I
t was a day of reckoning for some big names in the entertainment industry as the youth gave their own verdict on their work by rewarding the best in the industry according their own tastes and preferences.
Rising Diva Irene Ntale scooped the Best Female Youth Star Award after beating stiff competition from the likes of Rema Namakula, Sheebah Karungi, Leila Kayondo, Jackie Chandiru, Fille, Grace Nakimera and Angelina . The awards were part of National and International youth day celebrations organised by Kadanke Group which is a youth marketing and advertising company that focuses on reaching out to youths through a medium that educates and entertains
KA YOUTH AW
The awards ceremony held at Kati Kati restaurant were developed as a new platform to reward and celebrate the people who matter in the lives of the youth. This year's theme was ‘Building A Better Uganda, Partnering With Youth’ which showcased and rewarded some of Uganda’s best in the industry. Cindy was also one of the big winners, scooping the Female Music Achiever after beating former Blu 3 colleague Lillian Mbabazi, Keko, Esther Nabaasa, Naava Grey, Grace Ruth, Maureen Nantume and Ratchell Namubiru. There was shock and drama when Veteran socialites Sylvia Owori and Judith Heard clashed at the awards ceremony in front of a shocked crowd dominated by youth who look up to them. They have taken thrit rivalry to new levels, clashing at every opportunity! Heard and Owori were invited by the organizers to present awards to the winners but instead took to publicly exposing each other's dirty linen.

AFRICA LAUGHS SEASON II
"Kampala was left intoxicated with bouts of rib shattering laughter and tear dropping hilarity as Africa’s top comedians shared the same stage. And boy did the stand-up comedians tickle the city during the Club beer sponsored Africa Laughs show, hosted by the Krackers Comedy Outfit at Imperial Royale
T
he second season of Africa Laughs went down at Imperial Royale hotel with Africa’s top comedians given a chance to pit their wits against each another. The opening act was MC Kapale whose stronghold is Luganda went vulgar as he described different sex scenes and then came Ronnie Mcvex with a new Nigerian accent as he joked about media and journalists like NTV’s Frank Walusimbi reporting at the comfort of their offices. Although Alex Muhangi knows the Ugandan audience so well, and they know him too a lot was expected from him but he disappointed many by recycling jokes.
17
In steps Basket Mouth. The Nigerian was the host for the night and the star of the night as he still managed to bring down the roof with his natural jokes despite taking the MC role. jokes as he left the audience in stitches joking about how to lay Kampala women. Patrick 'Salvado' Idringi lived up to the hype of ‘Best comedian in the country’ With his singing antics and Ombokolo jokes before Anne Kansiime left the audience yearning for more as she appeared for a few minutes. She was dressed in her trade mark school uniform and made her signature kid jokes. Kenya's Eric Omondi was the surprise big name because he still managed to pull off fresh jokes despite having been here four times before. The lanky comedian perfected the art of cracking jokes about music and how people act in bars and oh boy he too like Basket Mouth is a natural. Although Malawi's Daliso Chaponda tried something different by cracking jokes about former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, he too was later forced to join the sex jokes band wagon. The last act was Congo's Eddie Kadi who showed different dancing antics of various countries and then the problems with social media and dating. The revellers left shortly past midnight feeling cracked up.

Miss Uganda Beauty With A Purpose All the glitz And Glamour
The Miss Uganda 2014 Grand Finale was a glamorous event with a full house. These included "Corporates", Rotary club of Sesse, fashionistas, socialites and of course the contestants family and relatives. As many were curious about the agricultural theme as they were anxious to see the beauty queens. All were pleasantly surprised!
T
he recently crowned Miss Tourism graced the event too. There was a cocktail prior to the event and all the guests had a red carpet experience not to mention some free drinks earlier in the night for the VIP guests. The paparazzi must have had a field day as the guests’ fashion was out of this world. The stage was different from the usual and the performances were electrifying with Ndere Troupe, Myco Ouma, Caroline Akello and Desire Luzinda who put on an amazing show with her well built male dancers. The fashion houses included House of Baraka and Miss Fixit. Roger Mugisha and Flavia Tumusiime killed it as MCs. They absolutely complemented each other. Although the judges asked tough questions related to agriculture, the training at Bukalasa helped the contestants. This time round, Brenda Nanyonjo the chief organiser recorded her speech as most people who have attended this event before know that she always breaks down when it gets to the vote of thanks part. Sponsors and partners included Mirinda, Namunkekera Rural Industrial Center, TV Africa, SMS ONE among others. The winner of the night was 23 year old Leah Kalanguka from Iganga district taking the crown and a brand new car home. “I was overwhelmed when my name was read as the winner. I couldn’t have won this pageant if it was not by the grace of God,” Said Kalanguka shortly after being crowned. Regional winners included Tayebwa Christine (Western), Caroline Nantambi (Central), Sharon Auma (Northern) and Flavia Ibyara (East).

The new look interior which is now sound proof gives an executive club feel and the smooth finish gives an ambience of a modern state-of-the art night club something of a musical bar. There are artistic works all over the place with the roof splendidly designed in form of musical instruments like the keyboard, guitar and percussion drums. Reflector lights illuminate the walls and roofing murals with photographs of some of Uganda’s all time great artists like Paul Kafeero, Rachel Magoola and Isaiah Katumwa himself hanging on the walls. The down to earth humble Katumwa quietly walked on stage at 11PM drawing a thunderous applause from the crowd and the adoring fans started cheer-

Although there were sound glitches here and there, Katumwa remained composed and kept his cool and demeanour with songs like ‘Sinza’ and ‘Maama Africa’ which he dedicated to the guests and adoring fans Others who also enjoyed a moment worth remembering were lead guitarist, Charmant Mushaga who played the guitar using his teeth with Katumwa backing him up with the Saxophone which melted down the audience in an electrifying moment of excitement. The other instrumentalists on a lovey-dovey night of Jazz included Joshua Mutebi on the bass guitar, Pragmo on the keyboard and new Jazz star Michael Kitanda on the saxophone, among others.

