Chano8 BAYIMBA FESTIVAL

T

he Bayimba International Festival of the Arts is annually held in Kampala during the 3rd week of September.

The festival was developed to benchmark the consumption of Uganda’s finest arts, presenting Ugandans and visitors with a series of unparalleled feasts of music, dance, theatre, film, and visual arts from renowned and upcoming local and international artists.

BAY FESTIVAL

The recently concluded Bayimba festival was fun filled with several performances from Haruna Mubiru, Burney Mc, Ruyonga, Maddox Sematimba, Nehoreka of Zimbabwe, Matia Kakumirizi of Masaka, Dr. Bone of South Africa, Sifa Kelele of Kampala, Uganda and Santuri Safari among others. There were other activities like silent disco, yoga classes for beginners, fashion dome and an animation workshop. Bayimba showcased the finest arts in the country with several people bewildered at how amazing the art was. ‘Trash on Fashion’ by Afrika Arts Kollective which partnered with Modo Fashion House from Gulu had models dressed in different forms of trash, like take away packets, plastic bottles and polythene bags. With amazing performances on the main stage, upper stage and silent disco, people were left with tough choices to make, with many wishing they could clone themselves so as to be in all the places at the same time. That said, Bayimba Festival was definitely history in the making as it surpassed people’s expectations. We look forward to the next festival.

“Blankets and wine which is an East African picnic music style festival designed to showcase outstanding musicians took place at the Uganda Museum in Kitante.”

B

lankets and wine which started a few years back is in its seventh season and the concept revolves around a fun filled outdoor picnic setting where revellers turn up to enjoy good wine, socialize, eat and enjoy some form of entertainment usually live Band performances. This particular festival turned out to be a star studded event with celebrities like Capital FM’s Gaetano Kaggwa, Flavia Tumusiime, Singer Allan Toniks, Guitarist Mycko Ouma, Comedian Salvado and socialite Judith Heard among others turning up. They turned up in big numbers carrying picnic baskets, fashionable mats and of course some wine. Donning colorful light clothes, larger-than-life shades

with loud make-up. With the sun at its peak, most revellers sat under the comfort of their umbrellas. When Saxophonist Brian Mugenyi stepped on stage it seemed like the heat was all but forgotten, as fans got up into a groovy mood, others could be seen nodding their heads in slow motion rhythms and waving their hands while braving the evening sunset heat. If that wasn’t enough, Ruyonga took it to a whole new level when he stepped on stage, the energy shot through the roof, and fans ululated and kept cheering till he took a break but no sooner had he stpped off stage than fans screamed for a repeat of ‘Muhiilire’ and he obliged with a series of hiphop hits that kept guests on their feet.

S

outh African Band Mafikizolo were in Kampala for two shows recently. Although they were a no show at Namboole Stadium at the Club Mega Fest, they compensated the next day at the Kampala Serena Hotel with a VIP concert where they thrilled fans to the maximum. The South African group which originally consisted of three members; Theo Kgosinkwe, Nhlanhla Nciza and Tebogo Madingoane (who died in a road rage shooting in 2004) gained major popularity in Uganda with their ‘Khona’ hit song. They left fans ecstatic and wanting more at the MTN organised show. Before they could start, they had to set the record straight for not performing at the Club Mega Fest the previous day. “To all our fans who came out to see us at Namboole Stadium, unfortunately we couldn’t perform due to a situation beyond our control.” “Our excitement to perform turned into a disappointment after waiting for four hours backstage to rock our fans with our hits.” Silk Events was in charge of the production from the stage all the way to the artistes. Capital FM’s Gaetano Kaggwa was the MC and he kept his humour smart and sleek. The full house got value for their money with Mafikizolo known for their shuffle hit song Songs like Udakwa Njalo, Ndihambwe Nawe and Emlanjani. The show was definitely captivating with an energetic performance which got every fan to their feet and waving their hands like there was no tomorrow. If that wasn’t enough, the man playing the trumpet took it to a whole new level when he did ‘Pata Pata’ solo drawing wild cheers from the fans. The dancers were a sight to behold with their breath taking movements.

JOE THRILLS FANS AT THE JAZZ SAFARI

"The Jazz festival at the Kampala Serena Hotel lived up to the hype with great performances from our own Micheal Kitanda, Tizer Band, Norman Brown and Joe which left Jazz enthusiasts ecstatic".

M

icheal Kitanda and Charmant

opened up the performances to set up the tempo and mood in the crowd with several fans applauding them. Followed by award winning Tizer Band, the most amazing bit about their performance was Steve who not only sang, but played the Saxophone, percussions and guitar. With his prowess, some fans couldn’t help it, but give a standing ovation. Norman Brown dressed in a white cotton shirt and white jeans showed us why he has been nominated for several awards. With his wet look and open shirt, he reminded us of the days of Kool And The Gang. Two words best describe his performance, ‘Simply Amazing.’

