wen Stefani is known as a successful singer, songwriter, fashion designer and actress, but she’s now getting people talking — and painting — with her new nail collection. We caught up Carley Oosthuizen, Product Manager at Twincare International, who told us about the Gwen Stefani Holiday Collection, and how important she thinks it is to have your nails done. Tell us a bit about the new nail collection, Gwen Stefani Holiday Collection? The collection is all about winter shades that appear in this year runway collection, yet adding a bit of sparkle. There are some glitter lacquers that Gwen brought into the

collection as she is very focused on nail art. What inspired you to do it? Keeping ahead of the trends — OPI is known to be trendsetters not followers. Do you have a say in the shades? If yes, what is the process when choosing them? Yes I do. We identify the needs and wants in our SA market and by doing this we know what shades to bring in, however we also bring in one or two new shades to use to test the waters. It allow us to be current with trends and creates excitement in our consumers. Have you always been a woman who regularly has her nails done? Definitely, I come from a household of women that are very passionate about the beauty industry. As a little girl I used to paint

my nails and flaunt the different shades on each of my nails — Yes I thought I was a beauty queen. Have you ever left home for a big event with unpolished nails? NEVER, if I have to last minute I make someone drive so I can sit in the car and paint my nails. I must say I think I have mastered it quite well. My motto is 'you are never fully dressed without having your mani and pedi’. Are you adventurous when it comes to colours and nail art on your own nails?

More Fabulous Colours On Page 20
Absolutely, I always have to have some bling on my nails, I am a little obsessed with glitter. I love the idea of uniqueness and through this one can create their own style. In your opinion, how important are manicures and pedicures? Extremely! People don’t realise that as much as it is important to look after your skin you need to treat your nails in the same fashion. Is Gwen Stefani one of your style icons? Yes of course, for always being fashion forward.
“I’ve always loved beauty. I was the girl who was like, ‘Ask your mom if we can play with clothes or makeup.’ . . . And you know what? I’m doing the same thing now that I was doing when I was 10.” — Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani: A Woman Of Many Talents Not only has she been successful with band No Doubt and as a solo artist, but she launched clothing line L.A.M.B in 2004 too — the line takes influence from a variety of fashions, including Guatemalan, Japanese and Jamaican styles, and is very popular amongst Hollywood stars including Teri Hatcher and Nicole Kidman. In late 2006, Stefani released a limited edition line of dolls called Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Fashion dolls, inspired by the various costumes that Stefani and the Harajuku Girls wore while touring for the album. (In 2014 Stefani announced she is producing an animated series about her and the Harajuku Girls.) In late summer 2007, Stefani launched a perfume, L, as a part of her L.A.M.B. collection of clothing and accessories. In September 2008, Stefani released a fragrance line as a part of her Harajuku Lovers product line, and as of January 2011, Stefani became the spokesperson for L’Oreal Paris. And of course the star did a great job as a mentor on popular reality show The Voice USA last year. | July / August 2015 | CELEB STYLES

Age-Appropriate
HAIRSTYLES The best hairstyles for your age!
S
hould women be shortening their hair with every passing birthday? While many feel that long hair is for youngsters only, stars like Demi Moore and Jennifer Aniston have proven that long hair looks great over 40 and that the idea of it being short is outdated. But while we’re not saying you have
to sport a specific look at a specific age, we are sharing the looks most popular — and considered most age-appropriate — at different stages of your life. And they’re not just popular, they’re flattering too — exactly what you need as the years go by. So see how you should be enjoying your tresses as the years go by…
In Your Teens
Being a teenager has many advantages — Apart from having no real responsibilities, you also have the freedom to express yourself — and your appearance — any way you want. Well, if your parents approve, that is. Most teen girls are known for their long hair, naturally flowing or in a cute pony tail. Natural colour, no strange cuts and just the innocence that comes with going from teen to woman. Stars like Dakota Fanning, Sasha Pieterse and Chloe Grace Moritz are getting it right — natural, beautiful and full of life.

