305 FITNESS TURNING YOUR WORKOUT INTO A PA R T Y

305 Fitness was conceived as an alternative way to boost your cardio. The class combines rhythmic dance moves with aerobic exercise, to create a workout class that feels more like a night out at the club than a class at the gym.

SPOTLIGHT

LIGHTING: 305 Fitness takes the unique approach of making the lighting a main component of your workout experience. Each class has a d i f f e r e n t c o l o r, r h y t h m a n d selection of lights that change with the music and timing of a class. These spot lights are located around the perimeter and evenly spaced on the ceiling to maximize the color and effect. The idea came from the Miami dance clubs and the desire to bring the club-like feel to one’s workout. REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

The earliest evidence of boxing dates back to Egypt around 3000 BC. The sport was introduced to the ancient Olympic Games by the Greeks in the late 7th century BC, when soft leather thongs were used to bind boxers’ hands and forearms for protection. Ballet’s origins grew out of the Renaissance court cultures of Italy and France. When Catherine de Medici of Italy married the French King Henry II, she introduced early dance styles into court life in France. Dancers would perform at the royal courts — and then invite the audience members to participate. “It was a dance that was done by courtiers and kings and princes at court in social situations,” she says. “It was not a theatrical art set off from social life.” The first ballet dancers did not wear tutus or dance in satin shoes, but they did formalize the footwork patterns — known as first, second, third, fourth a n d f i f t h p o s i t i o n — t h a t a r e s t i l l u s e d t o d a y. “There is a disassociation of the body where the hands and feet are performing different movements at the same time. Both sports can be ritualistic-you have to tie laces, tape fingers and toes. They can be meditative-you can only think about what comes next.” (Spooner and Dugas, 2012) “Dancers and boxers are both in some sense physicalizations, outer echoes of the innermost reaches of mental discipline, the pride and grit that help produce the highest efficacy of movement in the shortest space of time. Boxing is often considered to be a brutal and dangerous sport, while ballet is commonly viewed as a graceful and ethereal performance art. In fact, there are many overlapping qualities of the two disciplines. Both are solo sports; they lack a team dynamic and require self-reliance. The footwork of a boxer can be likened to dance. Both require incredible precision, rhythm, balance and tempo.

Both ballet and boxing require binding and lacing. The boxer must wrap her wrist and hands for protection. The material of the wrap is made of either cotton or gauze. After the boxer has sufficiently wrapped her hands, she must then lace and tie the glove to the appropriate tightness. In ballet, a similar practice occurs, but on the feet. Many ballet dancers use tape to protect their toes. Their toes are often bloody and blistered from the wooden cap on the pointe shoes. After taping their toes, the shoes must be laced and tied.

RESISTANCE BANDS Elastic resistance bands are commonly used in both fitness and rehabilitation facilities. They are easily stored, transported, and are lightweight and inexpensive. Elastic resistance does not rely on gravity and supplies continuous tension to the muscle. As the range of motion on the band increases, so too, does the resistance.

Coss Marte began to take his health seriously while behind bars. Convicted on a drug kingpin charge, Marte, now 30, had been told by prison doctors that his cholesterol levels were dangerously high — and that he’d likely die before his seven-year sentence was completed. After six months of continuous planks, jumping jacks, dips and push-ups, he had lost 70 pounds, and was healthier than e v e r. Marte began leading workouts in prison to help the other inmates get in shape, too. Con Body also hosts collaborative marathons such as the Prison Break 5k runstreet marathon spanning from Manhattan’s Lower East Side across the bridge to Dumbo, Brooklyn, and a final workout with ConBody founder Coss Marte on the ConBody Prison Bus. The 5K challenge included 3.1 miles of running the NYC streets and 5 w o r k o u t s t a t i o n s a l o n g t h e w a y. A t each checkpoint, ConBody trainers led different prison-style bootcamp exercises. The final workout was on the pull-up bar at the ConBody bus.

As a marketing effort, Con Body hosts marathons. For this they have designed a ConBody Correctional bus, where clients can participate in their prison style workout on the go. It is a good opportunity for parties, as 20 people can take the class at once. The bus has workout equipment like chin up bars on its exterior and presents a contrast from the solitary confinement like brick and mortar store. The inside of the bus is devoid of any seats and has poles going from the ceiling to floor and loose w o r k o u t m a t s o n t h e f l o o r. I t a l l o w s y o u to literally workout on the go.

The prison bus stands right in front of an old and rugged building behind which hides a small signage for the studio. On entering the building, one has to take an elevator to the basement to reach the studio and is welcomed by mugshots of “prisoners rendered in a dark yellow light.

Reception Desk Back Side vs. Front Side

As a new client walks in the studio, they talk to the receptionist and get a ‘before’ mugshot. Then they are required to remove their shoes and proceed to the workout studio. The flooring changes from concrete to mat, indicating the path of entrance into the bootcamp space. The entrance feels cold and hectic, especially because one can see people doing strenuous workouts in the adjacent studio.

In an ideal situation, each student should get about 70 inches space in width and in length to be able to fully stretch out their bodies sideways and not bump into their neighbors.

Since the bootcamp exercises are heavily based on planks and push-ups, one often finds themselves looking a t t h e f l o o r. T h i s g i v e s u s a design opportunity to redesign the way these rubber mats interlock to create an impactful aesthetic.

