Vine PR founder Hayley Sing has been busy expanding her creative services around the Central Coast. Hayley launched her boutique public relations agency in 2019 when she was pregnant with her son, Teddy, and decided to return home to lay down roots.

“I have a huge love for the area, so it made sense for me to come back and use my experience and knowledge in a place that inspires me,” Hayley says. “I was in my early 20s when I decided to narrow down my skill set, and what it really came down to is my love for people, kicking goals, socialising and being creative.”

Hayley has extensive experience working on projects ranging from technology to lifestyle, restaurants, event spaces, TV personalities, music festivals, products and more. She kickstarted her career with a gig at a celebrity and music artist PR agency and soon expanded her knowledge internationally, working in guest relations and events at the world-famous Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak, Bali.

As the cyber scene evolved, she merged into the digital world of social media and influencer marketing. As an account executive, Hayley handled accounts for tech and lifestyle brands across the AustraliaSouth Pacific region, managing the likes of big-name brands such as Sharp Australia, Brother Australia and worldwide hard-drive company Seagate.

Hayley has worked with music festivals like Stereosonic and collaborated with celebrities such as UK artist Example, MasterChef winner Elena Duggan and Getaway host Laura Csortan. She has put together VIP luncheons for influencers and artists and recently organised an event in Whitehaven Beach in the Great Barrier Reef that was catered by Khan Kong from MasterChef

While her portfolio is impressive, Hayley says that working on the Coast is a dream come true for her. “I’m so fond of the beautiful waterways, beaches and national parks and I love how the restaurants, bars and cafés have really boomed in recent years,” she says.

VINE PR

Heading back to the Coast to establish her flourishing public relations agency is a dream come true for Hayley Sing.

“My favourite part of the job is putting together a shoot brief and watching it come to life. I like to work with local videographers, graphic designers and photographers. The creatives here are super supportive and I'm so proud to see the Central Coast's creative field expand."

Hayley helped launch and continues to work on the franchise angle for Erina’s Bump Health & Fitness as well as creating the launch event and campaign for the $6 million rebrand of The Entrance Social Club (formerly The Entrance Hotel).

She also volunteers her PR services to a local children's charity called We Care Connect, and for the past two years has helped manage their Mother’s Day charity event, attended by more than 100 people who have raised $15,000 each year.

"This project has been my greatest achievement and is close to my heart. The volunteers from We Care Connect are absolutely incredible. What they do day in, day out is more than I could ever do."

Heads Up

After two scary experiences of skin cancer, much-loved media star Deborah Hutton turned her considerable design talents to producing a range of stylish hats with local manufacturers Rigon Headwear.

COVER

When Deborah Hutton posted a photo of her dramatic facial scar on Instagram following an operation to remove two invasive basal cell carcinomas, it went viral. It also marked a turning point in Deb’s life: she is now dedicated to spreading the word about skin cancer prevention. In 2022 she made a documentary series, Skin Deep, with 7News Spotlight and she is a passionate ambassador for the Skin Cancer Foundation.

“I wish I’d known a lot earlier about harmful UV rays and the obvious steps I should have taken to protect myself, but like a lot of us, we weren’t fully aware and now suffer the consequences,” she says. “After surviving two significant skin cancer surgeries but still wanting to continue my love of the outdoors, I was looking for solutions.”

Enter Tina Madsen-Walcott, co-owner of Rigon Headwear with husband Peter Walcott. Tina saw the now famous photo of Deb’s scar and sent her some Rigon hats to try on. Deb was shocked to discover that her favourite golf cap and straw beach hat offered a bit of shade but no protection from UV rays.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and 95 per cent of most skin cancers are in the head and neck area, so regular skin checks are vital.

"If these skin cancers are not detected, you could lose everything you need to communicate with – your mouth, your ears, your nose – but when it's caught in time you can avoid invasive surgery and possibly save your life."

Deb says wearing hats that give the maximum possible sun-protection is really a no-brainer. “I wanted to make it my mission to share the message that your favourite hat may not be doing its job, and a UPF 50+ material has been proven to be more protective in blocking UV rays.”

Tina, Peter and Deb got together to design and produce Deb’s range of Canopy Bay hats, which launched in September 2021; the summer collection is now available online at canopybay.com.au and in stores across Australia. One of the most striking designs is the ‘Carla’ hat, named for renowned fashion designer Carla Zampatti, who passed away while Deb was designing the range.

