WORLD CUP

The World Cup Opening Craze

During a Special World Cup Opening celebration at Sh Silk Events brought the Brazilian Samba dance sensation

W

ho has not yet joined in the world cup craze? Well all across the country and everywhere the world over, everyone seems to be excited about the world cup and most especially the fact it is being held in Brazil the home of Samba. Coca-Cola brought the Brazilian Samba Feel to Uganda There were beautiful and colorful decorations as the organisers tried to create the Brazilian mood at the function. There were decorations on every table that were in form of football pitches with miniature balls. Every table also had flags of the different countries participating in the World Cup.

as they rhythmically did the Samba dance.

Dressed in carnival-like Samba attire, the celebrations kicked off with waist wriggling dancers thrilling the guests as the crowd cheered every move

There were also a host of performances from other local artists like Cindy and Myko Ouma. Guests were treated to a sumptuous meal and drinks.

hey say as you make more dime, the size of balls you play with tend to become smaller. The recent MTN Golf Tourney at Kitante Golf Club was one big collection of the ‘literati’ and money bags in town. Although an array of golfers sweated it out for a prized car at stake, the action was later at the ‘19th hole’ where they converged for drinks and entertainment. Seeing MTN’s outgoing CEO, Mazen Mroue and Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia sway to Iryn Ntale’s music was another story. Chameleone wasn’t about to be outdone, he put up such a performance that they dug deep in their pockets and showered him with dimes.

hen Cedric Babu mooted the idea of the Kwivuga Poetry Nights, the Kinetic Management boss never knew how long the ‘sessions’

ans, musicians, the celebrity line up and, yesRoyalty. Buganda’s Prince Junju and Toro’s King Oyo were permanent fixtures. Like all good things, it is a wrap for Kwivuga poetry nights. According to Cedric Babu, after the last show on June 26th dedicated to the soul of Maya Angelou, the African-American author, poet, dancer, actress, and singer, who died last month, it will be time to move on to other things.

KWIVUGA

Chano8

“We are doing the last Kwivuga ever. I believe we have exhausted it and it is time to move on. I believe Kwivuga has created a platform where people now see poetry nights as the inthing.” Babu told Chano 8 For Babu, who is surprised the Heineken sponsored night came this far, it is maximum respect for the people who made poetry the new in-thing. “We might set out to celebrate the life of Maya Angelou, but for me it is a show I want to dedicate to the fans,” He said. The poets at Kwivuga have always been ballistic, and the most interesting thing about the show is their ability to introduce a new face each time. Some stand out for tickling the crowd with their ingenious minds and others, well we just tolerate.

When the Kwivuga Poetry nights, pioneered by Kinetic Management started at Bugolobi’ s Gattomato one expected a semblance of the Lantern Meet of Poets but in a more exotic environment. Take Jungle –the- Man- Eater and his Mama poem. He has overdone it; fans had taken to reciting it as a way of encouraging him to be more creative after they became tired of ‘Mukisa’ (Fate) a monologue of desolate prayer done in his mother tongue, Lusoga. Other poets like Jason Ntaro have nailed it and gained cult followings. Ntaro, for instance, has a fascinating ritual of removing his shoes and walking barefoot onto stage after which he would take a deep breath. His voice, always with crisp intonation and pronunciation, carries a perception which highlights his talent.

Cedric Babu of Kinetic Management group. .

The likes of Nada (why does she always have beef with men?) and Slim Emcee, the revolutionary have enjoyed a cult following.

All Embracing Just so you know how Kwivuga was all embracing, they once tolerated MC Kapale of the Krackers and his toilet jokes! MC Kapale thought he was funny until it dawned on him that a few people in the house could understand his uncouth Luganda jokes. Alex Muhangi, Salvado Idringi, Anne Kansiime have enjoyed audience there. For the musicians like Benezeri, the poetry nights gave him a real platform and niche audience. “It was massive. Most of my fans who attended my concert were from the poetry nights,” He tells Chano 8. Other performing artistes who have lit the Gatto Matto stage include the upcoming neo-soul queen Maureen Rutabingwa alias Moroots, former Tusker Project Fame Four star Davis Ntale and Ruyonga. KWIVUGA

Kwivuga Poetry Nights:

A

sizeable crowd turned up at Bandali rise, Bugolobi on Thursday (June 26th), to be part of the final Kwivuga Poetry session at Gatto Matto Bar and Restaurant. A quick glance into the crowd confirmed that it was the usual suspects that turned up- Busoga Member of Parliament Vincent Bagiire, media guru, Simon Kaheru, the Heineken Uganda top brass, led by Juliana Kagwa, and the usual suspects drawn from

the poetry and music world. If ever there was an overriding emotion that the evening, it was that of nostalgia and regret. “But why?” Many asked as Cedric, who took to the stage with the founders, Slim MC, Jason Ntaro, Nunu and Roshan Karmali, scratched for convincing answers. “Even good things come to an end. We are planning something bigger and better

with our sponsors, Heineken Uganda,” He offered. Still, they were not convinced. The concluding edition just went to show how Kwivuga has offered individuals a platform to express themselves through storytelling, often times than not, in poetry form. On account of the last outing, Rabadaba and Don MC were on top form, they proved that beyond being good rappers they are great poets too!

he tabloids have had a field day reporting about Desire Luzinda’s relationships but the bait in all this was her body which has earned her celebrity status.

So when she announced she was holding a concert and not in any other place but Kampala Serena Hotel the debate on whether she could musically deliver made the rounds. Would she attract a crowd? Pundits were curious. On D-day she knew better to prove the naysayers wrong. Emcee Roger Mugisha introduced her as the eighth wonder of the world, bordering on her glamorous outfits with matching jewelry. Luzinda was out to prove a bigger point. She put up a good performance and actually did it live all the way. We will not rule out the fact that many of that most the male fans went out not just to check out her performance but to feed their eyes on her beautiful curves. This was all at her charity do she dubbed the ‘Black and White Affair’ which was in aid of orphans from her birth place, Ibanda. The beneficiaries were orphans from Ibanda Babies Home in western Uganda. And beyond her sexiness Luzinda lasted a good three hours on stage during which she

took the audience on her musical journey that started in the mid- 2000s. And in between the fete she took time to appreciate her fans for showing her love. She knew how to play out to the beat of the crowd. She went to enjoy a dance with Seya (former mayor Al-hajji Nasser Ntege Ssenagala). The crowd was waiting for that moment and when she rub-a-dubbed Seya. They went in a wild frenzy for word has it that these two were lovebirds. But it was not just Seya that was happy she was doing her thing. The father of her child, Kaddu Michael, was in the house as well as Juma Seiko who had a thing with the diva. Luzinda did not just offer musically, she also showcased her sense of style, changing at least five times to allow her to show off her curvaceous body. When Mugisha announced the fundraising, the rich and who-is-who dug deep in their pockets. She took off time to introduce her family and daughter Michelle who offered her mother a bouquet of flowers and thanked the crowd for turning up to support ‘mummy’. When it was all over, minutes past one o’clock in the morning, Luzinda had made her point that she’s got more than flesh to show for a good attribute. She could sing too.

