Game of Polo Comes to Uganda

All the glitz And Glamour

I

t was an all action thriller at Kakira as the 5th edition of the annual Nile Gold Classic tournament hosted by Kakira Nile Polo club (KNPC) kicked off.

The Polo classic which has been held every year, for the past five years, saw players and fans converge in Jinja at the Kakira grounds. The event has now risen to become an important part of the social calendar for fans while attracting a section of the expatriate community and Ugandans too. Participants jetted from all over the globe as far as Switzerland, Barbados and Kenya. Four teams sponsored by Barclays, Tata, Turkish Airlines and Civicon tussled it out for the Madhvani and Nile cups. Being a social event, there were hospitality tents offering lots of food and drinks by mostly sponsors Nile Gold and a play area for children was busy too. The usual fashion and style pomp was showcased by the guests, especially the young ladies who turned up to enjoy the world's oldest team sport. The guest of honour was the Commander of the Special Forces group Brigadier Muhoozi Kainerugaba who handed over trophies at the end of the event to the respective winners.

DR. JOSE CHAMELEONE'S SON ALBA ROCKS BUZZ LEAVERS "The Buzz Leavers rock turned into a family affair as Uganda's self proclaimed music Doctor Jose Chameleone and his son Abba Marcus were the star performers and rocked the teens together."

A

s is the norm these days, there is always a big party thrown for the teens every holiday. And this month we witnessed yet another of such big gigs as the teens were treated to massive fun and entertainment at the just concluded Buzz leavers Rock. The party was at Garden city’s rooftop and by 5:00PM, the whole venue was already jammed up with the colourful teenagers who were enjoying themselves with their buddies. Now that the holidays are here, teens are always looking to kill off their boredom and were all over the place showing off their ‘swag’ The event was held under the theme ‘Tobacco and the Youth’ where the youth were urged to

stay away from cigarette smoking and all kinds of drugs. This time one common 'proggie' united them The Buzz Leavers Rock - the most anticipated teens’ event of the year. Drinks especially from sponsors Mountain Dew were flowing. The event attracted some of the big musicians in the country. However Chameleone and his son Abba aka T-Rex were the centre of attraction as father and son had a massive performance. The youngsters were further excited by performances from the likes of Pallaso, Vampino, File, Navio, The Mith, A Pass, Cindy, Irene Ntale, Radio, Weasel who all tried to outdo each other in impressing the teens Behind the turntables was some of the top DJs in town including Dj Mark, Dj Sleek Stuart and Dj Shiru who kept holiday makers on their feet.

"There was excitement written all over the faces of staff from SMS ONE company when all were assembled for a three day retreat at the Garuga Country Club in Entebbe"

S

MS ONE A subsidiary company of Speeda Mobile had a staff retreat at the Garuga Country Resort Hotel at the shores of Lake Victoria last week. The retreat which also doubled as the end of year party and festivities saw staff participate in many team building activities, fun games and the exciting ‘speed dating’ session conducted by renown Kampala public speaker Ethan Mussolini. The management of the company decided to have the retreat away from the usual environment to give the staff an appropriate intimate setting to be able to know and understand each other better and also share different experiences in the company as individuals. The retreat had staff from all the Brands that are under Speeda Mobile which includes SMS ONE, Chano8 Digital Magazine and Mixa Kids (Online Publication platform for children and their parents). Mr. David Mushabe the Managing Director outlined the plans and programs of the coming year and thanked the staff for staying positive and working hard in a difficult year for many companies in the Digital and communications sector.

Q& A

102

2014 HiGHS AND LOWS LEARNT IN A Miles Rwamiti is presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.

T

his year has seen some growth and projection in the music industry. So many things happened and we cannot finish discussing them on a platform like this. However there are some key notable points that characterised 2014. In te Ugandan music industry First and fore most, there has been an increased rush for local stars to break into the international market. This has created some positive competition and thirst to thrive on the international scene hence forcing artists to up their game in producing quality music and quality music ideos that can feature on internation screens. This competition has made artists to work even harder and be more creative resulting in songs like Sitya loss (Eddie Kenzo), Wale Wale (Jose Chameleone) and Love Everyday (Bebe Cool) storming the airwaves across the world.

Ask Rwamiti Chano8. December 2014

The breakup or separation of Eagles Production has exposed so many things and lesions that other artists or bands can learn. The fact that some individuals were stripped bare and all weaknesses exposed means individuals who hide behind their more talented colleagues should be careful.

ASK RWAMITI Chano8

AND THE LESSIONS WE CHEOTIC YEAR

103

The quality of music videos improved

This year has laid a foundation for a more competitive year ahead. It promises to be more competitive with artists getting more aggressive as new talent has emerged at the same time the Old boys waking up from their slumber.