“I wanted to acknowledge her enormous contribution to Australian fashion and felt this was a suitable way to remember her, having known her since I started modelling in the early 1980s,” Deb explains.

The post-surgery scar photo went viral and reinforces the need for regular checks and early detection.

Every Canopy Bay hat is certified Made in Australia and is created at Rigon Headwear’s warehouse complex in West Gosford. The hats are made from Peter’s patented Flexibraid fabric and undergo a rigorous testing procedure in Victoria before they can be certified UPF 50+. They are not only protective and stylish, they’re incredibly practical; they have an adjustable inside strap so they fit all sizes (and don’t blow away on a windy day); and they’re washable, squashable and spring back into shape after they’ve been packed flat.

Peter Walcott had been in his family’s haberdashery business for many years and when he started Rigon Headwear in 1998, he suggested that his Danish wife, Tina, a highly qualified biochemist, should join him. Tina had always been interested in fashion and discovered she loved the creative process involved in designing hats. As their company, then based in Botany, needed more space to expand, the couple decided to buy a warehouse in West Gosford and moved to Green Point.

“Our youngest daughter, who’s now 17, had just been born when we moved,” Tina says, “and our oldest daughter had to start school. We had to choose whether to travel from home in the Eastern suburbs to work at the new warehouse or live nearby. Fortunately, it all worked out and we’ve been happily based here ever since.”

WHAT IS UPF 50+?

What is the difference between SPF 50 and UPF 50? A piece of fabric with UPF 50 allows about 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation to reach the skin. The SPF number indicates how long the sun's rays will take to burn your skin. With SPF 50 it would take you 50 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen.

7

When covid hit in 2020, the couple decided to move the manufacturing arm of the business from China to the Coast. It was a risky decision but one that paid off. Rigon Headwear now employs about 35 people in its five warehouses and produces several different brands of hats, including new label Oogee, Before Dark, Tina M Copenhagen, Evoke, Summer Living, Autumn Daze, and all the headwear in the Australian Cancer Council’s range.

Ten per cent of the Cancer Council range’s wholesale price goes into cancer research and a showroom at Rigon Headwear's premises at 7/13 Enterprise Close, West Gosford, NSW 2250 stocks the elegant Christine range of turbans and scarves, designed for cancer patients who have lost their hair. The range is also available online at rigonheadwear.com.au/collections/christine-headwear.

LUNCH with Deborah Hutton

Deborah Hutton is rightly proud of her Canopy Bay range of hats, but she will never stop reminding us about the importance of preventing skin cancer. “It’s Australia’s disease,” she says. “It is usually invisible to the naked eye so regular skin checks are vital. I am very lucky to have an amazing surgeon who double-checks my skin along with my dermatologist every three months.

“Please do as I do now, not what I did when I was younger. You can still enjoy a wonderful sporty, outdoor lifestyle – just make sure you wear sunscreen, a proper hat and get regular check-ups.”

Deb Hutton is the keynote speaker at the Hunter Melanoma Foundation’s (HMF) 35th anniversary lunch at The NEX in Newcastle on Friday February 17, 2023. The event will feature stalls selling Canopy Bay hats, sun-safe Novo Tan products, Shy Skin swimwear and HMF merchandise; tickets are $120 per person and include a glass of Champagne on arrival and a two-course lunch. Book through HMF’s social pages, email claudia@hmf.org.au or call 0412 955 934.

Back to NATURE

Lisa Carney Design collections have been charming their way around the world for more than 20 years. Based in Avoca Beach, globetrotter Lisa has had her collections featured numerous times on the runway for Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, exhibited in Paris and worn by well-known celebrities such as Kirsten Dunst and Nicole Kidman. Lisa worked as a travel agent before her free spirit and wanderlust took her on many global adventures. But it was in Biarritz, the sophisticated French surf resort, where her career really took off.

The merchandise manager for Quiksilver Europe stopped her on the beach to ask about the jewellery she was wearing, which led to securing her brand Mamo Jo in partnership across 120 Quiksilver Boardrider stores in Europe.