Selena Gomez
In Your 20s
This seems to be the time most girls start to experiment — cutting in some layers, adding some highlights. Maybe even cutting a fringe. Just don’t go to extremes — you don’t want unhealthy, broken hair by the time you’re 30. Look at stars like Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande for motivation. They still have their innocence, in a more sophisticated kind of way — no more school girl look, but not conservative either. All rights Reserved. In Your 30s
From Fergie’s luscious locks, to Reese Witherspoon’s more sophisticated style, being in your 30s allows you to play a little. Large waves, soft curls and face-framing sides with a lot of feathery texture is popular. It’s a stage in a woman’s life when not just her hair, but her life is settled, comfortable and confident. The Lob seems to be popular for a woman in her 30s too — it’s not too short, and can look very sexy on a new mom who doesn’t have time to care for long locks every morning. And some bangs are great at this stage too. Be a little daring now that you can, but remember you’re not a teen either so don’t over do it.
Fergie
Hall e Berry In Your 40s
10
By your 40s you’re probably calming down with the different colours and cuts — it’s time to find something that works and stick to it. Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry are examples of stars who have found a cut which suits them and stuck with it. Why change something flattering, right? And while your hair is just as important in your 40s as it was in your 20s, you are probably spending more time focused on health and fitness these days… which in turn means your hair is probably in the best condition ever — remember, what goes in reflects on the outside too. Michelle Pfeiffer
Jane Fonda
Over 60
In Your 50s
Most women have started cutting their hair into a bob by now — not because it’s what’s expected, but because it suits a woman at that age. Jodie Foster is a great example. However, with that said, many ladies are still sporting longer locks in the 50s and loving it. Demi Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer not just do long hair justice, but prove that it can make you look younger too — and let’s face it, these ladies don’t even look a day over 40! Our hair does not only change its colour with age, but also its texture and can become more wiry, dry and hard to control over the years, which means casual long locks are not easy to achieve anymore. Do what works for you.
Looking at A-listers like Jane Fonda, 77, Helen Mirren, 70, and Meryl Streep, 66, is inspiring enough to know you can always have a fabulous hairstyle, no matter the age. These women give sophisticated and sexy another meaning — and while they have the features and bodies to help, their hair ‘dos are getting heads turning everywhere they go. So don’t give up on your locks because you’re getting older — take time out to get it styled. After all, you probably have more time now than you ever did before.
Keep Healthy Hair At Every Age
While some cuts suit certain people, one thing is for sure — all cuts, colours and hairstyles need to be done right and looked after. We share some great tips on keeping your hair healthy — at every age! • Keep it groomed: Never let down the maintenance. • Keep it natural: Messy hair might have worked in your younger days, but later on it just looks careless. • Keep it healthy: No matter what age, nothing looks worse that stringy hair without shine. • Keep the lines flowing and soft: Avoid any harsh lines and corners — they will enhance the possible lines in your face. | July / August 2015 | CELEB STYLES

-MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH
Mika’eel Swepersad
From Headmasters Hair Co.
Psst! Julianne Hough
What I Know Now...
M
ika’eel, owner of Headmasters Hair Co., reflects on the lessons that have carried him through the years. He also shares his expertise knowledge on opening a successful salon.
When did you start? 2002 What made you go on your own? I had reached a point in my career where I wanted to be responsible for choosing products etc, that would be used on my clients. I wanted to make the decisions. How much did it cost? I started with the bare minimum and built up as I went along. If you could do one thing differently, what would it be? I would have started doing ethnic hair from day one, as the ethnic market is growing and very fashionable. Toughest decision I’ve ever had to make… was to open my own salon and its hidden challenges. The key to happiness is… surrounding yourself with the people that you love, and don’t stop doing what you love. I know my salon made it when… I won an award in 2006 and found myself on an aeroplane to Vegas, then I really knew that my salon had made it when I won the same award in 2007 and was heading for that destination again. The advice I’m glad I never took? Can’t really say that I’ve ever been given bad advice. What advice do you give young stylists? If you are entering into the industry, do so because it’s your passion, perceiver and everything will follow.

It’s a one-step professional tool that can be mixed into any colour formulation to help re-attach and build bonds that make up the cellular membrane, helping prevent loss of cuticle and cortex cells that support the inner structure of the hair. This breakthrough technology dramatically reduces breakage and helps prevent damage during colouring, improving the overall integrity of the hair, while prolonging colour and vibrancy between appointments. Make sure your colourist is using a bond builder! Why B3? - One easy step system. - No added processing time. - Helps prevents loss of cuticle and cortex cells. - Protects against damage. - Locks in pigment and improves colour maintenance. - Silicone free.

The Skin
Flushed, fresh, dewy skin is taking the place of heavy blushers and bronzers. Think no make-up this winter. Start by moisturising the face, then use a brush or make-up puff to pick up loose powder from the compact and buff small circles all over the face. The powder will then blend evenly into skin. The result is so good that you don’t need foundation or concealer. Finish off with a cream blush to subtly contour the cheeks.

Barbara Palvin TIP: Press lips onto a tissue after application, so the colour stays concentrated on the outer part of the lips.
The Lips
The oldest make-up trend around is still the most popular — the classic red lip. There is a wide range of crimson shades to choose from. Each hue is a modern take on old school Hollywood glamour. When wearing a scarlet lip, always prep the lips beforehand. Use a toothbrush dipped in warm water to scrub away any dead or dry skin before applying colour. This will ensure that you have a smooth canvas. When wearing a red lip, always make sure you have concealed any excess redness or blemishes in your skin, as dark lipstick can exaggerate any redness in your complexion. Shades of plum and especially the colour of the year, marsala, also rules this winter.