Radio And Weasel In Neera Concert
"For the second time this year, Radio and Weasel had a full house concert. This time round the concert dubbed ‘Neera’ was held at Freedom City on Entebbe Road. In May, they held another successful concert at Hotel Africana People’s space dubbed Amaaso-Ntunga"
A
lthough Radio and Weasel did not have much to talk about in terms of their dress code and manner of stage entrance, they still did manage to pull one big talking point-assembling a star studded line-up of curtain raisers which included music Doctor Jose Chameleone who showed up with his family. The dynamic duo stepped on stage a few minutes past midnight. They were dressed casually, tight pants with a black and red t-shirt for Weasel and a brown kitenge suit for Mowzey. Although the much anticipated spark was not seen in their performances, they still managed to rock fans with hit songs such as 'Magnetic', 'Nkwetaga,' 'Amaaso' to adoring fans who sang along and cheered them every time they did a hit song. The duo also took time to preach about maternal health care issues “Apart from singing out our hearts, we are also Save the Children ambassadors in Uganda. Men, whenever your wife is pregnant, please make sure she attends antenatal care as required. It can be a start to reducing maternity deaths in this country,” Mowzey Radio, told revellers. Jose Chameleone who performed alongside his son Abba Marcus did not have kind words for corporate companies as he threw jibes at them for inviting and sponsoring ‘foreign’ international artists other than supporting local talent drawing a thunderous applause and approval from the crowd before singing ‘Wale Wale’ which brought the crowd to its feet.

ast month, all roads led to the Golf Course Hotel for the unveiling of Guinness' new look bottle.Which now comes with more pronounced features including an accentuated harp design, a more distinct Arthur Guinness signature and a stylish gold foil cover that gives the pack a modern sleek
look.
Although the colour black is synonymous with sad moments like funerals and demonstrations, this one was special for the theme night was appropriately dubbed 'All-Black VIP Party', and unlike most events where city dwellers don't heed to the dress code, they didn't disappoint this time round with celebrities mingling freely with the ordinary guests all dressed to kill in Black. In a night which had majority of the guests following on the strict dress code of black, the ladies out competed the gents with flawless fashionable gowns and mini dresses. The house was already busy by 7:00PM as many revel-

lers kept time in anticipation of free booze that was earlier promised by the organisers. By 8:00PM, it was a full house as the event attracted hordes of Guinness consumers, music lovers and celebrities who drunk and mingled freely with fans because there was no special treatment for them as it was an all VIP event. As a result, it was such a beautiful setting that, Nigerian standup comedian Basket Mouth who graced the event was in the crowd alongside musicians like Jose Chameleone, Cindy Sanyu, Maurice Kirya, Irene Ntale, Navio and socialite Sylvia Owori, among others. By 9:00PM, the stage was set and the mood was heating up, it was a full house in the hotel's Banquet hall, as fans enjoyed a non-stop flow of chilled Guinness as DJ Aludah spinned the discs for the excited fans. Ugandan diva Cindy then took to the stage, belting out her popular hits such as ‘Amateeka’, and ‘Selector’ as the audience danced and sang along. Uganda's self-proclaimed music doctor, Jose Chameleone then followed as he thrilled guests with his latest hits like 'Wale Wale', and 'Owakabi', among others. Then soon the moment of the night arrived when DJ Exclusive, Wizkid's official spin master, took over the turntables ushering the man of the night Nigeria's new kid on the block, Wizkid real names Ibrahim Ayodeji Balogun who stepped on stage a few minutes past 11:00PM amidst wild hysterical cheers from the sea of black revellers who pulled out their smart phones to record the proceedings..

Wizkid who had earlier promised to bring down the roof, did not disaapoint as he took the audience on a musical journey, kicking off his performance with ‘Holla At Yo Boy’ and ‘Tease Me’, before taking it a notch higher with his more recent tracks. The award winning singer and songwriter then continued with some of his songs that feature other great African singers like ‘JaiyeJaiye’, featuring Femi Kuti, ‘Star Boy’, ‘Love My Baby’ and the monster hit ‘Only Man She Want’ featuring Popcaan. By the time he performed ‘Sexy Mama’ featuring Iyanya, the crowd went wild with ladies even storming the stage at one point. The Nigerian superstar did not only tease with his music, but he also left a mark in our music industry that Nigerian music will not easily be washed away as it is still a big force to reckon with. Excited fans still wanted a piece of him by the time he wound up his performances in a night to remember.

Q& A
SHOULD ASPIRING MU GROUPS OR JUST HIT TH Miles Rwamiti is presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.
I
t depends on what you are looking for. If you’re all “unknown” it will be hard. What happens with groups is that in most cases they start off on the right note but along the way they all want to outshine each other. The different agendas of the members usually causes tension and hence the break ups or the groups just failing to reach their full potential. While managing one artist is hard enough, managing a group is a whole different ball game as you have to try to meet individual needs while not compromising group needs. Also, when most Ugandan musicians start groups they fail to look at the long term goals. They usually have no strategies or objectives written down. It’s usually “Let’s get together and get one or two songs, make videos, hit the radios and maybe a concert!” For some reason when they break up from the group they tend to succeed. It is as if they have learnt some hard lessons and realize that it is do or die.
Ask Rwamiti 54

They start to be more focused because at this point they feel that if they fail it is an individual failure and they will only have themselves to blame. They now become go-getters. That is the reason most musicians that break away from groups tend to succeed

Judging from world trends, it seems like the more popular music groups get, the closer they get to separating. Whereas some of the group members have gone from height to height in prosperity in their solo music careers others have left bitter feelings in their wake.

most of these groups. Today, she is the bread winner for the Team No Sleep under Jeff Kiwanuka. The group also includes Pallaso and A Kay. In a chat with Chano 8, Sheebah argues that in order for a musician to blossom in their career they need to be confident. All through her career she strives to prove critics wrong. “I am who I am now because I didn’t adhere to disapprovals. It is about belief, and you can make it,” the Go down Low singer mentions.