On D-day she proved the naysayers wrong. Emcee Roger Mugisha introduced her as the eighth wonder of the world 25 July.2014

Her music speaks to the soul, arouses the spirit and also motivates and restores hope. Her concert was to thank her fans for the loyalty. She made sure she was in a fine mood and her stage delivery proved so. The Venue was Kampala Serena Hotel.

along to her songs that have become anthems. Like that, the Webale fete was a memorable one with the wow factor because as Babirye performed she connected with her fans particularly to explain to them about the inspiration behind some of her songs. The more popular songs like ‘Maama’, her tribute to mothers in our lives, attracted applause and got people on their feet and waved their hands in the air to appreciate their mothers. The gospel diva then turned to appreciate the fathers of the nation in a song titled ‘Tata Super Hero’. This concert had a noble cause too as Babirye explained how her music has earned her fame that has seen her travel not only to the different corners of Uganda but around the world. She says through her travel she has been to Nyenga where she has been able to give back to communities where her fans come from. In Nyenga she organized a health camp through which locals were able to test for HIV/AIDS, cancer, some got circumcised and others got dental check ups, all good health decisions. Babirye said that she will always use her music to reach out to the people and to also benefit those in need, just as much as her abilities can allow. The curtains fell minutes to eleven o’clock.

P

opular Nollywood star actress Patient Ozokwor well known as Mama G graced the Uganda Film Festival held at Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) House in Kampala. She was invited as a special guest at the launch of this year’s Uganda film festival. UCC was launching the second edition of the Uganda Film Festival where various stake holders attended including Ugandan actors, actresses, photographers and cinematographers. This year’s Festival is under the theme ‘Empowering Ugandans through Film’ and it will run from August 25th to 29th. The festival aims to generate interest in the Ugandan film

industry both locally and internationally and also to bring all the industry players together in a more focused and organised environment. The Uganda Film Festival is a brainchild of the Uganda Communications Commission which was started in a bid to streamline and develop the film industry in Uganda. Ozokwor, who has featured in over 200 movies is popular and admired by many in Uganda and around the world for her great acting talent, advised Ugandan actors to take part in advertisement dramas and films as this would help them grow as actors. ASK RWAMITI

What’s With All The Cel Miles Rwamiti is presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’.He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.

Is it real or just a gimmick to get attention?

Q& A

M

ost of the beef is just a cheap attempt to get attention. For instance it baffles me that someone like Pallaso who had an opportunity to sing with the best duo, Radio and Weasel, has instead resorted to beating them up. What makes it worse is that Weasel is his brother. From what I gather they even contributed to his return air ticket to Uganda.

Recently Abdu Mulasi attacked Mathias Walukaga verbally. He stated that he is better than Walukaga and he changed kadongo kamu to give it a danceable rhythm. This is laughable and rumour on the grapevine has it that Abdu is trying to get back on the music scene. Attacking Walukaga is not the way to go. I’ll say it again, let your music do the talking. An artist fighting is a thing of the past. These days major stars like Bebe Cool, Chamilli, Bobi Wine and Navio will not be caught dead fighting. They realized that this is not what people want and that their fans just want them to release good music and work towards noble causes.

Why has the beef increased over the last few months?

Ask Rwamiti 44 July.2014

It is because the artistes have run away from producing music that has a good message and have resorted to producing “bubble gum” music that will only be a hit for a season. There is a difference between a good song, a hit song and a mega hit. Some of the music we are listening to these days is just

ASK RWAMITI

Chano8

ebrity Beef In Uganda? danceable music and in an effort to push it further some of these artists have resorted to controversy like posting nude pictures online among other things. Controversy is at it’s peak before concerts and new releases and we are in that season.

Have the fights made them famous? Yes. I will go back to Pallaso. Some people might not have realized he was back if he was not in the media for almost two straight months or even more. But is it a good famous? Will it boost his career? Only time will tell. The artistes need to realize that the public is informed. They know when they are being taken for a ride. So please stop fighting, making false claims and more importantly please keep your clothes especially your panties on. People don’t really care. Be in the media for a good cause like when Chameleone supported tourism in Busoga or Peter Miles was appointed UN ambassador. Now that’s news worthy!

Do women also fight? Oh yes, they do! It’s just that they have silent beef. Some you will hear about but most times they will hide behind social media and will only roll their eyes at each other when they meet in public. It is rarely physical.

Are haters necessary to succeed? You can’t avoid haters. They are necessary to succeed. Even Jesus had haters hence the crucifixion. They make you work harder and increase your desire to succeed. It’s how you handle the haters that will make you or break you.

Moses Matovu and Silver Kyagulanyi

Are there artistes who are peaceful and successful? Yes, Silver Kyagulanyi and Moses Matovu are the first people that come to mind. It is possible but still the public always wants to know the other side of them and tries to meddle in their family life. My word of advice to all artists is that they should just focus on making good music, do not have pressure and just sit back and relax. This does not mean that you do not promote your music but let your music talk do most of the talking. A good thing cannot be hidden.

These days major stars like Bebe Cool, Chamilli, Bobi Wine and Navio will not be caught dead fighting. They realized that this is not what people want and that their fans just want them to release good music

Success

Why some artistes make it internationally and others don’t. I am one of the few people that were not shocked when the Goodlyfe boys got nominated for a BET award some time back.

Radio and Weasel in Breath Away video

I

mean these boys are hardworking, they have the talent and are not quitters. So it was just a matter of time, before they went international and they did!

Have you ever wondered why some artistes make it big, BET Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards and other international accolades and nominations? Why do some artistes have international tours, (well, at least to us

46 July.2014

we call them tours even when they are going to perform for a group of 50 Ugandans in Sweden or Denmark) and others don’t? Here are the reasons why some artistes make it big, to an extent of breaking borders and landing themselves nominations in big awards while others are stuck to performing in kwanjulas, birthday parties, weddings and the local bivulus.

MUSIC PROMOTION TIPS

Chano8

Chameleone remixed Gimme Gimme and made a new video

Artiste’s Aims and Goals When an artiste is starting off a music career, all they struggle for is a hit. Not putting in mind how far they want this ‘hit’ to go. Some artistes start with the main aim of earning international acclaim whereas others just dream of releasing a hit and being a celebrity in the local showbiz industry. So at the end of the day, it all draws back to an artiste’s aims and goals. Do they want to produce music for only Ugandans’ consumption or worldwide. After answering that question, the artiste then has to consider the second factor.