This has also made us know the real stars and there was consequently emergency of new fresh talent like King Saha, Ziza Bafana, Maro and Gravitty Omutujju and David Lutalo some of whom were mentored in these bands who took advantage of the gap created by the separation This year has laid a foundation for a more competitive year ahead. It promises to be more competitive with artists getting more aggressive as new talent has emerged at the same time the Old boys waking up from their slumber.2015 will be the year to watch for the industry

Another lesion learnt is that creating own scandals to hype one’s self no longer works. Its a numbers game wether scandal or no scandal, fans excitement caused by leakage of photos etc don’t necessarily reflect on support for the artist 2014 also saw artists raise their game in the level of organising concerts which has tremendously improved but need to send a trend that sponsors and corporate companies can appreciate. A case in point was Bebe Cool's Best Of Bebe Cool concert at Kampala Serena Hotel which caught the eye of many peopel involved in the industry

Chano8 2014 WRAP UP

It's A Wrap

Highs and Lows Of Uganda’s Music In 2014

The year 2014 has been an eventful year on the musical front. For several months of this year, several musicians have continued to scale the strides.

F

or others, it was success peppered with a tinge of controversy. Uganda continued to be a music destination of choice for the international artistes but is it time we called time on Jamaican artistes performing here? Who needs Paper loving Chris Martins when we have Eddie Kenzo? So Jamaican Mr. G wants to come back and settle in Uganda? What kind of Dilemma is he in? Does Mr Swaggerific want to come and ride on the short-lived success of his collabo with Cindy and Bobi Wine? Well, back to issues at hand.

• Give Kenzo a standing ovation. His English might be suspect but it hasn’t stopped him scaling the world. Ever since he released Sitya Loss in May 2014, the only way for Kenzo has been up. His success has irked the middle class who faulted his English proficiency and the Masaka boy has the last laugh. He is a son of the street; of the hustle. He’s a school dropout but this boy from Masaka has in more ways than one been our veritable ambassador. The Sitya Loss video went viral with over 5 million views on You Tube. The dance moves executed by his “Sitya Loss: kids have been one of the most imitated. He has been so successful that even when he thumped a radio journalist, Isaac Katende of Dembe FM to pulp, many sided with him. What more could he ask for?

• Does Desire have Ekitone (talent?) Chano8. December 2014

Music is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form. When Desire Luzinda announced a Black and White concert at Kampala Serena Hotel, many watched with bated breath. She silenced her detractors. With entrance at sh100, 000 she had a full house. But the detractors were still there. When her jilted Nigerian boyfriend Franklin Emuobor leaked her nudes, it has thrust her up there. She is the most sought after musician this period and we don’t know which Kitone, crowds look out for. -The body or the voice? She has reaped from the bittersweet nude saga.

• Bebe Cool fights for Ugandan art. Singer Bebe Cool has been accused of having an opinion on everything and everywhere including mars. He has a strong resolve and isn’t easily swayed. He was dissed when he launched a music campaign urging all artists to shun TVs and Radio Stations that don't play Ugandan but Nigerian music. The Artiste-DJ battle got the likes of Sanyu FM’s (James Onen) Fat Boy and XFm’s (Keith Kuyoh) into overdrive. An irritated Fat boy retorted: "I like Bebe Cool as a person, but I'll be frank, to me his music isn’t all that. And I feel the same about most other Ugandan artists' songs. And if patriotism is important to Bebe Cool, then why does he pretend to be Jamaican." Bebe Cool listened to criticism. Rather than sound Jamaican, he went a new genre. He is now fattening on the strength

• Juliana is bereaved. A dark cloud hovered over the musical landscape when local diva Juliana Kanyomozi lost her only son, Keron Kabugo on July 20th. The eleven-yearold Kabugo lost a battle to Asthma in a Nairobi hospital. As her fans struggled to comprehend how Juliana would cope following the loss of her child and best friend, she is slowly going through the motions. The popular Tusker Project Fame judge has slowly picked up the pieces. On a musical front, she recently completed a video shoot for her song with UK based Ganda Boys. The song, “Something of My Life” was recorded at Fenon Records.

When you join music and your aim is to tame raging male hormones, something is amiss. This is exactly while a little-known Jemimah Kansiime a.k.a Panadol Wa Basajja booked a ticket to the correctional facility, Luzira. She ousted the dirtiest music video, which disturbed many eyes especially ethics minister Father Lokodo. For her over exposure, she together with her producer Didi Mugisha pleaded guilty to producing pornography. Their song was contrary to the Anti-Pornography Act 2014. To her reprieve the singer who was sentenced to serve one year, was released after a month.