SPECIAL FEATURE Chano8
Not much going on.
Bar Iryn Namubiru and Juliana Kanyomozi of the I-Jay who have gone on to become big in their right, a host other musical groups have not had much going for them. The Dream Galz (Leila, Rena and Anita) now sing in bedrooms and bathrooms. Leila Kayondo only sings because someone is ready to sponsor Studio fee. The Wafagio (sweepers) comprising Linda Mbabazi, Edith Mutunyi, Aggie Ayebare and Sheila Sempebwa have been wept off the musical landscape while there isn’t much to say about the Chilli
Galz and the Viva stars. “Some girls have turned into beggars. They are stranded and hopeless after being diddled by managers and failing to innovate,” says Coco Finger a former male act in Wafagio. Sustained solo stardom after success with a group is still a tall order for Ugandan musicians. However the unanswered question is: What is the recipe for going solo? Is it solely about music quality or is it about a revised positioning for an artist? I strongly believe that rules of going solo have more to do with positioning than music quality!
Rules of going solo: Why some succeed, why others fail. • Reinvention is key. Listeners should be able to make a clear distinction between the music you made with your former band and the music you make as a solo artist. The reinvention can either be lyrical or stylistic. • Do not get fooled by your initial success: When an incredibly successful band folds, its members are offered highly lucrative solo record deals by the major record labels. Sometimes, record labels engage in bidding wars to “steal away” members of a successful band – especially members that were perceived as being the creative core of a successful band. A noteworthy example is former Spice Girl Emma Bunton. While Emma Bunton cannot necessarily be labelled as a person with a long and sustained solo career, her sophomore album “Free Me” helps illustrate the idea that she did not get fooled be her initial solo success – which was largely fueled by her success with the Spice Girls. Her debut solo album “A girl like me” did not do particularly well in terms of sales but the singles off the album were very successful on various European charts. • Do not position yourself as a balladeer. There is a double-standard in the music today. People seem to be quite accepting of boybands and girl-bands singing slow
59
Chano8. November. 2014
love songs and making a career out of it. For some reason, this acceptance does not extend to solo artists whose catalog consists primarily of ballads – even if they are very good ballads. Only a handful of solo artists have been able to get away with this. Lionel Richie is a noteworthy example. The artist most guilty of violating this rule is the highly gifted and talented Gary Barlow from Take That. • Brand yourself independently of the band that launched you into the limelight: Solo pop stars are victims of double standards on multiple dimensions. Contrary to popular belief, solo stars are more than just their music. A failure to understand this can make the difference between success and failure. Musical reinvention in itself may not be sufficient. There needs to be a signature approach to stardom – unusually creative music videos, unique release strategies, or an image makeover that makes people forget that your career began in a band. The image makeover can be VERY powerful. While Robbie Williams branding was not necessarily striking, he succeeded in giving himself an image makeover. In contrast to the clean-cut image he had in Take That, he donned an image fuelled by a “larger than life” ego, cheeky (and somewhat odd) sense of humor, drugs, and an unapologetic womanizing streak. “Eria Ssebunya Bugembe Kasiwukira’s status as one of Uganda’s most respected music icons is acknowledged more in his death than in life".
W
ith the Kasiwukira R e cordi n g studio, he is one of the reasons Uganda’s music took a quantum leap to where it is now.
“The drill for a successful hit at the time was simple. If Kasiwukira didn’t buy your album, then chances were that you wouldn’t make money out of it. If he picked interest, it was a different story,” He says. Kasiwukira made a number of artistes then. The likes of Herman Basudde, Prince Paul Job Kafeero, Livingstone Kasozi and Lord Fred Ssebatta owed their rise to the platform given to them by the slain businessman.
The 55-year-old’s death at the hands of a motorist knocked during a morning jog has left more questions than answers. United in grief, everyone agrees he is in the league of music pioneer. Kasiwukira became popular as the number one distributor of cassette tapes, both empty and pre-recorded music tapes, which he imported from South Korea. This was before the advent of compact discs. He later upgraded and started paying off musicians to buy rights of their music, which he published on cassette tapes and distributed countrywide. Kasiwukira was like a godfather of the music industry.

Pioneer act. According to Joseph Batte a music critic, musicians in the 80’s and early 90’s became prolific because of working under the tutelage of Kasiwukira. He reckons Kasiwukira is certainly among the dozen most important people of all time to Uganda’s music industry.
Present day “band” musicians acknowledge the fact. Golden Band’s Mesach Semakula says Kasiwukira bought two of his albums: Abakazi Abaguma, which was released in 2005 and won him the Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) and First Aid in 2006. He has never looked back since. Wale Wale singer, Dr. Jose Chameleone explains that it was Kasiwukira who have him a first measure of his own worth. Chameleone explains that he was just

“He was supportive, encouraging and parental,” Chameleone narrates. “He supported my music career by buying over six of my albums; Jamila, Mambo Bado, Beyi Kali, among others. He bought all these albums at Ugx30Million.”
Much as Kasiwukira minted money out of the virgin trade, publishing for musicians of all walks, he was a rare specimen.

He was a rare character.
“He was quite generous. I remember I was one of the very first nonkadongokamu artists he released on his label in 1995,” Tshaka Mayanja tells Chano 8. Tshaka particularly remembers Kasiwukira for the invaluable help
he rendered when Aswad, the British Reggae group performed in Uganda. “Andrew (Rugasira) of VR Promotions sent me to Kasiwukira in 1995 to make cassettes with Aswad hits so as to popularize their music to the masses down town. It really worked. We sold cassettes on pickups blaring music and when Aswad came around, they had a fan base,” he recalls. Tshaka also mentions that if there was anyone who merits the credit for South African Reggae Musician Lucky Dube’s popularity in Uganda, it was Kasiwukira. As promoters, Tshaka and Rugasira, fought for answers, in stepped Kasiwukira who did a commendable job. He distributed Lucky Dube’s songs with abandon. Brian Kabiito of X Zone on HB Plaza, Luwum Street joined the cassette business when Kasiwukira was pondering other money minting ventures. He is praises for Kasiwukira’s work ethic. “He never saw me as competition but

since a music artiste always had to do live music to hit the studios. A ready cassette tape was the reward of hard work. Today, it is a far cry. Comedians like Amooti Omubalanguzi and Panadol wa bakyaala are musicians obtaining money by false pretence, thanks to the advent of CDs and piracy.

