Pastor Wilson Bugembe Hosts Local Celebrities At his Light The World Church

There was excitement all over Nansana last month as local Celebrities from all over Uganda descended on Pastor Wilson Bugembe’s Light The World Church in Nansana along Hoima road in Wakiso District.

T

he church was already packed to capacity by 10AM with a few seats left for invited guests and those reserved for celebrities on the front rows and on the ‘high table’ Celebrities were treated to a red carpet welcome for the ‘Celebrity Sunday’ service hosted by Bugembe himself. There was the usual glitz and glamour associated with celebrities as well as hysteria as locals and the congregation were treated to free access to their favourite celebrities who included musicians, actors, comedians TV and Radio personalities, DJs, song writers and Record producers. Politicians led by former Kampala lord Mayor Alhaji Nasser Ntege Sebagala, current Mayor Elias Lukwago, EALA representative Fred Mukasa Mbidde were not left out. The celebrities were received with loud cheers and ululations as they

36

Chano8. February 2015

made their way through the red carpet to reserved seats in front of the rest of the congregation with cameras from different media houses cameras capturing all the proceedings as well as a live broadcast on NTV. Gagamel boss Bebe Cool, Juliana Kanyomozi, comedienne Anne Kansiime and Ghetto President Bobi Wine received the biggest cheers and also gave inspiring testimonies. However the congregation was brought to its feet when super traditional herbalist Sylvia Namutebi aka Mama fiina made a grand entrance with wild cheers ushering her to the high table, followed shortly by Desire Luzinda and Alhaji Ntege Ssebagala who caused quite a stir when they sat next to each other. PERFORMANCES What is a celebrity gathering without performances? When Juliana took to the podium to give her testimony about her life’s journey and sang ‘Kanyimbe’ she left many in tears and received a standing ovation from fellow celebrities. Comedian Mendo of funfactory who is

known for imitating President Yoweri Museveni fooled everyone in the church when the MC announced that ‘the president was coming in’ and the congragation stood still only for Mendo to show up to the amusement of everyone. He then gave a ‘speech’ thanking Bugembe for inspiring him into music and sent the congregation into a bouts of laughter when he claimed Lukwago had vision by attending the celebrity mass unlike the Besigye’s who were missing. Other performances were from the Devine dancers, The Cape Brothers and the Church‘s praise and worship choir who also put up electric performances. STAR- STUDDED CONGREGATION As expected, the celebrity Sunday had all sorts of local celebrities in attendance that also attracted locals from the neighborhood and the usual Church members. Among them were top Musicians and surprise guests who included; Singer Cindy, comedian Amooti, NTV’s Miles Rwamiti, Afrigo’s Joanita Kawalya, Benon Mugumbya of Swangz, Producer Nessim, Miss Uganda Leah Kalanguka, Geofrey Lutaya and Wife Irene Namatovu, Halima Namakula, Socialite Judith Heard, Singer Chirs Evans, Aziz Azion, Exodus of Igwe fame, Katongoloe Omutongole and wife Titie Tabel, Ebonies’ Julie Underwood, King Saha of Mulirwana fame, Maro, Mun G, GNL Zamba, Khalifa Aganaga, comedian Pablo, Rebecca Jjingo, Abbey Mukiibi, Catherine Kusasira, John Segawa, Ruth Wanyana, Sofia Gombya, Producers Crouch and Paddy Man, Dembe’s Bina Baibe, Eddie Yawe, Levixone, Coopy Bly, Nince Henry, David Lutalo, Hanington Bugingo, Douglas Lwanga, MC Kats and many others.

AKANTU ALBUM Launch By David Lutalo

"David Lutalo made a huge statement at Hotel Africana- People's space when he successfully held his Akantu Album launch. The demunitive versatile singer pulled a massive crowd which he treated to a memorable performance"

T

hank you so much my fans, you have really pushed me to another level". These were the words of a humbled and overwhelmed David Lutalo said to his fans at the end of a massivley attended show. While the action went on, Lutalo's fans engaged in debate. They all agreed that it was a lovely performance he had put up with his thought provoking songs like Engumba Zange, Okutte Wagumu and Yamba.

scene as a Kadongo Kamu artiste, with the innuendo laden Kapapaala song in2008, filling the venue to the brim said alot about his successful musical journey. Most of fans were the down town crowds famed for spending with abandon. They cheered as he performed songs like Mubbi Bubbi featuring Maro (who was conspiciously absent), Helena and Akantu. Before Lutalo made it on stage dressed in a hideous ‘helmet’ and a spotless white suit there had been performances from Rena Nalumansi, Sheebah and Pallaso, Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine among others

Bebe Cool personally praised Lutalo for being a versatile artiste with one of the best vocals in the country at the moment. Engineer Byandaala , the Minister for Works and Transportation was chief guest and auctioned CDs raising over 10m. With his manager, Dennis Orone, beaming next to him, Lutalo closed with a promise “Expect the For someone who burst onto the best from me in 2015!" They were so carried away by his music, that some argued that he had what it takes to be considered among the top five musicians on the land. He wasn’t just at another level; he was at the top most level with the likes of Bebe Cool, Goodlyfe, Jose Chameleone, and Bobi Wine.

BEBE COOL DOMINATES HIPIPO AWARDS WINNING SIX MAJOR AWARDS

The Hipipo awards were held early this month at the wonderworld (Former Didi's world) auditorium in Kansanga. There were several artistes and individuals who were rewarded for thier contribution to music. Chano8 brings highlights

I

t was a big night to remember for Gagamel boss Bebe Cool as he dominated the Hipipo awards walking away with 6 awards.

The 3rd Edition of the Hipipo awards, were held at Wonderworld in Kansanga where several artistes were rewarded for work done in 2014. It was however not a big surprise for many observers to see Bebe Cool walk with away with all the 6 awards as his blockbuster song ‘Love You Everyday’ dominated airwaves last year resulting to a whooping 10 nominations. Bebe Cool who won the Artistes of the year award among others, turned up with wife Zuena Kimera for the awards and was fully backed up by the energetic Gagamel Phamily who also scooped the best fan's group award. He later performed his top songs 'Everywhere I go' and 'Love you Everyday' to the excitement of the crowd who cheered him throughout the evening’s proceedings.

