DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION WHAT IS IT? Aquacycling is a form of indoor cycling o r s p i n n i n g t h a t t a k e s p l a c e i n w a t e r. A mechanism with pedals is placed in a pool of warm water about waist high and the cyclist pedals against the natural r e s i s t a n c e o f w a t e r. T h e p e d a l i n g c a n b e combined with other types of exercise such as yoga, running and strength exercises to expand the workout, while retaining a main focus on the cycling. Because water is natural and makes u p m o r e t h a n 5 0 % o f t h e h u m a n b o d y, emerging oneself in a pool of water is seen as the most effective type of fitness for an overall healthy body experience. Exercising in water stimulates the mind and body and is the most efficient type of fitness. Aquacycling is already popular across Europe and is making its way to the United States by the opening of the f i r s t s t u d i o i n N e w Yo r k C i t y i n 2 0 1 3 .

WHY DO WE DO IT? There are many mental and physical benefits of Aquacycling. The benefits stem from the combination of intense cardio and high resistance of spinning with the minimal physical pressure on muscles and joints from swimming. Because pedaling in water provides a naturally high resistance that is completely controlled by the cyclist, i t l i m i t s o v e r e x e r t i o n o f t h e b o d y. T h i s concept introduces us to nine more benefits to Aquacyling.

Blood Flow and Circulation: The moving water benefits physical performance by increasing blood flow and lymphatic circulation. B o d y To n i n g a n d S c u l p t i n g : T h e pedaling combined with water generates a constant physical lymphatic massage which stimulates and breaks down fatty cells reducing the appearance of varicose veins and cellulite. The pressure of the water activates the muscles and increases blood flow to train and mobilize the fat. The elimination of fat through circulation reduces cellulite and improves skin tone. Minimal Soreness: The pressure of the water and increased amount of circulating oxygen minimizes lactic acid build up in muscles. Minimal lactic acid and the limited impact on joints, muscles and bones, reduces n e x t d a y, p o s t e x e r c i s e s o r e n e s s a n d muscle fatigue. Flexibility: The human body is 1/10 i t s w e i g h t u n d e r w a t e r, s o t h e a d d e d buoyancy allows the joints to move at a wider range of motion. The increased support of the water not o n l y r e d u c e s s t r e s s o n t h e b o d y, b u t results in increased overall flexibility to prevent future injury in other types of exercise.

under water retains a consistence high resistance because when pedaling stops, movement stops. When movement stops, there is no way to build momentum. Therefore, the speed and intensity is completely controllable. 7. R e s p i r a t o r y B e n e f i t s : H e a r t b e a t frequency is 10% lower in the water then on land, so it takes longer to become out of breathe. High intensity plus low heart rate increases endurance. Increased endurance has a long term effect on respiratory health. In addition, the humidity of the water opens up the lungs and makes it easier to breathe.

8. I m p r o v e s E n e r g y a n d R e d u c e s

Stress: The high resistance of Aquacycling makes it a high intensive exercise which has been proven to impact energy and stress levels. More active people have less stress, i m p r o v e d m o o d s , m o r e e n e r g y, b e t t e r sleeping habits and overall better mental health. 9. U n i v e r s a l E x e r c i s e : D u e t o t h e low physical impact, but respiratory benefits, Aquacycling is Ideal for all ages and fitness levels. It is highly recommended for pregnant women because of the gentle and soothing q u a l i t i e s o f t h e w a t e r.

Aqua is the first Aquacycling studio in the United States and is located i n T r i B e C a i n N e w Yo r k C i t y. I t w a s created in 2013 by Esther Gauthier after she attended a class on a trip home to Paris. She has successfully created clean and comfortable facilities to ensure that everyone that walks through the door leaves feeling better then when they walked in. Aqua Studio offers a few different services, placing a large emphasis on aquacycling classes, which they hold on the bottom floor of their studio. Classes hold up to 1 4 p e o p l e , p l u s a n i n s t r u c t o r, a n d l a s t 45 minutes.

