The Buffalo Bills play in Inglewood California next Thursday against The LA Rams. Here’s a peek at the impressive City of Inglewood which I visited last Inglewood, season.California is a Black City neighborhood with beautiful manicured lawns and architecture. Everyone seems to take pride in the community and won’t hesitate to tell you so; We spoke to unofficial historians, who took us down memory lane telling us about how the main drag of Market Street was the epicenter of Black businesses. Market Street reminds me of Jefferson Ave in Buf falo (at least the way it once was!) There are plenty of retail vendors on both sides of the street and several Black owned food trucks located throughout the neighbor hood. Woody’s Bar-B-Que at 475 Market St. reminded me of Lee’s Barbeque- how ever Lees has a better BBQ sauce. Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen at 202 E. Manchester Blvd. had me feel ing at home like I was at the once historic soul food res taurant, Gigi’s in Buffalo. Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen has been open since 1975 and both long standing Black owned businesses are a destination point while visiting Inglewood. A local couple, Steven and Andrea, who grew up in the neighborhood told us about some of the other businesses and landmarks in Inglewood. “Everybody went to the movies on Market Street along with the sneaker store and five and dime store both of which I worked as a teenager, “recalled Andrea. This area also re minded me of Clarissa Street in Rochester, . Inglewood is a city unto itself with over 100,000 people living there along with The New So Fi Stadium, The Fabu

COLTRANE

Born on September 23, 1926, legendary saxophonist and jazz composer John Coltrane would illuminate and trans form the music world until his untimely passing in 1967. His innovative and spiritual approach to music earned him accolades not only as one of the greatest saxophonists of all time but as one of the most acclaimed musical figures of the 20th Century. In the liner notes of his seminal album A Love Supreme, Coltrane reveals that he had undergone "by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, full er, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music." Through the COLTRANE festival and her work as the Chief Executive of the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collec tive, Dawn Martin Berry-Walker, continues to spread the joy of jazz and honors another important musical legacy, Her father’s — James “Pappy” Martin. “I am extremely grate ful to continue the tradition he started decades ago. I thank the Burchfield Penney for helping to sustain this legacy with warmth, generosity, and a standard of excellence. Our theme this year, Celebrating Women in Jazz, will be exemplified at this event with performances by Cassie Watson Francil lon and Alex McArthur as we present the music of John and Alice Coltrane,” she shares. The Success+Me company was created by Sam Hill and Phil Davis Sr.; two entrepreneurs and career professionals, born and raised in Buffalo, NY, that want to help prepare young people from underserved populations, for success in the professional world. After meeting through a mutual friend and working with each other virtually during the pandemic, they co-produced the popular SkoVu TV original series "How I Came Up," which highlighted over 30 different professionals and entrepreneurs success stories, which have been watched by almost 1 million people to date from around the world. After working together for almost two years, the two decided to collabo rate on developing a professional development course, entitled Success+Me, which will feature various professionals, teaching success skills to youth and young adults. The first course added to the professional development series was the Entrepreneur Course, originally developed by Hill and edited by Davis in 2021. It was successfully launched in sum mer 2022 as a part of the Canisius Academic Talent Search Earn While You Learn program. Hill, after hearing from Davis how well the students were doing with the course, decided to create an event where five of the top students would be given the opportunity to pitch their business in front of a panel of judges and an audience, where the student who had the best pitch would receive a stipend for $1,000 to go towards their business start-up costs. The event will also feature a panel discussion featuring successful profess ionals who are past and current guests of the "How I Came Up" series. The event on Sat. Sept. 17th is free and open to the public. Doors open at 11am; Success Sum mit Panel starts at 11:30am;Pitch Competition starts at 12:30p.m. featuring special guest panelists / Judges: Detra Trueheart (Trueheart Speaks), Dennis Wilson Jr. (Mr. DWilson Events), Alexis Beltre (Sodexo), Shantelle Patton (That Brown Bag) Jamil Crews (Crews Control Media), Sydney Hill (Miss Buffalo Outstanding Teen 2022). The Buffalo Bills play in Inglewood California next Thurs day, August 8, against The LA Rams. I see the Bills playing a very physical game on defense with blitz packages dialed up by Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier in order to assist rookie cornerbacks Kaiir Elam and Christian Bensford. The Bills defensive front will be able to stop the run and force the Rams into passing situations. The Bills offensive line is suspect due to lack of time playing together, with veteran tackle David Quessenberry replacing injured Spencer Brown starting at right tackle as well as to slow down future Hall of Fame nose guard Aaron Donald. Prediction: The Bills win 27 – 24 in a closely contested game. Bills QB Josh Allen looks already primed for a huge passing game with so many new targets to go along with Diggs, Davis, and Knox. If you’re going to the game enjoy the vibrant Inglewood community and the Kick Off game to start the 2022 NFL season. “Dean’s Day at Dewey Park” was alive with music, food and plenty of love Saturday as the Dewey Street neighborhood and surrounding communities turned out to pay tribute and remember the late Elijah Dean Scott, a beloved youth coach and mentor for countless youngsters and aspiring athletes in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Among the friends and loved ones in attendance was Mayor Byron Brown. A Trailblazer Street Sign honoring Dean is expected to be erected soon. There is also talk of either renaming or adding his name to the sign designating Dewey Park. A Dewey Game in June honored Elijah Dean Scott. Many of the college and professional standouts in the Dewey Game, named in tribute to Scott’s neigh borhood, played for the travel teams he organized. Dean made his transition in February. Saturday was his birthday. Photos are from Saturday’s event. Dean pictured top right (inset). Challenger

