JOB SKILLS TRAINING

MEDICAL BILLING VS MEDICAL CODING Medical billing and medical coding are often confused as the same profession because both require similar skill sets and employ similar kinds of tasks, but they are very different career options. Both the professions represent the administrative & financial side of the healthcare industry, but there are some stark differences between the two professions. Both the jobs deal with the medical records of the patients, but the medical coders review the patient’s records and assign proper codes based on the information provided by the medical staff. Medical billers then use specialized software, into which all the medical codes are entered. Coders and billers work behind the scenes at clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and pharmacies, so that the insurance company is properly billed. Coders hardly interact with the patients during their careers, but have to regularly communicate with the healthcare providers. Coders should be able to apply approximately 144,000 different codes which they will communicate to the medical biller. Medical coders are high on the technical side, where the coder is required to have medical knowledge, including that of anatomy and medical terminology. A medical biller audits, processes, submits and follows up on claims with health insurance companies in order to receive payments for the services given by the healthcare provider. Medical billers have to interact more with patients, medical staff and Insurance company staff. The biller will have to interact with the medical coder as well if needed. A biller has to make sure that a proper reimbursement is received from the Insurance Company. A biller needs to understand medical insurance, claims process, the appeals process and the impact on the practice’s revenue to successfully be able to optimize revenue performance. When the claims are submitted to the insurance company, it is the responsibility of the billers to verify the correct billing format, assign the proper modifiers and submit the required documentation with each claim. Medical billers are responsible for correct billing, for which they communicate with patients and their health insurance companies professionally. They keep all the invoices organized and ensure payment is done in a timely manner. They are well versed with the coding language and are familiar with deciphering an assortment of medical invoices. On the other hand, medical coders do not work either with the insurance companies or the patients directly. Coders interpret medical records and capture proper codes. Note that every action taken in a medical office has a corresponding code making the work of coders very critical. However, it is the obligation of both billers and coders to explain the charges and breakup of the bill, especially when the patients need to understand their payment obligations such as co-insurance and co-payments, which their insurance company specifies. Simply put, medical billers and coders work together so that the physicians and other medical staff get paid timely. This is followed by a regular follow up with the medical insurers in order. Coding and billing are both essential to make sure that the money finds its way to the client’s bank account. It may be done either by two separate people or by a single individual, depending upon the size of the office. CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE ACCESS ASSOCIATE - CHAA 910.362.7909 | tparris@cfcc.edu

This program is designed to prepare students to earn certification as a Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM) through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM). The CHAA certification is designed to maximize the knowledge base for the medical insurance biller. The certification equips the medical insurance biller with credentials needed to maintain high level subject matter expertise in medical billing and regulatory guidelines associated with revenue cycle management and patient access. Students will learn the principles of medical billing and insurance, and the skills and knowledge required to provide outstanding service in all areas of the healthcare process. Medical billers play a vital role in the connection between health care providers, patients, and insurance companies. Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims with health insurance companies to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. As a medical biller, you’ll need to read patient charts to determine medical history, including diagnoses and treatments given. Understanding charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient follow-up are duties of a medical biller. Medical billing translates a healthcare service into a billing claim. The responsibility of the medical biller in a healthcare facility is to follow the claim to ensure the practice receives reimbursement for the work the providers perform. A knowledgeable biller can optimize revenue performance for the practice. For those new to healthcare it is recommended that you pursue the billing certification before the coding certification. CFCC is the only school in the region that offers this program and is accredited with NAHAM. Certification exam is $145. CHAA exam payment is facilitated through naham.org. Courses should be taken in order as listed below. Job Opportunities: Patient Access, Patient In-take Specialist, Unit Clerk I, Records Technician, Medical Records Clerk, and Billing Specialist

McKENLEA

HORRELL

CFCC has prepared me for the workforce. My success in the Nurse Aide program definitely put me on the nursing path. I am excited to start the next step.

Learn more about Nurse Aide Career and College Promise at CFCC!

CFCC CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE McKENLEA HORRELL

FAST-TRACK TO SUCCESS W hile attending Pender County High School, McKenlea Horrell embarked on the education fast-track by also enrolling at Cape Fear Community College. She wanted to take advantage of the free college courses and expand her knowledge and skills beyond the standard high school curriculum.

DUAL ENROLLMENT AT CFCC Dual enrollment allowed McKenlea to explore career options while earning college credits. Her interest in a healthcare career prompted her to take nurse aide courses at CFCC’s Burgaw Center. “I loved my classes,” McKenlea commented. “My instructor was amazing. I did well in the class because I learned so much from my instructor, Michelle Hill.” McKenlea’s commitment and hard work paid off, as she earned her Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification before her high school graduation. Her achievements showcase her proactive approach to shaping her future in the healthcare industry.

FROM NURSE AIDE CERTIFICATION TO SKILLSUSA CHAMPION Recognizing her talent and potential, McKenlea’s high school health science teacher recommended that she participate in the SkillsUSA North Carolina Championship. SkillsUSA is a national partnership of students, teachers, and industry, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce by providing students with the opportunities to gain personal skills, workplace skills, and technical skills grounded in academics. McKenlea’s passion and expertise shone through as she competed in four challenging categories, including infant CPR, dressing/undressing a patient with an IV, proper application of personal protective

equipment (PPE), and radio pulses. Her unwavering focus and extensive training paid off, as she secured the first-place position among her peers.

