EVENTS raised and given ‘a future and most importantly dignity.’ This Canadian’s story and his drumming with the legs at the well-attended charity show brought some goose bumps and even tears into the eyes of sections of the crowd. Shortly after this four skimpily-dressed queen dancers entered the stage “to warm up” the crowd. It was party time after that. They announced the official kick off by wiggling to high-tempo Soukous with the chief animator known as Computer doing his thing behind the mic. At around 9:47pm, the 57-year-old Olomide, father of seven, got on stage and showcased his dance skills which have kept his music videos entertaining through the years. Dressed in a white suit, he drew wild cheers from the audience. He opened his performance with ‘Andrada’ and soon the crowd was on their feet shaking and wiggling. Joined by his singer, the angelic Cindy Le Coeur, the duo did their popular collaborations such as ‘Si Si’ and ‘Ikea’ and fans

joined in to sing along. Olomide who also holds a Master’s Degree in mathematics then left the stage at 11:40PM after performing for two hours without a break. He had a 2:00AM flight to catch for Nairobi where he was scheduled to perform over the weekend. He thanked president Yoweri Museveni, Ugandans and Rotarians for the hospitality and promised to always come back.

The legacy Koffi together with other Congolese musicians like Pepe Kale, Awilo Longomba, Kanda Bongo Man Madilu System and many others, dominated the music scene in Uganda in the 1980s and 90s. Last Friday he brought back all the memories of the ‘good old times’ with an exhilarating performance at Lugogo. The numbers and excitement from the crowd proved beyond doubt that Lingala and Soukous are still loved by Ugandans.

The show kicked off at about 8:10pm and was curtain-raised by Rema of ‘Sitaki’, Grace Nakimera and Ladies’ man Jamal. Amaaso/Ntunga Concert: One Big Happy Family The place of Radio and Weasel, the Goodlyfe duo, on Uganda’s music scene was cemented recently with their performance at the launch of the two albums, Amaaso and Ntunga.

T

he place of Radio and Weasel, the Goodlyfe duo, on Uganda’s music scene was cemented recently with their performance at the launch of the two albums, Amaaso and Ntunga. That they were doing a two-in-one was not so much of a surprise, as the game of music in Uganda is now firmly about pulling out as many bunnies from the hat as possible.

The two are not normally known for their dance moves but on the night, it was a pleasant surprise that they had come ready to display as much dance as music. 18 May.2014

The fans were served to the full; the earlier fracas caused by the temporary stoppage of the concert – even before it started – was the cue for everyone to put their best foot forward. The lineup of curtain raisers was a who-is-who in Uganda’s hall of musical fame and the din of the audience was testimony that it had got the desired effect. Goodlyfe is not just a two bit act on the sidelines, which was made clear. It was confirmed by the words of their former nemesis, Bebe Cool, who had also been reported to have burned the midnight candle rehearsing for

EVENTS this particular show. No one was going to come to the party with less than the best in their arsenal. Bebe Cool praised the performance of Radio and Weasle and called it “one of the greatest shows” in Uganda’s history. Irene Namubiru, Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool, Desire Luzinda, Sheebah, Pallasso - all these turned out for the show and they did not disappoint. Many danced, finding it hard to contain the flow of music. The alcohol flowed freely and there was a real friendship. As someone said in the audience, this was the reason musicians should concentrate on making music, instead of fighting ceaseless wars. When they were all up there on stage supporting each other, everyone was happy. The recent stories about an imminent breakup of Goodlyfe did not seem to have any effect on the mood as the revelers danced and generally had a good time.

Lessons We Learnt Fr

On Friday 28th March 2014, Chameleone made history by having a well-attended and successful concert at the vast Lugogo Cricket Oval. This has been a venue only reserved for ‘big international artistes,’ mainly coming from Jamaica and the USA.

1- Dr Jose Chameleone Is Still Uganda’s No.1

M

any of our local artistes have been shying away (understandably) due to fear of failing to raise a big number of concert goers. Chameleone defied the odds by pulling off a massive show and a master stroke performance to crown it all. Following the successful Cricket Oval concert, we learnt some few lessons and here we share them.

om The Tubonge Concert 1- Chameleone Is Still Uganda’s Number One

H

ate him or love him, the truth remains the “Music Doctor” is still the most outstanding music talent we have in Uganda. There have been arguments and debates over which artiste is most talented or successful but statistics don’t lie. The last three Ugandan concerts have proved to be a testament. Valu Valu (2012), Badilisha (2013) and now Tubonge have pulled massive crowds consecutively in a period where he is supposed to be ‘going down,’ especially after the emergence of new fresh talent like the Goodlyfe duo and his other opponents, Bobi Wine and Bebe Cool organising music battles of champions to determine ‘the undisputed music champion of Uganda’. The latest show, despite controversies surrounding the build up to the do involving the KCCA banning outdoor shows and URA attaching his property over unpaid taxes, was almost filled to capacity.

Chameleone has released a successful album or hit single consistently every year for the past twelve or so years. He is that big and Tubonge was just one of them. He did not only attract a big crowd, but he also pulled off one hell of a performance accompanied by his Leone Island crew performing with a live band. He pleasantly surprised many and brought goose bumps on many people’s skins as he played love ballad’s with a saxophone. Many fans especially the ladies held back tears and placed their hands on their chests as they were moved by his extraordinary talent. The choir that he performed Tubonge with illuminated the stage at the climax. The moves were out of the ordinary. And oh, not to forget there were no CD auctions as well which have become a norm at concerts of recent taking away the entertainment bit atthese events.

2- Ugandans Support Local Talent

T

he evidence was there; Ugandans still love and support local talent as reflected by the massive turn up at Lugogo. Not even a late evening downpour could deter the determined fans from leaving the Cricket Oval.

The curtain raisers like Geoffrey Lutaaya, Goodlyfe and Bobi Wine received a warm welcome amidst wild cheers from the crowd. Most of the performances from the local artistes were engaging, with fans singing along to their favourite tunes. The crowd who were in agreement with Chameleone over detesting Ugandan DJs for playing Nigerian music in clubs, kept shouting ‘abewo’ when Chameleone claimed Ugandan artists are equally good. “Why over play

3- Ugandan Music Rules

W

e have come a long way musically and we are getting there. Remember the days when Congolese music dominated the entertainment scene in Uganda? Not anymore. Even the South Africans and Jamaicans who at one time were darlings in night clubs and party venues have been forgotten long since. Ugandan music has grown in heaps and bounds. The sound is better, the videos are cleaner and the message, more mature and relevant. That doesn’t mean we don’t have challenges, but we have certainly improved a lot. Sometime back in the 80’s and 90’s, no one would imagine a local artist pulling off a show of this magnitude in Lugogo Cricket Oval.

26 May.2014

The fans who turned up in big numbers, braved the heavy downpour to support Chameleone

foreign music?” he wondered. The crowd answered back with shouts of “You are no 1,”and “We love you.” It was easy to feel the energy spreading all over the crowd that cut across all age and social groups. Young and old alike, everybody looked excited.

