ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH GROWTH

“Our expansion in facilities, course offerings, and partnerships is driven by one primary goal: enhancing the lives of the people we serve.”

—President Jim Morton

The 2023-2024 annual report marks seven years since I became president of Cape Fear Community College, a milestone that fills me with immense pride as I reflect on the remarkable journey we’ve undertaken together. Since 2017, CFCC has grown and evolved in ways that have significantly strengthened our role as a key contributor to the community’s educational and economic landscape.

Our expansion in facilities, course offerings, and partnerships is driven by one primary goal: enhancing the lives of the people we serve. CFCC is a critical driver of economic development in our region, a role made possible by the incredible support we receive from our community. It is an honor to lead this outstanding institution, and I am deeply grateful to the dedicated employees who are instrumental in guiding our students toward success.

At CFCC, our mission is to turn students’ aspirations into achievements. By fostering strong partnerships with four-year universities and local employers, we ensure that our students excel academically and graduate with a clear direction for their future. We recognize that many of our students face significant challenges, and we are committed to removing obstacles so they can focus on their studies.

Addressing these barriers has been a primary focus for us this year. We have increased scholarship and grant support to unprecedented levels, ensuring financial concerns do not hinder students from pursuing their education. Additionally, opening a free drop-in childcare center is helping student-parents stay on track with their studies, alleviating one of the most common challenges they face. These efforts are part of our broader commitment to creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.

Cape Fear Community College is more than just a place of learning; it is a vital asset to our growing region. Each day, we provide exceptional educational opportunities that are closely aligned with the needs of local employers and relevant to the job market. Our deep engagement with community leaders, business organizations, and employers ensures that we remain responsive to the evolving demands of our region, continually adapting our programs to provide education and training that truly matters.

This year, with the support of our community, state, and local governments, and the generous contributions of our donors, CFCC expanded its footprint for healthcare training. The need for skilled healthcare professionals is dire, and I am proud to say that CFCC is leading the way in meeting employment needs in this vital sector.

As we look to the future, our focus remains on student success, community engagement, and educational excellence. We are committed to building on our achievements and continuing to make Cape Fear Community College a place where dreams are realized, careers are launched, and our community needs are met.

Sincerely,

EXPANDING HEALTH SCIENCES AT CFCC PREPARING SKILLED PROFESSIONALS TO MEET REGIONAL HEALTHCARE NEEDS

Cape Fear Community College is expanding its Health Sciences programs to meet the rising demand for healthcare professionals in the region. With new programs, advanced training facilities, and partnerships with local healthcare providers, CFCC prepares students for essential roles in the healthcare workforce. This growth reflects CFCC’s commitment to supporting community health and providing quality education for in-demand careers.

STRENGTH THROUGH GROWTH

REVOLUTIONIZING HEALTH CARE

NEW HANOVER COMMUNITY ENDOWMENT

Cape Fear Community College will receive $10,153,633 through a three-year distribution. In partnership with New Hanover County Schools, UNCW, and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, CFCC aims to recruit, train, and retain healthcare professionals in New Hanover County. This collaboration will strengthen support services, develop educational pathways, and provide innovative learning opportunities, including simulated learning, cohort programs, and exam preparation.

THE DAN AND SHEILA SAKLAD HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES CENTER: A LASTING COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE

Cape Fear Community College is expanding to meet Southeastern North Carolina’s urgent need for healthcare professionals. As New Hanover and Pender counties grow, CFCC is preparing students to fill critical healthcare roles that are essential to the region. Through expanded facilities and partnerships, CFCC is dedicated to creating a skilled, local workforce that will strengthen the community for years to come.

CFCC, in partnership with UNCW’s College of Health and Human Services, New Hanover County Schools, and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, is tackling the region’s healthcare workforce shortage through the Healthcare Transformation Project. Supported by a $22.3 million grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment—including a $10.15 million award to CFCC—this initiative focuses on recruiting, educating, and retaining healthcare professionals in New Hanover County. By expanding educational infrastructure, creating new pathways, and strengthening collaborations with healthcare partners, this project is building sustainable workforce solutions for the future.

A major component of CFCC’s expanding infrastructure is the new Dan and Sheila Saklad Health and Human Services Center, which was acquired with county support and, ultimately, $30 million in state funding. CFCC quickly went to work renovating the former Bank of America building, which is adjacent to CFCC’s existing downtown Wilmington campus.

The first phase of renovations was completed in January 2024, providing nursing classrooms, simulation labs, and drop-in childcare services. Phase 2, planned for Fall 2025, will add classrooms, office space, an additional nursing lab, student space, an interdisciplinary simulation space, and an expanded Dental Clinic, equipping students with hands-on training.