Fountain of enterprise. The irony. How does someone with a collapsed cassette business rise to a total net worth of about $25m (sh600b)? The answers lay in Kasiwukira’s work ethic and his calm demeanour. The celebration concert, slated for 12 December at Serena Hotel and supported by Nile Special, has been announced today at a press briefing at the same venue. Speaking on behalf of the Estate, Ms. Lydia Wamala revealed that the concert is a climax of a tenyear tribute project; the Elly Wamala All Stars, that kicked off in August. The project has ridden on the success of the renditions of the legend’s popular hits some of which are already enjoying considerable airplay. “Over the time period of this project, we have worked with the biggest contemporary music producers and artistes in Uganda. This is a celebration of Wamala’s lifelong commitment to knowledge gathering and sharing which, he mainly did through his songs,” said Ms. Wamala who also commended Nile Special for the support towards the organization of the concert. The Nile Special brand manager Timothy Kayondo stated that; “This concert is a toast to a true champion. Elly Wamala was a musician of distinguished qualities, a fact that earned him several awards during his career. This resonates well with Nile Special. Life in Obsessions (Dance group)
Acting: ‘THE HOSTEL’ Series
I joined Obsessions when I was 14 or 15 years old in S.1. I was discovered while dancing fat a talent event and they asked me to join, I said yes and they went ahead to talk to my parents who also agreed as long as I stayed in school. Obsessions taught me a lot especially how to take my dancing professionallyas well as taught us how to sing. Around my S.6, things got complicated. The group grew and there was more ambition and this started conflicting with my school schedule. So I left to finish high school.
My acting career started from way back in Obsessions at National Theatre that is when it hit me that I loved it and I was pretty good at it. When I joined ‘The Hostel’, it was the first time was truly famous, I would walk on the streets and people knew me mostly by the character of ‘Patra’ the show was big in the UK. I have fans in Nigeria, Kenya and a lot of other countries. I play ‘Patra’ a campus girl, a diva, the spoilt queen bee, and from an amazing family. She is overwhelmed by the responsibility of being the eldest and not disappointing
HB Toxic and Music I have always loved singing. I started from the church as a child and I enjoyed it but after all the vocal training in high school, I figured to try it out. I started HB Toxic with a very good friend of mine Brenda Nambi from Obsessions. We did a lot of songs. Honestly I don’t know what went wrong we are still friends, we were actually like sisters but i grew and somehow we went our separate ways. That wasn’t the end of me in the music industry, i have done some solo record and soon will be promoting it. I love music and always will. I guess I concetrate on acting and fashion more than music but I have never given it up.
Obsessions taught me a lot especially how to take my dancing professionally, taught us how to sing. Around my S.6 things got complicated. The group grew and there was more ambition and this started conflicting with my school schedule.

PRODUCER
PADDYM
The Man Behind Many Super Hits Topping Charts Across Uganda and East Africa “Producer Paddyman is one of the top producers in Uganda and East Africa. The award winning producer is behind some of the all time big hits in Uganda and has worked with almost all the top musicians in Uganda. Chano8 had an exclusive one on one with the jolly producer” Qn: Who is Paddyman and where did you grow up from?. Tell us about your family and Academic background. My real names are Paddy Mukasa Kayira I shortened it to Paddyman when I started professional music production. I got the name Mukasa from my dad Livingstone Mukasa. I am from Masaka though I grew up in Kampala with my Parents. My mother is called Sarah Nanono. I started music at the age of 13 while singing in church because I loved involving myself in ministry work and my love to serve God and passion in music initiated me into the industry. Qn: So when did you start production as profession? Professionally it all started as a result of playing the Keyboard in Church and many artists started asking me to play for them the keyboard during music productions. I started from Kasiwukira Studios and then joined Dream Studios on a part time basis. In 2005, I then Joined Eddie Yawe’s

Dream studios on full time before I opened my own studios in Makindye called Audio One. In 2008 I produced my first hit song ‘Tukundereze’ by Mesach Semakula which won many PAM awards and ‘Mama Mbire’ by Juliana and Bobi Wine. In 2009 I was introduced to Dr. Jose Chameleone and since then we worked on various projects that became big including ‘Basiima Ogenze’ in 2010, ‘Mukisa Gwo’ 2011, ‘Valu Valu’ in 2012, ‘Badilisha’ in 2013 and ‘Tubonge’ in 2014. Qn: Did you study production in school or an institution to learn the basic technical aspects? I never studied when i started but loved production as soon as I got an insight then i started attending production related workshops at Selam

AN
Uganda. I also did a lot of extensive research online and involved myself with other producers abroad via the internet where we shared and compared notes. Qn: What does it take to produce a hit song. Please take us through the basics Basically there are no rules but production goes beyond just having good equipment. It is a language which producers have to interpret well. It involves understating the artists. For example at the Elly Wamala Foundation projects i was selected because i understand the weaknesses and strengths of most of the local artists. It also takes a lot of creativity and skill of the producer which comes as a God given (natural) talent. Qn: Do you specialise in a particular style or genre? I do not specialise in any specific style or genre. I respect music as a language and do almost every style. However most of the songs I do tend to go towards a particular style or angle because of artists demands. They come and dictate what style they want and insist on doing a particular style that was inspired by their favourite artist. In the end they are forced to copy other artists. Qn: Which Artists have you worked with and top songs produced? I have worked with 80% of Ugandan artists and many others across the boarders from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan. I have also worked with Jamaican artists like Mr G and Beanie Man. I have done many hit songs with top arts like Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, Juliana Kanyomozi, Iryne Namubiru and new stars like King Saha, Melody and Rema.