AQUA SLIM

Aqua Slim is an exercise studio in Paris, France, that focuses their training solely on aqua fitness. They have taken the approach of individual cycling pods in individual rooms to promote a private exercise experience. The type of cycling equipment chosen for this studio has enabled cyclists to combine aquacycling with other types of underwater fitness including the ability to run, elliptical, and climb steps. They strive to make aqua fitness not only a body sculpting and physically comfortable exercise but a way to take advantage of the extreme natural r e s i s t a n c e o f w a t e r. E x e r c i s i n g i n w a t e r means the cyclist can build strength and burn the maximum amount of calories in

the minimum amount of time compared to exercising on land. The studio is minimal and focused on functionality by not offering any a d d i t i o n a l s e r v i c e s . T h i s w a y, t u r n o v e r of business is high and people can come into the studio for a 30 minute session and leave. The space is small and there are only five machines available to use, not allowing any additional space for customers to stay for any other types of activities.

Hydrofit is a fitness studio in London, England that uses aqua cycling as a fitness tool. They refer to their studio as a “slimming centre” instead of a gym or fitness center because aqua cycling is just one of the few services they offer towards better health, fitness and wellness. They believe that aqua cycling in their individual cabins will help anyone lose weight, reshape and r e j u v e n a t e t h e b o d y. There are two types of bikes that can be chosen when designing an aquacycling studio. The first is a stand alone stationary bike that is placed into a pool o r b o d y o f w a t e r. There are also additional suction cups on the base to prevent the bike from sliding u n d e r w a t e r. The second type of bike is an individual tub with pedals embedded into it that fills up like a jacuzzi when the rider is ready to exercise. There are jets that i n c r e a s e t h e p r e s s u r e o f t h e w a t e r, further enhancing the lymphatic massage of water creating firming and toning techniques. These tubs are typically

warmer as well and promote a more individualized experience for the cyclist. Another difference in the type of bikes is the footwear required. Regardless of which type of bike is chosen, a lot of space is required for an aquacycling studio. If the desired design centers around one pool with many bikes, then only one small class can be held at a time. Bikes span about 26 wide and need to be at least a wingspan away from the neighboring bike. This can be done by staggering the bikes or separating them by about three feet and organizing them into a grid across the pool. Ty p i c a l l y, t h e i n s t r u c t o r b i k e s o u t s i d e

When one large pool is used, another spatial requirement to consider is a deck surrounding the pool with enough room for movement. SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS

SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS Another approach to organizing an aquacycling center is to get individual cycling pods that are placed in individual rooms for a personalized experience. These pods range in size from 36” to 60” wide by 48” to 72” long. Therefore, quite a large room is necessary to allow the equipment as well as necessary movement such as climbing into the pool. In addition to the space that holds the cycling equipment, a locker room with s h o w e r s i s a n e c e s s i t y. B e c a u s e t h i s exercise practice in centered around w a t e r, t h e r e n e e d s t o b e a p l a c e l a r g e enough for an entire cycling class to dry off or shower all at once when a class is getting out so no one has to wait. The larger the class a studio wants to hold, the larger the pool and locker room needs to be.

C y c l i s t s m u s t arrive 15 minutes before class begins to have enough time to change and rinse off in the shower before entering the pool. Upon entering the pool room, bikes have to be set up by adjusting the seat and handlebars to the bikers’ size and comfort. The class is composed of a maximum of 14 cyclists in the pool and an instructor that bikes outside of the pool on the deck. The main layout of this studio is a reception area with staircase that leads to a locker room, that then connects to the pool room. There is also an additional sitting area and yoga studio on the second level of the studio that overlooks the reception area. Aqua offers juices, water and teas in a small incorporated café. There are additional spaces for nutritional coaching with an on-site expert to provide a one stop shop for health and wellness. Entering AquaSlim in Paris, France is a little different of an experience. Upon entering the studio, the cyclist walks into the main corridor leading to many smaller individual rooms and is greeted by the receptionist desk. They provide guests with a towel, water socks, a bottle of water and assign them to a specific room and pod and help set up the bike to the person’s specifications. Once the cyclist climbs up the three steps into the pod, they sit down on the bench and the back glass closes so the tub can begin to fill up. There are no instructors or classes; it is all individual based exercise up to the cyclist. Cyclists pedal against the added resistance of 24 jets for sessions of either 30 or 45 minutes. There is no locker room in the studio, and no precycling showering is necessary because the pool drains and refills with each use. This eliminates the need for a large locker room to accommodate an entire class of people using the locker room at the same time.

