o be a stylist takes hard work and dedication. If you think about it, stylists are not allowed to be in a bad mood as they are dealing with clients all the time. And to be a successful stylist you have to make your clients happy as Juanita says ‘A happy client just walks so much taller, I can create priceless Happiness.’ Juanita has been in the hair industry for 26 years, she has built up a successful salon in Cape Town called Passion For Hair Salon, she doesn’t have to use social media to promote her salon as her books are already booked for the year ahead. Now that is one success story. If you’re thinking of just starting out in the industry turn to pages 50 and 51 as she shares some tips with us.

50 SHADES OF BLUE By Vanessa Papas

“Being beautiful has nothing to do with looks. Beauty comes from within. There is nothing more disappointing than a pretty face with an ugly personality.” — Blue Mbombo

W

hen it comes to all things bright and beautiful the talented Thandi Mbombo, aka Blue Mbombo, ticks all the right boxes. She's one of the most talked about local celebrities and with her savvy high-end fashion sense she's always on trend when it comes to the latest hair, beauty and fashion before it even hits runways. For Blue, it's not about following the masses — she's never been a crowd 'tailer', so to speak, and nor does she ever want to be. It's about creating 'your own' style, and using the gifts (and assets) Mother Nature endowed you with, to create your own unique persona. Who are some of your fashion/ beauty icons? Who inspires you? "I've always looked to reality TV star Pokello Nare and world-renowned fashion model Millen Happiness Magese as my style icons, simply because they don't follow trends, they create their own. They dress according to their bodies, even when they wear revealing clothes, they do not look trashy. Of course, there are a few criteria one should keep in mind when it comes to looking fabulous. Always dress according to your body; your fashion sense should say who you are, without you saying a word; always leave a bit of hair (especially the edges) when sporting a plait; when in doubt about the occasion put your heels on and, above all, smile... often. It's the best accessory you wear!" How do you maintain that gorgeous mane? "I think hair that is shiny and in good condition is more important than the length, style or colour of your hair. It's important to find a hairdresser who understands your hair type and your lifestyle. Ruutos Hair not only saved my hair, but my life! I call them the 'gods of hair'. They are incredible. They used to sponsor Big Brother Mzansi, that's how I met them. They have a great range that includes full lace wigs, synthetic wigs, clip-in extension, and weft hair. They can help you achieve a whole new look and are always at your service to help you every step of the way with your hair needs. My choice of an over-the-counter shampoo and conditioner? If I can't get hold of professional products, I use Kair. When it comes to my hair colour and style, I like being creative. I've tried all sorts of hues from green, pink and blue to blonde, red and, of course, brown. I'd have to say blonde, pink and brown suits me best. I once had my hair styled into a green mohawk. It was crazy and drew attention everywhere I went. I absolutely loved it. One of my worst, most ridiculous hair

8

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

memories is when I had a blonde fringe weave back in 2010. It was so wrong!" When it comes to spending money, what’s your biggest beauty splurges? "When I have cash to burn I don't mind splashing out on skincare products and beauty spas, and I love having detox treatments done. I think your chosen fragrance says a lot about you and I'm never without a touch of Mademoiselle by Coco Chanel. It's an oriental fragrance and it's got this classy scent that last forever. It's a fragrance people remember you by. Then, of course, I love buying beautiful clothes by great designers. My favourite designer is Sello Medupe, aka Scalo! I really enjoy dressing up. I dress up for every occasion. Looking good is a sign of respect — not only respect for yourself but respect for others too." What’s your opinion on hair extensions and accessories? Hair extension are part of beauty accessories, which enhances ones' confidence. I have no issues with them. They only become a problem when they are not being taken care of. I love wearing hair accessories. I'm so crazy about tiaras and crowns because, afterall, I'm 'The Duchess' and I like to bling it on. Five things you can’t live without? God, my family, great food, my phone and cameras. Any life advice that you live by? My famous motto 'inspired by impossible'. What do you think is the hardest part about being in the public eye? People think just because you are on TV you are automatically rich. As a result you are expected to live a certain lifestyle, eat at certain restaurants and shop at certain places. This is why some celebs are in serious debt. Your career has really taken off. Where to now? I always say I'm still a 'mafikizolo' in this industry. I am not where I want be... yet. However, I'm really pushing very hard to get where I want to be. So all I can say now is that in a year or two you will tell people that I once interviewed her! You were voted Mzansi Sexiest Female Celebrity 2016. How does that feel? It feels totally amazing...I feel like I have redefined the word 'sexy'. People expect 'a sexy' to have big boobs, big curves, and a big bum. I have always said sexiness is an attitude. It doesn't matter what size you are. I hope other women who have no big boobs and big curves like me will feel better about themselves.

BE A HEALTHIER

& HAPPIER By Angela Bekiaris

YOU!

Being healthy is a lifestyle change, so start making changes!

A

pril is Health Awareness Month, so we’re sharing some ways you can stay slim, trim, and oh-sohealthy — which in turn means happy and content. Yes, that’s right… fad diets are so last season. It’s time to make some serious lifestyle changes — because being healthy and happy is all about a lifestyle change, not a new exercise regimen which will disappear in a month or so. Make the changes you need to get healthy and stay healthy — and smile as you see great results, all day, every day!

