DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION WHAT IS AERIAL SILKS Aerial silks (Aerial contortion, aerial tissues, fabric etc.) is a type of aerial acrobatics performance hanging from a fabric. It can be performed by a single artist or m o r e t o g e t h e r. Artists climb and perform on the silk fabric without any safety support. Every owns body tension and expertise ensure the safety up i n t h e a i r. The fabric gets wrapped around the body to be able to perform poses and even drops. The fabrics used as silks are very strong and flexible. It can vary in width and elasticity to provide different conditions. The fabric is really long to ensure that the silk is able to be doubled. This provides the base of two strips of fabric to perform onto. Aerial silks is a way of expression as well as a testing our limits and g r o w i n g b e y o n d o u r c a p a b i l i t y. I t combines acrobatic, exercising, flexibility and dance in a very u n i q u e a n d e x c i t i n g w a y. WHERE DOES IT COME FROM Their origins of Aerial Silks are found around 1959. Some trainees of a French circus school were asked to present a different way of acrobatics. One of the students used a fabric to perform their act. This is when Aerial Silks first appeared in a similar way we know it nowadays. Unfortunately their is little known about this first appearance of the aerial silk. In the years of 1959 until 1998
artists started experimenting with the aerial silk as part of their acrobatic performance. Aerial silks became well known b y I s a b e l l e Va u d e l l e a n d I s a b e l l e Chasse.

SILK The fabrics used as silks are very strong and flexible. For the silk a 2-way stretch polyester fabric is used. The fabric can vary in width and elasticity to provide different conditions. The Silk comes in different lengths but usually is quite long to ensure enough fabric for wrapping it around t h e b o d y. It also differers in stretch and
elasticity Low stretch fabrics are mostly used by beginner in Aerial Silks. It is especially use by performers who haven’t developed their climbing technique yet to give more balance. Medium stretch fabrics mostly used by professionals. The different width and length is more a personal preference than a different condition.

CLOTHING For Aerial Silks its good to avoid loose clothing. Loose clothing can create folds which can inhibit your m o v e m e n t i n t h e a i r. Ti g h t f i t t e d l e g g i n g s o r p a n t s are best to ensure a smooth performance. Even thought the clothes should be thigh, they still have to be comfortable and soft. Shorts must be avoided due to risk o f i n j u r y. Cotton fabrics are preferred, silk and synthetics can cause slipperiness and don’t assure a tight hold. Clothes be selected without any metal parts, sippers, belts, or embellishment. This might cause i n j u r y. Jewelry has to be removed before performing on the Silk. Keeping the hair in a bun is also a way to avoid parts getting stuck in the fabric. Performing on the Aerial Silk is best barefoot. Ankles and feet should be free to get a better grip while climbing the rope.

DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION HISTORY OF BOXING Still sometimes called “the manly art of self defense”. A Sport that consist of two competitors that try to get as much hits in towards the other with their fists. Believed to be originated during ancient Greece as one of the games the gods had played on Olympus against each o t h e r. W h i c h t h e n r e s u l t e d i t t o being part of the Olympic Games. The sport increased in popularity during the Roman times where leather bands around their fists were introduced. Including some variations which included metal within the leather which led to possible death during a duel. After the fall of Rome the sport diminished and wasn’t revived until the 18th century in England. Where it gained popularity as the working man’s sport DEFINITION OF BOXING According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary it’s “the art of attack and defense with the fists practiced as a sport”. It was mentioned before in this paper how boxing had started, today it’s practiced between two individuals trying to throw hits at each other with certain techniques. These techniques include a variety of throws such as the (1) Left Jab, a basic left arm punch towards the right direction, which primary target is the opponents nose are and the (2) Right Cross, a basic right arm punch towards the left direction, which primary target is the opponents face area.

REASONS FOR BOXING It is believed that not only is boxing a self defense technique but a full body work out as well. Tr a i n i n g f o r t h e s p o r t a l l o w s the individual to place pent up aggression into a safe and controlled space and the sport does not discriminate on height, a g e , n o r a b i l i t y. Aside from techniques protective gear for the sport has also evolved, partakers are required to wear not just leather padded gloves, but the designated hand wraps as well for the sport. These prevent the players arms not just for bursting from cuts but protects them from the impact of the punches they throw towards the opponent as well. Aside from the f o r e m e n t i o n e d h a n d g e a r, p l a y e r s are also encouraged to use Gum Shields, like most sports, during a fight to avoid any dental trauma.