64

Chano8. February 2015

The highlight of the evening was served by Sheebah Karungi who excitedly ran onto the stage when she was called up as the best female artiste. And of course, Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine sharing the same stage for the first time in a very long time after being invited by Joanita Kawalya while receiving the lifetime achievement award. She acknowledged Bebe Cool, Bobi Wine and Navio for their immense contribution to the Ugandan music industry. Bebe Cool won Artist of the Year, Male artiste of the year, Best concert, Video of the year, Best Reggae song and Best fans group (Gagamel Phamily). The surprise of the night was, Jose Chameleone and Bobi Wine who walked away empty handed and Ziza Bafa controversially beating new star A Pass to the men's breakthrough award with the crowd yelling in disaproval. Radio and Weasel were the other big winners walking away with four awards.

Chano8 ASK RWAMITI

Truth about Love AN

Q& A

Miles Rwamiti is a presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.

F

irst of all, I don’t believe in valentines day, I don’t believe there should be only one day to show love to your loved one. that is not love. My definition of love is that it is an intimate feeling and one should express his/her love everyday. You don't just wake up meet this one and that one, then you're in love all the time. What we see in the music industry at most times is just excitement which is why they don’t last in these relationships. Because so and so has a hit and 'I also have a song so we should link up and start dating' but there is no real relationship. I believe 90%of couples here don’t truly love each other, just because a guy bought a car and has a job he is eligible for marriage from the view of the single ladies around him. He also starts looking for a wife. This is where you find a few years down the road this couple is in the same house but barely talk, they have separate bedrooms and are seeing other people. That is not love or marriage. Luckily in other countries a divorce is very easy, even after 3 weeks, but here the case is different hence people remain in unhappy relationships.

Ask Rwamiti 84

Chano8. February 2015

Most girls believe after she graduates, the next thing is find a guy, who works in the bank or some big office, after that, she now wants a wedding just because her friends and family believe she is of age. Many women don’t realize that most men you meet don’t actually want you and want to have fun. It is

ASK RWAMITI Chano8

D CELEBRITY COUPLES low musicians and celebrities. Take for example Mayinja (Ronald) his wife didn’t know about his music career, but fell in love with him because of who he was. Jose chameleone's wife Daniella is not a musician. But there are those that fall in love with their spouses because of the nature of their work.

Chameleone and Daniella after the wedding that she now realizes she needs a job. I see a lot of beautiful women at Serena (NTV offices) here looking for men instead of jobs. When you don’t know the person you are marrying your relationship can never last. No one should marry someone they have not stayed with for more than a year, you don’t know who you are marrying. In our days while growing up, when you brought a girlfriend, your father would ask you which family she is from and always insisted we should know the family you marry into which now a days translates to the same thing I was saying, get to know your partner before you plan your future with her. I don't believe in marriage, I believe in introductions. Marriages are earthly things. The traditional settings are about honoring a ladies' family, making promises and commitment to the family too. Same as valentines day-

In our days growing up, when you brought a girlfriend, he would ask you which family is she from and always insisted we should know the family you marry into which now a days translates to the same thing I was saying, get to know your partner before you plan your future with her. my wife has tried to get me into it, but it is not me. Back to artistes, you will find most artistes that have stable marriages are those who met before they become 'anybody' or their spouses aren’t fel-

Like Lutaya (Godfrey) and Namatovu (Irene) met at work but took their time and married years later. They are a good example of musicians with a good marriage. Their music rivals but not their relationship, if you have noticed ‘Ku jagaana’ is a huge hit and ‘Lwezza’ is down now but this is not affecting their marriage. Ndagire(Mariam) and Segawa also met through the nature of their work. There is another breed of upcoming artists that just go out there looking for older, rich women to support thier music which is not love even if they start living together. Media attention has also contibuted to to celebrity breakups, but then again, it’s the people who call for it, trying to use it to promote music and shows. The problem is if you're everywhere following your spouse, you know the focus will be about your relationship. I believe some couples act professional like Radio and Lillian Mbabazi who have tried to keep their family life out of the media and individually concentrated on their careers. If every celebrity couple could let their private lives be private, they would be doing well. I am happy to see relationships flourish and everyday should be taken to celebrate and shower your loved one with affection.

Chano8 SPECIAL FEATURE

Love In The Music Industry Hook Ups And The Break Ups “February is the month of love and our artistes are no exception. While some will take time off to celebrate love with their hook ups others will curse the very onset of love. "

F

ebruary is the month of love and our artistes are no exception. While some will take time off to celebrate love with their hook ups others will curse the very onset of love. The hook ups and the break ups have been there over the past year. Whereas some have been documented with children and engagement parties to show, others are treated like rumours. Some rumours have however refused to go away, which gives them a semblance of truth. In Uganda and the rest of the world, celebrities hook up and break up every day but some have stuck together into 2015. We delve into some of the hook ups and break ups. • Diamond Platinumz and Zari When Tanzanian singer Diamond Platinumz hobnobbed with one time singer and socialite Zari it was termed ‘a new project.’ The new project is all the rage and it has been confirmed that the two are actually lovers. What we cannot prove is that

Famed to have a harem of women, Weasel (Douglas Seguya) finally chose "The One" recently. He and Samira Tumusiime are now like peas in a pod. She gave birth to her first and Weasel’s nth born child. Weasel looks genu-

inely happy around her. Seeing the love birds go about their thing, it is believable that Weasel’s brother Akay (AK 47) forgave both of them. Weasel allegedly snatched Samira from his young brother. • M.C. Kats and Fille Mutoni. Are they, are they not? It is said that when Rema belted out her tune Mchuzi, it was in appreciation to Eddie Kenzo’s good loving. One wonders why Kadongo Kamu’s Matthias Walukagga

The latest was that he is itching to settle down and has finally found that one thing missing in his life. She is called Matilda and it is rumoured his mother Dr. Maggie Kigozi has given the seal of approval. ANSELL Stylish Dresses For The Modern Woman

Any female or fashion conscious person with a Facebook and Instagram account has probably seen the numerous adverts from Ansell Dresses which always have stylish dresses for the modern woman of all sizes. When we asked many of their shoppers, they said, they loved the shop mainly because of the stylish clothes that aren’t common and it is the place you will find original dresses and shoes in all sizes, and if they don’t have them, they can always deliver.