Quality One thing our Ugandan artistes are lacking is quality in their music production. Both the audio and video ought to be of quality. Our artistes do 47 July.2014

not want to spend much on their own music production. Today, a video of shs2 million is not a good video. That is why Radio and Weasel can afford to spend over USD30, 000 on Tough Sunday, one of South Africa’s best video producers. Once the video is of quality, it guarantees itself on top music charts of recognized music stations in the continent like Channel O, Trace Africa, MTV Base and many others. Hence nominations in international awards.

Management Most musicians in Uganda do not have a team that manages them. We are talking about an accountant, a PRO, a general promotions manager to keep the brand alive and active and many others. Artistes that have such management, like Radio and Weasel, when they were still under the Goodlyfe Management, are always bound to cross boarders and receive international acclaim.

Chano8

Navio will travel to the end of the world if only to shoot a quality video.

The rotation of music internationally is done by the promotions manager. Besides quality, an artiste ought to have a person who is doing his/her music distribution locally and internationally. That is why Radio and Weasel, Chameleon, Navio and Keko get airplay in international radio and TV stations while sone others don’t. The accountant or cashier is supposed to balance books inorder to know how much the artiste is bringing in and spending. But unfortunately, most of our artistes do not have this, they end of spending money lavishly in bars and cars forgetting to invest in the qual48 July.2014

ity of music. The artiste manager more like sells the artiste internationally, which most artistes’ managers in the country do not do. The artistes themselves do not know how to choose a manager, most of them have their friends and relatives as their managers, instead of hiring someone with vast experience in artiste management. If your manager has never crossed a border, or does not even have a passport, how then do you, his artiste expect to cross borders? Those who make it internationally definitely have professional and experienced talent managers.

to deliver the best music with sweet melodies. Talk of Maurice Kirya, Keko (both have signed deals with Sony BMG), Navio, Chameleone and others. These artistes have worked hard, with the right people and their hard work is evident in the music they deliver. Finally, there are many career options for a professional musician. They can be session musicians wherein they are tasked to learn music pieces and perform it either onstage or in a recording studio. They can also be session musicians who provide music for film, TV shows or commercials. General musicians are those who are knowledgeable on many types of music, especially popular music. They can play in various functions such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. General musicians may either perform solo or as part of a group. Know where you fall and with the above tips, you just may make it worldwide.

Super talent How many Ugandan artistes can play any musical instrument? Very few! Most of our artistes are just singers. It takes more than just singing to be internationally recognized. That is why Maurice Kirya has become a worldwide artiste after landing an interview with CNN International in 2011.

Hard work Musicians that we see today whose music has crossed borders have tirelessly worked hard 49 July.2014

If your manager has never crossed a border, or does not even have a passport, how then do you, his artiste expect to cross borders? Those who make it internationally definitely have professional and experienced talent managers.

BEST OF BEBE COOL

Bebe Cool

Chano8

Entertainer, Mentor, Entrepreneur And Inspirational Family Man Bebe Cool aka Moses Ssali is one of East Africa’s biggest Reggae artists and one of the pioneers of the modern contemporary Ugandan music. Chano8 met Bebe Cool and his lovely wife Zuena Kirema at his sister’s coffee shop in Ntinda. They were with their youngest son Caysan. He (Bebe Cool) talked to us about his music career, upcoming “Best of Bebe Cool” concert and his family. Below are excerpts from the exclusive interview: CHANO8: How did you get your stage name Bebe Cool? Bebe: Back in the day when I used to do school tours with Shanks Vivi Dee we went to Nabisunsa Girls. After my performance the girls started chanting “Bring back that baby! He’s cool!” I guess this was because I was the youngest one. On the way back, Shanks started teasing me “so you are now Baby Cool”. I liked the name and started going by “Baby Cool”. As I got older, I changed it to Bebe Cool and the rest is history.

Though most of it sounds rough, I also sound good when I use my soft voice. Buju inspired me to work with many voices.

CHANO8: So what’s your favourite song? Bebe: I like different songs at different times. In this season it’s Ntuyo Zange I have one that’s not yet released that I really like. It’s called Love You Every Day. It’s a rock house song that will break worldwide. Zuena’s favourite is Nkwagala.

CHANO8: Who inspired you? Bebe: Buju Banton inspired me. He’s a reggae icon with a rough voice. We did not have his style back then and I thought I could bring that to the Ugandan music industry. At the time Buju’s style was strange but interesting so I decided to follow his footsteps. It was special because all his music had sensible lyrics with a style that appealed to the youth. To this day my music always has a message.

Bebe Cool Perfoming in Toronto, Canada

CHANO8: Why Best of Me Now? Most people do this towards the end of their career. We think you still have a long way to go? Bebe: I have a lot of music right now. It’s possible that I am the Ugandan musician with the most songs in various styles. Over the last eight years I have graduated from games to serious performances. The interpretation of “Best of Me” can happen every twelve months although I have not had one since I started. A lot can change in twelve months in regards to songs, performance, fashion and the whole package. People and things evolve and there’s basically a new you every twelve months. Believe me, this is not the end. It’s only the beginning.

CHANO8: Why Serena? Bebe: I thought it would be a good idea to get my fans together to listen to my music giving them a chance to have an uninterrupted experience of the Best of Bebe Cool. This comes 52 July.2014

at a time when we have issues with outdoor events with Uganda Police, Kampala Capital City Authority, weather and insecurity. An indoor event gives us a chance to be better organized. Most of the people that will attend the Serena concert on Friday August 8th 2014 have not had a chance to meet me before because the previous venues were not easily accessible to them.

CHANO8: Any guest artists? Bebe: I will not have Curtain Raisers. The Best of Bebe Cool will not have other artists other than those that have I have collaborations with. I believe my fans need to listen to my songs from beginning to end with a few duets here and there. Its going to be a nonstop production

CHANO8: We have been reliably informed that your fans across East Africa are planning to travel to Uganda for the concert and then it’s “summer” season. Any special treat for them?

BEST OF BEBE COOL

Chano8

Bebe: Of course, they should be excited. This is going to be a once in a lifetime experience. Tickets will be out early so please buy yours as soon as they are available. The seating capacity is only 1500 people and there will be only 50 tables going for 3 million Uganda Shillings, VIP and 5 million Uganda Shillings for VVIP. VVIP gets you all the drinks you can drink. The general sitting will be fifty thousand Uganda Shillings and there are only 800 seats. Each guest will get my CD and after the Concert all VIP and VVIP guests will get a reproduced DVD from a cocktail function that I will have next February where they will also get the new album for 2015/2016. This event will be an invite only event.