Yes something unimaginable even in the recent past is now possible and happening and soon other artists will follow. It’s possible and we all can contribute to make it work. And the beauty of it all is that our artists now have learnt or are learning to perform with a live band.

5- Technology Still A Challenge In Uganda

M

uch as there were lots of positives to pick from the concert, some concerns still remain a challenge. Despite the organisers, Balaam and Silk Events, setting up a beautiful and spacious stage with good lighting and fairly good sound, there were glitches here and there at the show.

ANALYSIS

4- Peace Not Beef

F

rom the response that greeted the presence of Goodlyfe and Bobi Wine in the Tubonge concert, it’s clear that the fans prefer peace over beef that has dominated our entertainment industry for long. With even stand-up comedy also now marred in beefing controversies, it was a fresh sight to see some of the former ‘sworn in’ enemies share the same stage after a long time. The crowd loved it and they showed it by ululating and cheering the performances of these artists who could not see eye to eye at one time.

Peace not War:Chameleone and Bobi Wine put aside thier differences and performed at Tubonge amidist cheers from the fans

The Goodlyfe recieved a thunderous applause

First the microphones were very few with MCs and artists sharing two wireless microphones with one going off or having creaky sound at some point or another. This challenge has been going on in many shows but still organisers have failed to fix it. There was also the incidence of the ‘Bifuna Kilalu’ machines jamming to work when a winner in the Airtel win money promotion was supposed to collect money and the machine failed to start. However the most embarrassing moment was when the Music doctor was

27 May.2014

supposed to launch his new music videos and the big screens failed to work at the crucial hour. He resorted to using one which was ‘hidden’ at the back with many fans failing to see what was going on over there. If we can work together on a few of these issues and do our part in supporting our local talent, surely one day we shall reach the promised land and enjoy music in the form that we deserve at the same time help create our brothers and sisters in the industry a means of survival.

War Of Words

Bebe Cool vs Deejay Beekay Battle: Patriotism or Quality? Never mind it started on April Fool’s Day. There was however no fooling when Musician Bebe Cool took to social media to criticize, condemn and complain about Ugandan DJs promoting Nigerian music at the expense of Ugandan music.

W

hy repeatedly play Davido’s Skelewu, Gobe or Inyanya’s Kukere when there is Bebe Cool’s Nkola Byafayo or Coccodiosis?

What started as a mere rant became a fullyfledged war when X-FM’s DJ Beekay (Keith Kuyoh) took on the mantle on behalf of DJ’s. He rubbished Bebe Cool’s blanket cries of patriotism and advised him to up his game or fizzle out.

In a litany of rants, DJ Beekay told Bebe Cool: “Just because your music isn’t on my or other DJs’ playlist doesn’t mean you call us out for not supporting Ugandan music. There is no Ugandan DJ who plays Nigerian music out of malice for Ugandan artists they are merely responding to the market demand. Music is very dynamic, not static. Instead of complaining, you should borrow a leaf from the Nigerians. Their secret is simple QUALITY. Ask Goodlyfe. It is the simple reason they get airplay on BET, MTV, Channel O and other international media and get 28 May.2014

He insists Ugandan artists have to do quality music in order to compete favourably nominated world over for different awards” Bebe Cool never saw the funny side and he insisted on the patriotism crusade when they appeared on NTV’s “The Beat”.

FEATURE

He said, “Beekay is not on point, he didn’t interpret my post on Facebook very well. My post has nothing to do with the big artistes but Ugandan music generally and patriotism.”

Not a Ugandan problem alone Bebe Cool might have spoken then for himself, but his rant poses many questions. Considering that we live in competitive world where crowds are more discerning and do not settle for less, do the likes of Bebe Cool risk becoming irrelevant just because they don’t heed to quality and preach patriotism? Do we see a larger dominance of Nigerian and Jamaican music and a few Ugandan musicians who have invested heavily in video and audio as they seek to hit the global markets? According to Robert Segawa, a music producer and critic, it isn’t a Ugandan problem alone. Kenya and Tanzania are facing it too. “Musicians in the region should learn that they are competing with the world and not the region. Sadly, most of them are still producing songs

Bebe Cool has been in a war of words with Ugandan DJs accusing them of shunning Ugandan music for Nigerian and Jamaican music. which are not regionally accepted. How do they expect to compete?” he queries. According to Segawa, it is foolhardy to settle for less just because of patriotism and yet we live in a modern world that calls for equality irrespective of country or region. “I have no problem with a DJ playing quality music from Ice Prince, Demarco, Whiz Kid, D Banj if that is what they want to hear. Our local artistes should rebrand,” he says.

Nigerian Artists Like P-Square, Dbanj and Fuse -ODG have rocked East African and international airwaves, many artistes here are copying their style.

Nigerians study world market Segawa further explains that Nigerian music has taken over, not because it is superior but because these Nigerians have studied the market. For instance, he points out that there is a growing worldwide trend towards dance, techno and trance music, which is high tempo. The trend began almost four years ago and is still going on. Artistes like the Black-eyed peas, Pitbull, Calvin Harris popularised it and all the West Africans did was to keep a watchful eye. Today, songs like Oliver Twist by Dbanj and Azonto by Fuse ODG or Gobe by Davido are big hits all over the world. “Nigeria is saturated with musicians and with their aggressive nature; they have been on an adventure, looking for new markets for their 30 Feb.2014

entertainment stuff across Africa. We are not doing the same. We are not opening new grounds. Our industry seems to be stagnant,” the producer says. He further advises that instead of crying foul, Ugandan artistes should research the music audience, see what music lovers want at a particular time and produce music according to the demand, without compromising the quality or copying and pasting of course.

In Nigeria, the time you’ll hear music from other regions/countries playing is past midnight... 90% of their airplay is Nigerian on TV, Radio and club... 5% is western music and the other 5% is from the rest of Africa. East Africa does little of that”

FEATURE

Kenya suffered the same problem Long before Bebe Cool’s rant, Kenyan artistes had also begun crying patriotism. Joy Doreen Biira, a TV personality in Kenya, says that just because they listened to cries like that of Bebe Cool, Kenya is changing. Some traditional songs like Otieno Aloka’s Kanungo Eteko and Victoria Kimani’s Fundamendoz, which are typical Kenyan Kadongo Kamu, are played by mainstream DJs in clubs. “In Nigeria, the time you’ll hear music from other regions/countries playing is past midnight... 90% of their airplay is Nigerian on TV, Radio and club... 5% is western music and the other 5% is from the rest of Africa. East Africa does little of that,” she says in defence of Bebe Cool’s stance.

31 May.2014

Chano8

Lately, Kenya and Uganda’s music industry has been relegated into a showbiz dumping site and artistes seem comfortable in the passenger’s seat playing second fiddle in this game changing Nigerian invasion. As it is, Bebe Cool and DJ Beekay are merely eye openers. They open our eyes to the fact that unless artistes in the region learn to think global without losing their local identity, the joke is on us.

