BARRE: THE EXERCISE, THE BRANDS

TONING UP Originally a trend in the 1970s, the barre workout, first started by injured ballerina Lotte Berk, is now a popular exercise for women who are looking to develop lean muscle. While the routines and classes vary by studio, the exercise takes an approach that references ballet. Some classes are similar to yoga, while others are more cardio or dance focused. In addition to the essential ballet barre, the workout involves such accessories as a toning ball, floor mat, free weights and exercise bands. Just as the style of barre class varies by studio, so too does the design of the space. Some studios include hardwood floors, while others are carpeted; some include shelving for all the equipment used in class, while others find ways to store

the balls and bands on the barre itself. Women throughout the United States have become enthusiasts of the practice as barre studios are popping up all over t h e c o u n t r y, a s w e l l a s m a n y o f f e r i n g classes online. A barre class can be both exhausting and rewarding, as one works their arms, thighs, glutes, and abs all in one session.

CASE STUDY ONE: XTEND BARRE BOCA RATON Marketed as a combination of Pilates and dance, Xtend Barre offers specialized classes for brides, yogis, runners, and new mothers, in addition to basic barre offerings. Some of the locations appear to be targeted towards mothers s p e c i f i c a l l y, w h i l e t h e e n t i r e b r a n d exudes a sense of sophistication through marketing materials that include women in make-up and coordinated clothing, as well as in the interior design of their spaces. CASE STUDY TWO: PURE BARRE VIRGINIA BEACH Proclaimed “the largest, most established barre franchise in the nation, with more t h a n 3 7 5 s t u d i o s a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y, Pure Barre was first started in 2001 by dancer and choreographer Carrie R e z a b e k D o r r. B y 2 0 0 9 t h e b r a n d w a s a franchise and women everywhere were thrilled with the quick results they experienced from the workout. In comparison to other barre brands, the brand voice of Pure Barre is perhaps less developed than others, as such a large diversity of ownership limits the consistency in design of every studio. But with an active blog and an ever growing collection of devoted clients, the lifestyle that Pure Barre promotes is getting stronger class after class.

CASE STUDY THREE: PHYSIQUE 57 FINANCIAL DISTRICT First opened on 57th Street in Manhattan, Physique 57 now offers its “Interval Overload” practice in studios t h r o u g h o u t t h e c i t y, a s w e l l a s i n s t u d i o s in the Hamptons, Los Angeles, Dubai, and Bangkok. With a refined website, a color palette that includes grays, blues and whites, as well as a heavy emphasis on inspirational quotes, I had high hopes for my first experience at the studio. H o w e v e r, w h i l e t h e w o r k o u t w a s i n t e n s e , I was unimpressed by the studio itself. A unique floor plan that includes two women’s locker rooms, no water fountain, a n d a c a r p e t e d f l o o r, h a d m e w o n d e r i n g how the brand became so successful.

Pure Barre Virginia Beach Equipment Storage Photo: HerCampus.com

It’s interesting to note the different approaches that studios take to storing barre equipment. While Xtend Barre and Physique 57 have prioritized storage of floor mats and free weights, equipment storage at Pure Barre is not as important. At Pure Barre in Virginia Beach, toning balls are stored in baskets and mats a r e s t a c k e d o n t h e f l o o r. B u t t h e r e a r e hooks for resistance bands at Pure Barre, something that Physique 57 did not include in the design of their FiDi location, as resistance bands and toning balls merely rest on the barre. But hooks are used at Physique 57 as a means of storing floor mats which hang on the wall i n s t e a d o f b e i n g s t a c k e d o n t h e f l o o r. I n comparison, at Xtend Barre Boca Raton it seems every piece of equipment has a place within the built-in shelving on the back wall of the studio.

MATERIAL, LIGHT & TEXTURE

photo: lipsticklifestyle.com

Many barre studios are designed with carpeted studios, taking into account the various movements that clients do throughout each class, many of which include lying on the ground or standing on tip toes. Even with carpeted flooring, h o w e v e r, c l i e n t s a r e r e q u i r e d t o w e a r socks. My own experience with the carpeted floor at Physique 57 had me thinking about how much less sanitary a carpeted floor is than a hardwood floor; though I’m sure it added a layer of comfort.

Natural light can also impact one’s exercise experience. It’s interesting to note the difference between Pure Barre Virginia Beach, in which the reception and retail is open to natural light and the studio itself receives minimal natural light, and that of Physique 57 FiDi in which all the natural light is directed to the studios and the reception and retail a r e a s a r e l i t a r t i f i c i a l l y. X t e n d B a r r e Boca Raton has a great mix of both, with reception/retail and the primary studio facing the street and therefore lit almost entirely by natural light.