CHANO8: You’ve been on a roll this year; new songs, new videos etc. This involves a lot of travel. How are you making it up to your family? Bebe: It’s a tug of war. I am ambitious and still have a long way to go. My target is world fame. I am doing this for me and my family. I have to make sacrifices and so do they. While we do share many special moments together, we are sometimes forced to sacrifice family happiness of today for a better future for our kids and maybe grandkids tomorrow. We tend overlook the “supposed to happen today” and focus on our vision of “supposed to better tomorrow” if dad achieves his goal and believe me I will get there.

I have a lot of music right now. It’s possible that I am the Ugandan musician with the most songs in various styles. Bebe Cool had a chance to meet Nelson Mandela (R.I.P) when he performed at his 90th Birthday Tribute in 2008 at Hyde Pary, London. 53 July.2014

CHANO8: Tell us about your new videos. Who did you work with? What should we expect? Bebe: This year I have worked with several new video production houses. I worked with Africa’s top video producer, Nigeria’s Clarence Peter, Ogopa DJ which is East Africa’s top production house and with an upcoming producer VJOne in Nairobi. These guys are good. They’re the best. They’ve learnt how to work with new technology. They are not guessing anymore. I have four new videos that will be out by the end of August. They were expensive. I spent

54 July.2014

about 60,000 USD filming them though we do not benefit directly from such investments in Uganda. In South Africa and Nigeria they have copyright laws that protect them hence they benefit from their videos. I intend to shoot more videos before the year ends because I have songs being produced by a Ugandan producer, Michael Fingers. He used to work with SONY UK and he’s now with Fenon Records. I am also working on another album with Benon of Swangz Avenue. I think he is the best local producer when it comes to audio. The quality of that music is worth spending thousands of dollars on.

Bebe: The Gagamel family helps me run my projects. They come up with programs and basically coordinate everything. When I have concert in Kamuli, all the money goes to charity.

CHANO8: So what next? Bebe: My focus is on shooting expensive videos to acquire the quality needed to compete worldwide. The stories you share encourage us though some make us cry…how do you find these unique people you interview. Do they also make you cry? Zuena: I have met several amazing people while doing NTV Life Stories. Some come to NTV or call in to tell us their stories while others just cross our path while we are doing other things. We appear composed on the show because by the time we get to filming we have probably cried more than you can imagine. Some of the situations are so sad but at the end of the day I have to shake it off and go back home to be the best wife and mum I can be. It does give me some hope that the audience calls the people I interview and helps them out. Some do it anonymously. NTV is planning some fundraising drives to help some of the people we have interviewed.

CHANO8: What’s it like juggling work with being a wife and a mother? Do you drop the kids off to school? Do you go to the grocery store? Zuena: From the first time I appeared in the media,I decided that I was not going to change my lifestyle. I still drop off and pick up my kids from school. I go to the supermarkets and even shop at Nakawa Market. I greet my husband’s fans when they greet me. The only issue I have with the market vendors is that they hike their prices when they see me and then only reduce them when I let them know that I know what’s up.

Local Talent Search

Music Competitions: What Next For the winners? Following the successful end of the second season of Coca Cola’s Rated Next that was won by 14 year old Ruth Grace, it is safe to conclude that Music Talent Shows are going to be around for a while longer.

U

gandan Television has over the years adopted several ideas from Western Television and Music shows and have earned their spot in those that are here to stay. The more popular international shows that the local shows were modelled after include American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent plus all its spinoffs and so many others. These have gone to produce some of our favourite international music stars like Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, One Direction and so many others. In comparison, local talent shows have not had such good fortune in terms of launching successful musical careers for the participants. The first one of notice to come was the Coca Cola sponsored show Pop Stars that gave us the popular girl group Blu3 comprising of Cindy, Lillian and Jacky. A

Valerie Kimani was the first winner and out of all of them, she has managed to make a name of sorts for herself.

This popularity can be attributed to its regional reach. We have since had 6 seasons that have given us a variety of winners, most of whom have gone ahead to do nothing of significance musically.

Then came Uganda’s Esther Nabaasa who amazed us with some of the most memorable performances in TPF history. She has since released an album Rock in a Country Soul with South Afri-

The next winner, Alpha Rwirangira, is a bit of a household name in his native Rwanda but he still could have done better considering all the training he got. Uganda’s Davis Hillary Ntare has so far been the most disappointing winner of TPF, failing to record any serious music worth writing home about. Kenya’s Ruth Matete beat 14 others to the Season 5 grand prize of 5 million Kenya Shillings (about 150 million Uganda Shillings) plus a recording deal with South Africa’s Universal Records. She is also currently off the radar. Hope from Burundi is the most recent winner of Season 6, but no one is holding their breathe. We are now used to the status quo.

NTV also introduce their own show, Talent XP, a spinoff from their previous dancing competition Hot Steps, that was supposed to overthrow Tusker Project Fame via viewership numbers. It failed miserably with one blogger dismissing the joke of a show with these scathing words: ‘Seeing from the show (the three times I have bumped into it) the judges seem to be coaxing the view-rot that accepts the popping and bboying or anything tasteless

In this time when our society suffers from an identity crisis, NTV I think you are making matters worse by this poseurish expedition that offers no answers but asks more questions. With this guillotine, you have played no significant part in answering this question more significant than that of a fly… on a wheel.’ The other Music show worthy of mention is the Last Band standing show sponsored by Nile Gold that aired on UBC. The organisation that included hosting the competition in bars left many unhappy and once again, the method of choosing the winner i.e. voting through SMS left many purists unhappy with the results of the band that eventually won. To sum it up, singing competitions, despite their flaws, are a good idea at the very core because they have managed to expose and create a new category of talented artists that we might have never known about otherwise. As of now, it seems the brands that sponsor these competitions benefit the most, which makes complete sense from

Ray Signature:

Ugandan Songwriter And Artiste

Raymond Joseph Mugerwa aka Ray Signature is a Ugandan songwriter, singer and instrumentalist. He is the name behind several hit songs dominting our airwaves. Hello Ray, please tell Chano8 about Ray the Hit maker. Who are you? My real name is Raymond Joseph Mugerwa. My dad is a preacher. I grew up in Kampala and studied in Budo Junior, Seroma Christian High School and Kings College Budo. I graduated from Michael Angelo School of Art and Design with a degree in Fine Art in 2010. I practise fine art inthe privacy of my home.