Inky Black Eyes is a must! If you don’t already have a black eye marker in your vanity, pick one up and get creative! This is a versatile tool to create all of the trendiest eye looks for winter. It can be used on top of the lashline only, for a retro cat-eye that is clean enough for daytime. For night, it can be used to tight-line all the way around the eye for maximum drama. It can also be kept only to the outer corners of the eyes. Keeping inner corners bright makes eyes look large and open. The trick here is to keep the rest of the face natural.

The grown out lobs of last winter are being replaced with air dried hair parted at the centre. With this style there’s a fine line between messy-looking chic and just plain sloppy. To get this trendy look right, think about your products. Styling creams and texturizing sprays applied to dry lengths add grit and pliable hold. Set hair in a braid or a low chignon for a simple set-it-to-air-dry technique.

One Word: balayage. It’s been around for a while, but this timeless technique is slowly making its way back into being one of the most popular hair colour requests in salons today. Balayage is a French word meaning ‘to sweep’. Its aim is to create sun-kissed natural looking hair colour with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. Not only does balayage create multi-layered colour, it also lets you get away with stretching out salon visits just a little longer. Who knows if those are roots or just a part of the colour?
The Products
Bringing the best in beauty tech into your home is no longer just for celebs. The lure of professional results without having to wait for an appointment (or pay the steep prices at salons or doctor’s offices) is something everyone should invest in to step up their cleansing routines.

Want to know the real secret behind true beauty? Showing you are beautiful inside and out by choosing products that are animal cruelty free!
ooking beautiful shouldn’t be at the expense of creatures big or small. Sadly, even in today’s modern times, animal testing for cosmetics, toiletries and hair care products still happens. Cruelty Free International is the global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics. Established by the BUAV, one of the world’s longest standing and most respected animal protection organisations, Cruelty Free International is head-quartered in London from where an international network of organisations are mobilised in a coordinated campaign. Routinely injected, gassed, force-fed and killed, thousands of animals from rabbits and mice to dogs and cats endure horrific abuse in the name of beauty. The good news is that an increasing number of companies are turning to humane alternatives, so it’s never been easier to find cruelty-free products. Use our top ‘cruelty free’ guide to help you choose some awesome cruelty-free products.

In a moment, hair extensions can transform a woman’s appearance from a Rihanna inspired, red pixie cut, to curly long blonde locks, like Beyoncé. Some women feel that wearing hair extensions could be seen as denying one’s ethnic roots; others merely see it as a fashion accessory much like shoes and jewellery. And just as with jewellery there are many women who see hair as an investment and are willing to spend a fortune on Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian or Cambodian hair. There are also women who dream of human hair extensions but are not able to afford the luxury, however are provided with many options of synthetic hair for which they can pay far less. Over the years the number of women opting to weave their hair has grown significantly. In 2014, Mintel, a market research firm based in the USA, projected that the black hair care industry would be worth $761-million by 2017. The benefits of weaving are endless. Women can straighten, curl, cut and change their weaves without damaging their natural hair. However, it is also im-
portant to let your hair breathe from time to time. Overusing weaves can cost you your hairline, just think of Naomi Campbell. Kevin Hughes, the Creative Design Team Educator for Moroccanoil, says when using extensions, you must be aware that products for maintaining human hair are different to those suitable for synthetic hair. “On human hair extensions, it is important to moisturize and get rid of excess product build-up. I recommend using Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask or Moroccanoil Weightless Hydrating Mask once a week from mid lengths to the ends.” Hughes adds that one of the biggest mistakes, when using synthetic weaves, is using high levels of heat which may cause the fibre to melt. “Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection is ideal to prevent damage to the hair before applying direct heat. Synthetic hair is usually more rigid than human hair, it is important to make sure that the product does not make the hair stiff or inelastic,” says Hughes. At the end of the day it’s not what kind of hair you wear or how much you spend on it that counts, it’s how you maintain it that will have people wondering whether that’s your natural hair or if it’s just another weave.