DESCRIPTION AND CONCEPTION HISTORY OF CAPOEIRA Capoeira is a multifaceted art-form - it is a fight, it is dance, and a g a m e . I t i s f i l l e d w i t h c r e a t i v i t y, g r a c e , s t r e n g t h , h i s t o r y a n d t r a d i t i o n . It’s fluidity is not just combat, but a story told through a collective performance. Capoeira is rooted in the rich cultures brought to Brazil by enslaved A f r i c a n s - i t s h i s t o r y, s t i l l a s u b j e c t o f m u c h d e b a t e . B o t h i t s h i s t o r y a n d legends were passed down orally from former slaves who passed the art to their students. It is through the teachings of masters and a few surviving documents that tell the story of this art-form. Capoeira’s origin dates back to the beginnings of Brazil’s slave trade period, nearly 500 years ago. Throughout almost 500 years of slave trade in Brazil, various tribes from West and Central Africa met and intermingled in the senzalas (slave quarters) and in the quilombos (escape slave nations). From this mix of African cultures came a melding of traditions, rituals, rites of passage, dance, and language. S l o w l y, a n e w A f r o - B r a z i l i a n i d e n t i t y w i t h a d i s t i n c t s e t o f c u l t u r a l practices was born. With this new identity came the development of Capoeira - an art of liberation.

123 CAPOEIRA by Jaclyn Schenardi Photographer and year unknown. .Bahia, Brasil.
The 20th century saw the rise of many legendary mestres (masters) that would changed Capoeira’s wide spread impact. These dedicated capoeiristas (practitioners of Capoeira) worked tirelessly to bring Capoeira into mainstream Brazilian culture and later on the global level. In the late 1920s, a man by the name of Manuel dos Reis Machado AKA Mestre Bimba began to develop a new and more objective Capoeira training method. He was a practitioner of Capoeira and other martial arts and he believed that Capoeira had become too folkloric and dancelike. Mestre Bimba felt its training method was unorganized and needed refining in order to attract more students. With the help of a small group of his students, he began to develop a new and more objective training style. Mestre Bimba created eight partner sequences and used his own distinct rhythms on the berimbau, Capoeira’s lead instrument. Mestre Bimba’s signature training style would later be dubbed, Capoeira Regional.

CAPOEIRA AND MUSIC Music is a critical part of the art and practice of Capoeira. Music is constantly playing during “play” (sparring). Live instruments are played along with song, with musicians and singers in a circle around the fighters — this is called the “Roda.” The instruments are made of materials such as: wood (native African M a r i m b a o r B r a z i l i a n J a c a r a n d a ) , s t o n e , m e t a l , l e a t h e r. The music originated from the Brazilian slave trade, along with the “dance” — until the 1920’s when it was converted to a more declined form of martial arts in Brazil.

“The objective of the modelFIT method is to move with strength and grace through daily activities, to prevent injury and to gain confident presence. Instead of Large movements which rely on momentum created by joints the modelFIT method breaks down these movements down to the small portion in which your muscles are working the hardest. The result is more effective muscle burn without any strain on joints.
Tr a d i t i o n a l b o u t i q u e f i t n e s s routines focus on building powerful muscles with repetitive movements [ Frenetic Cardio ] in a single plane of motion. At modelFIT we move through multiple planes of motion to effectively target small, stabilizing muscle groups all over t h e b o d y. S t r e n g t h e n i n g t h e s e small muscles creates long, lean aesthetic and functional strength. w w w. m o d e l f i t . c o m

Strength training is not a modern invention. Egyptian tombs show men exercising throwing and swinging bags filled with sand and stones. Weightlifting competitions date back to the early Greek civilization. These events led to what later became known as the modern Olympics. Dim lighting has been a hallmark at upscale fitness studios around t o w n . To n e H o u s e f o l l o w e d t h i s trend. During a workout session, the lights are dimmed and a red glow fills the room. Though not scientifically proven, some fitness professionals claim that strategic use of lighting can enhance a workout performance and heighten the overall exercise experience. Darker lighting may
also help with focus and making you feel comfortable. In a recent NYT article, Wilson said that it is an atmosphere of “intensity” what to be aiming for when he decided to hold his workouts in a dimly lit studio under red lights. “It brings out the beast in you — it allows you to unleash your inner athlete.”

DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLIMBING Before modern rock climbing evolved t o b e c o m e w h a t w e k n o w t o d a y, greatest achievement and ambition resulted from “peak-bagging” in mountainous areas. The idea to climb the face of a rock, but not necessarily with the express desire to reach the top of the mountain, was a seemingly absurd concept. Despite this, by the end of the 1800s, rock climbing purely for sport had started to evolve into its own. Three areas have been credited with the birthplace of rock climbing: the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Germany; Lake District, England; a n d t h e D o l o m i t e s , I t a l y. I n t h e U n i t e d States, the earliest mountaineering and climbing innovators had begun to stake first ascent claims on various faces – including: John Muir ’s on-sight free solo of Cathedral P e a k i n t h e Tu o l u m n e M e a d o w s , California (1869). And George Anderson completed the summit of

H a l f D o m e i n Yo s e m i t e , C a l i f o r n i a (1875), as well as the first ascent o f D e v i l s To w e r, W y o m i n g ( 1 8 9 3 ) . By the 1940s, climbing had started to attract greater attention with daring feats such as John Salathé’s attempt at Lost Arrow Spire in Yo s e m i t e Va l l e y. I t w a s t h i s v e r y attempt in 1946 that the first bolt was ever placed in the park. Then in the 1950s, John Gill (now believed to be the “Father of Modern Bouldering”) developed the sport of b o u l d e r i n g i n Yo s e m i t e N a t i o n a l P a r k along with other friends, collectively known as “dirt-bag climbers” w h o w o r e t h e m o n i k e r p r o u d l y. In the 1960s, a great amount of d e v e l o p m e n t t o o k p l a c e i n Yo s e m i t e . With the predominant utilization of aid climbing practices, which employ gear to assist the climber in their ascent, climbers were able to tackle multi-pitch problems spanning many days. This then evolved into traditional (or trad) and clean climbing ethics into the 1970s. Climbers were now driven to move away from the use of bolts, pitons, and other various types of equipment that would cause permanent damage to the rock face. INDOOR CLIMBING Indoor climbing gyms developed as a way for climbers to maintain physique and ability in the colder off-months and help avoid injury in the spring. The very first indoor climbing wall was built at The Ullswater School in Penrith, England in 1960 – constructed of used bricks and stones for hand and foot holds.

TYPES OF CLIMBING Climbing has been categorized into six distinct types. Mountaineering (alpine climbing): Mountaineering is the oldest and most adventurous type of climbing. It is also the most dangerous type and requires a variety of skills to safely make it up and back down a mountain. An alpine climber must be accomplished at climbing on rock, snow and ice, must be aware of natural hazards (rockfall, lightening, avalanche, etc.), must have medical skills, know how to cook at high altitudes, and should also have cultural knowledge of the country and it’s often remote mountain area. Tr a d C l i m b i n g : Tr a d climbing, known also as traditional climbing, involves a climber or group of climbers to place all required gear to protect against falls throughout the route.
All gear placed must be removed w h e n t h e p a s s a g e i s c o m p l e t e . Tr a d Climbing can vary from one pitch (one rope) to a long multi-pitch. Sport Climbing: This form of climbing relies on permanently set anchors, bolts or pitons that are fixed to the rock face. Sport climbing typically embodies a kind of hyper gymnasticlike practice, relying on strength and endurance as opposed to the self-sufficient and adventure seeking character of trad climbing. Bouldering: This style of rock climbing does not involve a rope and normally spans very short routes with what’s called a crash pad set under the c l i m b e r f o r p r o t e c t i o n f r o m i n j u r y. To p R o p e C l i m b i n g : To p r o p i n g i s a s t y l e o f c l i m b i n g that utilizes a rope running from