Some traditional songs like Otieno Aloka’s Kanungo Eteko and Victoria Kimani’s Fundamendoz, which are typical Kenyan Kadongo Kamu, are played by mainstream DJs in clubs.

ASK RWAMITI

Is It True That 80% of Ugandan Mile Rwamiti is presenter on NTV’s program ‘Konna ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and the Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer. Which artists are truly wealthy?

In regards to dimes, very few have money, or maybe I should call it wealth. You can tell who has money by how they try or try not to rub it in your face. The show offs usually don’t have much. For instance Mesach Semakula is one of the richest musicians in Uganda with estates that include land and apartments to his name but he will just cruise around town in a simple car and will not flaunt his money. Geofrey Lutaya and Ronald Mayinja also live very normal lives but have large country homes and even own hotels.

How far do artistes in Uganda go for stardom?

A lot of people crave for stardom. This ends up being an obsession that causes even those without any talent or skills to embark on a musical journey. They do not realize that you have to have a talent that you build on and work hard to perfect. It is not just any other profession. Some that I will not mention steal other people’s songs and pass them off as their own. They are usually songs with a catchy track. Although we dance to them, they never last long. A Ugandan musician was recently sued for Shs40m for copyright infringement.

Ask Rwamiti 32 May.2014

Then there are musicians that just love the bling, big cars and extravagant hangouts. This makes them get “Sugar Mummies” both here and abroad to fuel their lifestyle. They will usually take a few months off to travel to foreign lands to meet their “money bags”.

Artistes Practice Witchcraft?

While some have succeeded in getting money this way, others have backfired terribly to an extent of being held hostage by the “Sugar Mummies” as sex slaves.

Do artists practice witchcraft?

Over 80% practice witchcraft. I know it’s a huge number but the ones that do believe that it works. You will usually find them with a little stick in their wallets. Before they used to travel as far as Tanzania to get “musical spells” cast to ensure that they have hit after hit but Uganda now has its own musician’s witchdoctor on Entebbe road that can be accessed easily.

Which ones in particular? I cannot mention names here.

Without mincing words…

The musicians that show off a lot have lost assets to debt collectors all in the name of trying to impress people that could care less. If they can understand that most people are not interested in public displays and all the public needs is for them to work hard and invest their money. People will not remember their cars. Musicians should understand that we are tired of listening to songs about problems as we have enough problems of our own. They need to sing songs that not only give hope but also encourage and motivate people to work hard. It is for this reason that gospel songs are doing well.

A lot of people crave for stardom. This ends up being an obsession that causes even those without any talent or skills to embark on a musical journey.

Building An Inclusive Fan Base Using Community Radio For an established musician seeking to maintain or widen a fan base and for the upcoming musician looking for a breakthough, community radio is the thing.

so many. Get your song played on radio, and even those who are in remote areas will listen to it. Upload it online, and there are issues with bandwidth, coverage, hardware and software. The listenership will be confined to a smaller circle than the former.

So, how does one avoid death? One has to keep breathing and also keep the blood pumping. However, while bodily functions may appear effortless, building a fan base requires hard work, focus and ingenuity. For an established musician seeking to maintain or widen a fan base and for the upcoming musician looking for a breakthrough, radio is the thing.

“Radio is the most accessed communication medium globally even with the advent of internet or smart phones that access radio frequencies or apps. This will hardly change in the near future, says Jared Ombui, who works at Kenyan Broadcasting Cooperation. Figures from UNESCO confirm this. In developing countries like Uganda and most of Africa, 70 per cent of the people have access to a radio.

Despite the emergence of other media, such as the internet, the radio still remains the most widely accessed and single way to reach

The formula for building a fan base through radio can be summed as SERVE, CONNECT, ENGAGE.

SERVE With this view, the fans are out there, you need to serve them something by which they will get to know you, if you are an upcoming artiste, or keep them checking for you, if you are an established one. “Before talking about a fan base, an artist must have quality music, identified a target audience and radio stations or shows that play a particular genre. With Your Fans CONTINUEd from page 33 But building a fan base is as well dependent on the quality of music you put out. A well-arranged/produced song will have high rotation (more plays) by radio presenters. Secondly, audience requests enhance the acceptance of the song. JaqDeweyi, who is both a radio presenter and a budding musician, concurs: “Getting on Radio will depend on the kind of music that you make. Radio stations have different target audiences. Depending on your target, make music that suits a particular audience and Radio stations will pick it up. Whatever you do, have quality music, someone will notice.”

CONNECT Knowing the target audience is something one has to get right. You have to have the appeal for the listeners to identify with you, as a person, and with what you are about which is your music style. David Wodmal, who works with Vision Group in Gulu, highlights that aspect while using the area he works in as a case in point. “The music must have a message, it has to touch the people.” He adds that in northern

Uganda, it is mostly music that touches social ills like corruption, carries a religious tone, or highlights the experiences such as the war and suffering they have gone through. In connecting with the audience, a little help from a friend will do. For radio, the internet is its best friend. “Just like any other business, build a good product and market it. With rise of social media, artists should often update their personal and fan pages or handles. This is fodder for radio presenters while hosting shows. Similarly, send music to radio stations or load it on free to download pages like Reverbnation and Soundcloud. The easier it is to access your music increases playing possibilities.

“The best person to spread the word about you is not you. Artists come a dime a dozen and, frankly, we are bombarded with new music daily. Your goal should be to get your fans engaged and spreading the word about you to their peers,” writes DJ Brucki, a US-based Jamacian DJ who promotes music through his website

Musicians should seek for interviews or be accessible as they go up the fame ladder. Audiences are eager to hear from the horse’s mouth as issues unfold or new releases hit the airwaves. “Often, artists downplay building rapport with radio presenters.

And when your song is put in ‘rotation,’ as an upcoming artiste, that is the cue to even work that fan base harder. Abdu Wasike, who co-hosts a weekly dance music show on KFM, stresses that point even more. “Most upcoming artistes in Uganda have a problem. I don’t mean being a nag. Try to find out how they are doing away from playing your music or when they are to play it. A good relationship is a subconscious grip that outlasts trying to bribe radio presenters to play your song,” advises Ombui.