HydroFit in Chelsea, London has a studio experience similar to that of AquaSlim in that it is a purely individual exercise. There are no classes or instructors and cyclists sit in private “luxury rooms” with flat screen televisions or hook up their personal music via Bluetooth. Upon entering Hydrofit, the customer is greeted by the receptionist, checked in and handed a c o l d g l a s s o f w a t e r. T h e y a r e e s c o r t e d downstairs to an assigned room. Along the reception area is a skin care retail area and a full juice bar in the back of the main room. When entering a private or partner “cycling cabin” the receptionist closes the pod and the water takes about seven minutes to fill up waist high. The bikes are programmed t o t h e c y c l i s t ’ s g e n d e r, w e i g h t a n d a g e . The 30 minute sessions are composed of consistent pressure from 20 jets and noise canceling headphones to drown out the sound of the rumbling machine.

MATERIAL, LIGHT & TEXTURE The material, light and texture vary throughout current aquacycling studios due to the different bike types and spatial arrangement. Depending on whether a studio chooses to have many bikes in one pool or to have individual pods in different rooms, the largest difference in material, light and texture seems to be the type of light used. It would be assumed that because this i s a p r a c t i c e s u r r o u n d i n g w a t e r, s a f e t y is a larger concern then other types of exercise studios. This has proven true for all of the existing aquacycling studios, including the three examined in this research. But the way they use light differs depending on the type of equipment they use. Looking at Aqua Studio, the use of many bikes in one larger pool, which requires overhead lights to ensure the entire area is well lit. The light is not too bright, so it still exudes the feeling of a typical indoor s p i n c l a s s , w h i c h a r e t y p i c a l l y d a r k e r. Aqua Slim and Hydrofit both use individual spinning cabins, but use light in different ways. Aqua Slim has a very white and bright space. Each room is painted white and very well lit before, during, and after a session. Hydrofit, on the other hand, uses light to set a particular mood. The rooms at Hydrofit are naturally dimmer and the cyclist chooses a color to shine from their individual cabin depending on which color makes them the most relaxed. Light is not being used solely for a practical reason or safety concern, but as an aid

towards achieving health and wellness. Because of the use of colored light, the rooms containing the cycling cabins are mostly white. The rooms are small and serve the single function of containing the machines while allowing for the individual to create their own atmosphere during their separate session. Upstairs in the reception area, retail area, and j u i c e b a r, t h e a e s t h e t i c i s c o n s i s t e n t l y white marble and metal with a few wood details. All three studios have a very different aesthetic. AquaSlim is very minimalistic has a mostly white interior with a few colored graphic elements and large gray tile floors that carry throughout the entire space. The materials are consistent and clean. Because AquaSlim has chosen aquacycling through individual cabins in individual rooms, they have chosen to use frosted glass sliding doors that c a n b e l e f t o v e r t o t h e c e n t e r c o r r i d o r, or opened up to the adjacent room. This allow the cyclist to exercise in private without feeling completely closed off from the rest of the studio. Aqua Studio has carried over the low lighting of the pool room into the rest of the studio. The reception area and lockers rooms use darker materials such as wood, brick and black iron to give the space a warm and inviting feel. Upon entering Aqua Studio, it is apparent that there is more offered than aquacycling classes.

AQUA FITNESS TODAY The early 2000s saw a movement toward moving land based exercises i n t o t h e w a t e r. “ N o n - s w i m m i n g a q u a t i c exercise grew in popularity in the United States by almost 8% between 1998-2007 (Salzman).” By moving a variety of fitness practices into the pool, it began attracting the attention of different groups of people. There are now a wide variety of workouts done where the body is either partly or full submerged, such as aqua yoga, aqua Pilates, aqua pole dancing, aqua cycling, aqua kick boxing, etc. The water provides a high resistance workout, while being less impactful on muscles and joints with water ’s ability to mimic weightlessness.

While there are many benefits to water aerobics, the workout presents a couple of challenges, namely the financial and logistical hurtles. Pools are often located within gyms that have membership fees, and classes are t y p i c a l l y o f f e r e d a t a n a d d i t i o n a l e x p e n s e . A d d i t i o n a l l y, i f t h e p o o l i s n ’ t indoors, seasonal changes can make the fitness practice impossible. There is a mentality surrounding the exclusivity of pool access, so when the pools are free, say community centers, they are thought to be dirty and less desirable.

