Big Caravans from different companies formed the mid morning parade as colourful processions moved through the city with beautiful girls wiggling along from Watoto Church near Bombo Road to Jinja Road roundabout. The city was a sea of fanfare as vehicles and the menacing boda bodas were locked out to let the city dwellers enjoy the day’s activities. As anticipated, It was a colourful event, just in sync with this year’s theme - colour that brings out the city’s vibrancy, sense of style and beauty.

Chano8 DINNER WITH THE PRESIDENT
ARTISTES TUBONGA NAWE WITH PRESIDENT MUSEVENI For the first time ever, the entire entertainment industry converged at Speke resort Munyonyo for the ‘Tubonge Nawe’ campaign at a special dinner organised by the artistes themselves.
A
part from a few artistes who missed, most entertainers pledged their support to president Museveni in the two-hour event that kick-started at 4pm. All clad in yellow outfits which is the official color for National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party, artistes started arriving at the venue before the president who was also the chief guest. He arrived with the first lady and Minister for Karamoja affairs Mrs. Janet Museveni, a few minutes past 9pm and they took thier seats next to Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone and Juliana. The president thanked the artistes for their support before launching ‘Tubonge Nawe’ song which features 12 top artistes including Mun G, Harunah Mubiru, Bebe Cool, Juliana, Rema, King Sahara, Chameleon, Irene Namubiru among others. The President pledged 400million

Chameleone promised to rally all artistes to support Museveni in his presidential bid while Gagamel boss Bebe Cool said he will ‘crush anyone’ who stands in the president’s way. However, some artistes were not happy like former Amarula comedian Messe and arts leader Aloysious Matovu Joy who were disappointed

with the artistes. “All the musicians who went on the podium to speak will die very poor people. Instead of asking the president to enforce the copyright law, they are busy celebrating 400million shillings which will not help them in anyway,“ Messe said. Juliana showed why she’s one of the best vocally talented artistes in Uganda when she perfectly sang both the East African and Ugandan anthems to the excitement of her colleagues. Those who attended the event included comedians like Bujju, Ann Kansiime, Salvado, musicians Golden band production, Some Afrigo Band memebrs, Da New Eagles, Goodlyfe crew of Radio and Weasel, fashion designers like Sylvia Owori, Santa Anzo, film actors and producers among others. The dinner how ever has since turned controversial with a public outcry targeting some of the top artistes like Juliana Kanyomozi, Jose Chameleone and Bebe Cool for openly supporting the NRM and defending the move on social media.

Chano8 ASK RWAMITI
CAN UGANDAN ARTIST
Q& A
Miles Rwamiti is a presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer. It is ok for the artistes to work for the president, record songs and make some money. That is understandable because they need to survive, but they should use such opportunities to present the issues at hand even more. I really doubt whether the artistes add any value to the president and elections because I know most of them first of all don’t vote.
Ask Rwamiti
T
his goes either way. For me, I think this issue of meeting or dining with the president is a short time vision and it doesn’t help in solving the issues of the artistes and the country.
There are so many things the artistes could have told the president at that dinner and told him what issues are at hand that need urgent attention. When you have this kind of opportunity, you have to take advantage and present to the president the challenges entirely facing the music industry in general. You tell the present that, there are so many issues hurting Ugandans that have not been handled well because of negligence of some leaders. Things like health which needs urgent attention for people who cannot afford basic needs of survival, so when you choose an artiste to represent others or have an opportunity to talk to the president, they should be able to present such issues that affect people and show him where our concerns are.
74
Chano8. October 2015
For me I think it was not called for or not necessary at this time because even the public is not happy with them and have given them a backlash because they feel betrayed by their stars. A big number of their fans may probably not even support the NRM and Museveni. So it would make more sense if they had a dialogue on issues as opposed to just entertaining the president. So instead of kneeling in front of the president and telling him useless things, it’s better to bring to his
The musicians perform for the people and fans. If the people for example in Juliana’s case say they have supported her throughout these years through thick and thin and then she says she has a right to choose which person to support, the fans are disappointed and feel betrayed.

THE BIG Q
Should politics and our celebrities mix?
When Oprah Winfrey endorsed Obama in 2008, she was widely criticized, particularly by her Republican fans. Oprah helped launch the career of then Democratic candidate Barack Obama by lending the largely unknown Illinois senator muchneeded credibility in his race against Hillary Clinton.
O
prah was probably too rich and powerful to be hurt by negative publicity; her empire grew regardless of the public resentment. Enter Juliana Kanyomozi. She and other Ugandan musicians, Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone, Radio, and Weasel among others are under social media attack for making political proclamations in the Tubonga Nawe song that extols President Museveni ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.