MATERIALS & TEXTURES

Con Body Studio, Saks, Fifth Avenue, NY

The materials and textures used in the interiors are raw and cold. They truly mimic a prison cell with their unfinished colors and cold surfaces. The lighting is white in most places, which further brings out uneasiness and does not encourage a person to stay in the studio any longer than required. The atmosphere really gets you down to business and out of the studio as soon as the workout is completed.

The interactive component is to express the feeling of being confined in a space where you have to make a physical effort of raising arms in order to be able to look outside. The experience at Con Body Studio was quite similar to this where the surroundings were suppressing in not just aesthetic terms but also the humidity and air temperature. But the feel good moment is realized at the end of the class where you have given the workout your hundred percent and are pretty sure o f t h e p o s i t i v e r e s u l t s o n y o u r b o d y.

CONCEPTION I n t h e I n d u s Va l l e y, a r c h a e o l o g i s t s discovered evidence of meditation in wall art dating from approximately 5,000 to 3,500 BCE. The images depict people sitting in what many of us would recognize as meditation postures. In other words, the figures sat on the ground with crossed legs, hands resting on their knees, and their eyes slightly narrowed but not completely closed. There are also descriptions of meditation techniques found in Indian scriptures dating back around 3,000 years ago.

As the centuries passed, most of the world’s great religions adopted the basic concepts of meditation. Though the methods may vary from culture to culture, people across the globe believe meditation is an essential cornerstone of spiritual development. In fact, all of the major religions have incorporated various forms of meditation i n o n e f o r m o r a n o t h e r, p a r t i c u l a r l y i n their mystical branches.

In the 1960’s there was an explosion of interest in meditation fueled by Maharishi M a h e s h Yo g i t e a c h i n g T r a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation. In Judaism, there’s Kabala, which is, in a n u t s h e l l , a m e d i t a t i v e f i e l d o f s t u d y. T h e use of meditation in modern Judaism, “hitbodedut” (hit-ba-dee-doot) is one of the best known meditative practices.

Islam has two forms of meditation: The more mainstream that is mentioned in the Q u r ’ a n ( o r K o r a n ) i s “ Ta f a k k u r ” ( t a a - f a a k kur), which is contemplative meditation and reflection upon the universe. The second, less accepted and more mystical form, is Sufism.

H I S TO RY: Ballet Barre became popular around the 1970s. It is based on the technique of a G e r m a n d a n c e r, L o t t e B e r k . After injuring her back, Lotte got the idea of combining her ballet bar routines with h e r t h e r a p y. T h i s g a v e b i r t h t o B a l l e t Barre. In 1959 she opened The Lotte Berk Studio. O n e o f h e r A m e r i c a n s t u d e n t s , Ly d i a Bach, was so impressed with the technique that she bought the rights to Lotte’s name and in 1971 opened The Lotte Berk Method exercise studio in Manhattan.

POP PHYISIQUE - BOWERY

ABOUT: The first branch of Pop Physique was started by Jennifer Williams, a former professional ballet dancer and Pilates Instructor and her husband Deric,a brand developer in Silver Lake. In 2010, Pop Physique opened a second location in Studio City and its third location in Mar Vista in LA. It is now present in thirteen locations, including two in NYCN o M a d a n d B o w e r y.

PA R S O N S S C H O O L O F D E S I G N I D S T U D I O 3

“Pop Physique’s concept is simple: the sexiest, most efficient, coolest workout at the best price.” Jennifer cared about good style, good interior design, good music and a workout that used dance principles. “I get to teach, do teacher training, design spaces, design clothes, and marketing campaigns. It is deeply rewarding.” -Jennifer Williams Their interior clearly displays the influence of pop culture. They use funky wallpapers, neon lighting and subtle provocative messages. The interior of the space is designed in a way that makes their clients want to take photos and post them on social media, making it a big part of their m a r k e t i n g s t r a t e g y.

IT IS NOT M E R E LY EXERCISE, I T I S A R T.

THE SESSION: It is a one hour ballet barre-based class. Pop Physique takes the original, chic Lotte Berk concept to a modernized level that fits into every lifestyle. A typical class starts with a quick warm up for the whole body that includes planks and pushups. It progresses into light weights to tone the u p p e r b o d y, t h e n m o v e s t o t h e b a l l e t b a r r e f o r stretching and intense lower body workout. The abdominal muscles are worked throughout the class. The class ends with a final stretch.

DARKNESS HEAT HIP HOP UNIQUE EXPERIENCE T h e a t m o s p h e r e c o n s t r u c t e d b y t h i s Yo g a class, combined with Hip Hop music playing in a high quality sound system, plus the darkness and heat of the room is really capable to take you to a special experience that feels very different than a more traditional practice. The idea behind it is to take the practitioner away from distractions, and keep him/her focused in their own body movements, so he/she can pay total attention to him/her self. And it really works! What is fascinating about this Studio is that with few resources and simple solutions the design of the space has built a great and unique fitness experience.

DOCUMENTATION To p a r t i c i p a n t s w a s p r o v i d e d l i g h t e d candles. They were asked to warm their hand with the candle flame and close their eyes, while a soft hip hop music was playing. The idea was to reproduce the experience that the yoga practitioners have in class.