ARTI S TI C SHAWN ODENDAAL
Artistic 24-year-old Shawn Odendaal shares his drive and passion with us...
H
airdressing is an artistic job, they trim and style and advise their customers on personal grooming and cosmetic aids available. Hairdressers need to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and hairstyles and cutting techniques, just as 24-year-old Shawn Odendaal from Paul James Hairdressing does. This talent is rare to find... we get to know Shawn a little better. When did you start in the industry? My journey in hairdressing started six years ago. What and who made you decide to become a stylist? No one in particular made me want to do hairdressing, I think it’s the passion for it that made me more interested — being different and always wanting the newest hairstyles. I started in school cutting and styling my friend’s hair at home, playing around with the clippers and scissors — it felt comfortable from the start. Do you own your own salon? I began my career at Paul James Hairdressing six years ago working hard and proving myself worthy, and I became the manager of the shop. A few years after that I started buying shares and I’m now a partner in the salon.
What makes a great hairdresser? Someone who understands another person’s need and desire. If someone wants a change give them a change — make them feel like they can take over the world. Give them as much advice and guidance as possible, let them understand and realise that they are beautiful. A great hairdresser is someone who is passionate and who loves what they do no matter where or how they do it, as long as they do it. How did you get into doing such creative styles? As previously mentioned it all started in school cutting spider webs and blocks. Whatever I felt easy with I did, it was only when I became a stylist that I wanted to challenge myself even more by cutting different shapes and designs and taught myself the new techniques of shapes and designs. You must have an artistic background. Did you study or did these creative styles just come naturally? To be honest I’m not really artistic when drawing or painting etc it’s only when I cut shapes and designs where I become creative and artistic, I think it comes naturally. How do you keep up on style trends? By going on seminars and cutting courses as much as
I can. Also getting involved in competition work seeing other stylists work and finding inspiration all over the industry. What is the best styling product to use on men’s hair? For me any styling aid to use is good — you have different styling aids for different types of hair. It’s the way you use it and on what hair type that makes a difference, but my favourite at the moment will be clean cut from Paul Mitchell and matte definer from matrix. Do clients bring in pictures of the cut they want? Most clients do yes and you try getting it as close as possible but you have to be honest if that style will suit your client’s facial shape, or not. What are the latest trends for men? There are a few new hairstyles out which have been around for a while now like the ‘man bun’ or the ‘comb over’ or the ‘pompadour’ hairstyle. We try and change it up a bit with adding new ideas to these haircuts. What is your advice for someone wanting to start in the industry? It’s not an easy journey. At first you have to start at the bottom and work your way up with a positive attitude and always be willing to help and learn no matter how much you know.

With a gents hair do not take it up too high — when cutting with the clippers leave Name a enough hair to blend it without taking it up too high. n Always ask your gents if they few hair want to trim their eyebrows. n Always clean your gents ear hairs — they are too shy to tips you ask but will appreciate it and become a loyal client. n Clean the neck hair as far down swear by? as possible. n Use small clippers around the ears. n Do not over think a gents haircut its easier than it looks. n When a gent has straight hair rather point cut the hair instead of straight so that you don’t get lines in the hair. YOUR QUESTIONS
ANSWERED... Fiona from Sandon asks… I pay an absolute fortune to have my colour done every month. I have long hair and it can take up to four hours to have my colour done. Do you have any advice on how I can make my colour last longer?
Tracy from Cape Town asks… I’m 23 years old and I adore Kelly Osbourne’s purple hair. I’m currently a blonde with a bob, will the colour damage my hair and how many times will I have to go to the salon to get her colour? Veaudry experts say… There are many ways to approach this. First of all the best advice we can give is with a proper consultation in the salon so that we can see exactly what your hair needs, and how to get you your desired result. If your colour is light enough then I would use a crazy colour on your hair to give you that pastel effect, and then either a colour mouse or shampoo to maintain the colour. Keep in mind the desired colour (Kelly Osbourne’s purple hair) will last as long as the condition of your hair is good.
Our experts Leandi Botes and Mandy Gates, from Veaudry International answer YOUR questions.
Fred from Benoni asks… I am only 23 years old and I’m going bald! SCREAM!!! Is there anything I can do to slow this down? Please I’m desperate! Veaudry experts say… Unfortunately hair loss is genetic and can be as a result of many factors. Consult your doctor to do a blood test to check your thyroid and iron levels. Also how long has your hair been falling out? There are many products available that guarantee a visible result for example; Kerastase Densifique which is a three-month course that guarantees a 33% or 1 800 additional hairs to what you originally had. Or there is D.S Laboratories, which is a long-term intense course, which guarantees you all the hair you have lost over the last four to eight years. Lastly of course there are hair implants as an option. In the end all of these options mean a long-term process and can get quite costly but seeing the end result makes it all worth it.

Veaudry experts say… Firstly you did not state what type of colour you do, but with that being said there are maintenance cheats. The most common problem is that people wait far too long to have their colour done. Point being this will work out less costly to do colour on a 1cm regrowth as opposed to a 5cm regrowth. If you do highlights you don’t have to do a full or half-head every time as this compromises the condition of your hair. Ask your stylist about a ‘T-panel’ or six foils for ‘window dressing’ this will see you through. You can also alternate this method with your half-head highlights or full-head highlights, and we always recommend the use of professional home care products, to maintain the colour and condition of your hair.
Euginia from Bloemfontein asks… I’m a black lady and would kill for an all-natural relaxer product. What would you advise I use? Veaudry experts say… We would definitely recommend a Brazillian Blow Wave. It’s safe and undamaging to your hair, it will also leave you with an all healthy look without changing your hair structure.

A LOST
CAUSE? Over 50 percent of male and female salon clients are concerned with hair loss. If you’re one of them, this article is for you!
A
fter the arrival of daughter Harper, Victoria Beckham’s hair was at an all time loss. Within weeks of giving birth her locks had fallen out in clumps. Despite trying various hair loss remedies and supplements, the queen of posh was forced to go short. While Vic’s hair has fortunately grown back healthy and strong, many women across the globe are forced to suffer the effects of hair loss. While some cases of hair loss are normal (healthy heads lose around 100 hairs a day), there are various reasons why hair falls out. We count down 20 of the most common and get expert advice on how to reverse the damage.