He insists he missed nothing at the dinner. “Let no one confuse you that it is a question of democracy. These are simply greedy and it raises many moral questions. As far as we are concerned, we have a moral betrayal by these artistes and it stinks! These artistes sacrificed the common good for candy at the expense of healthcare, education and starving people. Do they know what shs400m can do for the people of Karamoja?” an avid social critic, Jacob
Odongo queried. Jose Chameleone in trying to calm the onslaught had some insightful rebuttal. “It is your own Sorrow, Struggle and success!!!! Let everybody respect everybody’s opinion. We all have different missions and dreams… You want us to sing on your Graduations, Birthdays, and Weddings and defy the fact that PRESIDENT MUSEVENI is entitled to the same??? Wake up people. We are respectful to Elders and are entitled to dine with a Father,” Chameleone implored. Juliana was coy. “We are human be-

According to Okello, artistes are creative minded people who can profit from their talents without necessarily having affiliations. “We should understand that musicians can work with politicians on fairly and strictly business relations with no strings attached whatsoever. As long as it doesn’t taint their image or affect their career paths, there is no problem whatsoever,” he further stresses. However John Chihi, the director of Mediage PR EA Limited, a public relations and image rights company, says that by coming out as politically partisan, the accused musicians are likely to create conflict with their fans. He argues that generally, fans feel a strong sense of connection to the celebrities they admire. They feel a sense of relationship and identification with them. If a celebrity does something that goes against what the fan believes in, it
79
Chano8. October 2015
creates conflict for the fan or something else. "People look up to these celebrities and when a celebrity endorses a candidate that the fan does not favor, it may reduce the negative feeling the fan has towards that candidate, so in that sense celebrity endorsements can be effective, but it is likely to be balanced out by the fan feeling less positive towards the celebrity. But I don't think the public minds if celebrities endorse candidates they themselves favour,” he explains. He says that celebrities, with their unique ability to connect with people, are arguably the most influential voices. They are the glam and glitter of political campaigns. They bring star power to otherwise mundane events. He warns that for as long as the ce-
lebrities show up, it is okay. However, some do something more than endorsing, like speaking out. Since most aren’t eloquent on some political issues, they have instead damaged the reputation of their political candidates of choice. “I think most people accept them in that endorsement role. But when celebrities speak off the cuff, some sound simplistic or patronizing. Many musicians in Uganda aren’t politically aware. They could make stupid statements that can harm the candidates,” he argues. According to Chihi, whereas celebrities shouldn’t be prevented from announcing their support for a political party or candidate in an election, they should not be so open. “It pays when one is vague. It doesn’t pay to be a fanatic. You lose somehow,” He concludes.

Radio&Weasel STAR TALK
PROBABLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DUET IN EAST AFRICA IN THEIR GENERATION
When you think successful duos in East Africa you immediately think of the dynamic Goodlyfe duo Radio and Weasel who are currently the most successful duo in Uganda with multiple awards and a BET nomination under their belt. Chano8 was lucky to be able to talk to them about how they do it for all these years. Chano8: How long has Radio and Weasel been a duo? It has been 8 years since we started this musical journey. Wow it seems like a long time now. Chano8: When you started out did you think you would be this big as stars? Tell us about your musical journey? No, when we started out we had no clue we would be this big. We had an idea we tried it out and when it worked we went along with it. Honestly none of us knew it would be this big or even have such a massive reception from our fans. Its is always amazing to see how far we have come. Chano8: A lot of groups and duos come and go, what makes radio and weasel work as a duo? Yes duos come up and disappear, a lot contributes to that but mostly I believe it is communication. Radio and I do everything as brothers. We talk about everything. I wouldn’t do anything without letting him know and the same applies to him. We are always on the same page and we agree a lot on most things. It also takes persistence and being consistent with your music. Chano8: Is the music process for a duo the same as that of a solo artist. Take us through the process of making a song? As the saying goes two heads are better than one. As a duo there is a lot of collaboration. Where a solo artist goes through the process of writing and creating
82

a song alone, a duo u will find writing a song is shared between both of us hence being easier. Then there is a bit of diversity where 2 people bring 2 different flavors to the a song which enable all kinds of music lovers to appreciate the song. The process is a bit longer because there are a lot of ideas going around but you can be sure the results are good. Chano8: In all the songs you have done which is your personal favorite? That is easy, our favorite song is ‘Ngenda Mumaso’ I believe it is special to our fans too for the same reason it is to us. It is our motivational song. It is a reminder to keep going forward and appreciate our journey to where we are. It reminds us to keep working harder because there is a lot to do. Chano8: What do you think leads to the downfall of most musical groups in the industry? Most groups have a lot of internal miscommunication which is a big problem today. It also requires persistence and consistence like I had said earlier. You have to do your research to see what works for your song but you also have to keep releasing music when you take your time someone will take your place. It's a war out here.