That Sunday, after snaking down a dusty Masajja road, we arrive at Nakutammidde, home to DMS studios where Kapalaga has asked us to meet him. We ask for directions and after getting lost four times, once in a banana plantation, we finally come across the non-descript DMS Studios, located in a tenants quarters. DMS studio is owned by David, a cousin to Kapalaga, who grew up with him. It is testament to how much music is rooted in the family. This, Kapalaga says, is where he cut his musical teeth. Born in October 5th, 1988, Kapalaga (Micheal Kakande) is the son to Sereste Kasule Jnr, an active Kadongo Kamu artist in Lion K Stars and the veteran singer of Bundu fame, Noeline Neguya, whose song (Bundu) was a 1990s hit. Bundu was redone by Steve Jean who transformed it and lent it a dancehall flavour. Kapalaga along with his father, are the founding members of the Lion K Stars band with several artistes like commando. At 26, Kapalaga comes across as a much grounded young man an attribute he, repeatedly, credits his parents for. His chosen trade name, Mzee, which means “Old Man,” belies his youthfulness. 38 May.2014

I grew up around music. My earliest memories were those of touring with my mother. Before she performed, the MC always announced: “The mother of this boy is going to perform next.” When I was in S.5 in Lubiri S.S, my father helped me write my first song about the school. It was so good that I received a scholarship to study free from S.5 to S.6. After S.6, I came to the studio(DMS) and started learning production. The first song I released was called Doi Doi and I also started working at Radio Simba as a producer. “I barely saw my father while I was growing up because he would go on tour for up to three months at a time, but I was always with my mother. At a certain point, my parents belonged to two rival bands. My father belonged to Super Singers, along with Matiya Luyima and Fred Ssebatta while my mother was in an-

other one, but fortunately the rivalry of the two bands did not extend to our home. “I have moved away from my father’s Kadongo Kamu style because It is not relevant to my generation and I cannot honestly perform in the windy narrative way that is part of Kadongo Kamu. “I have learnt a lot from my parents. First they instilled humility in me. Usually artistes believe that you have to transform your whole look, plait your hair and do drugs. Not me; I am committed to sticking to the humble image I began with. I give the audience my naturalness. If anybody expects me to conform to the industry’s standard, then that’s just not me. Besides my mother has told me that I can do all I want to do, but that should I plait my hair, I should never talk to her again.”

The Sky Is Not The Limit For This Musical Family Mr Kasule

Being a musician has been one interesting experience. When I was only 11 years old, I got a music scholarship to Mitala Maria Parish where I was a drummer. I began in 1986 in Kadongo Kamu Super Singers along with Matiya Luyima and Fred Ssebatta. My first song was Wandi Sonyiye Tatta, an HIV awareness song. “HIV then was so prevalent and there was no way it could be controlled unlike today. I performed that song along Philly Bongole Lutaaya, and I appeared in his awareness video. My other hit was a collaboration called Patu, lso a hit in 1989, which I sang with a musician called Prossy Nakamya, populary known as Mangada because that was the name she used in her narratives. “I also met my wife at Mitala Maria, where she was a dancer. I have met many musicians here and abroad. I have curtain-raised for Shala Muana, Kanda Bongoman, Pepe Kale and Awilo Longomba. One of my most

40 May.2014

memorable experiences is when my band and I performed one of Pepe Kale’s songs at the Sheraton. As we performed, we saw Pepe Kale, easily identified by his trademark wide girth in the audience. We were scared so we stopped playing the song immediately. However, Pepe Kale was so impressed with our rendition that he asked for an encore. That was one of my most validating career moments. “I want my son to continue musically because it will open as many doors as it did for me.”

I stopped singing in the 1990s and only concentrate on worshiping my savior, Isa Massia. Music is not necessarily an evil thing; after all it’s a God-given talent. It is the lifestyle that artistes adopt that is bothersome. “Music has been a unifying factor in our home. It brought my husband Cereste and I together when I was a talented performer at Mitala Maria. Even though we were very young, we were very talented; this opened very many doors for us. I remember traversing the country to perform; we went as far as Kotido and Moroto. My brother John Kitiyo introduced me to the more professional side of music.

“My son understands that because of my religious beliefs I do not totally support his music career. But as long as he is alive and well that is the most important thing. “When I was an artiste, our songs were rich in meaning; most of them were cautionary and made fun of scandalous behaviour. One of my songs Binojjo was about a rich man who was wooing a poor man’s wife and how she exposed and shamed him before her husband. “I have not released a song in a very long time, but when people meet me they recognise me. I hang my singing boots. It is God’s time now.”

Music is talent, it flows in our blood

reak-ups in Uganda’s music scene are not new. News of an impending break up or even an actual one is treated as business as usual nowadays, seeing as the music train continues to run even when friends go their separate ways. In recent times, the grapevine has been alive with reports that the top duo, Goodlyfe, are on the verge of breaking up. The fervent denials from Radio and Weasle seem to only fan the flames, with many already writing the epitaphs for the singing act. Fans of music in the country have gone through separations and they have learnt how to handle the heartbreak, it seems. From the days when Kadongo Kamu ruled the field, musicians have moved from one group to another or they have decided to go solo. Many experts in the field believe that contrary to the doomsayers, many times these are watershed mo-

It was believed that their then manager and producer, Steve Jean, was the real power behind the throne and without his touch, they stood no chance

in the rough waters of Ugandan music. It was widely believed that the artistes, Jackie Chandiru, Maya Baganda and Lillian Mbabazi would go the way of the other trios that had come out of the Coca Cola singing competition that had spawned the groups in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Prior to the split of Blu*3,

Radio without Weasel – Yin without Yang? Should Goodlyfe split, Ugandans need to know that this would not be the end of the world. But it does not hurt to imagine what it would be like – Radio singing without the rough-voiced Weasel. Conversely, think about Weasel hacking on and on without the soft melodies of his partner in crime. The two of them have their strengths but would they really survive without each other? The recent breakup of Eagles Production, a band that stayed the course and gave us great hits and celebrity singers, may have been a little hard on many fans, though. For 16 years, the band grew from strength to strength, creating millionaires out of Everyday Joes whose only claim to fame was to belong to the band.

After the dust set, in the place of Eagle stood Golden Production and The New Eagles Production. Both have to compete for the same clients and this means they have to all find new strategies to woo the paying patrons. Now isn’t this good for us the listeners?

An inevitable trend? There are those who argue that however long a band stays together, cracks will appear and they will have to be transformed or break up. They go with the assumption that with time, the individual stars in the band will all grow a sizeable fan base and start thinking they can make it on their own.

Some Bands have stood the taste of time and stayed together through thick and thin.Afrigo Band is one such example and inspiration

When money enters the equation as the prime motivator of an act, the original vision has to shift. Band members with hotels and flashy cars, with bulging wallets could be understood in this context when they start dodging shows and not caring what the fans will think.

There are those who argue that however long a band stays together, cracks will appear and they will have to be transformed or break up. But there are examples of bands that are defying this logic on the Ugandan scene. The praises are still flowing in for Qwela, a band made up of normal young people who were brought together not because of the thirst for money but by a shared passion for organic sounds. Qwela still stands. The legendary Afrigo band is 40 years and counting. It grew amorphous and at times, off-colour, but Afrigo trounces many of Ugandan bands when it comes to respect. They have been there and done that. There has been money over the years, doubtless but this has not split Afrigo. What then does it to take to keep a tight ship? The answer might lie in the work ethics of the leaders of the success stories. Afrigo and Quela are led by charismatic people who take no prisoners. It might also be wise to add that while the different strokes of band members will definitely mean different outcomes, band leaders who will succeed realize that this is the power of the band. They use these differences and take their bands forward.

