building community 2018 C O MM U N I TY L E A DER S H IP AWAR D The Community Foundation’s Community Leadership Award is presented annually for outstanding community service and dedication to improving the quality of life for all Northern Virginians. In 2018, the award went to Ellen and Jim Dyke. Jim previously served as Virginia’s Secretary of Education under former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder and as domestic policy advisor to former Vice President Walter Mondale. He is currently a Senior Advisor with McGuireWoods Consulting LLC and is a well-known leader in the business, education and government arenas, both regionally and state wide. He serves on the State Go Virginia Board and chairs the K-12 Committee of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
Ellen previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Peirce Warwick Adoption Agency, Chair of the District of Columbia Law Revision Commission and Vice Chair of the Virginia Commission on the Humanities. She was a practicing attorney for over 30 years until her retirement from the Venable law firm. She is the chair of the Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation Board of Directors and is the author of Adam and Steve, a novel of legal intrigue that explores the subjects of marriage equality and intolerance.