of artists to make them a song, there is nothing wrong with that.
Now when it comes to that song, it is about each and everyone’s right to vote. To vote for which ever candidate they prefer. As Ugandans we vote too and we have a similar choice as most Ugandans so I don’t see why it is an issue, people should just vote for whoever they wish.
Chano8: What is your view on how to pick a music partner is it like a marriage?
The way I see it NRM commissioned artists to do a song and they did it, they got paid and their families where happy. As an artist it is my job to sing. So another party like FDC can also pay another group

Chano8: After the BET nomination you have become a power to reckon with, what in your opinion does it take to have a hit song? Any artist who has ever made a hit will tell you there is always pressure to follow in the previous footsteps so yes there is pressure to get an award for such esteem and that is why we keep working hard, there is a lot to conqour. Chano8: What should your fans expect at the highly anticipated upcoming “Juicy Juicy” CONCERT? Our fans should be sure not to miss it, it will be at freedom city on the 1st of November. Even those that aren’t fans or supporters, you should come we will change your mind .It is going to be the biggest show this year so no one should miss it. We are already preparing a lot of amazing sets for our fans, we have new songs to perform too and we can’t wait i to see them there. Chano8: Currently how many endorsements do you have? Here we need a list because we are all booked up until next year, we have shows all over the country, upcountry and within the city. For an artist the festive season is the busiest. Chano8: What should your fans expect from Radio and Weasel 2016? We expect a lot from ourselves and our fans should expect the same too. I can say it’s going to be fire, we have a 16 track album done so all the other artists should watch out it will be fire!!. COLLA HERE TODAY,GO Why Music groups are finding it hard to stick together. In 2004, the Blu*3 trio of Jackie Chandiru, Cindy Sanyu and Lillian Mbabazi hit the music scene on a mountain of hype. The Grammywinning R&B trio of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams called time on the group after releasing 4 albums in 4 years. It was a total split and Beyoncé admitted there was no time or point regrouping. "You know how the Beatles broke off, they all did their solo projects and they came back together and they were even stronger. It will not happen with us. Otubatisa is that song which has been on the lips of very many people lately especially after the release of it's official video. It features Team no sleep’s 'bad girl' Sheebah Karuni alongside ‘Swangz Avenue’s ‘good girl’ Irene Ntale. At first, the two names sound incompatible especially when used in the same sentence but then wait a minute...
The song is about a Casanova or player who juggles the two girls and others as they seek his attention for love. Lets find out what they had to say about the songs journey
Qn: How was the idea of “Tubatisa’ conceived?
pening maybe later when we were shooting the video.
Otubatisa was an idea conceived by our managers, I mean Julius of Swangz Avenue and Jeff Kiwa who is Sheeba’s manager, they thought it would be nice to do a song together. I believe Julius had the tittle even before the lyrics were written.
Qn: Where was it produced and who produced it?
Qn: Who wrote the intriguing lyrics?
The video was done by, Swangz Visual and it was directed by Musoke Marvin. I bet you didn’t know that Swangz Avenue now does videos hehe.
The lyrics were written by Ray Signature Kasenyanku the lyrical master, hehe. He is really good. Qn: Whose idea was it to team up with Sheeba? The management on both sides thought it was a great idea to collaborate and when they informed us we were on board too. Qn: What are the most memorable moments in studio while recording it? Actually thing is we were never in studio together. I remember I was the first to voice my part and Sheeba came in after a week to do her part. So there wasn’t much hap-

Qn: Was it inspired by Rihanna and Shakira’s’ can’t remember to forget u’? No not really, I would say it was more inspired by doing something else other than girls fighting for a guy, this time you have the girls ganging up against this man who is a serial player. Qn: Where was the video shot? It was shot at Grips and Sparks in Bugolobi, I think Industrial Street. The whole video was shot in one location we just set up a lot of scenes that came up really well.