RaceWhyFirst.not us is the million dollar question. As I drive through the community I see more stores and businesses springing up but they’re not owned by African Americans. Some of these same store fronts are expand ing their buildings at our expense. Afri can American residents spend thousands of dollars in these establishments, all too often purchasing over priced items and or old out dated foods. The vast majority of the merchants of these stores do not sup port the local community or sponsor any little league teams in the neighborhood or hire at least one person from the commu nity. Some of these stores are run down and down right filthy. Some deal in illegal activities. Yet we have elected officials that live in the neighborhood who support these establish ments and look down on the few community members that have established businesses in their districts. My question again, is why not us? Why can we not as a community, a people, come together and form our own market places? Why does it seem like that we’re th only people that will not stick together? Whenever a Black owned business opens, many of us will not support it. A fine example is Grants Variety Store on East Ferry, owned and operated by Betty Jean Grant and her husband. Everybody in the E. Ferry area should be flocking to her store before going anywhere else. If her business was patronized like the other stores, the Grants could have by now been able expand their business for the community’s betterment.

I still frequent MLK Park often and take joy in watching the children play in the little water they do have.

I’m just saying people, in the words of the Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Honorable Elijah Muhammad (PBUH) we must and we need to come together not just when a cor rupt cop murders a son or daughter, but come together and form our own banks, our own markets and stop the nonsupportive attitudes. We can no longer depend on others to take care of us. We need to take care each other. Come on people we’re de scended from a race of people that educated the world and here we are, look at what we have become. MAGA- Make AFRICA Great Again! I'm just sayin'...

STAY WOKE

And speaking of time. Children and families should be able to enjoy the water in the spray pad– what little there is – at least until 7:30 p.m. across the city! This summer we’ve had some very hot days and it doesn't get dark until 8:45 p.m.

I dedicated close to 12 years of my life fighting the powers-that-be to bring water back for the children on Buffalo’s East Side and neighboring areas so they could enjoy themselves. I call it “urban beaching!” The reopening of the water feature and splash pad started out great – with a lot of fanfare and a lot of promise. But like most things disguised as progress in this community, it's soon to be forgotten or neglected thanks to misleadership.

By Bernie Taylor

City Hall spent $4.5 million dollars for the long-awaited, state-of-the-art splash pad at Martin Luther King Park which included a “state of the art” water feature with 15-high water sprays synchronized with colorful lights – which has been missing in action for years.