Almost one in 10 women aged 20 through 49 suffer from anaemia due to a lack of iron, which in turn can cause hair loss. Ask your doctor for a full blood screen to rule out any deficiencies and if needed start taking a simple iron supplement. Your hair should grow back once your iron levels are normal again.
3
2
Diet is very important for hair growth. Eat your green leafy vegetables and chicken and red meats for iron intake. Very active people tend to lack zinc from sweating during exercise. Food high in zinc like lamb, turkey and pumpkin seeds are recommended. Good old Vitamin D (sun) is great for the blood circulation – that’s why our hair grows faster in summer! Take a vitamin B complex to add shine and fullness to new hair growing out. Eat eggs and avocados for natural intake.
5
6 7
Physical trauma (such as surgery, a car accident, or a severe illness) can cause temporary hair loss, which can trigger a condition called telogen effluvium, otherwise known as TE. TE affects the hair growth cycle and can cause thinning on the scalp. The effects of the condition are reversible. Hair will start growing back as your body recovers.
4
Anabolic steroids cause hormone imbalances, which can cause hair loss. Ditch the quest for bulk and your hair will love you for it.
Healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp so massage your scalp well when shampooing to loosen the scalp (a tight scalp is one of the causes of hair loss and poor or slow growth). Shampoo with a product that contains caffeine, which stimulates the blood circulation, so when your fine hair grows out it grows back thicker and stronger. Opt for shampoos that are sulphate and paraben-free.
Pregnancy-related hair loss is seen more commonly after your baby has been delivered rather than actually during pregnancy. If you do experience hair loss after your bundle’s arrived, rest assured that your hair will grow back in a couple of months.
Environmental elements like sunlight, climate and pollution can take a toll on your hair and scalp. Try and limit exposure to chlorinated water, minerals and metals as they can also affect your hair. | July / August 2015 | CELEB STYLES

8
Stress can contribute to hair loss. Look at your school, home or work life and see if this is taxing you – perhaps you are re-entering the workforce, dealing with young children, struggling at school or planning a major event. Take a breather and relax.
11
10
If you’re taking medication, pay extra attention to changes in your hair’s texture, as well as hair loss or growth. Drugs that might cause hair loss include methotrexate (used to treat rheumatic conditions and some skin conditions), lithium (for bipolar disorder), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen, and possibly antidepressants.
12
Use high quality hair products to boost new hair growth. We recommend NIOXIN Diaboost Xtrafusion Thickening Treatment with HTX™, which increases the thickness of each existing hair strand for a fuller looking head of hair (in conjunction with any specific Nioxin System). Another product to try is the Davines Energizing range (which is cruelty free).
Lost a few kilos? That explains your hair loss too as sudden weight loss can result in thinning hair. It can take up to six months but your body will ‘realign’ and your hair will start growing back.
14 An underactive thyroid gland affects your hormones, which can contribute to hair loss. Synthetic thyroid medication will take care of the problem.

Condition ends only (never the roots, your own natural oils does that job) with a condition that has a SPF, antioxidants, and heat protectors. Towel-dry and use a protective serum, leave in spray or oil. Some leave-in products create a cold, refreshing, tingling feeling, which means it’s working by stimulating the blood circulation.
13
Overdoing vitamin A-containing supplements or medications can trigger hair loss. Stick to the daily value of 5,000 International Units (IU) per day for adults and kids over age 4; supplements can contain 2,500 to 10,000 IU.
Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins. You may experience clumps of hair falling out, resulting in totally smooth, round hairless patches on the scalp. If you think you may be suffering from the condition, speak to your doctor. While Alopecia areata cannot be cured it can be treated.
16
Cancer treatments can have devastating effects on your hair. Chemotherapy, in particular, can cause complete hair loss. Your doctor can recommend various treatment options to help hair regrow once you’ve finished your cancer treatment course but most often the best treatment is time.
17
18
All of the things women do to manipulate their hair — dyes, chemical treatments, bad brushes, blow dryers, and flat irons — can result in damage and breakage. Be kind to your locks and they’ll be kind to you.
Brushing too much and towel drying aggressively when the hair is wet can cause your hair to fall out. When it comes to hair care, live by the motto of ‘easy does it’.
19
Sometimes hair loss is self-inflicted. Stay away from hairstyles that pull like cornrows, heavy extensions or too-tight braids.
20
Sometimes baldness is hereditary and no amount of TLC will be able to reverse it. If you come from a family where members started to have hair loss at a certain age, then you might be more prone to it. Speak to your doctor about surgery to transplant or graft hair.
This article was compiled with the input of experts Kim Franklin from Carlton Hair Hyde Park (Tel: (011) 646-2420, www.carltonhair.com) and Theresa Gouws, National Education Manager at Modern Hair — distributors of all P&G salon Professional brands (which include Wella Professionals, System Professional, Sebastian Professional, Kadus Professional and Nioxin). | July / August 2015 | CELEB STYLES