10

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

30 TIPS TO A HEALTHIER YOU

1. Take stock — get a handle on your life status. Make appointments with your doctor and dentist, assess your activity, keep a food diary, measure your height and weight. 2. Put out fires — if you know you have a chronic health issue, treatment is priority. 3. Move more — yes that means off the couch and getting your heart rate up a bit. Go for a walk, run, hike… join a class, put in a fitness DVD. We don’t care — we just want you active and happy. 4. Upgrade your diet — eat more fruits and vegetables, less snacking, skip the guilt, plan your meals, eat slowly and savour your meals, focus on portion control. 5. Manage stress — develop personal coping skills, meditate, find ways to handle very stressful situations. Keep a journal, volunteer… and don’t forget to breath. 6. Sleep better — no more TV before bed, enjoy a long, hot bath before you hit the pillow, avoid exercise before bedtime, set a regular sleep schedule, avoid sugary drinks or ones with caffeine. 7. Improve your relationships — stay away from negative people, and make time for good friends and close family. Get out there, socialise, spend time with those who matter, build face-to-face relationships — and get help if any of your close relationships are in trouble. 8. Challenge your mind — stimulate your brain, stay in the know, stay aware and participate in activities that involve other people. 9. Quit smoking — you will feel and look healthier in no time. Plus you’re avoiding health problems later on. 10. Cut down on drinking — enjoy a social drink when need be, but avoid alcohol on a daily basis. This not only causes health problems, but ages you. 11. Eat healthy foods — not just your five portions of fruit and veg, but choose healthier options when grocery shopping, eating out or cooking at home. 12. Keep your family healthy — this will not only help you stick to goals but ensure that everyone in the house is following the same healthy lifestyle and routine. 13. Focus on gratitude — this helps build a healthier immune system and boosts overall health. 14. Eat like a kid — look to finger food options like carrots and celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, grapes and berries. 15. Be a picky eater — limit saturated fats and trans

fats, and aim to eat more foods rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. This will even improve your moods. 16. Use foods over supplements — despite what you may have been told, supplements are not a substitute for a good diet. Taking a multivitamin is great but don’t replace meals with supplements at any time. 17. Give yourself a break — take time out, prioritise and delegate. You can’t do everything yourself. 18. Cook from scratch — this is probably one of the most important skills you can learn, and gives you control over what you’re eating. 19. Eat a balanced diet — your diet should contain each of the food groups in the correct proportions. 20. Eat the rainbow — enjoy a wide range of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, pulses, nuts, seeds, whole grains and naturally low fat dairy foods. 21. Eat nutritious calories — the majority of your energy intake should come from nutritious calories that also provide your body with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre and good fats. Avoid empty calories. 22. Don’t skip breakfast — it kick-starts your metabolism and helps you to be alert and awake throughout the day. Make it wholesome. 23. Read the small print — it's important to read packaging correctly. 24. Drink lots of water — it is an essential part of your diet. There's no secret here! 25. Avoid fizzy drinks, energy drinks or juices with added sugar. Eat your calories don't drink them. 26. Get plenty of sunlight — there are many benefits from vitamin D, including a reduced risk of several forms of cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis, as well as improved immune function. 27. Start a new exercise regimen — but one that you enjoy and will stick to. Choose something beneficial and safe, not one which is trending. 28. Have an annual check-up — the older you get, the more checks you need. Don’t ever skip this one. 29. Stay out of debt — you don’t need the extra stress and worries. Stress is a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. 30. Live life to the fullest — life is too short not to indulge a little, play a lot and laugh every second possible.

BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT By Angela Bekiaris

Hair and beauty tips from the stars of the upcoming movie.

C

alvin and his longtime crew are back in Barbershop: The Next Cut, set to hit screens on April 15 — but the shop has undergone some major changes.

Most noticeably, the once maledominated sanctuary is now co-ed. With stars including Nicki Minaj and Regina Hall, we were inspired to find out more about their own hair and beauty tips….

Nicki Minaj

Minaj will star as Draya, a hairdresser at Calvin’s Barbershop in the upcoming film, The Next Cut — the third film in the Barbershop series. Known for her crazy wigs, over the top make-up and extremely exaggerated fashion sense, there’s no doubt the rapper is suited for a role in a salon. Nicki is a woman of a thousand hair looks — she’s tried every colour, cut and weave, yet always goes back to her first love: platinum blonde locks. As for her flawless skin, the star reveals that she religiously removes her make-up before bed and incorporates mineral-rich Aloe Vera water into her diet, which has an ultra-hydrating effect on skin as well as helping digestion and immune function. “I definitely wouldn’t say [my skin is] flawless! If I fall asleep with my make-up on, I’ll definitely have a breakout. And I’ve been drinking Aloe Vera water. It doesn’t taste nice, but it works,” she once explained. The star also never leaves the house without a slick of liquid eyeliner because, according to her, it enhances her dramatic Barbie-inspired beauty look. “I always make sure I have perfect eyeliner before I apply lashes. I have really small eyes so a liquid liner helps open them up and disguise the lashline.”

Garcelle Beauvais

The actress, who plays Loretta, is one striking woman. When it comes to beauty, she says “I have eczema so I have to be very careful. I moisturize a lot and exfoliate. My go to skincare products for my face are Bioelements Moisture Positive Cleanser and Epicuren Hyrdo Plus Moisturizer. For my body, I keep it simple and use Dove Body Wash and Lotion. I truly believe you have to pamper yourself, as a busy mom of two small active boys, I don’t get as much time to go to the spa, so I turned my own bathroom into a serenity place. I soak in there, I pray and meditate in that room. It is where I let my hair down and the day go. Sunscreen is a must.”

Jazsmin Lewis Jazsmin, who also starred in the first two Barbershop movies as Jennifer Palmer, looks fabulous for a woman who is about to turn 40. She says “I do all the same stuff that every woman does. I try to take care of my skin. I drink a gallon of water a day. I exercise — but its honestly just staying active and keeping up with my son [Christian].” As for her tresses, they’re long and sexy and get heads turning along with her gorgeous physique.

14

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

Eve

According to famous rapper Eve — who plays Terri on the film — sunglasses are the essential eye make-up fix. Eve has also been known for her hairstyles over the years — since her hip-hop debut in the late '90s, Eve has rocked many different hairstyles, from a bright red pixie to her current brunette waves. Eve, who also travels a lot, says "When I fly, I wash off all my makeup, and I use Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I don't care how crazy I look, because I'm shiny [when I wear it]. I also always have perfume — my favourite is called Florence by Tocca — and a gloss or colour stick in a pink or orange.” As for her onstage essential items, Eve doesn’t always have a full team of beauty personnel behind her performance makeup — she often does it all herself.

