COVER STORY
Mae Rim - Samoeng Rd.
Nature On Your Doorstep
Mae Sa waterfall 8
Looking for an escape into the mountains not too far from Chiang Mai? Head to the Mae Sa-Mae Rim - Canal Road loop, or the ‘Samoeng loop’ as it is affectionately known by residents of Chiang Mai. Popular for a day trip amongst residents and tourists alike, the 100 km round trip is a favourite of tour groups, cyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts keen to navigate the road as it twists and turns through beautiful mountains and forest. Named after the town of Samoeng (a sleepy town 5km off the main route), the loop winds it way from Chiang Mai, through the regional centre of Mae Rim through the mountains and back down to Chiang Mai. Head north up the 107 from Chiang Mai, and then west on the 1096 just after Mae Rim. The junction is hard to miss, with a large board advertising a number of main attractions. The route is both a mecca for predictable tourist attractions and a trail to more peaceful nature spots. As you continue driving, the signs for a number of tourist attractions becomes almost comical, advertising everything from cobra shows to monkey centres and insect zoos. Continue further and you start to get the feel of country living, as the road starts to wind through small country towns and onwards into the mountains. If you feel like a few nights break out of the city you could also check in Sukantara Resort. This luxury eco-resort and spa lies on the sloping bank of a mountain stream. It’s best to plan your trip before you head out on the loop as there is so much to see and do. If you are an independent traveller with a car or a motorcycle (or bicycle!) there are many attractions and ways to experience this beautiful part of Northern Thailand. Bring your driving skills(!) as the second half of the road is the most picturesque and serene, however has a few difficult hair pin turns and the occasional elephant on the road. This part of the trip is also less touristic with small cafes, organic communities and plenty of nice spots to stop at. 9
F
irst stop along the road is the wonderful and majestic Mae Sa waterfall. Worth a day trip itself, pack a picnic, your swimming gear and some walking shoes for a relaxing time in nature. The waterfall has an impressive 10 cascades and it is is one of the most beautiful in Chiang Mai, just be careful during rainy season. Next, is Chiang Mai’s botanic garden. Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is best visited in the morning or late afternoon as there is not much shade cover. Walk (or catch a bus) around the grounds, take a stunning tree top canopy walk and head into the green houses, there is so much to do!. The various green houses showcase beautiful flora from tropical flowers to dry zone plants. If you are hungry or thirsty, it’s a good time to stop off at one of the restaurants, cafes or resorts overlooking the valley. “Proud Phu Fa” is an idyllic and affordable environmentally friendly resort, overlooking the Mae Sa valley. Stop in for some lunch and take a break in the sculpture gardens or explore the bridges and waterways. Mon Jam is another beautiful place to visit. The turn to this beautiful place is located on the right hand side, passing the village of Pong Yaeng (watch for Aura Drinking Water sign). Mon Jam is part of the Royal Project, it is located about 10 kilometre from the main road but is worth the trip up there. It is a wonderful place where to have lunch or watch the sun set, it offers a unforgetable view point on the hill and beautiful nature (sometime foggy sea as well). You can enjoy the restaurant and also stay overnight in one of the VIP tent (about 1,000 Baht) with breathtaking view over the valley.
Mon Jam.
As it twists and turns the road itself now becomes a tourist attraction! Breathtaking mountain ranges and forests are a feature of the second half of “the loop”. There are many well situated view points for photo opportunities. This part of the trip is also strawberry farm territory where you can taste strawberry from November’s on. This part of the valley houses a large choice of restaurants and coffee shops with great atmosphere and beautiful views. Don’t miss visiting one of this unique places, each one has its own style and dish and it is surprising to find them in the middle of the mountain.
Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden
area, the Royal Project encourages the production of pesticide free vegetables. The Nong Hoi Royal Project welcomes visitors and has a small restaurant where you can sample and buy produce. Avid cyclists up for a challenge often ride the whole route! Chiang Mai has a number of informal cycling groups and organized group tours. Contact one of the friendly online community groups to find out about the next meet up. The groups often ride the Samoeng loop and variations of the loop. Be prepared to wake up early and enjoy the challenging but rewarding ride through the mountains and to villages off the beaten track.
-Tha Chang Hill Coffee (nice atmosphere and view) - Yonyang Groups Japanese Restaurant (japanese style restaurant ) - Salisa Mini Cafe (imported beers) - Sepsil Glin Kafe Bannok (coffee place table in the stream).
Your last stop might be at Ton Kwen temple. This temple is one of the finest example of Lanna style architecture and one of the few remaning wooden temples. It was built in 1858 and is now under the care of the Thai Fine Arts Department. Nowaday, it is a favorite temple where Thai people enjoy the quiet atmosphere and beautiful architecture; it is also famous among photographer, especially pre-wedding photographers.
As you come towards the end of the trip, slow down and have a wonder through “Bann Kwan Khiang Dao Bamboo House resort”. A recently established organic farm and resort with very affordable accommodation, organic meals and jazz nights. Only a 25 minute drive from the Chiang Mai city centre (very easily found with GPS), it is a very chilled place to hang out, walk amongst the fields of organic produce, and end your trip around the loop, or have another overnight stay! If you are interested in sustainable farming, look out for the Nong Hoi Royal Project on your way around the Samoeng loop (turn of at Ban Pon Yaeng). Set up over 40 years ago by His Majesty the King of Thailand to combat opium production in the Mae Sa Elephant Camp 10

