DESCRIPTION AND CONCEPTION

CONCEPTION The conception of indoor cycling is attributed to Jonathan Goldberg, also known as Johnny G. Johnny G is a former professional cyclist from South Africa. He developed the first stationary bike that felt similar to riding on the road so that he could train indoors. The bike had a fixed gear with a weighted flywheel and an adjustable tension knob. He opened the first cycling studio in California in 1987 and in 1991 he coined the term “Spinning. Crunch gym was one of the f i r s t g y m s i n N e w Yo r k t o l a u n c h t h i s n e w class.

DESCRIPTION Indoor Cycling, or spinning, is a form of high intensity exercise that focuses on endurance and strength, and involves using a special stationary exercise bicycle with a weighted flywheel in a classroom setting. Instructors guide the riders through different workout phases such as the warm-up phase in the start of class, sprints and climbs in the middle of the class, and a cool down phase at the end of the session that includes a two-five minute body stretch. Studios typically incorporate different lighting applications and specially selected music to create an energized atmosphere.

SOULCYCLE Founders of SoulCycle Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice had a shared vision to create a fitness routine that would transform the way people felt about exercise. They wanted a class that was fun and motivating. At SoulCycle participants ride in a dark room lit by grapefruit infused scented candles. What sets SoulCycle apart from other spin classes is its emphasis on music. Each class has a custom play-list that makes each workout feel unique. SoulCycle also taps into the emotional experience of the rider through the music choices and the inspirational words of the instructors. The riders move in unison to the beat of the music and follow the signature choreography of the instructors. PELOTON Peloton opened in 2014, and offered a new fitness concept unseen in other spinning studios. The studio not only offers live classes, but also allows riders to stream classes from any place in the world. This allows people to workout on their own schedule in the comfort of their own home. Peloton marries the relationship between fitness and technology to make every workout effective and addicting. Instead of riding to the beat of the music, at Peloton riders ride at specific resistance numbers to reach a certain RPM, or revolutions per minute. LET’S RIDE L e t ’ s R i d e , l o c a t e d i n P a r i s ’ 11 t h Arrondisement, is a new cycling studio that opened in 2015. Its sexy and trendy atmosphere mimics the demographic of its neighborhood. The neighborhood is popular for its art galleries so they wanted a space with a cool vibe that didn’t look like your typical gym. Let’s Ride offers an intense 45 minute class that is given in the dark with special l i g h t i n g , c h o r e o g r a p h y, a n d m u s i c . Everyone moves to the beat of the music.

EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN

THE BIKE The most important equipment for indoor cycling is the stationary bike. A stationary cycling bike is set up similar to a regular outdoor bicycle in that it has a saddle, handlebars, and pedals. The feature that makes the bike an exercise bike, as apposed to for transportation, is the flywheel. A flywheel is a weighted disk typically at the front of the bike that is attached to the pedals. It stores the energy created when pedaling and releases it as needed. A break is attached to the flywheel that allows the user to apply resistance. The amount of resistance on the bike determines the intensity of the workout.

Many spinning bikes also have a ledge that can store small dumbbells. A five minute arm workout is incorporated into many spinning classes. It is typically 3/4 of the way through the class and studios offer 2, 3, or 5 lb weights. SHOES Spinning bikes require special spinning shoes. The shoes have clips on the bottom that attach to the pedals. This ensures that your foot does not slip around while riding. Most bikes have a universal clip that work with many different shoe brands. Riders can bring their own shoes or use shoes from the studio. FIT | BOOK ONE

SOULCYCLE The SoulCycle bike was design by boutique fitness design firm, Villency Design Group. There are three features on the bike that make it more unique than a typical stationary bike. The first is the extended distance between the handlebars and the seat, this requires riders to use more muscles when riding. The bike also weighs 10-30% more than other stationary bikes to ensure it can w i t h s t a n d a n y s p e c i a l c h o r e o g r a p h y. Lastly the jolts are hand sanded to allow sweat to roll off the frame of the bike, t h u s p r e v e n t i n g r u s t a n d t e a r. T h e b i k e also has a weight holder for arm weights below the saddle. Cost-$2,200