BOULDERING

P H Y S I C A L P R O B L E M S O LV I N G

Bouldering is a form of climbing that is performed without ropes. It is a short climb but tricky bouldering "problems"(a route, or sequence of moves), which requires balance, technique, strength and your brain.

Bouldering has different solutions for each person depending on your body and strengths. Some people really try to challenge hard "problems" to built their stamina and increase finger strength, while other people just want to exercise their body with an easy "problem". The key to solving each problem is within the positions of your body when you climb, how you manage to put your feet and hands on a wall or techniques that climbers acquire for bouldering.

SOCIAL FORM OF CLIMBING

A WORKOUT FOR BODY AND MIND

Since bouldering does not use any ropes and there is no limit of accommodations for the number of people on a section wall, it is likely that you work with s e v e r a l p e o p l e t o g e t h e r. F o r e x a m p l e , while one person is climbing, other people have lots of chat on the ground as everyone talks about how they achieve their problems. Even though you may have never met anyone before, when you participate in the sport for the first time, you will get to know many people throughout bouldering.

Bouldering is a great activity that helps y o u r m u s c l e s d e v e l o p a l l o v e r y o u r b o d y. Also, unlike other forms of exercise, it is really fun to workout. Besides, it is a good way to stimulate your brain, thinking about how to solve the various b o u l d e r i n g p r o b l e m s . Yo u c a n a l s o f o r g e t about your stress and clear it up after your workout. The more technique you learn, the more ways you can approach the sport.

THE HISTORY OF CLIMBING THE ORIGIN

Rock climbing began as a sport in the mid-1800s. In the 1960s, John Gill (1937-Present), who was an American mathematician and a c l i m b e r, p u s h e d t h e s p o r t f o r w a r d . He achieved this by inventing a scale of difficulty for particular movements and body positions, which linked to a new idea. His idea was bouldering that navigates a specific sequence of holds, at the same time, he emphasized the importance of strength training to acquire technical skills. Gill also developed a closedended rating system that classifies different levels and difficulties of the sport.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF EQUIPMENT

In the 1980s, training tools were further developed: Chalk, Bouldering mats and artificial climbing walls. Chalk is a method to keep hands dry in order to prevent from sliding. Bouldering mats, also referred as "Crash pads", help to absorb impact from failing. Indoor climbing walls made bouldering possible to be more popular as the sport grew and new bouldering area were spread throughout Europe and the United States. In fact, more and more athletes started participating in bouldering competition and c o m m u n i t y. T h e s p o r t i s e a s y t o s t a r t and all you need is just a pair of climbing shoes, a mat, chalk and a bag, as well as a brush to clean your hands.

For example, some climbing gyms use a VB grade to indicate beginner problems.

COLOR TAPE

Climbing gyms often feature multiple problems within the same section of wall. In the US the most common method to navigate the intended route for a particular problem is by placing colored tape next to each hold—for example, holds with red tape would indicate one bouldering problem, while green tape would be used to set off a different problem in the same area. Across much of the rest of the world problems and grades are usually designated by using a set color of plastic hold to indicate a particular problem. For example, green may be v0-v1, blue may be v2v3 and so on. Setting via color has certain advantages, the most notable of which are that it makes it more obvious where the holds for a problem are, and that there is no chance of tape being accidentally kicked off o f f o o t h o l d s . S m a l l e r, r e s o u r c e poor climbing gyms may prefer taped problems because large, expensive holds can be used in multiple routes simply by marking them with more than one color of tape.

Building up speed and endurance, keeping the body in optimum health.

S PAT I A L R E Q U I R E M E N T S: FLOOR AREA & CEILING HEIGHT 1. The amount of floor area required depends on three variables: the number of participants normally expected to take part in activities, the age of participants and the type of activity envisaged. 2. The dance studio should consist of 100 square feet per student. If the studio also serves as a performance space, it should be at least 4,800-5,000 square feet. 3. A ceiling height of 20-24 feet is ideal, but 16 feet is the minimum height. There should be no posts or columns in the interior space.

WOODEN FLOORING 1. Wooden, sprung floors are the ideal type for a dance studio. 2. Smooth, buffered and warm floors. Many dancers dance barefoot and so its important that the floor glides and is not dangerous for the feet. 3.The studio needs to have a softened floor with air and foam underneath is important for all sorts of dance forms. This protects the dancers bodies from the impact of jumps, falls etc. 4 . I f t h e f l o o r i s c o l d o r absorbs the bodily temperature,it become s a constant harm to the body that needs to remain warm while dancing.

LIGHTING 1.Overhead lighting should be soft and florescent and evenly spread out across the room. 2.Windows can be great for letting in bright, natural light, but make sure they are positioned higher up on the walls so as not to be distracting to the dancers as direct sunlight on the dancer may be a distraction. 3. If windows are to feature, they may be best in opaque glass or located above eye height.