As fans filed out of Kampala Serena Hotel after the Jazz safari, in its seventh year, they agreed that no one else comes close to Joe. Together with Tizer and Norman Brown they wowed the audience as they showed mastery of their craft. The legendary Joe Thomas – Better known as ‘Joe’ performed hit after hit that included some famous love songs like ‘Do wanna be a player’, ‘I wanna know’, Stutter, ‘Treat her like a lady’, ‘Love scene’ and more. The stars aside and Mafikizolo’ s awardwinning tantrum where they refused to perform, it somehow served up to its high billing although some argued it was a bone without enough meat. May be the organizers Club set the bar too high; those who attended were pregnant with expectation. “Club Beer would have done a better job with that money, say for example sponsor talented youths by shooting quality videos for them to get exposure,” some bayed. But such are Ugandan critics. On a positive note though, the Ugandan acts like Bebe Cool and Team No Sleep’s Sheebah and Pallaso, put up better performances than Burna Boy and Patra. Just so you know that it was not all rosy from there, Patra recently trashed a remix she did with Bobi Wine dubbed “Burn Dem” she branded it amateurish.- A kick in Bobi Wine’s teeth for 2014.

For the legendary Afrigo band music followers 2014 hasn’t been great. They were weaned on finding their favourite band in one place. Life hasn’t been the same since the band developed nomadic tendencies. Since they left Little Flowers following a KCCA crack down, they have been everywhere; from Lavanda (Lugala), Monalisa Royale (Rubaga), Jazz ville (Bugolobi), Club Ambience (Bakuli) to Paka Complex in Zana, they have strayed and stressed fans in the process. Get back to the good old days.

• Elly Wamala remembered. Friends and fans in conjunction with the Elly Wamala estate remembered the ever-green singer in an All-star tribute concert on December 12th at Kampala Serena Hotel. The project partly sponsored by Nile Special was a toast to a true champion, according to Tim Kayondo the brand manager. Several top Ugandan musicians who did renditions of Wamala’s songs joined others like the Afrigo band remember the legendary musician.

The Hilarious And Humble Star Shares Her Story The hilarious and cantankerous Anne Kansiime talked to Chano8 About her rise to fame in a male dominated profession of stand-up comedy. She currently ranks among the top comediennes from Africa and has since been travelling all over the world cracking ribs. She shares the story of her other side of life:

WHO IS KANSIIME? Anne Kansiime Kubiryaba is a Ugandan comedienne and actress also referred to as "East Africa's Queen of comedy." She is one of Africa’s top female comediennes. She had her screen breakthrough in the Don’t Mess with Kansiime show with clips on Youtube that have garnered millions of views on internet. Kansiime started her career with Fun Factory in 2007 where they had Comedy Night drama skits every Thursday at Uganda's National Theatre. The best skits were broadcast on NTV Uganda in the Barbed Wire TV show that later became U-Turn. She co-hosted the MiniBuzz program with Brian Mulondo as a Taxi interview conductor and provided comic video dramatizations of topical issues that random passengers discussed. Kansiime who also hosts the Don't Mess with Kansiime television show on Citizen TV in Kenya is a Mukiga from Mparo, Kabale and a graduate of Social Sciences from Makerere University, an old girl of Kabale Primary School and Bweranyangi Girls in Bushenyi.

ABOUT AFRICA LAUGHS 2 It was a massive show but also hectic. I wanted to do something new and unique which ended up in a 15 minute wrap yet felt like I was only

GROWTH OF COMMEDY The females are picking interest. There are about 75 (stand-up) comedians now. Everyone is trying their best to be funny because of the trend setters who pioneered stand up comedy it has not been a smooth ride however the environment has already been created due to the hype that surrounds the stars. The punch liners (upcoming comedians) are now enjoying the conducive environment as they have a stage ready set to show case their talents e.g. at former Effendies and at Acacia Mall every Tuesday there’s is ‘Queens of Comedy’

It has been a journey of seven years with ups and downs which involved gigs, sidekicks and business where we sold clothes and other stuff just to get the extra buck. COMPETITION FROM NIGERIANS Nigerians do publicity for their own whether it being music or comedy. They support their local stars and hype them whereas Ugandans don’t do the same but instead look for scandals to discuss. Nigerians also have a bigger audience because of a bigger but supportive population that is willing to market and promote them. The reason they seem to grow faster in every sector. Chano8. Marriage AND LOVEFLIFE Every marriage has challenges but how I handle mine comes pretty easy because of the fact that we are friends. So most times we talk things out before it even gets to the media. We always create time for each other and chat. That way, it becomes easy to discuss the challenges or allegations that appear in the media.