Are you single or a family man? I am single but seeing someone

How did you get into song writing? My music passion started from the church. My dad was a preacher so I grew up in the church, singing in the mass choir. In my S6 vacation I was involved in a talent search organized by Mr Silver Kyagulanyi that involved over 100 participants. Larry, Scar and I were the best and we formed a group called BigTym. We were together for close to three years from 2009-2011. In 2011 I decided to go solo with the famous Kasenyanku song. My talent for writing was

76 July.2014

uncovered by Silver Kyagulanyi, who is himself one of the most prominent writers. Silver mentored me and often gave me projects to work on which he supervised.

Which was your first song and who did you write it for? Byambirigo by Iryn Namubiru was the first song I wrote.

What does it take to write a hit song? First of all you have to have the talent to write songs, you need to research the theme so that each song tells a story with a beginning, an end and have a flow with consistency. The song has to have a melody. It is important to study the vocal range of the artiste for whom you are writing and ensure that the production is good and brings out the intended rhythm.

CAREER CORNER

What challenges do you face in writing a hit song? A lot of people do not respect song writers and some people I write songs for do not complete making payments.

You have written about all kinds of subjects, how do you choose the themes/subjects of your songs? I choose the song based on the mood and the capability of the artiste for whom I am writing the song.

Which artistes have you worked with? I have worked with Iryn Namubiru-Byambirigo; Julie Mutesasira-Saaba; Jackie Senyonjo-Netagagwe and Ku bampa; Rema-Sitaki; Irene NtaleGyobera and Katambala to mention a few.

What is the demand for your services? The demand has increased over time and so has the value attached to songwriting with each song now going for approximately 2 million Uganda Shillings.

Do you choose who to work with or not? Yes, I choose who to work with. I especially love to work with young upcoming artistes as they are quick to listen, are passionate and will push their music which brings it to the market.

Are you involved in any other stage of the song production or do you only write and call it a day? Yes I am involved in every stage of the song production as I sometimes get inspired to change something in an effort to make the song better. This ensures that it comes out in the way it was intended to come out without compromising the message and feel.

Which artiste do you look forward to working with? Juliana, Bebe Cool, Rema, Irene Ntale and Tiwa Savage and Kiduma from Nigeria

Who is your inspiration and who do you look up to in the industry? Silver Kyagulanyi, Neo and Babyface

OLD TIMERS

Eno Mic, A song that defines our generation? Every Ugandan who was old enough at the time the song was a big hit surely heard and danced to Ziggy Dee’s, Eno Mic.

‘I live my life like a superstar, Blessed are those who believe, But they need to see, Eno mic Eno Mic Eno Miciiiiii…’

T

hat was one of the most recognisable song introductions back in 2002 when that monster of a hit came out. Every Ugandan who was old enough at the time surely heard and danced to Ziggy Dee’s, Eno Mic. Some, like me, had the song in my memory word for word, beat for beat. It was that much of an earworm. Kids were not left out and they sang loudly to the controversial lyrics while their parents winced. The song got so much airplay in the clubs and on radio and TV it became an anthem of sorts. 80 July.2014

One of the radio presenters on XFM once said on air that if we were to ever change the national Anthem, he would nominate it. “A song that defines our generation!” were his exact words. With lyrics like ‘…Tuli wakati, Kwata wakati, E Uganda tuziina tuti. Money olina, Beamer olina, Mu kampala tolya sumu…’ you can’t deny the validity of his point. The current YOLO generation we have that specialises in rub-a-dub as the chief dance stroke probably grew up on these lyrics. The song was so massive, Ziggy Dee, born Adam Mutyaba Mukiibi, even got the chance to perform before the Honourable Members of Parliament (MPs). One can’t help but

OLD TIMERS wonder what strokes the MP’s were pulling when the part where he sings, ‘…Omwana asunda, Sunda ebutto, Sunda ebutto Boss alya biddo…’ came on. The main downside to all this popularity is that Eno Mic more or less sealed Ziggy Dee’s fate as a one hit wonder. How does one manage to top a song like that? How? There was Sunda, a controversial remix done some time later with Bobi Wine, but most fans ignored it shortly after its release to focus on Eno Mic. Ziggy Dee during an interview with the Daily Monitor a few years back claimed to be working on a 24- track album that was supposed to re-define him as a big artiste in East Africa.

native Uganda is because Ugandans do not take time to listen to the lyrical richness of music but are taken up by musical beats. With a chorus such as ‘…Eno mic ya Ziggy Dee gwe tesaaga, Nebwojisokako mama osima… ’one is left wondering what musical richness he is referring to. Recent media reports say he is now focusing more on his hobbies, fine art and community development. He has been occasionally spotted at National Theatre and Hotel Africana selling art pieces modelled out of clay.

Who is Ziggy Dee?

I personally have not heard a track off that album so we can safely assume that mission failed. Some of the songs he has released since then include Doctor in which he featured Zazou of the X-Ray trio, Hakuna Matata, Kimansulo, Chana , Lollipop, Agawalahi and Mugoti. These have not been big in Uganda, but he says they have enjoyed good airplay on Tanzanian FM stations. In another interview, he stated that the reason he is bigger in Tanzania than his

He runs a campaign against human surcrifice in Uganda as General Manager. Uganda’s Talent Exposed At the age of 15, Sheeba Karungi joined the Obsessions, a performing group. After four years she decided to launch her own solo career and develop her talent.

Sheebah may not have been an archetypal runaway success, but her hard work, tenacity and grit seem to be finally paying off. “I have released several songs, some of which are gathering dust on the shelves. I also did a collabo with Kenya’s Jua Kali, but still it never pushed me where I wanted to be. Today, I think I have arrived,” She declares. For Sheebah, it has been more of confidence and a body than a voice. “I used to be rebuked and I received discouraging comments, but I resolved to prove my critics wrong. I am who I am now because I didn’t adhere to their disapprovals,” she says. 83 July.2014

Her tenacity and grit are paying off. Even though she has been criticized for signing under the management of Jeff Kiwa (The ex-Goodlyfe manager,) she believes they will go places. “I am on form, and under the guidance of Jeff, we shall go places” she says in selfpraise. Sheebah’s triumph stems from the fact that she had been lumped among the forever ‘upcoming’ artistes. She fought that infamous tag and in her current form, it is foolish to write her off. Critics have however found fault with her eccentric life-

style, which is likely to peg her career behind. Sheebah however maintains that it is the “crazy” in her that is taking her places. “The hardest part for me was getting off the ground to where I am today. I have the winning formula, and the only way for me is the top,” she bragged Her impressive discography includes over 17 songs, popular among which include; Ice Cream, Twesaana, How Many Times, Nkwetaaga, Nsindika Njake, Mundongo, Bad Boy and many others. She has indeed found her winning formula; she is the ideal comeback kid.