W

e decided to pay a visit to the store that is located in Kabalagala on Kingsgate mall 1st floor room F18 And F19. Luckily when we arrived, the owner was around, Olive Ansell (which is her marital name was very welcoming and didn’t hesitate to tell us about the origin of Ansell shops. Chano8: When did you get the idea for Ansell dresses? Mrs Ansell: The concept was conceived in 2012, it was my son’s birthday and we lived in Egpyt where my husband worked at the time, I didn’t have much time, so I decided I would get a dress in Kampala which proved to be a difficult task. My size was difficult to find and when I found one it was expensive and the quality lacking. I decided when our stay in Egypt is done, I would go back to the United States and start my store. The store started online. I bought some dresses and put them on Facebook. People liked them, so I would buy and ship them to my sister who would deliver to the customers. And we did that for a while, actually from July 2012 to Feb 2013. Chano8 : When did the store open? Mrs Ansell: Well, in 2013 we realized the orders were increasing and shipments per order took some time, it was time to open a store. My sister and I

90

opened the first store in Titanic plaza in town. We stayed there until July. The space was small we needed to move. We found this mall (Kingsgate, Kabalagala) still under construction. We moved here after it was completed. We had a number of customers who are loyal so they transitioned with us and came all the way here. Chano8 :What kind of women do you dress? Mrs Ansell: We try to cater for pretty much everyone. I can guarantee you every woman will walk in here and find her size of of dresses. From size 0 to 44 wide USA. The dresses and outfits are for cocktails, dates, evenings out, office or just something nice for every once in a while. The shoes are for every woman, we have high heels, sandals, pumps, boots, sneakers and all the other types. We have a little bit of everything for everyone.

All the clothes are from the major stores in the States we think of the clothes that suit the shop and our customers and that is what we get. Since I live in the States, I buy the clothes and ship them to my sister who runs the store with the help of my oldest friend. Our customers vary and some find that cheap, so we are thinking of getting a section with some long dresses of a lower price for that sector of our clients. But we like to maintain our quality of clothes too. Chano8: Any tips for the trendy woman say for valentines day? Mrs Ansell: I believe I am old fashioned and I believe red is the color of love. You can spice it up, change a few things, maybe with accessories, but red should be on your outfit. There

are very many shades of every color so no one can fail to style up that old red and black to make it trendy. We have an entire Valentines day section which started end of January and all our customers should come see it. Chano8: Any ideas of romantic activities for this valentine’s day? Mrs Ansell: Lol. I think all people are different, what I consider romantic might not work for someone else. It depends on the couple. Some might go for a romantic dinner get away, some a group date or a family thing too. As for me, I will be back in the States, My husband and I will go watch ’50 Shades of Grey’ that is where my plan ends but you never know if he has some surprises in store.

NAMELESS COVER STORY

David Mathenge and wife Wahu Kagwi are a famous couple from Kenya. Thier unique love and romance story has lasted for more than a decade. Both are Artistes with top charting hits across East Africa. Chano8 got in touch with the celebrity couple to share thier story in this year's special lover's issue of Chano8 Magazine.

WAHU'S TAKE Qn: How did you meet? Was it love at first sight? We met at a University function through a mutual friend. We clicked immediately, as if we’d been friends for a long time. He made me laugh without even trying! I definitely wanted to meet him again and again, though I had to pretend to play hard-to-get

Qn: What are the top 5 most attractive attributes about your Husband

His dedication to his family, his sensitive nature, his easy going temperament (he doesn’t anger easily), his sense of leadership and his good looks!!!

Qn: Music is a huge part of your lives, could

you say it brought you closer?

Qn: You are a mother, singer and wife do you ever relax?

Yes I do. When the kids are asleep (after 8:30PM) I manage to catch some “me time”, before I get into my song¬ writing mode.

Qn: How would you describe being married to a fellow artist?

I would say in the sense that, we both enjoy writing and creating music. He contributes to my creative process, as do I to his. We are both interested and passionate about each other's career, and support each other in the same, so yes, it has brought us closer in that sense

Lol! Everyone always asks this. I find it very normal, perhaps because I have nothing I can personally compare it with. The one thing that’s second nature to us is that we never let our work, or public image interfere with our home lives. Diapers still have to be changed, homework still has to be done, bed time stories still have to be

We talk – a lot! We are also best of friends, but over and above all, we love each other.

I’ve learnt to focus on what's really important, and that’s our family. We are trying to raise normal balanced children, and to do so, we have to be balanced as well. If we listen to people’s opinion of us, it can easily throw us off. However, I’ve also learned to take in the positive vibes from people who wish us well and support us

That was quite an episode. Some blogger was merely trying to generate hits on his site and decided that we a good means to do that. So created an entire story from scratch. I’m used to people fabricating stories about me, but what angered me was that he brought our children into these lies. That is an absolute no go zone. As a result, my hubby and I had to spend a lot of time managing our 8 year old, as she had heard stories in school. Bloggers need to think before they act. What happens if my 2nd born grows up and reads these lies on the internet (the internet is a permanent record) that’s another thing I know I will at some point in the future have to manage. – But did the blogger in question think about the impact his false story would have on my kids? No. He just needed to drive traffic to his site.

Just so you know, I’m Nameless' No.1 fan! I can’t choose one favorite….i love all of them! Even the ones that haven’t been released yet!

I’m also into hair product manufacturing and distribution, which is hectic but very good too. That said, music is my first love….i can never stay away from it. I’m actually back in studio and hoping to release something very soon.

Qn: What do you think it takes to have a successful marriage?

It takes understanding, forgiveness, friendship, love, and most of all, it takes God

WAHU AND NAMELESS Chano8

NAMELESS Qn: You did a song in luganda, how interesting is that? Please share what inspired it. Well I have had a close relationship with Uganda since 2002 and they have supported me for long through the years. During one of my many tours in Uganda, a Ugandan fan challenged me to learn some Luganda. This inspired the idea to do a song in Luganda to say thank you to my Uganda fans. 'Butterfly' (Kiwojolo) is a love song from a man to a woman of a different background. The man needs to learn her language to communicate his feelings to her. He also teaches her his language .