Decoding Judith Babirye Judith Babirye needs no introduction. She has been on the scene for long enough to have developed a thick skin off which insults and accusations bounce off.

F

ew Ugandan musicians can claim to hold the kind of power that Judith Babirye does. There is the obvious power that politicians want to tap during election time and that was seen in the time of the crafting of the ‘Another Rap’ track. There is the power that some musicians wield, seen when they are shot and they appear to get a strange group of visitors all fighting to be photographed at the musician’s bedside. Then there is the silent, latent power that Babirye holds. She says something, even offhand and it makes national headlines. Judith Babirye needs no introduction. She has been on the scene for long enough to have developed a thick skin off which insults and accusations bounce off. She is in that realm of personalities that eventually become enigmas, never bothering to

answer to every rumour that appears in the press.

Who she was Ten years or so ago, Judith Babirye was the prudish musician who vowed never to consort with the worldly scene. She famously was quoted saying she would not perform at events supported by liquor companies. Babirye was known for her short cropped hair, making her look every inch the tom boy. It was whispered that it was because of her strict husband, who would not tolerate the lifestyle of musicians. It was also said he was her manager, so he had the final word regarding her career. Babirye’s former schoolmates in high school describe her as a strict mulokole, who was respected for her stand on many issues of morality. Her moral code was unbreakable and this seems to

have continued into her life out of Iganga Senior Secondary School. At that school, she was respected by even the teachers; no wonder then that she ended up being the head girl. And woe unto you if you crossed the path of the head girl.

Career Babirye has said she was always musical. She, however, burst onto her country’s musical consciousness about 14 years ago. When she came on the scene, there was only one other gospel musician who could roll with the secular artistes – Wilson Bugembe. The rest has been history, as she has moved on from glory to glory. There could have been many observers who watched to see when and how she would

Judith Babirye has been dropping hit after hit for all those years and the rollercoaster ride seems to only be getting merrier. All in all, the musician seems to be something to everyone. Her chosen musical style, a laid back reggae that appeals to the Ugandan tradition of drum-based narratives is her strongest tool, though there are those who believe it is her voice.

Disc Spinner By Night Benjie Okwenje is an expert juggler. He has his cake and eats it too. By day, he is an investment banker but when the sun sets, he is an expert disc spinner.

I

n the entertainment industry, there is a perceived belief that all the players who have names worth mentioning are strugglers who have come through drudgery. Many think that musicians, disc jockeys and actors are supposed to be losers whose only recourse is the job they have. DJ Global, however, is an outlier. He is not your everyday dyed-in-the-wool player who sleeps in the day and waits for the sun to go down before he can become useful to his country. He is proud of his life; he dons a banker’s suit in the day and in the evening, he finds his clients at the club. We sought him out to find out what makes him tick.

Who is Dj Global? DJ Global aka Global Schemes, while based in Uganda, is truly a global citizen. My interests in different musical styles developed at an early age. It all started back in the first year of high school, when I was introduced to 2 Technic 1210’s (turntables). My love and passion for music is clear to anyone who has heard me produce songs or spin tracks in the hottest nightspots across the globe.

56 May.2014

Tell us about your childhood? My childhood was amazing. I am Ugandan by nationality, but was raised in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Swaziland and the USA. My parents were diplomats and I have had the privilege of having lived and traveled all over the place. I therefore am very fortunate enough to have a world-wide network and I am very much at home no matter where I go.

How did you discover your love for music? As far back as I can remember, I have always loved music. It is something that came naturally. In addition to this, my older sisters loved music and it was always playing in the house

Professionally you’re a banker/ foreign exchange broker, when did you decide to switch? And why? I have never switched and it is still something I currently do. So I actually do both. There is no contradiction as one happens during the day, the other at night

CAREER CORNER

I have been DJ-ing and producing music since highschool, so not sure exactly when I entered the music industry. But I have done quite a bit over the years.

How have you managed to juggle both careers? Two words: Time Management

There are rumors that you completely gave up banking for music, is that true? Like I said before, I do both and I have no immediate plans of giving up one or the other

How did your family and friends take the change in careers from a successful banker to a DJ a profession may are struggling with in Uganda? My family has been and will always be supportive of anything I do. They know that I am smart enough to always make the right decision. And it’s because of this that they support me 100% both in my music and banking careers.

What is your view on what it takes to be a successful DJ in Uganda? And how do you rate yourself in the industry? First and foremost, it always begins with the love for music. To be a DJ, you have to love music. The other key pointer in being a successful DJ is you need to be able to understand and read your crowd. Your job is to get people dancing and having a good time.

58 May.2014

Lastly, always be prepared for an event and be willing to be flexible. Of course, the advice above assumes that you already have the necessary skills to be a DJ.

Do you have any advice for any people there with dreams outside their professions? As long as you are passionate about something then you should chase that dream. The ideal thing would be to do both at the same time. A win-win situation.

CAREER CORNER So you entered the music industry in 2003 what have you been up to since then? I have been DJ-ing and producing music since high-school, so not sure exactly when I entered the music industry. But I have done quite a bit over the years. I have played at quite a number of high profile events around the world. While in New York City, I was a staple at Club NV on Wednesdays. I also featured at other top night clubs such as Club Cheetah and

Chano8

Sounds of Brazil (S.O.B’s). Having graduated from New York University, I also played at a variety of the university’s events. On the African continent, I played at events in Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. In addition to being a DJ, I am a member of the duo called Market Makers; a formidable team and production house that uses its resources as a one-stop-shop for all musical professional needs: from music and video production, songwriting, image, and marketing. On the music production side, I have produced music for some regional and international artists including Kelly Rowland (USA), Samini (Ghana), Slikour (South Africa), P-Unit (Kenya) and Ugandan artists Jose Chameleone, Bebe Kool, Navio, Lilian to name a few.

What inspires you? My family inspires me the most. They give me the necessary fuel to work hard and try and achieve the most that I can in life

What should your fans expect from DJ Global 2014? I plan on continuing to push my DJ brand, so they can expect to see playing at various events and parties. I also plan to get back to releasing original music. I was recently featured in the “UG Cypher”, a song that features Uganda’s top rappers. So I will use this as a spring-board to get back to producing and releasing original music.

What are your philosophies in life? You only have one life. Get the most out of it.

Sina

Makosa was inspired by fights within the band

Though little known outside East Africa, Les Wanyika;s Sina Makosa is one of the most popular classics in the region.

Rhythm guitarist Omar Shabini composed Sina Makosa after he fell out with and parted company with the founding brothers, Wilson and George Peter Kinyonga to form Orch Les Wanyika in November 1978.