I am grateful to my fans. I am also able to earn a decent living from comedy as well as meet some important people in the world who have been my idols like Vivica Fox, Ramsey Noor, Queen Elizabeth URA commissioner Allen Kagina, KCCA ED Jenifer Musisi, famous Actors, Ambassadors, Commissioners Etc i LOOK UP TO

I love children but there’s time for everything and my husband's people understand my situation so the stories about my in-laws demanding for children is false. I used to be a quarrelsome and talkative person but all the energy has now been used up or is channelled towards comedy. So when I go home I just go to ‘do the right things’ like cook, check that things are all right and then I relax. And sure i can fight for my Ojok. Why not? he is the man of my life. Copy Cats? Of Ugandan lyrics and Nigerian, Jamaican sounds

“Is this a new trend or is it luck of creativity and originality? There is a huge wave of new sounds sweeping across the music airwaves that sounds and tastes foreign. What is happening?".

itherto littleknown singer, Ziza Bafana is a ‘star’. He woke up one day, chanted the words ‘Pomini Pomini’ and had a ‘hit’. Next was comedian Allan Mujuni (Amooti). His popcorn song ‘owolubina’ copied from Jamaican singers Konshens and Romain Virgo’s ‘we no worry’ hit is all the rage, enjoying massive airplay. Just so you know how low our singers and audiences have sunk, Ziza Bafana had a full house crowd when he launched and Amooti is fully booked through the festive season not for his comedy skits but on the strength of the song alone. Just how low can we sink? Lately, there has been a worrying development of young Ugandan artistes imitating Nigerian and Jamaican music from style to melody and sometimes lyrics. Chano8. Ugandan artistes driven by commercialism. Creativity is in short supply in Uganda but sadly, it appears an acceptable way of life. Joseph Batte, a music critic lambasts the deplorable pattern. He blames it on commercialism. “Creativity is in very short supply

here. If there were marks to be handed out for creativity, most Ugandan artistes would score badly” he says. Unlike Ugandan artistes who are ready to jump on any bandwagon, he says that it has taken the Nigerians several years of creating their own style and adding interfusions with

Are some of the Ugandan artistes trying to sound like Davido?

In an interview with Chano 8, Exodus says he knew West African music was the future and premised his song Igwe, released in 2011 on the Nigerian set and costume. He hasn’t been disappointed. western beats. “Nigerian music has a mass appeal across Africa because of its originality. Ugandan artistes are copying this unique Nigerian style into their songs, but what they don’t realize is that they are promoting Nigerian music. They might enjoy instant fame but in the long run, it is counterproductive for the development of Uganda’s music,” He argues. There are several songs that attest to it. Jose Chameleone’s ‘Wale Wale’ and in some cases, Eddie Kenzo’s ‘Sitya Loss’ have been branded borrowed songs. Chano8. December 2014

For other songs, the flow and intonation is so West African, you can tell that our own have succumbed to pressure. Whereas it is a new thing for some artistes, Gospel singer Exodus was among the first to fall for the allure of West African beats.

It pays to sound Nigerian. In an interview with Chano 8, Exodus says he knew West African music was the future and premised his song Igwe, released in 2011 on the Nigerian set and costume. He hasn’t been disappointed. “It is a massive timeless song. My fans in Uganda, Australia, UK, Kenya

and elsewhere, have identified with it. I do not regret aping their style,” He says. Exodus however denies that it is an act of laziness on the part of Ugandan artistes. He terms it an act of moving with the flow. If it is a case of moving with the flow, many have joined the bandwagon. Omulangira Ssuna’s ‘Follow You’, Goodlyfe’s Ole and Talk and Talk fall in that realm. Ray Signature’s Kasenyanku copied from Nigerian duo Bracket, caused an outcry. “The sad thing is that these musicians are thinking short term. Whereas some have been fooled into thinking that sounding Nigerian has propelled them to the international stage, it will still be their undoing. For how long will they copy?” Batte queries. He argues that they have very little music education, both formal and informal and cannot invest to learn, which is why they will fall hard with a thud for thriving on other people’s sweat.

Coco Finger says it it very important for artists to be creative when it comes to lyrics

Moses Okori, (Coco Finger), whose distinct dancehall style has taken him places tells Chano 8 that whereas it isn’t wrong to copy, one needs to put thought into the lyrics. In a recent interview with The Observer, singer Mowzey Radio scoffed at the concept of the ‘ideal Ugandan sound’. “…if Ugandans are sounding Nigerian, then how does Ugandan music sound?” The irked Radio asked. He said they were simply responding to the demands of the local population.