Regina Hall

As For The Men……

With stars including Ice Cube, Common, Cedric The Entertainer, Lamorne Morris, Sean Patrick Thomas and Anthony Anderson, it’s a film filled with hunky men who will have you drooling from the start. All known for their work in Hollywood, as well as being well-groomed, we bet the ladies on set enjoyed every minute, too.

The gorgeous actress, who plays Angie in the upcoming film, has never been a victim of a bad hair day — well, not one we have witnessed, at least. Be it on the red carpet, on screen or off, Regina is known to keep her curls at her shoulders — and has wowed us with a short bob and cute undoes in the past. As for her beauty regimen, Regina swears by a moisturizer from Whole Foods: Avalon Organics Vitamin C products. “I combine the oil-free version with argan oil (it doesn’t clog my pores!).” As for her favourite beauty product, “Dior has these amazing lip glosses,” she says. “They’re almost sheer. You can wear them alone or with a lipstick — they’re so beautiful. They excenuate your lips in this extraordinary way. I’m also very into thick brows right now!” | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

15

NAOMI WATTS

While we don’t know if she really had the chop, or just put on a wig for her role as Princess Diana, she sure grabbed our attention with the new look. Apart from looking just like the former Duchess, we weren’t used to the Australian-born babe looking so conservative and all.

ANNE HATHAWAY

The actress lopped off her iconic chestnut waves for her role as Fantine in the critically-acclaimed Les Miserables — and boy was it a change! Sources reveal she even handed a fellow actress the scissors to do the haircut live on camera. Now that’s what we call dedication — and loving your job.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

The Oscar-winning actress transformed her lovely blonde for Katniss Everdeen’s dark tresses in her role in The Hunger Games. The role has done her justice — and made her loads of money, so we bet she’s not complaining about the horrible hair ‘do now.

16

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

KALEY CUOCO

The Big Bang Theory star was known for her long blonde locks — until she started a new season with a short pixie cut, leaving everyone lost for words. While she’s luckily blessed with great genes, we did refer the long hair, however Kaley admitted that it was only done for a new movie role. She chopped the locks we all knew and loved for a movie she was filming in New Mexico — indie drama Burning Bodhi. After making the change, she even offered to wear extensions on EMMA STONE The Big Bang Theory, but the The gorgeous red head coloured producers were 'on her side’ her hair for a Spider-Man role — and and wrote it in. she didn’t make a slight change either. Emma hit the peroxide to play Gwen Stacy on the popular movie franchise.

HAIR

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

For his role as cancer victim in 50/50, Joseph shaved his head on camera in a completely improvised moment. We still remember him starting out on 3rd Rock From The Sun.

By Angela Bekiaris

I

One simple cut or colour can make a celebrity totally unrecognisable.

t takes one movie role to leave an actor looking, well, rather strange for few months. We take a look at some hairstyles the stars have had to sport while filming new roles — and while sometimes the ‘do is actually better, it takes some time to get used to it. And we’re not talking about for them. | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

17

DEMI MOORE

The actress paved the way for stars like Natalie Portman, when she shaved her head for her role in G.I. Jane. But in true Demi style, she still managed to get men drooling.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL

We barely recognised Zooey when she sported angelic blonde locks in Elf. The star had admitted that she dyes her naturally brown hair black, but the sudden change to blonde was a difference for her — and the rest of us.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL

He is one gorgeous star — and somehow his look in Prince Of Persia made him even hotter. We loved the hair and the bod.

18

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

NATALIE PORTMAN

Dying your hair is one thing — shaving it off, as a women, is another. Natalie Portman, being the amazing actress that she is, took her role in V For Vendetta seriously, shaving her head — a harsh buzzcut we all turned heads over.

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY The hunky actor didn’t look quite that hunky when he shaved his hair off for his role in Gold. Throughout his lengthy career, the actor's dabbled back and forth between shaggy shoulder-length locks and cropped haircuts, so the shaved look left us all a little lost for words, we must say.

VANESSA HUDGENS

Vanessa ditched her trademark dark locks for bleached blonde tresses in Spring Break. Then again, with her features and great body, she could pull off anything. | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

SLINGBACKS

A pair of sling backs is sexy and classy. They dress up your look and are extremely comfortable. Some people are a bit on the fence about it as some believe it to be old fashioned as well as frumpy. You don’t have to think that way by investing in modernized pair instead of a style we all know, which are sling backs with a big printed floral attachment.

Move over, Ombre!

ver the past few years, hair colour has known no bounds. There was the pastel trend (that’s still going by the way), ombre, sombre and even shades of grey. This had us at Celeb Styles wondering what could be next in the world of

hair hues? We were pleasantly surprised to see the bronde trend emerge. There’s a fine line between blonde and brunette with bronde, the newest colour that celebs are loving. Plus, it’s the perfect colour to update your autumn hair! | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

SOO YO

1. Masked Beauty

When winter hits, production of lipids (skin oils that seal in moisture) falters. The easiest way to replenish this loss is by adding a hydrating mask to your skincare routine. Look for one that contains urea and lactic acid. These ingredients attracts and seals in moisture, so skin stays hydrated longer. Use a mask twice a week after cleansing, apply it to damp skin and leave on until it has dried. Hydrating Mask:

2. Go Go Gadget

Everyone is embracing electricity in their skincare routine and it really works. Energy-based skincare is a completely new approach that uses electro-stimulation to create low lever currents that rejuvenate skin. This used to be only available in professional salons and aesthetic centres, but now you can take your miracle skincare device home with you. Some of these devices also promise to even out skin tone, clear up breakouts and blemishes, moisturise and give you cleaner feeling skin. Totally worth the buck.