HISTORY OF BABY BOOT CAMP

PRACTICE

Baby Boot Camp is an exercise regime designed to suit the fitness needs of expecting and/or new mothers. The program first began in San Francisco in 2 0 0 1 b y f i t n e s s i n s t r u c t o r K i r s t e n H o r l e r. She recognized the need for a cost efficient program that would help mothers “regain or enhance pre-pregnancy fitness levels and meet the physical challenges of parenting (Baby Boot Camp, 2016). The fitness regime revolves around the idea that you do not need more than the weight of the stroller and baby to work out.

The boot Camp can be broken down into a series of stroller-based exercises known as the Strollercize and Strollga Regimes. Strollercize includes jogging and various aerobics while Strollga focuses on yoga. The program is run outdoors as a way to get women out and moving as well as to act as a distraction or source of entertainment for the babies. The classes are offered twice a week for 8 weeks and the cost varies as follows: 2 Adults + Children under 18: $1,656 1 Adult + Children under 18: $1,128 Individual: $948. (Baby Boot Camp, 2016)

DEMOGRAPHICS Baby Boot Camp programs are part of a larger group of fitness offerings designed for expecting and new mothers / parents. “According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are approximately 6 million pregnancies annually throughout the United States. (Applebaum, 2006). In 2014 there were 3.98 births (Calfas, 2015). This leaves a large group of potential clients looking for a place to either stay fit or get back into shape after giving birth. This large group of women can be broken into prenatal (pregnant women)

and postnatal (after birth) women looking for places to stay fit (Applebaum, 2006). The offerings for women under the postnatal category can be further broken down into postnatal workouts without the child, and postnatal workouts with the child. This study will focus on postnatal p r a c t i c e s g e a r e d t o m o m a n d b a b y. H o w e v e r, i t i s i m p o r t a n t t o c o n s i d e r t h a t although postnatal fitness regimes with mom and baby are designed with the postpartum female body in mind they are n o t r e s t r i c t e d t o w o m e n o n l y.

BEYOND THE BOOT CAMP As baby boot camp is an outdoor fitness regime we will focus our attention on a program designed for mom and baby that is practiced indoors. One of the most popular classes offered in this c a t e g o r y i s P o s t n a t a l Yo g a ( G r e e n , 2 0 0 7 ) . The social aspect of this practice is important for our understanding of its p o p u l a r i t y. A l t h o u g h P o s t n a t a l Yo g a i s a fitness offering only a small portion of the practice is really physical yoga. The success of the practice stems from the community it builds through gatherings of

new parents. “Many new moms find that the camaraderie of postnatal classes helps offset the sometimes isolating and disorienting stage of early parenthood” ( G r e e n , 2 0 0 7 ) . P o s t n a t a l Yo g a i n s t r u c t o r Jane Austin says “the sessions are much more social than regular ones. Sometimes the thing the mama gets most out of it is the connection” (Green, 2007). Thus, postnatal practices give parents an opportunity to connect both physically and socially with both other parents and their babies.

POSTNATAL YOGA PRACTICE Postnatal yoga is a gentle practice that focuses on rebuilding your body after childbirth. The different stretches and poses are designed to strengthen your muscles and soothe the aches that come with becoming a new parent. As these classes are designed for mother and baby the exercises focus on connecting mothers / caregivers with their new baby (Green, 2007).

DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION

MOTIVE On the left we can see certain motivations or reasons for adults to participate in Baby Boot Camp or P o s t n a t a l Yo g a . W h i l e a l l o f t h e s e reasons apply to both practices they w o u l d b e r a n k e d d i f f e r e n t l y. B a b y B o o t Camp is focused heavily on getting new parents back into shape, fast. Postnatal yoga is more centered around the idea of socializing and community building. In common to both of these practices is the incorporation of the child into the fitness regime (no need for a sitter), as well as a focus on the mental well-being of the individuals participating. In regards to mental health, baby boot Camp is an outdoor practice, which is a good way to get mothers out of the house into fresh air as well as allowing children to be stimulated by the natural environment. Although postnatal yoga studios offer practices indoors the emphasis on community building contributes to the mental health of the participants. In terms of environment factors for postnatal yoga it will be interesting to explore the incorporation of the natural environment into an indoor practice.

SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS: MOVE ERGONOMICS According to fire code regulations the minimum space required per student is 35 square feet. This space allows for a regular sized mat with only a 1 foot perimeter around the mat (Occupancy Loading, 2014). In consideration of the fact that postnatal yoga involves two people per mat, along with yoga equipment, to perform the practice we have extended this perimeter to 2 feet around each mat. This allows for participants to comfortably stretch off the mat without interrupting the person beside them. Furthermore, this extra room allows for the instructor to easily circulate the space in order to tend to each student.