Qn: With the number of hit songs you have done surely you must be in demand. So how much do you charge for your work?
STAR PROFILE Chano8 I don’t have a specific amount i charge for my work. It usually depends on the magnitude of assignement, artist i am working with and conditions at the time of work. I even do production for free sometimes as long as i have spotted a raw talent and potential that I think can be nurtured. Qn: How do you rate Ugandan music say compared to other countries in the region and other parts of the world like West Africa and Jamaica? Uganda’s music industry has grown although the issue of quality is still debatable. The problem is that Ugandans don’t have identify or style that make them distinctive from the rest of the world. We need to develop a unique touch that can be easily recognised as Ugandan. The reason why Nigerians or Jamaicans are doing well is because they have a specific style that can easily identify them. They also invest a lot in the music industry in terms of financing, Marketing and professionalising the different aspects of music from writing, production and quality videos. They also promote their own aggressively and are proud of what they do whereas Ugandans rarely appreciate or glorify their own stars. Qn: What challenges do you face or have you faced as a producer? Acceptance and belief by some big name artists which takes time and also the issue of copy cats who want to sound like the successful artists in the process forcing the producer to come up with similar beats and style.
Chano8 STAR PROFILE Many artists in Uganda are also unserious about music with most of them taking it as a form of hobby to pass time. That’s why you see many trial and error attempts as opposed to pursuing it as a professional career yet we the producers are investing a lot in terms of time and acquiring new equipment. Qn: Besides music production, what else do you do? I write songs and do promotions as well as identify new fresh talent. Over the weekend i do farming and I am also a business man.
Busy at work in the studio

Qn: What are the achievements you have registered so far?
Qn: Any message to fans and those who aspire to be producers?
I have finally won acceptance among the top artists and built a network of friends and business partners. I have also managed to put up my own respectable studio (Audio One) which has helped me earn a living and fend for my family.
Talent is born and also nurtured. So those who wish to do music or production shouldn’t shy away but give it a try. Producers and aspiring artists should not fight each other but instead work together and seek help and advice from those who have made it.
I have received many nominations and won awards in Uganda and generally received recognition across East Africa as a top music producer.

"Angela Nabuufu, better known by her stage name ''Ang3lina'' was born Angela Nabuufu Kintu, in North Middlesex London U.K. She is a young female UK-based Ugandan artist who at the age of seven taught herself how to play the piano and other instruments. She further acquired more skills in song writing, Guitar playing and Music Software/Studio production. She is a rising star in the Ugandan music scene ".
Qn: Who is Ang3lina?
Qn: What inspires you?
ANGELA NABUUUFU is a student in the UK studying clinical psychology at University of Birmingham. Comes from a family of 4. Was born and raised in the UK but flies back home very often. I am a Muganda and 20 years old.
God, I just feel he gave me a talent. I have people that I look up to musically. But when it comes to making music, I'm already in the moment (chuckles). I have a day when I'm buzzing with ideas. Then I have days where writing a song is mythical. But in due honesty, God inspires me.
Well. Apart from music I want something to fall back on. I've always been good at science. At College I picked much more interest in Psychology which is a social science. So I decided to take it on at university level.
My grandmother also does inspire me. She's the person who taught me how to speak Luganda and everything I know about my culture. Without her I wouldn't be the person I am today.
You always have to have a plan B if plan A doesn't work out
Qn: Which people have supported your career?
Qn: When did you start pursuing Music? I have always been exposed to music. I remember clearly when I was 7, Dad brought home a keyboard. It was very random because none of my parents play any instruments. I was the only one who took interest in this keyboard. So I started playing about with it and eventually I actually taught myself how to play the piano. So as I grew up I got better and better and eventually started writing songs At first I wasn't into the whole singing thing. Was more of a Song writer / Producer. But then a lot of people around me always told me that I had a nice voice.
Qn: When did you release your first song? Last year in 2013. 'Sigwa Kukoma' was my first ever song that I did.mI currently have three songs namely; 'Sigwa Kukoma', 'Ghetto Lovin' and 'The One'. The 'Njagala Kuzina Nawe' & 'Drive me crazy songs' which I featured on, were like me trying this music thing out to see if people would actually like my voice. So because the feedback was great I tried out my own thing and dropped 'Sigwa Kukoma' then 'Ghetto Lovin' followed.
Chano8. November. 2014
Everyone important in my life like family and friends. My mum is my biggest fan.
Qn: Which musicians do you look up to internationally and locally? Internationally I look up to Alicia keys, I think she's awesome. Then if we are talking old school, I'm all about Toni Braxton. Locally, I have always been a big fan of Iryn Namubiru. She has an amazing voice and almost all her songs are hits!
Qn: What are your future plans musically? I love urban music. So I just hope to continue producing it but mixing it with my culture and my language to make me stand out more. I would love to be an international artist but I have to win the hearts of Ugandans first. So right now I'm just trying to produce more good music, to build my fan base and recognition back home.
Qn: Which musician would you like to work with? In Uganda I would love to work with Radio. I think he has an amazing voice probably one of my Best male vocalist's in the country.