O

n the surface, Sina Makosa is about two men fighting for a woman yet both are married, so one is saying to the other “I don’t have a problem with you why do you want to kill me, you have a wife at home and I have mine too so why are we fighting” However, word has it that the song was not inspired by a feud between two men but rather by fighting within the band. Rhythm guitarist Omar Shabini composed Sina Makosa, after he fell out with and parted company with the founding brothers, Wilson and George Peter Kinyonga to form Orch Les Wanyika in November 1978. Sina Makosa became a hit that won gold records. Sina Makosa, has been redone with cover versions by several other famous musicians, like the late ‘Cool’ James Dunda, Soukous Stars and many more. 60 May.2014

The song usually strikes a nostalgic cord with many Ugandans who were old enough to understand the political turbulence of Amin’s 70s and Obote’s 80s.

Les Wayika; The band and more tributary bands Formed in 1971 by brothers Wilson Peter and George Peter Kinyonga, both born in Kigoma, Tanzania. They joined Jamhuri Jazz Band in 1966, which was one of Tanzania’s most popular bands. They moved to Arusha in 1970, forming Arusha Jazz with their other brother, William Peter, and received sponsorship for their equipment. The group then moved to Kenya, receiving a recording contract in 1972. They recruited

on side projects. Simba Wanyika added “Original” to their name to prevent confusion with Les Wanyika and its splinter group, Super Wanyika. Simba regained its popularity in the mid-’80s, releasing many hits and touring Europe in 1989.

Omar quit the band in the late ‘70s, taking many musicians with him and forming Les Wanyika. Simba Wanyika added more musicians, but brother George quit in 1980 and took more musicians with him to form Orchestra Jobiso. Eventually, he reconsidered and rejoined Simba, still working with Jobiso

However, all was not the well between Omari and the Kinyonga brothers, who parted company in 1977. Alongside Malanga, Rashid Juma, Phoney Mkwanyule, Stanely Mtambo and others, he formed Orch Les Wanyika in November 1978.

The Band Now

T

he death of bandleader and guitarist John Ngereza in February 2000 put the future of the Kenyan band Les Wanyika in jeopardy. An offshoot of Simba Wanyika, a band that moved from Tanzania to Kenya in 1991, Les Wanyika had continued to inspire dancing with their energetic approach to African rumba. Although little known outside of Africa, the band was cherished in its East Africa and their lengthy list of regional hits include “Sina Makosa,” “Paulina,” and “Pamela.” www.natari.com described their sound as “crystal clear with lovely guitaring and infectious singing.” www.majama.com claimed that “this is classic Swahili rumba with great guitar interweaving and some very cool horn/sax combinations.” Combining new recordings of old hits and new tunes, Les Wanyika recorded their final album, Amigo, in 1998. Rhythm guitarist and chief composer Omari Shebani died shortly before the album’s release. For a brief period, in the late ‘70s, members of Les Wanyika also played together as Super Wan

F

ille and her Manager MC Kats to discuss her new hit single ‘No Money rmx’ with Vampino and this is what she had to say. Who wrote No money?

I love the collabo and I believe Vampino blended really well with my voice and am sure that why most listeners love it too. I was impressed by the outcome and am planning on doing more collaborations in the future.

I did some work writing it with my producer Andy who is actually teaching me a lot about song writing.

What do you think sets your music apart from your other wanna be artists?

What inspired the song? Any personal experiences behind the making of the song? No there was no personal attachment to the song, I just realized that most girls in my generation were dating men who had money and it was rarely or never about love. How do you feel about the collaboration with Vampino on the remix, should we expect anymore collabos?

66 May.2014

My music is based on reality and on ground issues. It is inspired by experiences from my friends and I. When we go to studio my manager and I build a concept and work on that as a true story we want to put across. Who shot the first video of No money? The video to the original ‘no money’ was shot by B reezy videos.

Fille’s music career is on the rise.RIGHT Vampino and Fille in the music video

Why did you later decide to do a remix for this song? Are you creating more remixes from you other songs?

The tabloids have put you and MC kats in a more than professional relationship, Is there any truth to this?

I felt the original song wasn’t getting the recognition it deserved and it would benefit from a remix with a talented artist like Vampino. Yes there will be more, just keep waiting.

Wow, Kats and I are good friends is all I can say, He is also my manager he helps me a lot actually. He got Vampino and Goodlfy onto my Remixes.

Where was the video shot?

Fille you’re a relatively new artist on the block and we are anxious to see what’s next, what are you planning for 2014?

The remix video was shot at Garden city in a saloon I like I can’t seem to recall the name. I will let you know when I do We all appreciate the quality and acknowledge it is a better video than the original but we have to ask, what was the budget estimate it? The video cost approximately 1.2m. It was done by Nicko Films.

YOUR HEALTH

Why You Must Acquaint Yourself With The Paternity Test Mubiru, a senior government analyst, “The results from the analysis strongly support Peter Njegula as the biological father of the deceased Paddy Bitama. They don’t support Richard Ssali as paternally related to Bitama. Therefore Peter Njegula is the rightful father”. But this is not an isolated case. In this age of technology, it is becoming easier to find out the paternity of anyone. The cases of the past where women had children with their neighbours and then passed them off as those sired by their real husband seem to be sliding into a place where they belong – the past.

Why would a woman do this?

Paddy Bitama (R.I.P), a famous comedian in Uganda’s paternity was questioned when he passed on.

I

t caused a lot of chaos beyond the speculations about what really killed him to the number of wives and children he left behind, there seemed to be many unanswered questions. The most controversial was the fact that Bitama (Real name Patrick Ssali) had been fathered by another man and raised by another. In other words Bitama’s mother duped another man into raising another man’s offspring. According to a report signed by Andrew

68 May.2014

The reasons vary, according to Catherine Okello, a counsellor with ATC Counselling services. “Some women get married but still continue to have affairs outside their marriages, sometimes with close friends or relatives of the family as was the case of Njegula. Other women get married to men they think are not good looking enough and end up having affairs with men they feel are better looking. There was an April 2013 story in the Daily Monitor where a woman confessed that she seduced handsome men, fell pregnant by them, then moved on without disclosing to them that she had conceived because she was only interested in bearing good looking children, not endangering her marriage. “ This will not be the first time that a woman has employed such “wit” to ensure her survival and that of her offspring, and it most definitely will not be the last time. So how does a man protect himself from being fooled?

YOUR HEALTH A child’s true paternity is no walk in the park. Before you get taken for a ride, wouldn’t you want to find out if that child is really yours?

The Paternity Test DNA testing involves the direct examination of the genetic material that a child inherited from its biological parents. DNA is located throughout the human body and is in the same identical form and therefore the DNA in blood is the same as that in skin, muscle, bone, teeth, hair and other tissues. The DNA a person has is fully established at conception and remains constant throughout life. During the paternity testing process, the genetic characteristics of the child are compared to those of its father. The microbiologist draws samples of fluid from any part of the body like saliva or blood and the cells are removed and tested.

