ATHLETICS

The football team qualified for the school’s first NCHSAA 4A state final appearance and placed second among all NCHSAA schools for TEAM GRADE POINT AVERAGE during the fall 2019 term.

Some 35 of our 2020 graduates are playing COLLEGE SPORTS.

We continue to strive to reach our goal of getting 100 PERCENT of our students involved in athletics at some level.

All athletic programs, serving more than 900 STUDENT-ATHLETES, were involved in service, outreach, and seasonal leadership retreats.

Claire Curzan ’22 established two Women’s Swimming HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL RECORDS, Jack Grazen ’20 became the school’s first football player to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a single season, and Carson Williams ’20, the NCHSAA 4A Men’s Indoor Track & Field state champion in the 1600 meters run,– tallied the state’s fastest indoor time in 2019-2020.

Baseball alumni were celebrated as “Boys of Summer,” in 2020. Noah Campbell ’17 signed his first professional contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and Max Schrock ’12 took to the field for the Saint Louis Cardinals to become our school’s FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER.

Gibbons last year won its 15TH NCHSAA WELLS FARGO CUP for overall athletic excellence, giving the school its second consecutive NCHSAA 4A Wells Fargo Cup. Gibbons is the first NCHSAA school to earn back-toback state cups in three competitive classifications – 4A, 3A, and 2A.