Sandra
TETA
Sandra Teta is a 23 year old Rwandese beautiful lady who is on the fast road to success. She has accomplished more than your average corporate girl and has quickly become an icon for many girls in Rwanda and East Africa. Sandra has made a name for her self in Rwanda as an event hostess with the most to offer. She is the true example of determination and passion in your career world can get you far. We met up with her to share her story as an entrepreneur. BACKGROUND Her upbringing was humble. She was born in Uganda but her family later returned to their home country Rwanda, where she pursued her academics. She went to Kigali Parents School for primary school education and O’ levels at Fawe Girl’s School. She did A’ level education at Lycee de Kigali and is currently pursuing her Law degree at University of Kigali. That is not all she is upto. She was a beauty queen earlier on in 2011 in the SFB beauty pageant. She says it was a prank by a friend who signed her up for the contest without her consent after she had remarked about being taller than the contestants. She didn’t shy away from the challenge when it came and she still is grateful for that experience. She believes it is responsible for her confidence and ability to take critism, not forgeting her need to be the best always. CONTINUED the genesis of many to come. Being the youngest events planner in Kigali there was no doubt why she was given the resposiblity to take over the Rwanda International Fashion Week. This event was an all round fashion event that required her to use all her skills and experience as a beauty queen to pull off. The event had guests such as Zari, Bebecool, Judith Heard and all the great designers from all over Africa. A lot of fashion collectors and admirers showed up and noticed what a great job she had done. It was then her dream grew bigger. She decided she would expand out of Rwanda. RED AVENUE PARTY A few friends told her about the fashion stylist in Uganda named Abryanz and they both came up with the Red Avenue party that was recently concluded successfully in Uganda. When asked why she chose the colour Red for her signature parties she say” red is a colour of love. Love being the reason we do everything, we dress u p for love, we go out coz we love to have fun and the music. It’s a rich coulor and I absolutely love what I do’ now she juggles her time between Uganda and Rwanda. You would expect that that is enough for this young lady but NO she also spends time traveling and debating all over the world in the Rwanda National Entrepreneurs Debate championship which she founded. Honestly we had to find out where she gets the time? Does she have a personal life? She laughed off our concern saying it’s all easy when you’re enjoying it.

She is a perfectionist and doesn’t let go of an idea until its perfect. She rarely isn’t working, so she has learn to adjust. She is in a relationship with a gentleman who is in the music industry. When we asked if he doesn’t mind her work schedule she said” he is equally busy and driven. So we understand that our careers are important to us” but they are always on the phone, if not with him then she is reassuring her mother that all is well. FUTURE PLANS When asked where she sees herself in the next 5 years, she is quick to tell us she hopes to have events in about 9 countries. She is not planning to slow down anytime soon but rather keep pushing boundaries. She says she has been blessed to learn from the older members of her industry and she also has enough to bring to the table despite her age. She pointed out that she is usually undermined by her colleagues and potential clients until they listen to her presentation and they are left amazed. She narrates a story where she was to pitch an idea and everyone expected her to crush and burn because she was inexperienced by the time she was done one of the older ladies who was there to also pitch for the same job gave her a business card and offered her a very lucrative job with unbelievable perks. She turned it down but maintained the friendship because she had to stay true to her dream. Currently she is working on her annual red Avenue parties both in Rwanda and Uganda not to mention keeping up with her school load. This lady is not walking to success but running. We are truly inspired by her journey.

Her View
Relationship
I have been working for a certain company for over four years and I have been in the same position for all this time. One of my female colleagues has exchanged sexual favors with our boss and she was promoted two months ago.
I have been resisting advances from this man for about two years and I’m afraid that could be the reason why my career has stagnated. I am a single mum and I need my career to move forward. I’m not proud of saying this but I’m considering giving in to him and hopefully I will be given my much deserved promotion.
Glorya Batuta
H
onestly any woman can sympathize with your plight. Anyone who sneers at your predicament or event acts like its unthinkable or unheard of is lying. Many women trying to forge a career and provide for their families have reached this snag in their journey. Even the ladies who chose to not go down this road you will find whisper behind their backs saying that it was the only way they could have made it to the top. For example are you sure your colleague exchanged sexual favors for the promotion do you have proof of this? Or was this another story concocted by a jealous rival and maybe her work was impressive and her promotion was a result of her performance at the work place. This is the bitter truth. Ok, back to the issue at hand. You have to realize that sleeping with your boss does not guarantee you a promotion let alone job security. Remember that you will not be an asset because your sleeping with the boss but rather a liability that open him and his company up to law suits. For him it makes much better sense to get rid of you as soon as he is done with you so that you don’t come up with the idea to sue him for millions and cost him his family too. No matter how good the sex is you are a huge risk for him to keep around so why jeopardize your own job like that. There comes a time in everyone’s career when your
Chano8. October 2015
stagnant and you start analyzing why you are not moving up the ladder. Unfortunately for women our minds run to that option but you have to ask yourself being the one person your colleagues don’t respect because they all know how you got where are? Or the one everyone is whispering about and regarded to as the office slut. Is it worth it? Ask yourself after this promotion, what will it take to get the next one, will he now want a kidney transplant? Is this who I want to be known and what about my respect and dignity? These days single mothers run to throw around the title ‘single mother’ so as to explain their desperation and seek for pity. Now why not use it as a show of strength and character? No one will applaud a single mother sleeping with her boss for a promotion but they will praise the single mother that persevered throughout tough times and found a way to make it work. Think of the example you are setting for the child. Look at the big picture and see that this one way of getting ahead could cost you more than you bargained for. Doing the right thing is never easy but it does feel good and satisfying knowing you made it because of your hard work. If your work is not being appreciated and there is no room for you at the top then it is time you look elsewhere. Quietly apply for jobs elsewhere and am sure if you deserve that promotion as you say, someone will be willing to make you a better offer at another company. Being a single mother and a career woman is hard and soooo… exhausting and sadly most of the time you don’t have enough time with your children or even make enough money. I suggest you look into a side business that requires minimal supervision. These days farming is the in thing. If you can raise enough capital start a business venture that you are passionate about. Be your own boss. No one will frown about that but rather be amazed by you dedication and ambition. The best part is you keep your respect dignity and admiration of your children and peers.