41

Chano8. October. 2014

With plenty of drinks and food to go around in the V.I.P section, revellers were treated to comedy, from MC of the night, Rucci who was trying to ‘crack ribs’ with his Nigerian jokes although he over did himself and was booed off.

Joe Thomas dances to his fine tunes

Finally, the man of the night elegantly graced the stage. Joe Thomas, who was dressed in a tuxedo and looking a little bit older than most can remember, set up a frenzy amongst the ladies who went crazy by just a mere sight of the crooner. Performing his hit songs like ‘I Wanna Know’, ‘Love Scene’ and ‘Stutter’, Joe made almost every male curse, as their ladies couldn’t control their excitement with some screaming, ‘Marry me already.’ That said, Joe’s performance was flawless and lived up to the hype. The show ended at 12:30am with many fans ecstatic and yearning for more. They surely got their money’s worth.

Girls couldn't believe he still looks good.

Chano8 ONE MAN ONE MILLION

Chameleone Launches One Man, One Million Concert Jose Chameleone had a press release for the ‘One Million One Man show’ at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The event which kick-started at 8pm, attracted several media outlets and local celebrities like socialite Judith Heard, Meddie Sentongo, NTV’s Douglas Lwanga and Miles Rwamiti among others.

T

he guests were treated to the soulful ballads of the Janzi Band, free drinks and snacks were flowing in abundance as excited media crew and fans enjoyed themselves and mingled freely. While talking to the press, Jose Chameleone revealed the real reason for the One Man One Million concert as being philanthropic and he intends to use the funds to help develop Karamoja. ‘The government of Uganda is always asking us to be patriotic to our nation. This is my way of being patriotic to my nation. I am proudly Ugandan and I believe that I can use my status to develop Uganda. I refute the saying that “We won’t wait for Karamoja to develop.” ‘As an artist, I am a tool of development. I want to invest my tool and contribute towards change in Karamoja. One borehole goes for about 1,200,000 Uganda Shillings. If we can be patriotic and attend the 1 Man│1 Show│1 Million concert, we can possibly raise money for 100 boreholes that would be a big development in Karamoja.’ ‘Also, Karamoja doesn’t have pit latrines and digging a pit latrine costs about 400,000 Uganda Shillings. Constructing 50 pit latrines in Karamoja makes a big difference. ’‘The show is going to be something different from the usual because we are going to give value for the one million. We expect about 200 people to attend.’

Q& A

Have "Tokens Of Appreci In The Music Ind Miles Rwamiti is presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’. He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.

T

he scratch my back and I’ll scratch your s syndrome dates back to ancient times. In Uganda it is the norm. If you do not pay some DJs, they will not play your music. This is especially true if you are an artist releasing what I call “bubble gum” music. At times even DJs that are not interested in receiving money for playing music get overwhelmed with the artistes’ gratitude because it is assumed that you have to pay whenever you take new music to a radio or TV station. This trend started with the big artists who could afford to pay the various DJs to play their music. These days even upcoming artists make it a point to pay for their music to be played. Unfortunately for most that have no “investors”, it’s hard to make this payment and their music never gets played. For most DJs, it has become normal to be paid for airplay.

Ask Rwamiti 50

Chano8. October. 2014

We are living in a time when several radio stations charge to play songs which is funny because in other parts of the world, artistes are paid for their content to air on radio and TV. We have also seen DJs being bought out so that they don’t play a particular song. I have also heard rumours of sexual favours for airplay and I hope they are just that….rumours

Chano8 CORRUPTION IN MUSIC

Corruption In The Music Industry: 100 Kenzos Needed To Fight Vice

“The year 2014 has arguably been Eddie Kenzo’s year in more ways than one. His hit song, Sitya Loss, has seen him traverse the world. Through this exposure Kenzo got the nerve to address a malaise that has pegged Uganda’s fledgling music behind. – The habit of individuals in media houses extorting from upcoming musicians. ”

A

fter releasing a heartrending 19-minute video clip decrying corruption among Uganda’s music perpetrated by journalists and DJs, he followed it with a calculated flurry of punches that floored a journalist Isaac Mukasa (Kasuku).

Kasuku had accused Kenzo for paying him three years ago not to play singer Big Eye. The resultant furore caused a lot of debate but Kenzo had made his point.

is Sh500, 000, something that has stifled the upcoming artistes who can barely raise enough fees for studio.

“You hear stories of journalists telling you to part with a lump sum of sh500, 000 to illegally pay one radio or TV station to broadcast your song. This is unfair and it has taken our industry behind. With this pattern one can never make it if they don’t have money,” He complains.

Are the bribery claims true?

According to Kenzo, soliciting for money is institutionalized at some media outlets and the air play one gets depends on how much one pays through underhand methods.