un your fingers through your hair right now. Do your locks feel full and thick or does it feel like you’re just a few strands away from sporting a Nicolas Cage do?
A Fine Line Contrary to popular belief, fine hair and thin hair are two different things. “You may have fine hair, which means your individual strands are thinner, but you could still be blessed with lots of it,” says Jessica Ornellas-Brand of easihair pro tape-in extensions. “Therefore fine hair does not mean little hair. Thin hair refers to a decrease in density. Your scalp may be more visible with thinning hair. Most men struggle with a receding hairline and or a bald spot on their crown area. You’ll know you have fine/limp hair if your locks seem lifeless and dull. Fine strands tend to sit flat on your scalp and you tend to have an oily scalp even though you wash it on a daily basis to combat the limpness. Aside from the appearance of thin hair, thin hair poses other challenges when it comes to handling, styling and maintaining. Fine hair is tricky to heat style due to its delicate nature. It can dry out and break very easily. Too much product use can wear the hair down quickly too, this is why experts recommend staying away from oily serums and heavy conditioners.”
Fatten Up
Fortunately, some products can have the opposite effect and create the illusion of volume. “Volumising shampoos and conditioners add humectants to the hair, which are non-oily substances that attract and pull in moisture from the surrounding environment. These humectants help to swell a person’s hair shaft to create the illusion of thicker, fuller hair,” says Jessica. “I have seen and felt the difference in hair once clients switched to products intended for
If you answered the latter, you need some serious plumping up... and fast. If not, fake it until you make it with these ubër awesome thickening hair tricks from our pros!
Wearing Thin
When it comes to the thickness of your hair, the apple doesn’t fall far from the family tree. Research confirms that thick locks are genetic so if your mamma and granny had serious Beyoncè bounce you’ve probably got it to. Aside from genetics, there are, however, other factors that can contribute to thin locks. “Poor diet and stress are a common factor for thinning hair,” says Jessica. “Protein is probably the most important dietary requirement when it comes to hair growth as a strand of hair is composed of mostly protein. At any given time, about 90 percent of your hair is in the growing phase. For each individual hair, this growing phase lasts two to three years. At the end of that time, hairs enter a resting phase that lasts about three months before they are shed and replaced by new hair. If you don’t get enough protein in your diet, a disproportionate number of hairs may go into the resting phase. A typical scalp has about 120 000 to 150 000 strands of hair, and sheds about 50 to 100 strands of them each day. Most people don’t even notice that small amount. But if an unusually large number of hairs enter the resting phase at the same time, thin hair can become noticeable. In addition to diet, other factors that can cause thin hair are some medications (including blood thinners, antidepressants and even birth control pills) and hormonal changes. During pregnancy your hormonal changes can also cause hair to fall out. Some women start losing hair when they start breastfeeding and some seven months after having their baby.” their hair type. If used correctly, they do work. There are also other products you can try. By using the right products you can create the illusion of thicker hair with a weightless shine. Some volumising products are heat activated so styling/blow-drying will become a whole lot easier and rewarding. Combine volumising shampoos and conditions with volumising mousse, leave-in treatments, serums and sprays.”