His Take
n old adage goes like all that glitters is not gold. Firstly my heart goes out to you due to the career dilemma that you seem to be in. After putting four years into that company a promotion would be a good reward for you. But you need to ask yourself why you have not been promoted on a broader scale. There could be more reasons as opposed to simply citing resisting your boss advances as the only possible cause of your pickle. You could ask yourself the following questions to help you better understand your situation. Have you been performing beyond expectations at work to merit your promotion? I ask this because many employees aspire towards getting promoted yet their performance record falls below company expectations. The second question would be… Do you posses the associated skills required for that position that you aspire to be promoted to? A lot of employees when they get jobs become comfortable and do not go back to school to add onto their skill base. You do not have to go back to school to get a masters degree. I’m talking about small courses that can prove valuable like book keeping, project management etcetera. If you lack the associated skills for that new position then the truth is that you will be passed up for that promotion. Our minds as humans tend to automatically think of the worst in every scenario without giving logical thought processes a chance. If you answered these two questions affirmatively then we can move on to the possibility of being passed over for the promotion because of resisting the boss advances. Sadly there may not be too much you can do with this scenario without concrete evidence. I wouldn’t advise you to get involved with your boss simply to garner a promotion. That is not the path that successful careers are built out of. I would rather you explored other options like looking for another job elsewhere where you can be better compensated and probably with better benefits. With your experience it is not impossible to get an offer, which is two fold, your current salary if you market yourself well.
Mark Kawalya I wouldn’t advise you to get involved with your boss simply to garner a promotion. That is not the path that successful careers are built out of. I would rather you explored other options like looking for another job elsewhere where you can be better compensated and probably with better benefits. If you choose to give into your boss then let me make it clear that you are not guaranteed of automatically getting that promotion when he is through with you. Since he is already fooling around with other employees then you cannot come from a perspective of trust towards his anticipated response action. If he gave you a promotion under such terms then you need to tread carefully. Are you prepared to continue giving yourself to him to sustain that promotion? Because trust me. This will not be a one-time engagement. He will expect you to be on his beck on and call whenever he carnal desires need to be satisfied. May 2014

Are You
JOGGING ?
Reignite your life through jogging
MARK KAWALYA Modern day living requires a body that is in good shape to be able to withstand the heavy stresses and rigorous demands that come with contemporary living.
M
any exercises and fitness regimes have come and others have gone. Jogging has stood the test of time and if incorporated into your routine can provide you with exercise benefits that are almost unmatched. Many corporates in Kampala have taken to jogging and you will meet them in packs pounding the pavements in Kololo and other parts of the city. You too with some workmates can start a jogging troupe of your own. The good news is that jogging requires no financial input on your part apart from your workout kit and that could be why the exercise is the workout of choice for millions of people around the world. Jogging is depression’s best antidote Are you depressed and feel uncertain about tomorrow. Vigorous
exercises such as jogging spur the body to release 'feel good' hormones called endorphins, which boost your mood putting things like depression at bay. Robert Mulindwa a counseling psychologist in private practice says that he recommends jogging to all his patients that struggle with depression. Many of them who take the advice call back and excitedly tell him about how better their mood has improved. Jogging fights Diabetes Jogging is beneficial to diabetes patients and plays a crucial role in controlling the condition. Not only this but the exercise also keeps your body systems healthy and functioning well preventing the onset of diabetes. A sedentary lifestyle and being overweight has been shown to directly increase your risk of developing Diabetes. Adopting jogging and a healthy lifestyle can prevent you from acquiring this debilitating condition. Jogging also has other beneficial