Jamaican copy cats do poor job. Chano8. December 2014

Jamaica and Africa have a lot in common. Why are our dancehall pretenders doing a poor job? Peter Miles Kanyike has been able to get cross-continental collaborations going with Demarco, Elephant man and General Levy but he doesn’t have much going for him.

General Mega Dee collaborated with Mr. Vegas to little avail and of recent, Bobi Wine’s collaborations with Mr. G seem to have been forgotten. places tells Chano 8 that whereas it isn’t wrong to copy, one needs to put thought into the lyrics. The Luo Ambassador now intersperses luo lyrics with the dancehall style believes that fans are now discerning. “The audience here now understand and embrace reggae and dancehall music 360 degrees. You cannot concoct or lip synch and thrive. It is better for one to employ thoughtful lyrics on the beats,” he offers. Coco Finger, the Never Never singer admits that many upcoming musicians have come and stagnated after one hit simply because there are no loopholes. “People who love dancehall listen to the real Jamaicans, when you come and sound mediocre, no one will care about Chano8. your music,” he offers.

Copying is an age old Ugandan problem. As Ugandans oscillate between sounding Nigerian and Jamaican, Chano 8 is told that it is an age old problem that has goaded Ugandan music from the 70’s. Whereas it is true that Ugandan music has its roots, copycatting is not new. In the 70’s singers copied Congolese styles. Hadijja Namale’s 1971 hit, Mukulike Omwaka, was washed out of a Congolese song. She admitted in a recent interview with Bukedde TV. Philly Lutaaya, for all his talent, borrowed some ideas and songs from other artistes. When Alone and Frightened was released, we initially thought it was the Swedish duo of Roxette that lifted the intro of Lutaaya’s song for their hit,

It Must Have Been Love. But it was Lutaaya who lifted segments of Roxette’s song. Whereas some can be forgiven, other artistes are plain pathetic. In the 1990s, Ronnie Riggs Kavuma copied Jean Paul Samputu’s Nimuze Tubine and released Mubayambe Mubajjune, using exactly the same tune. When Samputu followed up on the plagiarism, it marked the end of Kavuma’s music career. If only the Nigerians and Jamaicans camped in Uganda like Samputu did, we shall be saved from Ugandan musicians like Ziza Bafana and Amooti et al, who obtain money by false pretence!

What inspires the song? Ngaali means crested crane in Luganda. The cranes brings to mind a majestic bird, carries its self with elegance dignity and pride. Its leadership skills and amazing qualities are some of the things that inspired the song, especially in this world of tragedy and everyone needs answers. When you listen to the song you see how it relates. Who wrote and produce the song?

Chano8. December 2014

The song was written by Abraham Sekasi and Brian Kizito Gideon, whom are fellow band members. We also feature Myco Ouma on the Guitar who is quite brilliant. The song was recorded by Samuel Bisaso at BlackSmith Records. How come Janzi band has decided to go into music recording unlike most bands that stick to live performances? We don’t aim to be like most bands, we are diverting and branching out into all forms of music. We go out of the way to write universal music that is listened to by everyone all over the world. We have a message about life, music and our country and we will carry it everywhere in all ways. We have developed our own sound and soon we will be a

Hehehe of course we didn’t all go into the booth at once, first of all we are 8, that would be a funny sight though. No, we went to the studio, but recorded individually and was later blended together. So we would sit around and wait for each member to record. Ochola who described herself as fun loving, art enthusiast and fashionista prides herself as an IT lady. Her Arab money idea was conceived after fifteen years of travelling across the globe and realising Uganda always had the same entertainment setup although new clubs and happening places keep popping up. She has seen different trends from the carnivals in Brazil nd wine festivals and classy theme nights in Dubai. She had it all and wanted something new classy for the Crème de’la Crème with a strict dress code So in 2010, Sue launched the Arab money at the annual Goat Races in Munyonyo as a themed hospitality tent for Sue and her friends to enjoy the races in the company of associates, friends and family in style and comfort. The theme reflected African and Arabian art fused in a nomadic camp in the desert which she confesses was inspired by true life experiences in Dubai and Chano8. December 2014

other Arab countries with rich heritage and classic celebrations of life. After the success of the themed tent event at Speke resort Munyonyo became a success with a media buzz and public excitement, Sue decided to make it an annual event for classy, trendy and high class fashionable people to have fun and enjoy good food, drinks, entertainment and company of each other in a high end ambience. The event now takes place every December as a celebration of the year concluded. Because of her unique idea and association with the IT girls in town, Sue became popular and the trend picked up so massively that, every year the ‘who and who’ of Uganda and East Africa now look forward to this event. With the experience of trendsetting to throwing the most lavish and glamorous parties in Europe, U.S and Brazil, Sue has now revolutionalized the entertainment and party scene in Uganda and East Africa. Creating a connection between art, fashion, music and culture, the Arab Money team has held events leaving attendees craving for more with the unique sense of style and attention to detail which has won over admiration and a dedicated following and fan base.