FULL MOON WATCH The full harvest moon will rise on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 5:59 a.m. September's harvest moon will have the signs feeling a little uneasy, but it does offer an opportunity for a fresh start. It is symbolic of new beginnings and a door to spiritual awareness.During the harvest moon, it's best to slow down, wait, and see what happens in your life. Enjoy the beautiful September sunsets, look back at your achievements, and take a deep breath . . .

“Trans-Parent-See”: Reflections on Superintendent Williams State of the Schools Address

Right now, we don’t have any other choice. This summer the people on the East Side and surrounding areas have been short changed.

RETURN THE WATER TO MLK PARK!

But the fact remains that the condition of the spray pad and the absence of the once touted water feature (complete with colored lights) is a travesty! This community needs to demand accountability from our mayor and the Buffalo Public Works Department. Return the Spray Pad to its full capacity and bring back the water feature!

On a national level, Black people are major consumers in the American economy spending more than $1 trillion a year on goods and services. Yet just a fraction of those dol lars go to Black-owned and operated businesses. Locally and nationally, this must change. We must, as we’ve been told by many well-known African American leaders over the last hundred plus years and to this day, DO FOR SELF. Some of our elected officials care more about the plight of new comers than the people that elected them. If we had strong financial based business associations, we would have a power base and call out these clowns we elect every couple of years who do nothing but twiddle their thumbs.

William Shakespeare once said, “your greatest strength begets your greatest weakness.”. One of the best things our new Superintendent did last Friday at the State of Education address was be transparent about the issues. In about a week from now 3,000-5,000 will be left on bus stops in the mornings, and even more will be getting home late in the afternoon. Yes this is a nationwide problem but when you talk about the effects it has on the 3rd poorest city in the country, it hits a little different. Most of the children being left on the bus stop come from very hard conditions and the reality is when we leave them on the bus stop for x amount of time plus the time they spend on the bus which on average is 55 minutes each way, we have to understand that we are creating conditions for a bigger issue to happen here. Our school district operates over a BILLION dollar budget. At the last board meeting a bunch of six figure administrators got 7% raises. Our Superintendent is getting paid 270,000 dollars. Teachers are protesting because they want a raise which will probably be the highest paid teacher contract in the history of our district. Teachers, who also with the stroke of a pen, can eliminate the problem all together. If the teachers agree to a 3-tier bell system, which means school start times of 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 instead of just the 8a.m. and 9a.m. Teachers agreeing to this would mean NO KIDS LEFT ON THE BUS STOP. The adults seem to understand how to make sure they are well compensated for the jobs they do, all the while our children are literally left out in the cold. What’s predictable is that when you create the conditions for bad things to happen they usually happen. The conditions that all the adults have created puts only parents and students at risk. Parents now have to go to work late or not at all. Students now have to spend large amounts of time waiting on a bus, then almost an hour on the bus (each way) and then hours after school waiting for a bus. All the while checks are going out and people are still getting paid. What we learned from the Superintendent's address is this: ALL the adults know what the problem is. They can ex plain it and tell us all about it, but what it seems they can’t do is solve it. Parents understand this, what we should have heard at the address was a CLARION CALL to understand OUR CHILDREN WILL BE LEFT ON THE BUS STOP. Understand that when something hap pens, it shouldn’t come as a surprise it should come as an expectation. Being transparent is a great thing and we should also pay attention to what it reveals. Family we know this train is coming, the question we have to ask ourselves is, if the Superintendent can’t change it, the Board can’t change it, then who can? Bob Marley says “You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.”

Half of the spray heads at the Martin Luther King Park were not working, leaving the children with little spray spurts and a small puddle surrounded by a huge circle of concrete. Buffalo Public Pools have been closed all summer and people come from all across council districts to MLK Park to bring their children to play in the splash pad. And although everyone makes the best of it, the conditions are shameful!

Just last week I had a free cookies and snack pack give-away for the children playing in the splash pad. It brought smiles to their faces, and their families appreciated it (Photos forthcoming).

Imagine attending all the great events in the park, like the Pappy Martin Jazz Festival, The Funk Fest or the Pine Grill Reunion with the water and the colored lights on beautiful display . If this water feature was in any other community in the City of Buffalo the water would be on and the lights would be dancing until at least 8:45 p.m. !