With the Saklad Health and Human Services Center, expanded healthcare programs, and strong community support, CFCC is positioned to make a lasting impact on the Cape Fear region. As Southeastern North Carolina continues to grow, CFCC remains dedicated to training skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals vital to meeting the community’s evolving needs, ensuring CFCC plays a pivotal role in advancing regional healthcare for years to come.

CFCC’s Associate Degree Nursing program is consistently top-ranked.

FROM CMA TO ADN: FAITH HOMMEL

Faith Hommel’s journey to nursing began after 20 years as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). She decided to pursue her dream at CFCC, attracted by its top-ranked ADN program. Her time at CFCC has brought personal growth, strong support from instructors, and hands-on clinical learning.

“Nursing blends my love for science and caregiving,” she shared. Though she found fulfillment as a CMA, she knew nursing would let her take on more responsibilities and make a greater impact. CFCC’s reputation and its 100% NCLEX pass rate made it an easy choice.

Clinical experiences, especially at Novant, have been a highlight. “The SIM lab and clinicals are incredible, and the instructors are top-notch,” Faith said. She also credits CFCC’s faculty and Learning Resource Center for helping her overcome challenges, particularly in math.

After graduation, Faith will explore options like wound care, hospice, and Novant’s residency program, which allows new nurses to rotate through departments. “I’m excited about the possibilities ahead,” she shared.

“I wanted a program that would set me up for success. CFCC’s ADN program has been ranked number one in the state for four consecutive years and boasts a 100% NCLEX pass rate.”

MOVING FORWARD

EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS

NEW HANOVER COMMUNITY ENDOWMENT

The New Hanover Community Endowment (NHCE) awarded $5.5 million to Cape Fear Community College to broaden its impact on high school students exploring advanced manufacturing and other industry sectors. This investment will connect students with post-secondary education, career pathways, and apprenticeship opportunities, strengthening workforce readiness. With the funding, CFCC will employ 12 full-time and five part-time instructors, outfit five labs, and acquire new instructional equipment. These upgrades will enhance existing programs in Machining, Mechatronics, Electrical, Automotive, Culinary, Dog Grooming, Barbering, and Mechanical Engineering. CFCC will also launch an Aviation Maintenance and Career Pilot program. This initiative will support an additional 100 students annually, while providing local businesses with a skilled talent pool.

CHARTING NEW WATERS

In 2023, Cape Fear Community College was awarded $7 million by the state of North Carolina to design and construct a custom 80’ aluminum catamaran research vessel for our renowned Marine Technology program. This advanced vessel will serve as a floating classroom, where students will gain vital hands-on experience through cruises that prepare them for successful careers in marine technology. Pictured below is the R/V Shackleford, which is similar to the ship being designed for CFCC.

EQUIPPING STUDENTS

TRAINING FOR REAL LIFE

“Community investment in hands-on job training is crucial for creating sustainable workforce development pathways. When local governments, businesses, industries, and organizations invest in these programs, they aren’t just supporting educational efforts, they’re building a pipeline of skilled workers equipped with practical, relevant experience that meets the specific demands of the region.”

LEARNING ON THE GO: CFCC OFFERS NEW MOBILE MACHINING LAB

As part of the 2023 New Hanover Community Endowment Grant, Cape Fear Community College acquired an innovative mobile training lab to expand access to skill-building opportunities throughout New Hanover County. This self-contained, mobile lab allows CFCC to bring Computer Integrated Machining training and Career and College Promise courses directly to any high school in the area.

Beyond schools, the lab can be set up in neighborhoods, extending these career-focused programs to students who may not otherwise have access. Participants will gain invaluable, hands-on experience in machining parts, acquiring practical skills in a real-world setting. This exposure can foster an interest in high-demand trades and equip students with foundational knowledge and confidence to pursue rewarding careers.

CONNECTING STUDENTS TO THEIR DREAM UNIVERSITY EXPANDING PATHWAYS FOR SUCCESS

At CFCC, we believe in empowering students with the tools, support, and connections they need to succeed. One way we work to enhance our students’ experiences is through educational partnerships. From early college experiences to unique university transfer partnerships, we help students of all ages and backgrounds achieve their academic and career goals.

Our partnerships open doors for students, ensuring they are prepared for whatever the future holds. Whether through summer career academies, dual-enrollment programs, innovative high schools, or university transfer partnerships, CFCC is committed to providing students with experiences and resources they need to succeed.

BREAKING STUDENT BARRIERS

EXPANDING SUPPORT AND BOOSTING STUDENT SUCCESS

Cape Fear Community College is dedicated to overcoming the challenges that prevent students from completing their academic goals. Many students face obstacles such as financial limitations, childcare responsibilities, and transportation difficulties, which force them to make difficult choices between essential needs and their education. To address these issues, CFCC launched several initiatives to make education more accessible.