Hmmmm… simple intimate dinner in a far away place under the stars next to an isolated wood cabin… talking about how we first met and how far we have come. A little alchohol and icecream to set the mood, maybe we jump into a jacuzzi after that and make some sweet love!! hehehe

Qn: Have you ever worked on any music project or plan to work on any together?

Yes.. many have asked us that. We will definitely release a song or two together if and when we feel it right!

Qn: Tell us about your wife, was it love at first sight? How, where did you meet?

Qn: How do you deal with stories about your

Yes I would say as soon as I met her, I was sure I wanted to know her better and as soon as I knew her, I said to myself she would be my wife. I met her when I was 21 years as a college student at a campus function.

We are used to it. We ignore them unless they go too far , like recently they brought my kids into their rumour mongering and I made it clear that they should leave our kids out of their lies and exaggerations .

Qn: What are the most attractive attributes of your wife?

Qn: You must be a fan of Wahu (the musician) Your favourite songs and moments?

Physically I feel for her eyes, her warm smile. She also has a banging body! Shes a natural African beauty. Her kind and vivacious personality is also an attractive attribute that draws many to her.

Yup I am her number one fan! Well I would say “sweet love” because she wrote a song about our first born daughter who is special to both of us. And “kibowwow”also amazed me on how good a song writer she is.

Qn: How did you realize you were ready to tie the knot?

Qn: Besides music, and being a husband/parent you must be involved in many other things (businesses) as well. How do you manage to juggle all these?

Three weeks after I met her, I knew I would want to marry her but I was still young and not financially stable to start a family. When I finished college and my music career had stabilized and she was also financially independent, we felt we were ready to come together and join forces! We had dated 6 years then so we knew each other well, both strengths and weaknesses.

Qn: Career (music) and family what comes

first?

Family comes first. Music provides for my family.

Qn: You are constantly in the public’s eye. How is it being married to a fellow celebrity? It can be hard because people come up with all sorts of rumours to create a story. We have many well wishers but we also have negative people who wish bad things for us. However we are used to it and have learned to live with it because you cannot please everyone. Just live your life by your own rules.

Qn: Describe your ideal romance or way to show love to your wife (esp.during valentines day) Chano8. February 2015

marriage (falling apart) in the media?

Not easy but one needs a high level of discipline to know when to put one thing aside and take over another. There are times I am in the mood to write music yet we are meant to have a family outing!! Or I have a client on my neck to deliver a production. Can be hard but compromise and discipline is key. And an understanding wife!

Qn: You have been together for close to a decade any words of wisdom you can share with our readers regarding relationships and marriage?

Its all about perspective and how you look at the positive side of things and not dwell on the negative things. Let no one lie that marriage is all perfect. There are some hard times that require you to be very understanding of your partner. You need to learn how to live with someone's good days and bad days. You need to be open with each other and talk about your fears and expectations. Support each others dreams and compromise as much as you can.

ARTISTES AND

When Musicians Hunt For Love And Loyalty From Fans It takes more than just a good voice to scale the ladders in music. If in doubt ask Maurice Kirya. When he woke up to the realization that size and numbers (read fan base) are what it takes to create good music, he has scaled the heights.

M

aurice Kirya’s path to success has not been the same as that of traditional artistes. While most artistes in Uganda have relied greatly on their songs receiving massive airplay, with the fans naturally falling in place, Kirya has relied on creating his fan base. He does it using his social media. For this alone he has climbed to the top.

sorts. He meets the fans there.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of how much Kirya has successfully navigated online media to help his career is in how he won the most prestigious music award in his career so far-the 2010 RFI award.

Enter Gagamel Phamily ambassadors.

Kirya admits that he won the award purely relying on campaigning for his supporters to take 5 minutes, log onto the internet and click a vote for him. The voters in the 2010 RFI award couldn’t all have been Ugandans. “Most of my fans who voted for me were from all over the world. They interacted with my music and personality on My Space, You Tube and Twitter. It is for these fans that I am called an International musician whose nationality happens to be Ugandan” Kirya jokes. However in December 2012, Kirya ceased to personally manage his social media accounts. He hired a team. For some of Kirya’s fans who were accustomed to his personal interactive touch, it was a bit of a disappointment. He recently went back on the decision and personally updates. This has helped him regain the genuine relationship he once shared with the fans; his Sound Cup coffee shop at Garden City is a Mecca of Chano8. February 2015

Like Kirya knows, you cannot discredit the power of the fans. These fans spend their time and money to promote their favourite musicians’ works, including new songs, videos and concerts. They share links online, fight “wars” for their stars and even call into radio and TV to request for their favourite artistes’ music. They have given marketing and promotion of music a very interesting angle.

It wasn’t by accident that Bebe Cool was nominated in the category of the best use of social media award in the Hi Pipo Music Awards 2015. If ever there is an artiste who has mastered the art of creating genuine relationships with members of his growing fan base, it is Bebe Cool. His Gagamel phamily, comprising hundreds of enthusiastic super fans working to strengthen his fan base is among the most successful among all artistes in East Africa. The Gagamel phamily is so wide spread, they have presence in UK, Dubai, USA although the biggest concentration is in Kampala. The fans both youthful and middle aged have a common goal. To promote their artiste. As Gagamel phamily, their interaction isn’t only on social media. According to Bebe Cool, fostering personal relationships is more fruitful than social media alone. He argues that when they meet physically, it is a win-win. “Both you and your fan are happy. You continue to grow and your fan contin-

According to Dennis Asiimwe, a music critic, social networking is the future of the music industry and every musician should prepare their online presence.

