for fall. Break up solid blondes with hardly noticeable darker accents – this will create the illusion of fuller thicker hair and create texture.

hantel Palmer has been a hairdresser for 16 years, she started her career in grade 12 as an apprentice; she then went on and did her apprenticeship at 18 at Hair Obsessions, where she worked for eight years. She completed her qualification as a hairdresser and then moved to Richards Bay and joined Hairstreaks where she’s been working for the past eight years. We asked her what makes Hairstreaks different from other salons. ‘I like the atmosphere and it’s a funky salon and the owners make me feel as that I’m part of a family’. Chantel inspired herself to get into hairdressing and what she says what makes a great hairdresser is passion, dedication and compassion. She swears by using Redken products and says ‘every client should have decent hair products’ and suggests using Roughman, Redken Antisnap and Diamond Oil. She says being a hairdresser is never dull as you learn something new each day.

o you want to become a hairdresser? A stylist that everyone talks about, looks up to and admires? Anyone can cut hair — but not everyone can be a good hairdresser. And while you might have the skill and talent, experts say you need the driving energy to be great in this industry — it’s a passion, it needs enthusiasm, and you need to make sure you’re ready for what it has to offer. We share some tips on the industry and things you should consider if you’re going into the field, or about to start out in the world of hair and everything beautiful.
1.
Ask yourself: Do I really want to become a hairdresser?
Does it interest you? Have you always loved creating styles? Are you adventurous? These all play a part in your future career, say experts in the field — everyone wants a creative, open-minded stylist who is ready to create magic.
2.
Are you a hard worker?
You will be on your feet for at least eight hours a day, five to six days a week. You have to run around the salon, deal with multiple clients and keep a smile on while doing so. In short, you always need to bring your A-Game.
3.
IS STYLING
You have to study
While there is a lot of practical work involved, you will have to study to work as a hairdresser — and you need to

Project great energy and attitude
It’s not just about the creativity in the salon, but about your energy, fabulous attitude and great technical skills — it’s a package which will help you become successful and love every minute of the work you do.

Make social media a part of your daily routine
Not only is this good for your clientele, but a great way for people to see what you’ve worked on — especially if you’re doing bridal parties and matric dances.

Are you a good listener?
You better be! Not only will you have to listen to people’s gossip and troubles — which women love to offload on their stylist — but you need to listen to your clients needs. Experts say you should really understand what they mean when they talk about the ‘transformation’ of their hair, which often means a transformation of themselves.

he great thing about owning a pair of boyfriend jeans, says Shashi Naidoo, is that no male specimen is needed and the above-mentioned jeans can either be a trend or a staple. “I believe that every girl needs this uber and trendy item in their closet,” the pretty brunette explains. “The key to wearing boyfriend jeans is chicness, effortlessness and simplicity. The jeans look great with a basic white T or a blazer.” Then again, Shashi would look absolutely fabulous whether in a pair of boyfriend jeans, or wearing a potato sack! The 34-year-actress, model and television anchor always looks glam. She has an inner radiance that’s hard to ignore (and that’s fierce enough to light up any room). What makes her imsistable — stunning looks aside — is her love life and downto-earth personality. With Shashi,

what you see is what you get — and that’s a pretty rare find in the world of celebrities. “I’m straightforward and as open as a book. I live my life positively and love hard. Don’t get it wrong though, I stand up for what I believe in and defend the ones I love. I’m a quirky social butterfly and driven entrepreneur at the same time,” she says. For Shashi, beauty is a completely subjective concept. It’s something that she has realised varies vastly in definition from person to person. At 34, the things she has come to find truly beautiful are kindness, loyalty and bravery. It’s no wonder she thinks the most beautiful person alive today is radio host Anele Mdoda. Having personally worked alongside Anele, we know just how genuine a person she is. Shashi and Anele are not only work colleagues — having cohosted talk-show Tongue In Cheek (aired on SABC 3 last year) together,
but bosom buddies as well. Aside from kindness, loyalty and bravery, there are a few things you can do to always put your best food forward. Shashi’s top beauty secrets aren’t secrets at all — most women already know them but not all stick to them. “Drink eight glasses of water a day. I have noticed that my friends who never drank their daily quota have aged a lot faster. Never go to bed with your make-up on! My make-up is usually the second thing I take off… after my heels. Spend more money on your daily skin care regime than a once a month facial splurge; and remember, consistency is key so rather save up to buy the entire range and give yourself a weekly facial,” she says. Shashi’s biggest beauty splurge would definitely be the La Prairie range — extravagant skincare products that provide ageless beauty with the fusion of science, art and luxury.
N Shashi’s style icon is Olivia Palermo, because ‘she is inherently stylish’.