Chano8 RELATIONSHIPS
Her View
Relationship
“I'm in a dilemma really. My
husband of four years suffers from some form of erectile dysfunction. Its taken a toll on our marriage but as if this is not bad enough, he has become insecure and abusive. He thinks am going to cheat on him. The only reason that will make me leave him is his insecurity and a possesiveness. I also miss sex but I don't want to hurt him. Don't know how long I can live like this."
Gloria Batuta
A
m so sorry for what you are going through. Well first and foremost is that, you and your husband need to see a doctor. Erectile Dysfuntion is a serious problem. If your husband is below the age of 40 then the problem is mostly psychological. Meaning the doctor you need to see is a therapist. The insecurity and possessiveness seem like it is his way of trying not to lose you and his ego trying to protect his territory. E.D also complicated sex due to the pressure the guy bears every time he realizes you want to be intimate so here are some tips to ease into love making. 1.Try something new. This will help get his mind off the routine he is dreading and enhance his arousal. Read some erotic material to him, watch something naughty, whatever you decide, just try something out of your comfort zone . 2. Take the pressure off. Now this is a bit uncomfortable for most couples but if you are both open minded about sex then maybe introducing some toys into the bedroom would help take the pressure off. Of course you have to discuss it with your partner before surprising them like that. 3. Be with him for his doctor’s visits, just to show your support then he will know you’re still committed to him and your marriage. He needs a support system so Chano8. November. 2014
Be patient with him. Trust me when I say all a man wants is to satisfy his woman physically and emotionally. So however stressing the situation is for you, I bet it is worse for him so both of you need patience and have fun. that he doesn’t feel like a pariah. 4.Talk about it. Being open about your relationship is good for many things, but mostly it strengthens your bond. When it comes to his complication, talk to him about your feelings, then listen and be empathetic. 5.Be patient with him. Trust me when I say all a man wants is to satisfy his woman physically and emotionally. So however stressing the situation is for you, I bet it is worse for him so both of you need patience and have fun. Go on one or 2 dates do a lot of fun things together and show him he is still the man you fell in love with and married. Am told relationships improve with time at least that is how it is supposed to be. So hang in there. Learn his love language so that you have more ways to make him feel loved, give him a compliment every once in a while, You will most definately see an amazing change in his behavior. No one ever said marriage was going to be easy, it takes work, so get working girlfriend!.
Dilema
His Take
I
t’s quite unfortunate having to experience a marriage devoid of intimacy. This is further complicated by an abusive environment. Erectile dysfunctions are caused by a number of reasons stress and medical factors being one of them. Too much pressure on him to perform could be the other reason. If you put him in a situation of too much pressure then he could resent you for it and that could be the root of why he is behaving the way he is. Sex is a complicated human process which needs to occur with a bit of spontaneity and not had under duress. The problem occurs when the man is pushed, belittled and manipulated into satisfying his woman. You need to have dialogue with your man and find out why he fails to rise to the occasion. Talk to him in a free and comfortable way that will encourage him to be candid with you. Tell him that you want to work through this with him so that your marriage can survive. You may also want to tell him that you do not want to leave him and that you’re simply looking out for him. If he tells you that you put him under a lot of pressure to perform then it would be good to apologize to him for that. Also act the fool and find out why he acts insecure and abusive towards you. There is a tremendous healing effect that talking about a problem brings. Do not negate the importance of dialogue. This should be the start of your journey to solving this problem. If he does not want to talk about the situation then you need to up your convincing game. Find a way of bringing up the subject in a non-threatening way that will obligate him to talk. If he refuses all you attempts to talk about problem then you prolly have reached the end of your rope. It’s upon your judgment to speak with a concerned party about your problems. His brother would be a good example provided you are sure he wont feel threatened and belittled. If all fails to work then you may have no choice but to see what happens. If the abuse continues and your life is in danger then it would be sensible to run for your life. No one is as dangerous as a man scorned. You can seek refuge at your parents of and wait for him to show up and beg for you to return home with him. This will inadvertently present an opportunity for you to address the situation. But you need to be clever about it. Do not involve your parents in this issue and first engage him in a one-on-one. Since he Is afraid that you might leave him then then could be the most workable option you have. Under no circumstances should you leave your
Mark Kawalya If he does not want to talk about the situation then you need to up your convincing game. Find a way of bringing up the subject in a nonthreatening way that will obligate him to talk. parent’s home and go back home with him without solving the issue. Like most men, he may be extremely convincing and use a smooth tongue to get you going back home with him. Do not fall for it if you want to get to the bottom of this issue. You will only be acting a fool on your own terms. If he doesn’t come to seek you from your folks place then it apparent that your husband does not care about you and refuses to work on your problems. This problem would not be so bad if he wasn’t abusing you but since he is then this marriage is not worth it. If working this marriage out has totally failed then you have no choice but to put it on hold for your safety’s sake until something happens. You should also seek spiritual help to comfort you in these trying times. Talk to your spiritual leader and find solace in his counsel.

Atafo Atafo
Meet Makeup Artist
“Atafo is a make up Artist in Uganda, He has been nomianted for several fashion related awards including Abryanz Fashion Awards. His skills have been appreciated by many in the entertainment industry. We caught up with him to find out about his secret to being one of the best.
Qn: When did you start your career in fashion? Did you study it?
working with someone to determine their end look?
I believe it’s both. I knew I loved art from the age of six, my models were my family, I can never thank my mum enough. She was always ready to be my unpaid model whenever I wanted to do makeup or paint. It’s on her that I practiced all the time. Later when I grew up I definitely had to develop my God given talent and that’s why I no longer have to introduce myself anymore. And yes i started as a child(Laughs)
I always look at everything and love to try doing new things. It’s like inventing a recipe, when it's successful, you are happy. I am very experimental, but I must say there are failures too sometimes. That’s how I learn and improve. But i try to modify the look as I go.
Qn: Have you worked on any music videos if so which ones and which artists? Fortunately for me, I am a natural born artist and perfectionist, but that said, I do not sit on my laurels. I have worked with artists like Lillian Mbabazi, Judith Heard, Hellen Lukoma, Brenda Nambi, Crystal Newman, Suzan Nava, Flavia Tumisiime and so many more.
Qn: What is the average you charge for make up? My prices vary, I have packages that go for different prices i.e. Casual, bridal and editorial. I do not have fixed prices, but I rather draw the price according to what you want, because with makeup, you can never be sure.
Qn:.What is your general take on makeup as a part of the fashion industry? It is growing, it wasn’t recognized as essential before but now we are. We help women look good. Now we are being recognized for awards in the fashion industry such as The ABRAYNZ FASHION AND STYLE AWARDS.
Qn: Do you work as a team or you are a single individual in your team? No, I do not have a team, I work alone.
Qn: If anyone was interested in a makeover where would they be able to find you? Am mobile I move with my equipment and most of my clients call me on my number.
Qn: Any big projects you have worked on?
Qn: What line of products do you prefer to use?
Oh yeah, I've had some big projects, and my work speaks for itself now. If you saw MAFIKIZOLO in Uganda, I did their make-up. So you get the picture. I enjoyed it all.
I do not have a specific product, like i said its like creating a recipe mixing this and the other and see what comes out,so i collect different brands.
Qn:Your work with eyebrows is the talk of the town tell us about it?
Qn:Please share with our readers a makeup tip?
About my eyebrows, that’s my little secret, but yeah the love of art drives me to create such great pieces. Be nice to me, I will show you.