4. Mist It

Humidity levels often drop as low as ten percent during the dry season – and 35 to 40 percent is considered optimal for skin to stay hydrated – yikes! A countermeasure? Give yourself a boost of hydration with a facial mist. These should perk up your complexion, but should be light enough that your make-up won’t be ruined. Spray as needed throughout the day. 5. Buff Stuff

Make-up is a saving grace during the winter months. But lay off the summer bronzer. This will look too harsh against a pale winter complexion. Rather, mix a drop of a tinted moisturiser that is slightly darker than your skin tone with your regular foundation to give you a subtle pickme-up. Because it is a moisturiser that is being added into foundation, it will look like a hint of healthy colour.

To reveal healthy skin, you should buff dry, flaky skin away. Removing dull skin cells reveal new skin underneath, help keep pores clear of trapped debris and makes skin products penetrate skin better. To tackle rough skin, weekly at-home microdermabrasion treatments can be implemented. For normal and combination skin, crushed crystal particles are a good choice, because they effectively remove dead cells without stripping skin of protective oils. For sensitive skin, choose something gentler, like a powder exfoliator. A warning for all skin types: If skin is red, stinging or burning, avoid exfoliation until skin is back to normal. IS DRINKING AFFECTING YOUR HAIR? By Angela Bekiaris

The effects of alcoholism on your hair — what you should know!

Y

Courtesy of www.the-alcoholism-guide.org, www.naturallycurly.com and www.myvitamins.com

ou love a drink, or two… or more. But have you ever wondered what alcohol does to your hair? Yes it’s not great for your health — or your hips — we know that, but have you ever stopped to wonder what your binge drinking is doing to your gorgeous tresses? According to experts, drinking alcohol every day causes hair loss. Experts reveal that while hair loss is caused by stress, in many cases binge drinking is caused by stress too — which in turn leaves you with thinner hair, or worse, bald patches everywhere! But it’s not just the stress you have to worry about. We share some reasons excessive drinking can affect your locks. And remember, alcoholism is bad for your overall health — there are more serious, physical effects of alcoholism, as well as the effects of those living with an alcoholic.

44

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

Did You Know?

The lifespan of each particular strand of hair is usually between five and seven years. However, external factors such as ageing, malnutrition and consumption of alcohol can shorten the lifespan of hair and result in hair loss.

It Affects The Levels Of Estrogen & Zinc Alcoholism affects the levels of estrogen and zinc in the body which stunts hair growth and causes hair loss. When you’re drinking alcohol it decreases the level of zinc in the body. Excessive drinking raises the level of estrogen, high levels of estrogen result in hair loss. Zinc is essential for healthy hair growth. It Lowers Levels Of Vitamins B And C Drinking too much alcohol lowers complex B vitamins and vitamin C in your body. The B Vitamins, known collectively as B-complex vitamins have a number of functions within the body including: nervous system function, immune system function and energy production. B vitamins help us to metabolise food sources, providing nutrients to the whole body including the hair and hair follicles. Deficiencies of vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B5 can result in poorly nourished hair follicle cells, potentially causing hair to become brittle and stunt hair growth. Vitamin B7 (Biotin) is also essential for maintaining the texture, tone and strength of your locks, and a deficiency can lead to hair loss. This vitamin can also be used to treat cradle cap; a scalp condition which affects infants. B vitamins are also vital for healthy skin and nails. Some signs of a vitamin C deficiency include dry and splitting hair; gingivitis or inflammation of gums, scaly skin, reduction of the wound healing rate, easy bruising, nosebleed; and a decreased ability to ward off infections. It Decreases Folic Acid Levels Folic acid is also vital in maintaining healthy and strong hair. Not getting enough Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid can also slow down cell division within the hair follicles, which also slows down hair growth. If you don’t have enough folic acid in your diet, you may end up with a folic acid deficiency. Certain foods, like citrus juices and dark green vegetables, are particularly good sources of folate. A lack of folic acid can lead to a deficiency in just a few weeks — one of those is anemia, a condition where you have too few RBCs. Anemia can deprive your tissues of oxygen it needs, because red blood cells carry the oxygen. This may affect their function. Pregnant women should also take extra folic acid to help prevent spina bifida and other related problems in the baby. | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

Unhealthy Diet Alcoholics very seldom have a healthy diet — and fast food isn't going to help your gorgeous locks. The fact that alcoholics rarely have a balanced diet can add to vitamin deficiencies which contributes to weakened hair. You might be surprised to learn that you need a balanced diet to have healthy, shiny hair. Experts agree that a healthy diet with the right mix of protein, iron, and other nutrients can help improve the health, look, and feel of your hair. A balanced diet can give

46

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

your hair all the nutrients it needs to satisfy both definitions for healthy hair, say experts. Alcohol Worse For Curly Hair Sources also reveal that products which contain alcohol are worse for curly hair, which has a tendency to need all the moisture it can get. When To Worry About Hair Loss Experts say that losing small amounts of hair is not something that you should concern yourself

with — in fact, it’s a very normal occurrence. Studies have shown that 10 percent of our hair is in a state of constant rest and has a possibility of falling off. The remaining 90 percent is kept in constant growth at an average rate of about 1cm a month. The time to start worrying about hair loss is when your normal pattern of hair loss changes and it is only you who can determine what normal is. If you are worried about losing hair, then it is time to visit your physician/ doctor.