Lisa then moved to Bali, where she established and trained a team of artisans. Her business grew and she was supplying 240 retail stores, including her own stores in Bondi Beach and The Rocks in Sydney.

After 10 years of endless summers, Lisa moved to the UK, started a family and opened a store in the market town of Warwick. Although she is now based in Avoca Beach, she continues to travel extensively and create new collections. Winding back the clock, though, Lisa says she created her first piece when she was just four years old.

“It was a shell necklace made with treasured finds from a summer holiday by the sea,” she says.

“Many years later I created a necklace using shells from a broken vintage shell lei that my great-aunt had bought me back from a holiday in Tahiti. This shell flower necklace went on to be the signature piece of my brand Mamo Jo, which is Caribbean for mermaid.”

Working with her hands and expressing creativity has always been a part of Lisa’s daily life. Her mum and six aunts loved sewing, painting and crafting and her grandfather was an industrial designer and inventor who encouraged ideas and creation.

10
Avoca Beach designer Lisa Carney is celebrating the beauty in imperfection with her new ‘Sand to the City’ collection.

“Grandma had a magnificent crystal collection that completely captivated me – the light shining into the glass display case created rainbows across the room,” she says.

Having spent a lot of time in Biarritz and Bali, the resort lifestyle inspires her collections, which feature sunset beach tones and the muted colours of coastline and surrounds. It is something that she likens to the burgeoning style of the Central Coast.

“We Coasties live a resort lifestyle too,” she explains. “We want to wear ocean-inspired jewellery and cool, comfortable clothes made with natural fibres that look and feel great. I have added some fabulous scarves and wraps to my collection that I admit are more couture in that they lean more towards luxury and distinction rather than practicality and function.

“But that’s fun! Silks and velvet for evenings out and cotton and linen for casual summer days and nights. These wraps are sheer and sexy and feel like a big hug when you wrap up in them.”

After a long coastal lockdown, Lisa is celebrating returning from the “sand to the city”. Her ‘Let It Be’ collection was inspired by being able to enjoy the arts and music performances again –fittingly, her work is now stocked at the Brisbane Powerhouse Performing Arts Theatre Boutique.

But it all begins with the ocean, Lisa says. Her new ‘Heart’ collection was created with the intention of showcasing nature’s perfectly imperfect state of flux, influenced by our beautiful Bouddi National Park.

In local Aboriginal language, Bouddi also means ‘heart’ and Lisa found the beach treasure that she is using in the new collection at the national park’s Maitland Bay.

“I have moulded these old broken shells and cast them into various metals. Shells that have been smashed on the rocks, tumbled by the waves for years and sanded by the ocean’s floor and washed up. That ‘heart of the shell’ is the tough inner workings that we all naturally possess,” she says.

“It’s just like the Zen philosophy Wabi-Sabi. That is, to find beauty in broken or old things. A celebration of the perfectly imperfect. The lovely asymmetric pieces I found on the beach are brought to life in silver and gold.”

Lisa says she wants everybody to feel empowered by nature. “We are all so busy and constantly in technology. What better way than to carry the reminder of nature on your fingers, around your wrist or neck, or to adorn yourself in jewellery and clothes that feel good?

“Be it through the mystical magic of stones, textures in the jewellery from castings of shells or pebbles or a natural fibre like linen and cotton, dyed in the colours of the seaside at sunset, within all of my pieces is a spirit of nature that reveals itself and connects us all.”

11 SPOTLIGHT

APPROACH Fresh

There’s plenty to celebrate at the award-winning restaurant with the best views on the Coast as the New Year kicks in. “We are aiming for a very clean, simple menu for summer that draws even more on as much local and sustainable produce as possible,” says Dimitris. “We’re excited to be using beef from a carbon-neutral Central Coast farm and our Murray cod comes from Aquna and is fully sustainably farmed.

“Most of our dishes include ingredients freshly picked from the restaurant’s garden, which also provides garnishes for bar cocktails and the gin menu. We are lucky to have fig, elderflower and citrus trees all developing well.”

Regular customers will be happy to see that some of The Cowrie’s most popular dishes are staying on the menu. For example, sashimi grade yellowfin tuna with grapes and ponzu, and appellation oysters that are hand-picked and then shucked to order. Pacific oysters roasted over coals with miso butter also remain a constant feature, along with wild mushroom risotto, which has become one of The Cowrie’s signature dishes.