Shashi says she lives by a Chinese proverb — Live as if you are going to die tomorrow, and learn as if you are going to live forever. “Every experience I’ve had, whether big or small; I make sure that it counts and I take something away from it. Life is a celebration, sometimes there are fireworks, balloons, sunshine and colour. There are times when it’s all dark and gloomy. But you should never forget that’s it’s a celebration and have fun with everything that you do,” she says.
Shashi makes being fashionable seems so effortless.

When it comes to keeping your hair always looking shiny and in good condition Shashi swears by the ‘investment’ of a great hairdresser (as well as a ‘Patricia Lewis’ hair flick just before a big night out or glam event for added instant volume!). “My hair goes through a lot of abuse considering the colouring, and daily straightening, tonging and teasing. A lady should always have two numbers on speed dial — her best friend and her hairdresser. I have been going to Charlene (Schlorke) from Gary Rom for years. She’s my saving grace. She always knows what’s best for my hair. Quite recently though there has been a god-send in hair care called Olaplex. It’s how all the celebs like Kim K go from brown to platinum blonde in a day and still manage to have a healthy head of hair. When explained, the science is mind blowing. But all you need to know is that is it brings the hair you might have thought past the
disaster cases with models left with huge balding spots and very little hair left.” While South Africa is home to some amazing fashion designers, Shashi says her favourite fashion is David Tlale (noted as the Best Designer by the Sunday Times in South Africa).”I’m a self-confessed shoe addict and fashion lover and have a fabulous collection from all over the world,” says Shashi. “I’m so blessed to have a job that allows me to travel and see the world. One of my greatest passions is interior decorating and if I wasn’t doing what I do now I would be following in the footsteps of my favourite icons Kelly Hoppen. I actually did the interiors of my own home and it’s my pride and joy!” Shashi enjoys both dressing up and dressing down. “I have two looks — glamorous enough for the red carpet or a homeless drug addict! There is no in between,” she laughs.
point of no return, back to life!” Worst hairstyle she’s tried? “Without doubt, bangs... not my finest moment!,” she giggles. “I haven’t been the most adventurous when it comes to my hair but I always cringe at old photos when I thought bangs worked for me. When it comes to long or short, I definitely prefer longer styles — I think they suit me better. I think short styles look great on the more mature sophisticated woman so I feel while I still can, I am going to rock the longer feminine hair.” Until two years ago when she became the Wella Koleston brand ambassador Shashi had virgin hair. She now enjoy adding soft blonde highlights in summer and having rich chocolate colour for winter. “I’m not pro or for hair extensions,” she adds. “I do believe if maintained properly extensions are great for adding volume and won’t cause damage. But if not looked after with the proper care, I have seen proper
Five things SHASHI can’t live without? “My iphone, my DStv Explora, my MovementX classes, my Vogue subscription and my daily cuddles for Annie.” And for those of you who aren’t sure who Annie is, it’s Shashi’s beloved four-legged child! “I have been blessed with many opportunities and experiences in my life, which are unforgettable and will always be
etched in my memory. One of the highlights was the first time I met my puppy Annie, she was that ray of sunshine during a dark time in my life!” That’s not to say that Annie will be the only kid in Shashi’s life. “I would really love to have children one day. There is something about children that just heals the soul,” she says. | November / December 2015 | CELEB STYLES