effects besides physical well being. It also promotes our mental and psychological conditions. Jogging is a deterrent of some cancers Researchers strongly agree that jogging is helpful in the prevention of some cancers. This is because as the person jogs, there is better oxygenation of the entire body. Cells that do not get adequate supplies of oxygen have been known to mutate more vigorously leading to the onset of cancer. Jogging increases the supply of oxygen to all parts of the body, helping prevent this mutation therefore protecting your body from the start of cancer development. Jogging Helps you Lose Weight and Reduces Body Fat Levels If you have been battling with losing weight then your probably should embark on a jogging regime. This form of exercise has been proven to have not
equal when it comes to weight regulation. It is estimated that you will burn roughly around 150 calories for every 1.6Km that run. If you do this religiously then the total amount of calories you would burn in the long run would be significant. There is also what is called the after burn effect which is the continual burning of calories for the next 48 hours after your last run. That’s what makes jogging one of the most efficient weight regulating exercises out there. Combat Stress with Jogging Jogging is very helpful when it comes to countering stress. Mr Mulindwa says that, it helps bring you to a more peaceful state of mind and promotes an upbeat attitude. He adds that the major treatments for stress he uses for his patients always involve exercise.
“I do not believe in popping a pill to deal with stress.” He adds. He believes that simply lifestyle change that incorporates exercise can have better results than any medication. Jogging has been proven to give an immediate tension release by leading to the release of brain chemicals that have a soothing and calming effect on our mental state. These chemicals are norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. Jogging also enables us to look inwards and focus our thoughts on more peaceful feelings as we run instead of the stress factors that have been plaguing us. Exercise has also been shown to affect at the cellular level by reversing some of the adverse effects of stress that are aging related.

HENRY
UGANDAN SONG-WRITER, SINGER AND PERFORMER GOING PLACES
Nince Henry AKA Sekyanzi Ninsima Henry started song writing in O-Level and has since never looked back. He has written hit songs for big artistes in Uganda and earned alot of respect in the process. He started his song writting career by penning hiphop rhymes but his major hit song was OMUKWANO GUNYUMA by Samali Matovu which did pretty well on the airwaves. He has also started singing too and has songs doing well on the charts. Qn: Who is Nince Henry? Nince Henry is Uganda’s number one music writer, he was born Ninsima Henry and is known for having written some of Uganda’s biggest hits since he started his career in 2010. He later went to studio to start his singing career and made his breakthrough hit song his titled ‘Cinderella’ and currently has 2 albums titled ‘Mpola Mpola’ and ‘Sibba amenvu’. Qn: What inspires you to write? I am inspired by life. Not my life in particular but the general aspect of life. That of the ones around me, what you see on the news, what your hear of and so on. It doesn’t have to be my life per say. Qn: Who was the first person Chano8. October 2015
you wrote for? The song, which was your breakthrough?
What happens is when an artist comes to me we sit and discuss the things to consider like their vocal range, their personality and the topic. It must be something he/she can sing. Personality matters some people can’t sing what another does.
That will be my man Bebe Cool. We met through a mutual friend so with time we became friends and kept playing around with music ideas then we realized I can write music. Qn: How do you decide what songs to give what artists? That is an interesting question because most people don’t understand it. I don’t write songs and shelve them and wait for artists to come look through and pick, neither do I write a song and look for an artist to entice them into taking it. What happens is when an artist comes to me, we sit and discuss the things to consider like their vocal range, their personality and the topic. It must be something he/she can sing. It is a special case when the artist knows the topic they want to sing but in most cases, 90% of the time the artist just wants a song. Qn: Is it not just being lazy for an artist to want you to write a song when it’s the hardest part of the process? It is not lazy at all. It is actually being clever. Most of these artists can write songs but is about being versatile. It is a gift to know that someone else can write you a good or great song. Even icons like Micheal Jackson had a team that would write not one not even 2 people to make the melody. It is actually a strength, for an artist to go Chano8. October 2015

When you are an artist you are an artist, you can do anything that is why someone will decide to do a rendition of another song and it still is a hit, you can find 2 or 3 people can be able to do the same. Fit!!!! He works out in a gym
Ok. Now in Uganda you will find we have categories that require a person to be emotionally attached to the lyrics. Categories like Hip Hop and Ragga you will find those artists have to write it themselves. Secondly there is also that type of music here that doesn’t make money, I say this in the sense that we can write the music but the artist doesn’t make enough to be able to afford our services or mine even though I can write a great song. So that streamlines the people I work with. Qn: What genres do you find yourself drawn to writing? Well there is nothing I can’t write, Chano8. October 2015
I can write in a lot of languages unless you ask me for a Ragga song in patois. hehe. When I started out I did rhyming , I did Hiphop I know it’s hard to picture me doing that now hehe but that is how I started, then went into RnB but when I tried Luganda I found that more comfortable, so I stayed there but there is no genre I can't write. So far I have done most genres that go well with Ugandan listeners. Qn: Among your fellow writers whom have you come to respects and consider as a good writer? My brother Ray Kasenyanku, he is really good, by the time I came
into the industry he was already here. He has written more songs than me. If you remember a song called ‘Bonna Obasinga’ done by Iry Namubiru, he did it. A Pass is new on the scene but he is doing well in his genre. Of course Silver Kyagulanyi too is good. They are many. For example did you know Moze Radio is a good song writer? He even writes for others too. Song writing is like singing everyone can sing but not everyone can do it professionally. You either have it or you don’t.