DECONSTRUCTING DOWNWARD DOG In this diagram we examine a typical motion occurring within studio space. Deconstruction of the downward dog pose with adult and baby: 1. In this case the adult begins on all f o u r s l o o k i n g d o w n o n t o b a b y. 2. In the second stage the adult brings their head down facing the baby and begins to fold their body shifting their weight backward and resting on their toes.

3. In the last stage push from your toes extending your legs and lifting your hips into an inverted “V”. From here lower yourself down into position 1. on all fours. Benefits for adult: “Clears stiffness in your shoulders; lengthens and straightens your legs; helps to create arches in your feet and strengthen your ankles.” (Modestini and Doane, 2016).

Benefits for child: This exercise is entertaining for the child as you move up and down getting closer and further away from them (Hanson, 2016). FIT | BOOK TWO

FURNITURE & FIXTURES: WALL FIXTURE The large sliding wall is multipurpose. T h e w a l l a l s o h a s built-in storage. Finally there is a smaller door built into the sliding wall for people to make a subtle late entrance or early departure. The thickness of the wall provides both visual and acoustical privacy for the yoga sessions being conducted in the

studio. As seen in the diagram above the opening and closing of the door affects the ventilation of the space. The windows on either end of the long building allow for air to pass through the space when t h e w a l l h a s b e e n s l i d o p e n ( A R C H D a i l y, 2015). CEILING FIXTURE LV L r a f t e r s h a v e b e e n i n s t a l l e d o n t h e ceiling throughout the space. These rafters are lined with LED strips that are pointing upwards, toward the ceiling. The light cast on each rafter produces a “gentle glow ideal for inducing a m e d i t a t i v e s p a c e ” ( A R C H D a i l y, 2 0 1 5 ) .

L o c a t e d i n A r i z o n a , t h e i n t e r i o r o f Yo g a Deva was designed in such a way to create a unique client experience. The design intent is to transport the client to an internal realm, void of any exterior visual environmental conditions. Thus unlike the other two case studies this studio attempts to make a break from natural conditions. This studio was chosen as a case study because they no longer offer postnatal adult and child yoga classes. We will explore why the studio, operationally and spatially was not a good fit for adult child yoga.

PROGRAM The facility is around 2000 square feet. The layout of the space is designed in such a way that places the yoga studio at the center of the plan. The ancillary spaces are made up of the reception, retail space and changing areas. The long and narrow entrance includes a reception area and a communal seating space. This space allows visitors to gather before and after class. Moving towards the back of the studio you’ll find the retail space and then bathrooms and changing areas. The narrow entry hall is not a space

conducive to the movement of wide strollers or people carrying large loads (i.e. baby bags, baby baskets). There is however a long available wall for parking the strollers. While the wall is available to rest the strollers against the narrowness of the hall would limit circulation in this instance. There are three private toilets and two public changing areas with two showers. There are no baby changing tables. Unlike Bend and Bloom the Retail space is not in the reception area, but beyond in its own room. FIT | BOOK TWO

Faced with millions of untrained enlistees, the government desperately needed a rapid means of enhancing the physical and technical abilities of the men and women headed into combat. This demand for accelerated physical development led to the creation of the boot camp system. Beyond strengthening the bodies and minds of the enlistees, the government promoted the boot camp with an aim to foster a sense of community and trust among the soldiers so as to enhance their efficacy as a unit. These early boot camps consisted of a series of obstacle courses, rigorous weight lifting routines, and simulations of battle-like scenarios. The trainees were also required to carry their 10 pound rifle with them at all times, so that it would become a natural extension of each man or woman during combat.

THE RCAF IN THE 1950S

According to an article published on March 31st 1998, the Royal Canadian Airforce inspired the boot camp m o v e m e n t o f t h e 1 9 5 0 s . D r. B i l l O r b a n o f t h e R C A F designed a fitness plan called the 5 Basic Exercises (5BX), that consisted of 6 progressive exercise charts, each containing 5 exercises. The program required that participants perform the exe r c i s e s i n t h e s a m e o r d e r f o r 11 m i n u t e s a d a y. Orban’s research showed that long treadmill sessions did not improve one’s oxygen intake; therefore, he concluded that intensity of the workout is more important than duration with regards to cardiovascular fitness. Orban’s research and exercise regiment set a precedent for the boot camp culture in that it established the importance of vigor and intensity in a short time span.