the belayer at the base of the route through carabiners that are connected to an anchor system at the top of the route; the rope then extends back down to the climber ’s h a r n e s s . To p r o p e a n c h o r s a r e generally built off a large rock, tree, with cams or without, or a combination of the three. Free Solo Climbing: Also known as free soloing, this form of climbing does not use ropes, harnesses or any other protective gear throughout the entirety of ascent. Free soloing relies totally on a c l i m b e r ’ s p h y s i c a l s t r e n g t h , a b i l i t y, and psychological fortitude to avoid what would likely be a fatal fall. GRADING SYSTEM In rock climbing, mountaineering and other climbing practices, climbers give a grade to a route that concisely describes the difficulty and danger in completing the route. Different types of climbing each have their own style of grading and many different nationalities have developed their own distinctive grading systems within the sport. YOSEMITE DECIMAL SYSTEM (YDS) This is a three-part system used for rating the difficulty of walks, hikes, and climbs. The YDS is primarily used by climbers in the United States and Canada. The scale ranges from a 5.0 to a 5.15d. HUECO SCALE The “V” scale, devised by John ‘ Ve r m i n ’ Sherman at Hueco Ta n k s S t a t e H i s t o r i c S i t e i n t h e 1990s, is the most widely used system in North America. The scale ranges from a V0 to a V17.

DESCRIPTION HISTORY The practice of pilates originates from German man named Joseph Pilates who believed in developing exercises that would strengthen the body and the mind. There are currently different techniques and ways to do pilates that differ from studio to studio. Overall, the workout is focused on slow and controlled movements that use the body weight of the person performing them for resistance. It can be done with equipment or no equipment and as practices have evolved people can choose the style they enjoy best. PRINCIPLES While pilates is now sometimes categorized as either “Modern” o r “ C l a s s i c a l / Tr a d i t i o n a l ” P i l a t e s most practices today are based on a set of principles from Joseph Pilates that have been adapted in various forms throughout pilates communities. The main Principles are:

BENEFITS Unlike many popular workouts today such as boot camps and spin classes pilates is a low impact workout. Because pilates was designed to strengthen both the body and the mind there are many benefits to pilates workouts. Modern pilates focuses current exercise studies and research on body movements. Due to the nature of the low impact workouts and science behind them pilates can be done by nearly anyone, ranging from young physically fit people to p e o p l e w h o a r e o l d e r, r e c o v e r i n g from injury or pregnant. EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN THE WUNDAREFORMER At the Wundabar studios the classes are based around the patented Wundareformer. The machine combines many elements of other pilates equipment and puts in one machine. The machine combines the reformer, the wundachair, the ballet bar and the jump-board. Having all these elements in one machine allows for the 45 minute class to access different movements and exercises otherwise not able to be done with just one element.

Wa l k i n g i n t o t h e f r o n t d o o r you are confronted with how small the space is. Half of the space is exposed brick with the large Wundabar logo painted on it. The other walls are mirrored making the space a p p e a r b i g g e r. M a c h i n e s are staggered throughout the middle of the space.
Wa l k i n g i n t o t h e s p a c e light shines through the back windows. The reception desk is in the front of the space with comfortable seating for waiting and locker room to the side of it. Behind reception the space is open with machines up against the wall leaving open studio space.
Pop music plays throughout the small studio space. During the class it was a top 50 play list that played loudly throughout but the instructor was still able to be heard.
When I walked in there was no music playing but during the class the instructor asked what kind o f m u s i c w e p r e f e r, t h e class decided on a similar pop playlist that played from a speaker in the front of the room.
The studio doesn’t have a distinct smell but in general it has a very clean smell to it.
Candles burn on the front desk giving the light scent of eucalyptus throughout the studio.
The studio doesn’t sell food and I just drank water throughout class so there was not much to taste.
I just drank water throughout class so I didn’t taste much but Kind granola bars are available to purchase.
The studio was cool with fans circulating air around. The materials used in the workout vary from hard wood feeling to soft foam, tension from bands. As well as leaving a sore muscle feeling the next day!
The studio was actually quite warm, maybe due to the sun streaming in. The mat used for class was soft and foamy and the weights used were heavy and hard.

Physically - sweat releases toxins and re-energizes our bodies. Mentally - the synchronized breathing relaxes the chatter of the mind and helps to release any blockage of energy flow throughout our bodies. V I N YA S A Y O G A B R E AT H I N G Each movement in a Vinyasa practice is partnered with either an inhalation or an exhalation, creating a flowing link between breath and movement. The poses are sometimes held for several breaths, but when moving between poses, Ujjayi breath provides the connection.