The group was established in 2013 and has since stayed strong together as they aspire to be one of the few last surviving boy band groups. The trio who are all 23 years old have a history having been tight friends for a very long time sharing the same passions and dreams in music. Chano8 tracked them down for a one on one to discuss their music journey so far.
Who is B2C? B2C is a musical trio which stands for Born 2 Conquer. It consists of Mr Lee, Delivad Julio and Bobby lash. We are quite new in the industry so you could say we are the new kids on the block. We got together in 2013 just to make good music. There are very few boy bands in the Ugandan industry so we are doing something different. B2C has 3 members ,Mr Lee whose real names are Mugisha Richard, Delivad Julio( Kasagga Julius) while and Bobbylash (Ssali Peterson) coincidentally we are all the same age. Just 23 and no! the criteria wasn’t the age hehe
How did the group get started? We have a long history, You won’t believe it but we have been friends since forever. Our friendship and brotherhood started all the way back in school. We have gotten closer and one of our shared passions was always music. When it came to music and how we perceived it, our ideas were similar and also complimented each other. Our aspects put together made sense. We aligned our goals and it was an easy decision to get into music together. It was all exciting and we didn’t see anything that could stop us, that is how B2C was formed in 2013.
What genre of music does B2C do? We are flexible. It is easy to focus to only one way Chano8. October 2015
of doing music, but takes alot of hard work to master more than one way. It is challenging but also rewarding so we like to keep it interesting. We have done a number of genres such as RnB, Reggae, Ragga, Zouk and Dancehall. We try our best to always be versatile. That way we can reach various listeners with various tastes and preferances.
Which artists in the east African region inspire you? We are blessed to be surrounded by many talented people in Africa and East Africa per say. Locally, here we have artists like Goodlyfe who have stood the test of time and stuck together. In EastAfrica the boy group of Sauti Sol is inspiring and the music they make speaks for itself, PSquare and many others. We are inspired by great music and the artist that never gave up and stayed true to their music.
Tell us about your music so far? so far we have 3 major songs. 'Wansensera which has moved places and is doing so well in many parts of the country like Lira. We also have 'So Fly' and 'Ebyokunkyawa' which haven't had alot of airplay yet. We are working on alot more so it's too early to be picking favourites. we have doen all our music at Badi Music studio under producer Nessim, he is one of the best in the industry.
What have you achieved as a trio that you think you wouldn’t have achieved as solo artistes?

We have one main thing in common as B2C and that is our passion for music. In addition to that, we have our brotherhood and history. we all grew up together and have gone through a lot considering that we studied together. We started way back in church and were engaged in church dancing groups, church singing. We have come from far. we used to have an idea but now we are living that which was just an idea. we have great management under Andy Boss, he is working so hard to see that we get somewhere. We have managed to go to shows we never expected to go to. We recently performed at King Saha’s show at Freedom City. The best part is we are a team, we don't get to shoulder our obstacles individually.
Which people have helped you get where you are now? First off we give credit to Badi Music. We were performing at a certain club when Isa, the manager of Badi Music noticed our talent and invited us to come and record at Badi Music Studio. That is when we met Producer Nessim who really guided us and has been of help in our musical journey. we owe alot to Badi Music. Chano8. October 2015

what advantages are in a musical group compared to being a solo artiste? One head can’t be better that two or three. As a group, we get a lot of trust from people because being a group, a lot of trust is built compared to being one. As a solo artiste, you can only have a limited number of fans. If you are 3, each of you will have his own fans according to their musical style, conduct and impression you give. Each of us has his own fan Chano8. October 2015
base. So in the long run we have a lot of fans. we don't act on impulse and every move is carefully thought out as a group.
What challenges have you faced in your musical journey? At times we go onto stage and fans boo you off stage because they don’t know you or your music. This urges you to work harder to do better music so you can get a lot more exposure. Acceptance from producers, Djs, media and other personalities in the entertainment in-

dustry. Many people in the industry end up getting stuck in their comfort zone when it comes to music and do not give upcoming artistes the chance to showcase their talent. These people end up not even reviewing, playing or promoting our music because they think we aren’t better than the artistes who are already on the scene and spotlight. This has ended up slowing down our progress.
Any upcoming projects we should look out for? We have a lot of videos coming through. We are Chano8. October 2015
working on a lot of songs this month and around 3 music videos, so by the end of this year you should expect a lot from us. Our fans should be on the lookout for B2C content. We also have a lot of surprise collaborations coming through.
Any messages to our readers and your fans? The first and best offer you can do for us as our fans is to listen to our music. We also request for extra support from all of you out there.