In Kenzo’s estimation, the bribery claims are very valid and he comes short of mentioning the perpetrators. According to the video clip, Kenzo claims that the asking price in most media houses

“Why pay radio to play our songs like it is a form of levied tax from Uganda Revenue Authority? What happened to people giving out of courtesy… why do the media mistreat us yet they struggle to

CORRUPTION IN MUSIC Chano8

Isaac Mukasa 'Kasuku' was beaten up by Kenzo

play foreign songs whose singers they have no clue about? ” he fumes. As it is, he has resigned to fate and never rates most radio music countdowns. He argues that the higher one’s song rises on the music charts has a lot to with the frequency with which their managers pay the crooks perpetrating this game. Bakri, the melodious singer who recently broke away from Jeff Kiwa’s Team No Sleep management to start his own music management attests to the hustle it involves when one is selfmanaging. The singer who recently released a new song, 'Nkwata' admits to having problems marketing it to radio and TV owing to the many people who ask for money before airplay. While under Jeff’s tutelage, all he cared for was to hit the studio but he is learning his lessons and is determined to soldier through. Another singer Moses Okori (Coco Finger) who has self-managed after falling out with Emma Carlos downplays the bribery allegation. He vouches for one to build a meaningful relationship with media personalities and learn to have conversations that aren’t necessarily about money exchanging hands. That way, he says that any money that is exchanged is a token.

53

Chano8. October. 2014

Big Eye was at the center of the storm

Blackmail and extortion among journalists is a daily occurrence. Where you have individuals who rose from karaoke DJ’s to represent media houses, such uncouth practices are bound to happen.

Musicians abet the vice. A music promoter on condition of anonymity blames the big artistes, for sowing and maintaining the vice among journalists and DJs. “It is inevitable for some musicians. They have budgets for these people and I will tell you most journalists are on the payrolls of these musicians.” he explains. He says that the established artistes are aware of the power of airplay they never default on payments and have these individuals in media houses on speed dial. He says that some even spend up to sh5m a month on this venture and since most journalists earn peanuts, they (artistes) have found a soft landing. The habit became so much at one point with money openly exchanging hands, some media houses instituted official levies for artistes appearing on popular music shows. NTV for instance started charging musicians for appearances on The Beat, Expozed and Koona ne NTV, and even though the move instituted in July received animosity, musi-

cians are paying up to sh500,000 –inclusive of VAT for guest appearances.

Brown envelope journalism is wrong. Like it is at the top, the corruption at this level is hard to weed out. The Brown envelope culture where people pay for journalists to say flattering things about them is entrenched in a fraternity that has been infiltrated by unqualified individuals. According to Grace Natabaalo of Africa Centre of Media Excellence (ACME) there is need for awareness and legislation. “Blackmail and extortion among journalists is a daily occurrence. Where you have individuals who rose from karaoke DJ’s to represent media houses, such uncouth practices are bound to happen. It can only take legislation for the vice to be checked but with most journalists getting poor pay this dream is a far cry,” She concludes. As it is, we need 100 Eddie Kenzo for this vice to be stamped out!

Chano8 LEGEND ELLY MAMALA

Elly Wamala: Uganda’s Voice Of A lifetime

“You just don’t wake up in a rush and write about

music luminary, Elly Wamala. Chances are that you will never tell even half the story of who he really was and what he did to shape Uganda’s music landscape.

U

ganda possessed one music icon and that was Elly Wamala. Whereas many musicians possess elements of genius, one person—Elly Wamala — so completely embodied the term Ever Green that was bestowed upon him as a nickname. For someone who had and still boasts long-time disciples, Elly Wamala’ s story can best be told by his unwavering legion of devotees. His timeless records remain a main staple of Uganda’s airwaves. Songs such as Viola, Ebinyumu, Sacramento, Boda Boda and Akaana aka kawalya are still firm favourites.

a lifetime” so much so that when he started singing, everyone else was playing second fiddle. She reckons he was one of the biggest influences on Ugandan music who erased music boundaries and created his own niche which still lingers on. “While trends and movements came and went over the years, he remained distinctly Elly Wamala. With his warm croon, he mesmerized crowds with a rich repertoire of songs which have since become his trademark,” She offers.

Hearing his fans tell his story, you are lulled to think that his nickname “Ever Green” should be abridged to “Forever Green”. Such is his legacy.

Renowned playwright Alex Mukulu believes that one of the reasons Wamala stood out was because he refused to be limited by genres, which allowed him to appeal to the broadest possible spectrum of fans. He was widely admired as a singer, pianist and a composer of music.

Dr. Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare an Associate Professor of Drama/Theatre at Performing Arts and Film Department, Makerere University describes Wamala as “the voice of

not just entertained but with new knowledge. “He preached marriage, friendship, honesty, among other virtuous aspects of life,” Mutale said.