Expert Tips • Choose chemical-free hair product. Swap shampoo with sulphates for sulphate-free shampoo, replace commercially-manufactured conditioner with naturally made products and avoid hair sprays, gels, and pomades that have ingredients you can’t pronounce. • Handle your hair gently when washing and conditioning. Avoid tugging at it and pat dry instead of rubbing and don’t brush your locks while wet (as they are more susceptible to damage). • Stay away from heavy conditioners. Apply a light one to the mid lengths and ends of your hair only. Rinse the conditioner well and use a root lifting spray before you blow dry. Remember to use a heat protecting spray as your fine hair is delicate. • A good layered cut can help to texturise the hair, creating movement and body. In general a shoulder-length style works well for fine hair. • A lot of women with limp hair choose to colour and highlight their hair as it amplifies it, giving the hair more volume and lift. Faking It Hair extensions, wefts and wigs — like all beauty trends, hair pieces evolve all the time but one thing that never goes out of fashion is thick locks. The queen of hair extensions, actress Kim Kardashian, swears by hairpieces and hair extensions to give her and other Hollywood starlets body at the click of a finger. Kim, along with Christina Milian, Kelly Rowland, Paris Hilton and Ariana Grande are known for wearing clip-in bangs, ponies (that simply clip into the top of your own ponytail), wefts (a section of hair — synthetic or real-that’s sewn together on top) and hair extensions (either glued, taped or micro ringed in place). When choosing extensions, wefts and wigs, the cream of the crop is selecting real hair pieces that are simple, quick and virtually undetectable. If, however, your budget doesn’t allow for human hair, opt for heat-friendly synthetic fibre that feels very much like real, natural hair and can be styled using hot tools. This allows the fibre to not only be treated like human hair, but it is also able to retain the style in the way non heat-friendly synthetic fibre does (even after you wash it).
The Talk On Tape Women with thin hair across the globe have benefitted from hair extensions with salons worldwide following the latest craze of tape-in extensions. “Hairdressers are moving away from bonding to the tape-in method due to the time factor — it takes so quick to install and reapply, there is no damage and they’re reusable,” says Jessica. “I have very fine hair and I have tried clip ins and you can always
see the bump which they create. Clip-ins can also be heavy for fine, thin hair, whereas with the tape-ins, they are completely undetectable and light. You can’t feel you have anything in your hair. Even celebrities like Tracy McGregor are firm ambassadors of easihair pro, rating it the best hair extension system that they have experienced. The extensions are 100% real human hair and all the cuticles are kept intact. The hair is sourced from China. Asian ladies have the thickest denier opposed to Russian hair, for example, which is much thinner. Which means the easihair pro hair has the longest lasting wear.”
Tricks Of The Trade • Receding hairlines can be disguised by wearing the hair more forward or cutting a fringe. • Plump-up hair in a rush by using dry Shampoo. It eliminates the oils on your scalp and gives your hair instant body. • Using a couple of shades darker for light hair creates depth and interest while a shade or two lighter for dark hair looks glossy and groomed. • When it come to wigs, wefts and extensions, human hair is excellent for style versatility as you can curl, wave and crimp the hair to your desired style, while synthetic hair has a ‘memory’ for their wave and curl pattern. This means they hold up in bad weather and won’t droop. • Wefts are versatile and can be used to ‘pump’ volume into specific areas of the hair and create highlights and lowlights.

Get enough protein: It’s a building block for your body to build stronger muscles and makes you feel fuller for longer. 6. Get enough Zzzzs: Sleep helps body and mind and will not only give you more energy but more willpower too.
7. Get a fitness buddy: Be it a friend, colleague or partner, get moving with someone who is serious about getting into shape too — and motivate each other. 8. Weigh yourself: Don't become obsessed with what the scale says, but let it be a platform to guide you and inspire you — especially when you see results. 9. Drink lots of water: Aim to drink your eight glasses of water a day to keep your body hydrated and metabolism going. 10. Take a walk: You don’t have to go running… walking is one of the best ways to stay fit and slim. Go for a walk once a day. 11. Get active after dinner: Walk the dog, head to the park with the family, ride your bike, play with your kids, or crank up the tunes and vacuum the house! 12. Get the family involved: Not only is it great bonding time, but exercising with your partner and kids is a great way to motivate one another and have fun while doing it. 13. Start gardening: Yes, a little work in the garden will have you burning plenty calories — and it’s relaxing too. 14. Eat breakfast: You’ve heard it a million times and that’s because it’s true — it kick starts your metabolism and will help prevent you from making poor food choices throughout the day. 15. Dance like no one is watching: Socialising with friends and letting loose on the dance floor is a great way to stay in shape. And if you’re a homebody, get your tunes playing as you dance it up in the kitchen while whipping up a healthy meal. 16. Order carefully in restaurants: Going out for lunch or dinner is great, but don’t forget your healthy eating habits while there. 17. Police your portions: Keep your portions under control by dishing up on a side plate — and keep the main dishes off the table so you don’t continue to nibble. 18. Chew your food: Slow down when you eat — experts say you should chew each bite for 15 to 20 seconds to create better digestion, reduce bloating and portion size. 19. Stretch all the time: Stretching helps to lengthen muscles and give a lean, tone look to your body. 20. Curb your sweet tooth: Try to stay away from sweet things and opt for fruit instead when you need a sweet fix. 21. Get great music on your iPod: Music not