The Making Of A Hit...

‘Mulamwa’ By Toniks

Toniks is a Ugandan RNB Singer. He is also a song writer and producer. His hit single Mulamwa is doing well on the Ugandan airwaves. We caught up with him to find out about the making of Mulamwa.

T

ell chano8 about Toniks the artiste. What genre of music do you do? What else does Toniks do besides singing and performing?

I wrote the song mulamwa myself. The song was inspired by experiences from the Ugandan party scene; both my own and those of other individuals.

I am a recording and performing artiste. I love to play the guitar and sing. Besides singing and performing, I’m an audio producer and a song writer. I can also make tea and fried eggs though...

I can’t go specifics but play the song and listen to the lyrics...feel the mood and you’ll see what I mean. Pretty much picking a guy’s mind on a typical night out in UG, obviously the song is from a guy’s perspective.

I believe genre creatively confines us. My genre is foot music with influences of RnB and Afropop.

How different is the Mulamwa song from the other songs you have done in the past? What does it have to offer to the audience, what message/experience do you intend to share with the listeners of this song?

Now about Mulamwa, who wrote the song? What inspired the song? What is the story behind this song? Any personal experiences behind the making of the song?

90 July.2014

Sasha Vybz

Chano8

I go by the names Ian Akankwasa, I am a down to earth hardworking lad, I grew up in Uganda –Kampala. I am a professional filmmaker, music video director, Cinematographer, script writer and CEO SAVY FIMZ/SAVYMUSIC.

My Name: Sasha Vybz is a nickname I have heard back in primary school, I got the name Sasha from one of my best childhood male movie Characters Sasha, and always wanted to be like him…ha-ha. The name later got stuck on me. Historically Sasha is a Russian Unisex name, which means “Savior of Mankind”.

Education: After my Form 6 I decided to join Film school in Cape Town because I had so much passion for this field and as you know Cape town is the best destination for film studies in Africa since it gives first hand Hollywood techniques. I am currently in my final year at City Varsity School of Media and Creative Arts and I will be graduating next February.

What it takes:

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW 91 July.2014

Well first of all it takes passion and continuous practice to be good in this field and of course film studies to seal the deal, because by this you will be learning not only from the best but also new techniques.

Challenges: I tend to face many challenges here in Uganda in terms of finance, props and also having an effective team. Finance is still going to be an issue since the Ugandan music industry is still growing but am sure this will change with time.

Chano8

Sasha Vybz I also started up a record label company SAVY MUSIC back in 2013 and we manage artists like Beenie Gunter(Uganda) and Marrick Dane (South Africa). I worked with Globetek as a photographer and Videographer, but I later wanted to break free and start up my own Production Company. I decided to join film school to improve my skills and I never looked back. I cannot rate myself, I would rather leave that to the public but I can only say my work isn’t that bad and also everyday there is a lesson to learn

Rates: I would want to only discuss my video rates with interested clients but our prices vary and they are friendly. I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone out there. They can reach us any time and we discuss.

My Team: Well, I work with a team of young ambitious hardworking people both in Uganda and South Africa

Making a video: Well a good video starts with agood song and how well the artist put his lyrics to inspire a video director to make a good script. However, a good video is a video that will be able to show something fresh that people have not seen before and makes the audience understand with the way visuals are put across

My Work: I have worked on some TV shows like Jump Off on Urban TV and with a number of artists before I joined film school like Gift ov Kaddo, The late Mr X, Maro,Noisy Pricha, Mya (Blue 3) and Ceaserous. Since I joined film school I have so far worked with Face off based in South Africa, Sheebah, Chris Evans, Imon, Eddy Kenzo and Beenie Gunter. 92 July.2014

What determines the rates is the production value and concept you may want in your video.

The Future: In the next five years I see Savy Filmz as the biggest production house in Africa. Fingers crossed.

Clients: I look forward to working with Davido,Burna boy, Mafikizolo, ASA,Chameleone and Bebe Cool, we also have potential upcoming artists whose songs attract me. At the end of the day I love working with good songs and promising artists.

Inspiration: I honestly only look up to God, but am also inspired by a a few potential video directors like Benny Boom, Hype Williams, Collin Tiley,Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorcese.

The Celebrity Body You Can Have One Too!

Usher’s sexy six packs, Shakiras bikini body, Beyonce’s post baby body, JLos derriere capture, Jeniffer Hudson’s weight loss and the like grab the international media’s attention and are some of the most read articles.

I

n Uganda, its about Desire Luzindas body (and by the way she is looking great), Micheal Ross’ Abs, Logwash’s hips etc.

Entertainment is a business of first impressions. Undeniably, creating a unique image for which you will be known and remembered. It is part and parcel of the celebrity life. As a celebrity, you need to figure out who you are, what kind of image you want to be identified

96 July.2014

with and what kind of visual impression you want to leave in your fans minds. You need to look like a “Star”, for the public to buy your records, merchandise, the magazines you’re featured in and for them to pay to see you perform. A central part of this image, includes “the Celebrity body”. In Uganda, few celebrities spend time on building a proper body, the

gym is relegated and few follow a proper feeding regime. Hardly, any artiste can be found to have a personal trainer or dietician. However, in this day and age when people are extremely health conscious, it is key that your body projects a healthy lifestyle that fans across the board will want to associate with. Also clothes look fabulous on a body that is well proportioned and toned.

5 Steps to a great celebrity body Building a celebrity body is a project that will take time, resources and will power. It is important to have the right mindset to keep you going and the will power to make it happen. Find your motivation and keep it in mind. Are you going on a tour that will require you to show off your body on stage? Are you due for a PR campaign that requires a photo shoot? Is there a show that you will need to attend and expect paparazzi to be all over? Have a video shoot to promote your new song?

Chano8

YOUR HEALTH There is no one workout that fits all. Celebrities also have their trouble zones and must tailor their workout sessions accordingly. For example, a pear shaped Desire means her weight goes to her butt and thighs so her exercises have to target those problem areas. Apple shaped persons need to work on their midsection and exercise like the boxing and planks which engage the core from shoulder to belly and help them find their waist. Pear-shaped women need to avoid heavy-weighted exercises and too much cycling which would add bulk to their bottom half. Avoid any quad-centric exercise. Identify which parts of your body you want to or need to work on and focus on those. Do you have flabby arms, then challenge yourself with weights, for strong and healthy legs try the lunges, and for that flat celebrity tummy do those exercises specifically targeted at flattening the stomach. Top that up with a nicely shaped derriere by throwing in the lunges.