The New Year brings new changes to The Cowrie in Terrigal: executive chef

Dimitris Aronis introduces delicious seasonal dishes and a recently expanded wine menu.

Dimitris says that he and the team spent a few months fine-tuning the wine menu.

“We already had some amazing local wines from the Hunter and Orange but we’ve also sourced the best from the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Mornington Peninsula. We then explored international wines from France, Italy, Spain and Germany, with SOM’s Stephane Pommier. We are really happy with its progress and had the side benefit of tasting some incredible wines along the way.”

Look out for news on The Cowrie's Facebook page about the upcoming opening of the Cellar dining space, which will offer tasting menus paired with premium wines and spirits for small groups.

The Cowrie is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Saturday, and for lunch and late-afternoon bar snacks and Champagne on the balcony on Sundays, at 109 Scenic Highway, Terrigal.

WINE CLUB

How to store wine

Whether you’re already something of an aficionado, starting a wine collection or only drink wine on days ending with Y, I’m here to help you get the most from your favourite tipple. Here are my five top tips for storing wine at home.

1.

THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE

Let’s start with one of the most important things that affect the quality of stored wine – the temperature of your storage area. Whether you’re storing it for a few weeks or a few years, wine generally likes to be stored at about 13ºC. If the temperature in the storage area drops to below minus 4ºC the wine will freeze, and if it’s above 20ºC it can accelerate the wine’s ageing process and destroy volatile compounds.

It’s also important to keep the temperature as stable as possible – big fluctuations can cause the cork to expand and contract, which means air can get into the bottle or wine can seep out around the cork.

2. SHOULD I BUY A WINE FRIDGE?

Not everyone has a space in their home for storing wine that’s consistently, cool, dark and moist, so yes, it’s a good idea to buy a wine fridge, or cooler. Prices vary but it’s worth investing in a good wine fridge if you’re taking your wine even a little bit seriously. Wine fridges are set to keep wines (including red wines) between 10ºC and 15ºC, and some have a cooler setting for Champagne. They also keep the wines at their preferred level of humidity. Regular kitchen refrigerators are too cold for wines, and food smells can even cause cross-contamination.

3. DOES HUMIDITY AFFECT WINE?

Extremely wet or dry air can affect the condition of wine, but this is more of an issue for professional collectors who are laying down wines for years in dedicated cellars. Very dry air can dry out the corks, letting air into the bottle that would spoil the wine, and very wet air can cause mould, which affects labels more than the wine itself. However, if you’re storing wine at home in a shed or garage, say, it’s worth buying a hygrometer to monitor the humidity level, which ideally should be around 60 to 70 per cent.

4. HOW DO LIGHT AND VIBRATIONS AFFECT WINE?

Wines of all varieties do not do well when kept in direct sunlight. UV rays can damage the flavours and aromas of wine – there’s a good reason why winemakers have used dark-coloured bottles for several hundred years.

Vibrations can disturb sediments in the bottle and disrupt the ageing process of wines, so avoid storing your wine in places such as the laundry or home gym if you’re planning to collect older, vintage wines.

5.

KEEP YOUR BOTTLES HORIZONTAL

The main reason for storing wine bottles on their side is that it helps keep the cork moist which, as mentioned above, prevents it drying out and letting air into the wine. The main reason for storing screw-top bottles horizontally is that it saves space and allows easy access.

WOY WOY AND UMINA

Spend the morning shaking off the post-festive season slump with a fun surfing lesson. Umina is the best place on the Coast to learn to surf because it’s shallow and the swell is generally low – check out Central Coast Surf School (centralcoastsurfschool.com.au) and Sals Surf School (salssurfschool.com)

Across the road, location doesn’t get much more ideal for children than the Jasmine Greens Park Kiosk, which is adjacent to possibly the best playground on the Coast (there are dozens!). If you’re looking for accommodation, the NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Resort is a kids’ wonderland with pools and water parks – and the beach is just a few steps away. (nrmaparksandresorts.com.au)

After a busy morning in Umina, head to the Fisherman’s Wharf in Woy Woy for some well-earned fresh seafood. There is a new oyster bar up and running and the menu features a delicious range of dishes showcasing fresh, grilled, barbecued and dry-aged seafood. (woywoyfishermenswharf.com.au)