only gets you in the mood to exercise but makes you work harder, say experts. 22. Kiss cocktail hour goodbye: Cocktails — and alcohol in general — is filled with sugar and calories. If you’re trying to stay healthy, skip those drinks. 23. Up your exercise: If you’re not seeing results, mix it up a bit and get more in daily. 24. Fuel for fitness: Eat food that will help keep you going strong. 25. Stop comparing to others: Everyone’s body is different — work towards your own realistic goals and give your body time to get there. 26. Slim up your snack: When you’ve got the nibbles, enjoy healthy snacks like carrots and hummus, apple slices and peanut butter, or a handful of unsalted nuts. 27. Have healthy fast food: If everyone’s ordering in, choose the healthiest option — a grilled chicken salad for example. 28. Choose activities you like: Be it dancing, walking, gardening, yoga, cycling, playing basketball, choose an activity that fits your self-identity. 29. Take lunch on the move: Stop throwing a sandwich down your throat at your desk. Take a walk and enjoy a healthy lunch outside with some fresh air. 30. Take the stairs: If you do this everyday, you’ll be surprised how many calories you’ll burn and how toned you’ll get. 31. Park far from the entrance: When out shopping, choose a parking spot which forces you to walk a little. 32. Sign up for a class: Gym isn’t for everyone — enjoy a small class doing Pilates or yoga, where all the women feel the same as you. 33. Pack your gym bag and lunch the night before: No time to turn to junk when you’re hungry, or get distracted by going home to change. 34. Make an appointment: Book a specific time in your diary for exercise. 35. Reward yourself: Seeing results? Great… have a small treat.
Must-Have Supplements W
ith more than 15 years experience within the fitness, health and nutritional field, Andrea Papas has successfully coached individuals and athletes in achieving their fitness, physique and health goals. Andrea, who is a Certified Holistic Health and Fitness Consultant through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) & The Body Mind Institute, tells us which supplements we should be taking and why!
“At most, supplements provide a five percent boost in your results. The clue is in the name — they’re there to ‘supplement’ an already solid an balanced diet,” he says adding “Supplements have a few different roles to play — its all based upon our health and fitness goals. Due to climate we live in, budget, or availability of foods and poor soil quality we may all be lacking slightly in certain vitamins and minerals, hence, a supplement can help and replenish what we are lacking.”

Creatine Creatine is an amino acid that is produced naturally in your body. It increases in phosphocreatine stores, rapid increase in ATP cellular energy production, and improved anaerobic performance — you’ll see that creatine supplementation can offer indirect benefits to runners, cyclists, and triathletes, and helps take their training to the next level. It’s your muscles’ main fuel source for explosive contractions, and high-intensity work that lasts anywhere from 10-15 seconds — i.e. lifting heavy weights!
Multivitamin It’s essential to take a quality multivitamin/multi-mineral formula to help ensure the presence of those essential nutrients necessary for optimal health and assisting in thousands of metabolic reactions within the body. Athletes and people that lead active lifestyles need even more nutrients than the average non-active person.
Probiotics Research has shown that probiotics assist and increase the immune system by preventing colds and flu while speeding up recovery and preventing diseases like irritable bowel, allergies and diarrhea.
Digestive Enzymes Digestive Enzymes act as catalysts, enabling metabolic processes to occur at lightning speed, they also break down the macronutrients-protein, carbs, and fat.
Omega 3 Fish Oils Fish oils are full of omega-3 — an essential polyunsaturated fat that the body cannot produce and that’s long been linked with lowering rates of cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers, as well as reducing inflammation and aiding in recovery. If you’re training hard on a regular basis (and let’s face it, if you’re reading this, then you probably are!) fish oils are great for reducing joint pain too. Vitamin D3 Often gets overlooked, but given that well over half of the population are deficient in this crucial nutrient, and often classified as a hormone I think it qualifies as a must.
66
Magnesium Magnesium is a very important mineral — it plays a number of roles in the body, being required for more than 325 enzymatic reactions, including those involved in the synthesis of fat, protein and nucleic acids, neurological activity, muscular contraction and relaxation. It’s vital for proper bone metabolism, vitamin D metabolism, parathyroid function, insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance as well as proper blood lipid levels and prevention of atherosclerosis, not to mention cardiovascular disease. It even helps you relax out after a stressful day, giving you a calming affect. CELEB STYLES | July / August 2015 |
Vitamin K2 It’s important to remember that if you’re taking a high dose vitamin D supplement, you also need to take Vitamin K2. The biological role of vitamin K2 is to help move calcium into the proper areas in your body, such as your bones and teeth. It also helps remove calcium from areas where it shouldn’t be, such as in your arteries and soft tissues.

Dear CS, I’m an African woman and would love to have my hair down to my waist without using extensions. Is this possible? And how do I go about getting natural, waist-length hair. Pearl from Sandton Dear Pearl, I’m afraid the length of which your hair will grow is determined genetically. Waist-length hair would require at least six years of growth. To help you get started you must regularly condition the hair to keep hair moisturised and protected against styling damage. Go to a salon twice a month to have a deep-conditioning treatment. Sleep with a satin or silk nightcap which will help to prevent roughing up the hair and breakage while you sleep. We wish you all the best, as it takes time and effort to have long hair. CS Team
Dear CS, My best friend is Hispanic and has very thick/coarse Indian hair. It’s so hard to style it just does what it wants. How can I advise her on how to control this hard-to style and manage her hair? Fatima from Cape Town Hi Fatima If you are blow-drying the hair make sure you have the right accompanying tools. With thick, coarse hair types you will need more heat. Make sure you prepare the hair for styling by shampooing and conditioning and then towel-dry the hair and apply styling products, either mousse or gel. Make sure your heat appliances have adjustable heat settings, as to control the amount of heat used makes the world of difference in your styling. Good luck CS Team | July / August 2015| CELEB STYLES