Chano8

If the tested man does not have the genetic characteristics necessary to be the biological father of the child, he is excluded; but if the tested man’s DNA does contain those genetic characteristics, then the probability that he is the true biological father is calculated. Where to go for DNA test in Uganda. • Government Analytical Laboratory in Wandegeya • MBN Clinical Laboratories plot 28 Nakasero road in Kampala. • Gulu independent hospital • easyDNA Uganda, Bugolobi Medical Centre, 134 Spring Road, Kampala, Uganda

When the mother will not consent to a paternity test Do not burn your bridges with her by harassing her. Be civil. Have a conversation with her and establish the reasons she doesn’t not want to comply. For all you know, the child could be yours and you will need a cordial relationship to raise the child in question. If civility fails, obtain a court order with the assistance of a lawyer requesting her to agree to a paternity test. Failure to do so would result into criminal prosecution.

Relations

I have been dating my man for the really ready to commit. I haven’t met place when he offers. What should I Two years is such a long time to be with someone without meeting their family. Family plays an integral role in the success of any long term relationship. They are the ones who understand your man better so having a working relationship with them is very important. If you have never met them in the two years you have been dating then your man does not consider you worthy for introduction. You are simply a mirage that is fading gradually but surely in his life.

F

irst off you need to understand how the mind of a man works. If a man is comfortable around you and proud of having you as his woman, he will take pride in showing you off. You make him look good and he wants the whole world to know it. Whether it is his family or friends he will want to show what a great catch you are. If he is reluctant to show you off, then there is problem. This may be based on the fact that he is uncertain about his relationship with you. He simply may be in it for the great sex that you give him and nothing else. Or he may care about you but he does not see himself settling down with you. This guy simply does not know how to get rid of you since there is no glaring vice about you that he does not like. He may just not be that into you. He may be keeping you around while he waits for something better to show up so you are doing the job of a seat filler. When the time is right, he will gently, but surely give you the boot.

72 May 2014

If your so called man asks you to give him a heads up whenever you want to come visit then there is problem. While it is polite to inform him when you are coming over, this should not be set in stone. Its is within your mandate to show up unannounced just to see what’s going on when you’re not around. If he outlandishly objects to this then you have reason to be suspicious. As his woman you have a right to exercise some level of ownership of your man. If he wont relent and let you enjoy some level of freedom when it comes to his space then it is clear that your relationship is not what you might think it is. Most men love for their women to come around their place because it adds an element of novelty to the relationship. This is because most couples that do not live together spend most of their time together away from home. It is important to sit down with your man and ask him what is going on. He needs to be open and tell you what his plans are for the two of you. Bring all the afore mentioned issues to him and let him candidly explain. If what he is saying does not hold water and he refuses to change then it’s about time you throw those two years into a trash can and start all over. There are plenty of serious men out there so do not despair.

hip Dilema Chano8

last two years but I do not feel like he is his family and I’m only welcome to his do? Is this guy serious about us??

How Do I Know If My Man Is Serious About Us?

W

ell two years is a long time. How old are you? Unless it is your age difference he is worried about, I see why you are concerned about meeting his family. It is an important step in a serious committed relationship. When a man takes you to meet the important people in his life, it means one of the following: (a) he thinks you are wonderful and worth showing off and is sure others will agree; or (b) he thinks you are wonderful and worth showing off and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. Either way it’s a good sign, to him you are much more than a casual acquaintance. Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean you are about to start a family of your own or rings are getting put on fingers, but his family’s approval is the final straw if he is hesitant maybe he thinks you won’t get it. All in all two years is a long time to be dating and still be hidden from the family, it seems he is taking too much of his time or does not think you’re the woman he wants to introduce to his family. Have you introduced him to your family? If not you should try it, It might be the right step to show him how you feel about commitment and your relationship. If that has been done and it still isn’t working then it’s time to have “The conversation”, everyone in a relationship know this one. It’s the conversation that answers your question of if you have a future together and draw plans for your lives together. Let him know you’re ready to commit and show him the benefits of being committed. If you 73 May.2014

want him to commit to you, you need to show him that you’re a person he would want to take to the next stage of his life. Make a list of ways that you can improve your best qualities, whether it’s to show you’re more independent by cutting back on how often you see him, you should maintain your own passions, friendships, and goals so he doesn’t think that you’re clingy and be afraid that you only want to spend all of your time with him. Show him your ability for compassion. He should know that you can understand his feelings, help him when he’s feeling hurt, and be sensitive to his weaknesses. He has to think that continuing to be with you will help him improve as a person. Lastly don’t be disappointed when it doesn’t work and it turns out he is not ready to commit. Sometimes we do give our best but not everything in life goes as planned. You should know that you gave it your all and feel good about how hard you’ve worked on the relationship. When it doesn’t work, there are two things you can do, either give it more time and hang in there or end it and move on. May 2014 73

#10 Olibeera Nange JULIANA KANYOMOZI Olibeera Nange is a song where Juliana promises ‘forever’ and we actually connect with her. It’s one of those songs every girl puts on her wedding playlist and is one of the most popular songs being dedicated to everybody’s ‘someone special’. We get the feeling that this song will be added to Juliana’s list of timeless classics.

T

here can never be too many tales about a onenight stand turned longterm love affair especially after this Valentine’s Day period. “All about last night” is all about giving people hope that anyone can fall hard, despite the lack of a courtship and live happily ever after. This is a story about two AfricanAmerican couples in their 30’s facing dating issues in downtown LA. It stars Danny (Michael Ealy), Debbie (Joy Bryant), (Bernie) Kevin Hart and Joan (Regina Hall) who all play different diverse couples.

Band Review

Qwela

With their performances, the Qwela band has proven to be indominatable.

Q

wela is not given as much recognition as it should. One only has to listen to their soulful live performances. The stunning vocal ranges combine beautifully with the masterful instrument medley. Qwela is a band from Uganda with a unique afro-fusion flavour of music. Qwela means ‘pure’ in Rukiga- one of Uganda’s ethnic languages. Their debut album ‘Kidepo’ was well received and their fan base has continued to grow. Qwela’s sound is a fusion of traditional African background and western instruments. Their niche- reaches

a section of society that is not catered for by the current of digital, recycled music. When I listen to Qwela, the words that come to my mind are wholesome and beautiful. Take their song Okello, a story of a child called Okello, who who did not give up on his dream to become a footballer even though he was abducted by rebels. Or the soulful lament of a mother in Kirii Omulangira, whose son went to the city and has not returned for a very longtime. Or even Njabala, where an incompetent bride is lightly mocked by her mother. My prediction is that Qwela is going to be around for a very long time.

The Band The band leader is Joe Kahirimbanyi . On bass guitar Emma Mutebi, and Sam Bisaso. Then there is Ian Busingye on the acoustic guitar, Maureen Rutabingwa alias Moroots on the saxophone, Emmanuel Dragu on trumpet, Festo Mugume on the keyboard, Rico Del Monte on the percussion and Roy Kisika on the drums. They perform at Emin Pasha every Friday.