ETTALONG

While delicious fare can be found all over the Peninsula, Ettalong is the heart of the local food scene. The Galleria is a unique dining and retail precinct set in an extraordinary art-deco Mediterranean-themed building that includes its own arthouse cinema. There are boutique shops, accommodation and several restaurants and bars that open to the street fronts of Schnapper Road and Ocean View Road. Toto’s Trattoria & Bar is a classic Italian lounge that offers a perfect fusion of old-world charm and modern flair – and live jazz every Sunday. (bartoto.com.au)

Just next door within the complex, Yusu is a hatted Japanese restaurant that serves up light delicacies in a quaint, cosy dining area or alfresco on the veranda. This one is incredibly popular with locals, so make sure you book. (02 4341 3296)

LA Taco is a pop-up cantina brought to you by renowned Coastie restaurateurs Hayley Hardcastle and Cameron Cansdell of Saddles Mount White. Bringing a little slice of Mexico to Ettalong, the menu features delicious tacos, enchiladas, tortillas, grilled chicken, nachos, tostados and corn-on-the-cob, all coming alive with jalapenos, guacamole, salsa or pepitas. (lataco.club)

Meanwhile, Palacinki Café serves up the most incredible crepes, both sweet and savoury – kids will lose their minds over the Nutella crepes. Directly opposite the Galleria, Coast 175 is one of the most popular cafes on the Peninsula, along with Lords of Pour. Health fanatics should try Innerglow Kiosk for refreshing smoothies, fresh juices, turmeric and matcha lattes, and amazing salads.

The Box on the Water is an Ettalong institution, a gorgeous spot for cocktails, lunch or dinner accompanied by scenic ocean views. The beach is perfect for young kids, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds here, spending time in nature while enjoying some high-quality Mod Oz cuisine. (theboxonthewater.com)

Speaking of the water, Bombora Ettalong Beach SUP specialises in stand-up paddleboard lessons, SUP Hire, SUP fitness classes, SUP yoga classes and SUPball. Sunrise paddles and tours are a wonderful way to explore the Peninsula’s picturesque waterways. (bomborasupfit.com.au)

AFFAIR Family A

Known as the ‘home of Australia’s favourite clay’, Keane Ceramics has proudly evolved from a small home studio into one of the country’s largest manufacturers, distributors and online retailers of clay.

Starting from humble beginnings, the beloved heritage brand was founded by Margaret and Roger Keane (pictured bottom right, opposite page). Their daughter Babette, who alongside her brother Giles inherited the business in 1999, tells her parents’ story beautifully.

“My mother took up pottery classes in the late 1960s and she had a natural talent, quickly becoming proficient in throwing and making,” she says. “My dad studied ceramics and became interested in sculptural forms around the same time. They bought a small acreage in Somersby and built a home there in 1972. I was brought back from the hospital where I was born to the same house that is our family home today.”

What started as a hobby turned into a full-time occupation when the Keanes opened their studio, attached to the family home, in 1973. “At

that time, it was fashionable and practical to buy local and support artists with handmade dinnerware," Babette explains. "Our kitchen was always stocked with Mum's new-found wares. Having to use a cup that was mass produced was so foreign to us, and never a substitute for a beautiful handmade piece.”

Babette and Giles grew up watching the process of firing, glazing, firing again and unpacking kilns. The studio became a gallery displaying pots, bowls, cups, plates and more. Gallery owners visited regularly and a long table was packed with one-off pieces that were either bought direct or shipped off to make way for the cycle to be repeated.

Recently, during the 50-year anniversary of the Gosford Regional Art Prize exhibition, Babette learned that Roger had won the Gosford Ceramics Prize in 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1976. “It was a great honour to see my dad chosen in the 50th-anniversary exhibition,” she says. “Many of his pieces are archived in the gallery’s collection.”

24
Inspiring the hearts and muddy hands of potters since 1979, the Keane family are local legends. And thanks to the pandemic, their empire continues to grow.
PHOTO JOSEF NALEVANSKY

The connection of cooking and clay holds fond memories for the Keanes. Babette remembers Margaret encasing quails in clay sculptures that were baked in the oven. Pizza-obsessed Roger held some massive pizza parties at the studio and recently built his own wood-fired pizza oven rigged with all the temperature reading equipment you would need when firing a kiln.