Kalae Things Lanna
One of the first things visitors will notice in Chiang Mai is the beautiful traditional houses and buildings that can be seen in many places. This architecture is typical to Northern Thailand and is very unique. The traditional Northern (Lanna) house, or Ruen Kalae is similar to the Thai (central) house in that it was originally constructed completely from teak wood, and built elevated from the ground to protect from flooding during the wet season. What distinguishes it from central style is the “V” shaped, hand carved Kalae which can be found on each side of the roof. Some believe that the Kalae is meant to symbolise two birds used to scare away crows which were said to bring bad luck. It has also been said that it represents buffalo horns. Others say that, in the old times, during Burmese occupation, Thai people were asked to put a Kalae on top of their roof to differentiate themselves with Burmese people. Whether you believe one explanation or the other, Kalaes are handcrafted structures that beautify houses and buildings of northern Thailand, and they can be found in many different styles.
Kalae Lannna

DINNER BY THE RIVERR
Ping River
Set in a classical Lanna style teakwood house on the Ping River, Paak Dang is more than just a riverside restaurant. It is a cultural experience with professional service paired together with some excellent fine-dining. K-Jin & K-Lin made a big and bold decision to leave everything behind in Singapore to start a new life in Chiang Mai – with a mission to give back to society. Paak Dang is their first acquisition in Chiang Mai – starting off with a humble team of 4 staff, the restaurant has since grown exponentially and currently the Paak Dang team is made up of 20 staff catering to a 60 seat restaurant. With a wealth of experience between them, K-Jin & K-Lin both work hand in hand to equip the staff at Paak Dang with many important life skills. Aiming for the ‘ripple effect’, the brother and sister team would like the benefits to trickle down to their extended families back home. While dining at Paak Dang, don’t miss tasting delicious Phad Pong Karee Soft-Shell Crabs, a delicious yellow curry and the Paak Dang Duck Curry, a house speciality with “fall off the bone” duck meat in red curry paste. Over the last few years the city has changed significantly and now attracts families and Thai residents from Bangkok. The most iconic structure in Pattaya is The Sanctuary of Truth. Intricately carved entirely from teak wood, the awe-inspiring 105 meter-tall hall is a one-of-a-kind structure in the word. Neither temple nor palace, despite looking like a hybrid of both, it was commissioned by a local business tycoon to act as a place of appreciation for philosophy, art, culture and faith, without being tied to a single religion. Situated on Na Klua Road, North Pattaya, The Sanctuary of Truth covers an area of more than 3,200 sq. meters,. It’s name in Thai is Prasat Satchatham, with “prasat” meaning “castle” and “satchatham” meaning “philosophy”. The Sanctuary of Truth was constructed according to ancient Thai ingenuity to withstand wind and sunshine on the seashore. Made entirely of wood (without any metal nails) and commanding a celestial view of the ocean, it is best described as a visionary environment: part art installation, religious shrine and cultural monument. It’s four wings are each dedicated to a religious iconography: Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Indian. Through elaborate carvings and sculptures, it pays tribute to the seven creators man cannot exist without: Heaven, Earth, Father, Mother, Moon, Sun and Stars. Covering an impressive area of two rai, every part of the attraction is embellished with magnificent wood carvings. Even the bolts that hold the wall, roof, floors and sculptures are made of wood. Although construction was started in 1981, the building has not been completed yet; it is being constantly added to, developed and repaired (against salt air deterioration) and is set for completion in 2025. For this reason, visitors need to wear a safety helmet provided when touring the facility with the assigned guide. The Sanctuary of Truth is located in the Naklua area of Pattaya, close by Centara. It is open daily from 8am to 5pm, entrance fee is THB 500. To get there, motorcycle taxis can be hired from Pattaya for THB 50 to 70. 39

THE RIVER MARKET : MAP