My prediction is that Qwela is going to be around for a very long time.

avio’s PRIDE album was launched 14th Dec 2013 and even now the Navcorp CEO is still doing East African tours for this album.

good news for anyone who is looking for value for their money.

First time we heard of this album we knew which songs to expect and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it, but this is no ordinary 10 or 14 song album. It has 17 full tracks with 4 bonus trucks too.

Navio has introduced HipHop to Ugandans on his own terms and kept a strong hold on his heritage without having to compromise one for the other. He says the album is a reflection of the pride he has in the journey HipHop, Ugaflow particularly, has undergone and where it started from.

The popular Trouble and Omu Kw’Omu, Komawo and Lekka Kwenyumiraza are the first that stand out then the others grow on you as soon as each track starts. This is

The album features collaborations with both African and international artists such as Keith Sweat, Unique, DR. Sid, Sauti Sol, Inoss B, Madtraxx & Zuess, Wiz Kid, Ice Prince,

Pride begins with ‘Kigozi’, his family name, which explores the journey and struggles endured by artists in the industry. The Producers on this album include; Aethan for Aethan music, Major7 from SWEAT STUDIOS (ATLANTA GA), JB(Congo), EL for BBNZ live(Ghana), Madtraxx for Red republic (Kenya), Hannz for Hannz production and Kennis Music (Nigeria). Ssente by G-Snake

VIDEO REVIEW

U

ganda’s famed reptile goddess unveiled her latest video ‘Sente’ at the Rogue a city center club in Kampala on the 19th 0f February this year. The event was as colorful as her outfit. It was an invite only red carpet event covered by various media houses. Khalifa Aganaga there to show his support with an amazing performance. The video scripted, directed and produced by Kim XP is full of color and most scenes were shot at night. When it comes to this Video G Snake did not pinch pennies as shown by the limousines, outfits, vintage cars and number of cameras used to capture the video. It is filled with skimpily clad girls in tiny shorts and see through tank tops but I guess that is what sells in the industry. Shockingly there were no scenes with any snakes of any kind in this video hmmm... The song ‘Sente’ is the 3rd song on her first album. The artist has 9 songs so far such as Kampala, Si Ngoma Nganda, Sente, Ani, Customer care, Jangu, Nonya, Sorry, and Zigi zaga. G-snake says she sings mainly for the mature business and party people and ensures that all her songs have a message that they can relate to. What you didn’t know about G-snake is that she is a down to earth, humble, happily married woman blessed with 2 children and always puts family first. She believes that Ugandan music videos have come a long way and are becoming more creative and should catch up with international standards.

Gossip Reloaded Hilderman Annoys Catholics With Costume

T

he wearing of civilian clothes for clergy is permissible. But when a civilian wears clothes meant for the clergy, it is considered an abomination.

Singer, Dr Hilderman (Hillary Kiyaga) recently found himself the subject of the wrath of avid Catholics when he turned up for his ‘Yee Ki Kyo Abafirisuti’album launch dressed like the Pope. As he hit the Equatorial Parking stage, complete in a cassock, a long button front robe a broad sash around the waist and a crucifix that symbolizes might and power, fans looked on with bated breath. However, a section of Catholic fanatics never saw the funny side and some walked out of the venue cursing. “Kikyaamu nnyo Hilderman Kyakoze” (What Hilderman has done is an abomination; they cursed as they filed out of the venue.

Hildeman dressed like a Bishop

When Chano 8 contacted Dr. Hilderman, he sounded apologetic and insisted he never intended to rub anyone the wrong way. It was just a fancy dress wear idea!

Keko Spots New ‘Tomboy’ Bold Head Hip-hop star Joselyne Keko has changed her looks. Keko was seen with a bald head at Benezeri’s ‘Champion’ album launch at MTN Arena, Lugogo where she was one of the performers of the evening. She was also spotted at the Buzz teenies Awards and at the Club Rouge grand reopening with the new look. We are not sure yet whether this is a fashion statement or she has done it for medical and other reasons.

He has however chosen to map his own musical path. His Champion concert at Lugogo MTN Arena literally brought the roof down.

On the evening, the humble, well-mannered and gifted student at Uganda Christian University (UCU), was so lyrical especially on the Mama track, he was branded Uganda’s Kendrick Lamar. It was as well he failed to hold back the tears after the show.

For someone who is just starting out, Chano8 noted with keen interest that Benezeri belongs to a rare breed of artistes. He is a conscious rapper with bottomless reserves of raw talent. In two years, he al-

Ruyonga, Enygma, Big Trill and Maurice Kirya, were on show to show hip-hop brotherly love. If anything, Benezeri should start wearing very dark Ray Bans at all times. He has a very bright hip hop future.

Chagga Appointed As Radio’s Manager

T

he Latest info reaching is us is that, the former Goodlyfe crew member Mozey Radio has hired Chagga as his new manager. This is after the duo fellout with their manager Jeff Kiwa. Weasel is believed to have made up his mind to join Radio in breaking up from Goodlyfe. The Dynamic duo now refer to themselves as Radio and Weasel

Zari, who has since taken on another man, Pharouque Sempala and plastered their romance online for all and sundry, took time off kissing Pharouque and responded immediately. ‘The ZARI ALL WHITE PARTY IS a ZARI BRAND not a ZARI and IVAN thing so restrain from tarnishing my brand as it still lives…. Thank You’ Meanwhile, Chano8 has exclusively learnt that Zari is fighting to have the patent to the White Party, held every December in Guvnor and is in the process of changing its name.

Zari, Ivan Feud Over White Party Patent The Zari All-White party has been a permanent fixture on Kampala’s social calendar. However, it will soon morph into the Dee White Party, as Ivan Ssemwanga celebrates his new found romance with TV personality, Doreen Komuhangi. Although Doreen, the NBS TV morning Breeze co-host vehemently denied any liaisons with Ssemwanga, we can confirm that Ivan has secretly planned it to spite Zari. Ivan alerted his friends on social media. ‘Doreen White Party. Come December. The former host can no longer afford it so Dee took over the party.’ 93 May.2014

News is that she has changed the concept to a Bourgeoisie Party and she intends to announce the changes in a press conference planned for early June. It is unlikely that Pharouque will sponsor the Zari Bourgeoisie party, since his only contribution so far to the relationship has been saliva, muscles and sweat. As someone not used to the limelight, Doreen has since denied any romance with Ivan Ssemwanga or the Dee White Party. “White has never been my colour. I am not replacing Zari, and I have never wanted publicity. I respect those two. Hope they do the same in return.” She wrote. Reliable sources in Semwanga’s family insist the relationship is true and Ivan is set to meet Doreen’s family. “She (Doreen) is shocked that the secret came out but things are in high gear,” May.2014