KUZAALA KU JAGAANA Irene Namatovu

C

hano8 met up with Irene Namatovu the amazing songstress behind the now trending cultural folk song ‘KUZAALA KUJAGAANA’

Irene Namatovu is a founder member of the New Eagles Band. She is also the wife to Geofrey Lutaya the leader of the band. Her new song 'Kuzaala Ku Jagaana has taken the airwaves by storm

What inspired the song ‘ku jagaana’? I wanted to do a cultural song for a while and I wanted to do it the old fashioned way, the way we did it in high school with the voice tremor, so I called a good friend of mine Jamie Culture who is also an upcoming artist. I wanted to do a cultural song and I wanted it to center on a girl’s transition from a child to graduation and then entering a relationship or marriage. Basically a guideline on how a girl should behave in marriage too. Who wrote it, Give us a brief journey of the song? Well, as I mentioned, I called Jammy Culture to help me with the song. He suggested instead of the topic I wanted I should sing about the Kabaka because few women sing about it. I was big headed and insisted on the song being about the

girl child and marriage, I believed it would appeal to every occasion. So after the first draft was done. I asked my husband Geofrey (Lutaya) to take a look at it. He did some more editing and made it perfect. Where was the song recorded and produced? It was recorded by Brian from Brian studios. Its is next to Club Ambiance. That song took a while, we practiced and practiced, I liked the song, but I could feel it's not yet right. It was later, after a whole year, when finally everything came together and the song sounded perfect. Tell us about the making of the Video. The video required me to go back and practice the Kiganda dance for 3 weeks just to remind myself, maybe also to be a bit more fit. I had a lot of help with the video, I had the concept of what I wanted already. Kiika Troupe did the back up dancers and they were amazing. The costumes were all made by a lady named Suky Suky. The video was shot on Kavumba recreation grounds. Newton MaxStudios shot the video and I was proud of the work.

Alex MUHANGI Alex Muhangi is a standup comedian and music producer who is redefining the game in his different fields of work. Chano8 got a chance to meet with the hilarious comedian and this is how it went down.

W

hat motivates you to do comedy?

(Laughs) there is nothing that really motivates me. This whole journey started with Standup Uganda in 2009. I like to take on challenges and this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass on, because growing up, my friends used to always refer to me as a funny guy. When parties came around, people would call me up to just go and hang with them because they knew I would crack them up. I think the main thing that pushes me is that, every time I jump on stage I have to do new material, it’s sort of a challenge and motivation as well. Do you meet any challenges when coming up with material for your comedy shows? No, I don’t. Every day I hear a new joke written by a random guy. I think people are funnier than us the comedians because when I get on my social media channels, I find so many jokes from people. The material is overwhelming, every other day there is something new to talk about. Okay that’s interesting, tell us Chano8. February 2015

about your music ambitions. I studied music production and in 2007 while in my second year at campus, I joined Fenon records. They were also kind enough to also sponsor my further studies in South Africa for six months where I mastered in music production. So since then, I have been making music and radio adverts. Tell us about Masters Music. Well, it’s a new baby, we started in January 2015 and we are going to be doing everything that entails production. It’s just me, Micheal Fingaz and another partner but he’s not into production. The way we work here is broken down in three parts, vocals, mixing and creating. But in my case I can contribute to everything because I studied it all, but I don’t like taking credit for everything. We shall mostly major in music, video production and adverts. What motivated you to do your own thing? When I left Fenon records last year in April, I thought I was completely done with production so I could concentrate on comedy, but for some reason clients kept on calling me to do their work and I realized that I was actually making much more money, that’s why I decided to do my own thing.

So are you doing production as a passion? You could say that because I studied it. Did you study comedy? Yes, I studied comedy for a month during my time with Standup Uganda. You need to know what’s funny and what to lead with, if you don’t know that in your brain then you can never be a comedian. The other thing is being able to exaggerate situations so that you bring out the funny side of it. One has to know how to write jokes

CONTINUED and once it’s embedded in your system, sometimes you see a joke before other people even see it. So what I usually do is write it down somewhere, develop it and practice it on my friends just to get their reaction.

For anyone who wants to be a comedian probably knows it by now because they have grown up watching us and so if that’s the career path they choose, we shall welcome them with arms wide open. And my advice will probably be, learn how to write your material and how to make jokes.

How has your comedy journey been? How do you juggle production and comedy? Wow, it’s been too amazing. I had never been to all those Scandinavian and African countries but because of comedy, I got the chance to. It has really taken me places, even when it comes to shopping, I have better bargaining power because people are friendlier. So it’s a good thing to be a comedian because it makes you easier around people anywhere, be it church, burial or a wedding. It’s really been an awesome ride and these days I can just make a phone call to any comedian and I get a gig. We heard you co-own crackers with Salvado, how is that going? It’s great, we also created a product called Africa Laughs. What usually happens is, we get the biggest comedians in Africa and get another African comedian based abroad and we bring them to Uganda for a show. So we created this platform to give back to the people because Ugandans love comedy. What advice do you have for people who are contemplating comedy as a career choice?

Chano8. February 2015

Production is more like my day job and comedy is my night, except when am away on tour. I don’t even look at comedy as a job because am also laughing, it’s production that I take so seriously. Any new projects for Master Music? Yes, we are currently working on the album of Klear Kut which should be dropping later this year. On the international scene, which comedian would you like to work with? I would like to work with Trevor Noah, because I can relate to him. His style is more like my style. So I think Trevor is the best comedian and if given the same audience Kevin Hart has, the possibilities are endless. What should the Ugandan comedy industry do to get better? I think we should do more shows because Ugandans are ready to pay for them but it’s us letting them down, because we are lazy and we don’t want to write down new material.

PC, Phone Games I'm not into games much. Just a few pass times on the phone perhaps.

Looking forward to I'll only get another when/if I need one and if it has something new and relevant to offer. Hence not too excited about anything upcoming as yet. They r mostly just housing changes with a few upgrades that I could do without, for now.

JUST JO Just Jose Came To The Lime Light After Producing 'Ability

He is arguably one of the best producers in Uganda. He is behind some of the major reggae, hip hop and dancehall hits. In some songs, sometimes his name is usually called out just to prove his stature. Still young and vibrant, Just Jose also a promoter is one who could just as well redefine the Ugandan Music Industry. Chano8 had an opportunity to interact with him and this how the interview went. In your own words, Who is Just Jose? I go by the names of Joseph Mwima. I went to Shimoni Demonstration school for my primary, Taibah college for my secondary and the University of Pretoria where I mastered in Information Technology.

with you I don’t have a motivation, as long as I put my mind to it, I can easily compose a beat, no motivation needed. Am not like these other people who need to seat in a certain way to just compose a beat. I call it a state of mind, as long as you don’t attach some vice or trait to your work, you’re good to go.