Tell us about yourself? I am Barbra Mayanja, I have loved fashion and have been in the fashion industry since 2009. I started off at Grand Imperial with a small space selling women's shoes and bags. I pride my self with stocking the latest fashion accessories in town. My most recent experience has been opening a new store at Garden City basement - DDIBA STORE. One reason I particularly enjoy this business, and the challenges that go along with it, is the opportunity to connect with people through my sense of style.
How did you get into fashion? I have been interested in fashion since I was a little kid. I have always been attracted to high-concept, unusual clothing and a good pair of leather shoes. When I moved to London, I knew I'd be able to fulfil the dream to trade in fashion. My mother has been a great inspiration and mentor in my life and she too loves fashion, you can say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. When asked, as a kid, I would tell peoChano8. ple I wanted to be a designer when I grew up. I never got to go to design school, however, as I got talked out of my dream, and therefore I am now the posessor of a BA in Business Management and an MBA.
What inspires you? Fashion is fickle, I am inspired by the leathers and textures of different animal skins, Buffalo leather and Ox Blood being the latest on vogue.
Tell us about where you shop and the brands you are interested in? I shop around London for Perfumes, leather shoes and office apparel, Italy and Paris for pure leather bags, belts and wallets and USA for makeup and body mists from Macy's.
What are the price ranges. Prices are unbelievably competitive for the quality and brands I sell. People need to come and compare prices. Shoes range from 150,000 shs to 700,000. Leather Handbags range from 200,000 to 1,000,000. Designer bags vary.
Tell us about your store, when it started and the fashion changes it has undergone i.e trends and merchandise? I sold my old business at Grand Imperial and started a new Store in March 2014 - DDIBA STORE (Ddiba means leather)

#5 Nkoleki MELODY FT JOSE CHAMELEONE Melody has a sweet voice that perfectly matches the choice of stage name. The concept in the song and music video is perfeclty executed. Its about a young man trying hard to impress a difficult date who prefers the finer items life can offer. Jose Chameleone brings in all his experience to balance the flow.
#6 Deep In Love REMA NAMAKULA Rema’s rise to the top has been well documented in the media. We cant say more as the diva is clearly on a steady troll up the ladder. She does it again here in her characteristic love theme and gentle sweetness in the video we are accostomed to.The song is already a big hit in the region
#7 Sitya loss EDDIE KENZO Where as some big names have been fighting with local DJs over air space,Eddie Kenzo was busy working his way up the charts in the international scene with his creation. BEST OF THE MONTH Chano8
We present the hottest songs and artists that dominated Ugandan air waves in the month
#8 Mulirwana KING SAHA king Saha, mentored by Chameleone, has taken Uganda by storm. The song is about a guy that’s fallen for his neighbour and stalks her throughout the video. It’s one of those catchy tunes that Ugandan’s all over won’t stop singing. King Saha's recent concert in Kampala sold out.
#9 Mulamwa ALLAN TONIKS Toniks had earlier told us in an exclusive interview that before the release of Mulamwa music video tha, his music genre is ‘foot music with influences of RnB’. So when this song hit the radio stations, night clubs and then the screens like wild fire, we understood where he was heading - to the top!
#10 Ntunga RADIO & WEASEL Radia and Weasel have done it again with Ntunga. It’s a love song where one lover asks the other to put them back together hence the ‘Ntunga’ which means “sew me”. It’s a great song to chill back to and great coloring too in the video.

azz Ville Bar and Restaurant located at Bandali Rise in Bugolobi is home to one of Kampala’s best and most followed bands - Code 9. Friday Night Live is the theme night no one wants to missout that is if you are a fan of live band music. It gets crazy and fully packed every Friday as Code 9 takes centre stage. The Band headed by Jazz Ville proprietor Chris Ireland, is a 14-Piece Band which was formed in 2009. The name Code 9 was derived from the fact that it initially had 9 members on the team. According to the Manager of Jazz Ville, the band after its formation, dedicated a full year just for practice in which over 40 cover pieces across the world were worked on. “We have a team of talented and dedicated musicians and instrumentalists but we wanted to get everything right as our aim is to make the band the best live band in East Africa” Mr

Impairwe Godfrey the Manager of Jazz Ville explained. The band which initially started performances at Boda Boda on Roof top Garden city then went to Cayenne and Sheraton before settling at their current home in Jazz Ville Bugolobi a unique home in a way. The recently re-opened Jazz Ville had closed down for some time for renovations to meet standards set by Kampala Capital City Authority for Bands and hangouts near residential areas. The place now fully fixed with sound prove and an expansive seating area is exquisitely decorated with wall paintings of musical instruments such as the guitar and keyboard. The place also has wall hangings and paintings of some of Uganda’s greatest musicians like Philly Bongole Lutaya, Isaiah Katumwa, Jose Chameleone and Moses Matovu.
Today, the band which boasts of Five vocalists, has climbed ladders so fast that, every Friday a dedicated fan base turns up for their live performances and easily part with an entry fee of 20,000/= to be part of the party. Over the years, the band also prides itself for producing some of the best artistes in Uganda by identifying and nurturing fresh talent some of whom have become a big force to reckon with in the entertainment industry. A long list which includes the likes of Brian Mugenyi, Pragmo, Michael Kitanda Amanda, and Irene Ntale among others, have all gone through Code 9 where they have learnt instruments and vocal tuning. “We perform any style and Genre in this world and basically for any audience. Chano8 MUISIC VIDEO
WALE WALE Jose Chameleone
W
ale Wale whose audio was done by producer Kays, is a composition which embellishes a combination of African beats and Rhythm complete with a prayer. The catchy afro-beats are definitely inspired by Orchestra Super Mazembe’s Monster hit ‘Kassongo' done in the late 70's. In the prayer, Chameleone is seeking divine inspiration and advice as he asks for good health, food and education for his children. He sings in a mixture of English, Kiswahili and Luganda. The music video done by the brilliant Sasha Vybz is simply breath taking. He has an eye for unique angles and uses colour perfectly to blend into the natural environment of the scenes he selects. We know that he is always fully in charge of his productions although rumour has it that, the delay in releasing the official video was caused by Chameleone himself intervening after some parts of the video were not edited to his satisfaction. Morotto is a beautiful place and so are the people who Chameleone says welcomed them warmly into their villages for the shoot. Sasha Vybz uses his skill in incorporating different camera angles and variety of shots to explore the beautiful scenery of the mountains, vegetation and homesteads. The dance and costume of the Karamojong natives fits perfectly in the overall composition that also includes professional dancers doing traditional dance in the background. The issue of music videos meeting international standards has been big and the debate is raging on. However one thing is clear Chameleone now wants his songs as well as music videos to meet those international standards. With the attention the video has received across Africa, it seems ‘Wale Wale’ video meets those standards as it is trending on international channels like Channel O and Trace TV. Overall the song is very good with catchy beats and a sleezy improved video that too matches our expectation.