M

eeting Juanita Schmidt was like I had known her for years, being in the industry for 26 years she has managed to build up a loyal clientele. She has a shining glow in her eyes and you can just feel that she has such passion for what she does — she’s an excellent stylist and doesn’t believe in using social media for her salon. Juanita is bubbly and full of life and you can feel the love she has for styling when she chatted to CS. When did you become a hairdresser? I started my hairdressing career in 1990 with my master hairdresser Siegfried Zepperitz. at his salon in Cape Town, Siegfried’s Art In Hair. What makes Passion For Hair so different from other salons? I do really believe that I have a good client’s ear. I will listen intently to a client in consultations. I look at pictures they show me to determine what they see and what taste they have in styles, I’m always truthful and realistic and I tell them exactly what they can expect and what happens in a colour process. Certain styles don’t work on certain people as every person on this planet has their own set of crowns that actually determines the style they can have. My clients are my walking advert, they are guaranteed a more private personal experience when they come to Passion For Hair they feel comfortable, calm and relaxed while I still maintain the highest professional service and integrity. How long have you been a hairdresser? I have been a hairstylist for 26 years. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing and open your own salon ? It is actually an interesting story. My mother was a client of Siegfried Zepperitz and she asked him if I could come and do an apprenticeship with him. I had no idea what I wanted to do after school. We have strong hairdressers in our family so I thought let’s see if I’ve got the stylist genes. 26 years later and I’m still a very successful stylist in Cape Town and love every minute of what I do. I like to share my knowledge of hairdressing to the world and I open my own salon to train new young hairdressers. What makes a great hairdresser? To me a great hairstylist has to have loads of PASSION and HEART. Also love to work with people and to know products inside and out and the hair’s capability as well as how chemicals react to the hair inside and out and very importantly be truthful to the

50

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

client. How do you deal with difficult clients? I do not think that you get difficult clients. Clients sometimes do not understand hair so I’m always truthful when I do a consultation and explain the process of the chemicals used if they are colouing their hair. There will be no misunderstanding between myself and a client. As I go along I explain the process that will happen to the hair. Clients must understand that hair is a unbelievable canvas but It does have limits, it is only a keratin strand. What is one item that every client should have? I think a brilliant hairstylist after that a good hairdryer. What Shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? It all depends on the hair type. What chemical prosess has been done on the hair, then you can recommend for colour, highlighted or natural hair also taking into consideration the hair structure. I work with L’Oreal Professional, Goldwell also Wella and Paul Mitchell. So a recommendation would be different from client to client. Hair type, to hair condition. What styling products do you suggest? It depends on the style the client has to maintain at home. At the moment soft natural movement is encouraged, with a curl booster to style from wet. A shine serum to keep the curls soft, and give shine. How has the hair industry changed since you started? Wow just look at the 90’s hairstyles. Every single person wanted a Diana cut. Today in modern hairdressing every client gets their own custom look that is tailored to their lifestyle and personality. So we can draw inspiration from the 1920 till 2000 combining different decades with each other. So your choices are unlimited to styles you can create. The chemical process is also much gentler and softer on the hair shaft. Companies cater for brilliant hair condition. Name a few hair tips that you swear by. I just love when applying serum to my long hairstyles to twist it between my index and my thumb to smooth the hair shaft down for incredible shine to create volume in the root area. I blow-dry against the hairs natural growth then back over for exceptional root lift. Then cool the root with the cool shot setting on the hairdryer. That little blue button that everyone thinks is broken, just hold it in, the air will go cool immediately. Name the products you can’t live without…

I just love my… Joico — K-Pak 4 step treatment for the best hair strengthening treatment L’oreal — Liss control smooth control gelcream for perfectly smooth blow dry’s Paul Mitchell — Super skinny serum for shine on long length hair Goldwell — Spunshine for incredible shine on coarse hair Reference — Rough wax 505 For rough texture Have any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry? It is very important to choose a salon that has a fully booked appointment schedule. That is the salon where you want to do your apprenticeship. Work with the busiest stylist and work hard and don’t be scared to ask a lot of questions. The harder you work from the bottom up, the better you will be at your job, the best you will know your staff’s Responsibility’s when you are the boss one day. Make sure you can do all of the work in your salon so you can delegate optimally. Know the job can be done it builds a strong character. What is the favourite perk of your job? Best perk is creating confidence. A happy client just walks so much taller. I can create priceless Happiness. What is the best style you have ever done? All my styles are custom made for every single client, so that is a difficult question. I have taken part in the L’oreal Colour Trophy and was in three regional finals. Competed in one L’Oreal Final top 10 South Africa. I was quite proud of that hairstyles and colour techniques, I love doing colour, it is limitless, if you can dream it, you can do it. I also loved taking part in the colour zoom Goldwell Competitions being creative with my Elumen colours. Do you use social media for your salon? I do not use social media. I am fortunate to be fully booked for the next year in advanced. My clients are all the advertising I needed in the past 26 years. What styles can we look forward to for winter? Winter 2016 we will be seeing… • Soft textured heavy brow length natural fringes. • Tousled natural curls throughout your lengths. • Short soft crop cuts with low partings to the side. • Beautiful contoured cuts, all one length long bobs, no Layers. Bringing out the facial features, straight parting right down the centre. • The beautifully classical high pony.

Tanya from Cape Town asks... How can I remove the yellowing from my blonde hair? Michelle says... What I like to suggest to my clients is using a silver shampoo when needed as this will assist in neutralising unwanted yellow or brassy tones — my favourite one being the LANZA silver brightening shampoo. The reason I love this one so much is that most silver shampoos can dry the hair out however this one is the only silver shampoo that I have ever come across that is Sulphate and Chloride free making it very gentle on the hair.

Nicole from London asks... Does using expensive shampoo make a difference? Michelle says... Most definitely. I can not stress this enough. The reason that professional shampoos are so much more expensive is due to the amount of active ingredients to the ratio of water content in the shampoo. This is why a professional brand will last you that much longer due to the fact that it is very rich therefore using less. When you work out the price per application and the time it takes to finish the bottle you will be pleasantly surprised that it is not that much more expensive. So invest in yourself you are worth it. Yes you guessed it, one of my favorite brand of professional shampoos is L’Oreal and of course, Schwarzkopf.