The government hoped that the strict methodology and discipline of the military’s boot camp would introduce order into the lives of the inmates. The growth of such boot camps in prison systems was fueled mainly by the growth of offenders incarcerated in the 80s and 90s. THE PRACTICE BARRY’S BOOTCAMP is structured around the philosophy of combining an equal amount of cardio and floor work in a one-hour workout to burn between 700 and 1,300 calories. The space is structured to simulate a club-like environment with highly motivating personal trainers, ‘flattering lighting,’ and a state of the art sound system to motivate participants. Barry’s employs HIIT (high intensity interval training) to combine high-energy activity with low-energy activity to maximize metabolic output. Each day of the week is dedicated to a d i f f e r e n t p a r t o f t h e b o d y, s o t h a t t h e participant has the opportunity to focus on their choice of muscle group. The studio is divided into a floor space and a treadmill space, with the participants divided between the two and alternating at equal intervals. Users can opt to ‘double floor’ if he or she choses not to run during the treadmill portion of the class. Barry’s also offers Academies and ‘Hellweeks’ with discounted rates to incentivize users to make Barry’s a routine workout stop, rather than a singular workout. Overall, Barry’s provides a very high-end, approachable boutique fitness offering.

WHAT IS THE ORANGE THEORY? Orangetheory fitness is designed around the concept of encouraging participants to reach the ‘orange zone,’ or one’s peak heart rate. Upon arriving at the studio, each user receives a heart rate that enables one to monitor heart activity throughout the 60 minute session on a scale of 5 intervals. The studio characterizes this method as the EPOC: excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The science behind EPOC suggests that a f t e r c o m p l e t i n g a s e s s i o n a t O r a n g e t h e o r y, h e o r s h e e x p e r i e n c e s an increased metabolic rate for 24-36 hours.

CROSSFIT DESCRIPTION & CONCEPTION CROSSFIT FOUNDATION CrossFit was created by Greg Glassman, in 2000 in Santa Cruz, CA. He defines CrossFit as being “a strength and conditioning system built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity”(Glassman, What is CrossFit?, 1).

a work out with the same intensity as an Olympic athlete using the same weight equipment. In order to complete a successful work out, the weight is scaled down so that the elderly person can perform the functional movement at a higher personal intensity and thus achieving the same fitness benefits as that of the Olympic athlete.

Our natural motions (standing, sitting, throwing, lifting, climbing, running etc.) influence the functional movements that define CrossFit work outs. Gymnastics and weightlifting reflect a significant amount of these functional movements as well. By constantly varying these movements at a high intensity CrossFit is then training the human body for peak overall physical fitness. As stated in the article “Foundations”Greg Glassman, “CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains.” (Glassman, Foundations, 1) These functional movements are key to e v e r y h u m a n ’ s f i t n e s s ; h o w e v e r, w e d i f f e r in the degree to which we perform the t r a i n i n g . A k e y p a r t o f C r o s s F i t Tr a i n i n g is scaling the load and intensity of a particular program to meet the needs of the individual. (Glassman, What is Fitness?, 10). For example, an elderly person would not be able to perform

In order to train properly to yield the highest quality of health & fitness, a heirarchy for CrossFit athletes was established which combines functional movement work outs (cardio training, gymnastics & weightlifting) with daily nutrition and sports. (Glassman, What is Fitness?, 8). NUTRITION/DIET The basis of the heirarchy is nutrition. CrossFit suggests that you base your diet on garden vegetables, especially greens, lean meats, nuts and seeds, l i t t l e s t a r c h a n d n o s u g a r. C r o s s F i t Athletes often follow the Paleo Diet which is a plan that is based on food and eating habits that may have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, before evolution interfered with the production and processing of food. (Glassman, Foundations, 8)

GYMNASTICS The aim of functional movements labeled as “gymnastics is to focus on body control. These practices such as climbing, yoga, calisthenics and dance establishes capacity for range of motion, f l e x i b i l i t y, c o o r d i n a t i o n , b a l a n c e , a g i l i t y and accuracy improving our overall fitness. (Glassman, What is Fitness?, 5). WEIGHTLIFTING CrossFit training incorporates Olympic style weightlifting which includes movements that improve strength, s p e e d a n d o u r a b i l i t y t o p r o d u c e p o w e r. Weightlifting also develops our ability to control external objects. (Glassman, What is Fitness?, 7). SPORT CrossFit promotes engaging in a variety of sports as an application of the fitness developed in training. Sport applies fitness in competitive atmosphere with tests on randomized movements and physical challenges. Crossfit Games were created in which athletes participate in a set of physical challenges which are not released until the day of the event prompting participants to be at peak fitness. (Glassman, What is Fitness?, 8).