Information Technology, you don’t say!

What’s the shortest time you have ever recorded a beat?

Oh, I know you probably wondering what am doing in the music industry. Music is my passion and it’s something I always wanted to do. So when I was done with my degree I concentrated on making beats, something that I have become good at.

I have a standard time. All the beats I compose usually take me 30 minutes.

you haters for nothing. Unless, someone is still green and upcoming, I can take a leap of faith because the fame hasn’t yet gotten to their heads and they would be easy to handle. How do you know talent when you see it? I have a good eye and ear of judgment. Sometimes talent is just written on the person’s face so when I finally get to listen to their music, am only confirming what I already knew. That’s impressive, so what plans do you have Supernova in 2015? I just want to put my artistes on the map. I will also be taking a step back from producing so I could manage my artistes the best way I can.

UK Based Ang3lina is one the pioneer names under Supernova Chano8. February 2015

Trust not many artists in Uganda can pay you more than that. So instead of producing for several artists, I will basically concentrate on managing and producing for only my artists, something am sure will pay off. What challenges do you face in the music industry?

but they are worried because the Nigerian wave is taking over. They don’t know what to do, whether to stick to their guns or go with the flow. If the artists can get that uniqueness, like an identity as someone calls it, am sure the Ugandan music will be force in the African market.

Apart from music, what else do you do? I run a ticketing company with some of my friends, called Easy ticket. Apart from that I also have a saving scheme with some colleagues, which we use for developmental purposes. Any message to your fans?

The main challenge I face is finances because it sort of holds you back but if I had it my way, I would shoot for the stars.

Thank you for your support and always work hard.

How do you rate Ugandan music against Nigerian music? That’s too unfair, the Nigerian market is way bigger than Uganda’s. Okay, let me rephrase, how would you rate Ugandan music while looking at the East African market? I would say, Ugandan artistes seem to be confused at the moment. They are trying to stick to their genres

K!MERA is a new bright rising star on the music block. He is a versatile gospel singer/ songwriter mostly inclined to Soul and RnB who grew up in a strong Christian background and works with Watoto Church in Kampala. His passion for music and Christian beliefs has made him come up with some strong lyrics in his latest thought-inspiring songs that have received good reviews. Chano8 talked to him about growing up and his music aspirations.

work, excellence and passion to share a positive message.

K!MERA: Hello thank you for inviting me. Its is a pleasure to talk to Chano8. You guys are doing a great job, I really do appreciate.

Chano8: Who writes for you your songs and where do you record from?

Chano8: Thank you too. So tell us about Kimera, who is this Kimera person?

K!MERA: My names are Sam Kimera. I am 28 years old. I was born and raised here in Kampala and studied in Kampala and also partly in Jinja. I come from a big Christian family with siblings where we had our fights, laughs, and struggles and was full of prayer and singing while growing up. I was i noise maker while growing up. I am a married man (smiles after seeing surprise on our faces)... yes I got married in March 2014 and will be celebrating our first anniversary this March. My stage name is K!MERA (my surname) spelt in caps with the I is replaced with an exclamation mark.

Chano8: So when did you start your music ca-

reer and how would you describe your music self?

K!MERA: I write my own songs and develop most of the concepts and ideas. I record mostly from C-19 Studios with producer Nelson although we did’ Happy to be’ at Ballistic Iyego with a producer called JD. I am managed by a group called the Usual Suspects where we do lots of stuff

Chano8: I have seen you associate with Hip-

Hop artistes, what is your take on the performance of the genre vis a vie other popular genres?

K!MERA: I think Hip Hop music usually sends messages quicker to the youth as they are mostly endeared to it and appeals to the youth the most. So for instance when, I did the song ‘Happy to be’ with some friends, our target audience was the youth. However, I really can’t say much on how it is doing in Uganda.

Chano8: Yes talking about the song ‘Happy to

be” Tell us about the song and what inspired you to come up with those powerful lyrics?

K!MERA: Although the idea of singing has been lingering in my mind for so long, I just started pursuing it seriously last year (2014) with studio work and other professional groundwork going on as well. Naturally I am inclined to Soul and RnB although I experiment a lot in other genres like Urban Hip-Hop and dancehall.

K!MERA: I wanted to make my own contribution to the development of the nation by passing a message to the citizens of Uganda particularly in changing the mindset of the youth in a manner that was fluid, funky and fun based on my believes.

RISING STAR Chano8

Rising Star K!MERA Chano8: Having grown from a staunch Chris-

tian background, where do you see yourself going forward as an artistes. Are you going gospel or secular?

K!MERA: My music is written depending on my beliefs and principles and driven by my strong Christian faith as the background like i said earlier. So my music is packaged as Christian and I don’t see that changing.

Chano8: Now that you have kicked off with music, what are your plans for the immediate future? K!MERA: I Just want to produce new music and release some videos. I expect new material by end of February.

Chano8: You must be a busy man, so besides music what else do you do?

called a few friends who were positive about the project and together with Ruyonga, Benezeri, Mun G, Levixone and K-yans who sings the national anthem chorus, we did the song and released it on Independence day as part of the celebrations but just mostly shared on social media but it received massive positive reviews and feedback.

Chano8: How about that heart melting love song ‘Gwe Wange’? K!MERA:(Face lights up with beaming smile)... I wrote that song in the build up to our wedding. Basically it was a way of expressing my sincere feelings to 'my love' and wife to be. She appreciated the song so much so that I went to studio (C-19) and recorded it and was played for the first time on my wedding day as the opening dance song.

Chano8: Just like Hip Hop, Gospel music seems to still be lagging behind secular music in terms of reach and even financial benefits. What’s your take and the way forward? K!MERA: The potential and creativity is there and just like Ugandan music verses other countries, our music (gospel) lacks identity and yet we can do more. I would love to be part of that.

Chano8. February 2015

K!MERA: I work at Watoto Church with the Watoto children’s choir. I travelled with the choir around the world for five years doing charity and raising awareness to the plight of orphans and vulnerable children and mothers of Uganda. Currently I work in the office still with the Children’s choir.