Early Career. Wamala was one of the first Ugandans to release a commercially successful song in the 1950s. His break through song, Nabutono, not only registered commercial success but it also opened the doors for him into the King’s palace. Kabaka Edward Mutesa regularly summoned Wamala to his court to perform the song.

Batte explains in an interview that Wamala enjoyed a meteoric rise, he almost failed to settle. He became a resident guitarist at New Life Bar in Mengo in the late 50’s but later migrated to Kenya, where he became a resident guitarist at a commercial recording studio, HiFi before ascending to become the leader of a band named the Cha Chan band.

Early mentorship. He returned to Ugandan in 1961 with the skill of a multi-tasker. During day, he worked with national broadcaster UTV, (Now UBC TV) and in the evening, he took to music. He retired from TV in 1981.

Veteran Singer Elly Wamala

While trends and movements came and went over the years, he remained distinctly Elly Wamala. With his warm croon, he mesmerized crowds with a rich repertoire of songs which have since become his trademark,. His contemporaries at the time included Christopher Ssebadduka, Fred Masagazi and Dan Mugula. Their ascension though was steady but none compared to Elly Wamala’s. After Nabutono, Wamala’s next

release was Josephine and it also became a hit. He is particularly remembered for rising above the Kadongo Kamu (single guitar-based genre) and moved to a style that relied on a symphony of several instruments. Nabutono has since been remixed and released by Af-

In the mid 70’s he realized his calling was music and he spearheaded the forming of the Mascots Band with Philly Lutaaya, Kabuye Ssembogga and Alex Mukulu. Others were Kampala lawyer Andrew Kasirye and singers Tony Ssenkebejje, Peterson Tusuubira Mutebi and Frank Mbalire. The band collapsed due to instability during Amin’s reign. Wamala went solo but played a mentorship role right up to his death. The likes of Philly Lutaaya, Moses Matovu and gospel singer Fiona Mukasa (His blood daughter) were under his tutelage and even in his later years, Jose Chameleone, Ronald Mayinja, Ragga Dee consulted him. Moses Matovu of Afrigo Band says, “He always required people to rehearse a lot before playing and he hated recording songs too frequently because he cared more about the art of music than its commercial success,” Matovu recalls.

Can artistes live up to Wamala’s perfection? To celebrate his life, a number of artistes have redone his songs under a project themed Elly Wamala All Stars: A 10 Years’ Tribute, which was launched in August. Career and awards: Music experts say that Wamala had more than 60 songs to his name, including his debut composition, Nabutono (1959), Talanta (1960), Welcome Pope Paul (1969), Viola (1974), Akaana ka Kawalya (1974), Sacramento (1994), Ebinyumu Ebyaffe (1998) and Ani Yali Amanyi (1999). Four months before his death, Wamala was in studio recording yet another album, Nkutte Mpola. It was released posthumously on December 13, 2004, which would have been his 69th birthday Wamala received several awards; in 1992, he won the Uganda National

In 2003, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at Uganda’s inaugural Pearl of Africa Music (Pam) awards. In 1994, Wamala staged a show (40 years of Elly Wamala) at the Sheraton Kampala hotel to celebrate his 40 years in the music arena and it was a sell-out. In 1998, he, together with Jimmy Katumba (RIP), staged a show at the Kampala Serena hotel and if the crowds that paid handsomely were a litmus test for their popularity,

they scored highly. Wamala was the founding chairman of Musicians’ Club ’89, a club of Kampala’s elite musicians that put on entertainment for themselves at the National theatre (Jam Session) every Monday. He was the first ever artiste, and only one so far, to be honoured by Parliament of Uganda. Since 2006, the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) and National theatre has organised an annual Elly Wamala memorial lecture in his honour. Speakers like Fagil Mandy, Dr Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare, Sarah Birungi, Tonny Geoffrey Owana and

•Jose Chameleone - Nga Bwewakolanga, I think he brings it out with his guttural voice. His choice to fuse in some Swahili salvages the song. Although devoid of typical Wamala passion, it is one of the most requested in suburb pubs with music slot machines. It is a hit.

Listen to the song and you will learn that Evans is mellifluously talented. He is Elly Wamala personified. The beauty of his rendition is that he appeals to both the young and the old in equal measure. •Rema - Lowooza Ku Nze: Her voice is unmistakable but there are false vocals all over it. Even then,

•Pastor Bugembe - Ani Yali Amanyi: The singing pastor took his time and did a good job. He chose a song that perfectly fits his vocal range and background. His emotions are in sync with the lyrics, because he relates to each word he sings. Introducing Micheal ‘Fingaz’ Mugisha The Man Behind Bebe Cool's Hit 'Love You Every Day' “Michal Fingaz formrly of Sony Records came to the lime light after producing Bebe Cool's block buster hit song 'love You Everyday. Chano8 caught up with him to find out what he is upto and to discuss his musical journey that has taken him places”

Who is Micheal ‘Fingaz’?

to this day.