Giles and Babette recall that on every holiday or family trip they would visit customers, which reinforced the passion that inspired and drove their parents. “I remember taking holidays from my job at the time to help Mum with promotional trips for the business. I would share the driving from town to town, visiting potters’ associations and distributors along the way,” says Babette.

Eventually Margaret and Roger bought a small group of clay pits from a local supplier, renaming the business Keane Ceramics. Knowing that local clays from small seams would have greater variation and limited supply, Roger started researching how to use a range of commercially available materials with consistent supply for his formulations. Largely self-taught, development meant a lot of research for Roger, along with learning from constant testing.

Later he would buy a critical piece of lab equipment to measure the thermal expansion and contraction of the clays. This was key to ensuring good glaze for the end user.

Roger would test the properties and measurements while Margaret would test the plasticity and working properties in her studio. Running each clay through a series of processes and firings, the pair developed a range of stonewares, earthenware and grogged clays. Some of these heritage formulations are still in production, while being updated over the years to include new materials as others became unavailable.

Babette had not long finished business studies when her parents discussed her coming to work within the business. She was interested in learning more about the family business, and motivated to grow the company and innovate Keane Ceramics for future generations.

“When I started we didn't have a computer system, so it was my job to bring us into a new era where we could move beyond clay and offer pottery supplies and equipment,” she says. “I took on the role of office manager, which freed my father to dedicate himself to more clay formulation and Mum to continue her passion.”

As Keane Ceramics entered the next phase of its story, Babette’s brother Giles took over the formulation and production from Roger while Babette focused on marketing, retail and developing the brand beyond the clay range. In 2021 she took sole ownership of the company and became the only woman to lead clay manufacturing in Australia. Under her leadership, the company recently experienced an unforeseen surge in business, largely due to covid lockdowns. Newcomers were keen to try their hand at ceramics either as a hobby or an art form they could turn into a profession. There was a marked increase in both potters and the demand to buy handmade wares. On top of this, celebrities such as Naomi Watts, Brad Pitt, Seth Rogan and Kate Ceberano took up the wheel, creating new headlines for the industry.

“The younger generation gave pottery a resurgence in the ‘cool sphere’ and it hasn’t slowed down since,” Babette says.

Keane Ceramics took the opportunity to evolve to the next level. Even in the uncertain times of choked supply chains, inflation and a pending recession Babette has led the way, with her new flagship store in West Gosford adding new clay bodies to the range and seeking more distribution opportunities from overseas.

OSKARS

Nestled into the side of a steep hill in Killcare Heights you will find Oskars, a remarkable Tuscan-style estate that boasts panoramic water views and a fascinating history.

26

Once owned by German adventurer Oskar Speck, Oskars is one of Killcare’s most iconic homes.

Oskar is famous for kayaking from Germany to Australia in the 1930s; his story is vividly recounted in Vanity Fair, which described his epic 30,000-mile journey as “an adventure nearly lost to history”. He paddled for more than seven and a half years, battling malaria, sharks and hostile locals, only to be arrested as a prisoner of war when arriving in Australia.

Jeffrey Mellefont, a retired worker from the Australian Maritime Museum and an international yachtsman, told Vanity Fair that the voyage “dumbfounded” him. “Sailing, I could always heave to in storms or stand off a dangerous coast, get some rest and try again at daybreak. Speck had to get it right the first time, every time,” he said.

Oskar was kayaking through the Middle East, India and South-East Asia, facing treacherous conditions at the same time that Hitler rose to power during World War II. As a result, he was shot at, robbed and accused of being a Nazi spy and spent six years in Australian internment camps as a German prisoner of war.

Released in January 1946 when he was 39 years old – eight months after the war with Germany ended – he found work as an opal cutter at Lightning Ridge before moving to Sydney to begin a successful career as an opal merchant.

Once he was established, Oskar could have settled anywhere but he chose to buy the entire side of a hill at Killcare Heights. He operated his opal factory from the neighbouring block, which was later subdivided.

27
PROPERTY INSIGHT

The property spans more than 3,207 square metres and has 180-degree vistas across Brisbane Water to the Pacific Ocean – you can understand why Oskar fell in love with the place. Unrivalled in luxury and position, Oskars has been featured in numerous design publications and it is undoubtedly Killcare's premier coastal property. It has recently undergone extensive renovations and has long been a favourite escape for celebrities.