In August 2023, CFCC introduced a free drop-in child care center for enrolled students, initially serving twenty children, ages two to twelve. Due to its success, the center expanded in January 2024 to accommodate forty children, including infants as young as six months. Additionally, CFCC partnered with WAVE Transit to offer bus passes to students, providing a reliable transportation solution for those who might otherwise struggle to get to campus.

In March 2024, CFCC transitioned to a year-round scholarship application process, allowing students to apply once per academic year and receive monthly evaluations for scholarships. This approach acknowledges the unpredictable financial challenges students may encounter, offering flexible support to help them stay on track. CFCC also provides emergency assistance grants of up to $1,000 for students facing short-term financial crises, such as unexpected car repairs. By addressing these critical issues, CFCC demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and student support, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue high-quality education.

POWERING FUTURES THROUGH ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIPS

The Electrical Apprenticeship Career and College Promise (CCP) program at CFCC is preparing the next generation of skilled electricians by offering high school students hands-on training and realworld experience. Supported in part by a Golden LEAF grant, the program provides comprehensive instruction, materials, and practical experience, setting students on a path to successful careers in the electrical industry.

Recent graduates Hayden Jacobs (pictured left), Cesar Reyes, and Stover Montoya have secured positions with A.B. Blake Electrical, a local family-owned business.

“The apprenticeship has taught me more than just electrical work—it’s taught me life lessons,” shared Hayden. As these students continue their apprenticeships, CFCC remains committed to helping young professionals build fulfilling careers and contribute to the growth of our community.

Cape Fear Community College has strengthened its commitment to providing industry-relevant education through a new partnership with Stevenson Hendrick Honda, offering students aspiring to become automotive technicians the unique opportunity for hands-on training directly at the dealerships. This collaboration further expands opportunities and reinforces CFCC’s role in workforce development by connecting education with real-world industry needs. The 16-week course equips students with essential skills, guided by experienced professionals, exposing students to the latest automotive technologies and repair techniques. Students who complete the course are guaranteed an interview with Hendrick. This partnership creates a direct pathway to immediate employment.

“This is an innovative approach to student development, and we are thrilled to participate. Inviting classes to build relationships with our team members while also working with modern dealership technology will give these students a leg up in the future. This is a true partnership with CFCC and our company as we work together to build opportunities for the Cape Fear region.”

Mother-daughter duo Jami Flowers and Cadence Brewer celebrate their graduation together from CFCC

Jami Flowers began her educational journey in 2003, pursuing a diploma in Pharmacy Technology. Her dream was delayed by life’s responsibilities, but she never lost sight of her goal. Now, over twenty years later, Jami proudly holds her diploma and looks forward to becoming a Certified Pharmacy Technician. She hopes to work in an in-patient facility where she can make a meaningful impact on patient care.

Reflecting on her mother’s perseverance, Cadence said, “My mom put her education on hold to be there for us, and I’m so proud that she’s finally pursuing her dreams alongside me.”

Cadence completed high school six months ahead of schedule and enrolled at CFCC to earn her diploma in Esthetics. Initially uncertain about her future educational path, she found a sense of direction at CFCC, where she learned not only the craft of skincare but also valuable lessons in discipline and respect. Currently working in a salon, Cadence’s next ambition is to start her own business.

The parallel journeys of Jami and Cadence highlight how Cape Fear Community College supports students at every stage of life, providing them with the skills and opportunities to pursue their passions and achieve their goals.

CFCC SMALL BUSINESS CENTER HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL SMALL BIZ SUMMIT WITH FOX NEWS’ BENJAMIN HALL

On Saturday, June 1, 2024, Cape Fear Community College’s Small Business Center hosted its second annual Small Biz Summit, Navigate the Future: Strategies for Success in an Evolving Business Landscape. This one-day event provided small business owners from New Hanover and Pender counties with valuable resources, expert guidance, and opportunities to connect and network with fellow entrepreneurs.

The keynote speaker, Benjamin Hall, a veteran war reporter and Fox News correspondent, captivated the audience with his remarkable story of resilience. Hall has reported from some of the world’s most dangerous war zones, including Syria and Afghanistan. In February 2022, he was sent to cover the Russo-Ukrainian war. On March 14, 2022, while on assignment, Hall and his crew were targeted in a Russian drone strike. Tragically, two of his colleagues lost their lives, and Hall himself was critically injured and stranded in Kyiv, unsure if he would make it out alive. His book, “Saved: A War Reporter’s Mission to Make it Home,” chronicles his incredible journey of survival, which continues to inspire audiences around the world.