Chano8: Any inspirational message to readers, upcoming artistes and your fans? K!MERA: The message is in Mathew chapter 5:5 where I draw my inspiration from. Anything i do revolves around the Bible and centres in areas of excellence, good work, attention to content and a message with Christian values whether in a relationship, marriage or life.

Chano8: It is the lover’s month, what would be your ideal romance?

K!MERA: I don’t think there is an ideal way of treating a woman especially on Valentine’s day. For me there are not templates. You just need to tune into a person and understand what she likes and go all out. I have done many crazy things for love but the most romantic thing i have done is the song 'Gwe wange' i wrote for my wife crowns it all.

Chano8 RELATIONSHIPS

Her View

Relationship

Last valentines day, I got home tired after a long day at work only to find my husband of thirty years and our 20 year old daughter watching a pornographic movie. I’m still reeling from shock when I remember that event. When I demanded an explanation, he blurted out that she was old enough.

Gloria Batuta

T

his is one of those problems where I would like to refer you to the counselling place in Ntinda name ‘Relate’. There is a lot here that is weird and scary enough to question. Such as is this daughter his too or is she adopted? Why would any father watch porn with his child of whatever age? What is his intention? Is it something you agreed on as parents to add to her sexuality curriculum. Most people watch pornography for a different reasons, one being sexual arousal or educational purposes. In either case it is morally wrong to find your husband and daughter watching it. Together! If this girl is a step child to this man I would advise you run away and very far from this man, he is not to be trusted with him. No matter her age a girl will always see her father figure as Superman’ a person that is the strongest and is never wrong. Even as she grows to the age of 20, its easy for a sexual pest to convince her to watch porn with him and participating in the act is ok. In the states and the UK these cases are normal. If your daughter is at the university get her residence there, let her spend more time with her peers, or send her to the village or an auntie’s place but just get her out of there. Find ways to limit the interactions with this man. Then try talking

Chano8. February 2015

I still don’t know what to do up to this day. I’m suspicious that these two must be up to no good. The girl talks back to me and all this is too surreal for me because she is my biological daughter. I want to walk away because I honestly feel alien in that house. to him about this behavior, some psychologists believe it is fine for parents to feel some level of attraction for their children, don’t get me wrong, it is gross to think of and should be handled immediately and am pretty sure with lots of therapy it can be curbed. The safest is to keep those two apart before they end up in an incestuous relationship. At 20 years of age, I believe it is normal for a girl to feel grown up and ready to leave the nest, the rebellious character could be a result of that. At 20 it was hard also for me to still live by the same rules of my mother as I did when I was a child. So she might just need her own space and maybe your suspicions could be clouding your judgement and how you treat your daughter. Let her find housing with friends, sub rent a house with her peers. I understand giving up on a man that is involved with your daughter, but this girl is your child, look out for her talk to her and help her get out of that messy situation, As a mother you do what it takes for your children. As for you if there is any proof that man has been indulging in any inappropriate activities with your daughter, he is no good for you, he just destroyed your marriage and its values. Walk away …. Like yesterday.

RELATIONSHIPS Chano8

His Take

W

ell well, you are in quite a pickle. Before we start the blame game, lets first answer some related questions. Firstly is it the first time you found your husband watching such material or has it been a habit? If it has been a habit then he probably is nonchalant about the whole thing and doesn’t see any harm in letting your daughter join him. Secondly, have the two of you as a couple been watching that kind of stuff. IF you have been then this is simply a progression of what the two of you started. The thing about pornography is that it makes the viewer insensitive to x rated material so they take it as normal cinematic content. It deadens the person's perspective to reality and what is morally acceptable. Your husband may have gotten so used to that stuff that he sees no error in sharing such material with your daughter. So if you both have engaged in watching pornography, then you are simply reaping the fruits of your recreational preferences. Might I add that, contrary to popular beliefs, couples watching pornography may seen helpful in the start, but it eventually kills the mans libido. He eventually won't be able to get it up unless if there is some steamy stuff going on on the TV in front of him. Back to your problem, If you haven’t been watching pornography with your husband, then this could be a habit that he has been hiding from you. You have not disclosed whether when you found them, they were hiding away or watching it in blatant view of anyone. The fact that he was watching this material with your daughter questions the morals of your husband. While adults like the notion of they are mature enough to watch that kind of material, it’s shocking that your husband would have the audacity to share that with your daughter. There is simply no logical reason why he would do that. Either he is the greatest married pervert alive of he simply does not care about his position as husband and father to the both of you. You need to sit this man down and have a long talk with him. Let him tell you what prompted him to do such a thing that seriously questions his morality and sense of sanity. He needs to give you an explanation otherwise you could one day find the

I also think that there are areas where you have failed as a mother because it is highly unlikely that a child that you have raised up well would sit down and watch pornography with her father. Talk to her as well and find out what is going on. I wouldn’t advocate for any rush decisions because your marriage can still be salvaged. Talk to them both. May 2014

EVERYWHERE I GO

Bebe Cool

T

his song generated a lot of debate and eventually even became controversial after its delayed release with some sections of the media claiming it had been rejected by International TV stations due to ‘poor quality’ and referring to it as ‘below standard’

However, recently the song was aired on MTV and Bebe Cool says many other stations will follow suit just like last year’s successful block- buster hit song ‘Love you every day’ which dominated airwaves across the globe. The song which was eventually released on Bebe Cool’s social media channels and website on January 23rd still generated alot of debate and garnered many views on You tube. But lets look at the song in our own perspective. The lover’s Reggae song was written and directed by budding new star Alexander Bagonza aka A Pass and produced by Nessim. The video, shot by Godfather Productions from South Africa, has been the talk of town not only because of the anticipation and hype created before its release, but also because of the controversy generated during the shooting with stories making rounds that, Bebe Cool and wife Zuena Kirema had a fight over the closeness of Bebe to a video vixen and a scene that involved Bebe Cool kissing her. The romantic emotion-evoking song is basically a love song that narrates a couple’s journey through thick and thin and promise to stick together no matter what. That message is reflected in the abstract video too with a couple that stays together from childhood to adulthood, then to old age. Godfather who is behind some of Africa’s greatest videos is the director behind the music video and his picture quality is superb as usual. He also chooses to blend fresh colours in the composition without distorting the natural feel. An extra enhancement is the use of the tiny lights flickering in the background. The subject of debate is the storyline which has limited depth. But Bebe Cool told chano8 in an exclusive interview that, this was intended as the video was shot in one location to emphasize the 'abstract picture’ story in it.