Enjoy Life
Movie Review
Lucy is a French science fiction action film written and directed by Luc Besson and produced by his wife Virginie Silla for his company Europacorp.

LUCY
L
ucy' is 100% sci fi. It stars Scarlet Johanson as 'Lucy' a girl who was captured to be used as a drug mule. During transportation, she is assaulted hence ingesting a huge dose of the drug that gives her access to 100% use of her brain. She turns on her captors and starts her journey to retrieve all the drugs and punish all those responsible while trying to figure out what is happening to her with the help of Dr Norman. Well, there are a lot of super powers involved the there is Morgan Freeman who is a professor with the same theory who later becomes Lucy's protĂŠgĂŠe and friend whom Lucy entrusts with the future of evolution. If you're looking for Bad language, sex, rock and roll nudity then this is not the movie for you. But if you're a geek or into smart science stuff, then you will enjoy this. Honestly, I don't believe there is a movie Scarlet couldn't make perfect. It is a great story of how we can evolve and build our brain capacity.

SONG REVIEW Chano8
Song Review
Champion
Jackie and Shaa in Coke Studio
“Jackie Chandiru is a Ugandan artist who hails from Arua in North Western Uganda (West Nile). She made her music breakthrough after emerging as one of the best participants in a music competition dubbed Coca Cola Pop stars. As a result, they formed a girl group called the Blu 3 alongside other winners Lillian Mbabazi and Cinderella Sanyu before the group disintegrated. She was then forced to go solo after they failed to resolve a disagreement in the group. "
H
er career has since gone a notch higher after the release of her first major hit song 'Agaasi'. She has since never looked back and as they say, the rest is history. After successful RnB, Pop and Afro soul projects which saw her do songs like ‘Gold digger’ 'Nafunye' and ‘Don’t call his number’ she is at it again this time with ‘Champion’ Champion is Jackie Jandiru’s message to her haters that she cannot easily be brought down because her resolve is strong with a will power and determination to succeed very formidable.
Chano8. November. 2014
She recently went through a series of personal challenges in life including heart breaks in her relationship with City Lawyer Caleb Alaka and also health complications involving her heart that required an expensive surgery abroad. She however comes back strongly with this new hit to assure her fans that she is a natural winner and a champion. The beats are groovy RnB almost tending towards classic rock and its baseline gives it the old school ‘disco feel’ and makes it comfy for those who just prefer to listen and pick the strong message from a powerful voice with a variety in vocal ranges.
She sings in a combinaton of English, Luganda and her local dialect Lugbara ti. Jackie Chandiru and Shaa recently had an electrifying performance on Coke Studio of the song which also got nominated in the Best Female Artiste Eastern Africa category at AFRIMA awards. Her performance was well received by fans across Africa. Shaa from Tanzania was also discovered by Coca Cola in the Popstar competition. Hopefully 'Champion' will make Jackie a champion soon.

Gossip Reloaded Justine Nameere Quits MiniBuzz Wanted Over Debt However, she has a message for her fans and the general public giving her side of the story;
Justine Nameere
F
ormer NTV Life Stories program host Justine Nameere has quit her position as co-host of the MiniBuzz program on Bukedde TV owned by the Vision group citing a busy academic schedule. MiniBuzz is a local TV program which gives the public an opportunity to air our their views on topical issues. The production is usually done in a Taxi that acts as a parliament of sorts. She was co-hosting with popular city comedian Zizinga.Nameere who made a name for hosting the Life stories program on NTV, is also popular with
fans for her curvy body and pretty looks and is well appreciated by the public for her smooth way of talking. She resigned from Bukedde’s BiniBuzz because she is entering a busy period in her academic life where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Makerere University. She was rumoured to be ‘squeezed out’ from the program by management and also resigned from NTV under similar unclear circumstances although eventually she gave the same ‘busy schedule’ excuse for her resignation.
“My dear viewers it was such a hard decision to resign from the Minibuzz Program, besides the amazing crew mates, understanding management, Zizinga’s fun, I’ll greatly miss the passengers and the debates. Am finalizing my legal studies, got six months left and I need concentration like never before. Unfortunately that makes it impossible for me to host a daily TV show especially one that involves traveling quite a lot. However I will host a weekly program on Bukedde TV 1 soon. During this final stage of Law school, I can ably balance books and a weekly program but not a daily one. Thanks for all the love, time and support. The Minibuzz management, thanks for the opportunity and all I was able to learn as I cohosted the “People’s Parliament”. Ill forever be grateful. Guys look out for the new co-host and Zizinga as they roll on Minibuzz Kyogereko, starting Monday 3rd November 2014. God bless y’all. Many hugs!” We at Chano8 wish Justine all the best in her endeavors.