A Personal Instructor:

Personal trainers can design a workout fit for your individual needs. Having a personal trainer is like having a workout buddy, who will always motivate you and hold you accountable. Unlike working out with a buddy, a personal trainer won’t let you slack on how hard you work. A personal trainer will help you diversify your routine and prevent boredom. He would help you set goals and design exercises specifically meant to help you meet those goals in the least possible time. A personal trainers will also help you make sure you are moving the correct way to maximize your workout and prevent injury.

Dietician

While the personal instructor helps with the physical workout, the dietician will help you plan your diet in such a way that you can meet your goals. A dietician will make a plan for you that suits your health history, favorite foods, eating and exercise habits. They will help you set goals and prioritize as well as keep you focused on maintenance and monitoring progress. A dietician/nutritionist will help you develop a safe and effective plan that you can stick with for the long haul. They will use creative strategies to help with meal planning, grocery shopping, food journaling and mindful eating.

YOUR HEALTH

Chano8

While the personal instructor helps with the physical workout, the dietician will help you plan your diet in such a way that you can meet your goals.

Design An Exercise Regime:

Important exercises that are the back bone of any routine are the core exercises that target the main muscles of the body. Together with your personal instructor, design an exercise plan and schedule that is doable and fits within your lifestyle and activities. This will enable you to stick to the plan. Mix various exercises in order to avoid boredom. Some exercises to consider include swimming that targets all muscle groups especially the back, dancing, martial arts, boxing and circuit training. Some of the fun exercises we did in school for PE are actually great for the body, these include skipping and jumping jacks. Add in some Yoga, Zumba and Kick boxing to add spice and challenge the body to new levels of fitness.

Eat Right:

Yes our portion sizes are getting bigger, you get invited to cocktails and parties where food is in abundance but it’s important to keep focused on the plan. Diet is the single most important part of building a celebrity body. While there are other important factors to consider, diet is usually the deal breaker or maker. The importance of a correct diet and nutrition plan cannot be overlooked. Beware of portion size and the type of foods you eat. Be mindful of the calories eaten each day. Eat five pieces of fruit a day; water is a healthy option for a drink. Keep record of foods eaten. This can be done with the help of your dietician or nutritionist.

Some days will be bad, when you wake up and feel less inclined to do what it takes, but its important to keep focused on the goal, be positive and celebrate small victories as they will keep you motivated. 99 July.2014

Her View

T

Relationship

I dated this guy who I was really in sync with. He was everything I wanted. Only problem is every time I told him I loved him he only kissed me and said “Awww, how sweet baby. You’re the best”. I have since moved on to someone I am “compatible” with, who is not afraid to tell me he loves me and have grown to love. My ex is now professing his love for me to an extent of proposing. Should I go back? The relationship was exciting and had a chemistry that I am not feeling with my current guy.

hese days the phrase “I love you” is so misused that it is not taken seriously. Not to dwell on why you left your ex but it could be that he never took your proclamation of affection seriously from the way you said it or second he was not ready to commit that way to you. Nowadays women find it easier than men to say I love because to them it means they are agreeing to exclusivity and also acknowledging the seriousness of the relationship. Some men (my kind of men) do not believe in settling down until they have achieved their personal goals after which they then go ahead to settle down to start a family.

he sees you’re the only viable candidate for the position….and lastly after you left him he has been through a series of bad girlfriends and now realizes that you were ‘The one’ that got away and he is ready to sing I love you on top of roof tops and do whatever it takes to have and keep you. This might sound like a lot of wishful thinking but sometimes it happens. In regards to lack of chemistry with your current guy, I think that shouldn’t be an issue. Am assuming by the time you got together there was some chemistry at first that is faded now. You can’t dwell on chemistry throughout the relatiomship just like fireworks and sparks it doesn’t last. Usually after 6 month or if you are lucky 2 years, the chemistry winds down and the realistic part of love sets in. Relationships require work to rekindle the chemistry at all times and to keep it fresh.

Your ex is now coming back to you and is proposing, this could be for a number of reasons. First of all he could just be having the blues. He looks at you and wonders what could have been In my opinion, you need closure with the first relationand in his attempt to figure that out he tries to ship to enable you to move on without looking back. reconnect. Find out how you feel about your ex, are you willing to try again and risk losing your current man over it? This does not mean his promises and propos- From the way you presented this dilemma, it seems als are genuine because these emotions are like you already have reasons you want to go back to often fleeting. Second he could have managed him. You should think about yourself, what you want to achieve his goals, is now ready to settle and and go for it. When you figure that out all will be well

Dilema S

His Take

eems to me that your ex has a serious case of ‘You don’t know what you have till its gone.’ Well leaving him is certainly the wake up call he needed so that was a smart move. This shouldn’t be too much of a dilemma really.

From a man’s perspective I do not think your ex is being sincere. As an adult male he should have taken your relationship seriously from the start if he wanted you to be in his life. You need to ask yourself why he was reluctant to commit. There are two possible reasons for this behavior. The first is that he was probably committed in another relationship and you were his subsidiary girl. Who knows he could even have been married. He therefore could have been feeling guilty for his double liaison and couldn’t bring himself round to professing his love for you. The other reason could be that he just didn’t see a future with you. In this case he probably was in it for the sex if you guys were being intimate and he simply wanted to string you along. Men caught up in such a dilemma may desire the woman for purely selfish reasons and are not willing to go the whole nine yards. My two cents would be to be very wary of this guy. If a man hesitates when it comes to matters of the heart then there is something holding him back. This is a red flag that you should put into perspective. One the reasons why he is back in the picture running after you could be because he wants to pick up from where you two left off. He is desperate and that is why he is even promising to propose to you. Judging from his past record you cannot ascertain if indeed he is serious about these claims or if he wants to string you along again under a different calculated guise. Politely but firmly tell him you cannot go down that road again with him and ask him to leave you alone. It may be wise to break communication with him for he is likely to persist like a problem child that simply can’t take the word 103July.2014

no. Breaking communication will enable you to clear your head and focus on what you have. You do not need someone to remind you constantly about the dying embers of a failed relationship. You should focus on your current boyfriend because from the start he demonstrated maturity in that he wasn’t afraid of committing to you. He most likely sees a long-term future with you and is in it for the long haul. In my experience I have learned that chemistry is a fickle figment that young people choose to pay too much attention to. What is chemistry anyway? Are you willing to risk your chances of a promising relationship in pursuit of chemistry with a man who is neither here nor there? You need to be mature about the situation and ask yourself what you are looking for. The goal of any relationship should be marriage and settling down and anything that falls short will leave you heart broken and feeling used. Focus on what is important. You also need to find different ways of spending quality time with your boyfriend. Be creative and you’ll realize that there are a myriad of things that couples can do together. Take walks, go to the beach, go shopping, catch a movie, go swimming, go for coffees, visit an art gallery, the list is endless. If you try some of these things you will realize that you have similar likes and tastes and that you have more in common than you think you do. A relationship needs hard work and time to flourish so you need to be willing to put these in. Good luck