My name is Micheal Mugisha. A proud Munyoro, my late father originally named me Mugisa but later changed it to Mugisha in memory of his fallen army comrade. I was born in Uganda and had my early childhood here with my father; at age 9, I left for the UK to live with my Mother in London. I have since 2010 moved back home and are married and with a son.

Why music production; take us through your musical journey

So ‘Fingaz’, tell us about the name? He laughs There is no mystery to it per se; an old friend of mine, Brando back in London on realizing I played the piano well, started calling me ‘Fingaz’, the name just stuck and I took ownership of it. Back then, many producers with whom we associated used electronic equipment like MPCs to produce while I favored the piano. I used to compose music on a piano and then transfer the composition to digital software afterwards; I still work that way

72

Chano8. October. 2014

Music and I go way back. When I first moved to London, I frequented my mum’s church where music was central to the processions and I was drawn to it that way. My mum picked up on my interest and on my 12th birthday got me a mini keyboard. I experimented with the mini keyboard and that in a way was the beginning of a lifetime pursuit of good music. I recall one instance when the keyboardist at church did not show up and my mum volunteered me when the pastor asked if there was anyone that could play. I struggled to keep up with the tunes and played with one finger, obviously off key and even though the experience was a scary one, it conversely strengthened my resolve to be better. Thereafter, the pastor offered to pay for me to learn music professionally, so I attended classes, learnt how to play the piano, the chords and melody theory. I start-

I did however pursue other interests along the way; in college I studied Human psychology and planned to enlist in the army. I was always drawn to the order partly because of the admiration I had for my father. Once, in a poignant moment after my grandmother’s burial, my mother asked myself and my siblings what we wanted to do with our careers; I told her I wanted to become a professional in the music field. She prayed over my decision and wished me all the luck in the world. My mother’s support has been a constant in my life and I like to think that her backing propelled my career growth in ways unimaginable without it.

Shortly thereafter, a friend Abdu ‘Skillz’, a great producer and video director now in Nigeria invited me to join him and a collective of other performers to put together an album. The group which comprised of singers, rappers and producers put together ‘big brovaz watching you’ which we sold outside music stores. That sold 10,000+ copies, a huge feat considering that we sold the albums ourselves mostly by handing it out to people on the street. The album did well; Shalit Roar Global, a big management company in Europe took notice and shortly thereafter Sony Records. With Shalit and Sony Records we produced two albums and had a number of top ten hits in the UK, Europe and AU.

By the time I was 22 I had worked at Sony with some of the most distinguished executives in the business including Dave Massey, now President of Island Records and Mercury Records, a part of the Universal Music Group and Nick Raphael , President of Capitol Records in the UK. I had also worked with some notable acts including Liberty X, Emma Bunton (Spice gals) and Lemar. Two years after that, I moved to SonyBMG Australia where I worked with Jessica Mauboy, Shanon Noll, Natalie Birthingweight, Axle Whitehead, Seany B, and a couple of other prominent Artists. Two

STAR PROFILE Chano8 of the albums I produced in Australia sold double platinum. After three years at SonyBMG Australia, I moved my trade to Atlanta, USA. My time in the US was short lived and at a crossroads in my life I decided to move back to Uganda in 2010 with plans to pursue music here but mostly to build a life in my homeland.

What have you been up to since moving back home? When I first got back, I started a digital media company, Oxford Digital Media and was involved in its running for two years before I relinquished those roles. At the time, I was not too keen on pursuing music full time and only produced occasionally. Gradually I’ve been drawn back to my passion and have since 2013 been actively producing. Opening a studio is the first part of officially being back in the music business. Most recently I produced Bebe Cool’s new hit ‘Love you every day’ and Radio and Weasel’s hits ‘Street lights’ and ‘Bring me back to life’. In the past I worked with Naava Grey on ‘Nteredde’ and ‘Oliba Wani’ and Micheal Ross on ‘Take your clothes off.’ I also worked with Esther Nabasa, my wife on the jubilee song ‘Yoga Yoga’ and a number of other projects. Additionally I produce music for corporate campaigns for various companies including SMART, NILE, MTN, UTL and Shell.

Any favored genres, how do you maintain uniqueness of each project you do? I don’t specialize in any particular genre of music. Production for me entails taking the time to reflect on each project individually and create from “inside outwards”; I listen to myself and try to eliminate outside influences when I created.

What has been the most challenging project you have worked on thus far? I generally do not have difficulty because on taking on a project, I am dedicated to seeing it through to completion. I must say though that Bebe Cool was pretty easy to work with because he gave me leeway to explore my creativity and was quite

the professional in the studio. He approached me to produce for him something that would appeal internationally, “something different” he said and so I did. I think though that the lack of proper systems in the music industry bogs it down greatly. Non adherence to the copyright law for example continues to cut from the benefits of many ‘artists’ including the producers, songwriters, musicians and wholesomely a lot of the professionals in the creative arts. The absence of a functional system is a loss not only for the creative people but for the government as well in form of taxes.