PELOTON The Peloton bike has a 2’x4’ footprint made of carbon steel. What makes this bike unique is the full HD touchscreen that is placed right at the front of the bike above the handlebars. The screen allows riders to view their performance metrics and can also connect to Peloton’s content and user network through WiFi. Unlike most stationary bikes that hum when the wheel spins, the Peloton bike is nearly silent. It is also popular for its smooth-ride feel. The bike also has weight holders below the saddle. PROGRAMMATIC BREAKDOWN ENTRY The entrance to a spinning studio typically has a reception desk, some form of retail space, and seating. The size of these details can vary by studio. LOCKERS Beyond the reception area is the locker area. This is a co-gender space where people can sit, store their belongings, change their shoes, fill their water bottles at the water fountains, and wait for the class to begin. This area is typically right outside the spinning studio and has designated baskets for dirty shoes and towels to be placed when the c l a s s i s o v e r. Some studios, such as FlyWheel Sports, have guests sign in via tablets. There is also staff stationed inside the spinning studio to help riders adjust their bikes and explain to new riders how to ride s a f e l y. MAINTENANCE When the class is in session, a maintenance team helps clean the bathroom and restock towels and products to be used when the class is finished. When the class is complete riders place dirty towels and shoes in specially marked bins. Staff is responsible for cleaning out the bins by organizing the shoes and gathering the dirty towels. There is also a team that cleans the studio after class to prepare for the next class; this can be a 10 minute time frame. The bikes are wiped down and a clean towel is placed o n e v e r y h a n d l e b a r. I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e daily maintenance tasks, the bikes are repaired once a week, or as needed, to make sure all the parts are properly functioning and safe.

STUDIO CLASS On average a spinning studio has about 60 bikes. The morning classes and night classes are the most crowded and are often completely full. This means that the staff must attend to 60 people leaving the studio, and 60 new people entering the studio. There are 8-12 classes offered p e r - d a y. With the popularity of fashionable workout clothes spinning studios have kept up with the trend. Riders can purchase clothing with the studio’s logo on it. The inventory has expanded beyond workout clothing to also include lounge-wear and accessories. Some studios have also partnered with larger fitness clothing companies to produce their products. AMENITIES What attracts people to a certain studio? Sometimes it is not the fitness practice itself but rather the extra benefits that come with it. The customer purchases classes through the studio’s website, and then can browse through the daily schedule and pick which class works best. Each rider has the ability to choose which seat they want Online, depending on where they feel most comfortable in the class and what seats are available. This allows riders to feel a sense of ownership over their bike and the place they chose. Since you pay and register before the class, there is a sense of accountability that pushes riders to attend.

ENDORPHINS Vigorous exercise can stimulate the release of endorphins, a group of hormones, into the bloodstream. This can lead to what is called a "runner's high". At SoulCycle the instructors emphasize that although you might not know anybody in the room you are all part of one group that supports each other to get through the ride. The room is dark and allows each person to feel comfortable going at their own speed, yet at the same time seeing the movements of the silhouettes in front of you encourages you to stay on beat and push through. DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION HISTORY OF INDOOR ROWING The history of dry land rowing dates back to the 4th Century BC in Athens, where new members of the army trained first to learn timing and technique (Hefernan 2016). In 1872, the first indoor rowing m a c h i n e w a s p a t e n t e d b y W. B . C u r t i s , with the intention of supplementing rowers’ off-water training programs (pictured top right). The machine employed a flywheel and ratchet system, but was unable to successfully mimic the motion of outdoor rowing. It also was unable to measure and record its user ’s energy output (“The History of [...]” 2015). The next notable iteration following Curtis’s design employed pneumatic resistance, which used a pressurized gas to create motion. The most popular design was from the N a r a g a n s e t t M a c h i n e C o m p a n y, a n d w a s on the market from 1900-1960 (pictured b o t t o m r i g h t ) . H o w e v e r, a g a i n , t h i s machine failed to record any of its user ’s statistics. In the mid-1900s, John Harrison had finally invented a machine that recorded “human power output with an accuracy range of less than 1%” (Hefernan 2016). The machine used an iron flywheel and mechanical friction break, and became known as the Harrison-Cotton machine. In 1981, Dick and Peter Dreissigacker developed the first Concept2 design, using air resistance and flyweight. It was also the first machine to successfully s i m u l a t e r o w i n g o n t h e w a t e r, a n d to measure its user ’s energy output (Hefernan 2016). In the mid-1980s, U S N a t i o n a l Te a m m e m b e r J o h n D u k e d e s i g n e d t h e W a t e r R o w e r, w h i c h u s e s actual water resistance with its flywheel. These are the two most popular rowing m a c h i n e s u s e d t o d a y.

CITYROW The studio itself houses 19 machines and mats, with room for participants to be able to comfortably get on and off the machine for cross-training exercises on their mats throughout class. There is a mirror at one end of the studio, but not all machines face it; they instead all face the instructor ’s machine in the middle of the studio. As for their reception area, it is the smallest of all three case studies. It has enough room for one person to sit behind the desk and one or two clients to check in. Because of the way the door swings, it is likely to feel full quickly if multiple people were to enter the space at once.