TRIUMPH AND OPPORTUNITY

While the first-place winners of the SkillsUSA competition are typically eligible to participate in the National SkillsUSA Championships, McKenlea has chosen to take a different path. Instead of pursuing the national competition, she achieved a personal victory by securing a coveted job offer from Novant Health’s neurology department. This remarkable accomplishment not only marks a significant milestone in McKenlea’s career but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration for aspiring nurse aides. Her dedication, skill, and success showcases that with passion and hard work, one can achieve their goals and positively impact the lives of others in the healthcare industry. “If you want to help people and have an interest in healthcare, I recommend taking the nurse aide course at CFCC,” shares McKenlea. “It’s a great way to get an inside look at the healthcare industry and discover if it’s the right career choice for you.”

IMPACTFUL PATIENT CARE McKenlea is not finished with her career plans. Her sights are set on the next step in her educational journey — applying to Cape Fear Community College’s (CFCC) Associate Degree Nursing program. With the valuable experiences and knowledge she has gained through her dual enrollment and nurse aide courses, McKenlea is eager to further her education and expand her nursing skills. With her sights set on making a difference in the lives of patients, McKenlea is ready to begin her journey toward becoming a skilled and compassionate registered nurse.

Your most important sales tool is your website. Buyers are vetting you before they talk to a salesperson. In fact, buyers go through 80% of the shopping process before contacting you. Just like your sales staff, your website has to be spot on to create trust and answer the questions they’re asking. Customers want to control their buying experience and the website is where they have that control. In this seminar you will learn to plan out a website to bring you more business. We’ll discuss planning a site, finding a target customer, appealing to that customer, getting the client to buy, creating engagement, and tips and tricks that we use everyday that you may not be aware of. Outline of the class: • Why do you need a website? • Where do you start when creating a site? • What is your highest return on investment? • How do you appeal to your target client? • What content needs to be created to appeal to your target? • How do you appeal to Google? • Ways to create engagement on your site.

CJ JONES: EMBRACING THE JOURNEY and

DISCOVERING HIS PURPOSE CJ Jones knew he wanted a career that would bring him fulfillment and purpose that would keep him close to home. He explored various career options. Undeterred, CJ resolved to enhance his skillset and uncover new opportunities by enrolling in classes at CFCC.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS CJ kickstarted his new journey at CFCC by earning his forklift certification. However, CJ’s thirst for knowledge and desire to grasp every chance for advancement led him further down the road of continuing education. Eager to broaden his horizons and delve deeper into the intricacies of modern manufacturing and production-related occupations, he made the decision to enroll in CFCC’s Production Technician program. This comprehensive curriculum equipped him with a diverse skill set, encompassing not only safety awareness but also honing his problemsolving abilities and introducing him to the essential industrial tools and maintenance practices.

EMBRACING THE FUTURE OF AUTOMATION Impressed by CJ’s commitment to advancing his career, his fiancé and future brother-in-law shared a Facebook post from CFCC’s account promoting their Mechatronics Engineering Technology program. Intrigued by the idea of working with automated processing systems, CJ promptly contacted CFCC to gather more information about the program. In the spring of 2022, CJ enrolled in CFCC’s Mechatronics Engineering Technology Automation certificate program. Under the guidance of program director and instructor Jason Randall, CJ began training for his new career focus.

EMPOWERING FUTURES Randall, who also takes on the role of academic advisor for Mechatronics students, recognized CJ’s potential and introduced him to the Corning Technician Pipeline Program (TPP) apprenticeship. He knew this opportunity could hold great promise for CJ’s future endeavors. In 2008, Corning launched the TTP program, encompassing six North Carolina community colleges, with Cape Fear Community College being added in 2021. The apprenticeship allows students to earn degrees in Mechatronics Engineering, among other select industrial fields, while working at Corning. Corning pays tuition for the entire program and guarantees a full-time job after graduation. Spring 2024 | cfcc.edu/ewd | 910.362.7000

THRIVING THROUGH APPRENTICESHIP Encouraged by Randall, CJ applied for the apprenticeship and was accepted into the program. By the fall of 2022, CJ was enrolled in the Mechatronics Engineering Technology associate degree program and working part-time for Corning. Even though Corning provides a full-time salary, CJ is only required to report 8 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters. The work-based learning allows additional hands-on training as CJ uses his coursework in real-world applications. CJ’s commitment to Corning includes signing a 5-year contract, part of which covers his time in school. Upon graduating, he intends to dedicate himself to full-time work for a minimum of three years as per the obligation, yet CJ envisions a career trajectory extending far beyond the contractual completion date with Corning.

NEW CLASS! METALWORKING 101 Are you an avid car person? The fundamentals of restoring old cars using sheet metal is not a thing of the past and this class is perfect for the hobbyist or collector. Sheet metal work falls into two realms: manual arts and technical skills. Because elements of judgment, efficiency, experience, and even inspiration are possible in sheet metal work, it borders on being an art. However, other aspects of sheet metal work, such as hammering, welding, and knowing the effects of heat on this material, are highly technical and require a clear understanding of cause and effect before you can understand and perform them successfully. Dress code: Long sleeve shirt recommended, long pants, enclosed shoes, no loose hanging jewelry, and hair must be up and out of the facial area. Burgaw Center | 18 hours | $125

The marketplace has become very complex and most senior citizens don’t have the sufficient time to keep up with the latest technology coming out of Silicon Valley every other day. Due to this, they are more likely to miss important things like latest security upgrades or the latest technology trends and even new fraud schemes. This makes them susceptible to these frauds and scams. Students will learn how to identify scam attempts, phishing emails, setting up secure passwords, top ways seniors are taken advantage of, and what to do to avoid being a victim.
