A very important aspect that stands out in the merchant of Venice is the discrimination against the Jews coming from the Christians, that is why many theories have been made about the true reason why William created this book. It is said that what the author wanted was to give his point of view on the Jews, and we can see it when the villain of the story is a Jew; it is already well known that at that time, not being a Christian was an aberration, and it could even be considered a crime, that's how many practitioners died or had to migrate because of their religion. However it has also been taken as a criticism of the time then, because even though Shylock was the villain throughout the story, the reasons why he was angry were explained, which had to do with discrimination against Jews.
On the other hand, William took up many literary resources to write the play, for example, the idea of the three caskets comes from a latin book named Gesta Romanorum; The Jew of Malta also influenced a lot at the time of its writing, but what played a really important role were the plays of Ser Giovanni Fiorentino's Il Pecorone, whose stories are very similar to The Merchant of Venice. Finally, the words of the orator Alexander Silvayn’s can also be seen reflected in the book, with the way in which Antonio had to give a pound of his flesh in case he did not pay his debt on time.