The husband responds by assuring his wife to be patient as he works for a living for this family. He reminds her that all he is doing is for their benefit as a family. It is produced by 2k from 2Heavy records. Home Is Best has an English title but is in Luganda. In it he is encouraging his friend not to forget her roots, but to always make time to visit her family members. He reprimands people who become well to do and do not support their family that was left behind. In Kingereza produced in Reverb, Big Eye is showcasing his capability of speaking in English. In it he sings to his lady in English and reassures her that she is his queen and he is her King. However, its not all English, apparently in some cases Big Eye feels that English is not sufficient to express himself adequately. The last song Nkyuse is a song in Swahili and Luganda in which he praises his new lady for changing him and making him a better man. It was produced in Jeeb Studio. Big Eye thanks his producers, his fiancee, the Big Musik team, his fans and management for working with him to make this album what it is.

Bobi Wine & Mr G This Jamaican and Ugandan collaboration has been a massive hit ever since it hit the air waves at the beginning of the year. The Love song is a slow Ragga - dance hall combination with its theme revolving around a love struck young lady confused and trapped in a love triangle. She is in love with two men; One is a ghetto youth while the other is an uptown loaded guy. She confesses to being madly in love and torn between the two. She is confused and can’t seem to make a decision because they both have someting different to offer. Cindy does the chorus in a soulful pitch, pouring her heart out to the two men whose assignment at this time is to convince her that they are the right person for her. Mr G (Jamaica) plays the Uptown guy in this video, done by Twisted Films, and does it perfectly. We are also introduced to the Ragga maffin ghetto youth, Bobi Wine. Bobi Wine has skills in this video and he dresses Cindy in a dress he tailor made just for her. However, the director pulled it off with a simple concept for a low badget video shoot. The transitions are slow with moderate effects created in the loops as we only see about three scenes in the video to match the dance moves. The camera angles also suggest the use of only a single camera per instance. Overall Paddyman’s masterpiece audio produced from Audio One, is well showcased in a simple but effective video which may be the reason this song has continued to dominate airwaves and looks set to stay put. 117 July.2014

Chameleone’s Manager Attacked.

D

isgruntled members from Jose Chameleone’s disbanded Leone Island are beefing. The hangers on, who include former bouncer JB and Kim Swagga, made life hard for Chameleone’s new manager, Robert Nkuuke, a.k.a Mutima, at Club Silk.

The manager, who turned up with his date at the Pallaso, King Saha and Sheeba’s unplugged night, came under a torrent of abuse from JB, who branded him a villager fit for suburban pubs like Eden Service Park in Bwaise. He openly wondered, why a manager wouldn’t fly with his client out of the country, in reference to the fact that Chameleone flew for a European tour without Nkuuke. As this happened in the corridors, Kim Swagga cynically laughed and prodded JB to start a fight. The defenceless manager fled the place, abandoning his date.

Bobi Wine loses Shs 70m ‘Size Yo’ Deal

G

hetto gladiator, Bobi Wine believes that what Chameleone earns, he (Bobi Wine) should earn double that amount.

We have exclusively learnt that that is how he lost a ninety million Uganda Shillings deal with Crown Bottlers (CBL), the holder of the Pepsi franchise in Uganda. A company insider tells Chano8 that before crown bottlers unveiled their 330ml PET bottles in May, they approached Bobi Wine with the proposal of doing a song. The song would be released during the launch of the new product, just as it was with Jose Chameleone and the previous Moto Moto campaign, where free cars were given.

120 May.2014

“We called Bobi Wine and briefed him. We even suggested the name Size Yo. He was supposed to do a song Size Yo and then two weeks later, we would tweak it and use it for Pepsi. He asked for ninety million Uganda Shillings and yet when Chameleone did Moto Moto, he got sixty million Uganda Shillings,” The source says. After rejecting an upward bargain of sh70m, Bobi recorded it hastily and released it even before any official agreement was done. Within three days of the brief, Bobi Wine had already done the song, which many see as an attack on his nemesis, Bebe Cool. Even though he missed on the Pepsi millions, Bobi Wine looks to cash in when he launches Size Yo on 18th October at One Love beach, Busabala!

frica’s reigning Queen of Comedy Anne Kansiime Ojok is going places, with tour dates in UK, America and Australia coming up this year.

However as Kansiime takes on a journey to conquer the world with her infectious brand of comedy, the one person who isn’t fully smiling with her is Gerald Ojok. Sources close to the couple tell us that after their Kuhingira (traditional marriage ceremony) in Kabale District last year, Kansiime’s biggest worry was getting used to being addressed by the extra name Ojok. This is now the least of her worries. Her biggest worry has now become how to deal with her sulking husband, who has failed to comprehend her busy schedule. Ojok, a lecturer at Kyambogo University, reportedly confided his discomfort to a few friends, as he cried into his Club Beer glass. Ann Kansiime spends more time in Nairobi where she hosts a show “Don’t Mess with Kansiime” on Citizen TV.

Daxx Kartel learns Kenya lesson.

121 July.2014

Meanwhile, she was recently named the brand manager of Old Mutual, a finance services firm. Through her, they intend to educate the Kenyan masses on the importance of taking up insurance and financial planning. Kansiime joins other celebrities including Larry Madowo, TerryAnne Chebet, Wilbroda, Dennis Mugo alias OJ and Vitimbi actor Mogaka who are also involved in the campaign.

F

ast rising singer, Daxx Kartel, real names Sulaiman Ssebunya will probably take some time before visiting Kenya again.

The Luga-latino singer currently rising high on his collaboration, “Self-Service” with Sheebah Karungi, was recently robbed clean while on a sojourn in Uhuru Kenyatta’s land. Chano8 has learnt that the Luga-Latino star was recently booked for shows in Nairobi and Mombasa for which he was promised five million Uganda Shillings for each of the shows. The artiste, had two successful shows. But rather than safely tuck his loot away, Daxx Kartel, who never travelled with his management team, chose to hit Nairobi’s hot spots, without bothering to know why people now call it ‘Nairobbery’. He was reportedly robbed at knife point as he approached Florida 2000 Discotheque, also well-known as ‘F2’, on Moi Avenue. He claims he lost over twelve million Uganda Shillings, a leather belt and a phone. He relied on his Kenyan contacts to raise money for bus fare back home! The Kampala University Mass Communication graduate has vowed May.2014 not to step in Kenya any time soon!