M E TA B O L I C C O N D I T I O N I N G / C A R D I O CrossFit incorporates metabolic conditioning into workouts through activities such as biking, running, swimming, rowing, speed-skating and cross country skiing. These activities build capacity in three metabolic pathways in the body: aerobic, lactic acid and phosphocreatine. The most effective way of performing CrossFit cardio movements is through interval training which mixes bouts of work and rest in timed intervals (Glassman, What is Fitness? 3. FIT | BOOK TWO

THE CROSSFIT BOX DESIGN “THE GARAGE GYM” After founding CrossFit, Greg Glassman began writing The CrossFit Journal which outlined the methodology of CrossFit. One of his earliest issues described the ideal gym for CrossFit which he calls “The Garage Gym”. Looking at trends in competitive fitness centers, Glassman saw that the large commercial gyms, or “big box”, gyms required a significant amount of space and money to operate with little f i t n e s s a n d h e a l t h r e t u r n s . H o w e v e r, w h e n trainers began to go out on their own and set up smaller personal gyms, clients followed and benefited from the personal c o n n e c t i o n . A d d i t i o n a l l y, b y d o w n s i z i n g t h e space required for effective work outs, the “small box” gyms developed more efficient layouts and cost savings on equipment required. (Glassman, The Garage Gym, 2-3). It is the CrossFit mentality that “where you train is less important than how you train and that who you train with matters more than what gear you have.” (Glassman, Garage Gym II, 5). And so, Glassman developed a new concept for the small box gym that he believed would yield the best fitness results at a low value by making use of durable and everyday accessible facilities such as your own garage. The equipment necessary to perform the constantly varied work outs is a driving factor in creating a functional gym s p a c e ; h o w e v e r, a s C r o s s F i t ’ s c o m m u n i t y has grown, the desired class sizes and p r o g r a m a l s o c o m e i n t o p l a y. T h e g r o w t h in the community and development in CrossFit competitions allowed for members to out grow their private garage gyms and want to expand into larger facilities to accommodate their team training. These affiliated gyms have become known as “Boxes” and reflect a marriage of the basis of design in the Garage Gym with t h e C o m m u n i t y, B r a n d i n g a n d C o m p e t i t i o n of larger organizations (Glassman, The Garage Gym II, 4).

215 CROSSFIT by Rory Madden

THE CROSSFIT BOX DESIGN THE BOX Given the nature of the equipment required as well as the work outs performed the following spatial guidelines are recommended when looking for a gym, or “Box” as the CrossFit community has begun to refer to their gyms(321goProject. 5 tips): - 1,000 sq. feet can accommodate a class size of 8 to 10 people comfortably - 2,000 sq. feet can accommodate a c l a s s s i z e o f 1 2 t o 1 8 p e o p l e c o m f o r t a b l y. - 3,000 sq. feet can accommodate a c l a s s s i z e o f 2 0 p l u s p e o p l e c o m f o r t a b l y. The flooring in any Box should be should be able to withstand the high amounts of weight and foot traffic required in C r o s s F i t Tr a i n i n g . R u b b e r M a t s a r e suggested for their durability as well as sound prevention and overall safety (Glassman,The Garage Gym, 2). Finding a space that has concrete, steel or wood framing along the walls or ceiling caters well to a CrossFit gym because these can be used to support and suspend the equipment required for training. (Glassman, Garage Gym II, 4). AMENITIES Reception: Because adequate space is key to work outs, reception areas are often reduced to a desk where members sign in for their class. Merchandise and even food packages are also included in reception areas to further p r o m o t e C r o s s F i t c o m m u n i t y, t r a i n i n g a n d nutrition. Bathrooms/Locker Rooms: Most affiliated CrossFit gyms will offer b a t h r o o m s ; h o w e v e r, l o c k e r o r c h a n g i n g rooms are not necessarily available given the approach to retrofitting a “small box” space.