FIT | BOOK ONE

ROW HOUSE Row House has 30 machines, all facing one full mirror wall at the front. These classes seem to place the largest emphasis on form of the three case studies, so the instructor actually circulates throughout the space and makes corrections while they teach. There is enough room for the instructor

to comfortably walk around between machines during a full class. The reception area is large enough for two to three people to comfortably be working behind the desk, and two people to check in at the same time.

MATERIAL, LIGHT & TEXTURE CITYROW CityRow is very light, bright, and neutral. It has the highest ceilings and is located on the corner of its building, so it has two walls of windows with no blinds, making natural light a key component to the overall feel of the space. Most

of its texture comes from the wood and water of the machines, and blue yoga mats themselves. They play music during their classes, and the water from the machines also adds a unique sound to the atmosphere.

HISTORY DESCRIPTION Reformer pilates involves the use of a reformer machine. A reformer is a piece of resistance exercise equipment designed by Joseph Pilates. It consists of a platform that moves back and forth along a carriage. Resistance is provided by the exerciser ’s body weight and by springs attached to the carriage and platform. ORIGINATOR B o r n i n M o n c h e n g l a d b a c h , G e r m a n y, to a gymnast father and naturopath m o t h e r, J o s e p h P i l a t e s h a d a d i f f i c u l t childhood due to numerous ailments as a child, including: asthma, rickets and r h e u m a t i c f e v e r. D e t e r m i n e d t o o v e r c o m e his physical setbacks, he turned to fitness. As he entered adulthood, Pilates continued to expand his knowledge of fitness and health by taking up such activities as skying, diving and boxing. He used physical fitness as a method to alleviate physical ailments and to better both the mind and body - a philosophy he drew from the classical Greek ideal o f m a n b a l a n c e d i n b o d y, m i n d a n d spirit. Pilates believed that bad posture and breathing were sources of poor health and that “good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under perfect control.”

ADVENT OF REFORMER Before WWI, Joseph Pilates was traveling England as a circus performer and boxer and found himself interned as an enemy alien. During his time in England, he noticed the conditions at the internment camps were quite poor and he began imparting his methods of “contrology” on the other enemy aliens. H o w e v e r, m a n y o f t h e c a m p r e s i d e n t s were injured and bedridden. Pilates was insistent that everyone participate in his daily exercises and began rigging the hospital beds with springs to allow those restricted to the beds be able to exercise while lying down and using resistance from the springs. These rigged hospital beds were the first step in the invention of the pilates reformer and cadillac machines used t o d a y. BRINGING PIL ATES TO AMERICA After WWI, Pilates decided to emigrate to the United States where began living a n d t e a c h i n g h i s m e t h o d s i n N e w Yo r k C i t y. H e s o o n m e t h i s w i f e , C l a r a a n d together they opened the first pilates studio called “Body Contrology Studio.” Many of his first students were dancers as they found Body Contrology a great method to overcome dance injuries. Many of Pilates’ students went on to open their own studios.

The entrance for the Karen Lord Pilates Movement studio is directly off the street. Once the client has entered the space, the smell of peppermint wafts and pleasantly awakens the senses. Peppermint is known to relieve stress while also energizing - a similar affect of pilates. Behind the reception desk are white frames containing pirate influenced pilates tee shirts. The stark contrast between the white walls, desk and other furniture really make the minimal black accent pieces pop. This space is crisp, airy with a touch of a rebel attitude.

Powerhouse KL has a much more masculine design compared to Case Study I and II which is apparent in the choice of materials. The floors are concrete, the walls are made of concrete brick and there are black steel beams for structural support.

There are two entrances at the Powerhouse KL Pilates Studio both lead from another building. This makes the reception area quite dark due to the lack of natural lighting.

CASE STUDY I NEW YORK PIL ATES SOHO STUDIO The fresh, airy feeling o f t h e N e w Yo r k P i l a t e s studio continues into the studio space where the practice takes place. The reformer machines are evenly spaced apart allowing users to move through the space smoothly while choosing their machine. The instructor closes the sliding glass doors during class and moves between the reformers while describing a narrative of positions. The exposed brick has been painted white to maintain the fresh feeling throughout this space. The storage space for the smaller pieces of equipment are located against the back wall as to not cause visual clutter on the brick walls. Both studio spaces are flooded with natural light because of the large windows. Sheer white curtains cover the windows to provide privacy without blocking natural light from entering the space. A purple light is illuminating the room from the rafters making the entire space glow a soft purple.