Chano8. October. 2014

Any icons in the business? Locally, I respect Steve Jean of Fenon and Benon of Swangz Avenue for their professionalism. Internationally I’d have to say Hans Zimmer, Quincy Jones, Kanye West, for their creative genius. Quincy did an excellent job on the Michael Jackson’s album “Off the wall”. Aside from Music, what are your other hobbies?

What does it take for one to become a successful music producer?

Photography – I find that it is another artistic expression for me. When I can make the time I like to play golf and like most people spend time away from work with my family and friends.

Passion, dedication, working hard and working smart

What legacy would you like to leave?

Masters Music, your new studio. Tell us about that.

I want to contribute to restoring the pride of my country. Many years down the road, I’d like there to be a sound that is distinctly Ugandan, a great sound and one I would like to be a part of creating. I like to think that with opening Masters Music, marks the beginning of that journey. Above all I want to make my family proud, for my son when in his 20s to be able to say “my father did that.”

Gladly! Alex Muhangi, my business partner and I are in the final stages of setting up a state of the art audio solutions space in Naguru. When we open in a couple of weeks, Masters Music will be your go to studio for the highest quality music and audio productions.

and powerless, take charge of your life and decide to be happy. Just like the way you met this man you can find another. No need to settle in a relationship where you have to check his phone wonder where he is and what he is up to. That is not LOVE!

Dilema

His Take

T

he thing about a philanderer is that, that is his nature and its very hard for such a person not to chase multiple women. While it may be true that he can genuinely try to give up this behavior for sometime, this usually doesn’t last long unless they seek professional help. Anyway this aside what you have on your hands is a scenario that repeats it’s self-countless times in our society. It’s like women never learn. A man gets a woman and she relinquishes everything involved in running her life and she centers her life around that man. She drastically reduces her social circle, compromises her career to get home early and cook or give up her career all together. Some women even give up their dreams in the name or riding on the mans dream and helping him achieve it. At the end of the day when the relationship hits the fan, the woman is left confused, hurt and not knowing where to start. This is where you are now Ms. Confused and powerless. I would first off commend you on the fact that you have realised this relationship is not good for you. You need to get yourself together and start a new life. Do not think that this will be easy because it took years for you to get to where you are. It will take some getting used to live independently from your man. Do not feign weakness and vulnerability because honestly this is going to get you no where. Unless if you are contented with staying in an unhealthy relationship, that could leave you infected with God knows what, with a man that bashfully behaves like a randy teenage nincompoop. There are some answered questions though. Was your man taking care of you? Do you have a job? Can you take care of yourself for a few months after you have left him? If you cant then I’m sure you have family or close friends that can take you in for a few months as you get your feet back onto the ground. If you have a job then you certainly can get a place of your own and start a new life. Whatever you do, you must leave this relationship. This guy is not treasure, he is trash, so you better start throwing out.

Mark Kawalya Do not get sentimental about the good times the two of your shared. Everyone has good times, with their cat, with family and with friends. So do not act like it’s the end of the world. Understand that there’s so much in life to live for aside from deadbeat boyfriends. And when its all over and the dust has settled, you will ask yourself what you were thinking to hang in there for all that time. It’s imperative that women learn to think with their heads and not their hearts. Love is only for the strong and if you come into it blinded by his good looks and chiseled chest then you are more than likely to meet a grand dramatic fall that will you leave you dazed. Wake up and smell the coffee. Nobody is perfect, especially us men and if he seems to good to be true, then he probably is. While your getting into a relationship, learn to exercise a good level of independence. Make your own money and take care of some your own needs. Do not simply wait for the man to do it all for you while you sit back and act pretty. The chickens will surely come to roost trust me. You can be engaged in a functional relationship while still remaining a useful member of society. Hold down your job, keep in touch with your friends and have an idea about what you want for you future. A relationship is not engineered to take you away from life but rather to enhance the quality of that life. The sooner you understand this, the earlier you will start to live. Its time to fly.

Chano8 RISING STAR

Apass

Rising Star

“Apass broke into the Ugandan music scene with the song “YOU DONNO ME” which caused alot of talk around town because many people thought he was either Nigerian or Jamaican. He started music at an early age. While in school, he used to mime other artists’ music and his first song was recorded at Freeways studio in 2007 after which he took music more seriously and went on to rise into a professional recording artist. Chano8 caught up with the promising star.

Qn: Who is A Pass? A Pass is Bagonza Alexander. I am 25 years old and the second born of my seven siblings. I went to Kampala Kindergarten for my nursery school, Nakasero Primary School for my primary, Mary Land and St Lawrence, Cream land for my secondary school. I did CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) in my S.6 vacation, but down the road, I gave up I.T (Information Technology) because my passion was music.

