Fear is weird...
Fear has big eyes,
but no one has ever seen him.
Sometimes he can save us.
But sometimes he’s a pain, creeping up behind us, not even a torch can help.
Sometimes we’re afraid for no reason and it was just Granny at all: maybe we’re scared of the getting some apples! funny noise behind the door,
And sometimes we can be very afraid, but we don’t know what we’re scared of.
Everyone is afraid somewhere else:
Alice is scared in the attic.
And a bat would be scared in Alice's room.
Dad might even be scared at work.
Bill is scared of having an accident.
Matthew is afraid of the dark,
but not an owl – owls get a fright when it’s bright.
Granny is afraid out on the street.
Mary is afraid of fires and floods.
And what about Emma and John?
The path showed them the way.
Look, it’s already night time here, and a bit of the day is still left over there.
Wolf! Emma nearly fell over.
It’s just Skipper, Emma. Yes. It was auntie’s dog Skipper, wagging his tail.
Fear ran a mile.
Emma is crying.
She’s scared. She forgot to do her homework and she’s afraid to go to school.
Emma, here’s a homework notebook, so you don’t forget to do it next time.
Emma has a notebook to keep Fear away. Fear flew out of the classroom window.
James’ dad is a hero. I'd be too scared.
Dad says he’s afraid too, but he must be brave.
The people he’s going to help are even more afraid.
Sometimes we can’t not be afraid. Other times, we’re afraid for no good reason at all.
Some of us are afraid that something is going to happen,
others are afraid that something is not going to happen.
People are very scared of death.
Some of us are afraid of spiders that are everywhere,
others of spooks that are nowhere.
But sometimes they don’t think of death at all – it’s weird.
So how can we overcome Fear?
You can’t buy bravery in a shop,
He’s asleep inside us.
he doesn’t live in the mountains.
We can wake him up,
Then we can forget our own pain,
He doesn’t grow in the forest,
so he can help us.
stand up for someone who’s being hurt by others,
you can’t pick him in the meadow.
He’s good at that.
or comfort someone who is also afraid of being at home on their own.
We’re all afraid sometimes. What helps to fight off Fear?
And can Fear be good?