KAREN LORD PIL ATES MOVEMENT In the Karen Lord Pilates Movement Studio the stark contrast between white and black is present throughout the studio space. The reformers and pilates towers are all equally spaced and pushed against opposite walls. The reformers all face individual mirrors so users can watch themselves throughout the practice. Having individual mirrors as opposed to one large mirror wall further promotes the noncompetitive philosophy of pilates. Each person is encouraged to improve while not comparing themselves to others. The bright light comes from hanging bulbs from the ceiling that have been dipped in a metallic finish to diffuse the direct light. The white and black starkness of the space demand much more energy and eagerness to work out than what was previously shown in Case Study I. This room is designed to get the clients energized and prepared for a great workout.

CASE STUDY II

CASE STUDY III POWERHOUSE KL PIL ATES STUDIO Powerhouse KL Pilates Studio has a much more unique studio space than both Case Study I and II. The most significant design feature of this studio is a rotating partition which allows the space to transform into two separate studio spaces - one side with reformer pilates machines and the other with space for mat work and/or THX suspension exercise from the steel beams above. The partition can be moved quite easily by hand. The flooring material changes to a dark stained wood in the studio space to provide a softer surface for workouts, compared to the concrete in the reception. The studio space is flooded with natural light during the day which keeps the clients motivated.

THE SPORT OF RUNNING Running is one of the oldest competitive sports dating back to the ancient Greek Olympic Games where, in 776 B.C., the first and only event was the sprint distancing about 200 meters or what was referred to during the time as a stadion, an ancient Greek unit of measure. In 720 B.C., a long distance race was added to the Olympic games known as a Dolichos which approximated at anywhere from three to six miles long. When the first Modern Olympics Games took place in 1896, running was not to be left out. The first modern Olympic games included over 12 categories within track and field.

Although track and field dates back to Ancient Roman times, treadmill running h a s a s h o r t e r h i s t o r y. THE ORIGINAL TREADMILL The first treadmill was not a treadmill at all but a tread wheel used during the Roman Empire as a crane. It was operated by men who would walk directly in the wheel of the machine. This technology continued to evolve and in the early 1800s, the horse treadmill was i n v e n t e d f o r a s o u r c e o f r e l i a b l e p o w e r. TREADMILLS FOR EXERCISE In the 1920s, treadmill for exercise made its debut. Restricted to the rich and powerful, these first indoor treadmills were expensive, manual, and made of wooden slats which were hard on the joints. By 1934, treadmills had gone through a substantial upgrade, fitted with instead of wood, making it easier on the joints.

Bruce developed the medical treadmill. The patient would wear an ECG (electrocardiography) device that was hooked up to the treadmill. This made way to the first stress test that we know o f t o d a y, u s e d t o m e a s u r e c a r d i o v a s c u l a r performance.

The fitness industry would never be the same again as people no longer needed to even leave their home to get exercise. The Pacemaker 600 made way for a multitude of other cardiovascular workout machines found in most standard gyms t o d a y.

T H E PAC E M A S T E R 600 As awareness of the health benefits of exercise, particularly running gained momentum, mechanical engineer William Staub was busy inventing the first treadmill meant for use at home. He put this machine on the market through Aerobics Inc. as the Pacemaster 600.

WHY THE TREADMILL? Gym goers often term the treadmill as a torturing device, which ironically enough, was actually the case back in the early 1800s when it was used to punish prisoners. If the treadmill is so torturous, why do so many people still run on the treadmill? Running is the oldest form of FIT | BOOK ONE