I joined St. Mathias Kalemba in Bugerere Kaynga District where studied for two years 2002-2003 before shifting to Kanjuchi because it started performing better- I love the best things in life you know(laughs). I studied for two years till i completed my senior four ans sat for UCE. I then went to Kasawo for ALevel in Mukono before joining Makerere University to pursue a degree course in Mass Communication. Qn: How did you get into music and when did you start music proChano8. December 2014

duction? Did you study to become a professional music producer? When I was a child, my mom used to sing in the Seventh Day Adventist church choir so I used to listen to her sing and eventually loved music. So when I joined her in singing I became so passionate and the best singer and started miming while at high school calling myself Easy Nash. I recorded my first single in Okudhi Studio called ‘Easy Nash Designer’ a dance Hall song. I followed it up with my second single done in Proline Studios by Clever J called ‘Kiriza’ a love song in Afro Beat tune. So this encouraged me to get involved in music even the more and i them asked my big brother to start a music recording studio. He agreed and bough a few equipment and installed the Full Loops (FL)Fruity Loops program. In 2008 Moni Kats (Duncan) and Kingsley now based in Sweden joined me and started mentoring me as we started making some

small money from the studio but the two left for juicy deals in Rwanda leaving me all alone to figure out how to produce music. However in 2009 I decided to join radio and got a job in Kingdom FM as a production manager but soon quit to get back to studio for audio production. That’s when I joined Ketra studios on Martin Road in Old Kampala for two years before getting my own juicy deal in South Sudan for their peace songs which featured their top artistes When I came back, I worked with Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) at the National theatre and then joined Monster Studios where i churned out some of the best hits in the country

Qn: How do you rate Ugandan music industry visa vie Nigerian or West African music. And where do our artists rank in your own opinion? Ugandan artists or musicians have no identity and most times copy each other or artists from other regions instead of creating their own. I advise our local artists to simply come up with their own style and identity that way they can have a unique touch that can compete internationally Qn: You seem to be an ambitious Youngman, who Inspires You and where do you get the drive to strive for success? I always want the best in life and i am working towards changing the music industry and improve the scen and level of music coming through. I am greatly inspired by(American Hip Hop Star) Jay Z and dream of meeting and working with him in future. That will be my altimate achievent which can even kill me out of excitement Qn: Besides music what else do you do?

Qn: You were recently in the news accused of disappearing with some client’s money as well as abandoning your job at Monster Studios. What actually happened? Nash Wonder is bigger that Monster Studios, so when I felt that I had outgrown my stay, I decided to start my own studioWonder Studios. And this did not go well with my noses at Monster Studios and my boss didn’t want me to leave. So when I posted on my face book page that I had started my own studio, immediately the stories about me appeared in the media and I started hearing stories about me all over that I stole money. So the question is, if I stole 16 Million why haven’t I been arrested yet? I have not gone hiding and my phones have been on why don’t they come and arrest me. Those are false allegations to tarnish my name and there is no truth in them Qn: Challenges face as a Ugandan producer or in life generally? The most hurting is the fact that there is a group of presenters(Radio and TV) who spread false stories in the media to tarnish my name and image and many of them are not even supportive to the artists and producers and don’t wish us well.

Rising Star

Being a developing music industry, it is not so easy for an an upcoming musician in Rwanda to stretch their work internationally. That was rather challenging in the beginning, though we are experiencing progress with time and effort.

Qn: You are now signed with Platinu Entertainment, how did that happen and how it that working for you? I must mention God for being responsible for this all. For the fact that Platinum Entertainment saw a talent in me and decided to work with me and for the mere fact of bringing us together. The rest, its out of making effort and deciding to see beyond boundaries..so If I have to tell how we met,its quite along story but great experience ;). and so far we are making strong steps together. Being in a team is a good feeling and they are becoming more like family.

Qn: What do you think of the Ugandan music industry in comparison to Rwanda’s? I think the Ugandan music has grown and achieved a lot in the past years, a journey that Rwandan music has just started. I do also recognize diverse talents in both countries and the possibility for all of them to grow, we should all find means to push each other to the next level by healthy competition and collaboration.