28

Featuring elegant interiors spilling out to magnificent gardens, sun-soaked terraces and a stunning, award-winning 11.7-metre infinity pool and spa, the Tuscan-inspired architecture has been beautifully designed around the concept of relaxed sophistication, with multiple private spaces for family and guests. Winding paths lead towards the bay, lending the property a magical, Mediterranean ambience.

Recently sold for $6.5m with Cathy Baker of Belle Property, Cathy says that the spectacular estate “must be seen to be fully appreciated”.

“I have sold numerous luxury properties around Killcare, but Oskars is truly one of a kind," she says. “From the unique history to the water and beach views spanning the entire coastline and bay, the gorgeous pool and expansive outdoor entertaining areas, it really has everything you could want in a high-end home.”

For the launch of Oskars, CCL&S teamed up with Kitty Scott of Cleonie Swim, a talented local designer who provided the beautiful swimwear featured in the shoot. Kitty says Cleonie Swimwear is made with the “consciousness, love and a completeness” that only an independent label can offer.

“We are focused on supplying sustainable and all Australian made products to the world. We believe in slow fashion,” she says.

A graduate of RMIT University, Kitty won a scholarship to study in London, Milan and Paris at the renowned Istituto Maringoni. She has worked with world-class brands such as Revolve, Free People, Intermix, Bloomingdales and David Jones. See cleonie.com

Working WONDERS

Meet Lauren Perrett, founder of Erina-based BubbaDesk – one of the country’s first co-working hubs that incorporates on-site childcare.

Like all brilliant concepts, you wonder why it wasn’t thought up years ago. When Lauren Perrett moved from the city to the Central Coast in 2021, pregnant with her and husband Tom’s first baby and working in a full-time corporate role, she was “blissfully ignorant” about future childcare and work arrangements.

“I just assumed I’d swan back into my job and some amazing person would come along and take over,” she says with a wry laugh. “No-one else in my team had children, so looking for childcare was a steep learning curve.”

Lauren wasn’t keen to leave baby Charles in day care until he was at least “old enough to tell me about his day”, employing a nanny was prohibitively expensive and the nanny she did find didn’t work out.

“I jokingly suggested to my mother’s group that we should all hire an office to work remotely and share a nanny, then pitched the idea to Tom. Being a risk-averse banker he wasn’t overly enthusiastic but three months later, BubbaDesk was operating in Erina and Tom is now our chief financial officer.”

As a working parent herself, Lauren understands the need for this service. Up to 24 people use the Erina centre each day; all the nannies are fully certified and there’s a carer-to-child ratio of one to four, for children aged from four months to four years. Two more BubbaDesks are due to launch in 2023, one in Tuggerah and one on the Northern Beaches.

“There’s a strong community aspect to the set-up,” says Lauren, “and it’s a great way to move from fulltime parenting to being a working parent again. Your child is right next door so you can pop in and see him or her any time, there’s a private breastfeeding area and plenty of parking so there’s no last-minute panic about collecting your child after work.”

If there’s a silver lining to the covid pandemic, it’s that many companies are now more familiar with remote working, whether part-time or in a hybrid remote and in-office combination. Lauren is already fielding enquiries about setting up more BubbaDesks around Australia and welcomes the community involvement.

Inspirational ARCHITECTURE

Copacabana is home to a new creative resident –talented Kiwi architect Adele McNab.

Moving from Sydney last year with her partner, Nick, and two-year-old son Riley, Adele McNab says she loves the Central Coast and is not looking back.

“We never really got used to the pace of the city – it was always the plan to settle somewhere quieter near the water,” she explains. “The coast is such an inspiring place to be an architect. Our approach to each project is to adapt design responsive to people and place. There are so many beautiful locations here.”

Adele graduated from Unitec School of Architecture in New Zealand with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture. While studying, she worked for a practice specialising in hotels throughout NZ and the Pacific Islands. As a graduate, she moved to Australia and worked at Stafford Architects for seven years as project architect for high-end residential projects.