Our expert Michelle Stanton From Veaudry answers YOUR questions. Terry from Kempton Park asks... How do I prevent my red hair colour from fading too fast? Michelle says... Firstly the colour application of the red needs to be done by a professional stylist who understands the undertones of colour and how to pre-pigment the hair as to ensure a perfect vibrant red result that lasts. What I like to recommend to my customers is firstly making sure that they use a sulphate free shampoo specific to looking after colour treated hair and should the client like to use hairspray I always recommend a professional brand that does not contain large amounts of alchohol (typically supermarket brands) that can strip the colour, especially red tones.

STEAL STYLE By Angela Bekiaris

It’s true, blondes do have more fun — just look at Khloé Kardashian.

S

he’s gorgeous, she’s fit and she’s becoming one of the most successful of the Kardashian sisters. Khloé Kardashian and her new blonde locks, toned physique and bubbly personality is everything a man could want and a woman aspires to be — and she’s doing a pretty good job grabbing everyone’s attention. We steal some of her secrets.

Beauty Tips

On Diet & Fitness

Khloé has never been skinny — and probably never will be either. But that’s why we love her. She’s worked hard over the last year, and is clearly in the best shape of her life. Her drastic weight reduction, say sources, can be attributed to her personal chef, who prepares low fat diets for the star. And as for her toned body, personal trainer Gunnar Peterson gets most of the credit. Khloé does cardiovascular exercises, circuit exercises and Pilates. Her and Gunnar also enjoy boxing sessions together, with the star revealing that she trains every day of the week. According to Khloé, she never overdoes any workout to the extent of killing herself, and maintains a balance. "Khloé's a full-on animal in the gym," reveals Gunnar, who adds there is "no complaining, no b*tching, no kvetching. The changes she's made [to her body] are incredible. She's done it the right way. Nothing fast, just hard work. Her body is bangin' right now.” The star does however get laser treatments to zap the cellulite off her butt and thighs, but said the rest of her body is all-natural, not due to plastic surgery. And when it comes to diet, Khloé says she eats everything in moderation, however does follow a dairy-free diet. "I used to not watch what I ate," she admits. "So I started dieting a little. I don't eat dairy anymore, or I try not to, because I'm addicted to cheese!” And when it comes to socialising, she reveals that she still drinks alcohol, saying it brings her sanity.

56

CELEB STYLES | March / April 2016 |

Her skin is flawless and glowing — but that doesn’t come easy, says the reality star. The 31-year-old recently posted her nightly skincare routine on her website, writing, “All the makeup in the world won’t make a difference without great skincare! Right now, I’m so into face oils — I really lube it up at night and wake up with glowing, gorgeous skin. Peep the rest of the products I use in my nighttime routine!” Some of her favourite products to use at night include MAC wipes — “after removing my makeup, I wash my face with this. Hands-down the BEST cleanser for breakouts,” she says. She’s also a fan of Bliss Multi-Face-Eted All-In-One Anti-Ageing Clay mask, saying “Just 7 minutes a week in this mask will do your face YEARS of good!” And while her list of favourite products is quite long, when it comes to make-up the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star says, “I love doing my makeup — mostly because I’m pretty good at it. What I can’t do is hair! [Laughs] So I like to have that done.” Khloé also reveals that she washes her face with two different cleansers every night, and puts baby oil or coconut oil on to take off her make-up. And sources reveal that Khloé turns to mom Kris Jenner for inspiration in the beauty department. “She was great with teaching us beauty and skin care stuff,” she says, adding “I think this is kind of a traditional one that everyone tells their kids, but she always told us to never go sleep with makeup on. And to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.” But her mom isn’t the only one dispensing beauty advice — Khloé has her own beauty tip. “I put sunscreen in all of my cars and I make sure to apply sunscreen every time I’m driving because your hands are on the steering wheel and they’re constantly in the sun. You don’t realize how much your hands are going to age.”

Hair Secrets

Her new blonde lob is driving people insane —because it’s oh-so-so GORGEOUS, that is. While we all loved her with her ombre style, we have to say this is our favourite Khloé Kardashian look ever! But when it comes to hair, the star admits she always has a helping hand — and is quite fussy, too. “I’m like a connoisseur of dry shampoo, so I’m really picky,” adding “I love our Take 2 Dry Conditioner — that’s why we made it. It smells really fresh and good. It’s different from a dry shampoo — it’s good when you have bigger, frizzier hair because it adds a sheen to it even though it’s not as heavy as an oil.” The star recently cut her signature long and wavy locks into a chic bob, just in time to launch TV show Kocktails With Khloe. And she styles it in three different ways — undone waves, sleek and straight and in a half top knot.

Fashion Inspiration She’s looking trendier than ever these days —and she’s definitely giving big sister Kim some serious competition. When it comes to fashion, Khloé seems to have it down to a tee these days. And while she’s got stylists on hand, Khloé admits that her sisters are her inspiration. “I take a lot of inspiration from my sisters,” Khloé reveals, adding “I think that Kim is a major style influencer not only for me, but to the world. I definitely put my own twist on things and bring out my own personality, but she does a lot of things that inspire me. I look to Kylie, too. Kourtney is more boho, a little more casual and that’s just not my style. I think that how each of them puts things together is really inspiring.” | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

collection of statement hairstyles over the years, including corn rows and a mohawk, has his own underwear line, and is the face of numerous high profile brands. His wife, Victoria, went from Posh to a sought-after designer who nailed her signature style and today sets runway trends word-wide. It’s no wonder when it comes to chic the apple didn’t fall far from the tree for Britain’s most illustrious power couple. Their sons Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 14, and Cruz, 11, have also joined the iconic circle of style.