cardiovascular exercise and one of the most common forms. It does not necessarily require any equipment nor does it take much thinking or prior skill. Yo u s i m p l y g o o u t s i d e a n d r u n . S o t h e question is not “why run?” but “why r u n o n t h e t r e a d m i l l ? ” I n r e a l i t y, i t i s not quite so simple. There are many factors that can interfere with outdoor running. Although some people have no problem throwing on a rain jacket and running through a drizzle, extreme weather conditions can present a hazard to outdoor runners. There is also a consistency factor in treadmill running. Everything can be controlled on the machine and runners can track exactly how fast they are going and choose an incline they prefer to run on. There are many running workouts that can be done b o t h i n s i d e a n d o u t s i d e . H o w e v e r, i t i s difficult to accurately track speed while running outdoors. Although there are GPS devices that can help determine running speed, many are inaccurate. Another benefit of exercising indoors is that cardio and strength training can be knocked out all under one roof. Most treadmills live in a gym or a home surrounded by other workout equipment making cross training convenient and accessible . WHAT RUNNERS WANT A primary component of running is distraction. Runners are either distracting themselves from the stress and anxiety of everyday life or distracting themselves from the movement of running itself. Running outside in nature, the surroundings are constantly changing with seasons and alternating terrain. Other runners participate in races, giving them a sense of place and motivation. At the gym, treadmill running is an isolated activity with stagnant surroundings. The headphones go in, the TV is on, and the runner runs and runs, legs flying, eyes glued to the screen trying to pass the time with as much distraction as possible from the burning sensation in their chest and aching legs. After leading group runs outdoors for several years, the challenges of outdoor running became more frustrating. Deborah decided to take the fun of running outside to an indoor setting with her first running studio in the East Village in Manhattan. The Mile High Run Club features one main studio with 36 numbered treadmills set up on shock resistant flooring. Upon entering the studio, eyes go immediately to the logo merchandise lining the walls of the check in area marking off a small s e c t i o n d e d i c a t e d t o r e t a i l . To t h e l e f t of reception, runners have the option to make a purchase from a selection of healthy hydrations and snacks before checking in and heading to the locker rooms. Other programs and amenities within the facility include showers within the male and female locker rooms, a co-ed locker area for quick storage, toiletries, and towels. The studio has

MYSTRYDE Not long after the Mile High Run Club opened its doors, Becca Skudder was looking for a solution to amp up her monotonous treadmill runs during wintry days in Boston. She started trying out cycling classes and decided that although she enjoyed the energy of group cycling classes, she would rather be running. She decided to start MyStryde which began offering classes in late 2015. Although Becca has been leading running groups outside for quite some time, one thing she also noticed was that some runners would fall behind. It was difficult for runners of different levels to a l l r u n t o g e t h e r. THE GAMERS’ RUN In 2013, Nike started a campagne to motivate runners in Greater China. The campagne was named “Let the R u n Te l l y o u W h y ” a n d c i r c u l a t e d a video featuring Chinese runners of all different ages and backgrounds running and defying tradition and social norms. Faces of the campagne included female students, homosexual male runners, a blind woman, children, and a 74 year old Chinese grandfather who ran under someone else’s name when he was told that he was too old to participate in a marathon. Just before the 2014 Hong Kong Marathon, Nike pumped up the campaign and hired XEX, an interactive media design group, to create an installation roofed under a large truck. The goal was to create an interactive experience that allowed participants to run on a virtual track of the Hong Kong Marathon. The truck was parked on 25 locations along the Hong Kong Marathon route. The installation was set up as a quick stop for runners. training for the

marathon and therefore eliminating the need for formal programs such as changing rooms or showers. The run itself was based on one of the three Hong Kong Marathon tracks which were sped up to make it a quick run with just enough time for the runner to get a t a s t e o f r u n n i n g i n a v i r t u a l r e a l i t y. T h e location of the truck was posted on social media and runners and non runners alike would be lining up before the truck even arrived. Upon entering the truck, the participant would “check in” on a digital screen on the treadmill by selecting the reason why they are running from a list of options. At the end of the run, the runners would have a photo snapped of them and pick up a printed copy on their way out. They also have the option to post it directly to social media.

Material, light and texture are all components that set a mood within a s p a c e . D e b o r a h Wa r n e r m a d e i t a p o i n t to create mood at the Mile High Club through light. The goal was to bring a taste of the Colorado running trails where so many professional runners train. Deborah brought in lighting designers that created installations at Burning Man to set the stage at her running studio. The studio itself is all white with mirrors throughout the space. The color is brought in through changing light that flood the room meant to mimic colors of sunrise and sunset in a way that also adds vibrancy and energy to the space. Other parts of the Mile High Club including locker rooms and reception have the same bright white walls accented with wood to bring a sense of nature to the space.

“My aim was to make the experience of running at MHRC as good as running outside, or at least make it a really fun experience notes Deborah.

LET THE RUN TELL YOU WHY MATERIAL LIGHT & TEXTURE T h e N i k e L e t t h e R u n Te l l Yo u W h y mobile campaign was meant to create a virtual running experience on one of the three marathon tracks of Hong Kong. In order to achieve this, XEX used a 4 meter long sound synchronized LED mirror on either side of the wall of the truck creating a sense of infinite space. Projectors were placed on the ceiling of the truck and a graphic video of the track was projected onto the mirrors in front of the runner to create a 3D gaming environment. The LED lights were meant to further enhance the feeling of gaming. The treadmill itself was equipped with a customized screen that added an interactive experience through touch.