Now running her own small practice, she has had five busy years working on some impressive projects in Australia and New Zealand. However, her favourite to date is her own Redfern terrace that won an award for the Australian Institute of Architects in the NSW Residential Architecture category.

“When we fell pregnant, Nick and I realised that we needed to either sell or renovate. It was the most dilapidated terrace on the row, falling down in places,” she says. “Redfern was also really personal for me because I’d lost my dad two years earlier and when that happened, I just had some pivotal moments where I realised that life is short. So we took on this really challenging renovation and I’m really proud of how it turned out.”

Set on a tiny 62-square-metre block, Riley's Terrace features an incredible central courtyard with an established tall grass tree that anchors the space and allows natural light into the internal living spaces. Adele says that light was the primary focus for the small-scale project, to design the building to be clever spatially and establish a connection back to the land and the fabric of Redfern. Simple materials used in their raw form ground the project.

Earth-coloured concrete offers warmth and comfort, a round skylight in the main residence filtering light onto a spiral staircase and kitchen area to capture the daily movement of the sun. Oversized awning windows improve the flow of air and shield the bench seat during rain.

Designed and custom-built to make the most of its glorious beachfront and bush setting, this Pearl Beach house recently won two prestigious industry awards.

Jewel IN THE CROWN
12 Coral Crescent, Pearl Beach
PROPERTY INSIGHT
WORDS SALLY MACMILLAN

Michael and Linda Cunningham, the owners of 12 Coral Crescent, Pearl Beach, were thrilled to hear that Gremmo Homes, the company that designed and built their house, won two categories in the recent HIA (Housing Industry Association)-CSR Hunter Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards: Best Custom Built Home $1,500,001 - $2,000,000 and Residential Interior Design of the Year.

The couple bought the property in 2009 when it was a rundown fibro shack, renovated it to use as a holiday house and in 2019 decided they enjoyed life on the Coast so much they would rebuild and make it their permanent home.

“Having lived in the house on and off for four years, we knew what we wanted in terms of our lifestyle and the design of the place,” Michael says. “We wanted to make the most of the beachfront location as well as the hinterland views at the back, and as we love entertaining, the flow from inside to outside had to work year-round.”

There are unobstructed “kick-ass” views of the beach and bush from the front and back decks and the marvellous sense of light, space and tranquillity is emphasised by three-metre ceilings on the middle level. “Having enough space for the family was also important – our grownup kids visit regularly – and the four bedrooms and study work really well,” Linda says. “The kitchen had to be ‘part of the conversation’, in that there’s a seamless flow to the kitchen from both front and back decks to the lounge and the dining room.”

It took about three months for the Cunninghams and Gremmo’s architect and interior designer to come up with the final design. “The company quoted us a build time of 13 months and it took exactly that, even though we were right in the middle of covid,” Michael says. “There were no hiccups and we’d definitely use them again.”

The striking house is incredibly energy efficient – 32 solar panels power a Tesla battery and the couple haven’t had a power bill for nearly two years. The wooden finishes on the exterior are actually made of aluminium DecoWood, which is low maintenance and resistant to salt corrosion. A low-maintenance (or “no-maintenance”) garden was also a priority. Rainwater tanks are concealed underground and the plants are all natives.

“We often see people wandering past on the road and stopping to smell the lemon myrtle,” Michael says. “The whole property is a delight for the senses.”

Country STYLE

Nestled within a magical garden setting on a 2.5-acre property, Rambling Rose is one of rural Holgate’s earliest and most beautifully updated homesteads.

353 Wattle Tree Road, Holgate

Since it was first built around 1910 on a magnificent acreage in Holgate, the original Rambling Rose homestead has been thoughtfully expanded and modernised over the years. The property spans nearly 2.5 acres, and the home is set to capture exquisite views in every direction across spectacular gardens and lush green lawns.

Boasting a brilliant north aspect, it's a home that seems to slow down time, inviting the outdoors in with graceful, bullnosed verandas and decks acting as a natural extension of the living

space. Free-flowing interiors feature dual lounge areas plus a spacious family room with a wood-burning stove, while the modern kitchen has stone benchtops, an induction cooktop and a walk-in pantry.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home has a separate purpose-built home office along with an artist’s studio, workshop and storage shed, a gorgeous swimming pool and large veggie patch. It is completely private and ideal for a growing family or weekend escape.