Qn: When did Your Music Career Start? I started singing when I was P.6 but it was mostly Shaggy and Redson music. I started writing my songs in secondary school, but unfortunately every time I filled a book, it was stolen. The first song I ever released was called "love is a beautiful thing" and that was in my S.5. I thank my friend Eddy, who kept pushing and believing in me.

Qn: What inspired you to take the music path? To be honest, I have been listening to many local artists for a while, but none of them impressed me that much. I would say my real inspiration was Micheal Jackson. His lyrics had a lot of meaning, I would always listen to him and just get bewildered.

Qn: Which music studio are you working with? I did some work with Talent Africa in the past. I am cur-

rently with Buddy Music Production. They have produced most of my songs like Sin city, Sun away, Love infection, Lay low, Tuli kubigere and Tetubatya among others.

Qn: If you were to comment on the current Uganda music industry, what would you say? Well, I think musicians should help themselves more. If your fellow musician has a concert or a new song out do him a favor and share it on your social media accounts. If we work in such a way, am sure our music industry would develop faster.

Qn: When was your last collaboration? I last worked with Radio and Weasel. The song is called 'Bartender' and it will be coming out soon.

Qn: Africa wise, which musician would you like to work with? Wiz Kid because he’s really good and our styles would merge perfectly.

Qn: Do you have any vice? No, I don’t smoke or drink. You will always find me with a Fanta

Qn: What should your fans look out for? They should look out for a revamped A Pass. Am just not looking at the Ugandan Music Industry, I have my eyes set on the big picture and that’s going international.

When you walk into one of the Black Abba stores you are greeted by beautiful designer bags, shoes, office wear, evening gowns, dinner dresses, casual wear, accessories and men’s casual wear. Black Abba is a fashion store famously known for the most trendy original garments and accessories. The store has 3 branches and they all aim to dress today’s confident corporate woman. Black Abba has been run by a family of ambitious and stylish ladies, handed down from one generation to the other but never losing their exquisite taste in fashion. It was started in 2002 by Acayo Ruth on Charm towers which specialized in only ladies’ garments. She involved her daughter Black Abber to help out at the store.

The store was a huge success there was a lot of room for expansion mainly because of the giant brands she imported such as Ted Daker, Coast and Next. In 2007 she remodeled and named the store Black Abba giving it class and elegance. Ruth renamed the store after her daughter whom she believes was responsible for the store’s success. Abber made it her job to handle communication, purchases and importation from renown designers as Ruth handled the sales part of the business. Abber later on decided to go to the U.K to further her studies. Determined to keep the business run by family, Ruth and Abber decided to bring on Abber's younger sister Abwola Eve to pick up where her sister left off. Eve found no difficulty moving from I.T to fashion seeing as she was already mentored into it by family. She stepped into her big sister’s shoes effortlessly.

In 2010 Eve was madly in love with fashion and decided to try something else out of her comfort zone. She spearheaded the opening of a second store at Garden city shopping mall and went on to turn it from a women only store to a unisex store. She says “Having mastered the art of managing a female fashion business, a part of me encouraged me to try out my luck with the male consumers as well.” It was an instant success and as more people especially ladies decided to step up their wardrobes to dress straight out of Vogue magazine, Black Abba became the only store that could cater to the growing awareness of trends and top designers in the industry. In 2012 she took the bold step to open a third store at Oasis mall, but she was not afraid of failure. She had already identified her market and made a point to take

W

e finally caught u p w i t h one of Kampala’s finest fusion bands of this generation -Janzi Band. This is an all-male band made of 7 talented fun guys who share the same vision and passion for music. Janzi band was founded by James Ssewakiryange and Abraham Sekasi in 2002 after realizing it was time to change the level of Ugandan Music in comparison to the West. The need to change and develop music was the driving force when the two gentlemen decided it was time to start a band. They want to change the music scene at home and then later export that all over the globe. The band got its name from the Luganda word for the ‘cricket insect’, the name was a representation of their music not being tied down but rather ever changing, evolving and a blend of so many styles from all over the country.

Sharing Pizza with the boys was interesting, watching them talk with so much passion about their band. It was obvious they shared more than music, they shared brotherhood too. James is the ‘serious’ one. He started the group and this has given him a sort of father role and carries most of the responsibility for his colleagues.

humor and fun loving personality. His love for people and music must be the reason most people are on their feet when he holds the microphone as he is the lead vocalist and guitarist. He talks about their performances with a lot of excitement which is the same energy he takes to the stage.

He plays over 5 traditional instruments and over the years has learnt the art of fusing a number of instruments and sounds to get exactly what he is looking for. He is fascinating to listen to. Hewas born into a music loving family and still carries the torch, he played and toured with Qwela Band before forming Janzi Band. When he isn’t with the band he is teaching music, traveling or playing with his family band.