CRUZ H

is parents chose to name him Cruz because it means ‘cross’ in Spanish and he was born in Madrid, Spain. A real dare-devil at heart, Cruz has grown into a tween who isn’t as into the world of fashion as much as his brothers are. Instead of red carpet dos and suite fittings, he loves nothing more than hitting some ramps on his scooter at the local skate park and playing

football for Arsenal’s academy. Football is where Cruz shines the most and if soccer critics’ have it right, he’s bound to play professionally one day. “Out of my three boys Cruz loves soccer the most. He plays at school, he plays at home; he plays it in the house, which Victoria doesn’t really like at times,” says David. “I would love for Cruz to play football professionally when he grows up, but only if it made him happy.”

ROMEO

ust the other day Romeo turned around to his dad and said he didn’t want to play football anymore.”Part of me was devastated but part of me was relieved, too,” says David. “He’s got other passions and I like that.” And his passion is for... fashion. Earlier this year Romeo and his dad were voted among Britain’s top 10 best dressed men. David rocketed from number 46 in 2015 to the fourth spot this year while Romeo came in at number eight, beating the likes of actor Benedict Cumberbatch and model David Gandy (who landed ninth and tenth place). While many would argue Romeo was born with a stylish spoon in his mouth, truth is he only really

‘earned’ his style stripes after landing a role in Burberry’s Christmas advert for 2014. He is today a sought after model, currently showcasing clothes for the British luxury fashion house. “He has a real opinion (when it comes to fashion), and so he is involved in what he was wearing,” says Burberry boss Christopher Bailey. Building on 2014’s dance-filled From London With Love holiday film, Bailey and his Burberry team christened the new season with a tribute to the classic and beloved film, Billy Elliot, with the soccer stud and fashion mogul’s son in the main role, joined by the likes of Sir Elton John, James Corden, Naomi Campbell and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

"Brooklyn, has this wild style going on with his hair at the moment and I kind of wish I had his hair. It's very cool." — David

BROOKLYN B rooklyn has come a long way in creating his own identity from the first snaps we saw of him as a tot wearing a Manchester United football kit to match daddy’s at the team’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. Today — 16 years later — the teen heart-throb has made a name for himself with more than five million followers clicking on his social media accounts wanting regular updates on his life (but his parents say that they still check every word before he post them!). A model and aspiring photographer, Brooklyn doesn’t share David’s intense love of soccer and instead of playing footie 24/7 he left the training academy for Arsenal’s Under-18 team and signed up with a top modelling agency. He’s already appeared on the covers

of both Miss Vogue and Rollacoaster and shot a campaign for the Polish clothing brand Reserved. He also recently appeared in the music video ‘Wake Up’ by The Vamps, a boy band comprising of four British youths. “It appears he has a lot of potential for a career in the modelling industry,” says a source close to Brooklyn. “He is incredibly photogenic and has the handsome looks to be considered for some high-profile, big-money work.” Brooklyn’s dream career is, however, not infront of the lens, but behind it. “He actually loves photography,” says David. “That is one of his greatest passions. I have always said to my children, as long as they have a passion for something, we will encourage it. I know he’ll be great at any career he chooses.”

BRAIDS When it comes to man braids anything goes from plaits to intricate French and Waterfall braids, zigzag braids, snake

patterns, intersecting cornrows, shaping geometric figures, swirls and curvy lines. The possibilities are endless! | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

W

hen Oscarwinning actor and renowned musician Jared Leto arrived at the Golden Globes last year wearing his hair in a braid down his back fans were in two minds over the new look. The question on everyone's lips? Are man braids the new buns for 2016? Is this trend cool or downright silly? And, most of all, can any Tom, Dick and Harry pull it off — or do you need to be super hot, like Jared (who you'll agree would look gorgeous even if he had no hair!)? Sure, men of colour have been rocking cornrows for years so that's not something new, but the last few months have seen white guys picking up on the trend. There's even an Instagram account — under the hashtag #manbraid — specifically dedicated to showcasing men and their braids. This year it seems the trend of wearing the top part of the hair in braids while the sides remain shaven being a massive hit. Although the look is yet to infiltrate the South African market, with a handful of local hair salons dissing the braid, it has caught on like wild fire among the international market, especially Asia, Europe and America. While it remains to be seen whether the trend will reach the height of the man bun, a number of celebrities have already been spotted embracing the braid. Bored with man buns and ponytails, men are now getting more creative by growing out their locks and braiding them in weird and wonderful styles. Take One Direction member

Harry Styles, 21, who was seen rocking a man braid-man bun hybrid on Instagram to Dancing with the Stars pro Derek Hough, 30, who is also often spotted wearing a man braid, for example. Then, of course, there's soccer star David Beckham, NBA star Richard Hamilton and F1 champ Lewis Hamilton who often braid their hair. The younger generation have also cottoned on to this trend. 16-year-old Brooklyn Beckham posted a pic of a Mohawk style braid just the other day on social media. Trend setting aside, braids are often a 'practical solution' to tame unruly manes and are the best protective hairstyles, that both allow hair to grow out safely and also create stylish and unique looks. Braids are great for tight curls (think Justin Timberlake). Just braid away and you can forget about styling routines for a while, apart from regular washing and conditioning. Modern braided hairstyles also don't reveal baby hair along the line of hair growth. "Man braids are a great way to add texture and are a unique variation from the usual safer hair trends," says acclaimed hair stylist Aditi Vyas. “It can be made to look very masculine when executed well. Thanks to social media, the trend is already catching up in India. At our salon, we’ve been working on a lot of man braids these days. Men should stick to a single structured braid. This can be textured when working with waves or curls and can be sleeker when working with straight hair. Men with short