The Wedding Ringer

T

he wedding ringer was released 15 January 2015. A modern day comedy starring the comedian and actor Kevin Hart , Josh Gad and Kaley Couco Sweeting from Bing bang theory. The movie is directed by Jeremy Garelick, who also co-wrote the script with Jay Lavender. You don’t need much to know it’s a comedy set to leave you laughing for the entire 1:40minutes. Afterall, it stars Kevin Hart, duh!! Josh Gad is quite funny too, and as you watch the movie you realize they make a good team. Anyway, here is the story line Josh Gad plays Doug Harris, who is sweet, lovable but has a problem making friends. Fortunately, he is in love and marrying the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) who is not aware that he has no friends, which causes a dilemma for him as he realizes he has no best man or groomsmen. He is led towards Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for anyone in need (I wonder who thought up that idea). The story goes along the line for these 2 trying to convince everyone that they are long time friends. Inevitably, they end up forging a real true romance in the end. For parental guidance, the parent might want to regulate the children watching as the movie contains some drug use, little nudity and bad language, not to mention some sexual content.

DON'T CRY

Wiz Kid Ft. Radio & Weseal

(L-R)Radio, Wizkid, Weasel and Washington

“Radio and Weasel are a formidable team in the music industry. The award winning duo formed the original Goodlyfe crew and have for a long time been churning out hit after hit. This time, they team up with the young Nigerian Superstar Wiz Kid for this mellow reggae hit.

frica’s Dynamic duo Radio and Weasel a few months ago together with Nigerian superstar Wizkid, real names Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun joined forces to unleash a sweet melodious Reggae tune single “Don’t Cry.” The combination of the Ugandan duo’s signature reggae vocals and Wizkid’s penchant for dancehall made this a natural blend of talent as soon as the idea was mooted. No wonder it has picked up like wild fire in the last few months. The duo linked up with Wizkid back in October when he was in Kampala for his performance at the Guinness

All Black VIP Party that took place at Golf Course Hotel to record, as well as shoot the video for this modern beat reggae rhyme. Veteran Ugandan music producer and songwriter David Ebangit Washington was the man assigned to assemble the material. And oh boy, how he doesn’t disappoint on this project with the song opening up with delicate synth that breaks down into Wizzy and Weasel’s crooning all over the classic drumroll intro. Backed up by beautiful female background vocals, the sound bursts into that ‘nod ya head rythm’ just like Bob

Marleys “No Woman No Cry,” when Wizzy takes charge of the choruses but with much more up tempo gust as Weasel comes in later with his hoarse ragga/reggae flow that builds in small calculated combinations. Although there was controversy created by MR G about the theme being copied, we feel there is nothing related to the Jamaican dancehall artiste in this piece. The video done by Ahoy Films does't disappoint either. So get to listening and dancing right away.

Chano8 K'ANGIE BAND

Live Music Scene

Band Review K'angie Band

“K'angie Band led by Angella Kalule is a six piece band that performs every Saturday at Jazzville and every Wednesday at Sheraton Kampala”,

Y

ou have probably listened to the affectionate, warm and tender voice of former Sanyu FM's Lounge presenter Angela Kalule, formerly known as Angel before. For those in love or those who claim to be, she was the voice with all the answers on 'Love at 11'. A daily one-hour, love therapy late night show.

Chano8. February 2015

After years with Misty Jazz, Angela left to start her own band. Yes, the 'K'angie Band'. The six piece band has since matured and been rocking Kampala and other parts of the country in live performances. The K’Angie Band which won the Last Band Standing live music competition at UMA Hall after beating stiff challenge from Janzi and Emiziki among others to emerge champions, walked away with a cool Shs. 50m in prizes.

Since then, the band has grown in leaps and bounds performing in several night clubs and happening places like Venom and Guvnor. The band, which started in 2010, has Brian Kikawa on the drums, Enock Lugomba on the keys, Nicko on the lead guitar, Charles Rockie on the bass guitar, Joseph Ategeka and Flavia Nabukonde on the vocals.

K'ANGIE BAND Chano8

The K’Angie Band which won the Last Band Standing live music competition at UMA Hall beat stiff challenge from Janzi, and Emiziki among others to emerge champions. They walked away with a cool Shs 50m in prizes. First forward, the band now has a new home at Jazzville in Bugolobi where they perform every Saturday. And they are slowly but steadily building a fan base with Angela’s sultry voice taking centre stage as they perform some of her top hits like ‘Katikiti’, ’Valentine’, “Njagala”, Tender “Owo Omwana” on top of the cover songs they do. Known for mostly performing Contemporary blues and Afro-Beat, the band also adds other flavours like Zouk, Jazz, R&B and Reggae. Together with the home band Code 9, they surely provide revellers a variety of sounds to enjoy in these surrounds. Chano8. February 2015

came in 1997 through a friend who was a member of the virtuoso group Diamond Ensemble. Angela joined as a backup vocalist, slowly transforming to lead vocalist. With Diamond, she released her ballad single ‘Akamuli’. She then collaborated with Abby Mukiibi of AfriTalent on the ‘Bulemezi’ songs.

ABOUT ANGELA

After her time with Diamond, she attended to Light Rays band. Her time at Light Rays was short before she was wooed back to Diamond. During her second term at Diamond , she released a six-track album with Diamond male vocalist Dan Kabenje titled ‘Akasisi’.

Born in Mengo, Kampala in 1977, Angela Kalule started her singing odyssey like many other musicians, in infancy. Her experience with belting vocals at Aga Khan nursery school in Nairobi as well as in church Sunday school set the foundation for her entry into the professional music circles in Uganda. Her break through into the music field

Angela then worked with Rachael Magoola’s band, joined Splash band and unleashed the hit singles ‘Mbipinga’ and ‘Watali Sebo’. In late 2003, she was invited to join The Afrigo band and was regularly on stage as Misty Jazz’ lead vocalist. After the release of the super hit song "Katikiti', the rest became history.

Recently they secured a spot in Sheraton where they will perform every Wednesday. They have performed here before though.