He toured all over the Globe with Watoto Children’s choir. He is also a farmer. Going by first impression it is hard to see him as a business man but he is full of surprises. Trevor wears thick rimmed glasses and is the man on the keyboard. He is the music director of the club, he also teaches music at national theatre. Both Gideon and Trevor previously worked with Watoto Choir and have played with artists such as Navio, Lilian and Maurice Kirya.

Trevor and Gideon are the youngest and funniest of the bunch. Gideon aka Giddy has an amazing sense of

They are comfortable with the band make up and insist they don’t need a lady specifically to attract more listeners. They currently perform at Zone 7 every Wednesday and Gatomatto every Friday and a lot of Afrofusion lovers crowd the places to enjoy the music.

Janzi band has a distinctive style of music which they describe as ‘rounded’. James says ‘it is a modern Afrofusion and contemporary kind of music’ they mix western instruments with our traditional ones to make Ugandan music. They did their first album ‘Ekka’ in 2010 but they have decided to redo the entire album. “When we play for our audience the old album and compare it to the few songs we have redone, they notice

the distinct difference. They say the new stuff is mature. That is what we want.” James explains. So far they have done 5 songs and will be finishing up the rest by end of year. They are also planning to shoot a video soon for their song ‘Ngaali’. Catch Janzi band every Wednesday at Zone7 and Gatomatto on Friday. This is a band surely on the way to revolutionize Ugandan music.

MULAMWA Allan Toniks

T

oday we take a sneak peek into what Taniks has for us. First of all Toniks earlier told us in an exclusive interview that, his music genre is ‘foot music with influences of RnB’. So when he released this song, first thing when I listened to the song was, to try and make sense of ‘foot music with RnB influences’. Yes there is RnB flow in it though I am yet to understand the ‘foot music’ bit of it as he keeps reminding us ‘it’s a dancehall style yee eh ’ in the outro. The concept in the song is inspired by a simple party time mood. It talks about what men feel or do when in party mood. The song is pretty much a 'feel good' song dedicated to girls who would wish to listen to the ‘sweet nothings’ whispered by a man while having a good time. “I wrote the song mulamwa myself. The song was inspired by experiences from the Ugandan party scene; both my own and those of other individuals”. Toniks told Chano8 “Pretty much picking a guy’s mind on a typical night out in UG, obviously the song is from a guy’s perspective”. He added In the music video, he tries as much as possible to create the ‘feel good’ atmosphere too but probably due to limited resources, the scenes are shot in only about two spots in the same venue. By the roadside as opposed to the ‘night out’ scene we expect. The song produced by David King, will surely be embraced by many when the video plays on local TV. We like some angles and color in some scenes while other angles still seem to miss something.

acke Chandiru of the ‘Gold Digger’ fame is in the studio cooking up something serious. Jackie who formerly was with the girl group Blu 3*, came to fame with her hit song ‘Agassi’. She followed it up with a series of collabos with big name artists that the fans appreciated but recently took a low profile after a series of stories concerning her personal problems dominated the tabloids. The girl from West Nile is this time

working with former obsessions member Sharon O who also went solo after the group disintegrated. The former Big Brother representative looked in good spirits as they worked the vocals. Jackie too was exuding confidence she had just brought from the Coke studio where she featured alongside Shaa from Tanzania. The new song titled Lu’ba Lu’ba (luo for follow me, Follow me) is

a dancehall tune with old school feel added to it by the crafty hands of Producer PaddyMan at his Makindye based Audio One studios. The song is in a mixture of English, Luo, Luganda and Lugbara ti. Paddy man is well known for producing Chameleone’s block buster hit songs like Valu Valu, Badilisha and Tubonge. From what Paddy and the girls had worked on so far, the song sounded great to chano8.

Just Kicking Bar Sports Bar And Restaurant

J

ust kicking is a sports bar no different from the many American styled sports bars with huge screens airing sports. It is undoubtedly Uganda's leading sports bar, and is located on Cooper Road in Kisementi right next door to 7, Cooper Road the restaurant (Kololo Hill side). It is an upscale Kampala hangout where the crowd is much more appealing and of a certain class that is located more like in a residential, high market, diplomatic place. Four giant screens grace the four corners of the bar sky beams with walls covered in sports memorabilia. The British theme is apparent

with a framed rugby shirt for Jeremy Guscott and soccer jerseys of Premier league teams. The place gets really busy on Friday nights and getting a drink from the bar is an adventure in itself. There are no waitresses or waiters to serve you so you have to go to the bar to get a drink (unless you are a lady who came with a man and he is gentlemanly enough to order for the two). So if you are ever in Kampala even if its for a short period of time, it is definitely worth to going to Just Kicking. You can have a cold beer, great food including finger foods to full size meals for a reasonable price. www.justkicking.co.ug