sides and length on top can braid the top and insert the end of the braid in the braid itself to give a formal yet cool look. Use a gel to add some natural shine whilst holding the braid together even for slightly shorter hair. Finish with a hair spray for extra hold." Thirsty Roots, a hair styling and hair care website, says cornrows are still the most popular braids for men. "There are plenty of men braids hairstyles but cornrows are the oldest of the hair braiding form. When you mention braided hairstyles people think immediately of women, but a lot of men rock braids too. Men braids are often worn to make a statement. When you see someone with braids in their hair and the various geometric shapes that the cornrows are usually designed in it often makes you take a second look. Men with long healthy hair have an array of braiding options to choose from. Options like long skinny plats that look like little pig tails or athletic styled braids that are very similar to cornrow designs and are made for those men who may have a very active and fast pace life. Before you decide to run out and get the latest and most eye dropping braiding style find out if your hair is up to the stress. Braids that are worn for weeks at a time can give your head and your hair undesirable tension and irritation. Before braiding your hair you want to make sure it’s healthy and properly moisturized. To keep frizz down wrap your head before you get into bed. The style will last longer and remain fresh this way."

Get The Look At Home

Internationally acclaimed hair stylist Kevin Fortune (whose famous clients include Alexa Chung, Kelly Osbourne, La Roux, Nick Gimshaw and Steve Jones) provides these six tips on how to achieve this look at home. All you need are a few products and oodles of patience! • Prepping Hair: Slightly dampen hair before using a couple of hair-care products to smooth and nourish hair. Kevin first uses a small amount of protein cream all over the hair and Argan oil just at the ends to make hair more easily manageable and avoid too many fine fly-away hairs when plaiting. • Blow Drying Hair: Always use heat-protection spray when blow-drying. A light

spritz all over the hair will make sure hair is protected. Blow-dry on a low heat to help seal the products into the hair. • Plaits: It is important that the look is modern and not too feminine so Kevin advises you create a side-parting to emphasise the masculinity of the style. Make sure to keep plaits loose and not too tight, or it will look too much like a traditional corn-row style, which not everyone can pull off. • Centre Quiff: Have one plait run along the side, while a second corn-row is plaited slightly off centre at the top of the head to create a slight Mohawk effect. The key here is to find a parting that really complements your face. It’s a good idea to start from

where you normally wear your parting. It goes without saying that centre parting is a big nono here. • Tightening: When plaiting the hair towards the back of the neck make sure your stylists pulls the hair quite tight around the sides of your face. It’s all about the slight quiffeffect at the top and you don’t want it to end up looking bulky on the sides. You can then decide whether you would like the two plaits to fall naturally, or secure them by simply using a few pins to hold the braids in place. • Finishing The Style: To ‘finish’ the style, just look in the mirror and gently run your hands over the sides of your head to make sure that final look is not too neat and tidy. | March / April 2016 | CELEB STYLES

It’s a topic that never fails to fascinate — can one really stop ageing?

F

or centuries scientists have tried to find ways to stop time in its tracks. They've come up with all sorts of theories, products and solutions yet people are still growing old. The truth is, we cannot escape the inevitable — we cannot stay forever young. Fortunately there are a few ways of slowing down the process. We take a look at five researched and scientifically proven methods to fight ageing that aren't nearly as pricey as going under the knife. Wink Wink: Sleep has been proven to keep the mind and body healthy. Doctors recommend at least eight to nine hours of sleep a night to keep skin youthful. Many have claimed by sticking to a proper 'sleeping regime', one will end up looking 10 years young than your real age in the next five years. Instead of sleeping face down on your pillow, which causes wrinkles, sleep on your back instead.

TURN B

CLO

Down To The Ingredients: While there are a number of crèmes and serums on the market promising to iron out wrinkles, choose products that are proven to deliver results such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Fruit Acids), Triple Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Synergistic effect), Vitamin A and Beta Hydroxy Acids. Research has confirmed that our skin’s ability to absorb active ingredients from skin care products is greatest at night. This makes bed time the best time to nourish your skin with anti ageing properties.

Drink It: We all know water is vital for life but did you know that water can dramatically improve the condition of your skin? Skin that is dehydrated is more prone to wrinkles so plump them up by drinking six glasses of water a day. If water isn't your thing, swop a few glasses for green tea, which has been widely used in the Far East for centuries because of its potential health-giving benefits and is today the 'it' drink for anti-ageing.

Get Your Fill: Certain foods have been dubbed powerhouses in the fight against ageing. Eating more raw fruit and veggies and sticking to a diet that is meat-free (or limited) can help you age more gracefully. Best for softening skin? Pomegranates. Best for smoothing fine lines? Blueberries. Best for firming? Kale and Spinach. Best for a dewy complexion? Watermelon. Best for a healthy glow? Olive Oil. Taking a daily supplement of vitamins especially E and C and antioxidants tablets can help a lot in creating that healthy and younger looking skin. Sun Block: Above everything, dermatologists agree the best way to protect your skin against ageing, especially in South Africa, is to wear a good SPF all year round. Whether you're frolicking on the beach, rubbing shoulders on the red carpet, or just playing with your kids in the park, you're continually pummelled by invisible rays that can cause your skin to darken and burn, damaging DNA in your skin cells and causing genetic mutations that can lead to skin cancer. Adding sunscreen to your daily beauty regime will dramatically help stop wrinkles and protect you against skin cancer. Although essential, sunscreen is not an endall solution and health organisations strongly recommend also using a hat and sunglasses, clothing and shade to protect your skin.

BACK THE

OCK Did You Know?

‘The Fountain of Youth’ is not just a saying, there is actually a fountain said to be brimming with magical qualities to keep you young. Located in St Augustine, the oldest city in the United States, this fountain has become a major tourist attraction. It was discovered many moons ago by Ponce de Leon soon after he arrived in what is now Florida in 1513. He believed the fountain could restore the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in its waters. Although it’s visited daily by many, it’s accepted that the story is just legend.