Chano8. December 2014

Qn: Which East African artist would you like to work with? And African? dating for about three years and he is quite a liberal person. He recently suggested that we have a threesome with one of my friends. Gloria Batuta

H

ehehe. Well, Lily your boyfriend is a freak! I am a big advocate of being able to shake up things in the bedroom whenever you hit a little snug. No one said long relationships have to be boring, but a M’enage trios (three some) is not the easiest to pull off. Let's start at the beginning, I comment your boyfriend brining up the sexual boredom, most guys just sleep around and don’t mention it at all. As you said, he is a liberal guy so a 3some makes sense to him, what about you? What kind of person are you, sexually? Is this the kind of thing you could see yourself partake in? Those are the main questions you need to answer before we continue. If your not then walk away and meet yourself a nice boy with the morality and sexual orientation similar to yours. It is that simple. Since you are considering asking your friend I guess you decided to go for it. Now asking for a threesome is one thing but him picking your friend is a bit fishy. Threesome work better if the 3rd person is a stranger so there are no emotional obligations or awkwardness after. I suggest you leave your friends out of it. Also note it takes a couple to be completely honest about their agendas and feelings about it,open communication about your needs from each other and the 3rd party and lastly, trust, you need to trust yourselves to Chano8. December 2014

Establish ground rules you’re comfortable with, what is allowed or what is considered too far! 3somes aren’t for the faint hearted, but also require a lot of confidence in your relationship and yourself. say what you mean and mean what you say about the threesome. The moment you fail to trust, be honest and communicate with each other then this experience will destroy your relationship. Establish ground rules you’re comfortable with, what is allowed or what is considered too far! 3somes aren’t for the faint hearted, but also require a lot of confidence in your relationship and yourself. The worry of if your relationship will survive a threesome itself reveals our deeply seated mistrust of unconventional passion – and even more than that, women’s embedded distrust of men. We’re not only brought up to express our sexuality in the most demure ways, but we’re reminded time and again (listen to talk radio, anyone?) that men are dogs, and unless we keep our guys on a tight leash, (while plying them with enough un-demure sex to keep them happy) they’ll drop their ethics along with their pants – and it will be our own fault. Unleash your inner freak, You might enjoy it. lol

His Take

W

ell Lilly I must congratulate you on your impressive level of naivety. Its normally things like these that get women’s lives messed up pretty good and leave them reeling with broken hearts. Then you have the audacity to ask silly questions like I don’t know why a good man is so hard to find. Firstly, I do not understand why your eyes haven’t opened to the fact that your boyfriend is simply an opportunistic person. With a man like that, you should expect a lot of trouble coming your way. Why would he suggest a threesome? He simply wants a legitimate avenue where he can have sex with somebody else. That’s plain and simple my dear. And that you would grant that possibility merit ‘is simply preposterous. Anyway, like a right standing citizen, I will tell you, stay away from any form of group sex and this conniving boyfriend of yours. The sooner you give in to this request than you would have given him a license to sleep with your friend as he wants and when he wants. This may also be a cue to go and try other friends of yours or other women if he already is not doing this behind your back. Then you will be in a good fix and the possibility of getting an STI will increase incredibly. But I am not yet finished. Let me continue working on his canvass for you. Soon your marauding boyfriend will begin spending more time with your friend as opposed to with you. And to be succinct, he desires her more than he does you. That’s why he is on a mission to bed her and he does not respect you enough to keep this from you. In a nutshell this relationship is over. I do not advocate for kid-glove measures like talking him out of this crackpot idea of his. Simply run for your life coz believe me, he will find other willing parties apart from yourself to experiment such uncouth practices with. I also question the legitimacy of your relationship. I don’t understand how your man can have the nerve to come to you with such a preposition. Either you have previously shown him that you are that kind of girl and from your response I get the impression that you are. I would advise you to hike up your standards a little because unless you do you will get a steady stream of men who think they can treat you as they please. So you do need to clean out your closet. Things like groups sex are frankly unnatural and they will cause major damage to your conscience believe me.

Mark Kawalya In a nutshell this relationship is over. I do not advocate for kid-glove measures like talking him out of this crackpot idea of his. Sex is a very powerful aspect of human existence and when you blatantly abuse it your conscience will face some heavy duty scaring. Do not be fooled into thinking that you will walk away from it scot-free. No you will pay the price for your unnatural acts my dear. Stay away from this man and start a clean slate. You will come to realize that there are better more constructive ways to live your life. Do not be conformed to the things you watch is x rated movies and wayward websites. That stuff is very primitive and does not conform to the standards or upright societal living. Oh and you may want to start doing some church time coz by the very fact that you were considering agreeing into these acts then you need some spiritual guidance. God luck to you. May 2014

#8 Mulirwana KING SAHA king Saha, mentored by Chameleone, has taken Uganda by storm. The song is about a guy that’s fallen for his neighbour and stalks her throughout the video. Chano8 MUISIC VIDEO

TULI KUBIGERE

A Pass

T

he Tuli Kubigere song has been a big hit in Uganda receiving massive air play in hangouts and on several media channels. It’s also currently selling like a hot cake in Jamaica.