Attendees left the summit equipped with new strategies for navigating today’s evolving business landscape, a deeper appreciation for the power of resilience, and actionable insights on how to grow and sustain their businesses both online and in person.

I was overjoyed to learn I have the resources to continue my second year of nursing school. CFCC’s ADN program, ranked the best in the state, offers rigorous courses and clinical experiences, and I’m committed to excelling in both. Having the support to fully focus on my studies means everything to me.

FAWZY TRAMAINE DAVIS, II

I was thrilled to learn I was chosen as a scholarship recipient and want to express my sincere thanks. Your generosity will help me pursue my passion for Mechatronics (robotics engineering). I’m excited every day about my future in this field, and your support will be instrumental in helping me achieve my goals.

MARLIYA WABALAS

Thank you for your generous donation. I’ve learned so much over the past year in CFCC’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program, and am excited for another great year ahead. Your support will make a huge difference. I’m currently working as a server at a retirement home to cover my expenses, so having help with tuition lifts a huge weight off my shoulders.

MESSAGES FROM OUR DONORS

Pamela Evans-Stein DR. STEVEN E. STEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

After my husband passed away, I wanted to honor him by giving back to the community. Steven worked various jobs to put himself through college, and I know how hard that was while managing studies. I chose CFCC because of its nontraditional students—parents, full-time workers, and those re-skilling after job changes—hoping this scholarship would provide the financial support they need to focus on their education and careers.

DEPUTY ROBERT EVANS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (BLET PROGRAM)

Rob was only 50 when he suffered a heart attack while directing traffic at Wateree Elementary School in Lugoff, SC, where he served as a Resource Officer for the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office. I chose the BLET program at CFCC to honor his dedication and the often unappreciated work of law enforcement. My family also has a strong public service legacy: my dad was a volunteer fire chief for over 25 years, my brother Russell was a volunteer fireman, and my nephew Russ was a volunteer fireman and deputy town marshal.

Tony Facemire

TOOLS FOR TECHS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

I am affiliated with several car clubs in Wilmington, and while collaborating with CFCC on another project, we learned about challenges faced by automotive school students. Many club members are civic-minded and support well-known causes, so I saw an opportunity to direct financial assistance toward a cause that resonates with them. The Tools for Techs foundation has brought me personal satisfaction, and we look forward to industry support.

Nevin Carr

JIM CARR MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Jim graduated from Cape Fear Community College in 2014 with an associate degree and a certificate in wooden boatbuilding. A talented artist, he loved working with his hands and valued the craft of boatbuilding. He was proud to receive a scholarship to help with his tuition. After graduation, he worked at Jarrett Bay and bicycled across the country from Virginia to the West Coast. Sadly, Jim passed away earlier this year, and we appreciate CFCC for honoring his memory through the Jim Carr Memorial Wooden Boatbuilding Scholarship.

CFCC FOUNDATION

MESSAGES FROM OUR DONORS

Deborah Brunson DARIUS R. BRUNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2023 by the family of Darius R. Brunson, this memorial scholarship supports students in the Culinary Arts program.

Darius earned his Culinary Arts degree from CFCC in 2016, and his family aims to provide financial assistance to students in this program. We are grateful for every donation. Before his passing in December 2022, Darius shared these inspiring words: “I love everyone and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life. Keep fighting with an indomitable will and lift those around you.” This scholarship honors his desire to uplift and inspire others.

Dave Anderson COLBY HAITHCOCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Colby Haithcock Memorial Scholarship was created after my stepson was killed in a teenage drinking and driving accident. Colby dreamed of becoming an Electrical Lineman through Cape Fear’s program. We began awarding $500 scholarships at Forsyth Tech in December 2018 and presented our first check to CFCC in December 2019. To date, we’ve donated $9,000 to Cape Fear students and nearly $25,000 overall across Forsyth Tech, Cape Fear, and Brunswick community colleges. We’re also starting a fund at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. We hope to partner with donors like you to sustain this scholarship, as we currently rely on donations from friends and self-funding. Your contributions will help us continue supporting students at Cape Fear.

JUDY HOLLY SIDBURY/CYNTHIA JENKINS BRASWELL

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP AND JUDY HOLLY SIDBURY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP

I became inspired to donate to CFCC’s nursing program after the passing of my wife, Judy Holly Sidbury, with whom I shared 60 wonderful years. She was not only my beloved partner but also my best friend and business collaborator. After she fell and suffered a severe brain injury in April 2022, we spent six months surrounded by caring nurses. Their dedication and the stories we heard about their struggles to obtain degrees inspired me to donate to the CFCC nurses’ scholarship foundation in Judy’s name. This is my opportunity to give back and support others in achieving their goals.