KATONO KATONO Winnie Nwagi
J
ust recently, she was your girl next door, however fast rising RnB singer Winnie Nwagi is no longer your ordinary girl with songs like ‘Katono Katono’, ‘Embeera’ and ‘Gogo’(Ft Khalifa Aganaga) doing well on the airwaves, the once unkown innocent Coca Cola Rated Next contestant is climbing the musical ladder. Her music journey, just like in the case with most stars, has not been easy. She started singing and dancing at an early age but only took things seriously when her friends convinced her to try her luck in the Coca Cola Rated Next music and talent search competition a Television program on a local station. Although she did not win the competition, she still emerged victorious after her third place finish with her mellow voice winning many admirers among them Swangz Avenue (Record Label) scouts who immediately signed her and the evolution kicked off. As they say, the rest is history. So after the success of ‘Embera’, her fans eagerly awaited for her next project under Swangz Avenue and behold, she unleashed ‘Katono katono’ which immediately got the fans talking and grooving as they sang her praises. It was not until the video surfaced that the public joined in the chorus of showering praises upon the hippy star. 'Katono katono' loosely translated as Small Small, is a love song that flows in a Zouk, afro-soul rhythm which preaches patience and trust. It embelishes the core values of the foundations that build a strong relationship where she chooses quality over quantity. She sings in her native Luganda, but the director Meddie Menz (Mirage Concepts) colours an illusion of peace with the costume and make up brightness embosomed in the backdrop material to match her melting voice. The story line is scripted in straight forward routine and oscillates around a special date with ‘a special person’ that is interrupted by a simple graceful dance move here and there from Nwagi herself.

Band Review
DAVIS NTARE Bubbles O’Leary’s
Davis Ntare has now coined a niche as a band performer
Davis Hillary Ntare’s story is one of perseverance and determination as he was sent back home during Tusker Project Fame season 3 (An all East African Talent Show). He auditioned for the second time at the beginning of the next season (TPF4) in Uganda and Kenya which he bagged in 2010.
H
e finally made it into the Academy and was so overwhelmed with emotion during this year’s opening gala night that he took to his knees in gratitude. That determination paid off when he was crowned the winner of Tusker Project Fame season 4 on Sunday December 5, 2010. From then on, he has never looked back in his musical journey. His voice is countertenor with strong falsettos and tremolos though he sometimes sings in male Soprano and Contralto. He is famous for constant ad-libbing and powerful performances. His musical style is a fusion of Neo Soul, Jazz, Reggae and Afro fusion. His latest sensation is a multi-fusion of Zouk. He has gone the extra mile Chano8. October 2015
to put together a band called Davis Natre and the band that has achieved tremendous recognition and success. The band currently performs on two Wednesdays each month at Bubbles O’Leary’s Irish Pub in Kololo. They have graced performances at several events and hangouts like Galileo Lounge in Kenya, Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Jazz Ville, City Ville, Club Venom Beach Bar, Ngong Race Course and also weddings, parties and other corporate events. Most of the band’s music is original compositions by Davis and a few covers here and there which really adds a spice to the band’s performance. The band normally combines three or four styles in songs which often make them very acoustic and musi-
cally rich. Davis’ own composition while in the Tusker Project Fame academy, 'Sheka Sheka' was widely received and is still popular among music lovers. The band comprises of Davis Hillary Ntare the lead singer and an acoustic guitarist, Joe Koda a guitarist, Lawrence a bass guitarist, Enock on the keyboard, Happy a saxophonist, Shabba and Ronnie are the drummers while Promise, Marion and Gloria are the vocalists. The band is signed to Rogue Elephant Creative and is preparing to launch their 20 track album on Easter next year.

Y
asigi is a unique place which brews its own beer and serves a variety of beers directly to the clients depending on choice or taste of the variety of flavours available on offer. It is located in the plush lower Kololo a Kampala upscale suburb. The beer garden which is located on Plot 40 A&B Windsor Crescent Road, Kololo in Kampala boasts a cool spacious compound and lounge where patrons come to relax in the ambiance to kill stress and talk. And for those who love a combination of beer, delicious food and cool music from several genres, there is always something special coming around like the Oktoberfest Beer festival that has been running throughout last month with a variety of beer flavours including Malt, Blonde, Amber Pilsner, Stout and many more. Something unique about the place is the fact that
revellers have a chance to sip a variety of beers from towers and unique glasses and also do self service directly from the brewery. Each tower of beer goes for 40,000/= while the specially brewed Yasigi special IPA goes for 45,000/=. A tower consists of 3 litres of beer and the brewery is usually shifted to the beer garden itself during festivals and special occasions. The hangout boasts of a highly diverse clientele ranging from Ugandans, tourists from all over the world, expatriates and other visitors who love and understand the quality contained in Yasigi’s freshly brewed beer with no preservatives. A special recipe is usually developed to come up with a special beer for the festive seasons. Although many locals have confessed to appreciating the beer, they still say the music is sometimes too foreign for their liking. With another challenge being a limited parking space that forces patrons to park on the streets.