So I wasn’t surprised when I found that Jamaican video director Dameon Gayle jumped on board to direct the video. Gayle has worked on most of Konshens and Busy Signal videos among others, so I commend llolypop entertainment for having brought him on board because his prowess speaks for its self. Just like he says in the song, the video has Apass walking around from a ghetto to town trying to make a living and it ends with him performing at a night club. The story line is pretty amazing because it shows the hard work one has to invest to succeed. During an interview Apass, said that the song isn't just about him but its for everyone out there on the ground and hustle trying to make a living. The multi - talented A Pass has a rich variety of talent arsenal he posesses and is so volatile that he can adjust to any situation ranging from RnB Hip Hop to dance Hall genres. With his husky voice he belts out a rich fusion of RnB with dancehall fusion that makes a touching storu danceable as he exposes the difficulties poor people go through while hustling. Tuli Kubigere literally means 'we are on foot' and indeed in the video A Pass is portroyed as a street hustler trying to surive on the hash environment of the 'survival of the fittest'. Paces on the streets looking for survival and ends up in music and then in club. Good lyrics and nice video

he crazy bunch is back, but not trying to get even with their mean bosses this time… well not quite! but after part 1 it was quite clear that Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) were tired of answering to others especially maniacs so it was time to look into self employment. The guys decide to go into business together. They come up with a ‘shower buddy’ which catch the attention of a guy named Rex Hanson and his father Bert who later decides to steal the idea. Never being short of bright ideas they decide to kidnap Rex in order to pay up their huge debt, as you can imagine the kidnapping goes horribly wrong Yup, the kidnapping (no one said the plot wasn’t contrived). So Nick, Kurt and Dale ask for help from their pal ‘’Motherf—er’’ Jones (Jamie Foxx). They also check in with Nick’s foul-mouthed, now-jailed former boss (Kevin Spacey), and have a few runins with Dale’s sex addict former employer Julia (a funny, filthy Jennifer Aniston).

SONG REVIEW Chano8

Song Review

Lowooza Kunze Rema Namakula (Elly Wamala)

Rema in the music video

“The Elly Wamala foundation recently organised a campaign to redo the late veteran’s hit songs and many top local artistes were assigned particular songs. Some nailed it some failed miserably. Howver one star who recently joined the campaign is the budding star diva Rema Namakula who never seems to disappoint when working on any project. "

H

er version of Wamal’s ‘Lowooza Kunze’ is so heart melting that Rema’s voice seem to be getting more and more better and sweeter to the ears. Although the star is heavy and almost ready to push, she still comes up with an angelic look in the video with that killer smile enhanced by much envied dimples on her cheeks. Elly Wamala’s original song carries a rich message just like most of his other songs, however the way the renditions have done really matters in the way of expression rhythm and flow of the vocals whic Rema has no issues with when it comes to execu-

Chano8. December 2014

tion. The tempo is so smooth you can tell a pro is in control. I love Rema’s balance of the pitches as she oscillates between the highs and lows at the same time, knows when to keep it in the middle keys. Done by Kiwuwa at Grace Records, the instrumentation is rich too and you can almost feel the ‘live performance’ in it. Most especially with the trumpets and base guitar that highlights the veteran’s trade mark Afro-soul Kadongo kamu style. And of course the song is a love song in which she sings about trust and

ignoring jealous rumour mongers. She pleads to her love to trust and believe in her, love and care only for her as they mind their own (love) business because the rest are ‘not good enough’. The icing on the cake is the colourful video with an African touch in the fashion and style as well as the setting and land scape scene from where it was shot. Everything balances to perfection. No wonder fans were so much in love with her at the Tribute concert held in Kampala Serena Hotel.

THE RED HARE Venom's Executive Garage Bar

T

he Red Hare Garage bar was officially opened up on October 21, 2014 and it undoubtedly became the talk of town because of its exquisite look and space.

The Bar that was opened as Club Venom (mother club) underwent renovation, is simply breathtaking right from the interior design to the ample space allocated to it. Its overall ambiance of the interior definitely makes it one of the favorite hangout spots in Kampala as it’s found of attracting the high

end socialites and local celebrities. The Red Hare Garage gives clients that much needed relaxation, comfort, chill and satisfaction that they crave, no wonder they keep going back. The spacious interior would be the ideal place to have or host parties without the preying eye of the public. It also offers a nice background for those who want to take selfies or photos, so it’s always a win-win situation. The Red Hare Garage is located at the Tirupati Mazima Mall, Kabalagala right opposite the American Embassy.
